Guest1796Hello, seb128. Last night (my time), I had a discussion with attente about a global menu issue I'm facing. He (?) told me to talk to you today.11:52
Guest1796I've been running apps in containers like the ones made by Libertine for some time now. As long as the containers can access the host's DBus socket, global menu works fine for gtk2 apps, but gtk3 apps continue to have a dedicated menu bar.11:54
Guest1796To make the matter more complicated, some gtk3 apps does do the global menu fine. By the suggesstions of attente, I installed dconf-editor and nautilus. Those apps' seem to integrate perfectly with global menu. Other apps, that I want to run in containers, like Firefox and Eclipse, don't do the global menu.11:57

seb128good if attente figured it out ;-)12:23

seb128flexiondotorg, let me have a look14:24
flexiondotorgseb128, See the GTK warnings here - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/deja-dup/+bug/1623835/comments/214:28
ubot5`Ubuntu bug 1623835 in deja-dup (Ubuntu) "Updated gtk element means you need to specify a size on the details drop down or it is only 1 line high" [Low,Triaged]14:28
flexiondotorgseb128, And here is the GTK inspector info - http://imgur.com/a/05gRH14:30
seb128flexiondotorg, in what file is the ui described?14:31
flexiondotorgI was just about to start looking at that.14:31
flexiondotorgseb128, You'll remember I said the Deja Dup issue is the same?14:31
seb128yes, which still seems weird ot me14:32
flexiondotorgThe reason is, the first action Deja Dup performs is to install some plugins using aptdaemon.14:32
seb128ah right14:33
seb128well deja-dup has the same issue on its backup view14:33
flexiondotorgAh, OK.14:33
Guest76787attente: I see, thank you.14:33
seb128flexiondotorg, step 1 is to find where the UI is described14:35
flexiondotorgGot the three .ui files open.14:35
seb128they are from aptdaemon ?14:35
flexiondotorgYes.14:36
seb128flexiondotorg, k, found an easy way to reproduce, the aptdaemon source has a gtk3-demo.py small ui which does it14:40
flexiondotorgThanks.14:41
seb128flexiondotorg, that seems to fix it14:45
seb128flexiondotorg, http://paste.ubuntu.com/23416391/14:46
flexiondotorgseb128, Thanks.14:47
flexiondotorgWhat was your process of get to that?14:48
seb128looked at bugzilla.gnome.org bugs since march which mention size or height issues in their title/descriptions14:49
seb128also the error your shared14:50
seb128to try to poke around to see if others had similar issues and how they solved it14:50
seb128there were some suggestion to tweak min content size on scrolled windows14:50
seb128so I grepped aptdaemon's source for scroll14:50
flexiondotorgRight, OK.14:51
seb128that gave me 1 source/section14:51
flexiondotorgUnderstood.14:51
seb128then I tried the tweak14:51
seb128I'm not sure it's the right/correct/only solution but that should go14:51
flexiondotorgSo I've notice the aptdaemon gtk3 widgets are using deprecated GtkVBox and GtkHBox.14:51
seb128gtk geometry allocation and why things behaves differently between versions is always weird to me14:51
flexiondotorgIs that worth addressing?14:52
flexiondotorgseb128, Thanks for the time.14:52
seb128yw!14:52
flexiondotorgI can test futher.14:52
seb128I wouldn't bother porting aptdaemon to modern gtk14:52
seb128it works with current gtk3 which isn't going to change14:53
flexiondotorgAnd also use what I learned to work on Deja Dup backup.14:53
seb128if we invest work is likely going to drop aptdaemon and just use packagekit14:53
seb128flexiondotorg, thanks14:53
flexiondotorgseb128, Yep, I agree about leaving aptdaemon widget on gtk3.14:53
flexiondotorgI did remove the HBox and VBox deprecations from some MATE bits, but ultimately didn't gain anything other than soothing my OCD.14:54
seb128flexiondotorg, just for extra infa, https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=771743 was the bug that hinted me to try to min-content-height tweak14:54
