User39943The directory structure of Ubuntu seems to have a primary bin folder and a bin folder inside usr. Following this guide (https://trac.common-lisp.net/cmucl/wiki/InstallingCmucl), I am not 100% certain they mean the primary bin folder. Anyone able to take a look for me?05:43

tjbiddleHi all. I’m load testing my rails app - It’s fine at 500 users & ~80 req/sec, if I bump to 600+ it craps out. I’m assuming it’s something to do with an open file limit, but I believe I’m setting my file limits correctly. On my load test machine the user I’m running the script as prints 65000 for `ulimit -n` and it doesn’t seem I’m even hitting the limit on the server with `ulimit -n | uniq | wc -l` at ~800 when ulimit default is 102407:07

holocronjust sayin.. system tuning is a pretty fine art07:09
tjbiddleholocron: Totally agree. It’s just it’s a very obvious hard limit ~600 users - not like it’s slowly scaling up, the second I hit *some* threshold between 500-600 the requests per second goes from ~20ms to 5seconds07:10
tjbiddleSo I’m fairly sure it’s a file limit - Just don’t know what I’m misconfiguring07:11

Moderator4797msev From what device are you installing ubuntu?09:13
EriC^^msev--: can you paste the output of sudo parted -l ?09:14

ppf/dev/sdX09:54

k1l_msevubuntu: i dont know your setup with windows and bios09:54
msevubuntuk1l_: its maybe uefi dunno09:55

msevubuntuk1l_: windows is installed on the ssd09:55
msevubuntuwhich is sdb09:55
msevubuntucan i fix it if its doesnt work this way09:56
ppfmsevubuntu: it doens't matter where you put the bootloader09:56
ppfas long as you boot from _that_ disk afterwards09:56
msevubuntui will post another picture on what i have on offer to choose09:56
ppfevery disk even may contain a different bootloader09:56
ppfso, for "portability", put it on the linux disk09:56
msevubuntudang cant screenshot09:57
msevubuntuok so i will just put it on sda09:57
ppfyou should be certain about the uefi question, btw. only with uefi you can boot a modern windows, and use secureboot09:58
EriC^^msevubuntu: pastebin sudo parted -l10:00
EriC^^it will show both disks and how they're setup10:00
EriC^^oh nevermind, just saw the last screenshot10:00
EriC^^looks like both are in legacy mode so you should be fine, set the bootloader to ubuntu's disk so it doesn't overwrite the windows bootloader in the mbr10:01
EriC^^then set the bios to boot the ubuntu disk first in the order10:01
* ppf agrees10:01
MaroonIs it reallly needed that after installation all drivers additionally have to get installed for mp3 and mp4 usage?10:01
EriC^^Maroon: it's cause it's not open source10:02

ppfgebruiker: sure.10:07
EriC^^gebruiker: no idea about zfs support10:07

msevubuntubecause its store bought10:09

EriC^^msevubuntu: you can always copy the mbr to a file prior to installing ubuntu and restore it when you want to remove ubuntu, that also works10:09
David_MHi. I downloaded Xubuntu iso and burned it on flash using dd. sudo dd if=xubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4096 sent and recieved data are the same but it shows 1.3 GB size. During download it showed 1,18 GB. What's wrong?10:09
msevubuntuso based on the partitions10:09
msevubuntuthat you see on the picture10:09
msevubuntucan you advise me if i should put it on sdb10:09
ppfgebruiker: no, server. btrfs works perfectly well, and unlike zfs it gives you the option to reconfigure your drive setup live10:09
ppfother than that, the two are pretty much on par10:10
EriC^^msevubuntu: we really can't tell from it10:10

ppfso it's just a matter of taste, really10:10
EriC^^msevubuntu: if you boot the pc with sda unplugged it would be known for sure10:10
ppfzfs is really heavy on the ram10:10
ppfa good rule of thumb is 1GB of RAM per TB of disk10:11
David_MZFS is for servers. You can try XFS.10:11
msevubuntuEriC^^: i really am not keen on unplugging disks and stuff10:12

