sintrehi gav00:00
sintre<me facing hdmi issues with new notebook00:00
sintre:)00:00
sintredarin> what and how do i install new driver packages into kubuntu00:01
sintrefrom the intel site00:01
DarinMillersintre: Looking on the Intel website, forum comments suggest 16.04 has the current latest drivers.  What is the model/year of your laptop?00:04
sintrehttp://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/inspiron-15-3558-laptop/fncwc105sb00:04
sintre355800:04
sintrebought its 18tgh of last month00:04
sintre18th00:04
DarinMillersintre: I really suspect Plasma 5.6 is a big part of your problem.  Do you know how to install the backports ppa?00:05
DarinMillersintre: I can guide you through it if needed.00:05
sintrenope00:05
sintresure i can go grab new note book and tyupe with you on this one00:05
sintrebrb00:05
DarinMillersintre: not much note taking needed, from a terminal: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports00:06
DarinMillersintre: follow with: sudo apt update00:06
sintreone sec booting new botebook00:07
DarinMillersintre: then: sudo apt full-upgrade00:07
sintreso this upgrades plsma?00:07
DarinMillersintre: yes, it will upgrade several Kubuntu packages including plasma.00:08
DarinMillersintre: so run those three commands and re-login or restart...00:09
sintrelol miss spelled one thing wrong here i go typing again lol00:10
sintrek went thru it00:13
sintreits now says 242 pqckages can be upgraded00:13
sintrewtf00:13
sintrewants me to list them all00:14
sintreanyway to upgrade all of them00:14
DarinMilleryes upgrade all.00:14
sintreohh saw your command one sec00:14
DarinMillerPlasma 5 is under heavy development.00:14
sintrek there she goes00:15
sintre2 min estimate , guess alot of pacjkages00:15
DarinMillerMany new features and bug fixes coming out every week.  The packages in 16.04 are months old.  It will take quite some work for the developers so backport current packages to 16.04, so to run the with the latest feature and fixes, you need to run more recent distro releases.00:16
sintrewell seems eve new release is old00:17
sintre16.1000:17
sintredoesn't have a update for this stuff in unbuntu either00:17
sintrethe like orignal ubuntu that is00:17
sintreits "unpacking now00:18
sintre"00:18
sintre35% boy does this have alot to unpack and install :)00:20
DarinMillersintre: yes, even 16.10 is a little old, but it does have newer packages and its easier for the developer to backport the new stuff that stagin for 17.04 into 16.10 than it is for 16.04.00:20
DarinMillersintre: Yes, this is a time when you really apreciate an SSD.00:21
sintrehe god man it took me 27 screwes and an hour to get to the fkin hdd on this new alppy00:21
sintrei've gone cracke da case but this was almost complet diesembly00:22
sintreminus two screes and a latce for the lcd screen00:22
sintreguess what you gotta endure for an extra quarter inch thinness00:22
sintreand being cheap hehe00:23
sintresucks though to upgrade ram i gotta buy new lv crap00:23
sintre135 instead of the old modules and 1.5 volts laying around00:23
sintrebut hey i got its for 350 , plus 17 dollar e gift card for new ram down the road00:24
sintre329 plus 20 tax00:24
sintreseems to be done and and konsole promt gonna reboot new lappy00:25
DarinMillerWow, most Dell's are not so much trouble.  I have seen that kind of chaso on HP laptops though.00:25
DarinMillerboot away.00:25
sintrelook at service manual i was like wtf00:25
sintrealmost all dells i've had 4 so far atleast allow you easy access to hdd and ram00:26
sintrewell new updated  and reboot fine00:26
sintregave me new start up wallpaper lol00:26
DarinMilleryes, same here.  My newest one has 1 screw to remove the entire back.  Access to ram, hdd, fans, wifi cards all under on big cover.00:27
sintreunfurtately my old/ new one for me was same thteee screws on back00:27
DarinMillerGood.  Now try the HDMI to see if it works better.  Note: the version you have is still buggy but much better than the prior.00:27
sintrebut this summer my ac unti got hit by lightning00:27
sintreand fucking hit the whole house with stacic electricyty00:28
sintredidn't think about the pc in my closet00:28
DarinMillerTook out your laptop?00:28
sintreyea because i was worried about my lights and ac00:28
sintrei was an idiot two months later i got to boot it mobo seems dead00:28
sintrefkin sucks 8 gigs rame 1.5 volt 2.5 ghz 3 gen 13 and barely fkin used00:29
sintrelappy was around 10 feet from lightning strike00:29
sintre, ballis for flourecent lights 35 feet00:30
sintreput so much energy in the metal ballist , it stop the lights from working00:30
sintretook them out let them dicharge for a few dasys and they worked00:30
