=== JanC is now known as Guest19389 === JanC_ is now known as JanC [00:05] hi all :) i want to issue a command that will apt update && apt upgrade && apt install foo -- but without interactive prompts. "-y" option seems insufficient. any advice? [00:06] why is -y insufficient? [00:08] there are some packages that will pause during install and wait for a response. [00:09] maybe 2 times -y: apt update && apt upgrade -y && apt install foo -y [00:09] or start with -y [00:10] hdon__: DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get [00:10] so, "DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get update" for instance. [00:11] can you have encrypted lvm AND a seperate /home? [00:12] ArrEmmArrEff: how do you mean separate home? [00:12] ArrEmmArrEff: Sure. [00:12] im currently sacrificing encryption for a seperate home partitioni [00:12] which would i have to set up first? [00:12] you can encrypt the separate home partition yes [00:12] theres no way to do it in the installer [00:13] i have laptop with 20gb ssd and 320gb hdd i installed to the ssd for speed and moved my /home to the hdd [00:14] i liked that it would ask during boot for the encryption passkey [00:15] but if i seperate the /home in the installer i lose my encrypt option [00:15] yeah i understand, i dont know how to set that up in the installer [00:15] i dont think its possible to do both just one or the other [00:15] ArrEmmArrEff: you could use the ubuntu server install iso for doing so. [00:16] really bekks ? does it differ much from the desktop? [00:16] i think you just get more options in the text based installer? [00:16] its just personal laptop [00:16] ArrEmmArrEff: the installer gives you quite more options. Liking pointlessly mixing full disk encryption and ecryptfs. [00:16] *server installer [00:16] wicked [00:17] thanks bekks and acicula [00:17] ArrEmmArrEff: Just think about wether encrypting your /home isnt enough. [00:17] (dont use ecryptfs and fde at the same time though) [00:18] what do you mean bekks [00:18] i think he wants to encrypt both, but the installer only lets him encrypt the / [00:18] i just dont want my data readable by extracting my hdd [00:18] yes acicula [00:18] i was hoping for the screen during boot that asks for the encryption passcode [00:20] i think if dm-crypt is installed that is what happens [00:20] ArrEmmArrEff: WHICH data? your / or your /home ? [00:21] ArrEmmArrEff: and you still can use FDE with creating a crypted LVM spanning both disks. [00:21] lol sorry bekks my /home data. i dont think theres much in /system or /boot i need to worry about right? [00:21] ArrEmmArrEff: Correct. So you are totally fine with just encrypting /home. [00:22] bekks!! but i only get an option do do so on the server iso? right [00:22] hi guys. on Ubuntu 16.04 if I issue shutdown -h now && exit, I get a different exit code (not 0) than I was getting with ubuntu 14.04. How can I get exit code 0 please? [00:22] ok awesome [00:22] ArrEmmArrEff: you can encrypt /home from the desktop installer. [00:23] bekks!! even if it on a seperate disk ? [00:23] ArrEmmArrEff: Sure. [00:24] bekks!! ugh haha i tried and tried and as soon as i try to move my /home it grays out the encrypt option [00:24] ArrEmmArrEff: how do you "move" your /home in the installer? [00:25] editing the partition scheme from default to put /home on sdb [00:26] ArrEmmArrEff: do so and just select "encrypt" then, for /home. === ilfantomas_ is now known as ilfantomas [00:27] ok bekks ill give it another shot i was pretty sure once i moved the /home it would not let me chose to encrypt tho [00:28] bekks!! its the screen that says install ubuntu along side existing, install only ubuntu overwriting the disk, encrypt the full disk, or something else [00:29] ArrEmmArrEff: and you want something else... [00:29] and i have to chose "something else" to get the partitioin editor to move my /home [00:29] ya [00:29] ArrEmmArrEff: And? [00:29] and then i didnt see an option to encrypt after that [00:30] unless im real dumb and missed it somehow [00:30] ArrEmmArrEff: So create a LVM volume group spanning both disks... as pointed out above. [00:30] lvm