arthur_dogye07:07
arthur_dogi can do that07:08
arthur_doggood ol super+t07:08
guivercopen a terminal; enter the command " ps -elf |grep dm "  (quotes are for you...)  ie. list all processes; and grep (show only) the lines with "dm" (display-manager) in them.07:08
guiverccan you confirm you see "/usr/sbin/lightdm" ... and not any other DM running07:09

guivercanswer was YEP... the /usr/sbin/lightdm line was what I wanted to you look for.07:12
arthur_dogok07:12
arthur_dogwell there you have it07:12
guiverc(i'm reading...)07:13
guivercthe machine you're using currently... is that the machine with the issue?07:15
arthur_dogyes07:15
guivercidea as work-around:   if on wake screen remains black/blank;  try the ctrl-alt-f3 (f1, f2 or any terminal), then switch back to ctrl-alt-f7 (or f8) to gui & i'm hoping gui will return-from-dead... i'm hoping this will be a workaround; it isn't a fix.. still reading for better solution07:17
arthur_dogthanks will keep in mind07:17
arthur_dogi appreciate the help07:17
guivercmost welcome: alas haven't achieved much yet.07:18

guiverci'll be around next 30 mins; will keep looking07:29
arthur_dogthanks07:29
arthur_dog i probably will be too.07:30
guivercanother suggestion i've seen online; if you can login via terminal (ctrl-alt-f2 for example); "sudo service lightdm restart"  ... but it's really harsh workaround... it will force close (kill!) all windows/anything open on gui & cause it DM (display-manager) to restart & take you to login screen.  it's a neuclear (last-resort) type option you might want to consider... only last resort...07:36
arthur_dogok07:36
guivercwild goose chase ... I think was phrase/idiom I was trying to say.07:36

