mpontilloccit-spence: it should be fine to do that; MAAS supports VMware for power management. if you will be creating virtual bridges on VMware hosts, (like to create containers, etc) just be aware that there can be issues with the way VMware virtual switches optimize traffic sent to VMs06:21

f1gjamhey guys, I have a very weird problem. I have two nodes which I can deploy to via MaaS and two nodes which i cant. The two nodes which work are the HP ML110 G6 servers and the two nodes I cannot deploy to are Lenovo TS14013:38
f1gjamthe error I get is: https://screencloud.net/v/C1lI13:38
blake_r_f1gjam: what version of MAAS are you using?15:50
f1gjamblake_r_, 1.915:55
f1gjami tried both ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 images15:55
blake_r_f1gjam: try recommissioning the machine first then deploying16:02
blake_r_f1gjam: only one disk should be installed to the other disks should have the superblock wiped that way it does not try to boot to it16:02
=== frankban is now known as frankban|afk
f1gjamhmm16:20
f1gjamif i remcommission16:20
f1gjamcan i format both disks?16:21
kikof1gjam, you can always format two disks, as long as MAAS knows about the disks16:50
f1gjamwell16:51
f1gjamim gona try again in a sec16:51
f1gjamso it just seems to sit here during deployment16:57
f1gjamhttps://screencloud.net/v/n1X616:57
roaksoaxf1gjam: did you look at /var/log/maas/rsyslog/<hostname> or did you look at the node event log to see whta's going on?16:58
f1gjamis always empty16:59
f1gjamon 1.916:59
roaksoaxah, yeah 2.0 is the one that adds rsyslog17:00
roaksoaxf1gjam: what about node event log ? the node event log will tell you what's going on17:00
f1gjamwhere is the node event log17:00
roaksoaxf1gjam: if you are using the CLI, you can see the "events" endpoing17:01
f1gjami was using the gui17:02
roaksoaxf1gjam: if you are using the UI, you can see it in the Machine details page (the one you are trying to deploy)17:02
f1gjamhttps://screencloud.net/v/tdX517:02
roaksoaxf1gjam: you are tring to access a metadata server for curtin17:02
roaksoaxf1gjam: you can access the UI: http://<ip>/MAAS17:03
roaksoaxf1gjam: click on the machine you are trying to deploy17:03
roaksoaxf1gjam: you will find the node event lo there17:03
f1gjamhttps://screencloud.net/v/mgeT17:03
f1gjamhttps://screencloud.net/v/wcO217:04
f1gjami can logon to the machine17:05
f1gjamthats being provisioned17:05
f1gjamis there anything i can get from there>17:05
f1gjamcheck this: http://paste.ubuntu.com/17980452/17:07
f1gjami got this from the provisioned node cloud-init-output.log17:07
f1gjamMaaS still thinks the node is deploying17:07
f1gjamstill no luck18:22
f1gjami installed ubuntu on the machine and tried that but i still cant get this to work18:22
kikof1gjam, does ubuntu installed on the machine work?18:24
f1gjamyes18:24
f1gjamit booted18:24
f1gjamthen i tried maas again18:25
f1gjamsame issue18:25
f1gjampxe to localboot fails18:25
kikof1gjam, I don't think it's clear what your problem is18:26
f1gjamhttps://screencloud.net/v/C1lI18:27
f1gjamthis is the problem i am facing18:27
kikof1gjam, is this after installation?18:30
kikowhich boot is that18:30
f1gjamthats after the initial OS deploy is done by MaaS18:33
f1gjamand it reboots the system18:33
f1gjamthis happens18:33
f1gjamif you want i can do a google hangout or something and you can see this live???18:34
f1gjambrb 5 mins18:34
f1gjamok back18:37
f1gjamkiko, are you about?18:50
kikof1gjam, I'm otp so very slow18:51
kikof1gjam, UEFI or legacy boot?18:52
f1gjami have enabled legacy boot19:13
f1gjamshould i change it uefi?19:13
f1gjamenabled UEFI19:30
f1gjaminitial install completed, machine rebooting19:30
f1gjammoment of truth19:30
f1gjamnope same problem19:31
f1gjamhelp19:32
f1gjamwoops19:32
f1gjam]ok so i think i figured it out19:34
f1gjami just did a boot slection and chose the correct disk my self and it booted, and MaaS said deployed19:34
f1gjamso its basically choosing the wrong disk to boot off19:35
kikoah19:38
kikovery interesting19:38
kikof1gjam, do all the machines you have present the same behaviour?19:38
f1gjamno only the Lenovo machines19:41
f1gjamdoing another deploy to confirm19:41
f1gjamif its true19:41
f1gjamits the silliest bios option ever19:41
kikowhat is the bios option?19:41
f1gjamthere is an option to choose USB key19:41
f1gjamvs USB HDD - Sandisk19:42
kikooh m19:42
f1gjamso i chose the USB - San disk19:42
