[00:48] hello [00:48] new to ubuntu mate [00:48] installed ubuntu-mate on a Toshiba Satellite. I can see the list of available wifi networks but it doesn't complete a connection to any of them. Even the open networks do not connect. Iattempt the connection and after about 30 seconds, it displays a disconnected notification. [00:49] hello ren_ [00:49] hello!^w^ [00:49] sounds like a driver issue [00:49] sadly i gave up on ubuntu mate... linux mint sorted out most of the bugs so i run that instead [00:50] im using raspberry pi ,and i succeed to install ros and arduino ide in raspberry pi 3 model b [00:51] TheMarius, I tried installing ubuntu as well as lubuntu, but could not even get the computer to load the install screen. Ubuntu mate actually finished the install and everything is perfect except the only way I can get on the internet is via Ethernet [00:51] sadly ubuntu seems to have some major bug problems [00:51] not sure what mint does but they seem to fix them [00:52] ren_, I haven't really looked into rasberry pi, Is that an OS or is it a device? [00:52] a device. [00:52] TheMarius, i'll try linux mint. thanks [00:53] with arm cpu. [00:53] do that ... drop all ubuntu... but if the same problem is in mint, i suggest you hop somewhere completely different.. lets say opensuse, mageia or something like that [00:53] ren_ ok, I've never tried it. Did you install Ubuntu-mate on it? [00:54] i installed ubuntu mate into raspberry pi [00:54] than i installed ros and arduino ide in ubuntu mate [00:54] mate: you see.. your hardware might not like ubuntu ... ubuntu is based on debian and mint is based on ubuntu... ubuntu seems to be more focused on mobile devices now than developing a proper bug free system.. instead linux mint does that job.. debian is too basic for you, you wouldnt like it [00:54] you might like mageia or opensuse though [00:55] they are different branches [00:57] TheMarius, I think it is more of a toshiba problem. I've installed ubuntu on quite a few machines. The toshibas always give me problems with the wifi. I'm going to give it a few more tries before i give up on it completely. [00:58] ah ok... if you know linux well you might want to try manjaro aswell [01:03] TheMarius, Thanks [01:12] yup [01:12] good luck [01:13] mint is the one i run and its actually a proper, usable os [02:29] Is is just me or is the forum under high latency atm? [02:56] whats up guys [02:56] anyone here using kali linux [02:56] >?? [05:10] Hi [05:10] Hello [05:10] I am on ubuntu mate [05:11] I already loved it [05:11] is there anyone? [08:26] siema eniu [08:27] flexiondotorg, hi. Is it me or is the site under high latency [08:27] flexiondotorg, I mean the forums [08:28] Yeah, network issues at datacenter. === atlantic1 is now known as atlantic === atlantic is now known as atlanticd [13:33] hi... every time I start up the system I get a "please enter passphrase for disk cryptswap on none"... how can I get rid of this so it doesn't appear every time I start up? [13:34] hi dumpchama [13:34] you're using FDE? [13:35] what is that? i'm not sure if I have it [13:35] Full Disk Encryption [13:35] As in, did you check "encrypt this installation for security" or something like that during install [13:35] I did select "encrypt the home folder" [13:36] That one should be seamless [13:36] this message didn't appear until I moved my Windows 7 partition a bit in gparted [13:36] like, the system will boot if I just press enter but it is still annoying [13:36] dumpchama, possible that the UUID of the partition changed [13:37] is it possible to set it back then? or maybe update the new value somewhere? [13:38] dumpchama, first check if UUID of cryptswap is the same in output of "lsblk -f" and in your file /etc/fstab [13:40] yes the UUID is the same fstab and lsblk output [13:41] dumpchama: put the output of cat /etc/fstab && sudo lsblk --fs, to pastebin [13:41] dumpchama, and please say what version of Ubuntu MATE you're running [13:42] I found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs-utils/+bug/1447282 but probably not same bug since it started happening after you