AzelphurHey folks, OpenVPN driving me a little nuts. I have a virtual machine running Ubuntu Server, OpenVPN and a web server. Shutting down the VPN allows me access to the webserver, as soon as I fire up OpenVPN - no access to the webserver. Any ideas?12:26
daftykins:>12:26
daftykinsAzelphur: pastebin of "netstat -tuln" before and after?12:26
Azelphurdaftykins: https://dpaste.de/wZao12:29
Azelphurthe web bit is listening on 58846 for reference12:29
daftykinsthank tux for that 'raw' button XD12:30
Azelphurhehe12:30
daftykinsso is that you trying to run it on UDP 50302?12:30
daftykinsit being OpenVPN12:30
Azelphurdaftykins: I guess, the OpenVPN part works fine, it connects and I can route traffic through the VPN12:31
daftykinsfrom what point are you trying to hit the site? your desktop on the same home network?12:32
Azelphurcorrect12:32
diddledanAzelphur: are you routing ALL traffic through the VPN? if so then the web server will only be accessible through the VPN12:32
Azelphurdiddledan: yup, that's the problem.12:32
daftykinsmmm gotta change your OpenVPN config12:32
daftykinsif your chosen web server were listening on all interfaces you'd hit it on the VPN host IP :D possibly 10.8.0.1 on a default config12:33
Azelphurquestion is what to :)12:33
diddledanyou could try messing with iptables...12:37
Azelphuryea, I think that's what I'm gonna have to do, sounds painful >.<12:38
diddledanbasically routing ALL traffic through the VPN means that replies on your public IP to the web server are trying to go through the VPN which has a different public IP12:38
diddledanrandom aside: I love the theme music for Westworld12:41
Azelphurindeed, seems like what I want is traffic splitting, or split tunnelling12:41
diddledanthe whole intro is epic12:41
daftykin1err not sure if my last messages got through there before Wilhelm killed me12:41
diddledanaww, poor daftykin112:41
daftykin1Azelphur: did you see the digitalocean guide? that has some handy tips12:41
daftykin1ikr :(12:41
Azelphurdaftykin1: I did not, link?12:41
daftykin1diddledan: i lost mein Wilhelm </Archer>12:41
zmoylan-pidaftykins last message pre split was 'if your chosen web server...'12:42
daftykin1zmoylan-pi: ty sir12:42
daftykin113:35 < daftykins> it has a couple of routing changes that i'd bet will come in handy, i didn't ask which release you've got on there either12:42
daftykin1oh they've done a new one for xenial - https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-an-openvpn-server-on-ubuntu-16-0412:43
daftykin1i've always followed the trusty one, personally12:43
Azelphurdaftykin1: yea, I don't need to set up a server, I already have one rented :)12:43
daftykin1Azelphur: no look at the config, the guide is about the OS - not their service12:44
daftykin1focus, people12:44
AzelphurI see12:44
daftykin1check out step 712:45

daftykinsif those edits don't work, whatever your VPS is using must have modified packages12:48
daftykinsphysical trusty server i have at a clients failed to come back after rebooting it for a new kernel again, it only ever happens if i'm not there... if i am on-site to reboot it, it's always fine12:50
zmoylan-pidancing frog problem http://www.retrologic.com/jargon/D/dancing-frog.html 'hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my rag time gal...' ♫12:52

