Earlier, the crontab entry didn't had `> /dev/null 2>&1` at the end, and it was not writing messages to log file. Once I appended `/dev/null 2>&1`, it started writing messages to the log. I read about the purpose of /dev/null here http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/119648/redirecting-to-dev-null, but I don't understand why it is required to write into the log09:11

PiciYiota: thanks for the help here :)14:34
rohanYiota: Ok. what did you mean for me to do when you said append to the end of the path?14:34
Yiotaif you install both, 'python' will point to the latest anaconda that was installed14:34
Yiotaso if you want 'python' to point to either conda2 or conda3 you have to make sure it's the last path in your path var14:35
Yiotaotherwise, simply alias them14:35

ppfnacc: the question is, can i safely boot that initramfs?16:14
Joe2016Hey, I am currently looking to build a X99 Ubuntu 16.04 build with a 6800K what motherboard should i get. Worried about compatiblity problems16:14
naccppf: yes, that's *exactly* my point16:14
naccppf: that's current upstream16:14
naccppf: xenial has: https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/i915?id=b2deae592adde46eadfc8fe1f7841d0f13f16ee516:14
andrebordaEriC^^: doesn't help. do you by chance know the input needed to get to deeper search from there?16:15
naccppf: which doesn't contain the ver6, but ver416:15
sankayopIt's my first try on irc and I would actually like to access the django irc channel...  I'm using xchat on ubuntu. Does anybody have some time to give me some tip ? Thanks16:15
EriC^^andreborda: press q a couple times16:15
naccppf: presumably, someone who cares *may* be working on updating this, but it takes careful work to not break anyone's system16:15
andrebordaEriC^^: I guess if i quit it'll take me to the results16:15
naccppf: what initramfs?16:15
ppfnacc: how did you mach that commit to the xenial version?16:15
andrebordaEriC^^: awesome, running deeper search16:15
ppfnacc: the one who's generation raised that warning16:16
naccppf: well, you didn't have the firmware to begin with16:16
naccppf: so it can't be an issue, afaict?16:16
zeer0Hi, I'm struggling to startx after installing 16.10 this seems something to do with systemd not being able to get session PID 3778 which does not belong to any known session. Does anyone have any ideas to go about fixing this? Thanks16:16
poopBotso no Opera in repo?16:16
ppfnacc: can the missing firmware be an issue?16:16
naccppf: looked at `apt-get changelog linux-firmware) for the first xenial version, which refers to which upstream commit it used16:16
andrebordaEriC^^: Now it seems there are 2 similar partitions, both still the 34Gb http://imgur.com/a/1bpqi16:16

EriC^^andreborda: i'm not too sure about that16:18
sankayopkeviv: thanks but unfortunately, nothing is happening...16:19
ppfnacc: it doesn't16:19
andrebordaEriC^^: I think it might be possible that the disk creation tool that created this mess might have run/formatted more than once16:19
EriC^^andreborda: usually there are backup partitions at the end of the disk so in the cloned one it would be in the 3/4 or something i guess not sure about the whole idea16:19
kevivsankayop: does anything show up in the status/server window? You might need to be registered for that channel16:19
naccppf: then why do you care about the graphics firmware? :)16:19
EriC^^andreborda: it's still worth a shot running testdisk on the original disk, nothing bad should happen you don't even have to mount it16:19
archer121Hey, I have downloaded a kernel module and it is to me compiled against /lib/modules/3.2.2+/. Here is the makefile: https://github.com/richygerard/file-encryption-decryption/blob/master/Makefile So how do I install the headers?16:20
andrebordaEriC^^: I'll run it now on the clone, and after, if no luck, redo on the OG16:20
ppfnacc: i don't care about the firmware, the questions if the initramfs will fail to boot16:20
sankayopkeviv: indeed ! I just found that info ;) Do you know where to register ?16:21
naccppf: but why would it fail to boot?16:21
naccppf: you *already* are using initramfs without that firmware16:21
naccppf: and it's specifically for your graphics card16:21
naccppf: which you aren't using? :)16:22
kevivsankayop: https://freenode.net/kb/answer/registration16:22
poopBothow to check graphick card, on arch i could mhwd-gpu --check16:22
sankayopkeviv: thanks a lot, I'll give it a try16:23

