Hail_Spacecaketrying to troubleshoot a xubuntu problem01:57
Hail_Spacecakewhen I log in, I get to a screen that has just the background01:57
Hail_Spacecakeand mouse cursor01:57
Hail_Spacecakeno desktop icons, no menus01:57
Hail_Spacecakealt-f2 to pop up loading applications works, actually running applications like this works01:58
Hail_Spacecakeand the subsystem that shows the popups for things like network connectivity works01:58
Hail_Spacecakeso I assume there's just one x-related program that failed to load01:58
Hail_Spacecakealso what's the difference between xfce session and xubuntu session?01:59

astraljavaHi all, would anyone know where to look when my mouse pointer disappears after logging in to a locked session? It is visible just fine after an initial login from boot-up. I can resolve it by going into a virtual terminal and switching back to GUI, so it's not a show-stopper.07:15
flocculantastraljava: 16.04? intel?07:19
astraljavaflocculant: Yep x 207:26
astraljavaUp-to-date too, no pending updates.07:26

xubuntu33dThe right click menu is basically gone & the wallpaper goes to some default ocean front?11:30
knometry pressing alt+f2 and running xfdesktop11:30

xubuntu33dOk I wrote that down I will try it is there a fix?11:31

xubuntu15dopening any folder flips it to default12:01
xubuntu15drunning xf-desktop settings show the correct wallpaper but it doesn't change until I restart. Then it stays until I open a folder?12:03
xubuntu72wHi! Could anybody help me? Sorry for grammar.. I downloaded the latest xubuntu 64bit package, moved it onto usb flash using unetbootin, tried to istall. But.. It freezes when blue-like wallpaper comes on the screen. Checked distrib for errors - seems to be no problems with that. What's wrong? Maybe, someone knows..12:07
G4b1txubuntu72w: please try to make a bootable usb using Rufus12:13
xubuntu23wHi! I installed the latest version of xubuntu, but screen resolution sucks:D I tried to change it in display settings, but there's only one option - 640*480 and nothing more. Seems to be something with display driver (C.O. ahah!). But maybe someone would tell me how exactly I can try to fix it? Thanks14:58
xubuntu23wp.s. soryy for gramar14:59
cfhowlettxubuntu23w, you might need to install graphics drivers for full capability14:59
xubuntu23wI'm a failure sorry can you tell what I have to do?:D15:01

HerbertI have just installed Xubuntu 16 32bit and everything is great except the software download application isn't working. There are just dots where everything should be listed. Is there a solution to this?18:21
knomei guess you mean xubuntu 16.0418:21
HerbertYes.18:22
knomehaven't heard or seen the problem you describe, but as a workaround, you can use any package manager18:23
HerbertIt shows the catagories but no apps. only dots. Even installed software just has spinning symbol.18:23
HerbertIt had a pop up window saying to shop with an "OK" button. After that, nothing.18:25
HerbertI can try reloading the OS. I have to be able to get updates.18:27
knomedid you read what i said?18:27
HerbertDoes the workaround provide updates?18:28
knomethe software handling updates is separate18:28
knomesure, you can run the updates from package managers too, but that's not mandatory18:28
HerbertOk. Thank you.18:28
knomeand yes, any other package manager can start the update process too18:29
knomeand if it's a new installation, redownloading likely won't help18:29
knomehave you searched launchpad.net if somebody has reported that bug?18:29
Unit193Could try refreshing software sources, purge and re-install appstream stuff, etc.18:29
knomeUnit193 gives good advice too, if you have the time to go through some steps18:30
HerbertI will go there now.18:30
HerbertHow do you refresh software sources?18:37
mrkrampsHerbert, in case of doubt in terminal:$ sudo apt-get update18:41
TheQuestionmarkJust upgraded my housemate's system from 14.04 to 16.04 what resulted in having no network connection after reboot. Is this a common issue and if so, what can be done to fix this?20:02