ppfDavid_M: no10:13

David_MWhat about my first question?10:13
ChetManlyhow long has upstart been used ?10:13
msevubuntuso i should put it on sdb10:14
mibhi10:14
ppfChetManly: a few years10:14
ppfbut  it was more horrible than sysvinit :)10:14
ppfmsevubuntu: run sudo fdisk -l10:15
gebruikerDavid_M, pcbsd forks of reebsd, and freebsd.org/gnome has a whole team dedicated to the gnome on freebsd10:15
ppfthere's a Boot column10:15
gebruikerDavid_M, curious to know more - already googled a lot10:15
k1l_msevubuntu: the question about the bootloader is about the MBR of what disk. so its not about sda1, which is a partition, but about the MBR of sda or sdb.10:15
ChetManlyppf: I thought sysv was old10:15
ppfChetManly: yes, it is10:15
ChetManlylike old old10:15
k1l_msevubuntu: and the bootloader needs to overwrite the windows one, since the windows one cant boot linux.10:15
ChetManlylike preubuntu10:15
ppfgebruiker: zfs comes from the unix world10:16
msevubuntuaha ok so it should definately be sda since it says windows loader there10:16
msevubuntuwhat about uefu10:16
msevubuntuuefi10:16
msevubuntuwill it prevent it from booting or not10:16
k1l_ChetManly: for general talk about init systems and their history better go to #ubuntu-offtopic :)10:16
ppfmsevubuntu: it doesn't matter if you overwrite the windows loader or not10:16
ppfbut you need to use the linux loader  to boot linux10:16
k1l_msevubuntu: dont confuse sda1 with MBR bootloader10:16
ppfmsevubuntu: pastebin the output of fdisk -l, please :)10:17
k1l_David_M: your issue with size is the overhead for partitions and stuff. that is fine10:17
msevubuntuok10:17
David_MThank you.10:18
gebruikerppf, i know but why does it not seem to be memory hungry on bsd while it is on linux? My guesses are kernel wise?10:18
gebruikerDavid_M, why did you mentioned xfs ? Curous10:18
ppfno, the memory pressore is the same on unix10:18
msevubuntuhttp://pastebin.com/S3p7bpwB10:18
gebruikerppf, ubuntubsd comes with zfs too :O10:18
ppf*pressure10:19
msevubuntuthere is the output10:19
David_MBecause I've read about modern systems and found it better than ext4 and btrfs. I had bad expirience with btrfs.10:19
k1l_gebruiker: ubuntu has zfs support since 15.10. but i think the installer doesnt support it yet. its included for data partition and container usage. not for root partition usage. while you can still do a zfs root partition manually10:19
gebruikerppf, already read a lot about it but this is missing piece of info for me10:19

kbobahhhh ok, thanks ... I can install xfce on ubuntu with unity or can be a prob?10:30
EriC^msevubuntu: i think it's using sda for sure10:31
msevubuntuok so i should put it on sda10:31
msevubuntucool10:31
EriC^msevubuntu: sda1 has a boot flag (the *) and sdb1 doesnt10:31
msevubuntuok10:31
msevubuntudoes it mean that those guys who sold me the computer didnt install windows on the ssd10:31
msevubuntuthey are gonna get a whooping10:31
msevubuntuEriC^: so i should choose sda for the bootloader right10:32
EriC^msevubuntu: we dont know whats on sdb yet really10:32
msevubuntucool but i can proceed right10:32
msevubuntuwith the installation10:32
EriC^msevubuntu: that'll overwrite the windows mbr10:32
EriC^yeah if you dont mind it overwriting the windows mbr10:33
msevubuntuif i intend to keep linux on it then no problem right10:33
msevubuntui will be able to boot into both oses right10:33
EriC^otherwise put the bootloader location to /dev/sdb and it should put grub there instead10:33
EriC^yeah10:33
EriC^right10:33
msevubuntuok its good then10:33
msevubuntui shall proceed10:33

EriC^brunch875: how long10:37
* EriC^^ still here10:37
k1l_brunch875: that can take some time. depending on your system speed and load10:37
brunch875well, I opened a tty to do that like 3 hours ago10:38
brunch875I'm surprised it's still running (only checked now)10:38