f1gjamwell usb key didnt wor19:42
f1gjamnow let me try19:42
mupBug #1596683 opened: node network settings revert after failed bootstrap <MAAS:New> <https://launchpad.net/bugs/1596683>19:42
f1gjamim guessing the device name is incorrect19:44
f1gjamfor the pxe?19:44
f1gjamor someting19:44
kikof1gjam, I think I lost you in the last part of the chat19:54
f1gjambaically19:55
f1gjambasically19:55
f1gjami thought the boot option was screwed up19:55
f1gjambut its not that, I tried UEFI, but I selected UEFI first then legacy, now i have forced it to just boot in UEFI mode and I am trying again19:55
f1gjammy thought is that during the insall everything goes well, but when PXE is configured for the local disk boot it messes up which disk to boot off19:56
f1gjamUEFI MaaS boot happening now19:56
f1gjamIT WORKED!!!20:08
f1gjamno wait20:08
f1gjamlol20:08
f1gjamit was commssioning :)20:08
f1gjamok looks like it did work20:21
f1gjam:)20:21
f1gjamkiko, so Lenovo TS140 has to be in UEFI mode20:21
kikof1gjam, interesting. the x240 blades can't. :-)20:26
f1gjamwel the blades would be old bios right?20:33
f1gjamim testing the second server now20:33
f1gjambtw this is my home lab20:34
f1gjamso i can test most scenarios without anyy issues20:34
kikof1gjam, neat20:34
kikof1gjam, the very latest blade BIOS (which Lenovo provides) still fails with us on UEFI20:35
kikof1gjam, happy it works for you though 8)20:36
kikof1gjam, could you file a bug describing how legacy boot mode fails and the failure mode, perhaps attaching the screenshots?20:37
nturnerI have a raw disk image that I've prepared for creating amazon machine images (AMI). This works. Is it reasonable for me to think that I can take this raw disk image and turn it into a custom MAAS image? I've read the docs, and it's not clear.20:40
kikonturner, hah, that's a really good question.20:41
kikosmoser, blake_r_: do either of you know the answer to nturner's question?20:42
kikowe get so many custom images questions20:42
f1gjamkiko, will do but letme confirm first it is 100% working20:49

f1gjamkiko, https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/159671921:59
kikothanks f1gjam21:59
kikof1gjam, it has to do with how we tell the firmware to select drive 1 I think22:00
f1gjamnp22:00
f1gjamno once you do UEFI22:00
f1gjamyou have to recommisson22:00
f1gjamwhich is what I am trying now22:00
f1gjamto confirm22:00
f1gjammachine two works all the time now22:00
f1gjammachione one didnt work after the  changes22:00
f1gjambut ididnt recommission22:00
f1gjamso trying now22:00
f1gjamim doing all this and i know landscape will break !! :'(22:01
f1gjamconfirmed works now22:10
mupBug #1596719 opened: Lenovo TS140 Server UEFI only supported by MaaS <MAAS:New> <https://launchpad.net/bugs/1596719>22:15
pacavaca_When using custom image MAAS says it can't configure network, network config only supported for Ubuntu. Which is fair, but is there any way to let MAAS think my custom image is actually an ubuntu image? Because it actually is an ubuntu + few extra packages and configs.22:17
mupBug #1596719 changed: Lenovo TS140 Server UEFI only supported by MaaS <MAAS:New> <https://launchpad.net/bugs/1596719>22:18
mupBug #1596719 opened: Lenovo TS140 Server UEFI only supported by MaaS <MAAS:New> <https://launchpad.net/bugs/1596719>22:22
kikof1gjam, shouldn't break, I have a few users running landscape happilly22:31
kikopacavaca_, I do believe there is a way, look up curtinator to see if they do anything special?22:32
pacavaca_kiko: Curtinator doesn't do anything special, it just installs cloud-init. But curtinator-created images are recognized as custom by MAAS.22:33
f1gjamkiko,  it broke yesterday so we shall see, but at that point i didnt know about this issue :)22:39
roaksoaxpacavaca_: in 2.0+ we "pass" the curtin config that has the network configuration22:52
roaksoaxpacavaca_: so it would be up to you to understand that and translate that into the image22:52
roaksoaxpacavaca_: or you could always contribute to maas that code :)22:52
f1gjamkiko, looks like landscape may actually work :D23:00
f1gjamwoooot23:00
f1gjamwill today be the day i can install autopilot and openstack!!!23:01
f1gjamoh wait23:06
f1gjami think i just screwed my network design :(23:06
f1gjamso landscape worked :D23:06
f1gjamThere must be at least one machine, available in the MAAS cluster, that has two or more network interfaces connected to the networks that are defined in MAAS.23:13
