[06:55] Morning everyone [06:56] hallo \o [07:03] hey daftykins [07:03] how are you man [07:04] not too bad at all thanks! and yourself? got the excitement of a misbehaving Lenovo laptop to look at today [07:08] That sounds annoyng [07:09] I've been pondering what my next laptop is going to be, not looking foward to the new macbooks with their usbCports [07:09] sort of, user claims a crazy touchpad and system freezing when the lid is opened after having been closed (no sleep action configured) [07:09] was it yourself with a Dell XPS13 9350 [07:09] + ? [07:09] 'cause i love mine [07:10] Yep , i have that one :) [07:10] The macbook I use for my company [07:10] I do presentations on it, video editing etc [07:11] The xps runs Ubuntu, [07:11] can't stand Apple myself [07:11] oh, is there not good enough video editing software available? [07:11] daftykins: need it for my company. (I'm a freelance ICT consultant and I do a lot of talks and presentations) [07:11] daftykins: comparing openshot to final cut pro might be stretching it a little [07:12] i've just genuinely never looked, never done video editing and i don't run Linux on the desktop [07:15] Audio editing would be fine on linux , Audacity and some other tools are all I need [07:15] but .. video editing is another thing. [07:15] but its more the presentation workflow [07:16] If i have a machine with only usbC ports is gonna be a hassle to hook it up to projectors and stuff [07:16] yep [07:16] but then you'd have to have a screw loose to buy one [07:17] right now those models are at the "only good for burning early adopters" stage [07:17] true [07:17] I still have a year to go if/when i'm gonna replace it [07:18] how old is your existing model? [07:18] might just replace it with a desktop mac mini and go for somthing different on the mobile site [07:18] mine is just over 2 years [07:18] but after three years its written off for the company so i might need to buy a new one [07:18] not HAVE to but .. [07:18] Definately not gonna buy the first version of a new model [07:20] if you saw the Louis Rossman youtube video, it's better to buy the 2014/15 model apparently [07:20] also, mac minis haven't been refreshed in forever so that'd be a very unwise move [07:20] http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Mac [07:23] True, [07:24] but i still have over a year to decide [07:24] so .. i have time [07:24] yarr, rumour has it some more machines are getting announced in the new year [07:24] but the video (i saw it too) did make me wonder what workflows I absolutely HAVE to have on OSX [07:24] heh yeah i would go out of my way to avoid them [07:35] true [07:35] most important workflow right now is Presentations [07:35] Do thoe is keynote [07:35] works fine, looks good , reliable [07:36] openoffice isnt quite there yet [08:33] morning [08:36] \o [08:43] morning boys and girls. [08:45] hiya [08:46] hi daftykins [08:47] o/ [08:48] \o [08:54] * zmoylan-pi looks forward to a nice hot bowl of porridge on this cold monday... [08:58] yes please. [08:59] hmm that sounds nice [08:59] i was thinking my usual cold cereal wasn't cutting it, probably going to nip to 'The Cornish Bakery' this morning to get a nice hot sausage roll instead ;) [08:59] silly folks don't even have their opening times on their site [08:59] Pain au chocolat here :) [09:00] :O [09:00] my eyes would say yes but my need to lose a few pounds wouldn't ^_^ [09:00] mind you i keep buying crumpets and spreading nutella on them, so i doubt that's going so well... [09:01] Gargoyle: you might want to give SASL auth a go, so you don't join, quit, join to change hostname :> [09:03] Just coffee and an apple over here === davmor2_HOLS is now known as davmor2 [09:03] for brekkie!? D: [09:03] Morning all [09:03] Running a fullscreen Linux VM on my surface pro 4 here :) looks sexy [09:04] just how many machines do you have? :P [09:04] my clients surface pro 4 was exhibiting those sleep issues they've all got and not fixed, not very impressive [09:04] daftykins: 3, SP4, XPS13 and my MPB [09:04] crikey [09:05] * knightwise is a cross platform geek [09:05] don't need all 3 to do that though :P [09:05] Morning all [09:05] \o [09:05] how goes it diplo? [09:06] Not to bad thanks matey, yourself ? [09:06] daftykins: I also need them for my company :)à [09:06] yeah good! early yet though :D [09:06] knightwise: pssh [09:06] SP4 at the client , MBP for freelance work , XPS for fun and learnign [09:06] hey diplo [09:06] Been up since 4:30/5 so close to midday here :D [09:06] hehe [09:06] what hot beverage are you havng this morning ? [09:07] well i meant my working day, but i've been up since ~8pm last night XD [09:07] nipping to the bank now, benefits of living on the high street \o [09:11] Dear god, how old are you, I couldn't do thwe all nighters anymore! [09:11] daftykins is a vampire [09:11] I just turned 42 .. allnighters no longer an option [09:14] * brobostigon just made himself a breakfast toastie. [09:15] hmm.. That sounds nice [09:15] * knightwise hasnt had breakfast :( [09:17] you'd think the partial success they have with surface pro they'd go all out to fix the issues with it [09:17] zmoylan-pi: agreed [09:17] All the hibernate problems are fixed on mine [09:17] so currently its behaving admirably [09:18] but you hear of all the problems and i'd find myself trusting it less as they continue to happen [09:18] hibernate != sleep [09:19] 8.7 [09:19] lets say i trust the device for 90% [09:20] wow, i'd take a hammer to