RavinduLHi! Where can I find the default key bindings for Ctrl + Super + Left and Right within Compiz?00:09
en1gmai originally has this 40GB ssd hooked up to my motherboards sata port to get ubuntu desktop 16.10 x64 installed. since then i moved the drive to a usb to sata adapter and i did have ubuntu updates disabled00:09
RavinduLDefaults for Ctrl + Super + Up and Down are within General Options.00:10
en1gmai accidently did sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade and it did an upgrade except i got warning about grub not being installed correctly00:10

jesuslovesyouthiI'm trying to select / install QT Creator on Ubuntu 14.04 but their site is confusing. Does anyone have more familiarity with it? I only ask bc one of the options in a required set of staps to get the dl is to use for open source software development, which is fine, but I don't know if there's more than one version of the ide and if my answers there will effect the outcome / product I get.00:14
glitchden1gma, are you on a raid?00:14
glitchden1gma,  sry just getting all turned around in what you actually want to do00:15
en1gmai have soft-raid hooked up and an extra 240GB alone. i then have this 40GB external with usb to sata adapter that ubuntu is on00:16
en1gmahttp://pastebin.ca/3720790  and http://pastebin.ca/372078400:16
lordcirthen1gma, you need grub on the harddrive which is supposed to be bootable, and usually you'll want it on the other raid drive as well, so if a drive fails it will boot without a liveusb.00:18
lordcirthAssuming your root/ boot is raided00:18
glitchden1gma, this is above my pay grade, sry..00:19
en1gmai try not to let ubuntu ever touch my soft-raid with windows.00:19
en1gmai install them completly seperate. by that i mean when i installed windows only the 3 120GB drives were hooked up. when i installed ubuntu only the 1 40GB ssd was hooked up00:20
en1gmai dont want them to know about eachother at all00:20

kirkwingI don't know wtf this is - it oppened by mistake on my raspberry pi...00:24
en1gmaduring the upgrade it said a warning about how i might need to run grub again or something like that00:24
lordcirthen1gma, those Windows drives show they have partition tables.  So grub should have installed itself normally and not overwritten anything important.00:24
siva_machinakirkwing, by this you mean irc?00:24
lordcirthAt worst it overwrote bootmgr and you'll have to fix it.00:24
kirkwingThe whole application xD00:25
TheNH813Audio dead after the last update. Where should I start troubleshooting?00:25
TheNH813Pulse and ALSA are running and all devices hsow up.00:25
lordcirthkirkwing, this chat?  this is IRC.  Specifically, the #ubuntu support channel.00:25
TheNH813I first noticed something was wrong when there was no sound effect when changing volume.00:26
TheNH813The correct output device is selected, and it appears to be working. Any application trying to output audio, freezes as if it's not able to write any audio to the buffer.00:26
en1gmalordcirth thank goodness00:27
en1gmais there a grub command i can try to install to the usb to sata drive on /dev/sda00:27
lordcirthen1gma, literally grub-install /dev/sda00:27
TheNH813You mean install grub?00:28
TheNH813Yeah what he said.00:28
jesuslovesyouthidoes anyone know the best route to install the latest version of QT Creator on ubuntu 14.04?00:28
TheNH813Yes, I think00:28
TheNH813LEt me get the info00:28
jesuslovesyouthiI'm on thier website and dl the .run file they pawn off on you - but don't know what to do with a .run file (never seen one).00:29
TheNH813You execute it. IT's a self extracting shell script00:29
TheNH813chmod a+x <file>00:30
lordcirthjesuslovesyouthi, isn't it in 14.04 repos?00:30
lordcirthIt's in 16.0400:30
TheNH813Then run it: ./something.run00:30