ubottuTesting... Testing... 1. 2.. 3...20:50
drumcode303i'm new to linux and just managed to install xubuntu :)20:53
geniidrumcode303: Well, you have found the channel on Freenode which is for the support of Xubuntu, so you seem to be doing all right so far20:56
drumcode303i wanted to install opera as a browser (though i'm looking to install fifth-browser later on, which probably requires a lot more knowledge). now, after opening the .deb package: is the programme that handles the installation named "software"? the alt+tab window name is "gnome software". i don't see through. and there's more: during the password prompt there was a pop-up in the top right corner: opera has been installed...21:01
GeekDudeMy poor AMD GPU :(21:03
GeekDudedrumcode303: have you checked to see if opera actually was installed?21:03
drumcode303i'm just did that I think, in the software list. there is still an install button, so it may seem it's not installed yet. though when I click the button it asks me: are you sure you want to remove opera-stable... - i'm not sure if it's installed or not. :D21:06
GeekDudedrumcode303: check in your whisker menu21:06
GeekDudeIt should have appeared in there automatically if it was installed correctly (I think)21:07
drumcode303how would I go there?21:07
drumcode303the search button top left doesn't know whisker either :p21:08
GeekDudeThe whisker menu is the Xfce/Xubuntu equivalent of the start menu21:10
drumcode303would opera be in /opt if it was installed?21:10
geniiMost likely21:10
drumcode303not in whisker, i'm going to hit the install button in software.21:11
GeekDudeIf you don't mind using the terminal, you can try dpkg to install and/or check if it is installed21:11
GeekDudedpkg -l | grep opera-stable # Checks if opera is in the list of installed packages21:12
GeekDudesudo dpkg -i opera-stable_39.0.2256.48_amd64.deb # Installs the deb package21:12
drumcode303i'm on 32bit, so it's i386 :-) but i'll try out the first command, as now i have a red remove button at least, but no entry in software and none in whisker, hmm.21:15
drumcode303i looked for opera in whisker, it's there i've started it. it's not in /opt though. I'm deeply confused. and still not in the installed list in software, checked up and down twice.21:18
drumcode303the dpkg lists opera with ii infront21:19
GeekDudedrumcode303: what if you type just 'opera' into your terminal?21:22
drumcode303it opens a new tab21:23
GeekDudeah sorry, I didn't see that you had found it in the whisker menu21:23
drumcode303where is it installed now if not in /opt?21:23
GeekDude/usr/bin/opera?21:23
GeekDudeIf you run 'which opera' in your terminal it should tell you where opera is.21:25
drumcode303in usr it seems to be a link only: ../lib/i386-linux-gnu/opera/opera21:25
GeekDudeIt tells me /usr/bin/opera. If I run 'll /usr/bin/opera' it tells me it's a shortcut to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/opera21:26
drumcode303cool! it says usr/bin/opera21:26
GeekDudeIf you're looking for the opera configuration files, those would be in your home directory somewhere21:27
GeekDude~/.config/opera I think21:27
drumcode303as a means to save them? can't edit them from within opera?21:28
drumcode303opening websites or the settings tab won't do anything but show a white page. ok.21:30
drumcode303but the website icons are loaded into the tabs21:34
GeekDudeI don21:58
GeekDudeI don't suppose there's a way for me to debug why enabling the dedicated gpu in 16.04 makes my system highly unstable?21:58
GeekDudeI'm doing it by enabling the DRI_PRIME env variable for the specific applications I want to run with my AMD GPU21:59
GeekDudeOtherwise everything runs off intel gfx21:59
GeekDudeAnd by highly unstable I mean either the X server freezes up (leaving only the cursor working), or the system freezes then crashes outright22:01
drumcode303i don't have sound. how do I check whether I have drivers for onboard sound?22:14
drumcode303ok i have sound: aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav  - just not when playing videos in vlc or parole media player22:22
drumcode303fixed that, too :)22:33