EriC^^then sudo dpkg--configure -a10:38

brunch875I did ctrl-Z followed by bg10:39

M-JLucwhen choosing this option, displayed window is empty10:43
M-JLucthere is nothing to move up or down10:43
M-JLucnothing is displayed10:43
EriC^^M-JLuc: ok, pastebin /boot/grub/grub.cfg10:43
k1l_M-JLuc: then you dont have an older kernel installed?10:43
M-JLucand OS boots as usual after time out10:43
EriC^^M-JLuc: and /etc/default/grub10:43
EriC^^i think this might be enabled GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true"10:44
M-JLucits a MATE, could be on ubuntu 12.04 ou 14.04 - i want to update10:44
M-JLucand i havent the session password - hence10:45
EriC^^M-JLuc: cleanest would be to make 16.04 iso and boot it and backup your stuff and then install10:45
EriC^^then copy your stuff back10:46
Sven_vBso I changed the main servers to us.* and also reconfigured my apt proxy to avoid apt-cacher-ng. Same message for security.ubuntu.com, the others just changed hostnames but still not signed. http://paste.ubuntu.com/23254874/10:47
Sven_vBk1l_, ^10:47
k1l_Sven_vB: so you are using a proxy10:48
M-JLuci've had bad luck with installing recent ubuntu on old hardware10:48
k1l_Sven_vB: proxies are known to make issues with gpg signing.10:48
M-JLucit couldnt install and coulnd boot anymore at all afterward10:48
M-JLucso i'm a bit reluctant with taking that risk...10:49
msev--Grub woek10:49
msev--Works10:49
EriC^^M-JLuc: did the live usb work?10:49
EriC^^msev--: great :D10:49
msev--But ubuntu doesnt want to boot10:49
Sven_vBk1l_, that's why I configured it to use my non-caching squid, it has very minimal config to really just forward stuff w/o touching it10:49
M-JLuci've not tried yet with this new old computer to upgrade (i couldnt boot on usb on previous trial but maybe usb key wasnt properly prepared)10:50

EriC^^M-JLuc: or a live usb?10:52

M-JLuci've not used USB key as for now10:53
EriC^^msev--: maybe some hdd setting might help, have you tried enabling or disabling ahci?10:53
Sven_vBk1l_, also tried via TOR, same problem, so it really ought to be a local issue10:54
M-JLucwithout password i wont be able to edit config files probably...10:54
EriC^^msev--: this seems it might help https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=5276610:55
M-JLucand with empty advanced boot menu, i cant set a new paswword... :-/10:55
EriC^^M-JLuc: yeah, i'd say get the password fixed first10:55
EriC^^M-JLuc: restart and when you get grub press "e" then go to the line that says linux /boot/vmlinuz..... and add the line "init=/bin/bash"10:56
EriC^^it should drop you to a root shell with the filesystem readonly, then type mount -o remount,rw /10:56
EriC^^and change your user's password with passwd <user>10:56
M-JLucok i try - but not sure 'e' does anything10:56
EriC^^it lets you edit the entry thats highlighted10:57
Sven_vBM-JLuc, if that doesn't work, you can still boot a live USB and chroot into your installed system10:57
EriC^^after you edit it, press ctrl+x to boot it10:57
msev--Eric maybe i will try later10:59
msev--Hopefully someone will guide me through10:59
M-JLucoh when i press "e" on normal Ubuntu option i can edit something begining with "SetParams 'Ubuntu'"10:59
Sven_vB"then go to the line that says linux /boot/vmlinuz"11:00
M-JLucgot it11:00
EriC^^msev--: ok11:00
M-JLucwith "... ro quiet splash $vt_handoff"11:01
ppfmsev--: what kind of machine is this?11:01
ppfas in, i386 or amd64?11:01
M-JLucand "initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.16..."11:01
mist1231Hiya guys, i'm having a very hard time cleaning up my boot partition11:01
EriC^^M-JLuc: yeah, only add in the linux /boot/vmlinuz line11:02
mist1231i've attempted apt-get autoremove -f and even removing them with dpkg11:02
mist1231using up dpkg frees up some space but when i try to install something it fills the boot partition back up11:02
M-JLucyes, what do i add in that line EriC^^ ?11:02
Sven_vBmist1231, recovering from KDE? ;)11:02
ppfmsev--: i've seen that twice before, once when i somehow installed an amd64 image on an i386 machine and once when i used unetbootin to create the thumb drive11:03
ppfand i've got no idea what's wrong with the latter...11:03
mist1231Sven_vB:  =)11:03
M-JLuci add "init=/bin/bash" after that line and before "initrd..;" line EriC^^ ?11:03
Sven_vBmist1231, so is the problem that lots of packages are scheduled for install that you don't want to install?11:04
EriC^^M-JLuc: yeah, add it after quiet splash11:04
M-JLucso i add it as a new line not as a one-more option11:04
EriC^^M-JLuc: no, add it between the options11:05
M-JLucok ! so "ro quiet splash init=/bin/bash $vt_handoff"11:06
EriC^^yeah11:06
mist1231Sven_vB: i want to run a apt-get upgrade without it failing11:06
EriC^^mist1231: can you pastebin df -h ?11:06
Sven_vBmist1231, paste its failure report11:06
Sven_vByeah also disk spaces11:07
mist1231sec11:07
Sven_vBbtw, if it really was KDE, i'd give up and reinstall from scratch. which for me is easy because I optimized for disaster recovery. :)11:07

