foobarrypopey: i was on nouveau...but also on 17.10alpha...so maybe try 16.10 instead...10:56
daftykinsmight depend on your card :>10:57
foobarrysince even adding proprietary drivers seems broken10:57
daftykinswhat, via the GUI tool?10:57
foobarryyes10:57
foobarrynever finishes, but also doesn't tell u what its doing10:58
foobarryi expect brokenness though10:58
daftykinsit's like that on stable versions too10:58
daftykinsalways better to just do package management manually imo10:59
daftykinsturned out that bit was failing for a mate because of his EFI install, the install process was trying to ask if he wanted secure boot disabled for him or not10:59
daftykinsi told him to ignore the "help" and do it manually, worked out fine :>11:00
foobarryyeah, used the gui to get the package names and used the CLI11:07
daftykinso011:07
daftykinsapt-cache search nvidia- :P11:07
foobarrywell it was broadcom and intel guff too11:07

zmoylan-pithere's something that will follow him the rest of his life12:09
foobarrywhy would you rush over and punch a doll either?12:13
daftykinsi think there's a fair bit more to that tale than is reported12:13
foobarryhas anyone tried budgie remix?12:45
foobarryubuntu budgie actually now as its official12:45
diplofoobarry: I use the PPA for budgie on this machine12:52
diploI like it, when I reinstall I'll probably do a fresh of just budgie12:53
foobarryi didn't like the spacing on the systray and the cinnamon style app choose12:53
foobarryside bar seemed quite nice12:57
foobarryalthough first impressions didn't blow me away12:57
diploDon't have the side bar on mine, keep meaning to look at it12:57
diploI played with Solus too but only in a VM, for me it's just worked with no issues12:58
foobarrythey change stuff every week on solus though12:58
foobarrypackage manager goes out of the door , rewrite everything in C, etc ,etc12:59
diploNew OS, everything changing quickly :)12:59
foobarryhttp://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/287242/were-enabling-display-ads-on-select-stack-exchange-sites?cb=113:01
daftykinshmmm tough call looking at super budget laptops for a mate, 1) i5-6200U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, no DVD, 1366x768 res LCD = £332.50 2) i3-5005U, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 1080p res IPS LCD, DVD = £266.6513:55
foobarrywould a chromebook suffice?13:55
daftykinsnever :)13:55
foobarrymore RAM is good13:58
foobarrybut has worse screen :(13:58
daftykinscan easily upgrade the cheapy to the same for £75 but yeah13:58
foobarryreally you want 1) with better screen13:58
daftykinsand the guy being a bit more senior shall we say, means he might prefer DVD13:59
foobarryhas to be laptop?13:59
daftykinsyep14:00
daftykinstried to call him to make the casting vote but he must be busy :D14:00
daftykinsalmost need to buy both, mix and match then return one ;)14:01
foobarryscreen size?14:01
daftykins15" so true budget tank territory14:01
foobarryhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-Inspiron-Laptop-Pentium-TrueLife/dp/B01IMX5TV6/ref=sr_1_19?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1479909641&sr=1-19&keywords=laptop14:01
foobarryoh, reviews were not kind..14:02
daftykinsmmm there's a heck of a lot of negative press surrounding that model Dell14:02
foobarrycan't see what the processor is14:03
daftykinspentium dual core in that sucker, ouch14:04
foobarrywhat, the old pentium?14:04
daftykinsnot sure, it's not specific on model # to tell which family14:05
daftykinsmight be more like a baytrail or such like14:05
foobarrysometimes if you're buying for an old fella then visiting pc world is a good option14:05
foobarrythere could be a showstoper or nice but pointless feature they like14:05
daftykinsthey don't exist in Guernsey14:05
foobarrybut...14:06
foobarry"where in the world?"14:06
daftykinswe're limited to buy online really :) local shops tend to have massively older generation machines in14:06
foobarrywhats the population of guernsey?14:06
daftykins65,000+14:06
foobarrya bit niche then14:08
foobarryprobably room for 1 pc shop though14:08
daftykinswe've got 3, 4 if you count the Apple reseller14:09
daftykinsactually, couple more elsewhere but not sure they hold any kind of retail presence14:10

