nhwi38272hello18:50
nhwi38272Can someone help? My software boutique was working fine yesterday. I was downloading card games and whatnot and wanted to download some music applications on my machine. I t returned an error saying "Package operation failed". I have tried sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get install, sudo apt-get upgrade, sudo apt-get autoclean, sudo apt-get clean, sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf. Nothing seems to resolve this issue. I am18:57
nhwi38272up to date with the latest version of Ubuntu Mate.18:57
bekksnhwi38272: Can you pastebin the outcome of "sudo apt update; sudo apt full-upgrade" please and share the URL?18:59
Akulii know where your rm command is coming from :D19:00
nhwi38272copy and paste the outcome of sudo-apt get update?19:01
Akulirun that, and copy-paste what you get to a site like dpaste.com, then give us a link to your paste19:01
Akulibut your rm command is from here, isn't it? https://github.com/linuxmint/mintsources/blob/master/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintSources/mintSources.py#L97519:01
nhwi38272yeah lol ive been trying19:02
bekks!pastebin | nhwi3827219:03
ubottunhwi38272: For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imgur.com/ !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.19:03
bekksnhwi38272: So are you using Mint or Ubuntu?19:03
nhwi38272http://dpaste.com/3BD76AB19:03
Akuliseems much like ubuntu19:04
nhwi38272yeah its ubuntu mate19:04
Akulirun this: cat /etc/apt/sources.list | nc termbin.com 999919:04
Akulii want to see what that looks like19:04
bekksFirst, remove the references to the cdrom in /etc/apt/sources.list19:04
bekksThen run sudo apt update; sudo apt full-upgrade again19:05
nhwi38272so go to sources and uncheck cdrom?19:05
Akuliyes19:05
Akulito be more precise, just add a # in front of it19:05
Akuliyou can edit that file with `sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list`19:06
nhwi38272hot do u put that vertical line in after .list?19:07
nhwi38272how*19:08
Akulidepends on your keyboard layout19:08
Akulion an american keyboard, i think its shift + the key to bottom left from your enter key19:08
Akulion this finnish keyboard its altgr + the key next to left shift19:08
Akulibut you really don't need to use it, this command does the same thing:   nc termbin.com 9999 < /etc/apt/sources.list19:09
nhwi38272ok i entered it19:10
Akuliyou should get a link19:11
Akulipaste it here19:11
nhwi38272http://termbin.com/a3jm19:12
Akuliweird19:14
Akuliyour cdrom is already disabled19:14
Akulihow about this one?    ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d | nc termbin.com 999919:15
Akuliim sorry you need that | character19:15
Akulijust copy-paste it from my message if you have trouble writing it19:15
nhwi38272yeah i found the key19:15
nhwi38272http://termbin.com/m57i19:17
nhwi38272i ran the commands bekks said after unchecking cdrom and there is an ubuntu base update that is 151 kb.it returned Package operation failed. The installation or removal of a software package failed.19:19
bekksPAstebin the entire output.19:30
nhwi38272output for the sudo apt update?19:30
bekksFor both commands.19:30
nhwi38272ok19:30
nhwi38272http://dpaste.com/04NYGK819:32

Akulilol20:01
Akulisorry i just had to20:02
nhwi38272whats wrong wuth my hdd20:02
pavlushkaHello Akuli bekks :)20:02
Akulinhwi38272, seems like it's breaking20:03
bekksnhwi38272: your disk is broken. It is dead.20:03
bekksYou need to replace it.20:03
Akuliin my experience, you can reinstall to get a working system but it will break again some day20:03
Akulior maybe20:03
pavlushkaAkuli: are you using gpt?20:03
Akulihe just needs to reinstall to a less broken sector20:03
nhwi38272ah20:03
Akulipavlushka, i'm not an expert at partitioning20:04
bekksAkuli: and more sectors are dying, and the disk breaks even more.20:04
Akuliall i know is that i can use fdisk to get my disk partitioned and i'm good to go! :D20:04
bekksnhwi38272: Dont listen to him, replace the disk.20:04
Akulias you can see20:04
Akulidont listen to me20:04
pavlushkaha ha ha20:04
Akulissd's are nice20:04
pavlushkabekks: are you using gpt?20:05
bekkspavlushka: Why?20:05
Akuliwith an ssd your computer will be like 3 times faster and they never break20:05
bekksAkuli: Bullshit.20:05
Akulibekks, my personal experience..20:05
bekksAkuli: Every disk can break.20:05
Akuliof course20:05
pavlushkabekks: I need to know about it in practice :)20:05
Akulibut they're much harder to break20:05
Akulibekks, every disk will break, but ssd's last much longer20:06
bekkspavlushka: Then you need to start with an actual support question, not by taking polls.20:06
bekksAkuli: Depends on the usage.20:06
pavlushkabekks: I failed to help this guy http://paste.ubuntu.com/23093629/20:06
bekkspavlushka: there is no GPT system partition.20:07
pavlushkabekks: then why this line "grub-install: warning: this GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won't be possible." ?20:08
bekkspavlushka: that line tells you that there is no EFI System partition to be included.20:08
bekkspavlushka: I just said that ;)20:09
pavlushkabekks: so what can be done in this situation?20:10
bekksCreate an EFI system partition.20:10
pavlushkalabeled as "/boot" ?20:11
pavlushkaI meant mount point20:11
bekksNo, you need to mount it as /boot/efi20:11
pavlushkaaha20:11
pavlushkaat the very beginning of the disk?20:13
bekksYes.20:13
sixwheeledbeastSSD's are "much harder to break"  ... not necessarily SSD's have a finite number of writes, HDD's wear mechanically. So depends on the application.20:54
Akuli...at least they're really fast!20:55
Akuliyou don't realize how much time your computer wastes with disk i/o until you have an ssd20:56
sixwheeledbeastDual drive setups are the ideal solution, /home /swap /tmp etc on HDD, everything else on SSD21:01
Akulii like to put swap to the ssd, and just set the swappiness to something really small21:07
Akuliby default its 60, i crank it down to like 521:07
sixwheeledbeastWhy if you end up with swap you don't have enough RAM, simple as21:08
sixwheeledbeastTRIM (discard) and noatime are also important for SSDs21:13
sixwheeledbeastYou could also consider a switch from CFQ to NOOP if you want the best from your SSD21:24
geko1hi All!21:37
geko1anyone here can help me with @RasberryPi3 Audio issue?21:48

capitaomorteDoes anyone know how to completely remove window decorations in Ubuntu MATE?22:07
yanoswhich decor ?22:13
alkisg$ gsettings list-recursively | grep decor22:18
alkisgorg.mate.maximus undecorate false22:18
alkisgorg.mate.interface gtk-decoration-layout 'menu:minimize,maximize,close'22:18
alkisgThe first one happens when windows are maximized (all title bar hidden), the second is the existense/order of the buttons22:19