lowinWhere can I download ubuntu for phone? I can't see any download link or a source location on the website.00:31
en1gmalordcirth http://pastebin.ca/372079500:31
jesuslovesyouthilordcirth: Yes but - even if the versioning is different for the ubuntu packages (don't know if it is or not) I highly highly doubt it's the latest version. Plus, I think I'd feel more satisfied getting something like this straight from the source. Just, in this case, they use some odd way of installing that I've never seen and don't know how to do.00:31
en1gmanope its not :(00:31
TheNH813lowin: That's quite hard to do, if you mean install it to a phone.00:32
Bashing-omen1gma: As you run ubuntu as stand alone, and DO NOT want ubuntu aware of Windows raid . Then why not disable 30_os-prober so that grub will not hunt ?00:32
lowinTheNH813, hmm, why though? Wasn't it made to run on phones?00:32
lowinI'm just curious to try it00:32
TheNH813lowin: Specific hardware, yes. Let me give you a link to supported chipsets.00:32
lordcirthjesuslovesyouthi, a .run file is just an executable that unpacks itself and installs.  However, you won't be able to remove it easily, unlike packages.  Package versioning should be the same, take a look.00:33
en1gmaBashing-om never used to have a problem with either windows or linux os as long as i installed them completely seperate with no drives attached.00:33
en1gmai dont mind after i have booted into linux that it (sees) the soft-raid i just dont want it altering the bootloader00:33

TheNH813lowin: Your device may be supported. If it's not supported things like WiFi and the Touchscreen may not work, or it might not boot.00:36
jesuslovesyouthiMaybe it is worth it00:36
zartarrhi guys have a european keyboard and want to remap some keys00:36
zartarrhow would i go about doing this?00:36
Bashing-omen1gma: Mind ya, as we are going to install grub dis-regaeding the Windows array . You can then boot ubuntu by selecting in bios to boot the ubuntu drive when 30_os-prober is disabled .00:36
lordcirthjesuslovesyouthi, depends on the software.00:36
TheNH813lowin: If you choose to experiment, I'd make a backup of the ROM currently on your phone so you can restore if it goes wrong.00:36
RLShiftyDoggitzartarr i believe its editing locales00:36
en1gmaBashing-om thats already how i boot now00:37

lowinI already tried gentoo on my Chinese tablet once. It was glorious. except I couldn't get X to display colors correctly00:38
Bashing-omen1gma: pastebim ' sudo fdisk -lu ' we identify the ubuntu drive and install grub to the MBR of that drive , and disable 30_os-prober. No more problems then with updating grub messing up .00:39
RLShiftyDoggitlast time i set locales was when i was running arch00:39
lowinand I didn't have the source to linux on that.. So I guess it may be a little easier with a nexus00:39
JohnnyLwhat's the secret to simply add a website to these damn search engines. I got google.com but it's a big mystery otherwise.00:39

jesuslovesyouthiIf the versioning between ubuntu packaging and upstream for qt creator is the same, then the ubuntu version in software center is 3.0.1-0ubuntu4 . The current upstream version is 5.7 I believe (two major revisions and a shitload of other stuff later). So I'm really not seeing any easy to follow instruction on installing it via the vendor site or whether there is a 3rd party repo avialable?00:41

lordcirthjesuslovesyouthi, "<TheNH813> You execute it. IT's a self extracting shell script" " chmod a+x <file>"00:47
Bashing-omen1gma: Ypu are mixing EFI/MBR booting .. looks like booting Windows in EFI mode, and ubuntu as MBR . One can do this but the UEFI will not see ubuntu to boot it .00:47
en1gmayea i had to do windows 10 that way for some reason with that soft-raid and also i had problems with linux trying to install in uefi mode so dropped it down to secure os = no or off00:48
en1gmaits been working great for the last few months00:49
en1gmajust select windows or ubuntu in bios00:49
TheNH813jesuslovesyouthi: Ok, mark the .run file as executable. Either type the command "chmod a+x file_name_here.run" or go right click properties on the file and then go to permissions and make sure executable is checked00:49
TheNH813jesuslovesyouthi: Then, using the terminal, type the path of the .run file, adding a . before the slash. Like ./filenamehere.run00:50
TheNH813If it says it needs to be run as root, use the same command, and type sudo before it, like sudo ./filenamehere.run00:51
TheNH813But if I remember correctly it will give a popup asking for admin password00:51
Bashing-omen1gma: And it will continue to boot just fine, so long when booting ubuntu in the forware you choose to boot the ubuntu drive . To install grub to that 1st hard drive ' sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ; sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda ' .00:52