Sven_vBok, "gzip: stdout: No space left on device¶ E: mkinitramfs failure cpio 141 gzip 1"11:12

Sven_vBmist1231, in case the clean approaches get too cumbersom, you could try as work-around moving stuff away to another partition using a live USB, and setup mountpoints and/or symlinks to them.11:14
M-JLucok i changed password11:15

Sven_vBanother issue: a lot of packages for servers (e.g. mysql, samba, …) include config to have them run by root as system services on default ports. is there an easy way (for precise or xenial) to opt-out of that, and have the server binaries idle in stand-by, ready to be started by normal users within their restrictions?11:25
mist1231ok that went through successfully EriC^^11:26
Sven_vBwith "an easy way" i mean especially w/o relying on package maintainers to add the opt-out for each individual server11:27

JonTheNiceGuy[m]Hey MelRay :)13:48
MelRaySo I'm trying to figure out a problem with my Apache named virtual host and a second server for webmail, scheduling, etc. I acting strange.13:49
MelRayI already asked in httpd13:49
MelRayIt is pretty simple. I created two virtual servers using ubuntu-server 16.04..the first is the named virtual host server. SSL and all the rest work just fine. I added a redirect so traffic inbound to http will go over to https as it should13:50
=== Trystam is now known as Tristam
MelRayMy router can only forward 80 and 443 one time. It doesn't matter if I have the second server (webmail) on a different internal LAN ip...I have to assign non common port.in this case 808013:51
MelRaySo I installed the webmail package and the script allow me to set it to listen on port 8080 instead of 80. It all worked locally and outside coming back to the external static ip from my ISP13:52
dmitrisHi guys, need help with ubuntu updates, when i run dry upgrade (apt-get upgrade -s | grep Inst) i can't identify security package, all listed packages showned as trusty-updates.13:53
MelRayThe documentation for the webmail states that in order to use the Redirect command I must install apache on the webmail server then enter the Redirect in the correct configuration file which I have done.13:54
de-factoMelEay you can use nginx to proxy all external requests to port 80 and serve internal lan port 8080 to those13:55
MelRayHowever even though my DNS is setup for mail.mydomain.org and I type that in a browser it redirects me to the secure webpage and not to mail.mydomain.org:8080 which is the way it is entered in the .conf file. Any idea why this would be? Shouldn't it just find mail.mydomain.com at port 8080 and show the webmail login page?13:55
MelRayde-facto: Been there and tried that most are not pertinent to my specific situation..the reverse web proxy would not allow it to resolve upstream to the correct internal LAN ip..thank you though for your input.13:56
JonTheNiceGuy[m]MelRay ultimately, if Nginx won't resolve upstream, then that's a problem in the nginx config, or possibly in the way your lan is structured, but it should proxy successfully if it's got an internal host.13:58
JonTheNiceGuy[m]MelRay, however, it sounds like you have a more fundamental problem in your mail app13:58

zartarranyone can troubleshoot why nothing happens?13:59

JonTheNiceGuy[m]MelRay, the mail app should be providing links like <a href="/path/to/app?stuff"> but instead it sounds like it's providing the links like <a href="http://mail.mydomain.org/path/to/app?stuff">14:00

DiegoCplease help me :(14:14
MelRayDiegoC: Please ask a question :-)14:14
petkohello14:15
JonTheNiceGuy[m]RonWhoCares: Basically, you have a problem in the sources that Apt is using. It's unrelated to the fact you're trying to install Flash - you've added a PPA at some point in the past which either no longer exists, or doesn't have files for your architecture/release.14:15
de-factoMelRay you can only forward port 80 of your router to one internal computer in your LAN. on that computer you can have a http server (like nginx) serve own files, but also proxy requests to other computers in lan (and also applications on other ports on the same computer). So you could have client -> port 80 on your router -> nginx on port 80 on lan -> mail ap on any port or computer in your lan (e.g. port 8080 on another computer in lan)14:16

JonTheNiceGuy[m]True, OerHeks, but if he's copying & pasting from random sources, you never know *where* they might have put it :D14:19
de-factoMelRay you can have nginx decide where the request would be server (own or upstream) by the hostname (e.g. mail.host.com)  and by the uri path (e.g. host.com/mail/...)14:19