edited the partitions [13:42] Launchpad bug 1447282 in eCryptfs "Does not use encrypted swap when using GPT partitioning + encrypted home directory (ecryptfs)" [High,Fix committed] [13:42] http://paste.ubuntu.com/23312975/ [13:43] my version is 16.04 LTS [13:43] dumpchama, I found this: http://mattand.azurewebsites.net/ubuntu-home-drive-encryption-issues/ with steps for a workaround that might apply to your case [13:44] i will have a read at the link then, thanks for your help ~ === tom is now known as Guest14255 === Guest14255 is now known as TheUncertainMan [13:49] Hello everyone! [13:49] hello TheUncertainMan [13:50] You have no idea how excited I am. First time firing up my Raspberry Pi 3, and I'm feeling like a giddy child! [13:51] Ran into a slight problem though. I'm plugged into my old tv by HDMI, and my resolution is currently low and unchangable [13:51] Is there a command in the terminal I can use to change this? [13:53] Unfortunately rpi3 isn't a proper pc, so the xrandr commands are unsupported... [13:53] arghh, I thought so [13:53] There's a config.txt where you can specify some weird kernel parameters to play with the outputs [13:53] ok, found in boot? [13:53] Yes [13:53] Cheers alkisg [13:54] * alkisg hopes TheUncertainMan bought the rpi3 for a weather station or something, and not as a workstation... [13:54] *TheUncertainMan bought the rpi3 just to learn Linux for university [13:54] * [13:55] Aw balls. [13:55] Don't you have a real pc to install linux on? [13:56] Even a virtual machine works better... [13:56] I do, but I'd rather stick to my pi. I do have access to Linux Labs at the university though, so I'll be learning either way. [13:56] Buying the rpi3 was just a nice little project to tinker with. [13:57] with 1GB ram the RPi3 runs ubuntu okay... until you try to actually interact with it [13:57] Yeah, I thought 1gb of ram was a bit...modest. And it's something like ddr2 as well isn't it? [13:57] not sure about that one, though I only use mine for idle tasks [13:58] Oh, any examples? I need some ideas for projects. [13:58] Aside from a little music player, or perhaps a file server? [13:58] seedbox? xbmc? or even something embedded like weather station as you mentioned [13:59] mine is a seedbox =_= [13:59] Man, I am so excited to learn all of this [13:59] hello [13:59] hi [14:00] Hello! [14:01] or if you're an engineering student I'm sure they have a lot of uses for these [14:01] I'm studying Computer Security and Networks [14:02] then I dunno [14:02] So I'm sure I'll learn some rather naughty ways to use this. [14:02] I'm sure it will come in handy though, whether for personal or educational use [14:02] Absolutely [14:03] Reckon my pi will be alright running at 1920x1080? [14:04] don't see why you can't [14:04] Great. Cheers mate [14:04] the GPU is touted to support 1080, though I can't remember if that was streaming or just display [14:05] Well, we'll soon find out. Brb === tom is now known as TheUncertainMan [14:38] Hey again guys [14:39] I'm still having some trouble with my resolution on my rpi3/tv set up. [14:39] Can anyone lend a hand? [14:41] I've tried using hdmi_mode to change my resolution, as well as the actual display window in Ubuntu, but I'm still locked to an awkward resolution [14:41] And when I've forced disable overscan, it's made matters slightly worse === tom is now known as Guest67526 [15:51] Hey all [15:51] Hello all [15:51] Does anyone know if hardware acceleration will be supported in the future? [15:54] not sure, but that would be great.. [15:54] So, so great [15:55] how come so many people in here and yet only 2 of us are talking.. [15:55] Had this ridiculous idea of trying to run all sorts of games on my Raspberry Pi3. [15:55] Well, that's clearly because we're important [15:55] Only the important people talk [15:55] hehehe [15:55] Everyone else is just reading and nodding. [15:55] Isn't that right guys? [15:55] .....See? [15:56] People stay connected but won't always be watching this window. [15:56] *sigh* Spoilt it [15:57] brb, trying to fix my resolution [15:57] On that note, I'm off. [15:59] Annd back [15:59] So, anyone ever dealt with using a TV via HDMI for a Raspberry Pi? [16:00] I'm having rather irritating resolution issues that google isn't helping with [16:17] Damn I'm bored because the forums are down [16:18] Yeah it's been hindering my progress [16:18] Any reason why they're down, or is it a mystery? [16:20] TheUncertainMan, [16:20] Yeah, network issues at datacenter. [16:21] Ahhh [16:21] Those datacentres [16:21] Yup [16:22] TheUncertainMan, you're the rpi3 guy amiright? [16:22] How easy is it to set up UM on it, in your opinion? [16:23] Ermmm [16:23] Depends how prepared you are. [16:24] I bought the rpi3. Just the motherboard, nothing included. [16:24] I then had to grab a sd card, all the gear, etc. [16:24] Then I discovered I didn't have a sd reader [16:24] But if you've got all of that, it's not bad at all [16:24] What extra gear is there? Display, SD card, hdmi cable? [16:24] You just have to download ubuntu mate, unpack it using something like Winrar, and then write it to the sd card. [16:24] Basically yeah [16:25] K [16:25] So not that hard to do [16:25] And a case for it, ethernet cable. you know, that old chestnut [16:25] Sure [16:25] Just don't hook it up to a tv [16:25] I'd probably skip the case [16:25] Most of my problems have come from that. If you hook it up to an actual pc monitor, it's fine. [16:26] Hm [16:26] Oh, resolution issue? [16:26] exactly [16:26] also sound has to be enabled too [16:26] All via the boot config.txt file [16:26] I read alkisg said earlier xrandr does not exist for rpi? [16:26] apparently, yeah [16:27] hang on, I'll test it [16:27] typed in xrandr on its own. Told me it failed to get size of gamma for output, etc [16:28] I can --help it though. [16:28] So the program is installed, but not sure if it's worth a damn on the platform, k [16:28] yup. :] [16:30] And what are you gonna use it for TheUncertainMan? Robotics? Cool hacks? [16:30] Sorry, new to this. How do I whisper/direct message? [16:31] Well, proper protocol is: ask for permission from the target, if granted right click target in the column of nicknames [16:32] Then select "Open dialog window" [17:16] Yay the forum is back! [17:52] * anp is away: I'm busy === dare is now known as udare [19:44] how to install gedit [19:59] sudo apt-get install gedit ren [19:59] ok [19:59] on mate on pi [19:59] gedit is [20:00] pluma [20:00] install pluma .. pluma = gedit [20:01] ren [20:02] wow [20:03] thank you [20:03] i will try it [21:08] Would anyone happen to know why Perterbos named the DE we use MATE? [21:10] Perberos* [21:31] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerba_mate [21:58] No other motivation behind the name? [22:04] hi how can i get some help in spanish abot the MATE 16.4 [22:05] *about.. [22:06] no sure why it's named after that [22:06] maybe try #ubuntu-es? [22:09] im trying to configured my compiz but i cant find the windowManager [22:09] i read maybe there i can chage from "marco" to "compiz" [22:11] sorry for my english [22:15] is not @ops in this chanel? [22:19] kahuna: You can change the window manager in mate-tweak [22:19] It is in System > Preferences I believe. [22:20] (If working in the default MATE panel setup.) [22:22] mm no really [22:23] You can just hold and press , then input mate-tweak to bring it up. [22:24] no i mean in mate tweak i cant not chages what i need [22:25] i found some help but is for mint edition can i post the link here maybe u see and know what im talking about [22:25] ? [22:26] http://www.taringa.net/posts/linux/15124483/Solucion-MATE-y-Compiz-en-Linux-Mint.html [22:26] is in spanish but there have a sreenshot of i looking for [22:27] ...Interesting. Well, here's an alternative; In terminal: [22:27] gsettings set org.mate.desktop.required-components window-manager "" [22:27] Then in mate-session-properties specify a new autostart to run compiz (no need to do compiz --replace since the above disables compiz as required WM), and if that does not work (as in, it's fatal for your X session), hold >ctrl> + and press F1 to open the autostart file you made with this command, after you sign in (assuming