AzelphurVPN provider told me that was impossible12:53
zmoylan-pilooks like patrick stewarts twitter has been hacked12:55
daftykins"VPN provider" o012:56
daftykinsi thought you were hosting it :P12:56
Azelphurlol12:56
daftykinsso it's also debian and you asked here12:56
Azelphurdaftykins: nope, not hosting12:56
Azelphurdaftykins: also nope, not debian, Deluged package for Ubuntu creates the user debian-deluged and runs it under that.12:57
daftykinsoh i thought you were saying you'd fixed it but i don't follow the relevance of the paste12:57
Azelphurdaftykins: I have fixed it, I can now select which traffic goes through the VPN and which doesn't12:58
daftykinsyeah my guide link had relevant params to that methinks12:58
AzelphurI see :)12:59
daftykinsper user or per process could be fun though12:59
Azelphurwell I'm happy anyway, been stabbing at this one for days12:59
daftykinsseriously?12:59
daftykinsouch :P12:59
Azelphuryea12:59
AzelphurI can do per-user, per process, whatever really now12:59
Azelphurjust iptables mark it12:59
daftykinshere's a funny one i had a bit ago, my OpenVPN setup on a DO VPS died, couldn't understand why it wasn't working - turned out i'd accidentally booted a 32-bit kernel on a 64-bit host a while back, so it was unable to load the kernel modules to have the routing rules in \o/13:00
Azelphurhaha13:00
daftykinsthey've since realised they can't keep up with kernel updates though and have just implemented a GRUB loader to load the default you have installed on the virtual disk13:00
BrebblellaHi, I've installed ubuntu, changed to XFCE, but the nm-applet is missing from the indicator panel. nm-applet appears to be loaded, and a notification pops up saying there are wifi networks to connect to, but it's not in the indicator area. Any ideas?15:14
BrebblellaNada? Google is no help :(15:21

brmbrmcari don't like apple22:02
brmbrmcarosx<windows<linux22:03
daftykinsnah see that's a daft claim22:05
daftykinsthe only real answer is they all suck, but we pick the ones we either get paid to deal with, or the ones we mind picking up after the least22:05
zmoylan-pieven if i am paid to deal with it i have no respect or admiration for windows22:10
zmoylan-piit's just a constant battle of wills with a big pile of poo...22:11
zmoylan-pii've had mac, i've given up on mac... linux is all that remains22:12
daftykinszmoylan-pi: we should make a card game about IT support situations22:13
zmoylan-pii think i've seen some...22:13
daftykinsi could put "compiling a compatible wifi driver module" on one, then you respond with a Windows quip22:13
daftykinsand we keep going 'til we're out of ideas :>22:13
zmoylan-pia drive 200miles to disover muppet didn't plug in pc, lose 3 turns...22:14
daftykinsXD22:15
zmoylan-pidiscover customers new pc is just a monitor, transfer them to sales, get cut of commission 20 shekels22:15
zmoylan-pidiscover that customer can't connect to wifi as they have no wifi and have been using neighbours for 5 years till they changed password.  lose 1 turn explaining to them that they have to sign up with an isp and wait for installation22:17
zmoylan-piit would really be just a list of some of my weirder problems... :-)22:18
popeythere really is a game in this22:18
zmoylan-piso i'd see it as a card game with players been developers/admins/managers each with abilities taking turns...22:21
zmoylan-pia manager would hold all the cards but could only play 1 due to short attention span... :-)22:21
daftykins:D22:22
daftykinsalthough he or she could also defuse an employee with management phrases22:23
zmoylan-pimanagement would also have less turns as they were tied up in meetings all the time...22:23
zmoylan-piso it would have goals for money, life, career.  developers obviously score badly when trying to get a life or money...22:24
zmoylan-piand every time a chance card turns up a new language/platform they'd lose money time having to invest time/money investigating it... :-)22:25
daftykinsyou should put romance in, then you can do the Star Trek thing of love always losing out to career22:25
daftykins"well i love you, but i just got promoted to this far off station in the ass-end of nowhere"22:26
daftykins*credits roll*22:26
zmoylan-piget a job were you can telecommute, win the game... :-) goals for developers22:27
daftykinsooh that sounds like what we should call it22:27
zmoylan-piget a job were you are allowed use a cattle prod on users goals for admins22:27
zmoylan-piget a job were you can get drunk as a skunk at lunch, goals for managers22:28
* zmoylan-pi will have a sniff around gaelcon this weekend and have a look at the card games and see if anything seems like a platform for this...22:30
daftykins\o/22:32
daftykinsfame is within reach22:32
zmoylan-pia card reading. a nutter named daftykins on irc helps you fix managers desktop in record time, get a backhander bonus 10 shekels and draw another 2 cards22:33
m0nkey_hmm22:48

diddledanit does it in both 16.04 and 16.1022:49
m0nkey_network for me comes up22:49
m0nkey_just shows the network is offline22:49
