pablo_Somebady can tell me how can I uninstall Ubuntu desktop since I've installed Mate?01:21
nomicerm01:25
nomicis on separate partition?01:25
nomicyou can delete the partition01:25
nomicgparted01:25
nomicgparted = partition management01:26
nomiclog into mate01:26
nomicsudo apt-get install gparted01:26
nomicsudo gparted01:26
nomicselect the ubuntu partition01:26
nomicdelete01:26
nomicresize the ubuntu mate partition, to use up the space01:26
nomicread about "gparted" pablo_01:26
nomicubuntu, mate, you have on separate PARTITIONs01:27
nomicgparted = the partition manager01:27
nomicyou must boot into mate to utilise/operate on your ubuntu partition -- you can only change partitions that are not mounted01:27
nomic(being used)01:27
nomicdelete the ubuntu partition .. resize the mate partition to use up the space01:28
nomichttp://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/larry/resize/big/resize-1-mouse-b.gif   <- resizing01:29
nomicyou drag the partition across to use up the unallocated space01:29
pablo_I've installed Mate over Ubuntu, and I am very satisfied01:29
nomicuhu01:29
nomicmate is very good01:29
nomicI have it on raspberry pi 3s :)01:29
pablo_But I want to keep Mate and discard Unity01:29
pablo_I don't know hoy discard my ancient Ubuntu01:30
nomici told you ^01:30
nomichow01:30
nomicuse gparted01:30
nomic= partition manager01:30
nomicdelete the ubuntu partition01:30
pablo_ButI have no different partitions01:30
nomicexpand the mate partition to use all the space01:30
nomicwhere is it then01:30
pablo_I have one partition for home and another for system01:31
nomicdoes mate/ubuntu reside on the same disk01:31
nomicif so it is in partitions01:31
pablo_Humm01:32
pablo_I can't understand01:32
nomicif ubuntu/mate are on the same hard disk drive01:33
nomicthey are in partitions01:33
pablo_Because Ubuntu Mate and Ubuntu Desktop are located on same hard disk and same partition01:33
nomicthey aren't in the same partition01:34
nomicunless you have one as a virtual machine (virtualbox)01:34
nomicthey can't be in the same partition01:35
nomicpartitions enable you to separately allocate the OS/data01:35
pablo_LOL, they are01:35
nomicwhen you boot you see a menu ubuntu/mate   = the boot manager01:37
nomicboots to partition01:37
pablo_I'm trying to send you a screenshot, but I can't01:41
pablo_But I have no differents partitions for Mate & Ubuntu01:41
pablo_My gparted doesn't show more than one system partition01:42
nomichow is ubuntu/mate running01:43
nomichow do you select either/or01:43
pablo_At login screen01:44
pablo_When system has booted yet01:44
nomicyou are only running mate01:46
nomicor ubuntu01:46
pablo_Just Mate01:47
nomicgo to #ubuntu , ask there01:51
nomicor forums01:51
nomicif you don't see it as a partition01:51
nomichow is it running01:51
nomicyou are running ubuntu / different desktops01:51
pablo_Yes, I'm running ubuntu / different desktops, ut I want to keep just Mate01:54
pablo_Well, I'm going01:58

alyanahi everyone is this a channel to ask a question?18:24
Akuliyes18:26
alyanaoh good thanks, maybe someone could answer me that. I have installed ubuntu-mate 16.04.1, and in the application where to determine how often it should look for updates and security updates, I did set to download and install security updates immediately. Now after reopening that, this option is blank and not selectable anymore. Is that a bug or intended or...?18:28
alyanaI can still set how often it should look for other updates, and when to notify. But the drop down box in the middle, about the security updates, is greyed out18:29
Akulii just remove the updater when i'm done installing ubuntu, and i update with the terminal :)18:30
alyanaoh I see, when you update with the terminal, does that include all the available updates then, no matter what type of update it is (security, application, whatever...) ?18:32
Akuliyes, everything.18:33
Akulifirst i run sudo aptitude update to refresh my package lists, then sudo aptitude upgrade to actually download and install the updates18:34
alyanaok thank you. I will do that too then. I just wondered why I could not change the settings anymore in that dropdown box. Any other option in there is working well, also in the other tabs everything looks ok. Just under "Updates" the option about the security updates is blank and grey, and if something like that appears, I just want to know why.18:38
Akulithat sounds indeed weird18:38
Akulithen again, thats why i like the terminal :) it lets me control my system more directly18:39
alyanayes, I am starting to use the terminal more and more often as well... however disappearing options like that make me nervous :) I could set it once. then I closed the application. Everything seems fine. Reopening it, gives that behaviour. I have veryfied that on two different machines now.18:40
alyanaand I did that directly after a fresh install18:40
alyanamaybe that application 'application & updates' itself needs an update :) This has not happened on any other distro I have tried out18:41
alyanaI have to logout, talk to you another time :) thanks for your help!18:47