group... ok i dont think i did that [00:35] anyone available to help troubleshoot gnome shell integration issue? I find its just cleaner that way [00:58] Poe's Law: always upgrade [00:59] makoya: 14.04 is supported 'tol April of 2019, whereas 16.04 embraces systemd as the inititate system and is the wave of the future. [01:32] This doesn't fix my problem however as I need both Windows and Linux for my work.. now that I have access to linux, how do I force a menu to appear to boot into either windows or Linux? [01:33] I'd made sure to tell the program to let me boot into windows on restart in case I couldn't boot into the new install of Ubuntu on the 400 gb partition using EasyUEFI.. [01:34] What can I do to take advantage of this current system while it's booted? [01:34] guest1110101: I would expect terminal command ' sudo update-grub ' to do that . [01:34] thank you.. I'll try that [01:35] guest1110101, I would abandon dual boot and just use a virtual machine instead [01:35] cant [01:35] otherwise you'll always battle grub updating everytime you upgrade. I'm starting to study a Linus cert [01:38] alright, I'm restarting [01:39] Windows, gosh dangit. [01:40] I'm still not being offered is the boot menu. [01:50] the thing is that Windows doesn't even see it in the drop down in start/rec [01:51] I wonder if that's a clue.. what's really the issue? [01:52] why does EasyUEFI see ubuntu but windows administration tools not.. [01:52] there has to be something I can do to enable the dual boot menu [01:53] never heard about easyUefi, not using uefi myself too, but our wiki is normally a good start [01:53] !uefi [01:53] UEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. For information on how to set up and install Ubuntu and its derivatives on UEFI machines please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI [01:54] I guess there is a muscommunication. I'm familiar with hardware and the bios aspects [01:55] I need to know more technical information about how to enable the dual boot menu. these things are built to work even if their quriky. since I can boot both, it's not even a question of incompatibility [01:56] the grub update command won't work and neither will it's equivalent on windows [01:57] they both tell me that the operation/update complete successfully on the command line though.. [02:05] easy mmmm [02:05] whoops.. darned smartphone [02:06] EasyUEFI is a software for Windows while it's booted in. it's not a part of the bios [02:06] I take it nobody here has an answer for me regarding my dual boot problem.. It looks like the ubuntu livecd doesn't support uefi boot, is that correct? [03:16] Well, offhand, I'd say the livecd should be bootable on UEFI because https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI mentions a boot screen explaining that "4. the "UEFI: USB" line allows to boot the Ubuntu liveUSB in UEFI mode. " [03:16] I've often wondered about that myself, but I have yet to have a working UEFI computer. [09:53] EriC^^, every bootmanager modification can render the pc unbootable [09:53] ikevin, my dual boot works perfectly, until there is a windows 10 update [09:53] w10 update has maybe just include a bootmanager update [09:53] ubuntu631: i guess windows is putting itself first in the efi boot manager list [09:54] ikevin, well that is incredibly annoying [09:54] so there is no stopping it [09:54] that mentioned workaround could work in theory cause it changes what windows bootmanager boots [09:54] EriC^^, that sure, they always do that [09:54] but some guy did say it made his pc unbootable so who knows [09:55] the os are on seperate hdd too [09:55] if you have a windows cd you can always reset the bcd stuff if it fails [09:55] when there is an update it changes the boot order in my bios... [09:55] i dont even have to touch grub to fix it [09:55] just change boot order again [09:55] yeah, and if windows is set to boot the ubuntu efi file (grubx64.efi) then that won't matter anymore [09:56] even if it's first in the boot order, it would boot ubuntu, but if you ever remove ubuntu you'd need to reset the windows bcd to boot windows again [09:57] if