sintredidn't think to do that with lappy00:30
sintre:(00:30
DarinMillerWow.00:31
sintreor i could tourtcher myself and hope something is "loose in there00:32
sintrebut not look for a super disesmbly atm00:32
sintrejust did one00:32
sintrewell with updates seem , fine but the liiving room tv in use atm so no way to test hmdi for awhile00:33
sintredo you know any command to becnh mark and make sure its running sata 300:33
DarinMillerHigh voltage typically does not knock anything loose on electric parts, more likely fried.00:34
sintreyea i i agree with that :(00:34
sintrei wanna part it out and send it at shipping cost maybe somebody might be able to use the parts00:34
sintrethe ram and maybe the batter00:35
DarinMillerPlasma should not crash anymore and dual monitor should work much better (not perfect but better).  The KDE devs are still fixing dual monitor in Plasma 5.8.3....00:35
sintrethis ssd survived , i tooked it out of the fried lappy00:35
sintregood to hear they're working on it00:35
GavinjbI have ditched windows 10 about amounth a go, I first tried Mint KDE, I liked it but there was some features I didint like and in the past week I have upgraded to Kubuntu 16.1000:44
vinnyjust to say ,,,,,dual monitor is still a PITA in plasma 5.8.3 ,,,,,,still prefers the right side of the main display and you may get a plasma crash if just plugging in and half to do a "plasmashell &" to restart plasma ,,,,,this on Neon  with a00:45
vinnycmd: Graphics:  Card NVIDIA GK104M [GeForce GTX 860M]00:46
vinnycmd:            Display Server X.Org 1.18.4 driver nvidia Resolution 1920x1080@60.01hz00:46
vinnycmd:            GLX Renderer GeForce GTX 860M/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version 4.5.0 NVIDIA 370.2800:46
sintrewell tried again with alppy and hdmi tv00:48
sintrelappy00:49
sintresame crap, shuts downs laptop scrwe automaticly00:49
sintrethen presents a 1/4th image on screen on tv00:49
sintreat left side lol00:49
sintrei guess its seting for duel displays is unfified rendering00:50
sintreunfified , but that won't work00:50
sintrelol00:50
sintresome bugs to say the least , but plasma didn't crash yet lol00:51
vinnycan you change the display resolution of the TV in system settings>display and monitor00:52
user|73244hello00:52
Gavinjbhi00:52
user|73244:)00:52
user|73244hi00:53
user|73244are you busy?00:53
Gavinjbhow are you00:53
GavinjbNope why00:53
user|73244i am fine00:53
user|73244Ok i have a query00:53
user|73244who can here speak Spanish?00:54
GavinjbI can use google translator as I only speak English00:54
user|73244oooh okey00:55
user|73244good00:55
user|73244well00:55
sintreok found dumb work around00:55
user|73244i have a homework00:55
sintreeven though when i plug in tv laptop is set to be primary display00:55
user|73244the homework is about00:56
sintreits shut laptop screen off and gives me one 1/4th of the scree on tv00:56
sintremove junk overand over and hit duplicated siplay on tv00:56
sintrenow its mirrowed00:56
sintrebut resolution on tv still horribly low00:56
user|73244mmmmm ??? TV??00:56
sintre35 in hdtv00:57
sintremanu scraptre00:57
user|73244ok bye, i dont have any idea what you talk00:57
Gavinjbis it in a Virtual Box setting?00:58
sintreit simply says unifed output00:59
sintreonly way to get them both to be on at same time without turning off notebook screen and giving tv a samll 1/4th box of screen01:00
sintrebut that in of itself is a challenge having to drage of boxes to small space on tv to get it to work01:00
sintrebut yea its 100% in far lowe resolution , than tv can do or notebook is doing01:01
sintrei hit break unified outputs it says it running in virtual 101:02
sintreok wtf this just worked01:04
rohanrhuhi01:04
sintrei went got the screens together in the little box01:04
rohanrhusystemd-r 15414 systemd-resolve   16u  IPv4 303381      0t0  TCP localhost:domain (LISTEN)01:04
rohanrhuhow can i disable systemd dns server01:05
sintreand checked the resolution01:05
sintreo each01:05
rohanrhui disabled dnsmasq01:05
sintrenow both are mirroed at their highest resolution01:05
rohanrhubut systemd-resolve is using 53 port01:05
sintreso this unfurtately doesn't work like out of box automaticly01:05
sintrelet me go check sound thru hdmi01:06
sintreok mistake i fixed resolution , but it turned into an extended display not a close lol01:07
sintreclone01:07
sintreohh well01:07
sintrewell i'm done on this project for the night01:11
sintreseems i can get an extended display on tv at its native resolution , but a not a clone display seems notebook screens resolution limits it for some reason01:12
