MrCanoehead | Hello? | 02:14 |

anpan | Hello, using lubuntu 16.04 here. Since I updated the packages yesterday, I am unable to boot normally into lubuntu (screen stays black). If I boot into recovery and then select "resume boot" I can enter the passwords for my encrypted SSD and HDDs and log in, but all system dialogs and texts are incredibly small (cant read the text in lxterminal for instance) | 10:27 |
anpan | any suggestions how I can find out what went wrong? it's a bit difficult without a readable console available | 10:27 |
anpan | Its also not showing me the task-bar that's usually at the top | 10:28 |
anpan | selecting the previous kernel in grub also didn't help | 10:29 |
anpan | okay I have narrowed down the Problem now: I have to boot with "nomodeset" or else the screen will stay black. If I execute "modprobe radeon modeset=1", the screen will turn black and I have to reboot. dmesg | egrep 'drm|radeon' says something about UMS not being supported. It was working fine yesterday though | 11:21 |
anpan | I tried searching for that error, but came up with nothing that helped. I don't know what to do anymore | 11:21 |
anpan | it only find one of my two connected screens right now, too | 11:22 |
anpan | and as I said before, the system menu fonts are incredibly small and I cant read them anymore | 11:23 |
Guest34433 | I have a Lubuntu 14.04.4-64.How to turn off auto log on? | 15:06 |
tursiops | Hello everyone | 16:42 |
tursiops | i-ve now tried to install lutuntu several times but each time it crashes at the installation. It says it reports bugs automatically, but i still would like to know if there is way to know what-s wrong | 16:44 |
tursiops | the regular ubuntu installation works fine | 16:44 |
wxl | tursiops: how did you install? | 16:44 |
tursiops | created a live cd downloaded from the website | 16:44 |
wxl | ok great | 16:44 |
tursiops | the live cd part works | 16:44 |
wxl | did you check the hashes of the iso you downloaded? | 16:45 |
tursiops | nope, but i noticed that you can check the disc for defects at boot | 16:45 |
tursiops | should i do that | 16:45 |
wxl | you should really do both | 16:45 |
wxl | 1 single bit of difference can lead to all sorts of strange problems | 16:45 |
tursiops | ok let me redownload then | 16:46 |
tursiops | can i burn a cd while being on the live cd or should i use anothe computer | 16:46 |
wxl | you should be able to. it will just, in general, be slow. | 16:47 |
tursiops | ok im in no hurry | 16:47 |
tursiops | another general question, where does bugs go when they are automatically sent from the installer | 16:48 |
tursiops | just for my curiosity | 16:48 |
wxl | depends on the nature of the situation | 16:48 |
tursiops | ok understand | 16:49 |
wxl | but usually launchpad is the place where bug reports live | 16:49 |
wxl | if a dump is involved (often the case with a true crash), the bug will be marked private initially | 16:49 |
wxl | you might find errors.ubuntu.com interesting | 16:49 |
tursiops | ok, where is the hash from the file on lubuntu, i only can find the link to download but no hash | 16:50 |
wxl | where did you find the link? | 16:50 |
tursiops | on lubuntu.net | 16:51 |
wxl | well, for one, lubuntu.net is not the official website | 16:51 |
wxl | lubuntu.me is | 16:51 |
tursiops | ok... well thats the first website that comes up when typing lubuntu on google... | 16:52 |
wxl | well if you search on duck duck go you'll find it's not the official one | 16:52 |
wxl | but tl;dr | 16:52 |
wxl | you can go here to get the release and the hashes are there too http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/ | 16:53 |
tursiops | ok cancelled that download, retrying on the official site | 16:53 |
wxl | they all point to the same place in the end | 16:53 |
wxl | although the lubuntu.net is outdated | 16:53 |
tursiops | ok thanks i ll wait for it to finish downloading and then check the hash burn it and try again | 16:55 |
wxl | if you still have problems, come back and let us know what version you're on and the specific nature of the crash and we'll go from there. i haven't seen this in the wild so i suspect it's a download and/or copying error (fairly common actually) | 16:55 |
lynorian | burning a live cd while on a live cd would require 2 cd drives | 16:56 |
wxl | oh hahahah yeah that's right XD XD XD | 16:56 |
tursiops | ooooh... ok then i ll have to turn off the live cd and then use another computer to burn it | 16:57 |
wxl | or use a usb | 16:57 |
tursiops | or can i mount the iso and launch the install that way | 16:57 |
tursiops | ok hash is good, creating usb key now | 17:03 |
tursiops | maybe see you later... | 17:04 |
tursiops | Hello its me again.. | 17:17 |
tursiops | its a problem with ubiquity it seems | 17:17 |
tursiops | should i send you some logs, im in the var log folder right now | 17:18 |
wxl | so you checked the hashes of the iso and the image itself when you booted it? | 17:18 |
tursiops | yes | 17:18 |
wxl | what version we talking about? | 17:18 |
tursiops | the last one 16.10 | 17:18 |
wxl | what error did you see? | 17:19 |
tursiops | when i tried to create the portitions with lvm it crashed | 17:19 |
wxl | ah lvm | 17:19 |
tursiops | saying an error with ubiquity and to check the var log folder | 17:19 |
wxl | i seem to remember an error with ubiquity and lvm. lynorian do you remember such a thing? | 17:20 |
tursiops | if i try to install without lvm it works, but then it crashes at the install part | 17:20 |
lynorian | wxl vaguely | 17:20 |
wxl | did you try without lvm on this new disc? | 17:20 |
tursiops | yes it goes further | 17:21 |
tursiops | but then it starts to install | 17:21 |
tursiops | and crashes there | 17:21 |
wxl | define crash | 17:21 |
wxl | what specific errors? | 17:21 |
tursiops | the message says that the installer crashed and that it will be reported to the bug system | 17:21 |
wxl | bah | 17:22 |
wxl | is there an ubiquity log or folder in /var/log? | 17:22 |
wxl | https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1435960 | 17:22 |
ubottu | Launchpad bug 1435960 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "fails on system install, while partitioning disks with LVM" [High,Confirmed] | 17:22 |
wxl | you might want to leave a comment on that saying you experienced the same problem on 16.10 | 17:22 |
tursiops | i see xorg and syslog and a bunch of other logs | 17:23 |
tursiops | but no one called ubiquity | 17:23 |
wxl | k check out the end of syslog and see if there's anything telling there | 17:24 |
tursiops | yeah lots of error saying all pretty much the same | 17:26 |
tursiops | Error retrieving chunk extents | 17:26 |
wxl | why don't you pastebin the entirety of the log? | 17:26 |
wxl | the system might let you install pastebinit which will make it easy | 17:26 |
tursiops | ok how do you pastebin, never done that before | 17:27 |
wxl | sudo apt install pastebinit && cat /var/log/syslog | pastebinit | 17:27 |
wxl | it will return a url | 17:27 |
tursiops | http://paste.ubuntu.com/23538617/ | 17:29 |
tursiops | http://paste.ubuntu.com/23538617/ | 17:29 |
tursiops | http://paste.ubuntu.com/23538617/ | 17:29 |
lynorian | wxl know if this affects debian installer images? | 17:29 |
wxl | lynorian: no that would be good to check | 17:29 |
tursiops | ive tried with a regular ubuntu iso and it works just fine | 17:29 |
tursiops | with lvm and all | 17:29 |
wxl | tursiops: thanks. we can look at that. meanwhile, to get you going, i'd get the alternate installer | 17:29 |
tursiops | ok i ll do that then | 17:30 |
tursiops | if its any help im using a asus e200ha | 17:30 |
