[00:00] do you use krita? [00:01] oh, I think I'm beginning to understand [00:01] I have krita3.0 in one of my PPA's [00:01] https://launchpad.net/~clivejo/+archive/ubuntu/krita [00:01] I'm not using krita. I wanted to try it [00:01] snap install krita [00:02] 3.0.1.1 is in there [00:03] After reading https://wiki.debian.org/AppStream I'm still a bit lost. Is there a difference between the installs from discover vs synaptics? [00:05] discover is cross platform [00:05] if the meta data is missing in the debian package, it doesnt see it properly === zomble is now known as grumble [00:07] synaptic is a package manager which works directly with apt and deb files [00:08] what happens if I use the ubuntu app store? [00:08] clivejo: any idea why my DVD drive is not starting up? [00:08] which iirc is gnome's app store [00:09] sponge: no idea [00:09] I havent used vanilla ubuntu in years [00:09] * clivejo doesnt like Unity [00:10] sponge: I personally use the terminal to install stuff, or Muon package manager [00:11] clivejo, True, although the HUD can search nicely (commands/files) which other flavors can't. [00:12] As can krunner [00:13] muon also has krita 2.9.7 [00:14] muon is a deb package manager [00:14] like synaptic [00:14] but nicer IMO [00:21] You're right. Muon is nice [00:21] I just tried it now [00:21] It's a shame it's not auto installed [00:21] Is there a package manager for snaps? [00:21] and do appimages get updates automatically? [00:22] No not appimages [00:22] Snap can be [00:23] Muon was unmaintained and was dropped from KDE releases [00:24] but a developer gave it some love and got it working again just in time to get it into Xenial [00:24] sponge: the plan is to snap and appimage most KDE software [00:24] and should become available on https://store.kde.org/ [00:25] within hours of release [00:26] Will the user be able to see if the app he installs is snap or appimage? [00:27] snaps are installed [00:27] But I don't think app images are [00:30] ewwwwww https://store.kde.org/p/1009178/ [00:30] why?!? [00:32] Hmmm the appimages files are cool! [00:32] hehehehe [00:33] Politics aside, that splash screen doesn't look bad at all if you're into the minimalistic side of things. :) [00:37] Also, the concept of projects that attempt to make one platform look like another is an ancient partner of desktop computing History. What the appeal is? I can imagine that for some, it's a "proof of concept" kind of deal. But fedup with lots of issues now a days [11:46] narolli: Do you have a Kubuntu question? [11:46] As I was browsing through different platform of ubuntu like kubuntu and edubuntu etc [11:46] I need help on this [11:46] how do i choose the right one for me [11:48] narolli: The different releases only come with different defaults. You can for instance go with Ubuntu with Unity, and then later switch to KDE Plasma which Kubuntu uses default [11:48] And you can choose which user interface to use at login time [11:48] The underlying system is the same regardless [11:48] Ok [11:48] narolli: And easiest to test is to download them and put on a thumbdrive and boot your machine and have a look around [11:49] so as of now I will run Ubuntu [11:49] Thanks!!! === fa is now known as vo1pbx [14:22] hey guys, I'm having some issues with a multi-monitor setup that I was hoping someone could clue me in about. On Kubuntu 16.04, my laptop system set in a docking station with a display connected via DisplayPort and one connected via VGA. [14:22] In display configuration under system settings only the laptops built in display and the one connected through DisplayPort is detected [14:23] log`: is this a default 16.04 ? [14:23] the VGA monitor is not visible/detected in the display configuration utility [14:23] hateball: yup, totally vanilla [14:23] xrandr reports the existence of a VGGA display but it is disconnected for some reason [14:24] log`: then I suggest you start by adding/upgrading to backports ppa: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports && sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade [14:24] log`: multimonitor is iffy in 16.04... even with backports [14:25] alright coo, thanks [14:25] all the fancy fixes for kf and qt wont be in until 17.04 I think [14:25] is it better in 16.10? [14:25] yes, but not perfect [14:25] alright [14:25] here's my xrandr -q output in case you're interested: http://pastebin.com/hCfHS2UQ [14:25] bunch of bugs both in the kde bits, as well qt itself [14:26] the command you pasted won't do a dist-upgrade to 16.10 right, just backports? [14:27] log`: dist-upgrade is not the same as do-release-upgrade [14:27] !dist-upgrade [14:27] A dist-upgrade will install new dependencies for packages already installed and may remove packages if they are no longer needed. This will not bring you to a new release of Ubuntu, see !upgrade if that is your intention. [14:33] very informative. [14:33] had to remove a third party repo with no Release that was blocking the upgrade [14:33] will I need to reboot for changes to take effect? [14:35] log`: yes [14:36] thank you very much, 20% done, hope it works :) [14:50] hateball: it doesn't seem to have alleviated the issue, are there any specific steps you would recommend? [14:51] log`: have you made sure they are not placed on top of each other, the displays? [14:51] in the screen gui thingy [14:51] hmm [14:51] because that's how it likes to behave for me sometimes, breaking a setup that has been working for days or weeks [14:51] yeah the missing display is not even in the dropdown selector thingy [14:52] hmm [14:52] log`: and this has worked as expected in the past? [14:52] the nvidia configuration thing that comes with the binary blob drivers only sees one display [14:52] I'm trying to remember [14:53] no, I'm not sure this has worked in the past [14:53] i mean the laptop has worked in the dock on windows but i don't think i've tried it in linux [14:54] log`: oh you have nvidia blob? then you