en1gmai would prefer it not to show up the windows drive but so far it always works.01:19

zitherI have an old dos program witch uses paralel port to communicate some external hardware. Originally it used a MosChip PCI card to do this. I migrating this stuff to Ubuntu 16.04 with dosemu. My problem is: the old DOS program has fixed (non standard) i/o addresses to the paralell port, so it cant't open the port.01:22
zitherIs there any way to change the i/o ports in linux, or "redirect" direct port access in dosemu?01:23
Bashing-omsudormrf: Yeah go ahead now ' sudo update-grub ' . No I do not expect that option to be usable in the firmware boot menu . I do expect that choosing to boot the 1st hard drive to boot directly to ubuntu .01:23

th0rzartarr, the ip, username  and password are all from the synology drive. The linuxuser is the username on your linux computer04:18
anoorang indonesia mana suaranya????04:19
th0rano, not here please04:19
zartarrya not working04:20
th0rzartarr, that is the command I use to mount about 8 different nfs drives to my desktop so I know it should work.04:20
zartarrya don't worry about it bro04:20
zartarrthat makes me feel soo dumb04:20
zartarrwhats the xx.yy/sharename04:20
zartarr?04:20
th0rzartarr, 192.168.xx.yy is the ip address of the synology drive, and sharename is the name you gave the share in that admin program (step 4 or thereabouts)04:21
ano@th0r yes, I'm sorry04:21
zartarryou mean the host name?04:21
zartarror the share drive04:22
th0rzartarr, Go to the NFS Permissions tab. Here you can find the mount path of the shared folder, which follows the format / [volume name] / [shared folder name ].04:22
zartarrlike /Volume1/blahblah04:22
th0rzartarr, yeah...Volume1/whatever04:22
zartarrya so i got that04:22
zartarrand the ip address04:22
zartarris of the synology04:22
th0rzartarr, right04:22
evanvarvellyou want to boot me now of later?04:22

th0rzartarr, and it does start with a double slash "//"04:23
evanvarvellubuntu-offtopic has 137 people only in its room04:23
th0rzartarr, that means your mount folder is a different path. Open the synology folder on your desktop and see what the full path is04:24
zartarr/home/user/Desktop04:24
th0rzartarr, then the folder should be /home/user/Desktop/synology...make sure there are no typos04:25
zartarrhow do i delete/eject these04:25
zartarri have 2 synologies on my desktop now04:25
zartarrbecause of whatever commands i have running before04:25
zartarri want to get rid of them and just create new folder04:25
th0rzartarr, the mount command will show you what is mounted. Just unmount them 'sudo umount /home/user/Desktop/synology'04:26

