loganrunhggdh, the first red stuff I see is  systemd-tmpfiles[2126]: symlink(../proc/self/mounts, /etc/mtab) failed: Read-only file system00:17
loganrunsystemd-udevd[1012]: Process '/lib/udev/hdparm' failed with exit code 5. (this isn't red though)00:18

loganrunhggdh, any idea if that means anything00:21
JFlashhi, I'm back!00:23

loganrunnot sure if that is safe or not00:24
JFlashnow he says that I donly need a way to find out how to fix ipv4 domain resolution00:24
JFlashcan anyone help?00:24
loganrunif anybody is running ubuntu 16.04 can you tell me if the file /proc/self/mounts is a symlink or an actual file00:27
naccloganrun: it's a file, afaict, 'regular empty file' per stat00:28
loganrunok thanks for checking00:28

brenda_demetris, you may find that the only way to solve your problem is to find a special kernel for your laptop, if that does not work your last resource is to build your kernel.00:36
MisterMomhey all,  do LTS releases use the same repos as all the other releases ?00:37
lordcirthMisterMom, each release uses it's own set of repos, regardless of LTS00:38
naccMisterMom: what do you mean? each release has its own repo area00:38
brenda_demetris, there are some way around your problem. Tip: Search for different ways to reboot Linux.00:39

brenda_Hi! Is there any way one can get Firefox or Chromium to play Youtube videos as resource effective as mpv?00:43
bazhang!info mpv | brenda_00:43
ubottubrenda_: mpv (source: mpv): video player based on MPlayer/mplayer2. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.14.0-1build1 (xenial), package size 837 kB, installed size 2080 kB00:43
MisterMomnacc:  problem for me is if i install one of the clients for kde it wants to install about 50 more other packeges mostly kde stuff and im not sure i want to do that00:43
lordcirthbazhang, how does that help?00:44
bazhangperhaps you meant mp400:44
lordcirthbazhang, no, pretty sure he means what he said.  He asked this question earlier.00:44
naccMisterMom: well, as it should, if you're asking it to install a kde client. So you've mentioned one package so far, it's unmaintained (upstream & in debian) and now dead. Do you have others?00:44
MisterMomnacc:  im using xubuntu00:44
bazhanglordcirth, otherwise the question does not make much sense, thats what00:44
lordcirthbrenda_, are you opted in to the HTML5 trial?00:44
brenda_I want my browser to be as light on resources as mpv00:45
lordcirthbazhang, it makes perfect sense.  mpv plays youtube videos with low resource usage, while browsers use a ton to play the same video.00:45
bazhanglordcirth, mp4 is no longer a trial00:45
MisterMomnacc:  yes but there names escape me at the moment and im not on my computer00:45
brenda_lordcirth, I user html5 yes00:45
lordcirthbazhang, just checked, you are right.00:45
brenda_lordcirth, I use html5 yes00:45
naccMisterMom: it's hard for me to help you out; there are always case of packages going away between releases. Particularly (I would think) between LTS releases, where in 2 years, many OSS projects may die/change/rename/etc00:46
bazhangbrenda_, mpv is barely a gui, no browser will match that00:46
MisterMomnacc:  i guess i will keep looking around for somthing00:46
MisterMomnacc:  i know and i apreaciate any help at all00:47
brenda_bazhang, mpv is not a gui (as i understand it)00:47
bazhangbrenda_, mpv can in fact be used as a backend for smplayer and the like00:47
lordcirthbazhang, it's not just the extra stuff the browser happens to be doing.  browser youtube cpu is much greater than browser idle + mpv video cpu00:47
MisterMomnacc:  i will find somthing eventually00:47
naccMisterMom: for blogging, apt-cache shows me : blogilo, choqok, hotot00:47
brenda_baz, why cant a browser match mpv (kodi, vlc etc)?00:48
naccMisterMom: there are probably others, just my casual grepping00:48
bazhangbrenda_, which browser did you imagine could manage that00:48
MisterMomnacc:  hotot is more im and twitter and the other two are kde, i already looked at them00:48
naccMisterMom: there is also qtm?00:49
brenda_bazhang, any browser on Linux should. As the do on Windows.00:49