should use nvidia-settings [14:54] hmm or maybe it has, i ercently moved from one city to another and i'm a bit confused as to when i installed this specific distro [14:55] and in that case, you may want to use the nvidia ppa as well, and get a more recent driver: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa && sudo apt update && sudo apt install nvidia-370 [14:55] and nvidia-prime, I guess, if you are using hybrid gpu [14:55] thank you [14:55] yeah it has optimus [14:55] alongside a intel card [14:55] but that is a whole different headache I am not very not much in the know of [14:55] cool cool cool [14:56] hateball: just an aside, is apt-get completely out of fashion since you're just using apt? [14:57] log`: apt is more fancy like, has progress bars and all [14:57] alright :) [14:57] also one doesnt have to remember apt-get vs apt-cache for various operations [14:58] i should get up to speed on that, then [15:00] well, I have to leave, but good luck log` [15:00] thanks, enjoy! :) [15:16] hah, this is quite the adventure I'm on. The update to nvidia-370 caused my system to fail to boot with just a flashing screen and no way to drop into a terminal with Ctrl+F* [15:16] so I booted into the previous kernel and removed nvidia-370, which I assume caused everything to fall back to more generic drivers [15:16] because now, the VGA monitor that was not working before is working [15:17] but the DisplayPort monitor that _was_ working has stopped [15:18] let's try 367 [15:48] For multiseax in kubuntu 16xx lts, should this file be edited? /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc ? BluesKaj ? === Blackadder is now known as Blackadderrr [16:41] Hello, is there any way to disable the delay of the panel menu? You know, when selecting other submenus there is a delay. [16:42] Like when going from Favorites to Applications to Computer [16:43] delay...how long ? [16:43] less than a second [16:44] I mean what is it now? [16:45] 200 ms or something [16:45] It's not lag, it's designed, or at least it feels that way [16:46] delay here less than 20ms I'm sure [16:46] But I want my mouse movements to instantly affect the menu [16:47] Everything is instant except for that [16:48] It's making me crazy [16:48] which plasma version , Blackadderrr? [16:48] plasmashell -v in the cli [16:50] and kubuntu version [16:51] plasmashell 5.5.5, kubuntu xenial 16.04 [16:52] and your packages are all up to date ? [16:53] I think not, running from a usb. Just to test kubuntu. I'm new to linux since today, and I'm trying out different distro's [16:54] So apparently it should be instant? [16:55] oh, well that delay is probly a result of usb transfer speed . [16:56] anyway you'll notice an increase in speed if you install to a sata drive [16:56] Doubtful [16:57] time to go ... stuff to do [16:57] I'm seeing it also. It's standard, and from what I know, can't be adjusted. [16:57] Used to be an animation speed option in Desktop Effects, but that's gone now. [16:58] Damn [16:58] not here , I'm testing 17.04 with plasma 5.7.5 [16:58] anyway...later [16:58] thank you [16:58] Gonna install it on a different drive [16:59] Cause everything is perfect except for that [17:12] Sometime recently (not 100% when) KMail stopped properly rendering HTML mail. Mostly, graphics don't show up (but not all mails). I have KMail configured to load external resources in HTML mails. Thsi is KMail 5.1.3, KDE Frameworks 5.23.0 [17:12] Anybody seen something similar? [17:17] Ah, appears there is a thread about it. [17:31] Ah, the command is "apt clean". I wonder why that command is not in the man page. [17:45] what other file do I need to modify for multiseatx besides /etc/X11/xorg.conf for kubuntu 16.xx LTS? [17:45] IrcsomeBot: I asked about Kmail, Donald_ET3 asked about installing a package. You told me to install packages manually. :) [17:46] Sircle: Perhaps consult https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MultiseatTeam/Instructions [17:48] genii: have you ever done it correctly? [17:49] Sircle: I tinkered with multiseat when *buntu was at version 12.04 but not since. I did manage at that time to get it going for 4 seats [17:53] genii: did you use this link same? [17:53] genii: why not just use sudo loginctl attach seat1 /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0/drm/card1 [17:54] Because I didn't know about loginctl [17:55] ...and no, the multiseat instructions I pointed you at did not exist at that time. I followed different ones which were not specific to *buntu [18:56] genii: what files are needed for multiseat? xorg.conf and whats the other? theres a confusion in kdmrc or lightdm etc. which one to go for? what else? What if I am unable to see screen after reboot. Recovery mode does not lets me edit/remove xorg as it says filesystem is readonly. I am lost. [18:58] Sircle: to write in recovery, first: mount -o remount,rw -a [18:59] k [18:59] genii: in recovery mode or write before that? [19:00] In recovery mode [19:00] k [19:00] Sircle: It's been so long since I was investigating how to do multiseat setup that I'm probaly not much help for you with that part. [19:01] genii: np. [19:01] ..but if you get stuck on reboot where it drops you to recovery mode, that's how you can undo what you did before. [19:02] ( remount with read-write, make the changes, save and reboot again) [19:25] genii: thanks! [19:25] genii: does kubuntu uses kdm, gdm or something else? [19:25] sddm by default [19:26] genii: where do I put greeter etc? [19:27] I'm not sure what your question is [19:28] theres a greeter for multi seat. in some file [19:28] perhaps I should read few docs first [19:29] That's probably a good idea :) [19:29] k [19:31] Sircle: You can always switch the greeter from sddm to lightdm, if there's better documentation for lightdm [19:31] Do not recommend kdm, it is not supported any more === ste is now known as Guest3219 [20:15] Hello everybody. The stability seems to decay after a few months. :/