Joe2016anyone here can help a newbie with x99 build?16:23
naccppf: so confused. Why do you need the firmware if you're not using graphics? Or by 'someone' do you mean update-initramfs or some driver?16:23
ktt9Hi. Does do-release-upgrade have some hooks that will run before final reboot?16:23
kevivSo 16.04 won't start lightdm now. It enters emergency mode and trying to start lightdm or gdm3 just goes straight back to emergency mode. Tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. Most answers online say to use fsck. I don't have a live usb right now, anything else I can try?16:23
ppfnacc: update-initramfs16:23
ktt9Still no luck with automatic upstart/systemd job->service migration.16:24
naccppf: well, yes, drivers search for all possible firmware. If they really needed them to operate, i'm guessing it would be a fatal error not a warning16:24
ppfalright, makes sense :)16:24
pedrocrppf: I also noticed that when doing some changes that required update-initramfs16:25
pedrocrppf: it boots just fine though16:25
pedrocrand this is a laptop that does indeed use graphics :)16:25
zero_i16:25
naccppf: and my point stands, i think, this isn't 'new' -- you maybe just ignored the warning before16:26
ppfnacc: so what would initramfs do if i were using that module, would it fall back to an older version?16:26
spungeHey guys, i can't get alsa to output any sound on my ALC892 realtek chip. I've posted a question here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/844284/no-sound-on-ubuntu-16-04-with-realtek-alc892 Any help would be much appreciated!16:26
naccppf: it just wouldn't be able to use that firmware16:26
naccppf: it depends on the driver what it does and i'm not willing to go look :)16:26
naccppf: initramfs doesn't know if you are using the module or not; so it wouldn't do anything, fwiw16:27
ppfnacc: most of the time i don't watch the upgrades16:27

akik[_]`: that page mentions the same parse_vt_settings error18:11
akikbut on my 14.04 Xorg doesn't have the s bit18:12
scottg_Judging by this page it seems like for the most recent versions they have incremented the minor version http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/core/trusty/main/updates/nginx18:12

whygodwhyso, I have a thinkpad yoga 12 with secure boot and uefi and it refuses to boot from usb18:12
scottg_also what would cause it to change from 1ubuntu* to 2ubuntu*18:12
xXEoflaOEXx[_]`, If you ls /dev and you do not see tty0, then the tty0 is not found18:12
[_]`xXEoflaOEXx: yes i understant18:13

akik[_]`: you can change the resolution later18:14
[_]`oops i pressedd ctrl alt f1 and lost it, but i had my normal desktop before that18:14
[_]`let me reboot18:14
akik[_]`: ctrl+alt+f7 brings it back18:14
brainwashscottg_: ubuntu imports packages from debian. if they change the package, then ubuntu1 is appended to the version string. if they change it again, then ubuntu2 and so on.18:15
[_]`oh nice, that works. akik yeah i see my desktop with all low resolution18:15
whygodwhytried using different usb sticks, different ports, turning off secure boot and put uefi in legacy. One annoying thing is that it returns to secure and uefi when i reboot anyway18:15
[_]`akik: what should i do now?18:15
akik[_]`: check if you're using the nvidia kernel module "sudo lshw -c video"18:16
xXEoflaOEXx[_]`, What is the resolution, your answer should follow this pattern like this: 640x48018:16
[_]`xXEoflaOEXx: i dont know my resolution18:16
[_]`akik: i can't get to my terminal its outside of the visible screen :s i only see the files on my desktop not the side or top menu bars18:16
brainwashscottg_: that happens during the development phase of a new ubuntu release. if they need to apply some security fix or important update after release, then they use ubuntu2.1, ubuntu2.2,..18:16
akik[_]`: how about alt+f2 do you see that box18:17
scottg_brainwash: so that's ubuntu applying the security update?18:17
xXEoflaOEXx[_]`: What is your monitor model?18:17