you have a windows cd you can always reset the bcd stuff if it fails <== or can change the bios setting to boot on grub and booting windows and restoring windows bootloader [09:58] ikevin: that makes sense [09:59] ikevin, i suppose so [09:59] ikevin, most posts i find about doing that claim the workaround doesnt work anymore and every time win 10 receives an update it over writes the boot files [10:00] ubuntu631, i think it just override files depending of his configuration [10:00] if you change his configuration, it would stay [10:01] it's the same case if you have multiple windows installation [10:02] and it's same for grub, if you forgot to add windows entry at any update, windows will no more be prompted in grub menu [10:06] ubuntu631,1 download https://sourceforge.net/projects/supergrub2/files/2.02s5/super_grub2_disk_x86_64_efi_2.02s5.iso/download 2 put on usb stick 3 make boot in efi from usb stick. 4 find ubuntu and boot from menu supergrub 5 once you boot ubuntu run grub-update in terminal [10:08] why is my terminal putting ^M instead of newline when I press Enter? [10:12] However running the command normally with sudo works everytime [10:13] Phothrism, add a depend to network on your script [10:13] EriC^^, the default, I haven't changed anything during setup, just llvm disk encryption [10:13] Onepamopa: yeah, you are going to need to use photorec and extundelete [10:14] It has the line "After=network.target" is this not the correct way? ikevin [10:14] Onepamopa: photorec searches for files and can recover them, but it won't preserve the names or dir structures [10:15] extundelete might be able to recover with dir structure, and check out magicrescue never tried it but it came up in the search apt-cache search recovery [10:15] testdisk seems to work with encrypted disk [10:15] Phothrism, can you pastbin your script? [10:16] devmapper [10:16] Actually I found a stackexchange saying network-online.target will work better, I'm gonna try that [10:17] ikevin, there are two: /dev/mapper/sda5 319G; /dev/mapper/ubuntu-vg-root 315G and the swap [10:18] Onepamopa, it depend of your partitions [10:18] only 1 partition: / and swap [10:18] the "default" setup [10:18] ikevin pulpo [10:18] so do I select /dev/mapper/sdaX or /dev/mapper/ubuntu-vg-root [10:19] i think ubuntu-vg-root, while in testdisk you will see if it's the good one [10:19] ikevin, there are also /dev/dm-0/1/2 with same sizes as /dev/mapper [10:31] ikevin, well, the files were empty [10:34] Hello can I activate a theme in my ubuntu without a third party softwarE_ [10:34] ? [12:27] no, even at "normal" orientation, the screen is flipped [12:27] the signal is "Inverted" it seems [12:27] i need help with Zenity. I need checklist, but how i add selection highlight with keyboard. Now i can't see where that selector is. [12:27] titodrew: hmmm! in which case maybe re-reading the crapy stuff might give a clue. did they miss/assume this step I wonder? [12:27] Like, it works, just ... the wrong way [12:28] Crystal2: then do "xrandr --output --rotate inverted" [12:28] Crystal2: but if the software is controlling it that may just change it back again! [12:29] Crystal2: does the orientation change if you rotate the PC whilst at the log-in screen? [12:29] Normal sets it to what I want [12:29] zenity --list shows that selector, but i want it to show also in checklist. Is it possible? [12:29] TJ-, let me check [12:29] Crystal2: maybe the output from the accelerometer is being inverted so up is down and visa-versa [12:30] TJ-, yes, that sounds reasonable [12:30] for just this process that is, i can disable it entirely using a proc setting [12:30] Is there a way I can invert that ? [12:30] Crystal2: in which case there *may* be a way to tell the kernel driver, or the iio-sensor-proxy program - to invert its interpretation of events [12:30] aeon-ltd: no [12:31] ... [12:31] Crystal2: You first need to identify the accelerometer's kernel module, which could be slightly complicated [12:31] aeon-ltd hi are you still there? [12:31] SummerRain: yeah, i wanted to say i didn't do anything to resolve your problem [12:31] aeon-ltd i need your help