sintrealso still have to littleraly unplug hdmi cable to get notebook screen back to working after i swtitch to tv01:13
sintrewell with time hopefully it'll work out :)01:13
sintrebut no plasma crashes so thats good01:13
DarinMillersintre: I suspect your laptop resolution is 1368x768 and your tv is probably 1920x1080. So if you unify the screens, the TV will run at lower resoution.  Sounds like the scaling is not working as it should if only a partial screen is displayed.01:15
sintreyep exactly01:15
sintretc high resolution01:15
sintreand that is exact resolution of my lappy and my tv :)01:16
sintreeven though i hated win 10 so much i did test it and it would output different resolutions01:16
sintreso i guess another thing for the multi monitor kde specialials hopefully to get to sometime01:16
sintre:)01:16
sintrealso it automaticly sends command to run on hdmi and shut down notebook screen , which make it impossible to configure anything without yanking out hdmi cable01:18
sintreprobally put more where on usb port last 5 hours tha i normally would in 6 months01:18
sintreno hard feelsing love kubuntu , just wish basic stuff worked out box a bit better01:18
sintreall i can contribute is some feedback :)01:19
vinnysintre: what is you GPU info01:20
sintreIntel® Core™ i3-5005U Processor (3M Cache, 2.00 GHz)01:20
DarinMillersintre: download neon and run  live boot and see if the latest plasma fixes you issue.  The new plasma is hopefully coming to kubuntu soon so thanks for being patient.01:21
sintregot a link for neon ?01:21
DarinMillerhttps://neon.kde.org/download01:21
sintregot it saved thx for link01:22
vinnyyou have intel CPU integrated graphics ?01:22
sintreshut new pc down for night01:22

sintreold one got fried by lightning :(01:22
sintrethis is like my dinasuar notebook i'm typing on now01:23
sintrewhopping 2 gigs ram core 2 duo01:23
sintre1.4 mhz01:23
sintrealthough it can funicion because i had a bestbuy coupon and a 120 gig ssd on sale lol01:24
sintregetting some life out of it still01:24
sintreand normally i can type better but these keys sticka  bit lol01:24
sayurhello01:40
sintrehi01:40
sayurhow use mobile broadband in plasma 501:41
sayuri can't find it01:41
sintrei'm a nocie user myself , but some guys that are alot more knowledgable seems to check chat once and awhile01:42
sintrenovice sry01:42
sintrefirst thing i'd do is just google that exact question and read some forums , in the meantime01:43
sintrehelped me with some configuration problems01:43
vinnyclick yor network icon in the system tray ,,,,,,click the icon to the far rite of the airplane icon ,,,in the settings window that should open click "add" ,,,select broadband01:47
user|28038my apologies, Im stuck with both Firefox and Chromium both asking me to install the latest Flashplayer. Im very novice to Linux but love it02:24
sintrewhen you installed you os did you check install unsuported extras?02:25
sintreor third party extras02:25
sintreif not go back and reinstall02:26
sintrei wish i knew the get command for you maybe somebody else here does , but i did that a few times trying out linux drove me mad , thats the reason why02:27
sintreprobally save you time if you are installing froma say flash drive 10 mins one check you missed and your good to go02:28
sintreactually here it is02:28
sintreopen comand terminal02:29
sintrecopy paste  sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras02:29
sintresudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras02:29
sintrethat should do it :)02:29

amichairsince upgrade to 16.10, something seems to eat up tons of RAM. How can I find it? free/htop show 13.6G in use, but the sume of RES is less than 3. There's also a tmpfs in ram but df shows 1.4G is used. Where is the other 8G going?07:47
valorieweird07:48
amichaireven if I add the full tmpfs size (6G), it doesn't add up07:50
amichairso the system is swapping all the time, getting hard to work with07:50
valorieI have 16.10, system activity, htop and top all show me the usual07:50
amichairvalorie: any suggestions how to investigate this? am I misinterpretting the numbers I see?07:51
valorieI find system activity (esc. + cntl) the best, actually07:51
amichairI just shut down all the big apps (firefox, chrome, thunderbird, pidgin, etc.). Hardly anything running, still shows 13.2G in use07:52
amichairand I think this has grown, last time I checked (yesterday or the day before) it was at 9+ (which is also way too much)07:52
amichairbut where is that RAM going?07:52
valorieuse system activity07:53
valoriethere are tabs to help you drill down07:53
amichairwhat's that?07:53
valoriecould be baloo?07:53
amichairyou mean system monitor?07:53
valoriein a new install, it runs for awhile, indexing07:53