arthur_dogok07:42
arthur_dogrunning xenial?07:42
guivercruns ubuntu 16.04 (yep xenial; but has XFCE, MATE, Unity DEsktops loaded)07:43
arthur_dogmaybe its a problem w/ xubuntu itself...07:43
guiverccould be... i seem to recall it also occurring with MATE too as I stated earlier.. but not with Unity (standard ubuntu)07:44
arthur_dogyeah...07:44
arthur_dogi have another problem that im just going to let loose regarding the monstrosity that is gnome disks on #ubuntu07:46
guivercgnome disks problem I'd put in #ubuntu.07:46
arthur_dogthats what im doing07:47
guiverc:)07:47
guivercanother question: what kernel are you running..  to find out type "uname -a"  (-a displays all info)    reason: a ubuntuforums.org post says it was fixed in kernel 4.4.807:50
arthur_dogok gimme a sec07:50
guivercprobably of no help... this desktop is running 4.4.0-36 and I think its up-to-date for 16.04.107:51
arthur_dog4.4.007:51
arthur_dogill run updater07:51
guivercif you type "lsb_release -a" it'll display some version info; [fyi: lsb==linux_standard_base]07:52
arthur_dogor i might rok07:53
arthur_dogwaht07:54
arthur_dogi didnt type that07:54
arthur_dogalso im 16.04.107:54
arthur_dogi might restart07:54
arthur_dogsoon07:55
guivercyep 16.04.1 is the latest! so you're up to date.07:55
arthur_dogok07:55
arthur_dogwell thats wierd07:55
arthur_dogim running updater now07:55
arthur_dogok07:57
arthur_dogwell seem ill just reboot07:57
arthur_dogbb07:57
arthur_doghi08:01
arthur_dogim back08:01
guiverchowdy again.08:01
arthur_dogjust did a reboot08:02
arthur_dogill see if it does it again.08:02
guivercother thing reading online... size of swap.space...   online says it should be ramsize+1gb at minimum; otherwise that can create issues like what you've got... what is your ramsize; and size of swapspace (ie. where it has to write the hibernate ram to)?08:03
bazhangarthur_dog, please dont crosspost this in multiple ubuntu channels08:03
guivercarthur_dog:  "lsblk"  may help in  viewing size of swap08:04
arthur_dogim back08:07
arthur_dogthe things you said didnt help much08:07
arthur_dogalso 1gb of ram08:08
guivercyou have 1GB of RAM?  what is your swap (partition) size?08:10
arthur_dogactually is there a way to see how much ram i have?08:10
guiverc"free" will show it & other info08:10
arthur_dog 1022612mb doesnt look right08:11
arthur_dogmore like disk space08:11
guivercunder the column under the word free; FIRST line only is memory; the second line shows ram + swap +...08:11
arthur_dog468040mb its saying...08:12
arthur_dogdont believe it08:12
guiverc"cat /proc/meminfo" will display sysinfo about memory...  its from where utils get info.08:13
guivercthe "MemAvailable:" line looks like it applies to my ubu16.04 machine08:14
arthur_dog645468 kB is what its saying08:14
guiverc"free -h" (-human) will show more human readable detail08:15
arthur_dogyeah i have 1 gig of ram08:15
guivercwhat is your swapsize; "lsblk" or "free -h" should also show it08:16
arthur_dogsaying 1 gb08:16
guivercwhen you hibernate... it has to save your RAM to disk; it saves it by default in SWAP... meaning it needs 1GB of SWAP free to hibernate correctly... if you've used any swap before you tell it to hibernate; you'll have <1GB available to write your ram into it.08:17
guivercthis COULD be your problem.   my memory knowledge isn't enough to be 100% certain; but is very likely the problem you have.08:18
arthur_dogwell how do i fix it08:18
guivercswapsize should be > ram size08:18
guivercthinking... (reading my free)08:18
guivercan idea... before you next hibernate; you could try "sudo swapoff -a"  to turn off all swap; meaning it'll be unused by system, and available for hibernate...   then try & hibernate, restore & see if screen returns to being usable after restore...08:21
arthur_dogok08:22
arthur_doghold in a sec08:22
guivercthe command "sudo swapon" will turn swap on again... with swapoff; it won't be able to write memory to swap to give it more ram; meaning machine will be slower08:22
guivercbut it may help your issue (if i'm correct and its the issue)08:22
arthur_dogwell im going to try it.08:23
guivercto make swap larger... if you have some unused space on your HDD; I can provide some clues08:23
arthur_dogshoot08:23
guivercif you don't have HDD space; you may need to shrink a partition (will take time..)08:23
arthur_doglet me check08:23
arthur_dogall partitioned08:24
guivercHDD space = I mean unallocated space; not as in allocated but currently not storing any files or data... yep normally we allocate all space on machines we use..08:24
arthur_dogthats what i was saying08:25
guiverci've gotta go (been over 30 mins)... but SWAP is easiest partition to change; just delete & create a new partition calling it SWAP and it'll likely get used.08:25
arthur_dogok thanks. bb08:25
guiverc?08:26
guivercto change partition size; 1: BACKUP DATA in case anything goes wrong.08:26
guiverc2:  make another backup; incase of problem with step 1.08:26
arthur_dogok08:26
arthur_doggo on08:27
guiverc3: boot a live image; eg. ubuntu16 or any *nix live distro; use it to shrink a partition; next to the 'swap'; delete swap partition then re-create using the old & freed space..08:27
guivercfor my system, file /etc/fstab (file system table) contains the following08:27
guiverc#UUID=4f59600e-1f6b-4e3a-a466-941a2168e327 none            swap    sw              0       008:27
guiverc(first line with SWAP; # @ start means its ignored anyway; pre-a change)08:28
guiverc"/dev/mapper/cryptswap1 none swap sw 0 0"  is next "swap" line... this means my swap is encrypted...08:29
guivercif you're /etc/fstab makes mention of a UUID partition by label/name/"/dev/sda?" (UUID=) you need to change to reflect new position... many files won't need change at all.08:30
arthur_dogok08:30
guivercdo you understand roughly ... i'm hoping you follow the idea of what i'm saying, rather than exactly as my example may not match your system.08:31
guiverckey is to BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP.08:31
arthur_dogdo i use dd to do the partitioning08:31
guiverci'm on g+ if you want to ask me later; i've gotta go.  dd=datadump (as I remember it) .. fdisk is for partitioning; but i'd do it in GUI as easier.08:32
arthur_dogok08:32
arthur_dogsee you later08:32
guiverci just gotta go sorry.... don't follow my idea until you understand & have a clear id as to what you're doing... i'm rushing due time.08:32
arthur_dogok08:33
arthur_dogwell thanks bye08:33
guivercyou can ask others... also ask if my "cause" actually fits!  (ie. your SWAP isn't large enough) .. its the best i've come up with.08:33
arthur_dogok08:33
arthur_dogwill ask08:33
guivercincreasing swap size is easy... but easier for me to do, than describe how I'd do it.08:34
arthur_dogthanks08:34
arthur_dogreally appreciate it08:34
arthur_dogsee you08:34
guivercmost welcome; sorry gotta go now... see you another day!  (I'm Chris)08:35