MelRayde-facto: I read the documentation on nginx and the conf file that needs to be created/modified. When I followed those instructions and included both the internal LAN ip's for web server/mail server with nginx having the port forwards coming to it from the router I was unable to see either the web server or mail server. MelRay ProxyPass / http://mail.domain.org:8080 and have done with it...14:23
DrGrovOerHeks: Good, then probably best to do the install itself at a better time.. I have no patience at the moment to fiddle in the 2nd hard drive as / home :-D14:24

SchrodingersScat!mint | CaptainBlackton, it's really not.  I don't use Ubuntu so I can't confirm if this is a thing that it does.  Are you using Nautilus? it's likely more a Mint/Nautilus question.17:25

t3kg33kGreetings17:31
zvoltaHi17:32
t3kg33kI'm having an issue with a sed command. I am trying to substitute localhost in the /etc/file with another hostname but it's replacing the ip6-localhost also and I don't want that.17:32
t3kg33kHere is the command I am trying: sudo sed -i.bak 's/\<localhost\>/matevm1 localhost/g' /etc/hosts17:33
eventyou'd need to include only localhost as a string17:33
eventnot somecraphere-localhost17:34
naccwell that won't work either, as 'localhost' is in ip6-localhost17:34
eventI'd probably do it with regex!17:34
t3kg33kIt replaces the localhost just fine it also replaces as ip6-matevm117:34
ouroumov_t3kg33k, tripple sed: ip6-localhost -> uniquestring, localhost->newhost, uniquestring-> ip6-localhost17:35
t3kg33kI want it to replace localhost and localhost only17:35

t3kg33kouroumov_: I'll try that17:36
nacct3kg33k: fwiw, the normal in-sed way is to use lookahead in your regex17:37
naccwell, the closest equivalent of lookahead in sed is probably the ! operator17:38
ducasset3kg33k: '\slocalhost\s' includes whitespace before and after17:38
naccducasse: yeah, that should work generally too17:38
Amivitnacc, the script is called with & for background, but it still doesn't work and I think it's because it's a subprocess, so when the parent process dies it goes down with it17:39

catbeardnacc: http://kopy.io/y0Qjf17:48
nacct3kg33k: fwiw, you might want to consider using something other than sed for this17:48

nacct3kg33k: as other tools (e..g perl regex) have better support for lookahead, etc17:48
nacccatbeard: ok, so i'm guessing at some point in the past you manually installed linux-image-4.2.0-27-generic, and it's now stuck (autoremove can't remove packages you told to install manaully or keep installed)17:49

plmk1l_: yes, I know that. I see that changelog before you past me. But the fact is that bug happen on 49.0 and not happen in 49.0.119:32
k1l_plm: then file a bug on ubuntu describing and proving the facts19:32
fjeekhey, why does it say like this even though I shut down windows correctly?: http://prnt.sc/coap5g19:32

