blackwater1guys, I need your help. Upgraded to 16.04. Now compiz does this. http://i.imgur.com/rArjx99.png00:37
ouroumovWhat did you upgrade from?00:38
blackwater115.1000:46
blackwater1using the gui software update utlity00:46
ouroumovMaybe your config settings got screwed up, did you reinstall ccsm?00:47
blackwater1Unable to locate package ccsm00:48
ouroumovuh00:48
blackwater1i did apt-get install compiz-* after having issues just to be sure00:49
blackwater1is it possible to rollback this upgrade back to 15.10?00:52
ouroumovI don't know, I don't think so00:52
ouroumovMay I ask why you're using compiz?00:52
blackwater1what else would I use?00:53
blackwater1there's marco but it's very basic00:53
blackwater1oh00:53
blackwater1nvm00:54
blackwater1yes compiz and marco00:54
blackwater1what else?00:54
ouroumovMarco + Compton is a good option if you only care about screen tearing00:54
ouroumovDuring video playback00:54
ouroumovIt's lighter and less buggy than compiz00:55
blackwater1i could just be a newbie, but marco doesnt give me much options for window managment01:04
blackwater1window snapping, sizing, etc01:04
blackwater1no vertical workspaces either unless im wrong01:05
ouroumovYou can set up those things using classic tools, the workspace switcher applet let you pick the layout, snapping can be enabled via MATE Tweak01:06
ouroumovAlso, my guess is your issue was triggered by something during the upgrade, maybe you should consider a clean reinstall of 16.04?01:08
aeeHello all01:23
aeeNeed some help01:23
aeeI recently migrated from Ubuntu 14.04 to Ubuntu-Mate 16.04 and I'm having problems when playing video files (not audio. The audio of the Video file always works fine). I didn't have this problem with 14.04.01:23
aeeI'm using VLC player (although I tried using another video player and got the same problem) and when the window size is small the video plays fine without problems, but when i resize the window, reproduction gets slower. When the window uses all the screen or when the window exceeds certain size, video freezes.01:23
ouroumovreproduction?01:23
aeeyes01:24
aeevideo playing01:25
aeei speak spanish01:25
ouroumovI take it you don't think this is a hardware limitation?01:25
aeeas i said: it worked fine in 14.0401:26
aeewhith mate desktop01:26
aeemy hardware is limited, but it worked fine before01:27
ouroumovWhat window manager are using under MATE Tweak -> Windows -> Window Manager?01:27
aeemarco01:27
ouroumovTry Marco+Compton01:28
aeesoftware composition01:28
aeeit didnt get better01:29
aeeit get worse01:29
ouroumovCan you go to welcome -> Getting started and hit the two buttons in the "driver and firmware" steps then reboot?01:30
ouroumovAlso01:31
ouroumovYou don't happen to have an AMD GPU by any chance?01:31
aeeintegrated video01:31

ouroumovk01:31
aeein "getting started" i have a "driver" button. Is this one?01:32

blackwater1ouroumov: i dont know that a clean install of 16.04 would actually fix the problem, im considering reinstalling but probably back to 15.10.. you know, the way it was before01:40
blackwater1you seem knowledgeable01:41
ouroumov15.10 is no longer supported01:43
ouroumovaee, I've never seem that before, maybe ask about it on the forums? https://ubuntu-mate.community/01:44
aeeok. Thanks anyway01:45
ouroumovblackwater1, can you try something? Create a new user, log into it, set the preferences to use compiz and see if the bug persists01:51
blackwater1sure01:51
blackwater1brb01:53
blackwater1ouroumov: logged in with new user, set as compiz, no issues so far. switched back to main user, switched to compiz, acted funny, switched theme back to ambiant mate, seems ok, switched back to numix, seems ok01:58
blackwater1ouroumov: it doesnt always do that01:58
blackwater1back in 15.10 when i click reboot, the theme would change to a plain grey and some icons would be missing, and it would just get stuck there and not reboot01:59
ouroumovThere have been theme adjustments since 15.10, mainly GTK version stuff01:59
blackwater1so as this point I can't tell if it's a 16.04 issue, a mate issue, a compiz issue or a numix theme issue01:59
ouroumovblackwater1, I know what you mean lol, I've seen that too01:59
blackwater1ouroumov: but it wouldn't happen always either01:59