lordcirthbrenda_, GPU and driver?00:53
naccbazhang: well, even that, I wouldn't recommend; drivel is dead (afaict) upstream maintainer requested its deletion from debian around utopic00:53
bazhangnacc true, but he/she seems to love it00:54
brenda_lordcirth, I have an CPU load of 80-100% in the browser (Linux). 20% with mpv. And 20% with the same browser in Windows.00:55
thalladaI tried upgrading from 15.04 to 15.10 and then 16.04 but everything seemed broken. Is this possible or should I give up and start from scratch with 16.04?00:55
bazhangI'd have thought blogfire was still a thing as well, so I am out of the loop on the bloggin scene00:55

bazhangthallada, 'seemed broken', what does that entrail exactly00:55

gueriLLaPunKok so i excuted the cmd as guerillapunk and still the same fatal error when installing01:08
lordcirthgueriLLaPunK, reading the guide, I think you are supposed to set the steamcmd files to be owned by "steam" and then su to "steam" to manage it.  However, the library problem is separate01:08
tikunbrenda_, I've tried, with secureboot disabled it says no OS found01:10
lordcirthgueriLLaPunK, if you put all the related files into /home/steam, and chmod o+rw the directory, that might solve the libsteam.so problem, according to the ticket you linked01:10

HoodedGryphon__thx03:14

HoodedGryphon__brand new03:14
rflemingHoodedGryphon__, http://askubuntu.com/questions/696413/ubuntu-installer-cant-find-any-disk-on-dell-xps-13-935003:15
OerHeksuh oh, found that too...03:15
rflemingFrom that link: Main problem is that DELL shipped with Windows pre-installed in IDE mode.03:15
HoodedGryphon__Oh shit03:15
HoodedGryphon__Yeah so do I have to reinstall windows?03:16
OerHeksbackup data, change bios IDE > AHCI, reinstall windows, and try again03:16
OerHeksor is someone smart to know how to convert ?03:16
rflemingHoodedGryphon__, the second answer may be your answer.  Switch the disk mode.  You'll have to go back and forth in BIOS to change it but you can boot03:16
HoodedGryphon__Ok I'm kind of new to BIOS-level tricks03:17
rflemingotherwise, you have to restart from scratch03:17
HoodedGryphon__How hard/dangerous is this?03:17
dm_compin this guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing will the Bug #1049549  impact me if i select a usb?03:17
ubottubug 1049549 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "Ubiquity manual partitioning offers to install grub in a way that breaks Windows boot" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/104954903:17
rflemingHoodedGryphon__, Third answer is a 'fix': http://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/15006-attn-ssd-owners-enabling-ahci-mode-after-windows-10-installation-5.html03:17
rflemingUse at your own risk :)03:17
HoodedGryphon__How dangerous is all this?03:18
rflemingcould make your windows not boot03:18
HoodedGryphon__shit03:18
rflemingI'd do the 'start from scratch' route...03:18
rfleming... or use an external HDD03:18
OerHeksI have no confidence in that trick, but worth a try, you can always re-install after that03:19
HoodedGryphon__So I'd have to go to BIOS03:19
HoodedGryphon__then format the windows partition from there?03:19
OerHeksbios > hdd controller > IDE to AHCI03:19
rflemingUhh... Do you have recovery media?03:19
rflemingyou might want to start there03:19
HoodedGryphon__Yeah I do but tbh I'm not sure how to use it03:20
rfleminghttp://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN29792403:20
OerHeksthe XPS13 uses an M.2 NVMe SSD ??03:20
OerHeksnice03:20
rflemingYou would go into BIOS, and change the disk mode from IDE to AHCI... then boot off the recovery media and do a factory reset03:20
rflemingthat'll wipe everything out in Windows... so make sure you have backups :)03:21
HoodedGryphon__Well I just got the computer so I'm not losing much03:21
rflemingGood luck03:22
HoodedGryphon__Is the advice from tenforums there really so dangerous?03:22
HoodedGryphon__Reading through, it doesn't *sound* that bad03:22
rflemingHoodedGryphon__, well if it doesn't work, you'll most likely have to format and start from scratch03:23
HoodedGryphon__Well isn't that what I'm doing anyways?03:23
rflemingI guess.03:23
OerHeksinstalling win10 wil be 30 minutes, updating 24 hrs ..03:23
rflemingOerHeks, that's Win703:24
rflemingWin10 updates pretty quick.03:24
rflemingHoodedGryphon__, using recovery media is a piece of cake and is the easiest option.03:25