ubot5`Gnome bug 771743 in Mouse "Mouse panel very small when touchpad is present, on Wayland" [Normal,Resolved: fixed]14:54
flexiondotorgseb128, I've also looked at the zebra striping bug.14:54
seb128what was that one again?14:55
flexiondotorgThere is an patch available, that could be refactored.14:55
seb128oh the list one14:55
flexiondotorghttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-themes/+bug/94543014:55
ubot5`Ubuntu bug 945430 in ubuntu-themes (Ubuntu) "Lists lack zebra-striping" [Low,Triaged]14:55
seb128right14:55
seb128would be nice to fix but that's probably not a priority14:55
flexiondotorgThe patch has been reviewed and updated upstream a few times, but not accepted yet.14:55
seb128I wouldn't invest too much effort into it14:55
flexiondotorgOK, I'll have a stab at it one evening.14:56
seb128thanks14:56
seb128annoying but typical example of GTK upstream :-/14:57
seb128"I didn't much time thinking about the removal at the time because none of the themes seemed to use it..."14:57
flexiondotorgseb128, The patch add new selectors.14:57
flexiondotorgSo themes would have to change as well.14:57
seb128right14:57
flexiondotorgThe existing theme syntax is no longer valid.14:58
seb128well, would it change look on an unmodified theme?14:58
seb128oh, that's more annoying14:58
flexiondotorgIt does require a patch and theme change to reinstate stripes.14:58
flexiondotorgWhich may be good enough reason to not prioritise it?14:59
seb128it's a regression in 16.10 only right?14:59
flexiondotorgWhat the striping?15:01
seb128the bug is a bit confusing15:01
seb128it says gtk 3.18 allowed to do that but 3.19 removed the option15:01
seb128unsure our theme was using the feature in 3.18/16.04 though15:02
seb128the launchpad bug suggests it wasn't15:02
flexiondotorgI think striping is missing from 16.04 too. Just double checking some themes...15:02
seb128https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=757495 first comment suggests that 3.18 made it possible at least15:03
ubot5`Gnome bug 757495 in Widget: GtkTreeView "GtkTreeView odd/even row styling no longer works" [Normal,New]15:03
andyrockseb128, Laney, Trevinho this should fix the issue (works on X, i'm checking it on Y)15:03
seb128andyrock, "this"?15:03
flexiondotorgStripes missing on my 16.04.15:03
andyrocki assume using /org/freedesktop/login1/user/self is safe15:03
andyrockhttps://code.launchpad.net/~azzar1/unity/fix-double-lock/+merge/30985915:03
seb128andyrock, using user/self makes sense to me15:04
LaneyNever heard of that15:04
Laneyis it documented?15:04
andyrockdunno15:04
andyrockbut I'll check if it works properly15:04
LaneyI mean is it guaranteed to not be randomly removed?15:05
flexiondotorgseb128, Sould the update-manager fix be SRUd to Yakkety also?15:05
Laneythere's no mention of 'self' in https://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/logind/15:05
seb128flexiondotorg, my understanding is that gtk 3.18 was making it possible and 3.19 removed the support for it, so basically we could probably add it back to the lts by tweaking the theme15:06
seb128where > 16.10 would be more work15:06
seb128flexiondotorg, I wouldn't bother looking at it for > 3.18, not high priority enough, might be a nice SRU for the LTS if it's an easy tweak but again a low priority/friday afternoon thing15:07
flexiondotorgseb128, I'll double check the theme but I'm sure I've seen the appropriate styling that should enable it.15:08
flexiondotorgFor 16.04.15:08
LaneyI don't know that you can do it for treeview rows with 3.2015:08

* Laney does a Very British Hard Stare15:09
seb128you probably can't15:09
LaneyHe's withered to nothing15:09
LaneySuccess15:09
seb128that's what the bugzilla bug I pointed before says15:09