valoriecontrol and escape07:54
valorietitle on the top is system activity07:54
amichairvalorie: how do I run it?07:54
amichairdoesn't come up in k menu07:55
valorie control + escape and it will pop up07:55
valorieit's built into plasma07:55
amichairgot it07:55
amichairshows the same as system monitor no?07:55
valorieI guess07:56
amichairunder memory I don't see anything that could amount to 13G07:56
valorieI like the different ways you can display info07:56
valoriein great detail07:56
amichairmaybe 2-307:56
amichairvalorie: you mean the drop down on the top right?07:57
valorieif you hover, there is more info07:57
amichairvalorie: nice, good to know07:57
valorieyes, and to the right (all processes) you can display in different ways07:57
amichairbut I don't see anything relevant at the moment :-)07:57
amichairvalorie: is there a way to check how much the kernel itself is using, or something else that might be hiding it?07:58
valoriehmmm, system processes07:59
valoriebut that seems broken down into a lot of different bits07:59
valoriesearching for kernel gives nothing07:59
valorieso I assume it is broken down08:00
valoriesystemd for instance sometimes takes a lot08:00
valoriemaybe when it is logging?08:00
valorienot sure08:00
valorieI have a beefy laptop so I rarely care08:00
amichairstrange, I see 10 bash processes, but have only 2 tabs in konsole, is that normal?08:01
valoriethat I don't know08:01
amichairah, and it shows 3 processes with konsole in the command (I see only one)08:02
valoriecrons?08:02
amichairone of them described as zombie08:02
amichairvalorie: oh, now I see the detailed memory info on right click menu... nice :-)08:03
valorieyeah08:03
valorieit's an excellent tool08:03
valorieI used to install monitor stuff08:03
valoriebut that's right there, always08:04
amichairso apparently I have a konsole that disappeared, any way to get back to it?08:04
valoriehmmm08:04
amichair(still doesn't account for memory, but something about this seems off as well)08:04
valorieI've heard that there is, using the terminal08:05
valoriebut I can't recall how08:05
valoriegoogle might help with that08:05
* valorie is headed to bed, sorry08:05
valoriebest of luck finding that incantation08:06
amichairvalorie: thanks08:08

atdprhsHi, I need to reset my kubuntu (16.04 Xenial)'s display configuration, I found this http://askubuntu.com/questions/223486/how-do-i-reset-my-display-settings-from-the-command-line , but I cannot delete/remove any old disconnected display10:59
atdprhseverytime I connect my kubuntu to any of the old display, the configurations, go wrong, I cannot even control the laptop anymore, I have to disconnect it11:00
atdprhsbecause of the black screen11:00
atdprhscan anyone plz help me out11:01
snypzAMD or nvidia graphics card?11:35
atdprhsnvideo11:38
atdprhsi just figured11:38
atdprhsI think i need to install the drivers for my card11:38
atdprhsnot sure how I can port this https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201408-15385/ to my laptop11:39
hateballatdprhs: remove ~/.local/share/kscreen/*11:46
hateballatdprhs: that's where each monitors settings are stored11:46
atdprhsI just did this11:47
atdprhsthanks hateball11:47
hateballatdprhs: and you should be able to install any missing proprietary drivers (like nvidia) with: sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall11:47
atdprhsbut what i'm concerned about, in my office, I get into the same problem of seeing the black screen when attaching the external monitors11:48
atdprhsI have about 2 additional monitors11:48
hateballatdprhs: 16.04 is not great with multimonitors, so you will likely want to upgrade using the backports ppa11:49
hateballatdprhs: to do that: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports && sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade11:49
atdprhsno new drivers for ubuntu-drivers autoinstall11:49
atdprhsWhat does the backports do?11:49
hateballatdprhs: gets you a later version of plasma that fixes a number of multimonitor bugs11:50
hateballit's still not perfect11:50
atdprhsoh sweet11:50
atdprhsI remember, I had install 2 fixes manually11:50
hateballatdprhs: if upgrading to 16.10 is an option you'll get an even later version11:50
atdprhshopefully that this follows up11:50
atdprhshateball, I'm the only one in the office that uses Kubuntu (I don't want it look like I'm troubleshooting the OS more than doing my work lol)11:51
hateball:)11:51
atdprhsBased on your experience, how do you find 16.10 :D11:51
hateballWell it is more polished than 16.0411:52
hateballhopefully we will get plasma 5.8 backported to 16.04 some day tho11:52
atdprhswhat about troubleshooting?11:52