HoodedGryphon__Is there any way to verify my recovery media?03:28

HoodedGryphon__because my brand new laptop is on the line03:31

fox__rfleming okay so lm-sensors and fancontrol are both installed. how do i run it?03:39
jmppI have Ubuntu 16 running under VMWare Fusion, and it's been working really nice03:39
jmpphowever, a few days ago I installed a Wifi extender, and I think it coincides that since that day my VM hasn't been able to get an IPv403:40

rflemingjmpp, yes, but the ACKs are not there03:42

jmpprfleming: well, as the extender was rebooting I issued "ifup ens33" and the VM did get the IP that my router has reserved for it, so it's pretty clear that the extender is creating some kind of conflict03:49

hstlHi all. Is Lubuntu best choice for old computers among other Ubuntus?06:08
Bashing-omhstl: Yepper ; Lubuntu is a faster, more lightweight and energy saving variant of Ubuntu using LXDE, the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment. It is targeted at "normal" PC and laptop users running on low-spec hardware.06:09

diverdudeikonia, then it just writes "mount: Operation now in Progress"07:03
ikoniadiverdude: and it just hangs and never returns to a prompt ?07:04
Mrokiiikonia: Well, the only error message in xsession-errors (besides) the one I mentioned is that some command found in .bash_login couldn't be loaded. Nothing essential, I think it was a script somebody wrote which I included, but I think which I may have deleted. Could that be a problem?07:04
diverdudeikonia, it does return to prompt07:04
ikoniaMrokii: what command07:04
ikoniadiverdude: is you go into that directory, what's there07:04
diverdudeikonia, then its just empty07:04
Mrokiiikonia: Some script somebody wrote. It's called "today" and I think it loaded and displayed the current date or something like that.07:05
ikoniaMrokii: "a script" that "someone" wrote - you don't know what it does and you deleted it.....yeah, I think that may have somethin to do with it magically breaking07:05

ikoniaMrokii: what line ?07:05
YankDownUnderMrokii: Reboot? Or just logout and login again..??07:06
ikoniadiverdude: so my imediate guess is that it can't talk to the server, mount is normally so quick you don't see anything, but you're seeing "mount: Operation now in Progress" means something is slowing it down07:06
ikoniadiverdude: normally something like that is because it's waiting for a response from the server,07:07
ikoniabut normally - you'd get an error if there is no comms at all there07:07
diverdudeikonia, hmmm yeah you are right...i also cannot ping the server07:07

ikoniacouldn't find "what"07:08
ikoniaMrokii: you're not supplying info at all07:08
YankDownUnderMrokii: Get rid of the line or whatever that is looking for the ".bash_login"07:08
Mrokiiikonia: the line is like this (translated from German): "/home/my_user_name/.bash_login: Line 310: today: command not found."07:09
OerHeksdiverdude, is uname your valid username ??? username=uname07:09
diverdudeOerHeks, no i just masked the real username07:09
MrokiiThe next line (no error message) is "Xsession: X session started for stephan at ..." (Date is shown).07:10
OerHeksoke, just wondering07:10
Mrokiiikonia: And the last line in the xsession_error-file is the error message I mentioned at first, the one with the unsupported number of arguments.07:11
YankDownUnderMrokii: Is it not easy enough to just go and comment out/remove/delete all that has been done - instead of wasting the energy in trying to put a bandage on it?07:11
MrokiiYankDownUnder: Sure it is. I just wasn't sure what was causing the error when I asked. If that line in .bash_login could be a problem I will try that.07:12
OerHeksmeybe you are missing -t filesystemtype before cifs .. not sure about that07:13
YankDownUnderMrokii: Rename the ".bash_login" to something else - unless you're specifically running bash scrcipts on login...which I highly doubt...07:13

nickarHi. I've installed 16.04 LTS and the networking was all working fine. I booted the pc last night and the network adapter isn't connecting any more. It's dual booted with windows using UEFI (it had been using BIOS and also worked fine) and the windows partition has no problems connecting. I'm very new to linux, can anyone tell me where my first steps for tracking down the problem would be?08:51
nickarI've tried restarting the network service as well as disabling ipv6. using a boot disc also results in no network connection so I'm not certain a reinstall would help either08:52

