xrfanghello, my newly installed kubuntu 16.04 cannot login. the symptom is, I entered CORRECT password on the sddm login screen it freezes the input (as if the password is wrong) forever. meanwhile, I use ctrl-alt-f1 to switch to a console, use same username password, logged in successful. any hint is greatly appreciated!08:57
hateballxrfang: and this is a fresh install you say? not an upgrade?08:59
=== heinkel_flying is now known as heinkel_111
xrfanghateball: yes, fresh install08:59
xrfangunfortunately upgrade install failed.08:59
hateballxrfang: hmmm, check the usual suspects then. make sure you own ~/.Xauthority09:01
hateballxrfang: read ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log09:01
hateballas well see if dmesg spits out anything interesting09:01
xrfangok, I am trying to setup a new user ...09:02
xrfanghateball, new user logged in successful. I think I need to clean up the home directory, thanks.09:03
hateballxrfang: well check the logfiles as I said09:04
hateballand xauthority09:04
xrfanghateball: nothing special in .xsession-errors, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log has lots of info, most looks like irrelevant.09:07
hateballxrfang: and your $user:$user owns ~/.Xauthority ?09:08
xrfangwhat's strange is that the old user's Xauthority belongs to my current NEW USER! the new user is created just a minute ago09:08
xrfangI can change the ownership back to the old user and try again?09:09
hateballyes09:09
hateballThis tends to happen if one runs GUI apps using sudo09:09
xrfanghateball: it does not work, same issue. what's strange is that when in the new user's session, konsole session, i entered the old user's directory and chown for all files back to the old user, and log off09:11
xrfangon log off , system notify me some file is not writeable.09:11
hateballxrfang: did you chown -R olduser:olduser /home/olduser ?09:13
xrfanghateball: yes09:14
xrfangit is strange, now the new user also cannot login09:15
hateballare they pointing to the same home dir?09:15
hateballdid you make a new install, keeping old home?09:15
xrfangno, unless something I don't know happened, e.g. they are in fact hard links??09:15
xrfangyes I kept the old /home partition09:15
hateballthat should be fine, if you used the same username09:16
xrfangIt is very strange, I have 2 user name now, one is the old: xrfang, i just created a new one like09:17
xrfang(name if the user is "like")09:17
xrfangI am under /home, now ALL subfolders belongs to like:like09:17
hateballThat's... not good09:17
hateballxrfang: cat /etc/passwd and see what the entry is for "like"09:18
hateballand your xrfang user09:18
xrfangok09:18
hateballideally they dont have the same uid, and the home folder path isnt messed up09:19
xrfangthey are 2 different entries:09:19
xrfangxrfang:x:1000:1000:xrfang,,,:/home/xrfang:/bin/bash09:19
xrfanglike:x:1001:1001::/home/like:/bin/bash09:19
hateballhmmm, that looks in order09:19
hateballxrfang: you have to run chown with sudo, in case that was not clear09:20
xrfangI did, but something is not consistent09:20
xrfangwhen I try to explain to you and re-run the command, i got different result09:20
xrfanglet me try again09:20
hateballxrfang: who owns the /home folder? This should be root09:21
hateballand only each user own their individual folders09:21
xrfanghateball: I just changed that back to root... don't know why it became like:like09:22
xrfangwho should own the folder lost+found? what's that for...?09:23
hateballxrfang: that's for fsck, it should be owned by root09:25
xrfangalthough now the file owners looks ok, but the old user still cannot login, while the new one can...09:25
hateballxrfang: right, but after you try logging in and it fails, jump to tty and check ~/.xsession-errors09:26
xrfanghateball: now in tty and that .xsession-errors file is 0-byte09:27
xrfangon the sddm login screen, pssword input is frozen, the (movable) mouse cursor looks like a bold "X"09:28
hateballSomething is broken, that much is certain09:31
hateballI wonder, what do permissions look like for other folders on your system?09:31
xrfang... ok09:31
xrfangwhat "other" do you mean?09:31
hateballJust so that this "like" user hasnt taken ownership of say /etc and so on09:31
xrfangunder /, all sub folders belong to root09:32
hateballhmmm hmmm09:33
xrfangand btw, the installation is very un-smooth, took me about 2-3 hours, because I tried multiple times all except the last 2 installation reported failed to install grub, hence system is not bootable... I have to try again from scratch.09:33
hateballxrfang: is the disk OK?09:33
hateballand the filesystem09:33
xrfangthe disk is ok by checking sha256 on the official site.09:33
hateballI am talking about your SSD/HDD09:34
xrfangfilesystem...  don't know. how to check that? fsck?09:34
hateballYes, liveboot and run fsck against your various partitions09:34
xrfangthe target system uses SSD, which is not too old09:34
xrfangok, I can try that right now09:34
hateballxrfang: is it a samsung ssd?09:34
hateballhmmm, well I gotta go get some lunch but I will be back in a bit, in case you dont solve this on your own09:35
xrfangaccording to my knowledge, our IT man only trust INTEL ssd :)09:35
xrfangOK, I am also leaving in about 10-15min.   I will come back tomorrow see if we can still meet here. thanks a lot for your help!09:36