hateballatdprhs: What do you mean troubleshooting?11:52
atdprhsDo you find yourself troubleshooting it's issues more than 16.0411:52
atdprhsI'm considering upgrading to 16.10 if it's really better than 16.04 (specially from the troubleshooting part)11:53
hateballWell I cant really say I have any issues11:54
hateballkscreen/plasma/qt/whatever still bugs out and loses track of my multimonitor settings, but wiping the configs and starting again fixes that11:54
acheronukthere are still some multi-monitor issues in 16.10's plasma 5.7. some we may be able to backport fixes, but others may have to wait for a full plasma 5.8 backport11:54
hateballdoesnt happen too often11:54
atdprhs@acheronuk, do you think it's worth upgrading rather than waiting for 5.8 or wait would be better?11:56
acheronukI'm running Zest now, and use Neon on my laptop, so my view on that is not likely to be objective or helpful11:57
acheronuk*Zesty11:57
atdprhs@hateball, when I attach the additional monitor, it keeps blanking, or sometimes only the bottom panel keeps blinking and then all the screen goes blank only at the right side, I can see my mouse pointer and can only move it strictly in a vertical position up and down only11:58
hateballatdprhs: are you using nvidia-settings to configure it?11:58
atdprhsnope, display configuration11:58
atdprhsI'm not in the office, I'm at home at the moment, so I cannot do any tests at the moment11:59
atdprhs@acheronuk, you mean this >> http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/10/official-ubuntu-17-04-codename11:59
atdprhslol in http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/10/download-ubuntu-16-10-flavors , first comment >> "Has the HDMI bug in Xubuntu been fixed yet? So many versions, same old problem..."12:05
acheronukatdprhs: yes. but I'm one of the people making kubuntu, so I run out development release on some things12:06
hateballatdprhs: if you are using nvidia binary blob I suggest you use nvidia-settings to configure stuff12:07
hateballtends to work better, in my experience12:07
atdprhsI am using the default Display Configuration on Kubuntu, I don't think I'm using nvideo binary blob12:09
atdprhsI'll have to google nvideo-settings12:09
atdprhs@acheronuk: I'm thinking about trying to join Kubuntu development, but don't know from where to start...12:10
IrcsomeBot<acheronuk> nouveau driver for nvidia is still pretty bad for my cards12:10
IrcsomeBot<acheronuk> the actually Nvidia one is a 'must' for me12:10
IrcsomeBot<acheronuk> though I don't use multi-monitor, so can't comment if it fixes any issues with that12:10
atdprhsI know about this >> https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/GettingInvolved/Development12:12
ahoneybunatdprhs: best place is #kubuntu-devel12:12
atdprhsthat's good to know, thanks @ahoneybun12:13
ahoneybunnp12:13
atdprhs@hateball i'm still backporting12:13
atdprhsdone12:13
atdprhsthanks @hateball12:14
atdprhsI'll try it out tomorrow, and see how it goes...12:14
atdprhsalso will check nvidea-settings12:14
hateballatdprhs: you'll need to restart the session once the upgrade is done of course12:17

SimoniousI've got a linux box on a wired network and access to a wireless network, I'd like to use the kubuntu box to bridge them.  help?  The wireless network is an island, the wired is my lan.15:40
BluesKajSimonious, so you have a router for the wifi and a switch for the LAN feeding a modem ?15:45
SimoniousBluesKaj: the wifi is actually an ESP826615:46
SimoniousBluesKaj: the ESP is in access point mode, I can connect to it with my phone..15:47
rattkingSimonious: take a look here for instructions on a few ways to do that.. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Internet/ConnectionSharing15:47
BluesKajSimonious, so where does your wifi connect to the internet?15:48
SimoniousBluesKaj: the wifi doesn't, the wire does15:49
SimoniousI want to bridge it with the kubuntu box15:49
BluesKajnevermind , I'm not making myself understood15:50
SimoniousBluesKaj: ultimately the wifi (the esp8266) will connect to the internet via the kubuntu box.15:52
SimoniousI seem to be missing the driver for the wifi card :/15:56

ChetManlyare backports automatically installed?16:35
ChetManlywhen I upgrade ?16:35
mgolden_ChetManly: No16:37
marco-parilloKubuntu Backports are not automatically added to your list of sources.16:37
mgolden_You need to add the kubuntu-backports to your list of sources16:37
ChetManlymgolden_: thought after 11.04 it was automatically done16:44
ChetManly!backports16:44
ubottuIf new updated packages are built for an application, they may go into Kubuntu Backports, which is one of the official Kubuntu PPAs. See https://community.kde.org/Kubuntu/PPAs for more information.16:44