dustedah, the interface05:50
orlock0.0.0:1337 or 127.0.0.1:133705:50
dustedit answers if I scan it from the lan05:51
th0rzartarr, that sure looks like it should work. that error is the -o stuff. If you take out just one, like th epassword...do you still get that error?05:51
orlockafter that, look at your ufw/iptables settings - or just flush them/stop ufw05:51
dustedand netstat tells me 0.0.0.0:133705:51
orlockdusted: Ahh, ok05:51
orlockAnd i assume the route is there?05:51
dustedyes, and if I change the route to point to another machine, it works as expected from that05:51
orlockrun this: tcpdump -nni any src or dst port 133705:52
dustedgood idea05:52
orlockby route, you mean port forward for the internet:1337 to go to your internal host?05:52
zartarrthen it says05:52
zartarraccess denied by server while mount 192.05:52
zartarrwhen i take out the password05:52
zartarrshould i take out the -o05:52
dustedorlock, I got something, 07:52:33.002302 IP 208.64.252.230.47130 > 192.168.1.31.1337: Flags [S], seq 3349473438, win 5840, options [mss 1460,sackOK,TS val 2156829807 ecr 0,nop,wscale 8], length 005:53
dustedso, the route seems ok05:53
orlockyeah so you have your inbound syn05:53
th0rzartarr, the -o says that what follows is options....everything up to the next space is options, separated by commas....or that is what it should be <smile>05:53
orlockis there anything going back the other way?05:53
dustedorlock, only that 1 packet recieved, I will run the same on the other machine, to compare outputs05:54
dustedthe one where the scan returns05:54
orlockyou should see another packet except its 192.168.1.31.1337 > 208.64.252.230.4713005:54
th0rzartarr, you are getting access denied because the user/password aren't being supplied. But when you supply them it doesn't like how you are doing it05:54
zartarris the other way u- user, p- password ?05:55
th0rzartarr, no....that other irc member who helped out earlier used the same syntax so I am pretty sure it is right05:56
dustedorlock, on the machine where it works, 6 packets are captured05:56
guiverczartarr & th0r:  looking I note "info nfs" doesn't reveal options for user=,password= for NFS ... my own NFS does it another way.. here you have to match the way synology does it (which I don't know)   i'm assuming you've tried without -o user..,password...   apology if i'm missing prior stuff again....05:56
th0rzartarr, that last command sure looks like it should work...I am looking it over closely and see no issues05:57
orlockdusted: and you can see the bidirectional conversation, correct?05:57
dustedyes05:57
orlockhmm05:57
orlockclear your firewall rules05:57
dustedufw is disabled05:57
th0rguiverc, we are just discussing that. If we take it all out then he gets access denied.05:57
orlockand the default actions are accept, not drop?05:57
dustedactually, I do not know, but if it was drop, I guess it wouldn't work from local machines ?05:58
orlockhmm yes you are likely right05:58
th0rguiverc, but it doesn't like when he includes them. So how do we pass the credentials to the synology drive is the question05:58
dustedfrom my workstation, I can connect fine to it, I'm using it via ssh05:58
th0rzartarr, take out the -o user/pass stuff and lets work from there05:58
orlockdusted: Unsure, sounds like you have a fun problem05:59
guivercth0r: sorry. my successful experience with NFS is with *nix servers; i hate xx brand NAS devices (that each interpret rules differently)05:59
dustedorlock, indeed :D05:59

zartarrFor many more details, say  man 8 mount .05:59
zartarrand a bunch of other stuff up above06:00
zartarrthat is to long to copy paste06:00
th0rzartarr, I am looking at that guide again...specifically this comment at the end.....Can't mount the shared folder? The user account you enter here must have access privileges for the shared folder that you wish to map.06:01
orlockdusted: I'm not sure - can you pastebin iptables -L -n ?06:02
th0rzartarr, but I cannot see where the user account info was entered.06:02
zartarrthat stuff is done in different prompts when setting up the synology06:02
zartarrthe user pass has access06:02
dustedorlock, yes, moment please06:02
zartarrive connected to this drive via windows and mac with the synology software before06:02
zartarrno issues06:02
th0rzartarr, it is just a matter of figuring out exactly what the synology wants...and how to get it there. At least we are talking to the drive now (I think)06:03
dustedorlock, http://nopaste.linux-dev.org/?111995906:03
orlockyeah all good06:04
orlockhmm06:04
orlockdusted: i'd do a tcpdump -bi any src or dst port not 2206:04
orlockor whatever it is so you dont sniff your own ssh traffic06:04

