th0rfunkyjive, I am just getting started with iptables myself. It is an interesting learning curve.01:39
funkyjiveth0r: I used it a long time ago ... I used ipchains and then I was around when iptables first started .... and then a big gap.   so some of these things trip me up.  :)   best of luck to you and thank you for sharing your mind with my problem.01:40
TolerateNationsEhi, i'm using ubuntu 16.04.1 and my internet speed is very slow on ubuntu, it was slow on linux mint as well which is based on ubuntu. but my speed is very fast in windows.01:40
th0rfunkyjive, sounds like you and I fought on the same battleground :)01:41
funkyjiveth0r:  :)  nice.01:41
funkyjiveTolerateNationsE:  what measure are you using to determine "slow"  ?   is this a bandwidth meter like speedtest.net ?01:42
coltWhat are the "extra" modules included in the linux-image-extra family of packages?01:42
FireStrikerWhat internet browser do you use on ubuntu TolerateNationsE ?01:42
TolerateNationsEFireStriker, funkyjive, i just download vlc player on windows, its speed in firefox was nearly 3MB/s , used the same link to download on linux firefox and speed don't go above 470Kb/s, also tried some good torrents and speed don't go to even 500Kb/s in linux01:44
TolerateNationsEalso used chrome, and xtreme download manager01:44
FireStrikerOk01:45
funkyjiveTolerateNationsE: do you have comcast and some kind of proprietary software on windows that accelerates things ?     or is this just a regular ethernet connection ?01:45
TolerateNationsEalso tried to change my dns to opendns and disabled ipv6 in edit connection. but no success01:46
TolerateNationsEfunkyjive, just a regular connection. nothing important install in win and also in linux, both are fresh, dual booting01:46
TolerateNationsEi came from linux mint because of this problem, but its the same in ubuntu too01:47
funkyjiveTolerateNationsE:  I suspect it is not software but configuration01:47
FireStrikerSame01:47
funkyjiveTolerateNationsE: is this the only machine on the network aside from your internet router?01:48
binarydepthhow can I call ircII via terminal and have it connect to Freenode ?01:49
TolerateNationsEfunkyjive, at this time yes, this is the only machine using my internet connection01:50
th0rTolerateNationsE, often the NIC manufacturer is less than forthcoming about the specifics of the NIC.01:53
TolerateNationsEi also tried a fix from internet where someone suggested to change file /etc/gai.conf and remove # from the line #precedence ::ffff:0:0/96 100 , but no success.01:53
th0rhe result is that the drivers have to be "reverse engineered". Considering using a different NIC to see if performance improves01:54
TolerateNationsEth0r, i have two wireless lan cards, although currently i'm using pci realtek wlan card but i also have tested this behavior on my usb wlan card01:54
funkyjiveTolerateNationsE: lspci | grep -i Ethernet01:54
funkyjiveTolerateNationsE: is this a wireless network connection?01:54
TolerateNationsEfunkyjive, yes, wifi01:55
TolerateNationsE06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5761 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 10)01:55
TolerateNationsE07:04.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)01:55
funkyjiveahh ...  that sounds like either drivers or the way the software sets up the wireless card.01:55
th0rTolerateNationsE, make sure linux is using the same wireless channel that windows chooses.01:56
funkyjiveth0r: good suggestions ....01:56
funkyjivethere is an app you can get on your phone that helps you identify the best wifi channels to use for your area01:57
funkyjiveNetgear made it I think.01:57
fn2only issue is areas where there is a lot of wifi01:57
funkyjiveit shows how many networks are on which channels.01:57
funkyjiveright.01:57
th0rI think wifi-radar is available for linux01:57
fn2I am in an area with 100+ wifi and no channel is free (middle of the city) *sighs*01:57
funkyjivefn2 but there is probably one that is less congested than the others still ...01:58
funkyjiveeven if it is marginal.01:58
fn2less than a fraction of a percent maybe01:58
th0rfn2, I bet if you looked you would find some channels much less crowded than others01:59
fn2on 2.5 nope, 5 ghz has the least congested channels.01:59
TolerateNationsEfunkyjive, th0r, it has been more than 3 months that i am having this issue on linux mint 18, and tolerating it, in different times and diferent scenarios, it's not a problem that i am having just now. i have done many things apart from highly technical things, but results are same. my wifi router selects the best channel that is not available in area. and also my area don't have much wifi signals, i see only two wifi, 1 is mine and one anopther.01:59