brainwashscottg_: yes18:18
[_]`i can rightclick -> change desktop background but the part i need is outside of screen18:18
xXEoflaOEXx[_]`: What desktop environment is installed?18:19
brainwashscottg_: there are special cases like firefox though18:19
scottg_brainwash: ok thanks!18:19
scottg_also out of curiosity, when does the leading number change?18:19
scottg_like 1ubuntu18:19
akik[_]`: there's a trick to move windows, you can press alt and mouse left button to grab a window from any place18:19
[_]`xXEoflaOEXx: unsure, what ever was default with ubuntu 14.0418:19
brainwashscottg_: when debian applies changes to an existing package18:20
[_]`akik: nice that tricks seems to work18:20
xXEoflaOEXx[_]`: You meant Unity?18:20
akikheh18:20
brainwashscottg_: ubuntu imports packages from debian18:20
scottg_brainwash: I thought you said earlier that when debian makes a change they change the trailing number (ubuntu1, ubuntu2, etc)?18:20
scottg_I don't think I'm understanding the distinction between those18:21
brainwashscottg_: that's ubuntu18:21
scottg_ah ok18:21
[_]`akik: i got to All Settings -> Display whre the resolution says 640x480 (4:3) but the drop down menu has no other options18:21
brainwashscottg_: hence they append the ubuntuX string18:21
scottg_brainwash: what sort of changes do distros make to packages?18:22
scottg_like do they make bug fixes themselves? (other than security patches)18:22
superkuhHm. debsums says no system libs were corrupted. It must be something else config file wise causing segfaults.18:23
akik[_]`: what about "sudo lshw -c video" it should say driver=something18:23
xXEoflaOEXxI have a known bug that the old-releases.ubuntu.com still ships the torrent versions of 8.04 (and maybe other versions), but it does not work because the file in the torrent tracker was no longer found.18:23
[_]`should i just ctrl + alt + f2 and use that command line? akik18:23
akik[_]`: no, in the gui18:23
brainwashscottg_: they apply patches from upstream to their packages if needed, or change the configuration for debian/ubuntu18:24
[_]`akik: i dont know how to open a terminal in the gui since i cant get to the left edge menu :s18:24
akik[_]`: try moving the windows with the alt trick18:24
scottg_brainwash: Sorry, I find all this complicated and interesting. I would think they would just bring in the developers new version for bug fixes like that18:25
[_]`akik: does work, the rightclick -> change background windows moves but the the desktop18:25

boreiam i missing something ?18:26
xXEoflaOEXx[_]`, What graphics card you have?18:27
brainwashscottg_: that's not possible in all cases. sometimes the newest version of a software has not been packaged yet, or needs more testing. then the package maintainer needs to apply critical fixes to the existing package.18:27
boreii can dig that hostname against DNS/DHCP server im using (dnsmasq)18:27

[_]`dpkg -l | grep nvidia gives nothing , akik18:29
desnesnI already came from Fedora 24, and ubuntu 16.04.1, because on these it would simply not work at all. Now with 16.10, I am able to install it, even via gui (System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers).18:29
desnesnIt worked perfectly for a day, then it crashed ... and aftewards, I can only boot into black screen (I can hear the startup sound), but ctrl + alt + F1 does not give me a console screen. What I usually have to do to reach a terminal through normal boot is use "nomodeset" in the kernel line, which does not let me use the UI (correct user+passwd don't work), but on the other hand this let's me ctrl + alt + F118:29
xXEoflaOEXx[_]`, Please post the output of dmesg | grep nvidia, but use pastebin18:29
desnesninto a terminal.18:29
desnesnAfter reading the instruction from ubuntu/nvidia https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia, I tried using Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP" on the Section Screen for nvidia in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but that didn't work. I also tried again that, but also runned nvidia-xconfig: didn't work. I tried blacklisting nouveau and other buffers (vga16fb, nouveau, rivafb, rivatv), that didn't work. I also18:29
desnesntried turning nouveau off on the kernel command line, but that didn't work; turning nouveau off and also nvidia on ... didn't work.18:29

scottg_in which case should I use 1.4.6*18:44
naccscottg_: what areyou trying to do?18:44
naccscottg_: and no, there is guarantee the full string of a version will match again (in fact it needs to be sequential)18:45
scottg_nacc: Basically the problem I ran into was that in my configuration management I was specifying I wanted the version nginx=1.4.6-1ubuntu3.5 and it was replaced by *3.718:45

scottg_I really just wanted 1.4.6 (I think)18:46

Razvalordcirth I agree, but no idea what setting is the one that routes... :|21:48
lordcirthRazva, do you just need to connect eth0 to vmbr0, or do you need static routes?21:50
Razvajust need to connect eth to vmbr21:50
Guest85161someone knows spacemacs?21:51
lordcirthRazva, I did that once a while ago, one sec21:52
lordcirthRazva, can you pastebin your /etc/network/interfaces?21:52

