chaospsychexcan someone experienced in sys-admin help me work through why I can't gain sys-admin when I'm putting in the right password ?00:21
chaospsychexi'm on ubuntu 12.0400:22
Ben64chaospsychex: explain everything in detail00:22
chaospsychexand would NOT like to reinstall00:22
chaospsychexBen64, I enabled auto-login for the admin user account. now i can't get root priveleges00:22
chaospsychexBen64, I know i'm entering the correct password00:23
lordcirthchaospsychex, when using sudo, you mean?00:23
chaospsychexlordcirth, sudo and....everything. I can't even install apps00:23
pumafiedwin 100:23
lordcirthWell, those other things all use sudo under the hood00:23
chaospsychexlordcirth, oh ok, well yeah. no sudo00:23
lordcirthchaospsychex, ok, so when you use sudo, what exactly does it say? wrong password?00:23
Ben64what is the admin user account, how did you enable auto-login00:24
chaospsychexlordcirth, yes. wrong pass00:24
chaospsychexBen64, through the user accounts in system settings. gui00:24
Ben64ok that answers 1 of the two questions00:24
chaospsychexBen64, I'm on the admin user account right now00:25
lordcirthchaospsychex, by 'the admin user account' you mean the one the installer created?00:25
Ben64which is called....00:25
chaospsychexBen64, Daniel00:25
chaospsychexlordcirth, yes00:25
Ben64what is the output of 'groups'00:25
chaospsychexBen64, output is 'daniel adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin nopasswdlogin sambashare'00:26
chaospsychexBen64, ?00:28
Ben64chaospsychex: if you type 'passwd' can you get past the first part where it wants your password00:28
chaospsychexBen64, thank you! problem fixed. What happened and why did that work ?00:29
Ben64¯\_(ツ)_/¯00:30
chaospsychexBen64, ?00:30
lordcirthThat's a shrug emote00:31
lordcirthWe have no idea00:31
chaospsychexoh, lol00:31
lordcirthI don't see why autologin should break sudo, or why changing your password should fix it00:31
Ben64i thought it was just going to be a forgotten password00:31
chaospsychexwell thanks you two. some guy earlier just told me to reinstall.... 0.o I'm not that dumb...lol00:32
Ben64you DO need to upgrade or install a newer version before April though00:32
chaospsychexBen64, I will. Working on that now00:32
FrozenSolidi keep trying to install the new livepatch feature, but getting the error message "error: cannot install "canonical-livepatch": snap not found"00:32

jamie_1hey bashing-om you around?00:39
Bashing-omjamie_1: I see ya .. what's up ?00:40
jamie_1Bashing-om: im running into something i havent ran into before, i have a fresh install on a laptop of ubuntu 16.04 and any time i try to install something i get dkpg returning an error code (2)00:41
jeffrey_fmy firefox has been lately opening in windowed and quite small too.  How do I force it to open maxmized?00:41
Bashing-omjamie_1: Pastebin the command and the output. wee see what we can see .00:42
jamie_1Bashing-om: pastebin is https://pastebin.mozilla.org/891999400:42
jamie_1i will admit right off the bat i tried to put in gnome 3.2000:43
Bashing-omjamie_1: "  Input/output error " I would start with a file system check .( that too can indicate hardware problems ) .00:44
jamie_1Bashing-om: honestly im thinking that its the hdd... because the reason i put a fresh install was the last fresh setup killed itself some how00:45
jamie_1the one i rebuilt with a new root dir and kernal00:45
jamie_1it was running great and i was back to my coding and it just went "screw you im gonna suddenly start crashing everything"00:46
Bashing-omjamie_1: Sounds like a hard drive failing - run a SMART check on the hard drive to check its status. You can do this from a LiveCD/USB using disk utility or from the command line using smartctl.00:47
jamie_1Bashing-om: is it possible to use the disk check in disks app00:49
jamie_1nvm :/ that requires gparted and  i cannot install anything00:49
Bashing-omjamie_1: Yeah, run it from the install " disk utility " maybe installed by default .00:52
jamie_1Bashing-om: right now its looking like i couldnt do it either way... only way i can do it is from install disk00:53
jamie_1Bashing-om: im just gonna try to figure it out later or just used fsck00:55
jamie_1*use00:55
jeffrey_fmy firefox has been lately opening in windowed and quite small too.  How do I force it to open maxmized? (also asked on mozilla irc00:55
=== none_ is now known as later
jamie_1jeffrey_f: for the most part i would think that would be in the about:preferences in firefox or it would be a system setting00:55
jamie_1let me take a quick look00:55
lordcirthjamie_1, fsck won't tell you if your hard drive is failing, except by chance.  It checks your fs integrity00:55
Bashing-omjamie_1: K .. see ya got " gnome-disk-utility " installed .00:56
jamie_1Bashing-om: i use ubuntu gnome but good luck getting help over there lol00:56
ercx2xhey00:56
jamie_1lordcirth: but if its not bad it could correct it00:56
ercx2xis it possible to speed up my ubuntu server by things like turning off the gui or something?00:57
ercx2xI have my server setup with ubuntu going but not sure if I could save on power/speed somehow00:57
Bashing-omjamie_1: But, will not fix bad blocks on the hardware .00:57
bazhangercx2x, server has no gui by default00:57
jamie_1Bashing-om: but if it does not fix it i pop in my old 128gb ssd00:57
jamie_1with my original setup before trying to swap to this 500gb hdd00:58
ercx2xbazhang: yeah, i dont feel like i need a gui00:58
Bashing-omjamie_1: Good to have a backup plan :)00:58
ercx2xbut i'm not sure how to disable it00:58
ercx2xi shouldnt need it since my server (nginx) runs in the background00:58
jamie_1Bashing-om: i always have backup plans00:58
jamie_1:p00:58
bazhangercx2x, disable what00:58
ercx2xgui00:58
jamie_1i have backups of most of my stuff online all over the place :p00:58
ercx2xor turn it off temporarily00:58
jamie_1like my 115gb on google00:58
ercx2xmaybe there is no such thing but I'm just curious00:58
bazhangercx2x, did you install server from the iso00:59
ercx2xyeah00:59
ercx2xi'm running ubunto 4 tls00:59
kk4ewtor boot into tunlevel 300:59