th0rfn2, also, in an effort to minimize congestion the US  only uses three or four....attempting to keep from overlapping02:00
TolerateNationsEfunkyjive, th0r, let me show u my another card, i might get dc, wait for me i will be back02:01
FireStrikerWhat software is there for riping DVDs?02:03
TolerateNationsEfunkyjive, i have attached my another wireless card to usb, but somehow it's not appearing in that command you gave me02:03
FireStrikerI would like to back up my DVDs to the computer so I can watch them without a disc drive02:04
TolerateNationsEthat slow internet problem is so vast on internet, too many people have it, why devs not solve it?02:07
RatchetTheGamerWhere's the best place to talk about Linux and Linux gaming?02:07
TolerateNationsEi only use windows for gaming, no internet, but on linux internet is mysteriously slow :(02:08
th0rTolerateNationsE, in all fairness, data is slow for the same reason traffic is slow. There are so many possible bottlenecks, both inside and outside the computer.02:09
TolerateNationsEth0r, i can 100% surely say it's a linux prob, coz i'm having it for couple of months, tried many solutions but could not get my speed above 500kb/s in linux, at the same time whenever i go to windows i get more than 2MB/s always02:10
TolerateNationsEon the same wifi connection with same wlan cards02:11
th0rTolerateNationsE, I didn't mean I doubt you. My experience has been similar. I was just pointing out that it is difficult to point to one thing and ask a dev to fix it.02:12
TolerateNationsEth0r, yes, but there could be a way to determine this issue. what if i go to market and buy another wifi card and still don't get my speeds, and waste my money, i never used ubuntu before but i used linux mint 18 and previous versions which was based on ubuntu 14.4, and now on linux mint 18 my speed is slow but on previous versions my speed was good02:15
th0rTolerateNationsE, if you are getting the same results with two adapters, that use different chip sets, than I would start looking elsewhere. First I would take a look at channel assignments. I use something called Wifi Overview 360 on an android tablet.02:18
th0rI would also watch the signal strength. I once had an issue at a marina. Turned out one of the boats had its radar running...every sweep the wifi signal would take a nosedive02:19
th0rFirst thought, of course, is the wifi driver in linux. But if you have tried two different chipsets (drivers) than I would look elsewhere02:21
gregoirenoirehello world!02:22
TolerateNationsEth0r, haha yes it happens, but i'm a cisco student and i have read these basic problems and went through them, it's not about that, because many times i quickly switched from linux to windows to download something which was not getting good speeds but they got good speeds in windows. but may be my both wifi adapters have same chip? its not likely but it could be02:22
TolerateNationsEth0r, how can i see that? any command ?02:22
gregoirenoireI recently apt dist-ugpraded my ubuntu 16.10 box and now my default user fails to login.02:23
gregoirenoireI am getting this error message:02:23
gregoirenoireWARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning .02:23
th0rTolerateNationsE, easiest...check what modules each is using. If they use the same kernel modules...try another. Also, lshw should show the chipset I think02:24
TolerateNationsEth0r, i just attached my second wifi card, but it does not appear in that command, but it has detected as a wifi device and getting signals, do i have to restart pc to show it in that command?02:25
gregoirenoireI am getting this error message when logging in as my default user: "Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning ." It then drops to a login session where I can only login as guest (and cannot get root priveleges)02:25
gregoirenoireany idea what I can do?!02:26
th0rTolerateNationsE, try lsusb. I haven't messed much with those commands so not sure02:26
gregoirenoireI know my files are still there and I can drop to root terminal using grub advanced options, but I can't get networking to work.02:26
gregoirenoirecan anybody please help? :(02:26
edveIs it listed into lspci ?02:30
TolerateNationsEgregoirenoire, just wait, someone who know your problem will answer you02:30