LaneyYeah I think you'd need to add some style classes or something15:09
seb128Company removed the option because he though noone was using it15:09
Laneyah yes15:09
Laneythere's a patch but it's not finished / committed15:09
seb128right15:09
Laneyso we could restore it once that is done15:10
* Laney subscribez15:10
seb128yeah15:10
seb128I doubt they are going to do much work/changes on gtk3 now though15:10
Laneyshrug15:10
Laneyfind out at the time15:10
seb128Laney, does http://paste.ubuntu.com/23416391/ looks like right or a hack to you? (that fixes the update-manager details scrollview being not having enough height)15:11
Laneyseb128: I think you need something like that now15:11
andyrockok I double checked15:11
Laneywhere did 300 come from?15:11
andyrocktwo different users logged at same time15:12
seb128just me trying a random value to see if the call makes a difference15:12
seb128which is does15:12
andyrockuser/self points to differents objects15:12
andyrockshould be fine15:12
seb128I don't like to add fixed values though15:12
seb128would be nice if GTK was clever enough to fit to the space available as it used to do :-/15:12
Laneyandyrock: but is it part of the API?15:13
Laneyhow did you find out about it?15:13
seb128andyrock, I think Laney's point was that it might go away in a systemd update if it's not properly documented15:13
seb128so we shouldn't rely on it15:13
seb128or get upstream to document it as officially supported15:13
andyrockah...15:16
andyrockis there a freenode channel for systemd15:16
Guest76787andyrock: Yea, it's #systemd.15:17
seb128if you use get at least a test15:17
seb128so the day systemd change we get something flagged red15:17
=== didrocks1 is now known as didrocks
andyrockseb128: adding such a test in our framework is hard15:20
andyrockwe don't rely on real-world dbus15:21
seb128talk to #systemd upstream and see what they say15:21
andyrockmaybe inside cmake we can do something15:21
seb128andyrock, but at the same time getting the uid is easy and that's probably supported/stable15:23
andyrocki know but self is nicer :P15:23
Laneyandyrock: Also, ew15:26
Laneyuse the second part of the tuple instead of string concatenation on the session id15:26
andyrockmmm15:27
andyrockdunno in this case is going to be a bit harder to still support XDG_SESSION_ID15:27
andyrockmaybe not15:27
andyrocki'll update the branch15:27
Laneyin that case you should be using GetSession IMHO15:28
andyrockI can use the second part still supporting XDG_SESSION_ID15:29
andyrocki'm pretty sure Trevinho will not accept deprecating XDG_SESSION_ID15:29
Laneynah, I'm saying that in this case you should be calling org.freedesktop.login1.Manager GetSession (XDG_SESSION_ID) to get the object path15:30
andyrockah... we likely did like that because our dbus api is async and it's not always trivial to get dbus properties15:32
Laneythe risk is that the implementation changes one day and breaks you15:33
Laneysame as the other case15:33
Laney:P15:33
andyrocklet's see if Trevinho still wants the XDG_SESSION_ID thing15:34
andyrockmaybe he's using it in some scripts15:34
andyrockotherwise it's easier to remove that code path15:34
* andyrock 's day is almost over and he wants to propose it before eod15:35
flexiondotorgseb128, The default scrolled window sized in 16.04 was 200px. So I'll use that.15:37
seb128flexiondotorg, wfm, the 300 value was a random test, I played around a bit and was leaning toward 180px15:38
seb128so you are close15:38
flexiondotorgI measured it ;-)15:38
flexiondotorgapt install screenruler15:38
seb128:-)15:38
seb128I didn't look at deja-dup but I expect it's going to be a similar issue15:39
LaneyThere's a case in update-manager too if you weren't already aware15:39
Laneythe "technical description" bit15:39
flexiondotorgLaney, Yep. Saw that.15:40
Laneyok15:40
flexiondotorgThanks for the prompt though.15:40