YankDownUndernickar: And is the card a wifi or an ethernet?08:56
nickarethernet via the motherboard08:57
YankDownUndernickar: Fair enough. Since the point at which it was working - and now - has anything been changed/moved/installed/uninstalled since?08:57
nickaron my windows partition, yes, I installed some drivers. nothing on the linux partition that I can remember08:58
YankDownUndernickar:  Drivers for....?08:58
nickarmotherboard, it was a fresh install08:58
YankDownUnderDrivers for the motherboard - and that being said, the drivers that are for the motherboard can and sometimes will make direct changes that affect how the hardware operations...hmm...08:59
nickarah, that's really annoying. i didn't realise the windows partition could do much to harm ubuntu09:00
YankDownUndernickar: Right oh...have you been in the BIOS to double-check all the settings and configurations pertaining to the network card and other network functionality?09:00
nickari can do that right now, i haven't changed settings myself but I can have a look09:01
YankDownUnderIt's not the fact that it's "Windows" - it's merely the fact that a "driver" that affects the "system" were installed...doesn't matter if it was in Windows, MacOS or linux...09:01
=== michael__ is now known as Guest65904
YankDownUndernickar: Make sure that PXE boot is turned off - and "Wake on LAN" is turned off - and as well - if you have "serial/COM" ports setup in the BIOS. turn them off as well...hmm?09:01
nickarok, i'll have a hunt for those settings09:02
ducassenickar: are you booted in ubuntu now?09:02
nickari have just booted to my bios09:02
nickarI can go back to ubuntu quickly if needed09:03
umatrangoloHi09:03
umatrangolo1 2 3 you hear me ??? :)09:03
ducassenickar: check the bios while you're at it, no hurry09:04
nickarI'm in the bios and the only network option i can find is something called the 'uefi network stack'. this is disabled09:04
YankDownUnderducasse: He might check the BIOS when he's checking the BIOS...(pun truly intended) - that's where I sent him originally...09:04
YankDownUndernickar: There is NOTHING else - anywhere? Not in advanced settings or anything like that? Nothing?09:05
ducasseYankDownUnder: i meant 'while you are already there' :)09:06

=== jstein is now known as Guest54902
YankDownUndernickar: Um...is there nothing that is apparently apparent?09:07
nickarnot that I can see. I have just switched from BIOS legacy mode to UEFI (hence the fresh windows install) but the network was working fine for ubuntu after that.09:08
nickaruntil just now anyway09:08
=== jstein__ is now known as jstein
YankDownUnderNot very clear about that "until just now" bit...hmm...09:08
nickarsorry, until last night when the ethernet connection stopped working09:09
nickarok, the PXE setting only comes up when you have the UEFI stack enabled. so I think by having it disabled, which it is, PXE is also disabled09:09
YankDownUndernickar: Does the ethernet connect if you switch back to legacy mode? And something else to try, was that you said "UEFI Network Stack" was disabled - does the system work with it enabled?09:10
nickari'll try both, give me a sec09:10
YankDownUndernickar: Well, you have two things to try - the "Legacy" boot and also chaning the "UEFI Network Stack" to see if you can get the network working...09:11
nickaryes, i'll try them separately09:11
OerHeksnickar, windows 10? fastboot enabled? that could prevent this too, hijacking Ethernet/wifi09:11

umbeonighthi. I seem to have an issue with my new ubuntu 16.04 LTS netinstall. When the system boots, I am getting ```/dev/sda2: clea, xxxxx/yyyyy files zzzzz/aaaaa blocks``` and the message just stays there. I can switch to a different TTY but it is annoying18:11
umbeonightI have tried reinstalling the OS too... made no difference18:11
EriC^^Freddon: ok, i'd copy your stuff off to another hdd18:11
tatertotsrick did your printer manufacture not provide you with a linux installer?18:11
_adbrick6860: are you using cups? there's a directory /etc/cups/ppd/ that all my *.pdd files live in18:11
FreddonEriC^^: ok, and then what should i do ?18:12
umbeonightjust slightly worried about what could be the issue here.18:12