=== cy is now known as Guest27409
jeffrey_fjamie_1: not in prefs and I couldn't find it in config00:59

lordcirthYou installed Desktop00:59
ercx2xoh yeah,00:59
debkado_o01:00
bazhangercx2x, thats not server then01:00
ercx2xI installed ubuntu desktop then and I'm using it as a server01:00
lordcirthercx2x, you should have said that, then01:00
jamie_1lol... im gonna use fsck in an in use file system... this is gonna end bad... but either way i dont care... im curious how bad it will f things up01:00
ercx2xi actually didn't even realize there was two different ubuntu01:00
bazhangercx2x, then thats lamp on the desktop01:00
ercx2xuh01:00
orlockjamie_1: It  might not even let you01:00
ercx2xnot really lamp01:01
jamie_1its letting me orlock01:01
lordcirthercx2x, they are just different package sets, not huge differences01:01
ercx2xim running ruby nginx01:01
orlockjamie_1: Oh.. have fun then?01:01
jamie_1am i the only one curious on what will happen?01:01
bazhangercx2x, whatver the case, thats not the server setup01:01
jamie_1well more of how bad it will be01:01
ercx2xI guess I should have just installed ubuntu server then, oh well. Is there really any downside to running desktop?01:01
ercx2xas a server01:01
SchrodingersScatercx2x: maybe your real question is how to keep unity from starting, or how to remove that01:01
jamie_1as long as you have set it up properly01:02
lordcirthsimplest to disable it from starting01:02
orlockercx2x: As a one-off, not really, you can always disable the GUI, and it may not make a performance impact anyway, all depends01:02
ercx2xunity is what creates the gui?01:02
jamie_1unity is the gui01:02
lordcirthsystemctl disable lightdm ?01:02
ercx2xalright, nothing to do with unity the game engine thing right loll01:02
ercx2xok i dont think i want to disbale it01:02
SchrodingersScatcorrect, nothing to do with it01:02
lordcirthNo, unrelated01:02
ercx2xi doubt it would really be much of a performance increase but thanks with that word i should be able to google it01:03
lordcirthTechnically Unity doesn't start until you login, right/01:03
lordcirthSo really you'd want to disable the display manager01:03
lordcirthWhich I think is lightdm01:03
jamie_1why does everyone keep mentioning systemctl? its not a automatically installed packege... its part of smartmontools01:03
lordcirthjamie_1, no, that's smartctl01:04
lordcirthsystemctl is indeed automatically installed01:04
jamie_1oh whoops my bad :p01:04
jamie_1i read the wrong words some times01:04

ubuntu425Ben64, i used photorec to get back files, it create more than 600 subfolders and i need to bring the files in the subfolders in just one folder for better and easily select the files i need. obviously without opening folder by folder11:09
Ben64ok but how do you know what you need11:09
Ben64putting that many files in one folder is going to be a crap fest11:10

Ben64you do not want what is probably 300,000 files in one folder11:15
ubuntu425with which command?11:15
Ben64which is why photorec separated them in the first place11:15
ubuntu425eheh nice question... certainly i made some mistake in the setting11:16
abhinavmehtaIs there on STDOUT or multiple one?11:16
abhinavmehtaMy understanding is - by default there is one STDOUT in a given system, where as there could be many STDOUT listener devices like TTYs or pipes consuming it.11:16
abhinavmehtaIf there are multiple ones - then let say if some server/service writing to STDOUT, where does it goes.. if that service is running as dameon or nohup process and how could we listen that?11:17
abhinavmehtaIf there is single STDOUT - then what will happen if multiple processes are writing; Let say if I run some service non-daemonized, I dont see other services logs getting mixed and cluttering .. so how this could be managed if there is single STDOUT11:19

See the table at https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/v2.6.34/kernel/sched.c#L1356 . Both are going to be fighting for the scrappy timeslices left over after every other process runs. rodrigo_Hi. I'm having trouble loging in on Ubuntu 16.10 with LDAP. I use the same configuration for eons but now in 16.10 if I leave the necessary "nsswitch.conf" "files ldap" settings and the common-account pam_ldap entry I can't login. The nsswitch.conf setting makes the login prompt to never be presented, lightdm keeps showing the turning arrow and common-account pam_ldap setting makes a command line login to return to the login prompt without error message.13:36
_Kevin_I did sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade earlier today, then rebooted. Now it's on 17.04 Zesty instead of 16.10 Yakkety, and I can no longer open Software and Sources or add or remove repositories.13:37
rodrigo_The strangest part is taht all that I just described is true for the boot. IF I remove the problematic settings, make a login and later return the problematic settings, everything works fine. Up until the next boot.13:37