edveTolerateNationsE: not even after a reboot ?02:32
TolerateNationsEedve, i have not restarted pc yet. should i?02:32
th0rTolerateNationsE, this is old school, but I still use it. open a terminal, sudo tail -f /var/log/messages, plug in the adapter and see what goes in the log02:32
TolerateNationsEi am going to restart anyway, wait for me, i will be back02:33

TolerateNationsEsame vlc player speeds up to 2MB/s now, ah, why didn't i try this wifi card before :D, so it's a problem of realtek card02:48

th0rubuntu290, this isn't a complete answer....you need to change the localization. usually it is done via the gui...but in chinese :)? but you should be able to find out what config to edit to change it03:31
saventso, BJ or something?03:31
th0rTolerateNationsE, I don't run ubuntu any more, so haven't used apparmor03:32

th0rTolerateNationsE, true. I use only google play apps...but that isn't a guarantee anymore.03:44
TolerateNationsEth0r, no guarantee at all :) we need per app rules like in xprivacy we can stop many permissions of apps, i never used app armor but i think i have to learn it, it's very complex03:46

Lopereisio: what's configured to be like gnome 3? Xubuntu, or just XFCE in general?06:04
siva_machinaif you stick with stable they are06:04
reisioLope: Xubuntu's preconfiguration of Xfce06:04
Lopereisio: I've found debian 8 packages are older than ubuntu 16.04 packages.06:04
reisioLope: Xfce vanilla is more of a GNOME 2 preconfiguration06:04
reisioit's really really easy to switch it around from either end, though06:04
siva_machinaMate would be closer to gnome 2 by default06:05
Lopeand debian 7 packages older than ubuntu 14.04 packages.06:05
SonikkuAmericaMATE == GNOME 206:05
LopeDebian is more about minimalism and stability.06:05
LopeUbuntu is more about usability.06:05
reisioLope: sure, because Debian has a stable branch, something Ubuntu doesn't have; you'd have to compare Debian's unstable branch with Ubuntu (which is based off Debian's unstable branch) for a half decent comparison06:05
SonikkuAmericaThe former is a continuation of the latter06:05
reisioMATE is a fork of GNOME 2, but it's untenable, IMO06:05
Lopereisio: but Debian's unstable branch doesn't have a 4 year release cycle, infact, it's fairly unsupported, innit?06:06
siva_machinareisio, how is it untenable?06:06
Lopereisio: I've used mate for 3 years. It's bread and butter for me.06:06
reisioLope: unsupported? What is it you imagine a four year release cycle gets you, other than some kind of imaginary license to pointlessly avoid upgrading for four solid years06:06
siva_machinathey are updating it to gtk306:06
SonikkuAmerica^06:06
siva_machinaand are far closer to doing so then xfce06:07
Lopemate is the reason I'm on 14.04.06:07
reisiosiva_machina: they're going to have a heck of a time, with the three or four devs they've got06:07
reisiommm, pretty sure Xfce already does GTK+306:07
reisionot that I care / that it matters :D06:07
reisioLope: well if avoiding newer versions of things is your jam, just use GNOME 2 :p06:07
siva_machinaNot as nearly complete as Mate06:07
reisiosiva_machina: what's missing?06:07
Lopereisio: what do you mean pointlessly avoid upgrading. Ubuntu upgrades stuff a little. What's the alternative with Debian?06:08
Lopereisio: if I use debian testing, will I always get the newest stuff and never need to reinstall?06:08
Lopereisio: I've never heard debian testing described as a rolling distro?06:08
reisioone or more of Debian's non-stable branches is indeed "rolling", basically06:08
reisioboth of them are*06:09
reisioreinstalling is not something you ever need to do with GNU/Linux, unless you're changing architecture06:09
reisioor unless you've broken something so badly it would simply take less time to reinstall than fix it without reinstalling06:09
reisioif the latter happens a lot, your distro is crap06:10
Lopereisio: well I'm on mint mate 17. That requires a reinstall.06:10
reisioLope: what does?06:10
Lopereisio: because it's 14.0406:10
LopeI'll most likely break my system if I change my apt sources to 16.04.06:10
reisioLope: then you should find a better distro06:11
reisioI've done only a single reinstall since 2005, when I switched from x86 to amd6406:11
reisioall other "installs" were direct filesystem clones06:11
Lopereisio: you bastard! :p\06:12
Lope(that's jealousy)06:12
Lopereisio: so what are you using?06:12
reisioit's just normality for sane distros, nothing special06:12
reisioI'm sure it can be managed on Debian distros, but I don't know their tricks well enough myself06:12
reisioavoiding LTS would be a step in the right direction, though06:13
reisioand instead updating more regularly06:13
Lopereisio: I've upgraded a RbPi from deb 7 to deb 8.06:13
reisioif it's not absurd to call "more often than once every four years" more "regular" :p06:13
reisio(hint: it is)06:13
Lopereisio: I'm now considering debian testing.06:13
Lopereisio: when I was first getting into linux I was a little clueless about what to pick. But now I know I have a preference for newer stuff.06:14
LopeRunning old software grinds my gears. I prefer occasional bugs to incapable software.06:14
reisioIME when people say things like that, what they mean is they want the latest poorly made Flash websites to work as expected06:16
reisio:p06:16
reisiobut yeah, "stable" distro branches are for servers, not desktops06:16
reisiowhere crashes cost money & ruin lives06:16
Lopereisio: https://fixmynix.com/debian-rolling-release-distribution-list/06:17
Lopereisio: haerd of siduction?06:17
reisionope06:17
Lopereisio: yeah I mean I don't like crashes either, but I'll see how it goes.06:18
reisioif you want to use Debian, just use Debian06:18
Lopereisio: if I set my apt sources to refer to "testing" rather than a release name, then will I have a rolling distro if I just keep upgrading it regularly?06:18
reisiowhy would you take someone dressed like Jennifer Love Hewitt home when you could just take Jennifer Love Hewitt herself home?06:18
reisioLope: probably, if you can get it to accept it at all; ask #debian06:18
LopeSo does standard ubuntu require a reinstall to upgrade from one LTS to the next?06:22
FireStrikerI think so but don't take my word I have only been useing it for a month06:24
Bashing-omLope: Short answer is no . Update manager system takes care of the release upgrade .06:24
Karunakaran[m]My mouse is not working in elementary os any soln06:25
LopeBashing-om: yeah I've seen it said on ubuntu's site that upgrading from one LTS toanother is not supported.06:26
k200hi06:26
k200is it possible to do GUI backup to google drive on Ubuntu?06:26
LopeWhich contradicts what reisio said about ~"using a decent distro, to avoid reinstalling"06:26
reisioLope: it doesn't require it06:27
reisioyou probably need to be familiar with a fair number of lower level things to always pull it off, though06:28
reisioreinstalling is popular on Ubuntu, which could be a bad sign, or just a sign that a lot of Ubuntu users are impatient / don't value their time in the long run06:28
reisioI will say that06:29
reisiosomething to take into account is that Debian (& everything based off Debian) does not "officially" support downgrading, at all06:29
reisiowhich is incredibly problematic06:29
reisiopackage managers in some (most?) other distros do06:30