th0rcdorsal, no routing issues. I don't ssh outside the local network, but havent run into any issues so far If I wanted to ssh in I know I would have to do port forwarding at the router20:01
cdorsalth0r, gotcha. so, are you also using wlan0 as an access point?20:02
th0rcdorsal, the pi is set up just as a gateway between two networks. Everything that comes in goes to the wifi router20:02
th0rcdorsal, wlan0 connects to the public wifi so it is just a client to that network20:02
th0rcdorsal, I think an access point would have the same ip on both sides20:03
cdorsalth0r, I see. So I'm currently trying to do this: laptop <-> ubuntu thumb drive <-> local network switch20:04
th0rcdorsal, (the same ip range...not the same ip :)20:04
cdorsalth0r, it sounds like I'm missing a piece20:04
th0rcdorsal, is the thumb drive plugged into a computer?20:05
cdorsalth0r, yep20:05
th0rcdorsal, ok...exactly what are you trying to do? Access the thumb drive from outside?20:05
cdorsalth0r, so it's really laptop <-wlan0-> ubuntu thumb drive <-eth0-> local switch20:05
th0rcdorsal, no....the thumb drive itself doesn't have a nic, does it? It is plugged into a computer and you are accessing that computer20:06
cdorsalth0r, I need to be able to scp from my laptop to the local switch and listen to the local switch network packets over wifi20:06
th0rcdorsal, is the thumb drive plugged into the laptop?20:06
cdorsalth0r, sorry, the thumb drive is connected to a usb hub along with a usb wifi dongle20:07
cdorsalth0r, the hub is connected to another system20:07
Jakey3what does this do gpg --keyserver hkp://keys.gnupg.net --recv-keys 409B6B1796C275462A1703113804BB82D39DC0E320:07
th0rcdorsal, cdorsal the usb hub is a dumb device...just adds more usb ports to a computer. The usb hub,the drive, and the wifi dongle are all plugged into a computer somewhere, and that computer is what you want to access20:08
cdorsalth0r, [windows laptop] <-wlan0-> [ubuntu "system" with thumb drive and usb wifi dongle] <-eth0-> [local network]20:09
k1l_!nomodeset | RoyK20:09
ubottuRoyK: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter20:09
cdorsalth0r, the thumb drive is not connected to the windows laptop. eth0 is an adapter on the separate system that the thumb drive is connected to20:10
k1l_RoyK: and look into the wiki.ubuntu.com they have wikipages there for mac hardware and what to do to get it running for that device20:10
th0rcdorsal, you want to be able to copy to that drive?20:10
cdorsalth0r, essentially the thumb drive is just there to route the traffic from the local eth0 (on the system that the drive is connected to) to the connected usb wifi dongle (wlan0)20:12
cdorsalth0r, then I'm connecting my laptop to the wireless access point and trying to listen to the eth0 traffic, which should be forwarded to wlan020:12
hydroid'systemctl suspend' is only working once on my laptop. I'm running ubuntu 16.04  on a mac laptop. Is there a fix to this, or a better way to suspend?20:12
th0rcdorsal, that drive can't route anything, it is a dumb device. Whatever smarts you have it plugged into is the device you want to get to20:12
cdorsalth0r, with the thumb drive plugged into the system, and with the wifi dongle connected to the hub I can definitely listen to the eth0 traffic20:13
cdorsalth0r, but I cannot pass the eth0 traffic to wlan020:14
cdorsalth0r, are you saying that it's not possible?20:14
th0rcdorsal, no but I think there is a much better way to do what you want.20:14
Jakey3anyone20:14
cdorsalth0r, please elaborate20:14
prasantayaap20:14
th0rcdorsal, I am assuming the usb hub, wlan0, eth0, and the drive are all plugged into the ubuntu box. That ubuntu box then is what you want to access.20:15
cdorsalth0r, ah...20:16
th0rcdorsal, one way to do what you want is to set up all that forwarding, but that will be a very interesting exercise to say the least.20:16
cdorsalth0r, I cannot tell you what the ubuntu box is, but let's assume it's just a computer with two ethernet ports and a usb port20:16
cdorsalth0r, so eth0 is actually on the ubuntu box, and the wifi dongle and the ubuntu thumb are connected to the ubuntu box's usb port20:17
th0rcdorsal, I would consider this....ssh to the ubuntu box and run tcap, which if I remember right is the command line version of wireshark..20:17
cdorsalth0r, okay, got it20:18
th0rcdorsal, then you can download the capture file and read it in wireshark, or watch it via ssh in real time if you can keep up with the traffic20:18
=== JustRamon is now known as Raqbit
th0rcdorsal, in short, don't try to forward a copy of all that traffic via ubuntu to windows...let ubuntu do the work20:19
=== Raqbit is now known as JustRamon
=== JustRamon is now known as Raqbit
th0rcdorsal, another (better) option is the use X-forwarding, although I dont know if xming runs under the new windows20:19
th0rcdorsal, then you run wireshark on ubuntu, but it looks like a window on your laptop20:20
th0rcdorsal, you don't even realize it is really on ubuntu20:20
cdorsalthor, that's a great idea20:20
th0rcdorsal, I do X-forwarding all the time between my servers and my desktop/laptop, but I run debian/raspbian on them all20:21
th0rcdorsal, I used to have xming running on a windows XP laptop and do the same thing, but I don't know if xming worksi anymore20:21
\9xming works fine today20:23
th0rcdorsal, there you go...according to \9 xming still works. So install it on your laptop and run wireshark on the ubuntu box to monitor eth020:24
cdorsalth0r, perfect20:25
th0rcdorsal, my bad...it isn't tcap...it is tcpdump that is the command line sniffer20:25
th0rcdorsal, tcap is the file format that tcpdump and wireshark both use.20:25
th0rcdorsal, dynamic dump time....long time since I used this stuff20:26
cdorsalth0r, that's alright, I knew what you meant. thanks again for the help!20:26
cdorsalth0r, I tend to over complicate things20:26
th0rcdorsal, no problem...good luck20:27
th0rcdorsal, I have X on all my servers. Don't need to run it, just have it available. Then I use X-forwarding a lot20:27
th0rcdorsal, also, with X-forwarding you don't have to do any work on iptables. Just ssh to the box and everything else is done in the tunnell20:29