tatertotsI only ask because i have a brother printer and brother provided a nice installer18:12
rick6860_adb, i am using cups. Should I put it there?18:12
reevvhello. anyone has time and the mood to help me get to the bottom of an apache access issue?:-)18:12
tatertotsthat's so thoughtful and kind of brother to provide a linux installer18:13
_adbrick6860: that is the location i put my .ppd files in, and i managed to get them working, but i'm not an expert, so listen to the advise of others.18:13
rick6860_adb, does it really affect install and use of printer?18:13
EriC^^Freddon: reinstall and copy your stuff back18:13
EriC^^Freddon: make a fresh partition table type gpt on the 500gb hdd18:13
umbeonightI also changed the fsck flag in /etc/fstab, and removed ```quiet splash``` from the grub.cfg file, and no difference18:13
FreddonEriC^^: oh :*( ok. thank you very much for your time and your kindness to help me out.18:13

k1l_umbeonight: but the other ttys work?18:20
umbeonightk1l_ yup. It just says /dev/sda2 clean... blah blah files blah blah blocks. If I press CTRL ALT F1 though, I get a TTY.18:21
umbeonightk1l_ it is showing the message on tty 718:21
Captain_Protonrick6860: should be raw print job from to ip adress are you tring to scan to pc or anything like that?18:21

Captain_Protonrick6860: I know you would not have a problem just printer as there is many ways to do it, this is auth issue. Do you a have control of the printer? You could create a default group with no auth just for testing..18:30

k1l_ronaldsmazitis: did you remove that ppa?22:10
ronaldsmazitisyes22:11
k1l_ronaldsmazitis: then ran "sudo apt clean && sudo apt update"?22:11
bekksubuntu289: ask the admin user to run that script after he/she creates a new guest user.22:11
ubuntu289bekks: This is going to be running on a public access computer for a public library so that really isn't an option lol22:12
ronaldsmazitishttp://paste.ubuntu.com/22369091/22:12
bekksubuntu289: then how are those "new guest accounts" created?22:12
ronaldsmazitisI did however package struggles with errors22:13
ubuntu289bekks: I have lightdm auto logging into the default guest user session22:13
bekksubuntu289: they all use the same single guest account.22:13
k1l_ronaldsmazitis: "sudo apt-get install --reinstall libapache2-mod-php7.0"22:13
ineedsomehelpHello?22:14

bekksubuntu289: and what is that root script supposed to do?22:14
ineedsomehelpHi, I need some help with my touchpad... I can run an external usb mouse, but my touchpad doesn't seem to be working. I'm running a live usb of Ubuntu 16.0422:14
ubuntu289bekks: it need to check to see if a python app is running and if not launches it22:15
bekksubuntu289: and why does your app require root?22:15
maxstirner_k1l_ again me. I have another problem. When I install wine and try to install metatrader 4 it asks me about proxy server options. Do you know how I solve this?22:16
ubuntu289bekks: So the guest user account cannot kill that process22:16
k1l_ronaldsmazitis: sudo apt purge libapache2-mod-php7.022:16
ineedsomehelp Hi, I need some help with my touchpad... I can run an external usb mouse, but my touchpad doesn't seem to be working. I'm running a live usb of Ubuntu 16.0422:16
bekksubuntu289: create an application account instead, dont run your app as root.22:16
bekks!patience | ineedsomehelp22:16
ubottuineedsomehelp: Don't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. While you wait, try searching https://help.ubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org or http://askubuntu.com/22:16
ubuntu289bekks: Now thats an idea. How would I launch the script under this application account when the guest account logs in?22:16
bekksubuntu289: and create a cronjob for that application user checking wether the app is running, and start it if it isnt running.22:17
maxstirner_There is nothing on Internet. Try every solution but they aren't work.22:17
k1l_maxstirner_: i dont know that program. look at the wine appdatabase or the windows documents what to set there22:17
ubuntu289bekks: let me do some more research on how to do an application user and I'll give that a try! Thanks for the suggestion!22:18
ronaldsmazitisthanks k1l looks like it helped to install libapache2-mod-php7.022:18
bekksubuntu289: sudo adduser ...22:18
ineedsomehelp Hi, I need some help with my touchpad... I can run an external usb mouse, but my touchpad doesn't seem to be working. I'm running a live usb of Ubuntu 16.0422:18
fartfaceI have one specific user who is unable to ssh into a machine.  He gets connection to port 22 refused.  I'm on the same network, and can ssh in fine.  He can also ssh into another server on the same network without issue, it's just that one server that looks like it's blocking him.22:19
ubuntu289bekks: I guess I'm still a little confused. I know how to add a new user but I don't know how that will execute the script when the guest account is launched?22:19
fartfaceI don't see anything about his ip in the hosts.deny file, but I'm kind of at a loss of what to check next22:19
fartfaceAny ideas?22:19
bekksubuntu289: if will have no connection with your guest account. just create a new user account used for your application, and create a cron job, as I stated above.22:19
maxstirner_Ok, then. k1l_22:19
ubuntu289okay I'll give it a shot22:19
ubuntu289Thanks again!22:19