flexiondotorgDeja Dup is the same issue.15:40
seb128that was expected ;-)15:41
seb128unsure if we should bother SRUing those to yakkety15:41
LaneyI would, shouldn't be hard15:42
flexiondotorgI'm happy to.15:42
flexiondotorgJust a case of merge proposals for Zesty and debdiffs for Yakkety, right?15:42
LaneyIf you want, or you can do MPs for both (I can push the branches to ubuntu-yakkety)15:45
flexiondotorgI've not done a MP for a prior release before.15:46
flexiondotorgWhat branch to I merge to?15:46
LaneyJust change Vcs-Bzr15:46
flexiondotorgs/to/do/15:46
LaneyI think it needs to exist to make a proposal to it - that's what I just offered to do15:46
Laneybzr branch ...; bzr push ...-yakkety15:47
flexiondotorgOK15:47
seb128your call for the SRUs, it has a small work cost between upload/review/test and it's a non LTS and only cosmetic issues15:48
seb128but polish is always nice15:48
Laneyflexiondotorg: created lp:~ubuntu-desktop/deja-dup/ubuntu-yakkety and lp:~ubuntu-core-dev/update-manager/yakkety - doesn't look like aptdaemon has one (no Vcs-Bzr at least)15:53
flexiondotorgLaney, thanks.15:54
* Laney spends his last £115:55
sarnoldLaney: perhaps relevant :) http://hyperallergic.com/299912/the-photographers-of-1870s-london-who-documented-their-disappearing-city/15:56
Laneysarnold: you calling me an old relic?16:02
sarnoldLaney: hehe, no :) it just triggered the "wow london is old" feeling..16:03
LaneyAh, my quaint old currency16:06
Laneyhere we're suffering the consequences of 1970s architectural vandalism16:07
* Laney stabs the Broadmarsh centre16:08
willcookeLaney, did the Snenton market revamp ever get finished?16:13
willcooke*Sneinton16:13
andyrockhttps://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/1oiH3TZr/16:14
andyrockLaney: ok in this way I use GetSession and also fallback to the old one in case it fails16:15
Laneywillcooke: yep, there's a nice fountain there now16:16
Laneynot sure it's quite as successful as they hoped it would be16:16
Laneyalso some artist studios and stuff where there used to be veg wholesalers and the like16:16
Laneysome kind of cultural cleansing16:17
Laneythey call it the 'creative quarter'16:17
Laneyincludes hockley & lace market too16:17
Laneyandyrock: nice16:18
Laneydid #systemd answer you about the /org/freedesktop/login1/user/self thing?16:18
andyrocknope16:46
andyrockbut it's eod for me16:46
Laneyahhh16:46
Laneysorry for raising issues :(16:46
andyrockahah thanks for the help16:46
andyrockbtw I think it's not a freedesktop.login1 thing16:47
andyrockjust a systemd login116:47
Laneyque?16:48
andyrockthe /self thing16:51
andyrockare there other implementations of freedesktop.login1?16:51
Laneydon't think so16:52
LaneyI would hope to see it on https://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/logind/ if it is guaranteed16:52
Laneythat documents everything else on the interfaces16:52
Guest76787seb128: Sorry, you were right, jayatana is installed by default. But it still doesn't solve the Eclipse issue.16:52
andyrockLaney: I asked on #systemd but silence16:53
andyrockthey don't know me16:53
Laneythey should16:53
Laneyyou're a big deal!16:53
seb128andyrock, try asking p_itti in email if you are in contact with him16:53
seb128he knows who to ask16:54
andyrockseb128: he just answerd in the bug proposing a similar solution16:57
andyrockbut with the getUser thing16:58
seb128k16:58
andyrockthe problem with getUser is that we need to provide fallbacks inside the code16:58
andyrockand fallbacks make the code longer16:58
andyrockbtw I asked him if this is stable or not16:58
seb128good16:59
andyrockor iìll just use systemd lib17:05
andyrockif it's ok for you17:05
andyrockseb128: ^^ì17:05
seb128wfm17:05
seb128whatever is easier for you17:05
andyrocki mean the code is already there17:06
andyrockbut tomorrow i'll port the code to systemd lib17:06