zartarrwhich maps it...06:06
zartarrand bam06:06
guivercgrrrr...  but implies samba/cifs to me more than nfs.06:06
th0rzartarr, so we need to get that username and password to it somehow06:06
zartarrbut Synology says to connect to linux use NFS06:06
zartarrand that site has the instructions06:06
zartarrim using the exact username and pass06:06
zartarri even created another admin to try diff username and pass which i shouldnt have to do to no avail06:06
dustedorlock, yeah, only getting the one packet, unless I nc from a local machine, then I get several (and it works)06:07
orlockAnd your client nc wont think that it's got a socket without more packets06:07
orlockhmm.. grasping at straws, but you could try an strace of the listening nc06:08
dustednope, and I can type messages through and such.. when routing to another machine (I tried both my workstation and my other server), the online port scanner exits at once, reporting the port available06:08
dustedand the listening nc exits06:08
dustedbut on this particular machine, nc stays open, and the portscanner times out06:09
dusted(the online portscanner, that is)06:09
orlockDoes it work for something thats not netcat?06:09
dustedzenmap from my workstation tells me the port is open06:09
th0rzartarr, reading the man pages...give me a sec06:10
dustedorlock, nope, the reason I went to nc was that nginx seemed to work fine from my workstation, so when I switched the route from my old http server to this new one, I assumed stuff worked.. then I tried hydemyas* to check external connectivity, and became rather surprised that it didn't06:10
dustedI'm going to try something wild here, I'll reboot the box.. I was an it supporter once.. so I have superstitions06:11
th0rzartarr, I see no way to send the username password for an nfs mount...nothing in the man pages about it06:13
dustedorlock, the reboot worked, and I will never know why :(06:14

th0rzartarr, ok...step by step. Take out all the -o stuff, and take out the -t nfs as well, then try that command06:19
th0rzartarr, it should just be 'sudo mount ip:Voluem1/synology /home/user/Desktop/synology'06:20

th0roops guiverc https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/File_Sharing/How_to_access_files_on_Synology_NAS_within_the_local_network_NFS#t406:23
th0rguiverc, if I am not totally confused at this point...when he tries to mount this without the user/password he gets access denied, which would indicate we need somehow to pass credentials06:28
th0rguiverc, I thought in the config we told the drive to allow the whole network...but it doesn't seem to work that way06:29
guivercth0r: i suspect credentials are set on Synology box; not the ubuntu client.06:29
th0rguiverc, yeah...that is what I thought. Somewhere we are missing something in the configs06:30
guivercth0r:  by default NFS is unix-user-id only... trust assumed; security done elsewhere.. looking at page to me implies the setup on synology device isn't correct... not the stuff you've been trying.06:30
guivercth0r: you've covered much of this when I wasn't paying attention; ie. squash (hide system dirs etc) etc..06:32

th0rguiverc, the only place in that guide I see to give/refuse permissions is where you define the share permissions. We set it to allow the entire network (192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0)06:32

zartarrthe desktop is as evil as the terminal07:10
zartarrth0r ... th0r wake up07:11
zartarrit works07:11
th0rzartarr, great! we all got a little smarter this evening!07:11
zartarror did you rofl07:11
zartarrsoo happy right now07:12
zartarrwill i have to enter this command every bootup07:12
zartarror is this going to be automatic now?07:12
th0rzartarr, a caveat for you....I initially set up my cifs drives to mount in fstab at boot. but I found if the server was offline for some reason the desktop would freeze and not boot.07:13
th0rzartarr, so I created a little one line bash script to mount my drives...it is easy...if you are ready to make notes07:13
zartarrok cool07:13
guiverczartarr:  the command you entered is for this time only; but you can make permanent by adding a line in /etc/fstab (file systems table) as per th0r's advice.  if device is OFF, it'll be slow to boot as it waits for device for some time,, you can have it mount when you tell it.. there are many options.07:14
th0rzartarr, first line of a bash script is always '#!/bin/sh' without the quotes07:14
zartarryou know thats interesting this slow to boot or freezing happens on the mac tooo...07:14
zartarrand then i gotta reconnect or restart and stuff07:14
zartarrinteresting07:14
th0rzartarr, then the second line is the command you just entered07:14
nod0n7zs error about now space left on device is not so easy to understand: "7z ERROR: E_FAIL"07:15
zartarr sudo mount -t cifs -o user=th0r,password=zartarr //192.168.1.XXX/Zartarr /home/user/zartarr07:15
zartarrthat is the god-mode line of wording that worked th0r07:16
th0rzartarr, disappointingly close to the very first command line I sent you <smile>07:16
zartarryou know i have a feeling07:16
zartarrit was just all the desktop to begin with07:17
zartarrbut probably not, its a combination of everything07:17
th0rzartarr, not quite...we had the volume/share wrong07:17