Razvahttp://hastebin.com/equdahebub.css21:53
lordcirthRazva, oh, OpenVSwitch?  That's different21:54
lordcirthRazva, try adding to vmbr0 , ' ovs_ports eth0 '21:55

lionamplifierhi, quick question here, i want to mount an iso file as a regular/non root user with options, the mount command will not let me do so. i looked into fuseiso but it does not let me specify options. what is the best way to go about doing this?21:55
ThePotatohow do i dual boot ubuntu with ubuntu on a seperate harddrive21:56
lordcirthlionamplifier, do you trust the non-root user?  Like, is it convenience or security?21:56
lionamplifierthe non root user is me, it is just a hiccup with wine21:57
Ben64you have to use sudo21:57
lordcirthThePotato, you install the second Ubuntu, and either install it's version of Grub, or go back to the previous, make sure os-prober is installed, and update-grub21:57
Bashing-omThePotato: Just install to that 2nd hard drive as you would . Maybe disable grub-probe in the secondary system .21:57
lordcirthlionamplifier, you can use visudo to allow your user to run 'mount' with passwordless sudo21:58
ThePotatocould either of you explain that in easier to understand terms21:58
Razvalordcirth http://hastebin.com/lecagofoqi.css21:59
ThePotatocould i not just use the install along with windows21:59
lordcirthThePotato, I thought you said you wanted to dual-boot 2 copies of Ubuntu21:59
Ben64ThePotato: you indicated booting two versions of ubuntu21:59
Bashing-omThePotato: I can only tell you waht I would do ( or have done) . Your system, your end goals . You state what the end goal is .22:00
OerHeksThePotato, change bootdevice in your bios22:00
blackflowThePotato: if it's anotehr drive, there's nothing special to do. enable your bios' boot menu and that's it22:00

ubottuDebian bug 822279 in kdenlive "kdenlive: missing dependency" [Grave,Fixed]22:10
lionamplifieri ran the root command as passwordless sudo as suggested but the file in question once the mount command is performed gives the error "No such file or directory" when i attempt to do anything with it22:10
CountryfiedLinuxok OerHeks thanks22:11
lionamplifierthe file in also says it belongs to a user "502" in the group "dialout" when i do an ls -l command on the entire directory(and appears there)22:11
CountryfiedLinuxOerHeks, Is it likely to be fixed soon?22:11
prometI am fiddling with Lubuntu, and have super distorted audio in some web-based video in the latest firefox, but excellent audio in other video tabs, e.g. Youtube works fine. Has anyone seen a similar issue?22:11
CountryfiedLinuxAlso noticed Kdenlive isn't showing up in Software. It shows in App Grid though.22:12
OerHeksCountryfiedLinux, some messages say it *is* fixed, some other posts give no clu, you miss qt5-qtquickcontrols qt5-qttools i think22:14
OerHeksfrom last post on https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=265&t=130259&start=3022:14
blackflowlionamplifier: did you copy it from another system where user 502 made sense? also, what's the mount command you're trying?22:14
OerHeks"i ran the root command as passwordless sudo as suggested " makes me shiver22:15
lionamplifieri meant to say mount command :P22:15
lionamplifierthe command is mount -t iso9660 Komplete_8.iso ~/virtualdrive/Drive0 -o map=off,block=2048,loop22:16
squarecircleohai. I need some helf. I killed a check_mk/omd installation with aptitude safe-upgrade. And now its saying "  Package mysql-server-5.5 is not configured yet.22:17
squarecirclethere are mysql databases on the system and I can't just purge all of mysql because then I guess, I would delete the dbs too22:18
squarecircleI'm happy about all the help I can get22:18
lordcirthlionamplifier, you might not want to use '~' with sudo.  Try using the real path22:18
lionamplifieralright22:18
CountryfiedLinuxIs Kdenlive not listed in Software because it's currently buggy or did they just stop putting it in the Software to be seen?22:19
lordcirthCountryfiedLinux, I've no idea what the logic for software center is.  I've never seen any reason to use it, either22:20
lionamplifieri used the real path and it has the same issue22:20