Bill_MIHiya ouroumov ouroumov_21:39
ouroumov_lol hi Bill_MI21:39
rahtgazhey Bill_MI21:39
Bill_MIHehe... just answered you.  Thanks for asking. :-)21:39
ouroumov_^^21:39
Bill_MIHiya rahtgaz21:40
rahtgazIt's marfig from the forums here21:40
Bill_MIAh!  Didn't recognize you with your nick on. :-)21:40
rahtgazgood to see you on IRC :)21:40
Bill_MIAlways good to see the gang.21:41
ouroumov_https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mate/+bug/162225721:42
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1622257 in ubuntu-mate "Probable missing dependency "unattended-upgrades" causes bug in Software & Updates settings" [Undecided,New]21:42
Bill_MIThere ya go.  LOL, got the community update too.21:42
rahtgazlet me just confirm it on my VM and I'll add myself as affected21:43
ouroumov_If you can check yourself as affected that should automatically remove the "New" status after a while for "Confirmed"21:43
ouroumov_rahtgaz, cool thanks21:43
Bill_MII wonder if integration between those packages needs some work.  I have used unattended-upgrades on Ubuntu servers.  It's not really GUI.21:43
ouroumov_I remember a while back while checking the update details on some packages in Xenial that it was to solve a missing dependency, and nothing else.21:44
ouroumov_With some luck we can expect an SRU.21:44
ouroumov_:]21:44
Bill_MIok, since launchpad changed authentication I haven't been there much.21:45
Bill_MIBut I got there :-)21:45
ouroumov_^^21:45
Bill_MIAnd thanks for the mention.  I saw it. :-)21:46
ouroumov_For the glory :D21:46
rahtgazyup. missing dependency already. Or rather, it's not listed as a dependency21:46
Bill_MILucky hunch.21:46
rahtgazcheck 'apt-cache rdepends unattended-upgrades'21:47
Bill_MIDid you see the thread where Wimpy suggested it?  I sort of thought it was to stop notifying.21:47
ouroumov_Yeah I checked it out, it was indeed kind of an out-of-the-blue comment21:48
Bill_MIThe Software Updater trying to notify from the app tray screws compiz.21:48
Bill_MIYeah, reading more into it... maybe he was on some sort of need for the package.21:49
ouroumov_btw Wimpy is flexiondotorg on IRC.21:50
ouroumov_Oh hey the software updater is telling me of some updates to network connections21:50
rahtgazI didn't know that. I think I have him on my ignore list21:50
rahtgazkiding :p21:51
Bill_MIAh!  I knew that, too.21:51
ouroumov_Apparently they fixed the wrong icon issue, that's cool if that works21:51
Bill_MIHe's a busy guy.21:51
Bill_MII use synaptic for everything but always curious with Softare Updater also says.21:52
Bill_MII love synaptic's searchable history.21:52
ouroumov_Checkout that list of changes: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+changelog21:53
ouroumov_Maybe networking will finally be fixed in xenial21:53
Bill_MIOld Ubuntu updater used to be a *synaptic* app.  But they've gotten away from that.21:53
ouroumov_Does synaptic also logs the changes if we don't use it for the updates?21:54
Bill_MIOh geeze... don't get me started on NetworkDismanager.21:54
ouroumov_'Cause I like the sound of "searchable history"21:55
Bill_MIIt only logs updates if you use synaptic, unfortunately.21:55
rahtgazdon't understand what you guys are talking about?21:55
rahtgazchanges?21:55
Bill_MIYeah, synaptic logs all installs, upgrades, etc.21:56
Bill_MIUbuntu's old (10.04) updater added to it.  But no more21:57
Bill_MIIt's a dumb text search... it'll find all update actions with a version number or a package name.21:57
rahtgazOh, right. I understand. Yes. Even if you removed the repository, it will keep the log21:58
Bill_MIIt's not the update log, like in a terminal... but just... let me get one...21:58
Bill_MIok... the very recent weather update entry, together with everything else it di at that same "Apply"....21:59
Bill_MICommit Log for Fri Sep  9 06:26:53 201622:00
Bill_MIUpgraded the following packages:22:00
Bill_MIlibimlib2 (1.4.7-1build1) to 1.4.7-1ubuntu0.122:00
Bill_MIlibmateweather-common (1.14.1-1~xenial1.1) to 1.14.3-1~xenial1.122:00
Bill_MIlibmateweather1 (1.14.1-1~xenial1.1) to 1.14.3-1~xenial1.122:00
Bill_MIThat's all the log is.22:00
Bill_MII didn't get kicked for flooding :-)22:00
Bill_MII have every package changed from install.22:01
ouroumov_Bill_MI, do you have the reason for the changes too?22:02
rahtgazno :(22:02
Bill_MINope.  But synaptic has "Change Log"22:02
Bill_MI...many PPAs don't support that function, though.22:03
rahtgazYou mean download chenge log, I think22:03
rahtgazthat was fixed btw, Bill_MI. It just needs to trickle down into the next SRU22:03
ouroumov_Bill_MI, actually if I'm not mistaken there was a bug in the updater that meant updates from ppa22:04
ouroumov_damn rahtgaz beat me to it22:04
rahtgazyeah. We can now get the change log from PPAs. But may still take a while before we get that update22:04
Bill_MII think it's just a file on the repo someone needs to make.  Never really looked into it.22:05
Bill_MIAh, good.  Didn't know it was a bug.22:05
rahtgaznot a bug a think. it resulted form a feature request... 8 years old lol22:05
Bill_MIYou get "Coming from a source that doesn't support Change Logs"22:06
rahtgazbetter later than never, i say22:06
Bill_MIor sompin' like that.22:06
ouroumov_lol count on the bug report is 4 affected, I think v3xx marked himself too22:06
rahtgazfair enough :)22:07
Bill_MIUnfortunately, Synaptic is accumulating more bugs than the Amazon. :-(22:08
rahtgazthe good thing is that I think it will also work with loca deb packages.22:08
rahtgazlocal*22:08
Bill_MILittle things not worth the time.22:08
Bill_MIOne of the big companies... Sun?  wrote Synaptic originally.22:09
rahtgazThat's the thing that bothers me about synpatic. I'd like to be more vocal in its support. But that's hard to do when you should only use a limited set of its features22:11
Bill_MIExactly.  It's not like you can recommend it to new users.22:11
rahtgazouroumov_: I'm preparing a tutorial for the forums on Pelican as a note app. I've finished the web template for a note taker and have been only perfecting it. So, I'm already using it and have uninstalled Cherry Tree22:17
rahtgazI'll be giving credit to you on the idea :)22:17
ouroumov_rahtgaz, nice. I'll be sure to look it up.22:18
rahtgazI've just been a little busy for the past couple of weeks, so my forum presence has been limited. Not sure about the upcoming week. But I'll start my vancations the week after. So that's for sure22:18
rahtgazvacations* (hated that typo)22:19
* Bill_MI wonders if rahtgaz takes vacations in a van. :-)22:20