it if i had hardware that unreliable [09:20] local copper and a youngish guy walk along the high street as i'm headed home with my sausage roll... "would you mind helping with a survey about police reporting?" [09:20] i said "yes i would" and carried on home to eat :P [09:20] they smelt sausage roll and wanted in on the action... :-P [09:21] :D [09:21] the true long arm of the law, pinching food [09:21] be thankful it wasn't donuts [09:30] oh and NatWest on the high street were having their automatic doors fixed :D [09:30] diplo: well, 31... but i don't plan to finish the day in full :> [09:31] post brexit, they'll only allow you in if you are wearing bicycle clips and carrying an umbrella? :-) [09:31] well that event didn't do anything to us [09:31] our banks are offshore variants that can't be dealt with in mainland branches - we've been out of the EU this whole time [09:32] My kids had just been born then, I guess that was the end of my all nighters (apart from work ) [09:32] poor tescobank seems to have been hacked [09:33] :o [09:33] ut oh, I have tesco bank account! [09:33] Although now unused [09:33] they've disabled their cards as money seems to have gone walkabout [09:34] isn't that a really generic pub chain? ;) [09:35] No emails from them about it, just telling me I have payments due in 5 days ( I don't they just send it anyway ) if ($balance == 0 ) dont send mail [09:35] :D [09:37] http://news.sky.com/story/tesco-freezes-thousands-of-bank-cards-over-fraud-fears-10647549 [09:40] hmm mythbuntu is no more... last 2 devs quit [09:40] mythtv... a name i haven't heard in a long time... [09:40] Haven't used myth for years, didn't realise it was still going [09:40] It's a pity Tescos didn't feel the need to get in contact with its custoemrs [09:41] but that would involve sending them an email, which they've been told they'd never do... #21st century dilemmas [09:42] perhaps they're still rushing around screaming? [09:43] all those rushing around screaming have been sent to the chicken processing plant... :-P [09:43] * daftykins spies the cat trying to find new things to claw [09:44] So who is watching the season finaly for America this week [09:44] if you don't provide something for the cat to claw, they will make their own arrangements [09:44] ugh i'm sick to death of that country's politics :P [09:44] zmoylan-pi: and then unarrange them ;) [09:45] she doesn't find her actual scratching post all that worthy, as it goes [09:55] Good morning all! Happy Monday, and happy Hug a Bear Day! 😃 🐻 [09:56] woo \o/ [09:57] although i just saw "The Revenant" (film) the other night and i'm not so sure that's a good idea! :D [09:57] my favourite was the bear that attacked a japanese pensioner a few years back... ex wwii vet who went all samurai on it... [10:16] Just told my mate about the Tescos thing, he reckons the 20k people are on the Tesco Value account and not the Tescos Finest Bank account ,not the same quality! [10:18] the value accounts only have 1 digit pins or something? :-) [10:25] JamesTait: man now I can't get the huggy bear walking down the street bowm chigga bowmmmm music out of my head [12:19] hi [12:20] whos here? [12:20] no one here but us chickens [12:20] ok your here at least [12:24] you're [12:24] :P [12:31] Boog [12:35] Zarro Boogs. [12:37] would that be from the essex boogs? :-P === alan_g is now known as alan_g|lunch [13:39] the worst thing about being fb friends with people in australia are the "bring on the summer" statuses when we're all freezing in UK [13:41] people down the sea front yesterday buying icecream even if it was 2c... just to keep warm... :-) [13:50] foobarry: yeah but when they are basking in the sun in the winter we are........wait has the southern hemisphere just stolen all the sun [13:51] foobarry: Glad you popped up... what is the Nagios alternative you use? [13:51] I want to give it a try [13:51] anagios or something? [13:51] adagios, its a wrapper on top of nagios to make it awesome [13:51] it allows editing configs via the webui [13:51] Ta, will start a container up now and tinker [13:51] That's what I want, the guys in are other office have problems otherwise [13:52] and still allows to see the /nagios underneath at any time (you won't want to) [13:52] pretty vs ugly [13:52] Run it on centos ? [13:52] yep [13:52] i have puppet scripts to install it [13:53] Ah right, I'm an ansible man so far, keep meaning to try puppet [13:53] Cent7 ? [13:53] diplo, foobarry: Zabbix and munin are two I've heard people in the lug bound around [13:53] our server is on c6 for legacy reasons [13:54] Yeah not a fan really, we still have cent4 in paces foobarry :( [13:54] no idea how good bad or indifferent they are they were just mentioned [13:54] brobostigon: how did the interview go? [13:54] I have nagios running / querying 80 of our customer sites, but because its 'hard' people don't use it enough [13:55] adagios should fix most simple config changes e.g. adding new contacts and adding services [13:55] bulk ack'ing of alerts etc [13:56] btw if you use monitoring screens, then nagcon displays your nagios/adagios alerts in a terminal [13:56] just setting up the container now and will have installed shortly [13:56] its the best awy to show nagios alerts that i've used/seen [13:57] oh right, they had a 42" screen up in our other office for it [13:57] god knows what they do now [13:58] times have moved on, a drone that pokes the person responsible probably :-) [13:59] As I say, we don't move on...