it's called compiz.desktop): [22:27] nano ~/.config/autostart/compiz.desktop [22:27] In there, change it back to marco and you'll be able to undo the earlier changes to bring your desktop back to some state of normality. [22:28] Oh, also, + + to return to X session. [22:29] Since gsettings cannot be used without a working X session, using an autostart to specify compiz is way easier to deal with. [22:30] Else, kahuna you can try compiz --replace right now after you do some tweaking in ccsm, installable with this; [22:30] sudo apt install compizconfig-settings-manager [22:31] is gonna take me time to desifrate this but so much thnaks i will try [22:32] Well... [22:32] i dont get what i should to do firts xD [22:33] or i better imigrate to mint looks more friendly [22:33] Do what I last said first, because you can press + + to exit your present session, of if that does not work, to what I said earlier to edit the autostart in nano, but instead of that, do ths: [22:33] sudo service lightdm stop [22:33] sudo service lightdm start [22:33] That will allow you to force-quit the session and reload the desktop manager (being lightdm) to sign in once more, with no harm to your system. [22:33] or if that does not work* [22:37] kahuna: Linux can be very intimidating for newbies. I know, I was there. [22:37] But simply switching to a different DE won't fix all of your problems. I'm not sure if your GPU or motherboard is on the Compiz blacklist. [22:38] Because there are some GPUs that Compiz won't even allow use of. [22:38] o really i will gooogle aabout [22:38] I was around Ubuntu since 2009. [22:38] SO I know a few things. [22:39] Like, right now I am chatting via finch in a shell because trying to open something else made my desktop act crappy. I do not know why, I'll have to figure it out later. [22:39] But for most people, so long they don't do any extreme experimentation with programs nost Linux systems out of the bx are stable. [22:39] most* [22:39] Damn it, typos everywhere. [22:40] But yeah, out-of-the-box Ubuntu MATE should not be giving you much trouble. There is one more thing you could do. [22:40] If you try 'sudo apt install --reinstall compiz' that should resolve any missing package issues that could had happened during install. [22:41] yeah i feel u i just finish with deal with problems drivers of my AMD Radeon in laptop.. was no so easy to run Steam Games [22:41] but finaly im playing xD [22:41] If that doesn't make it show in mate-tweak, one last thing you could do after that, to see if it isn't a post-install problem is to just do it live and see if the ooption shows up there. [22:41] option* [22:42] ok [22:43] If it doesn't show up in a live session (even after resolving your video card issues) then you won't have any fun. Oh also, AMD's drivers won't work in 16.04 last I read; Search "AMD" in https://ubuntu-mate.community to see more. [22:44] yeah i figured that somes days ago [22:45] By 16.10 AMD should release a driver. Else if you don't want to wait, or are peeved that an LTS version of Ubuntu will be holding you back, you might want to check out other distros. I am sure the Arch community has figured something out by now. [22:45] Ask if your video card will be supported in any Arch-based distribution in ##arch-linux just to be sure. [22:47] I know, kahuna it's lame af but that's the best answer I can give. [22:49] Oh kahuna the channel I referred you to does not exist; it's #archlinux instead. [22:49] thanks man [22:49] Welcome. [22:51] hehe I am somewhat unfamiliar with Finch's keyboard commands. [22:53] More oopsies from me. [22:53] Oh well. [22:53] kahuna: You'll need to register your username on freenode and sign in if you wish to join #archlinux; see #freenode for more information about this. [22:54] Else, you can type into your client "/msg nickserv help register" for specific information about registering and using your login credentials. [22:55] Funny; TO get any decent help via IRC you have to condition yourself to treat your client a bit like a terminal. [22:57] Oh well. I hope he finds his way. [23:00] bonsoir? [23:53] rav: bonjour