Bill_MII guess they still do. :-)22:21
rahtgazIt's a nice addition to my list of things to do when I retire22:21
Bill_MII usually have to work on things around the house... we all that a staycation.22:22

ouroumov_I'm in the process of recreating a memory leak bug on Fedora2422:25

ouroumov_rahtgaz, in a few years lab-grown meat is gonna become mainstream anyway22:27
rahtgazwell, if it tastes as good as the real thing, I won't complain for sure22:27
ouroumov_My guess is 20 years from now killing animals for food will be considered deviant behavior22:28
rahtgazI'll drink to that22:28
ouroumov_^^22:29
Bill_MIInteresting idea.  I just hope open-source is around at the same time.22:29
Bill_MII beg for the day the average person gasps at the thought of running software they can't examine.22:29
ouroumov_Actually that's not my idea, I extrapolated from scientific advances and a book by Peter F. Hamilton called "Fallen Dragon"22:30
ouroumov_I'm reading a decent amount of SF these days22:31
Bill_MIGreat-Granddaughter doesn't think I'm talking to anyone because she can't hear anything. :-)22:34

Bill_MIOh yeah!22:36
rahtgazouroumov_: you want this. I can't overstate the importance of this collection to any SF reader : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SF_Masterworks22:36
ouroumov_rahtgaz, oh gawd22:37
ouroumov_Hamilton is not listed on the page, but Alastair Reynolds is :D22:38
rahtgazmany are out of print. You could get them off torrent sites. But you can also buy them on amazon fromm other publishers of course. However that's considered the best collection ever devised. I'v been a collector since 200222:38
ouroumov_I only have three books from Alastair Reynolds left to read.22:38
rahtgazany hard science fiction writer is an idol on my book. And alaistar is right there on the top22:39

Bill_MIBeen a pleasure folks.  I'm off to be a wizard.  Catchya on the boards!22:41

ouroumov_blackdrake: Isn't storage space extremely limited on a rpi?23:17
blackdrakeI have a external 1 tb usb drive23:17
ouroumov_Well, if you're asking regarding the CPU power & memory, I think the recent versions of rpi are enough.23:19
blackdrakeouroumov_: thanks23:21
ouroumov_blackdrake, that said23:21
ouroumov_Usually for a good NAS you want FreeNAS or such23:22
ouroumov_Not sure if that would run on a rpi tough23:22