Smurphyjust ask, don't ask if we can help.09:47
giomatokay then, i'm having trouble setting up some simple scripts on startup09:48
giomatspecifically i'm trying to start at login a script that disable the panel shadows09:49
giomatif i run it manually everything is ok, but adding it to autostart script doesn't do anything09:49
giomatgoogling the problem i found other people having the same issue, but couldn't provide solutions09:50
giomati already checked if the script is executable09:50
giomatdo you know if it's a known bug? I'm running kubuntu 16.04 with backports09:51
giomatother startup applications (such as yakuake) runs fine, only the scripts seem to fail09:51
BluesKaj'Morning folks09:57
hateballgiomat: are the scripts chmod +x ?10:07
giomatyes, just rechecked10:10
Smurphyand are the script execute before or after startup ?10:18
Smurphy(startup of plasma)10:18
giomaton startup10:31
giomat(after)10:31
hateballgiomat: try putting a pause in the script?10:35
hateballin case the services it tries to manipulate has not yet started when it runs10:36
giomatuuu i never thought about it, should i put it at the start or ath the end of it?10:38
giomatit should work, the script uses a xorg function (xwminfo) and perhaps xorg has not yet been started when the script runs10:40
hateballgiomat: I've no idea what your script does, but the idea would be to put "sleep 10 && stuff"10:40
giomataa okay, so at the beginning10:40
giomatthanks hateball, i'm trying it right now10:41
giomatit works!!!10:49
hateballgiomat: :)10:49
giomatmany thanks10:49
hateballcould probably be done nicer if you knew what it depends on to run successfully and wait for that to initialize10:49

hateballjubo2: did you move from kwallet4 to kwallet5 ?11:58
jubo2hateball: not sure.. I ... I.. I think I did a stupid move.. I extracted the .dotdirs over the existing ones before running 'sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade'11:59
jubo2now upgrading 600+ packages11:59
jubo2So possibly need to start over with the clean install12:00

geniime7: I was thinking to recommend same version driver from a more updated PPA, but the author of that driver tells me there is no real difference between thatone and what you currently are using17:05

me7as this is just a recent problem , no text in boxes now the stability of firefox17:06

est31I have this too17:37

me7so last two release , i let the auto updated tell me when to update fire fox17:39
geniime7: You whould also install the package called: icedtea-plugin17:39
me7so when ever it poped up and said firefox update is when17:39
genii( to get Java)17:39
me7k whats command to get that17:39

me7if not new firefox last bet17:41
est31and then download https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/46.0.1/17:41
est31to try whether firefox 46 added it17:41
me7k got it17:42
geniiest31: Alternately, just add the mozilla daily ppa....17:42

me7should i set it to always activate?17:44
me7eiher way black boxes still17:46
me7lol now this is a mystery17:46
me7hopefully all this will help with stability though17:47
ScuniziI just installed 16.04 and did an fdisk -l ... There are 15 ram disks listed each 64MiB and mounted at /dev/ram(number of disk).. Is this normal?17:47

geniime7: If you want to live dangerously and see if the newest Firefox solves anything... sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa   and then... sudo apt update   then... sudo apt install firefox-trunk  after this, you would see: Firefox Nightly Web Browser as an application you can run17:57
me7saved your msg to a text file for later17:59
me7need pc to work for rest of day :)17:59
allesz_I would go with the developer edition. it is newer but not as new and unstable as nightly imho17:59
me7but seems like only final solution at this point i think we've checked everything18:00
allesz_you could also try out: chromium-browser, opera, vivaldi, google chrome, ... ;-) lucky we have some choices nowadays18:00
me7will give it a shot , want to see if these extras i've added helps with stability first18:00
me7yea i'm just kinda stubborn , used to firefox and all18:01
geniime7: Another explanation might be that the ads on the website take up more bandwidth than your internet connection can handle18:01
genii( or that the ad provider's servers are slow)18:01
me7now something broke it , not sue if system update or firefox , i ignored it thinking they'd catch it and fix it but , i gues not18:01
me7test it again hd porn , porn works18:02
me7ok i wish i was joking18:02
me7i get that adds are geting shoved down our throws like nobodies bussines , but i can't see how adds would take up more system resources than 3 hd streaming in seperate windows18:03
me7btw system spec are old as dirt 1.4 core 2 duo 2 gigs of ram18:03
me7but has worked last year and half sinse i turned it into a kubuntu lappy18:04
me7also i'm runnin git off of a ssd , so that helps18:04
me7or did18:04
me7i might just have to bite the bullet and turn my win7 laptop into a dual boot machine , but i like have two systems functional18:05
geniiI'm beginning to suspect the server from which the ads are originating from is probably just slow18:05
me7what i probally aught to do though is put some adds on some hard ware trading forums and see if somebody would donate a old ass 2 gig ram module at cost of shipping18:06
me7these rams are like 50 bucks if you can find em and they have to run pair on these motherboard18:07
me7like ddr the orignal lol18:07
me7this weekend i'll try out some different web browsers18:08
me7i can deal with the blank info boxes , but stability is driving me bonkers18:08
me7alright i'm off , genii and the others , thanks a ton for helping with the trouble shooting , wish i could report a fix was found , but that happens :) in the meant time i learned alot about stuff i'll keep on my to install list next time i install a linux distro18:13