ikoniaarthur_dog: right - lets clarify12:41
ikoniastate your version and problem clearly12:41
cfhowlettxfburn is the default app in xubuntu.  use that.12:41
ikoniano other noise12:42
arthur_dogWhat?12:42

arthur_dogI get this error "Error synchronizing after initial wipe: Timed out waiting for object (udisks-error-quark, 0)" when I try to format a USB pendrive.12:43
ikoniaarthur_dog: is this ubuntu or xubuntu to clarify12:44
arthur_dogxubuntu12:44
ikoniaarthur_dog: ok - how are you "wiping" it12:44
arthur_dogdeleting each partition and then new partition12:44
ikoniaright, so thats not wiping it, thats destorying partitions12:45
ikoniaso the first thing to make sure of, is that the pen drive hasn't automounted12:45
ikoniamake sure none of the partitions are mounted12:45
arthur_dogive done that already12:45
arthur_dogthats all good12:45
ikoniaso if you delete one partiton (nothing more) and apply, what happens12:46
arthur_dogthat error from before12:46
ikoniaso just deleting, not re-creating or trying to put a file system on it12:46
arthur_doglook12:46
ikoniajust deleting one partition, and clicking apply you get that error12:46
arthur_dogsoory typo12:46
arthur_dogyes thats correct12:47
ikoniaok, eject the usb pen and put it back in and let it rescan it12:47
ikoniado you see the partition you deleted before12:47
arthur_dogok12:47
arthur_dogthe partition is still there12:47
ikonia(note eject, not just pull out)12:47
ikoniaarthur_dog: ok, is it a primary or extended partition you are deleting12:48
arthur_dogprimary12:48
ikonia(how many partitions are on it)12:48
arthur_dog312:48
ikoniaso if you now delete that partition and click apply, what happens12:48

knobHey guys... looking for a way to "move" a window to another monitor.  I have two monitors, wondering if I can create a shortcut to move the window to the "other" monitor.16:52
knobI saw this: https://makandracards.com/makandra/12447-how-to-move-a-window-to-the-next-monitor-on-xfce-xubuntu16:52
knobWondering if you know of a better way?16:52
xlinuxusrDoes anybody inhere have a hanging console inhere after several encounters with the mouse cursor getting lost when coming out of screenlock which can be bypassed by switching to vt1 and back to vt7, doing that for a few times hangs al of my vt's16:55
xlinuxusrow i do have to mention that vt7 and deskto remain fully functional16:57
knobxlinuxusr, I believe that bug still hasn't been solved...17:02
knobOddly enough, in my laptop, it happens.  vt1-->vt7 switch pops the cursor back.     Yet, in my desktop (dual monitor), the cursor does disappear.  Yet moving it to one monitor, and back to the original "main" monitor, re-appears the cursor.17:03
xlinuxusrknob, thx for responding. if you refer to the cursor bug yes i know it is registered but the console hangings consurn me more actualy17:04
knobAh... ok ok.   I can't be of much help there! Sorry :)17:04
xlinuxusrthats oke, it is a very vage issue which i have never seen in my 20+ years use of linux17:08
knob20+ years!  I envy you!!   I started about 2-3 years ago... and wouldn't go back every.17:08

xlinuxusroke, that sounds like fun17:08
xlinuxusryeah welk you know i don't like to breg about it to much but i started in the very early days the dawn of linux so to speak.. :-)17:09
xlinuxusri thaught best ask here first before i start to rip kernels appart again.. :P17:11
xlinuxusroh well i guess i don't have a lot of options left then....17:14
xlinuxusrknob thx for trying to help, keep at it and you will learn a lot if you devote your time and efford, god knows when i was where you are now i thaught i was never gonna make it,  CHEERS MAN!  :-)17:18