ouroumovI think it's a MATE issue but I haven't managed to get a screenshot of that in action for a bug report yet01:59
ouroumovblackwater1, for me it usually happens when pluma is open with a changed file that has not been saved02:00
blackwater1i almost keep forcing myself to like ubuntu but as much as i hate windows and it being a resource hog, it seems like windows 10 is just more reliable02:00
blackwater1idk if switching to straight up ubuntu would be a good idea02:02
ouroumovblackwater1, I think you'd get some benefits from a fresh 16.04 install02:02
blackwater1then just installing mate desktop.. or would that be literally the same thing02:02
ouroumovIt wouldn't be the same02:02
blackwater1i mean, what's different besides default programs02:03
ouroumovStuff like Welcome, Software boutique etc have been created for Ubuntu MATE02:03
blackwater1welcome is just the welcome screen that pops up and no one ever uses, right?02:03
ouroumovRemind me how you got here again? :)02:04
blackwater1i dont follow02:04
ouroumovDidn't you get here using the "Chatroom" button in welcome? (I don't remember exactly the label)02:05
blackwater1oh.02:05
blackwater1no02:05
blackwater1i googled ubuntu mate irc channel02:05
ouroumovPeople use Welcome for post install stuff mainly02:05
blackwater1i didnt mean it in a rude though, if it came out like that i apologizer02:06
blackwater1way*02:06
ouroumovyeah no problem02:06
ouroumovAnyway02:06
blackwater1im just trying to figure out the best option here, I like to setup my workspaces/virtual desktops a certain way and start being productive02:07
ouroumovI think your problem comes from something screwwy in the compiz settings02:07
blackwater1i dont wanna reinstall 16.04 and have everything seem normal then somehow down the line problems start coming up02:07
blackwater1it's possible02:07
ouroumovMaybe you can use that new user you created?02:07
blackwater1I could try resetting compiz settings to default02:08
ouroumovyes02:08
blackwater1ok i did that, i'll give it a week or so see how it pans out02:09
blackwater1i like ubuntu and i really like mate, i certainly appreciate all the effort they put into it02:10
blackwater1i just hate tinker with things just so they can work properly02:10
ouroumovYeah I don't blame you on that one02:11
ouroumovI would also like for things to "just work", but we're not there yet and I don't think this is an attainable goal either02:12
blackwater1it's my workstation too, not a home machine, so it really sucks when things are buggy. i can't stand windows so i'll always stick with ubuntu, and i hope it's just a compiz issue not mate. it would make sense that window manager issues would cause issues.. with windows, and not the OS.02:13
blackwater1ouroumov: how do you mean, though? what have you ran into that doesn't just work?02:13
blackwater1on my end, things are buggy, but things that do work do seem to just work, you know?02:14
ouroumovblackwater1, well a couple of things. That 16.04 release has had a few issues. I've got lock screen problems, the gvfsd-smb bug (this one though is on the verge of being fixed in 16.04, I know because I'm following the bug report) I've also been hit by various things hardware related (drivers)02:15
blackwater1it's funny how things that worked in 15.10 would stop working in 16.0402:16
ouroumov'tragic' is the word I'd use02:16
blackwater1now, is it a 16.04 issue or a mate 16.04 issue?02:19
ouroumov16.04. Most problems come from the Ubuntu Base, the few problems I have with MATE are not really show-stoppers you know, just annoyances02:20
blackwater1i guess i should've read up on reviews before upgrading02:20
ouroumovI don't think any of your troubles come from Ubuntu Base02:21
ouroumovI mean, you're using compiz. Compiz is notoriously buggy for starters02:21

JohnDroidHello, I need to connect to a server using a ssh-key and I got this error msg: sign_and_send_pubkey: signing failed: agent refused operation08:15
JohnDroidI tried to disable the ssh-agent at boot start. The process is still running and it won't kill even if i do sudo kill -908:16
ouroumovhm08:25
ouroumovyou need the ssh agent I think08:25
ouroumovyou're using ssh-copy-id?08:25
JohnDroidI'm using ssh-add08:31
JohnDroidwhen I do ssh-add -l there is already my key. Event if I do ssh-add -D the key is not removed08:32
