[05:50] FireStriker: what is other os? [06:13] Win 7 got some help in the ubuntu irc let me get you up to speed on all of the information [06:14] Something's broken on lubuntu and it will not let me in, when I login it brings a black screen with dev/sda5:clear than the login screen returns [06:15] I can get into win 7 [06:15] you want delete lubuntu and restore win7 boot? [06:16] I want to fix lubuntu I thought of a reinstalltion because I don't know what screwed up [06:16] http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/32523/how-to-manually-repair-windows-7-boot-loader-problems/ [06:18] Oh I can use the disk ok that's good, than I can reinstall lubuntu after fixing the boot record [06:22] What utility's do you recommend to install for lubuntu? [06:23] i use minimal cd [06:23] Oh [06:23] console install [06:24] No repair window the buttons missing [06:26] FireStriker: Have you checked that you are the owner of ~/.Xauthority ? [06:26] ? [06:26] If the system shows lightdm and allows you to login, it doesnt sound like the install itself is broken [06:27] If you've ran GUI stuff using root/sudo there's a chance that ~/.Xauthority gets the wrong permissions, and that will prevent you from logging in. So it is a good place to start [06:28] Ok that's sounds about right how do I check that? [06:29] FireStriker: You can press ctrl+alt+f1 to jump to a tty, (f7 back to X) [06:29] FireStriker: on that console, login as your user, then issue "sudo chown $USER:$USER ~/.Xauthority" [06:29] Ok [06:30] that'll set ownership for you on that file [06:30] Ok [06:34] I don't get Lubuntu loading screen before the login screen anymore btw that's why I think some thing screwed up [06:34] Right. Perhaps you've messed around with GPU drivers? [06:35] Nope [06:35] Very well [06:36] The last thing I did was trying to transfer files to a file in /usr/local/game or some thing, the console didn't say anything, it didn't transfer anything [06:36] FireStriker: anyhow, can you verify that you are the owner of that file by running "ls -la ~/.Xauthority" ? [06:37] and then you run "cat ~/.xsession-errors" to see if that has any interesting info [06:38] Not atm the login screen had pissed off it's not here any it's not loading now [06:39] It's just showing '/dev/sda5: clean, 161760/3710976 files, 1571659/14838272 blocks' [06:46] looks like fdsk work /dev/sda5: clean, 161760/3710976 files, 1571659/14838272 blocks' [06:47] Ok I am in [06:50] It's not letting me login [06:51] Ok I am in [06:51] Lower case lol [06:52] FireStriker: So... everything is OK now? [06:52] It's hard to keep up with what you're typing [06:56] What's the command agin [06:57] Yea all is good now(i think) I am in the console [06:57] And I have logged in [07:03] Ok we might have a problem. "Cannot access '//.Xauthority': no such file or directory [07:07] hateball: JohnDoe_71Rus guiverc are you there? [07:08] FireStriker: "ls -la ~/.Xauthority" [07:08] that will show you the current owner of that file [07:08] Which needs to be your user, and not root [07:09] FireStriker: just walked in. any files starting in a "." do not normally show with a ls command; unless -a (all) files are given; eg. ls -la (-long & -all as per hateball's) [07:09] Same error [07:12] 'sudo chown firestiker ~/.Xauthority' (where firestriker = your username; it changes owner to you) [07:12] sorry no such file... for some reason it doesn't exist. my misread/mistake. [07:18] Is that bad guiverc I would think so [07:19] no idea sorry. i did a web.search & "The .Xauthority (not .xAuthority) file can be found in each user home directory and is used to store credentials in cookies used by xauth for authentication of X sessions. Once an X session is started, the cookie is used to authenticate connections to that specific display." from http://askubuntu.com/questions/300682/what-represent-xauthority-file [07:20] man page is xauth; looking at that now. [07:20] (ie. man xauth) [07:22] what did you do that created the Xauth error? was it at login; or you did a command (ie. it cuold be just a warning, not an error) [07:22] To be fair, it may not be an .Xauthority problem at all, I merely suggested it could be [07:23] as it is common that new users run gui apps as root and that tends to mess it up... [07:23] At any rate, there should be such a file, regardless of who owns it [07:23] yep: the page I read said same; and that was reason for creating gksudo; to avoid this issue. [07:24] Ok [07:24] The file has left the computer [07:29] The screen went black no hard drive active [07:29] Nvm [07:30] Forgot mouse doesn't work in the console [07:39] So now what do I do? Do I continue with the "repair" or fix MBR and reinstall [08:58] Back [09:02] FireStriker: hard to tell what is broken with your system, but as long as it boots there's nothing wrong with the bootloader [09:02] FireStriker: But you do get a graphical login prompt? [09:02] and it is only after you try logging in that it fails [09:02] Yep [09:04] It just brings up a black with this '/dev/sda5: clean, 161760/3710976 files, 1571659/14838272 blocks' than goes back to the login screen [09:29] Hey guys what's the system requirements? [09:34] FireStriker: thing is that if you have no ~/.Xauthority file, it should be recreated on startup. But for some reason that fails then? You still do not have such a file? [09:35] Yep [09:39] well you can manually generate one, but... something must be broken if it doesnt do it on its own [09:39] FireStriker: what changed between things working and now? [09:39] did you do a system upgrade that failed? etc etc [09:43] No I was just trying to move doom 3 pk4's to the game file to the default doom 3.run thingy [09:44] The console keep giving me errors and did nothing [09:48] well, cant really do much if you cant paste errors and such [09:49] hard to guess what you may have done [09:50] Same [09:51] It was just throughing errors at me becase the command was wrong [12:59] Can I just use imgburn to burn a live DVD ? [13:05] RatchetTheGamer: are you on windows looking to make a bootable media? [13:05] Yea [13:14] Will it work hateball ? [13:17] RatchetTheGamer: It should, yes [13:18] Ok do you know the best settings by any chance? [15:16] hi there [15:16] how to switch between different sound chips? [16:10] hello i can't use the eternet with lubuntu some one could help me [18:07] Hi all [18:08] I have installed Lubuntu 16.10 and it works fine, but I want to switch to 16.04 Lubuntu because of LTS. The problem is that when I try to boot it without installing, my Lubuntu freezes on the loading screen, and suddently my laptop turns off. Do you have any idea how can I fix this? [18:12] namosca: why go backward? you can just keep upgrading until the next lts and then change it so you're on an lts-only path [18:12] Yes, but I heard that upgrading causes trouble frequently [18:12] Am I misinformed? [18:12] i would say so [18:13] i mean by that token you shouldn't ever upgrade lts :) [18:13] So what you mean is that upgrading LTS bring trouble, and upgrading non-lts brings no problem? [18:14] namosca: i would say that upgrading ALWAYS has the possibility of causing problems, but it also has the possibility of solving problems. not upgrading or upgrading less is not necessarily a good idea based on that logic alone. [18:15] hmm [18:15] This means I always should backup before upgrading? [18:15] namosca: the most important aspect of upgrading is ensuring the security of your system. lts allows you to do that while not necessarily upgrading other features. which can be bad because there could be non-security issues that are fixed that you'll have to wait longer for [18:16] namosca: upgrading itself, as a general rule, is not going to cause any problems with existent data as long as you don't tell the installer to overwrite it [18:17] namosca: DOWNgrading, in general is a bad idea. and going from 16.10 to 16.04 IS a downgrade. [18:18] are upgrades automatic, or Lubuntu will ask me to confirm, or do I have to ask for this proactively? [18:19] namosca: if i remember correctly, the default is to ask for confirmation. you can make them automatic. or don't do them at all (again, not suggested) [18:19] ok [18:20] I understood that with the non-lts version, I only have 9 months of updgrade.. so, after this, I will get no confirmation anymore and will have to download the whole .iso again? [18:23] namosca: you will get 9 months of supported package upgrades. after that, you have until the next version comes out to upgrade to the next OS version [18:23] namosca: all of that can be done within the system [18:24] ok... maybe I am just thinking too much :) [18:24] namosca: that's usually the problem :) [18:24] I should wait and see [18:43] bye wxl!! Thanks for the talk [18:44] namosca: np. have a great day! [18:46] exit [20:11] hi all, need help with ACPI on Lenovo t430 ... acpi_listen do not detect FN + F4.. why ?