zartarrya that to07:17

zartarrso what do you suggest i do to make this auto07:20
=== matt_ is now known as Guest72890

guiverczartarr:  th0r gave his advice... you were too happy to really notice..07:20
=== Guest72890 is now known as matt_
th0rzartarr, create a bash script, link it to /usr/local/bin, and all you will need to do is type the name of the script07:20
hateballth0r, zartarr you may consider using autofs to deal with the "not online at boot" issues and such07:20
hateballthen it will be mounted when you try accessing it instead07:21
th0rzartarr, I have three servers in the house...so to mount them I just type 'mNimbus' or mGimp or mAlex07:21
guiverczartarr:  I too mount via bash_script my SAMBA/cifs devices (aids speedy bootup), my NFS drives all automount as the slower boot is minimal with NFS when devices aren't on/up.07:21
zartarrok thats foreign to me07:22
zartarr#!/bin/sh07:22
zartarrand then the line we used07:22
zartarrwhats a bash script07:22
zartarrwhere do i create it07:22
zartarrhow do i create it07:22
zartarrhow do i link it07:22
zartarrif i see th0r left the room, i understand07:22
zartarr;)07:22
th0rzartarr, yup...those two lines make up a bash script. You create it with any text editor07:22
ali_wasuuuuuup07:23
zartarrok07:23
zartarri put those 2 lines in a text editor07:23
zartarrso i have to save it as the name i want to execute it?07:23
th0rzartarr, name it what you want....mZartarr for instance. Then link it into the path with 'ln -s /home/user/mZartarr /usr/local/bin/Zartarr'07:23
zartarrwhat does link it into the path mean?07:24
zartarrits asking where to save it07:24
th0rzartarr, save it to home/user07:25
guiverczartarr:  sudo ln -s /home/user/mZarrtarr /usr/local/bin/mZarrtarr   (first is real file; second is path to link; any files in /usr/local/bin are runnable to all users)07:25
zartarri just see like desktop/documents/downloads/music etc07:25
zartarrno user07:26
zartarrjust save it here then?07:26
zartarrthis is where i saved the zartarr folder07:26
guiverc"user" being your name/username; guiverc for me.07:26
zartarrohh ok07:26
th0rzartarr, also you need to make it executable...chmod a+x /home/user/mZartarr (or whatever you called it)07:27
zartarrok so i saved it under home/user07:27
zartarrso now do this chmod thing in terminal right07:27
th0rzartarr right07:28
zartarrok done07:28
zartarrwhat after chmod?07:28
th0rzartarr, then link it to /usr/local/bin07:28

zartarrconfused about one thing07:30
zartarrin the sudo ln -s07:30

zartarrwhy did we do zarrtarr07:30
zartarrinstead of zartarr07:30
zartarri have a feeling that was just typo07:31
zartarrso i fixed it07:31
zartarrhow do i delete whatever i created accidently07:31
th0rzartarr, it should have been whatever your filename is.... guiverc typed it differently than I did07:31
zartarrkk07:31
guiverczartarr:  no reason.. it's typo on our behalf... use "rm filename" to delete "filename" ... follow th0r's advice not me.07:32
th0rzartarr, it was a type in the ln command...so delete the old link (sudo rm /usr/local/bin/mZarrtarr) and then do the ln with the right info07:32