ouroumovIs there a particular reason you don't want to use the classic route of ssh-copy-id?08:32
JohnDroidI don't need ssh-copy-id my public key is already configured on the server side. I just want to load my ssh key in the agent to connect to the server like I always did under Kubuntu. I just switched to Mate recently08:37
ouroumovDid you verify the file permissions in ~/.ssh?08:41

mate|31050Hi, all.  Receiving an error message when running software updater on 32-bit Mate.  First, there's a warning that only a partial upgrade is possible.  Then I receive a new window that indicates an unresolvable error: unable to calculate upgrade.  Anyone else seen this or have an idea about what's going on?12:48
Akuliare you upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04?12:50
mate|31050No: I installed 16.04 on a windows celeron powered laptop12:51
Akuliwell, that doesn't surprise me :) 16.04 seems to be pretty awful and buggy overall12:52

DarkPsydeLordsslove, yes! its pretty much a storage22:07
ouroumovpavlushka, hi22:07
ssloveDarkPsydeLord, funny thing is, u can count the black people in mexico on one hand22:08
ouroumovDarkPsydeLord, sslove, please don't stray off topic when there's someone on the channel asking a question22:08
pavlushkaHi ouroumov !22:08
ssloveand still give someone the bird, lol22:08
ouroumovpavlushka, what do you mean "select any user other than that showing" ?22:08
DarkPsydeLordouromov: i apologize didnt realize we had a queue question...22:09
DarkPsydeLordmissed a u22:09
ssloveouroumov, DarkPsydeLord ur right, i'm in #ubuntu-offtopic if u wanna shoot the sh1t22:09
ouroumov^^22:09
sslovewhat was the question?22:10
ouroumov<pavlushka> I am having an issue with login for a quite long time, with the login prompt, when I just select any user other than that showing, the login prompt vanishes and switching to tty shells, it says a start job is running.22:10
pavlushkaouroumov: I have a normal user, and an admin, and guest, so i have 3 choices in login but when I choose the other than that is selected from the previous login, the prompt vanishes, and its getting worse.22:11
sslovesorry pavlushka, didn't see ur q22:12
ouroumovpavlushka, so when you hit tty1 can you switch back to GUI using CTRL+ALT+F7?22:12
pavlushkasslove: np22:12
ouroumovpavlushka, I have multiple user accounts on several machines running 16.04 LTS and I've not seen that kind of issues22:13
ssloveu could try installing a different login manager rather than the headache of troubleshooting it if it's not a simple solution22:13
pavlushkaouroumov: nope, I logged into tty3 shell and used startx.22:13
ouroumovpavlushka, is the system fully up to date?22:13
pavlushkabecause even tty1 shells says after that selecting event, "a start job is running"22:14
pavlushkaouroumov: yep, updated using tty3.22:14
ouroumovpavlushka, is the login prompt LightDM or mate-screensaver?22:14
pavlushkaouroumov: oops, supposed to be the default, coz I didn't change any.22:15
ouroumovpavlushka, even by default there's two programs handling logins:22:16
ouroumovLightDM - you hit it when you boot22:16
ouroumovmate-screensaver - you hit it after locking your screen using CTRL+ALT+L22:16
pavlushkaSo I just do "dpkg-reconfigure lightdm" and see if it fixes the issue?22:17
ouroumovIf that's the one we're talking about, you sure can try22:17
pavlushkaouroumov: I have the problem right after booting.22:18
pavlushkafrom the beginning22:18
ouroumovLightdm it is then22:18
pavlushkahmm22:19
pavlushkaI use Xubuntu and Lubuntu and Ubuntu, but faced this in only Ubuntu-Mate22:19
ouroumovDid you do something specific with this Ubuntu MATE install?22:20
ouroumovAnything that might have triggered this behavior?22:20
pavlushkaouroumov: nope, I just installed some packages I used to use, but no alteration.22:21
ouroumovDo you have a list of the packages?22:21
ouroumovAlso, what method did you use to create that new desktop user? The GUI or sudo adduser?22:22
pavlushkaouroumov: The admin user was during installation, normal one was created using "sudo adduser"22:24
pavlushkaand let me pastebin the list then.22:24
pavlushkaouroumov: http://paste.ubuntu.com/22855528/22:38
ouroumovWhat's k3b?22:39
sslovedisc burning software22:39