again :) [12:32] Crystal2: the quickest way I've found is to temporarily stop the system service, run it manually in debug mode, then re-enable system mode. That should give a report identifying the kernel device being used. [12:32] aeon-ltd im trying to install AMD LibM Library for Linux®. [12:36] Is there anyone here who knows Btsync and could help me with that? [12:37] Crystal2: I'd guess from that the device is a "SMO8500" so now to find the matching driver [12:37] TJ-, I have identified the display I want to turn off. What's next? [12:37] It's basically a laptop display, I want to turn it off for the external monitor. [12:37] ingive: "xrandr --output --off" [12:38] Name is the SMO8500 right? [12:38] or is that the eDP1 ? [12:39] oh nvm [12:39] Crystal2: is that a Dell PC? [12:39] So how do I find the driver associated with that ? [12:39] No, its an Asus TP500L [12:39] "Flipbook" [12:40] Crystal2: hmm; the only "SMO" drive I can find is "smo-8800" - but you must have one loaded so try "lsmod | grep smo" [12:40] aeon-ltd i can run the example but i need to refer the library [12:40] Crystal2: mine's an Asus T300CHI - but has a different make of accelerometer (MPU) [12:40] crystal@watomat:~$ lsmod | grep smo [12:40] psmouse 126976 0 [12:41] I don't think thats it ;) [12:41] Crystal2: err no, so lets use a different approach then! [12:42] There's these three in the lsmod list [12:42] asus_nb_wmi 24576 0 [12:42] asus_wmi 28672 1 asus_nb_wmi [12:42] sparse_keymap 16384 1 asus_wmi [12:42] Crystal2: try looking in the sys-fs: "ls /sys/class/" and see if you see a directory node with a name that has "accel" in it [12:43] None [12:43] Crystal2: as I currently don't have the device working I can't tell you where to find it [12:43] Hum... [12:43] Is there a way I can just disable the rotation completely? [12:43] Crystal2: OK, how about you "pastebinit <(dmesg)" [12:44] Crystal2: the easiest way would be to disable the driver, since much of this stuff is being done automatically by the core OS [12:44] http://paste.ubuntu.com/23450807/ [12:45] TJ-, thanks that worked. It seems a bit unstable is there any tools to monitor and see settings etc with nouveau? [12:45] I tried installing propietary graphics driver but it doesn't really function that well (can't log in, dropped back to login screen) [12:45] Hello! I am on a dell xps 13. when i connect a monitor via docking d3100 (displaylink) or pluggable thunderbolt3_to_hdmi, i get a 1sec-freeze all 10 seconds. how can I fix this issue? [12:47] Crystal2: well strange! I see no mention of the accelerometer 'input' device, or of any i2c or iio device wither, but we know that PC has it [12:48] ingive: you mean the output you disabled was glitching? 'xrandr' is the standard command line interface to the video controls [12:48] TJ-, it does have one, this laptop came pre-installed with windows, and it worked on that [12:49] TJ-, I had regular Ubuntu 16.04 installed on it, and the accellerometer was not working, but now that I installed Ubuntu GNOME, it suddenly "works" [12:49] Crystal2: well we know that too because Linux is using it - we just can't identify which driver! [12:49] Crystal2: yes, Gnome recently added core support for it [12:51] TJ-, any way you can disable this in GNOME specifically? [12:51] Crystal2: I think you'll find the sysfs node at "ls -a /sys/devices/pci0000:00/INT3432:00/i2c-5/ " [12:52] Crystal2: I don't know - don't touch Gnome at all [12:52] crystal@watomat:~$ ls -a /sys/devices/pci0000:00/INT3432:00/i2c-5/ [12:52] . delete_device firmware_node i2c-SMO8500:00 new_device subsystem [12:52] .. device i2c-dev name power uevent [12:52] TJ-: I fixed it. There was a problem with the curl library that was embedded in Vagrant that gave the issue. [12:52] Crystal2: maybe there's an additional option in the Settings applets somewhere? "Screen Display" or possibly "Appearance" ? [12:53] TJ-: this fixed it for me https://github.com/mitchellh/vagrant/issues/7969 [12:53] titodrew: well done; not the kind of bug you'd expect [12:53] Now its working as intended... [12:53] I've already searched all over it, done many google searches too [12:53] TJ-: exactly. Thanks for your time. Highly appreciated. [12:54] titodrew: that seems a bit brittle too if it depends on a particular version of something as fundamental as curl [12:54] Its in there though, that last command you mentioned, had the 8500 in there [12:54] anyone knows how long it takes to connect to a folder via btsync? [12:54] Crystal2: right, so show me "pastebinit <( find /sys/devices/pci0000:00/INT3432:00/i2c-5/ ) [12:54] http://paste.ubuntu.com/23450837/ [12:55] It's got 4 entries with the words accel [12:55] TJ-: yeah, but good thing it falls back to the default curl on the base OS [12:56] nvm, a lot more ;) [12:57] Crystal2: OK, so it's an IIC (i2c) device which explains why I couldn't find an obvious driver for it [12:57] Yeah, i2c is that 4-wire serial protocol right? I remember that from my embeded hardware class ;) [12:58] Hello [12:59] Crystal2: I've found the driver: "modinfo kxcjk-1013" [12:59] Is there a way to check what wifi chip I currently have in my computer? [12:59] Crystal2: so at worst you could 'blacklist' that module so it isn't loaded [13:00] TJ-, when I for example press the search thing in the bar the entire screen becomes blue except the bar [13:00] Mulf: "lspci -nn" [13:00] Mulf: lspci or lsusb might help. [13:00] TJ-, was thinking like nvidia-settings command but for nouveau? [13:00] description: KXCJK1013 accelerometer driver [13:00] Yes you found it. [13:00] ingive: that sounds like the Nouveau driver doesn't fully support the GPU (yet) [13:00] Crystal2: best option would be to explore/ask Gnome (support) how to disable its use of the accelerometer [13:02] Crystal2: I think there's a Gnome IRC channel here on Freenode which may help there [13:02] TJ-, it's an old laptop [13:02] TJ-, for now though, what do I have to add to my blacklist file to disable it? [13:03] TJ-: Thanks [13:05] TJ-, I've just added it to the blacklist file, I'm rebooting now [13:05] Crystal2: "echo blacklist kxcjk-1013 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-kxcjk-1013.conf" should do it for reboots. "sudo modprobe -r kxcjk-1013" now might do it [13:08] TJ-, that didn't fix it :3 [13:10] Is it possible to make linux terminal always execute a command before opening? Like.. [16:44] ikonia: http://paste.ubuntu.com/23451609/ [16:44] I need to shrink a partition and give that free space to another [16:44] DammitJim: a partition or a locical volume [16:45] hi! [16:45] chibill_: so either the system has had the Yakety 16.10 repos defined in apt, and they're now gone, or a do-release-upgrade aborted, or something else installed that 6.2.0-10 version manually [16:45] But the thing is I never did... Any way to possible downgrade it? [16:45] LVM, sorry [16:45] TJ- : yes the external server will accept and deliver mail through a mx record of my server [16:45] or is that not possible. [16:45] DammitJim: so what are you actually trying to do clearly [16:45] s7urmi: apt-cache search cinnamon [16:45] mjh75: for a moment i was wondering if i was building here some nukes in the garage xD [16:46] SipriusPT_: That sound like incoming..... [16:46] ikonia, let me dig the details out [16:46] quel est le plus stable: ubuntu ou debian, d'après vous? [16:46] chibill_: my best bet is you're installed something else that manually pulled in its own GCC base packages - maybe some other, more up-to-date, GNU language compiler ? [16:47] mjh75: ah yes, that is what i am trying to solve now. I am already able to send mails from multi local accounts to multi external accounts with postfix [16:47] .it [16:48] SipriusPT_: you understand that what you've just said contradicts what you initially said [16:48] SipriusPT_: So you have outgoing working....now you want incoming? [16:48] ikonia: https://thepasteb.in/p/Y6hkKv1yrNmH7 [16:48] SipriusPT_: you said you needed "incoming" mail - and it wasn't getting deliered [16:48] Okay. Still anyway I can fix that so I can use my grahpics card... (Currently have to use nomodeset to even boot.) [16:48] SipriusPT_: now you say it's just an outgoing smtp relay [16:48] SipriusPT_: I think you may have misunderstood. I'm describing a scenario where your