lkeijserhi, I have mirrored an entire ubuntu repository using debmirror. I want to delete some packages from it and replace them with older versions. I have removed all Packages* and Release* files from the structure and I'm now generating new ones after I signed every package with my own gpg key. Is this a correct procedure?08:06
Ben64lkeijser: sounds like a bad solution to a problem08:07
lkeijserBen64, indeed, but I'm totally unfamiliar with ubuntu repositories and running out of time :/08:07
Ben64lkeijser: why don't you explain what your goal is08:07
lkeijserok08:07
lkeijserI need to update all my servers using the normal repository, but in it there's a version of mysql that I don't want to update to. Instead I have downloaded an older version of MySQL (still newer than what I have installed now) and I want to update to that specific version08:08
Ben64why an older version of mysql08:09
lkeijserBen64, because "the developers tested against that version"08:10
lkeijserafter almost 3 days of trying to explain that the newer version is just as good, if better, I gave up08:10
k1l_lkeijser: you can force a specific version from the repos with apt. but since mysql is heavily dependend on security updates you will need to have the latest version to make sure you are patched with security updates08:10
lkeijserk1l_, that's what I tried to explain to various managers/developers/projectleaders08:11
Ben64yeah, you can pin the package, doesn't involve making your own repositories. doesn't solve the issue of security though08:11
k1l_lkeijser: that is only the first one i find on ubuntu.com/usn : http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-3078-1/08:11
lkeijserk1l_, yep, I know it08:12
lkeijsertrust me, 3 days of discussing this ... I really gave up on these people08:12

ubuntivity    the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks23:09
ubuntivity    for (,msdos5)/boot/grub on this drive."23:09
ubuntivitywhy does it look for (,msdos5) rather than (,msdos1) ??23:09
craigifygreetings.  I have a software package that looks for -lsystemd-daemon but it doesn't seem to resolve on Ubuntu 16.04.  libsystemd0 and libsystemd-dev are installed, and I'm kind of stuck at the moment.23:10
Jordan_Uubuntivity: Please pastebin the output of "cat /proc/mounts". (using http://pastebin.ubuntu.com ).23:10

me-0kjIAG2lin9So I ren this command I got from : http://askubuntu.com/questions/401581/bash-one-liner-to-delete-only-oldp-kernels    to delet old kernels and now my networking is borked!      I can not connect via ethernet cable. uname -r lists 3.13.0.96-generic as its only line of output and ls /boot shows the same in it's contents. sudo ifconfig lists only lo (no eth0 and no wlan0). Whether I run sudo ifconfig eth0up or I run sudo ifconf23:13
me-0kjIAG2lin9Is there anyhone would could help?23:14
PotatoBoime-0kjIAG2lin9 don't know a lot about networking23:14
me-0kjIAG2lin9That computer is the only good computer in the house - this one I'm typing to you on is a complete pos (I need that other computer working)23:15
PotatoBoime-0kjIAG2lin9 i would help you right now but i have to go rn23:15
PotatoBoisee you all23:15
naccme-0kjIAG2lin9: um, that one-liner seems ... bad23:16
ubuntivityJordan_U: what do you suggest??23:16
nacci mean not ideal, at least23:16
devanok im at a loss to how to get journalctl to a log.txt23:17
Jordan_Udevan: journalctl > /tmp/log.txt23:17
me-0kjIAG2lin9nacc: yeah. dunno what to do no tho23:17
devanJordan_U, omg thanks!23:17
* ubuntivity stares at the wall, with hope!23:18
me-0kjIAG2lin9I'm wondering if upbgrading from a burned dvd (I'm on 14.04 now) to the latest version would somehow pull in whatever is missing or broken and leave me with a nice useable system - but would I lose personal data in the process?23:19
OerHekssystemd-analyze plot > filename.svg23:19
Jordan_Uubuntivity: Please pastebin the complete output of "sudo grub-install --debug /dev/sda" (you can do so automatically by making sure pastebinit is installed and running "sudo grub-install --debug /dev/sda 2>&1 | pastebinit").23:19