sslovefor kde22:40
pavlushkaouroumov: kde based burner22:40
bekksA very powerful cd/dvd creation software.22:40
ouroumovlot of stuff here is already in Ubuntu MATE by default22:40
ouroumovanyway, did you dpkg-reconfigure lightdm already?22:41
pavlushkabecause the dafault brasero craps my lots of CD/DVD22:41
pavlushkaouroumov: nope22:41
pavlushkanow doing it.22:42
pavlushkaok, done22:43
ouroumovReboot/check?22:45
pavlushkaouroumov: give me some minutes, something pending.22:49
sslovepavlushka, u try the burning software from xfce?22:49
pavlushkasslove: nope22:50
DarkPsydeLordwhats a dvd?22:50
ouroumovDarkPsydeLord, it's an obsolete storage medium22:51
sslovedamn and i've got stacks of new dvds22:56
DarkPsydeLordooooh, nice! now you are rich since they are old XD22:57
sslovei am rich22:57
sslovegot everything but the money22:57
pavlushkabrb22:57
DarkPsydeLordwell last time i used one i think... was 0322:59
rahtgazthat's the same as me DarkPsydeLord. the last time I used one was about the 3rd of this month23:01
DarkPsydeLordrahtgaz, lol XD i ment the year but yeah not so common now isnt it23:06
rahtgazcoincidentally they are discussing just that on #linux. Not so common for sure among home users, but still widely used professionally23:07
rahtgazI don't agree they are obsolete. Just on the home market.23:08
rahtgazHeck, you will get fired in many companies if you even dare bringing a USB stick in. Those things are considered dirty by many IT managers. Like some kind of used condom23:09
DarkPsydeLordwell if you use windumbs you must be afraid of every single usb stick on the planet23:27
DarkPsydeLordbut its not the same for us posix users23:28
ouroumovDarkPsydeLord, it's exactly the same23:28
ouroumovBadUSB is not a windows vuln23:28
ouroumovIt's a fundamental problem23:29
DarkPsydeLordi know theres some issues regarding information but nothing you can handle23:29
DarkPsydeLordcant23:29
ouroumovIf you can plug an USB keyboard and have your OS detect it as such, then you're vulnerable, period.23:29
DarkPsydeLordwell somehow i agree and disagree23:30
rflemingGreetings!23:30
DarkPsydeLordbut i just like to argue about everything XD23:30
DarkPsydeLordrfleming: hi how are ya!23:31
ouroumovHello rfleming23:31
rflemingDarkPsydeLord, Great thanks!23:31
ouroumovrfleming, what literature do you spawn from again? Your name reminds me of something.23:31
rflemingjust turned my secondary laptop to Mate and giving it a go23:31
rflemingouroumov, I don't spawn from any literature.  This happens to be my name ;)23:31
ouroumovwow cool23:32
DarkPsydeLordi love mate as i always say, it reminds me my beloved ubuntu 823:32
DarkPsydeLordgnome 2 at its best23:32
rflemingI replaced budgie-remix23:32
* rfleming looks at everyone looking it up :)23:33
rflemingIt's been a while since I used MATE.  It's really grown23:35
DarkPsydeLordlol not me23:35
DarkPsydeLordim cli now! when i get home i will look for it23:36
rflemingI like budgie.  I can't wait for Canonical to roll it in as an alt23:36
DarkPsydeLordmy lynx wont lemme see the pictures23:36
rflemingaww...23:36
rflemingDarkPsydeLord, mark this for later https://solus-project.com/budgie/23:37
rflemingBudgie is the desktop for SolusOS23:37
rflemingand it's built tight to GNOME23:37
rfleming... it's kinda like Cinnamon, but better :)23:38
DarkPsydeLordo yeah! i tried solus once23:38
DarkPsydeLordbeautiful23:38
rahtgazinfidel!23:39
rahtgazyou don't try Solus once. You try it forever23:39
rflemingsomeone released an Ubuntu remix with Budgie as the DE... Canonical is supposedly going to make it an official remix some day23:39
DarkPsydeLordwell i mainly use umate and arch so no solus needed for now!23:40
* rfleming would love to tinker with arch... but I don't have time anymore. I just want something that works.23:40
DarkPsydeLordthats why i use umate23:41
DarkPsydeLordwhen in need of a distro that works23:41
rflemingI used to use Gentoo and Fluxbox... I was a known masochist...23:41
rflemingthen I got married and had kids.23:42
DarkPsydeLordi was a mint user but well you know ubuntu mate just looks great and remind me my early days in linux23:42
rflemingI've been floating between Unity, XFCE and Gnome for a while... did a brief stint with lxde23:42