David_FCHi guys. I would like ask your help. How can I check if my boot system is alright?. I had to change legacy in my BIOS cause UEFI was giving some troubles to boot Elementary.07:20
David_FCIn the moment is working well but I suppose it is better use UEFI.07:21
lotuspsychjeDavid_FC: you have dualboot with ubuntu?07:23
user141692OOOOOOOOOH finally i can boot into desktop!07:23
lotuspsychjeuser141692: tell us what you fixxed?07:23
user141692my graphics card is faulty. using any driver aside from oem cause whole laptop to freeze. booted into upstart and prime-select intel fixed this07:25
David_FClotuspsychje, Elementary is the only OS I have installed. However, the laptop came by default with Windows.07:26
reisioDavid_FC: nope, UEFI has essentially no benefits07:27
lotuspsychjeDavid_FC: we can only support ubuntu issues here mate, sorry07:27
reisioDavid_FC: that's why almost every manufacturer includes so-called "legacy"07:27
David_FCreisio, lotuspsychje ok, I undertand I am using another OS. But in general, is it alright I keep using legacy instead? Or in future I will need to change it to UEFI. Many thanks.07:28

tbnbuddhahi. i installed the "atom" editor. But when i try to start it from the start menu or from a shell it does not happen anything. I also checked syslog but there is nothing about that. Any ideas?07:30
reisiotbnbuddha: your run 'atom' from a terminal and what happens?07:30
tbnbuddhano response. just the blank shell prompt07:31
David_FCOk reisio and lotuspsychje thanks for your orientation. Have a good one. Cheers.07:31
reisiotbnbuddha: what's the package name, 'atom'?07:31
tbnbuddhayes. just "atom" but i added a ppa for it before07:32
tbnbuddhatook it from the official ubuntu website07:32
reisiotbnbuddha: what's dpkg -L atom | grep -i bin say?07:32
tbnbuddha"/usr/bin and /usr/bin/atom"07:34
tbnbuddhawhen i just type "atom" in a shell then there is a message that it is been crashed. normaly i use "atom filename". then there is nothing at all07:35
reisiotbnbuddha: what's the msg?07:35
reisioI think I asked for that already :p07:35
tbnbuddhanow that message didn't come again. it was a new window wich asked for "close" - "keep it open" and "retry"07:37
tbnbuddhajust had it once. now there is nothing at all again07:37
tbnbuddhai am on lubuntu. don't know if this is important07:38
reisioI think what you should conclude from this is that atom isn't worth using07:39
reisiowhich is usually the case with things you can only get from a ppa07:39
reisiois it written in node.js?07:39
reisiodefinitely the case with node.js things07:39
tbnbuddhammh tested it on my workstation and was quit happy with it on the first look07:39
reisiounfortunately one night stands don't necessarily make for great long term relationships07:40
tbnbuddhawhen i check "top" then i have multiple instances of "atom" there07:40