ChetManlyok how do I do this ?16:45
marco-parillohttps://community.kde.org/Kubuntu/PPAs#Kubuntu_Backports probably does not make it clear enough that those are terminal commands. Best to open a konsole.16:47
marco-parilloAfter the first you will need to enter your sudo password, and say OK on importing a key.16:47
marco-parilloThe second should just run (and run, and run).16:47
ChetManlymarco-parillo: I figured it out, wow I wish I knew this before16:48
ChetManlyno whammies !!! o_016:49
mgolden_ChetManly: FYI - it always has and always will work the way it does now. When you run backports, you're running a different version of major software than the one originally released.16:50
marco-parilloOK. I think I will edit that page to make it more clear.16:50
ChetManlywonder what was in 14.04.05 backports16:50
ChetManlymarco-parillo: yes please16:50
BluesKajsudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports16:50
marco-parilloWiki Page updated.16:52
ChetManlythe one page reads the backports are enabled after 11.0416:53
ChetManlythat is confusing16:53
ChetManlywish me luck, brb hopefully16:55
ChetManlywoot woot16:57
ChetManlyhow comee kde doesnt say what version anymore16:57
ChetManlyi mean under the help16:58
ChetManlyI thought 5.7 was in backports?17:03
ChetManlynm im retarded17:06
ChetManlyhow do I make mono app not look awful17:06
marco-parilloChetManly: For KDE Plasma versions, I use kinfocenter.17:10
BluesKajplasmashell -v will give the version17:11
marco-parilloIt is easier to copy and paste from the suggested command by BluesKaj17:14
ChetManlymy mono apps look awful17:15
ChetManlylike gnome 117:15
gebruikerwhat are the system requirements?18:19
gebruiker( 16.04 )18:19
marco-parilloI have run Kubuntu in 1GB on a little Acer Aspire One Netbook. But most people would say I was a glutton for punishment.18:39
marco-parillo2GB on a normal sized laptop would make you a whole lot happier.18:42
gebruikermarco-parillo: is it more heavy than unity?18:45
gebruikerunity made my desktop slow eventually with the apps I had open18:45
marco-parilloI thought it was comparable to Unity. I bet a careful benchmark might show it a bit heavier than Unity, but it is not the big difference that (say) Lubuntu to Kubuntu would be.18:47
tearmannairanyone know why my /home dir would be constantly filling up space? it's a 28gb director with about 10 gigs I can account for, but keeps getting 100% full. I deleted 6gb worth of stuff and in about an hour it was 100% full again18:59
tearmannair16.1018:59
mgolden_tearmannair: check your .xsession-errors file in the home directory19:11
rodolfojcjtearmannair: from a shell terminal, run this command: du -klh --max-depth=1 $HOME19:23
mgolden_tearmannair: kdebugdialog was used in kde4 to control the logging into .xsession-errors.19:24
mgolden_Not sure if it works in kde519:24
tearmannairthanks! Checking that now19:26
tearmannairThat's handy - I was trying to find something that would show exactly that info thanks rdolfojcj!19:28
tearmannairlooks like thunderbird is downloading all emails from the servers - which is a huge portion, but the .local is also about 6gb? I'll have to see what that even is - not too familiar19:31
rodolfojcjtearmannair: for each possible culprit, you could apply the same command, for example: du -klh --max-depth=1 $HOME/.local/19:35
tearmannairthanks so much - that is hella handy... that narrowed it down perfectly - appearently steam downloaded 5 gigs worth of data, but I've never even been able to get it to open or run19:37
tearmannairdefinitely saving that - many thanks19:37

sintrewell differen tplasma kde version helped half a problem22:41
sintretrying to get hmdi out to work as dual monitor , kubuntu newest version blanks screen and projects an extended desktop to hdmi tv with higher resolution22:43
sintretried newer kde neon and it doesn't do that22:43
sintreit does project to extended desktop i native resolution of screen22:44
sintre"duplicate screen option does nothing22:44
sintrealso carries no sound thru hmdi cable22:44
sintreso well one kinda sort a move in right direction with new kde /plasma22:45
fuzecan someone help me update from 16.04 to 16.1022:45
fuzei ran dist-upgrade and it didn't work22:46
sintrei think the update manager gives option to do that22:46
fuzei think i added beta repositories a while back so its messed up22:46
sintrestart over with a fresh isntall via usb?22:47
sintrei'm a novice myself honestly22:47
fuzelol im not doing a fresh install22:48
fuzejust want to update22:48
sintrewell i assume for most part packages from the different version thru normal udate will update you22:48