rflemingyeah, I used to use mate... until manual updating broke my system and I realized that clem renames deb packages to fit his needs :)23:43
rflemingso I went back to xubuntu 1423:43
rahtgazI'm still a fan of tiling vms. And mate shares a space with i3.23:44
rflemingI'm still trying to figure a few things out.23:44
DarkPsydeLordi'm still23:44
rflemingI'm going to use i3w on my 'server' laptop23:44
DarkPsydeLordXD23:44
DarkPsydeLordim curious about e1723:44
rfleminglol23:45
rahtgazyou do it, rfleming. the best twm out there23:45
rflemingrahtgaz, that's the plan... but tinker time is premium time :)23:45
rflemingDarkPsydeLord, when it comes to E, I find YouTube the best place to try it out.23:45
DarkPsydeLordthats true thats why i like arch once you set your machine the way you like it you just keep rolling23:46
rahtgazwell, it's just getting the initial setup right. one or two days until you tweak enough until you are satisfied. then it's rock and roll23:46
ssloveno way, e is a delight to play around with23:46
ssloveu can tweak the hell out of it23:46
DarkPsydeLordthere you are!23:46
rflemingsslove, yeah but what practical use is it? >:)23:46
rahtgazi honestly don't know what e is23:47
rahtgazand with that name, i don't want to google it :p23:47
ssloverfleming, what do u mean?23:47
ssloverfleming, it's a de23:47
rflemingsslove, I'm just teasing23:48
ssloverfleming, u run apps like in any other23:48
ssloverfleming, you punk23:48
sslove:p23:48
* rfleming is guilty23:48
DarkPsydeLordhahahaha23:48
ssloveanyone here flying from the us to malaysia by chance?23:49
rflemingIcons seem to be strange in mate... but maybe it's my expectations23:49
rahtgazthat's a shot in the dark eh23:49
rahtgazrfleming: not really. You are right. I find mate icons the one thing I dislike23:50
ssloverfleming, unless ur being a punk again, ubuntu mate comes with loads of alt icon sets, including several versions of faenza, still the best imho23:50
rflemingok, so monochrome panel icons are a pipe-dream then?23:50
rflemingone of the things I LOVE with my xubuntu23:51
rflemingsslove, Icons aren't a problem  I like using the 'paper' icons with the 'arc-darker' theme23:51
rflemingI just don't like colour icons in my panels :)23:52
ssloveyea why are the panel icons not monochrome? for instance, clipit panel icon on unity is but on mate no, even with same icon theme, faenza23:52
rahtgazugh, flat icons!23:52
sslovelol23:52
sslovenot flat, monochrome23:52
rflemingrahtgaz, You're entitled to your opinion... but I'm entitled to ridicule your ridiculous opinions.23:52
sslovethere's a difference23:52
rahtgazI was talking about the paper icons.23:52
rahtgazAnd I am going to ridicule the hell of those icons now23:53
rfleminghaha23:53
rahtgaz:p23:53
sslovepaper icons? what's that?23:53
rflemingfor those wanting to see: https://snwh.org/paper/icons23:53
sslovetnx23:54
rflemingSorry DarkPsydeLord... I don't think Lynx is going to show that proper :)23:54
rahtgazdman. that's ugly. that's like a 7 year old icon set. it's only missing sticky figures23:54
rflemingrahtgaz, is Moka (https://snwh.org/moka) betteR?23:54
DarkPsydeLordrfleming, its ok i see some words in my black screen :) now im tempted to open it in my phone23:55
rahtgazhmm.. actualy that moka seems nicer. and it's not flat23:55
rflemingFaba (the ones below) are the basis and fallback to Moka.  If it doesn't exist in Moka, then Moka uses Faba23:55
sslovethose are pretty nice actually, but what i have found with most icon sets is they're not complete, so ur system ends up looking kinda shite23:56
rflemingall three of those have PPAs23:56
sslovewhereas faenza is very nearly complete23:56
rflemingand very square23:56
rflemingin a Pulp Fiction sort of way23:56
rfleming:)23:56
ssloveyea i like that look23:56
rflemingI wonder how elementary-icon-theme looks in Mate23:57
rflemingthat's the default for xubuntu23:57
rahtgazinstalling moka23:57
rflemingbut yeah... monochrome panel icons would be really nice23:58
* rfleming believes a rainbow doesn't belong in the panel23:58
sslovei like the lubuntu icons too, they did a pretty good job with those, now i wish ubuntu proper would get on the ball and release a new icon set, they hired the faenza guy years ago, for what?23:59
onmytoesouroumov: hello, to no avail23:59