thesushimanoftaoi have tried using the boot-repair-cd and it needs additional repositories07:45
tbnbuddhathe problem is also that other friends i have don't have experience with vim at all. so if we work together it is just not practical07:45
reisiotry geany07:45
thesushimanoftaoi have also tried installing boot-repair off a live cd07:45
reisioit's cross platform, and what most people expect out of a GUI text editor07:45
tbnbuddhai can give it a shot but i am a bit disapointed right now. i read several articles of most common web development editors and it is quit frustrating that one of the most common seem to make trouble while installing it.07:47
tbnbuddhai really love linux but you lose so much time with software stuff until it really works. :(07:47
reisiommm, nope07:48
reisioyou're confusing linux with random new things you haven't used before that are coded in nonsense node.js by nonsense people07:48
tbnbuddhai never had anything like that on other os. that you install common stuf and then have to spend hours to make it work or get the answer, ok try something else07:48
tbnbuddhawhat i read is that atom is one of the most popular ones07:49
tbnbuddhaanother one was "brackets" which also don't install proper07:49
reisioright... mediocre things tend to be quite popular07:49

naccbenguitar: it would be good to provide more details: what are your modifications (a diff in a pastebin, maybe) and what the result is19:13
naccbenguitar: also, did you read `man limits.conf`19:13

benguitarI know that I've tried it both under my user using vi, gedit or Pluma, which are all read-only, but I've also switched users via terminal and gone root, launched the same limits.conf and made the modifications per online forums, saved the file (without any errors) and even after reboot nothing changes, my ulimit -a still says "max locked memory 64"19:16
naccbenguitar: ok, you need to provide the details i requested, if possible -- note that generally don't use su on Ubuntu; use sudo19:16

naccBray90820: it froze and you were still able to get the errors?19:29
naccBray90820: none of those are the reason for the freeze19:29
benguitarSweet! Thank you very much, my definite goal is to move from Logic Pro to Ardour (or Bitwig if I can afford it one day) but I'd like to use a Linux distro as my daily driver OS for everything and then maybe still have a machine with Windows on it soley for my gaming library, unless there is a good way to play Windows specific games without a performance hit.19:30
Bray90820nacc: Those are errors i pulled from syslog during the time of the error but after I rebooted19:30
Bray90820If that makes sense19:31
naccBray90820: *if* your system really hard froze, it will have stopped logging errors to disk19:31
naccBray90820: so syslog isn't useful19:31
Bray90820nacc: So then how can I further go about diagnosing the issue19:32
naccBray90820: I'm not sure -- for servers, I'd suggest a serial console or the IPMI/BMC console; your cherry-trail system won't have those :)19:33
naccBray90820: i wonder if you're tripping a hardware failure? maybe overheating?19:33
Bray90820nacc: That's what i was thinking a few days ago and attempted to turn of thermal control but not sure if I successfully did or not19:34
Bray90820I should also note a stress test of the processor made if freeze but VLC played it fine until I opened the unity dash19:35
Bray90820nacc: What I am thinking I should do is reinstall windows and run a CPU stress test and see if it freezes19:37
naccBray90820: seems reasonable19:37
naccBray90820: i mean, surface is a microsoft product, right? they might be doing something funky to make it work19:37
Bray90820nacc: Microsoft might be doing something funky?19:38
Bray90820nacc: I did check the temp a few seconds before it froze and it was at about 60C19:38
Bray90820nacc: I should also note I was getting an outrageous about of freezing in the browser until I turned off wi-fi power management19:40
Bray90820So you think I should try windows to test it?19:40
naccBray90820: microsoft could easily be doing something specific to their own hardware in windows that linux would never know about19:41
naccBray90820: wouldn't be the first vendor that did that; and i assume microsoft has no interest in supporting linux on surface*19:42
Bray90820Yeah but if i do try windows at least I'll know if there is a hardware issue or not19:42
naccBray90820: right, but you won't know if there is a hardware *support* issue or not19:43
Bray90820Correct but the first step is seeing if the hardware is broken19:44