new mail server is *NOT* in the domain MX record, but another externally managed server is. That external server would be internally configured to deliver all mail for your domain to an IP address you specify (where your new mail server would be listening and only accept connections from that single external server) [16:48] mjh75 and ikonia: sorry you are typing to fast lol [16:48] SipriusPT_: you should not be doing this - sorry to be harsh, but you don't get it [16:49] chibill_: well, if the core GCC file versions have somehow been updated, rolling back to the expected 16.04 packages could severely break things, especially as it is not clear how it got into that state [16:49] s7urmi: cinnamon-desktop-environment should do it [16:49] there is miss-truth being told here [16:49] "it's a clean install" [16:49] clearly it's not [16:49] I have a logical volume that I want to shrink from 14GB to 4GB [16:49] re-install [16:49] ikonia: ok, thank you and sorry for keeping u so busy ;D [16:49] that's first step [16:49] can I assign the free space to another logical volume? [16:49] DammitJim: ok, so man lvreduce [16:49] I think they are both in the same volume group [16:50] ok, thanks! [16:50] i was wondering, if i install my old ubuntu mate Beta 16.04, will it update to the non beta (it will save me downloading the new iso) [16:50] DammitJim: once you reduce the volume you can re-use the pe [16:50] hello [16:50] pe? [16:50] physical extent [16:50] Tin_man: yes, standard "apt-get dist-upgrade" or "apt full-upgrade" [16:50] Also jsut did some digging apparently i have libgcc1 installed which is what depends on that version of gcc-6-base [16:50] ok thanks [16:50] how i can install radio in unbuntu 16.04 [16:50] ? [16:50] can any body tell me ? [16:51] iparhan, radio? what freq? [16:51] freq ? [16:51] sorry [16:51] iparhan: what is your end goal [16:51] iparhan, you said radio? [16:51] ikonia, can I do this on the fly or do I need to reboot the server? [16:51] donofrio: can you explain why the frequency matters to that question [16:52] yeah [16:52] DammitJim: on the fly, the man page explains it and how to manage the file system on the volume [16:52] ikonia, I dunno I wanted to know what he wanted to listen to [16:52] donofrio: ok - so that doens't matter [16:52] donofrio: please try to provide help [16:52] ikonia, I thought I was - geesh [16:52] i wanna listen fox news ,BBC in my ubuntu [16:52] this is my end goal [16:52] iparhan, apt-get install kodi [16:52] kodi ? [16:52] well I think I need to reinstall to fix my problem... (I can't downgrade libgcc1 which is what somehow bumped my gcc-6-base) [16:52] iparhan: as in the radio station ? [16:53] is thta a radio ? [16:53] chibill_: as best as I can figure out that 6.2.0-10 came from Debian unstable (sid) [16:53] iparhan: so unless you have an RF transmitter in your machine you can't listen to radio, you CAN liten to internet radio stations [16:53] yeah [16:53] it's got addons that will allow to listen but others may know better solution [16:53] a radio station [16:53] ikonia: RF receiver :) [16:53] wtf.... how did a debain package get on my install of ubuntu.... [16:54] To be honest, I read the man page and even though I understand some stuff, it's a bunch of scattered information [16:54] is there an ubuntu recommended tutorial? [16:54] o got itr [16:54] thks [16:54] DammitJim: no [16:54] DammitJim: what part is not clear ? [16:55] that one then needs to use lvcreate to safely shrink the snapshot of the logical volume [16:55] DammitJim: lvcreate will not reduce a snapshot [16:55] TJ-: ok. I think I'll file a bug-report then [16:55] DammitJim: lvreduce as I told you will [16:56] You should therefore ensure that any filesystem on the volume is [16:56] resized before running lvreduce so that the extents that are to be [16:56] removed are not in use [16:56] iparhan, https://www.tvaddons.ag/install-addons-kodi/ when finished [16:56] o thanks donofrio [16:56] DammitJim: right, and thats why I told you the man page will explain how to manage the file system [16:56] DammitJim: so you have to reduce the file system before you can reduce the volume under