sintreot i can give you commands soeone gave me last night22:48
sintrebut that basicly takes you to new experimental version22:49
fuzei think i can figure it out22:49
sintrebut after done all progs and settigns were still there22:49
sintreor just wait around chat , most people kind sorta lurk alot of knowledgable people check in once and awhile22:49
vinnythat would be ,,,,,,, do-release-upgrade22:51
schnoodlesHey guys. Since upgrading to 16.10 it looks like my multi monitor support actually got worst. I get a monitor which I can have applications on but there is no wallpaper, no right click on the background, no panels and I have to create a new one and drag it onto that screen every time. Is this a known issue?22:52
sintreschoodies22:52
sintre>same problem here22:52
sintrelast night spent hours trouble shooting22:53
sintrekde in kubuntu will shut off and default my tv to a extended monitor22:53
sintrebut newer version of kde and plsma will not do it but still only will alow an extended monitor setup22:53
sintreits kind like the white unicorn thats need to get fixed now it seems22:54
schnoodlesMine is on a laptop with 2 monitors connected. HDMI flickers black once every 20 minutes. Display Port seems good.22:54
sintrecomputer less than 3 weeks old with intel integrated as well22:54
sintreseems super ammount of bugs and honestly no hardware support atm for dual displays22:54
sintre:('22:54
sintrehttps://neon.kde.org/download22:55
sintrelast night somebody pointed me to this to try with new plsma version22:55
sintremore stable but still cannot clone display22:55
sintreonly extended desktop22:55
sintreand won't carry sound because of it22:55
sintregiven now even the cheapest computers are coming with hdmi our vga of some wort22:57
sintresort22:57
sintremaybe people are getting to work on it22:57
sintrei hope :)22:57
vinnyI dont seem to have much of a problem with 2 screens ,,,1 the laptops and 2 the VIZIO TV ,,,,,,,,,exept for plasma crashing when its pluged in some tims ,,,,,but a plasmashell & fixes it ,,,,and sound is good22:58
schnoodlesAlso seems like settings are not setting as much as well. Not too sure how many times I have told my windows to not group....22:58
sintreplsma crashing got less bad when i updated last night , but trying dual montors useless22:59
sintreas it defaults to exteneded display but then shuts of notebook screen lol22:59
sintrethat neon distro actually didn't do that , so kind cool22:59
sintrecould control tv windows from notebook screen , and at native resolution22:59
sintrebut no damn sound to tv23:00
vinnyyes I am on Neon repos on a Kubuntu-16.0423:00
vinnyand  Nvidia GPU 860M23:00
sintregetting close , i don't want to even mention projecting screen via wifi to my blu ray player lol23:00
sintrei can do it win 10 i'm sure the open source community can figure it out one day lol23:01
sintreand btw win 10 is gone on a shit hdd that came with system in my closet23:01
vinnyhow dose that work ?23:02
sintrebsicly has a setting that say project screen via wifi in windows and in my sony blue ray player23:02
sintrethey sync and screen is displayed on my tv23:02
sintrei have to manually activate it on the blu ray player23:02
vinnyO23:03
sintreblu ray player send singnal tyo tv and walaa23:03
sintrebut i'll be happy with just being able to clone thru hard wired hdmi with sound atm :)23:04
vinnyare you sure you had the sound set to the right device23:05
sintredoesn't give option23:05
sintrein sound menu23:05
sintreatleast in neon23:05
sintreno option for external monitor23:06
sintrejust defaults to notebook speakers23:06
sintrei think that may have to do with it being forced to be an "extended" display23:06
sintreas i drag a window from notebook screen over onto the tv23:06
sintrethen can max the video23:07
sintreit just sees it as an extended part of display23:07
sintreseems sound and dual monitors aren't integrated23:07
sintreat all23:07
vinnyinstall pavucontrol it gives a more sane set of controls23:07
sintretaking note , but gonna have to get rid of new regular ubuntu on ssd23:08
sintreso thinking about starting over with latest kubuntu and that neon release23:09
sintressd is 250 gigs formated 23223:09
sintrenot a fan of lay out of the original ubuntu23:09
sintrebut it didn't install a bootloaded that worked and allowed me to boot kubuntu23:10
sintrewhich i think was my fault23:10
vinnyhowever you can ,"now"  use the volume widget to drag and drop an applacation that is playing sound to the proper output23:10
sintrenot asure gonna have to resintall to find out23:10
sintreusing neon not sure where widget is , just a ison on lower right side23:11