dhidaksjhi! I'm trying to boot from a USB on my asus x205t laptop, but it has a crippled EFI bios that only supports booting from efi usbs. I'm wondering how I can install GRUB to my main partition on my hard drive, so that when I restart my computer, it will show the grub bootloader, and hopefully detect my USB22:27
dhidaksjIs this possible?22:27
bekksdhidaksj: why do you think it supports booting from efi usbs only?22:27
dhidaksjI just want GRUB bootloader installed on my laptop that has windows essentially. I'm on ubuntu live CD right now22:28
dhidaksjbekks because I tried booting from multiple USBs and when I loaded easybcd it said i'm running a 32 bit efi bios22:28
bekksdhidaksj: so why dont you use the live cd for installing then?22:28
dhidaksjso my bios is essentially siht22:28
dhidaksjwell I'm not trying to install ubutnu that's the thing22:28
dhidaksji need grub support22:28
bekksdhidaksj: having a 32bit efi bios doesnt tell you anything about "efi usbs only".22:28
dhidaksjthat's why I came here22:28
dhidaksjwell when I treid to boot from a usb it wouldn't recognize it22:29
dhidaksjit's a fat32 usb formatted as mbr22:29
dhidaksjit pretty much dosen't recognize any USBs22:29
dhidaksjso I was wondering if installing GRUB would solve this22:29
bekksdhidaksj: and how did you make that usb bootable then?22:29
dhidaksjwell it was through a program called Transmac22:29
dhidaksjI'm trying to install Hackintosh.22:29
bekksdhidaksj: just putting files on it isnt enough.22:29
dhidaksjYEah it formatted it as fat32 i believe and "restored" the dmg to the USB22:30
bekksdhidaksj: Ah, so you are trying to illegaly install OSX. Those activities arent supported on this network.22:30
dhidaksjit's a well known method to make the usb bootable, but for some reason MY laptop doesn't recognize it22:30
dhidaksjyea it's not illegal, just against apple tos22:30
dhidaksjget your facts straight22:30
bekksWhich makes it illegal. EOD.22:30
dhidaksjwhat22:31
dhidaksjwell I was trying to install windows too with a duel boot and it wouldnt' recognize my windows USB either22:31
dhidaksjjust so you know22:31
chldI just upgraded to 15.10. Previously I'd configured my grub to save the last used menu entry, and everything worked fine. Now, though, grub doesn't seem to be able to read from grubenv.22:31
dhidaksjthe only usb it recognizes is one that's formatted as fat32 mbr22:31
dhidaksjI was merely wondering if GRUB could solve my USB booting issues :)22:32
dhidaksjcan anyone helpful help me?22:32
OerHekshttp://askubuntu.com/questions/560741/creating-a-boot-disc-and-installing-ubuntu-asus-x205ta whole stories22:32
dhidaksjyes I'M trying to install grub to my main partition22:33
chldActually, I think it works now22:33
OerHeksits 14.04 but still valid i guess22:33
dhidaksjthat's all I want. how do I install grub to my main partition?22:33
bekkschld: and now you're going to update to 16.04?22:33
dhidaksjI'm on a live CD 16.0422:33
dhidaksjI only managed to boot from my Ubuntu USB  because I put something called bootefia32 into my boot directory on my ubuntu stick22:34
dhidaksjso I was just wondering how I install grub22:34
dhidaksjI would preferably like to install the bootloader only, no ubuntu22:34
dhidaksjis this possible?22:34
ubuntu289bekks: Sorry to bare the bad news but I added a new user account and added the following to the crontab '@rebooot /bin/name-of-my-script'. This shell script of mine just starts a while loop looking for a python script that builds out a GUI application using tkinter. I can see the script is running with cron at reboot but it's to early in the boot processes. The script will fail because the python script requires the window manager to22:34
ubuntu289am I missing something?22:35
bekksubuntu289: Yes. you are using @reboot, which will start the script only once and will not check for a running script every few minutes.22:35
dhidaksjbekk can you help me ? :)22:35
dhidaksjThis isn't about anything but installing GRUB.22:36
dhidaksjHow would I go about this?22:36
ubuntu289Will cron be able to run the script continually if I don't specify a time interval?22:37