k1l_gebruiker: ok, to make that short: you dont exchange a FS with another FS with the same or more issues. ext4 has been the standard since it works in its limits. the next FS will be btrfs, most say.20:50

sed12that what im talking about21:03
k1l_sed12: no, you said <sed12> every time i install a new kernel, i must edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg to change the timeout21:03
sed12ubuntu 15, ubuntu 16 - /etc/default/grub timeout setting doesnt work21:03
Bashing-omsed12: If grub is in a consistent state then an edit to the /etc/default/grub file AND 'sudo update-grub' should be all that is needed .21:03
sed12i edit grub.cfg because grub file doesnt work21:03
sed12i did that too21:03
sed12i ran update-grub and still doesnt work21:04
sed12and its a very old problem21:04
k1l_sed12: please show your /etc/defaults/grub file and show the output of "sudo update-grub" in a pastebin please21:04
sed12current grub file is untouched, i only change timeout in grub.cfg, i learned my lesson21:04
k1l_sed12: ok. then stop ranting in here if you dont want to solve the issue. thanks21:05
sed12every time update-grub was successful21:05
sed12every time timeout was the fscking same21:05
sed12only after i changed it in grub.cfg it worked21:05
tgm4883sed12: calm down21:06
alejandroHi?21:06
sed12its a very very old problem21:06
alejandrowhat's up21:06
sed12i googled and im not the only one complaining21:06
sed12i think even ubuntu 14 had the same problem21:06
tgm4883sed12: you either need to do what the people here are asking you to do, or go complain somewhere else. This channel is for support21:07
sed12tgm4883, tomorrow i shall post it21:07
sed12but i have a feeling nothing will be solved21:07
tgm4883sed12: why wait until tomorrow?21:07
sed12its a really, really old problem21:07
tgm4883sed12: I've not had that issue before21:08
k1l_sed12: then come back when you can provide facts. this channel is not  for rantings.21:08
sed12man, im not in america21:08
tgm4883sed12: ???21:08
sed12?????21:08
tgm4883irrelevant?21:08
sed12not quite :D21:08
tgm4883I'm pretty confident that update-grub doesn't do a geoip lookup21:08
sed12update-grub every time returns 021:09
sed12success! success!21:09
sed12i reboot and... timeout=10 secs21:09
tgm4883sed12: which timeout setting are you changing?21:09
k1l_sed12: can you now provide the output?21:09
sed12tomorrow, guys21:09
k1l_sed12: so come back tomorrow21:10
sed12its quite an old problem21:10
Bashing-omsed12: The 1st line in that file " # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE " . Do you not think there exists a better way ?21:10
sed12im experienced, i know what to change21:10
k1l_no need to discuss that without plain facts provided. so come back tomorrow.21:11
lordcirthIt's not really about experience, the warning is more because it gets overwritten so often21:11
tgm4883sed12: I just tested it here and it works fine editing /etc/default/grub21:11
tgm4883sed12: there's no reason to reboot to check if update-grub worked21:11
sed12tgm4883, ubuntu 15,15,16, my old pc, current pc - never worked21:11
sed12i reboot to see if timeout was changed21:12
sed12and it never is21:12
tgm4883sed12: well to be fair, you keep saying that but aren't providing any data21:12
sed12its always 10 fscking second21:12
sed12guys, there was peace and silence here21:12
tgm4883sed12: you don't need to reboot to check that. After running update-grub,  just look in the grub.cfg file and see if it updated21:12
sed12man, it was successful, why even bother?21:13
k1l_sed12: you have still not shown any prove that the right way doesnt work. so its just your sayings vs. millions of users not having that issue. so provide some facts or come back tomorrow21:13
Jordan_Used12: I can help you , but you don't seem to actually want help. If your next comment isn't one giving the information requested (I would personally like to see the complete contents of /etc/default/grub and your complete, unmodified, /boot/grub/grub.cfg) then I won't bother trying to help you tomorrow either. If you can't provide any useful information today, then please don't post any further comments21:13
Jordan_Utoday.21:13
sed12if update grub returns 0 and nothing is changed, is it my fault?21:13
tgm4883sed12: can you paste your /etc/default/grub file21:13
sed12tomorrow21:14
Jordan_Used12: Nobody has said that it's your fault. Please leave for now and come back tomorrow.21:14
tgm4883sed12: that depends, did you fubar your /etc/default/grub file? If so, then yes21:14
tgm4883geez21:14
k1l_sed12: so come back tomorrow to solve that issue then. for plain rantings this is the wrong channel21:14
tgm4883this isn't rocket science. update-grub reads from the /etc/default/grub file and generates the grub.cfg file.21:15
Jordan_Utgm4883: There are times where Ubuntu's grub-mkconfig overrides the timeout setting given in /etc/default/grub.21:17
tgm4883Jordan_U: when21:17
Jordan_Utgm4883: When GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 and a second OS is detected. This is becaue of how Ubuntu modified grub-mkconfig so that when no OS is detected the grub menu is not shown, but when another OS is detected it is shown.21:19
EriC^^sed12: it's the recordfail maybe21:19
EriC^^try setting GRUB_RECORDFAIL_TIMEOUT=$GRUB_TIMEOUT21:20
oshekfehHi everybody, I installed teamviewer on my Ubuntu but it caused many problems, I restarted the system then I failed to login and I received “Failed to start session”. I went to the terminal and tried to reinstall ubuntu session or execute apt-get update, but I received the following error: “E: some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead”. What can I do to overcome this error and get back my Ubuntu work again?21:20
EriC^^it's like a fallback timeout grub uses when it thinks it didn't boot properly before21:20
Jordan_Utgm4883: Search for "timeout" in /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober .21:20
Exodioushello everyone21:22
Exodioushow do i see which graphics i have on my laptop21:22
Exodiousi wanna check if i can plug in 2k monitor21:22
k1l_Exodious: "lspci"21:23
Jordan_Utgm4883: My recommendation for users hitting that particular issue is to create a new file /boot/grub/custom.cfg with the contents "timeout=0" (without the quotes), then add a comment to /etc/default/grub noting that they have done so (otherwise they may be surprised if they later try to set GRUB_DEFAULT to a non-zero value and it has no effect). But I wouldn't recommend doing so without first confirming21:24
Jordan_Uthat that is what is going on.21:24
oshekfehAny idea about clearing this error “E: some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead”?? Please21:25
EriC^^oshekfeh: might be old ppa's21:25