naccme-0kjIAG2lin9: why did you need to delete old kernels by hand? you really shouldn't run anything as root that you don't fully undestand and  know how to undo, ideally23:20
naccme-0kjIAG2lin9: it's hard to know what exactly you removed from what you've described so far23:20
ubuntivityJordan_U: http://paste.ubuntu.com/23218016/23:21
* ubuntivity feels grateful for the tip about pastebinit23:21
naccme-0kjIAG2lin9: you may want to simply reinstall, but someone maybe to help you recover your current system. Depending your partitioning choices, you may be ableto keep your personal data on reinstall23:21
devantoo massive for pastebin23:21
bob23is there a way to bring up the vim options in vim23:22
bob23?23:22
Jordan_Uubuntivity: grub-install is installing for UEFI, not BIOS. Which is interesting, since it should only be doing that if you are currently booted via UEFI.23:22
me-0kjIAG2lin9nacc: I think I'm going to try that and hope for the best ( a reinstall ). thax23:22
ubuntivityJordan_U: How can I determine the way I'm booted via??23:23
ubuntivityJordan_U: does that have to do with AHCI vs. Compatible modes for S-ATA?23:24
Jordan_Uubuntivity: It might actually just be because you're using an ancient Ubuntu with an ancient grub. My guess is that you have grub-efi installed but not grub-pc. Please pastebin the output of "dpkg -l | grep grub".23:24
Jordan_Uubuntivity: No.23:24
adamsilverHi guys - /root/.bashrc is not being sourced, why?23:25
Jordan_Uadamsilver: You shouldn't be logging in as root, and that would be the only time that /root/.bashrc should be sourced.23:25
devanforget it... see you guys later23:25
ubuntivityJordan_U: it is true that grub-efi is installed!23:26
SonikkuAmericaadamsilver: I'd suggest you [ cp /etc/skel/.bashrc ~/.bashrc && source ~/.bashrc ] as yourself if you're looking to reset your .bashrc to defaults23:26
ubuntivityJordan_U: http://paste.ubuntu.com/23218028/23:27
adamsilverJordan_U / SonikkuAmerica: I want to remain logged in as root.23:27
ubuntivityJordan_U: what if I'm actually booted via UEFI? How can I ever know?23:27
Jordan_Uubuntivity: sudo apt-get install grub-pc # Which might also remove grub-efi, which would be good.23:27
SonikkuAmericaadamsilver: In Ubuntu, there's absolutely no reason to ever log in as root23:28
SonikkuAmerica!root | adamsilver23:28
ubottuadamsilver: Do not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo23:28
Jordan_Uubuntivity: You're not, since you don't even have an EFI System Partition, but you could check by running "[ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo UEFI || echo BIOS" .23:28
ubuntivityJordan_U: your intelligent one-liner outputs BIOS23:29
adamsilverSonikkuAmerica: I am not logged in as root for Ubuntu itself. I am using paramiko.org to build the server via Python code. I can't edit root owned files via Paramiko if I am not connected as root (sudo doesn't work with their SFTP client)23:29
ubuntivityJordan_U: I'm going to install grub-pc and see. Are there any possible problems?23:30
SonikkuAmericaadamsilver: That's an interesting use case you have there... maybe #ubuntu-server might help23:30
ubuntivityJordan_U: and would I need to run grub-install and update-grub again after installation?23:31
FioneHello.23:32
Jordan_Uubuntivity: It's always possible for there to be other problems, but I don't expect any. I will be gone for a while, but I'll be back for a short time in about 45 minutes, and maybe back longer in a few hours.23:32
ubuntivityJordan_U: can you wait for, say, 4 minutes??!23:32
ubuntivityJordan_U: just long enough for me to see the results!23:32
Jordan_Uubuntivity: The installation of grub-pc should do that automatically, and it would be a good test to be sure that the grub-pc package is configured correctly.23:33
Jordan_Uubuntivity: I'll quickly check back in in 5-10 minutes.23:33
ubuntivityJordan_U: OK, my grub-pc has reconfigured itself, I'll be rebooting in a moment to see the results23:34
CodeMouse92How do I point curl.cainfo in php.ini to use the certificates installed on Ubuntu? I'm not sure what the bundle .crt for that is23:37
ubuntivityJordan_U: Hello again. It successfully worked :) although it booted a little slower this time with no plymouth bootsplash displayed :/23:37
ubuntivityJordan_U: Thanks for your thorough follow up and effective diagnosis and solution23:37
ubuntivityJordan_U: as for the bootsplash and the stuff, I'll spend some hours googling here and there23:38
adamsilverSonikkuAmerica: Ah, it turned out Ubuntu reads /root/.profile not .bashrc when logging as root. Thanks for pointing out /etc/skel/.bashrc. I copied it over to .profile and now I see colors and stuff, too :)23:38