sintreaditional download?23:11
vinnyno thats what I ment the volume "icon" in the system tray23:14
sintreyea has no reconision in neon of the tv23:15
sintrei'll look again later tonight , but all the volumes listed were on , no noise from tv23:16
vinnyit wont ,,,,but it should show your HDMI audio device23:16
sintrehmm i'll check for that later tonight , tv in use in house atm :)23:17
sintreroomates pissed i used it for most of last night lol23:17
vinnyand you would drag from the application side to the HDMI audio chanel to direct the output of the app to the devise23:17
sintrecertainly later i'll be looking for it23:18
sintreif i can get sound plus full resolution thats a temp work around until the whole thing gets solved in kubuntu23:19
sintrejust dual boot neon for  movies and media23:19
vinnydo you remember if your HDMI audio device is even listed in the system settings mulymedia section23:19
sintreno didn't look for it , more obsessed with trying to get clone display to work23:20
vinny<multimedia>23:20
sintrethe no audio was kind just another problem didn't feel like trouble shooting earlier today23:20
sintresorta happy it atleast would prject in extended display at the tv's native resolution23:21
vinnyuse a bigger stick :)23:21
sintreinstead of grainy and looking like crap23:21
sintretrust me this is my white unicorn23:22
sintrei don't care how much i gotta bring this up beg or what not , this dual monitor and uadio will be fixed23:22
sintresome how some day23:22
sintreprobally by somebody else that kknows how and has "connections"23:22
vinnysorry fore your trouble mine works OK on this /exec cmd inxi -G23:23
vinnycmd: Error 7: One of the options you entered in your script parameters: -g23:23
vinnycmd: is not supported. The option may require extra arguments to work.23:23
vinnycmd: For supported options (and their arguments), check the help menu: inxi -h23:23
vinnycmd: Graphics:  Card NVIDIA GK104M [GeForce GTX 860M]23:23
vinnycmd:            Display Server X.Org 1.18.4 driver nvidia Resolution 1920x1080@60.01hz23:23
vinnycmd:            GLX Renderer GeForce GTX 860M/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version 4.5.0 NVIDIA 370.2823:23
vinnyoops23:24
sintrewell supposedly intel even sponsors a linux friendly site23:24
sintrewtf aren't they helping fix this on a 5 gen 13 mobo with a 5500 integreated gpu23:24
sintrethats I323:25
vinnytheir driver stack works well23:25
sintreisn't that included23:25
sintreor is it a plasma kde issue23:25
vinnyI meant the intel site for linux graphics drivers23:26
sintresinse new plsama kde fixed one problem i think its the plsma kde honestly if neon works far better than updated kubuntu23:26
sintredrivers need the software to use them correctly  :)23:27
sintreguess thats my mission23:27
vinnyyes I'm on plasma 5.8.323:27
sintrecan you clone screens or are they extended23:28
sintreand if you clone will it use highest resolution for said device or default to min resolution on primary device23:28
vinnythe intel graphics site has a hole stack ,,,,,the driver and related software23:29
vinnywhat is the diference ,,,,so I understand you better23:30
sintreok my notebooks displays at said resolution say 1200X 80023:30
sintrenot real numbers just hypothetical23:30
vinnyit's 2 diferent desktops ,,,,,not mirrored same23:31
sintrebut tv has highest native at 1900x767723:31
sintrenot real numbers23:31
sintreif you cclone does it use the highest resolution for that device or does it default to the lowest on your notbooke/tower23:31
vinnyO my laptop is 1920x1080 and so is the TV23:32
sintreahh see my notebook is 1330 something and my tv is 1990 something23:32
sintreyes my tv is your 1920x1080 and my laptop is 1366 x 76823:34
vinnyya and my tower ,,,,,running Kubuntu-14.04 is running at the same on it's monitor and the TV ,,,,,intel graphics23:34
sintreit won't send max res to tv , but tries to default it to the lower res then looks like shit 34 inch tv vs 15 inch notebook screen23:34
vinnystrang that you cant seem to set it in system settings23:35
sintreit won't even clone inside neon23:36
sintrebut fkin luck got it to inside kubunutu but then cut of 1/4th of screen lol23:36
vinnyI guess I'm just lucky :P23:36
sintrebut atleast in neon it won't automaticly turun off my notebook monitor23:36
sintrehehe enjoy it :)23:36
sintreits more of an annoyance that i can't make it work than a NEED it to work thing23:37
sintrebtw as for those intel stack packages do they install any intell specific software in linux or just drivers23:37
vinnywell  wify neads me to go to store ,,,,,,,,, ☮23:39
vinnydo not remember23:39
sintrek have fun on errands23:39
vinny:P ,,,,ya23:39