AdriannomHi. I have two identical laptops with Ubuntu 16.04 recently installed on each. XFCE has been installed and Gnome removed, using the same apt commands. On one machine, NetworkManager cannot connect to wifi APs. When I click on an AP, the connecting icon spins and then after about 20 seconds it says "Disconnected - you are now offline". There was no password prompt even though the AP is secured. Windows 10 on the same l14:55
Adriannomaptop connects normally. The other laptop connects normally in Ubuntu. Please help?14:55
daftykinscompare them from the guest accounts to rule out user dot file quirks14:57
daftykinsyou say identical, even the exact model of wifi card *and* driver?14:57
Adriannomdaftykins, I'll check.15:00
Adriannomdaftykins, meanwhile, some log info: http://hastebin.com/ukupovoviy.pl15:02
daftykinsmmm would be best to see from both to see if they really do match up - i think the guest account bit is still relevant too15:04
AdriannomThe lshw is identical for the network cards, the laptops were bought at the same time from a big chain store15:04
AdriannomJust checking guest account15:04
daftykinsmmhmm so the intel 316015:04
AdriannomImmediate error on guest session: "Failed to add/activate connection. (0) Active connection could not be attached to the device"15:06
AdriannomImmediate when I click the wifi AP I mean15:06
diddledanhardware switch?15:07
diddledandoes it behave the same in a live dvd boot?15:07
daftykinsyeah that could fit, does say "failed to initiate scheduled scan"15:08
AdriannomOffending laptop: http://hastebin.com/raw/qimezimecu - Working laptop: http://hastebin.com/raw/qimezimecu15:11
AdriannomI'll check15:11
AdriannomI'm guessing it'll work on live cd15:11
diddledanboth the same link15:11
Adriannomhaha15:11
AdriannomOffending laptop: http://hastebin.com/raw/ukupovoviy - Working laptop: http://hastebin.com/raw/qimezimecu15:11
daftykinsno avahi talk on the bad one15:13
daftykinsperhaps 'cause it's a latter stage15:14
AdriannomHow do you mean?15:15
daftykinsperhaps avahi only starts doing stuff after, on the working one15:15
AdriannomRight, maybe15:15
AdriannomOk live cd wifi works fine15:15
daftykinsare they the same kernel - and is the kernel line identical? no extra boot params on one etc15:15
AdriannomBoot back into problem os?15:16
daftykinsja15:16
daftykins"cat /proc/cmdline"15:16
AdriannomIdentical apart fromm UUID: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-47-generic.efi.signed root=UUID=xxx ro quiet splash vt.handoff=715:18
daftykinsok sounds good15:19
daftykinsis there anything unique about how you did the installs? sounds like your working one is a dual boot and the non-working is ubuntu only?15:20
Adriannomdaftykins, both dual boot, can't think of any differences :(15:22
AdriannomBut I guess there might be15:22
AdriannomUsed an installation script but there were a couple of tweaks needed15:22
daftykinsoh o015:23
AdriannomHomebrew script just with apt commands and stuff15:23
AdriannomNothing complex15:23
daftykinsif you run the 'additional drivers' type program are any different choices visible?15:24
daftykinshave you tried wiping the current user entirely and rebooting? the guest session test earlier would only have been helpful if it was the first account logged into on a fresh boot really i think15:24
daftykinsin fact NM might do some system-wide stuff now so even that might be irrelevant15:25
AdriannomNope no difference15:25
AdriannomI haven't tried that15:25
daftykinswouldn't hurt15:25
AdriannomI could just create a user right?15:25
daftykinsyep15:25
daftykinsmake another, make them an admin type, then reboot15:26
AdriannomI was hopeful, but nope15:28
AdriannomSame problem15:29
AdriannomI could try a hammer?15:29
daftykinsdid your script have any removes or purges?15:30
AdriannomYup, I'll show you the script15:31
AdriannomPMed, in case there's anything exploitable in there15:33
Adriannom;)15:34
daftykinsok so you've gotten a script there that's doing a lot of what just installing from xubuntu media would do for you15:36
daftykinsmaybe grab the xu ISO and throw it on, see how it behaves15:36
Adriannomdaftykins, I was hoping to avoid reinstall but if there's nothing else left then I guess I'll have to15:37
daftykinsyou could always run it by the main channel - better eyes in there, but it's down to whether you really want to know the secret or just want it done, i'd say15:37
AdriannomThanks daftykins, appreciate the diagnostics :)15:38
daftykinsnp ^_^15:41
diddledanis it just me, or does the hotel over the abu dhabi f1 circuit look like a giant thingy? https://twitter.com/ManorRacing/status/80145796161694105616:12