aroonihey folks!  i've got ubuntu 16.04 upgraded from 14.04 on my lenovo t420 laptop.  i love it!  but now twice when trying to resume from suspend; i saw the caps lock key flashing and had to shut down my laptop and restart it.  anyway to track down why and fix it ?  thanks!23:05
backboxhello23:07
Newman101Looks like it's a common problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/156630223:07
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1566302 in linux (Ubuntu) "Ubuntu 16.04: Suspend freezes the system after upgrade to linux image 4.4.0-16" [Medium,Won't fix]23:07
aroonioh no, won't fix ? :(23:07
Newman101No workaround so far, AFAIK. :(23:08
tendietimehello23:08
arooniNewman101: so is there a way to run with a different kernel?  or i just have to wait?23:08
tendietimehow is everyone?23:09
vbotkaarooni, still, you might want to review /var/log/pm-suspend.log23:09
aroonihow do i find out what kernel version i'm running?23:09
ikoniauname -r23:09
arooni4.4.0-31-generic23:10
Newman101arooni: To be honest, Lenovos should have the best Ubuntu support out there. Need to investigate if there is a workaround.23:10
aroonireviewing my suspend log, it looks like suspend works sometimes23:11
k1l_arooni: flashing caps sounds like a kernel panic. look at the logs what happend23:11
aroonik1l_: yeah just curious which logs to investigate?23:11
ikonialenovo's hardware is very strong with ubuntu but some versions of the power management firmware / bios is terrible with ubuntu23:11
Newman101AFAIK the biggest issue here is graphics harware.23:11
aroonii think i have the latest bios available for this laptop23:12
k1l_/var/log/syslog. and look at the recycled ones too to find the timing of the issue23:12
ikoniaalso some of the nvidia mode switching in some models is not great with newer versions of prime23:12
arooniis there a way to query what version of bios i have via the command line?23:12
ikoniawhat is the point of querying the bios version - what are you going to do with that ?23:12
ikoniarepeat it into the channel ?23:12
tatertotsarooni you should determine if the problem is consistently reproducible and what steps are need to reproduce the problem23:12
arooniikonia: i guess try to find out if that might be causing the issue if theres a newer version available; i coudl install it and see if it improved thigns23:13
ikoniaarooni: thats just random23:13
ikoniaarooni: just randomly changing versions on things for no reason is not going to help anyone23:13
vbotkaarooni, dmidecode tells you about bios23:15
Guy1524Do any of you know of an equivalent of gnome's 'Drop Down Terminal' extension for unity?23:18
tatertotsyou won't know if it improved things if you don't narrow it down to being consistently reproducible first, without that it could be a coincidence or other variables23:18
xanguaGuy1524: guake23:19
BryanCoguake?23:19
Guy1524k thx23:19
arooniwell it certainly appears intermittant ; i could successfully resume twice; once from suspending via albert and the other time via the powermenu23:19
arooniyou folks are right; the only way forward is to find the exact conditions that make it reproducible23:19
Guy1524from webpage: "Guake Terminal - What is it? Guake is a top-down terminal for Gnome"23:19
Guy1524I want one for unity23:19
xanguaGuy1524: there are other new alternatives but that's the one I remember from years ago23:19
xanguaYou're welcome23:20
tatertotsby trying to consistently reproduce the issue it also gives you a time stamp time frame to look for in the logs23:20
arooniintermittant problems are really the hardest to track down23:20
tatertotsintermittent issues can be a beast23:25