TorroneI'm piling up downtime atm21:48
Torronelol21:48
bekksTorrone: So use tar, not zip instead.21:48
Jordan_UTorrone: Why do you need to unzip anything?21:49
TorroneI need to run a script to synch a folder with amazon s321:49
naccskinux: depending on how you did it, i thought the dbs migrated over seamlessly21:49
Torroneso I need to install a software that comes zipped in .zip format21:49
oshekfehk1l_: as I mentioned before, I failed to use ssh, so I can’t get the text!21:49
skinuxnacc: I simply installed it using apt-get21:49
Jordan_UTorrone: You can't just scp the directory to your local machine then sync from there to amazon?21:50
naccskinux: did you remove mysql first?21:50
skinuxI connected to it using HeidiSQL and all my databases are gone, so I think I need to migrate21:50
skinuxNo I didn't remove MySQL first.21:50
confundusTorrone: Do you have busybox? Chances are it has unzip21:50
naccskinux: i'm reading, e.g., http://askubuntu.com/questions/531455/how-to-drop-in-replace-mysql-with-mariadb21:50
TorroneJordan_U, maybe, but I don't have that skill yet and I don't have much time21:50
k1l_oshekfeh: that system seems like a mess. 12.04, 14.04 repos and ppas using 16.0421:50
skinuxAlthough, when trying to troubleshooting problems with MariaDB, MySQL itself did get removed for a minute.21:50
naccskinux: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/switching-to-mariadb-from-mysql implies the same21:51
oshekfehk1l_: Here is the forigen artchitecture https://s16.postimg.org/m9dolbjp1/Whats_App_Image_2016_10_01_at_12_50_01_AM.jpg21:52
oshekfehk1l_: What I should do to fix my system?21:52
skinuxOkay, so since I didn't remove MySQL FIRST, is all my data gone?21:52
naccskinux: i have no idea, i'd assume not21:52
naccskinux: you could try removing mariadb and seeing if mysql client still is able to access it21:52
Jordan_UTorrone: sshfs username@server_hostname:/ /mnt/21:53
naccskinux: i would assume unless you did something like -y to apt, it would have asked to remove databases21:53
naccskinux: regardless, i hope you made backups first21:53
k1l_oshekfeh: "sudo dpkg --remove-architecture i1386"21:53
skinuxNah, I didn't make backups21:53
Jordan_UTorrone: After that, the root filesystem of the remote server will be mounted to /mnt/ and you can copy files around however you like, including with a GUI file manager.21:53
naccskinux: then you can't possibly have cared about your data, go ahead and just continue with mariadb21:53
skinuxFair enough21:53