ikoniatranshuman: so the emulated device is nothing to do with your phone being connected or not21:55
ikoniaso it sounds like you have a core problem with android studio21:55
ikoniarather than if your phone is connected or not21:56
transhumancorrect...its just ONE message21:56
Bashing-omfreakyy: How did you install the graphics driver ? .. best I recall version 367 is not available in the repo .21:56
kostkonjjgalvez__, you are probably missing the 32bit version of that lib21:56
ikoniaso you need to andress the problem with android studio21:56
transhumanI dont think so I think its a udev problem21:56
ikoniawhy do you think that21:56
kostkon!find libpulse.so21:56
ubottuFile libpulse.so found in libao4, libpulse-dev, libpulse0, libroar-compat221:56
ikoniaas emmulation is nothing to do with udev or a physical device21:56

ikoniaso if you can't emmulate - you have a problem with android studio21:56
Bashing-om!info nvidia-36421:56
ubottuPackage nvidia-364 does not exist in yakkety21:56
transhumanNO I am using A REAL android device instead of USING the emulated device21:57
transhumanits ONE message regardless of which you choose...its saying it cant find it21:57
ikoniatranshuman: right but you can't emmulate21:58
ikoniaso you have a problem with studio21:58
kostkonjjgalvez__, i.e. you could try something along the lines of sudo apt-get install libpulse0:i386 or sudo apt-get install libpulse-dev:i386 etc., whichever is needed21:58
transhumanok I will ask in android dev then but think its a udev problem but thanks...I will ask in #android-dev21:58
ikoniawhy do you think it's a udev problem ?21:58
freakyyI just did apt-get install nvidia-current21:59
jjgalvez__kostkon: installing lipulse-dev fixed the problem, thanks for the help :)21:59

workisfunhi guys I'm trying to install emacs 25.1. I downloaded the tar.xz, extracted it but when i try to run ./configure, i get `configure: error: You seem to be running X, but no X development libraries were found. You should install the relevant development files for X and for the toolkit you want, such as Gtk+ or Motif. Also make sure you have development files for image handling.`22:57
workisfunthen I tried running `sudo apt-get build-dep emacs24` but I get E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list`22:57

hggdhworkisfun: yes, you need the source packages22:58
workisfunthis is a fresh install of ubuntu 16.04 btw22:58
hggdhworkisfun: you need deb-src entries in your sources.list22:59

workisfunanother person elsewhere said to do sudo apt-get update first and after that build-dep emacs24 is working23:02
workisfun(sorry beginner here)23:02
hggdhworkisfun: it will not work if you do not have source packages selected on apt23:03
workisfunmaybe they were there by default, ./autogen.sh and ./configure are working now it seems23:03
hggdhworkisfun: on the other hand, before trying to install anything with apt, it is good to run an apt-get update23:03

pietilsonIf I performed a minimal install, and am now SSHd into Ubuntu, where do I go to configure the tty/terminal?  I don't have xterm installed, although $TERM identifies itself as that.23:30
pietilsonI am mostly interested in colors/background at this point.  Putty using the "Use System Colors" checkbox presents a white background terminal and its blinding me :p23:32
tasaifpietilson: why not change the colors in putty?23:33
tasaifpietilson: https://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-linux-unix-bash-shell-setup-prompt.html23:34
pietilsonideally, it is an exercise to better understand linux and how it works, I am a noob.  The odd part is, if I login to the box proper, the tty is black.23:34
tasaiffrom what I understand there are two way to approach it23:35
Bashing-ompietilson: I know not putty, but at local, my solutuon to that glaring white background was to invert . - alias xterm='xterm -rv' ; added to the alias list in .bashrc .23:36
tasaifif you modify the PS1 environment variables then that can be processed by your terminal emulator, but generally people configure color profiles on the terminal emulators themselves23:37
yoshimitsuany tutorials for beginning programmers in c/c++?23:38
pietilsonyoshimitsu: What terminal emulator am I really using if xterm isn't actually installed? (or at least I don't think it is).23:38
yoshimitsui'm not sure sorry, i just started using ubuntu23:38
pietilsonBashing-om: people typically manage colors through their shell then and not the terminal/tty itself?23:39
bekkspietilson: Yes.23:39
yoshimitsupietilson: probably gnome terminal23:39
pietilsonwoops, I meant tasaif23:39
Bashing-ompietilson: I just found that the easiest solution in my use case .23:40
Bashing-ompietilson: xterm is a very powerful application and there is a lot one can do for configuration. See ' man xterm '23:43
pietilsonBashing-om that is where I am really confused, I did a minimal install with the mini.iso, I have no xterm package when I run dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall23:44