it [16:56] iparhan, config wizard will do all you need [16:56] am I reducing the file system with lvreduce? [16:56] iparhan, config wizard will do all you need [16:56] DammitJim: no, not unless you use the right flags [16:57] DammitJim: which is in the man page [16:57] or do I need to use the switch --resizefs [16:57] DammitJim: correct, -r / --resizefs [16:57] donofrio how i can add some files to Kodi ? [16:58] iparhan, hu? [16:58] donofrio: what is the fusion repo ? [16:58] iparhan, just follow steps that are in that fusion url I posted [16:58] donofrio: what is the fusion repo ? It's slow because you're running web code, not native. [19:55] rmac i did read about that but i was hoping it would of been more optimized [19:55] Bray90820: restart and check /var/log [19:55] BaW: thanks for that. do they have a repo mirror as well? [19:56] ghostmech007 yes [19:56] ncie [19:56] whoops [19:56] ghostmech007 i have a 10gbit fiber and always can pull a good 1gbit from them [19:56] jatt: Would there be a time in the log file so I know what error is what? [20:11] ok but I can only do that via ssh [20:11] it's faster [20:11] i dont have physical access to the machine [20:11] jatt makes a great point apache is not as fast as lighttpd, if you can run it i would do it [20:12] no i definately want to stay with apache2 [20:12] ok, it's all about choice 😉 [20:12] so moving /var data to external drive only is possible when most services are stopped? [22:37] bobbob: how does updating emacs do this [22:38] Ben64: In broke something by adding a PPA that gives access to emacs25. So I removed the PPA. Then I removed all the packages associated with it. Then I went on to remove system emacs [22:38] system emacs includes a package called emacsen-common [22:38] removing that removed a lot of gnome things [22:39] openbox feels fast. but I feel like I'm back in the late 90's [22:40] how can I list software I installed ? [22:40] and see which taking more space than others? [22:41] welovfree_: install debian-goodies package then run "dpigs" [22:42] zykotick9, is this the command " sudo apt-get install debian-goodie" [22:43] welovfree_: but debian-goodies is the package name [22:43] I guess I could install kde, but I'd prefer to use the gnome desktop environment [22:44] are you on ubuntu or ubuntu-gnome or...? [22:45] Ben64: I'm using ubuntu 16.04. [22:45] then install ubuntu-desktop [22:45] welovfree_: maybe something like ' dpkg --get-selections > ~/my-packages ' and look through the text file "my-packages" to see what is , As to dis space, I use a 'du' command, like ' cd / ; sudo du -sx * | sort -n ' . If you need to drill down further, use cd to move to a directory of interest then repeat the du command. [22:45] The results are in megabytes , [22:46] Ben64: I think it's already installed. I'll check in a sec... (when my console has returned from installed kde) [22:46] Bashing-om: if you're going that way, i'd suggest ncdu [22:46] ncdu is fantastic [22:47] <\9> sort -n and sort -h exist o_o [22:47] <\9> and i just last week wrote a script to deal with that [22:47] Ben64: like, I think that 'apt-get install ubuntu-desktop' was one of the first things I tried to reinstall gnome. But the feedback from the console told me that the package was already installed. [22:47] I'll be able to tell you soon [22:48] zykotick9: Noted ! and agreed , I will try and keep it in mind .. will so note it . [22:50] hey i have ubntu 14.04 installed with linux kernel from repo, can i install linux kernel 4.8 over top of it? [22:50] Ben64: ok, I ran 'apt-get install ubuntu-desktop'. The command failed with this output: [22:50] http://hastebin.com/fiwasibaze.sql [22:50] <\9> that's a bug in package configuration that ubuntu still hasn't bothered to fix [22:52] \9: was your last directed to me? [22:52] <\9> yeah [22:52] if so, does that mean Im' pretty much screwed? no more kde or gnome? [22:52] <\9> you need to fiddle with the packages somehow [22:53] oh god [22:53] <\9> bobbob: http://askubuntu.com/questions/621284/unmet-dependencies-when-trying-to-install-kde-plasma-5-3-on-ubuntu-15-04 [22:53] that possibility always horrifies me.
