dabblers-buffetHello, I am experiencing problems with Kdenlive on Ubuntu 16.04 with the MATE desktop.00:30
dabblers-buffetCan someone help me?00:31
EriC^^dabblers-buffet: what problems?00:31
kw1234EriC^^: Installing for x86_64-efi platform. \n Installation finished. No error reported.00:31
dabblers-buffetIt is a problem with the window, ok, you know how with every application there's a minimize, maximize and close window option?00:31
dabblers-buffetKdenlive does not have that.00:31
kw1234EriC^^: so, seems OK00:31
dabblers-buffetIn fact, I have a screenshot of it too.00:31
EriC^^kw1234: ok, cool00:31
EriC^^kw1234: run update-grub then try efibootmgr -v00:32
dabblers-buffetEriC^^: http://imgur.com/a/NEzEy00:32
yorwoseric^^: i cant find any .out or .pcm extensions in photorec , but it has an option for "Own custom signatures" do you think this would work ?00:33
dabblers-buffetLook at the top of Kdenlive, it does not list the project's profile and you cannot minimize, close, or maximize the window.00:33
EriC^^dabblers-buffet: that's odd00:34
dabblers-buffetYeah, it is.00:34

EriC^^yorwos: yes00:34
dabblers-buffetI tried the repo's default version of Kdenlive and the official one from the Kdenlive website.00:34
EriC^^yorwos: do you have another file that has the same headers as your file?00:34
dabblers-buffetThey made no difference in fixing the issue regardless of changing versions.00:34
EriC^^kw1234: looks good00:35
yorwosi got another 2 files made by same application , dunno what headers are exactly .... !00:35
EriC^^kw1234: type exit then try rebooting00:35
EriC^^kw1234: make sure uefi mode is selected in the bios00:35
dabblers-buffetEriC^^: Ok, I just tried that, it says I can only Minimize. Options to maximize or close doesn't work, they are grayed out.00:36
EriC^^yorwos: headers are the start of the file, like let's say an mp3 file all start as "mp3.bla.bla.actual.song.here"00:36

grekkoswell I'm just trying to get network connection to the host machine now02:56
grekkosit was working yesterday02:56
reisioapply time machine, problem solved02:57
reisioany virtual guests might be relying on the assumption that the device name during installation remains, that's one problem02:57
reisioas for the host, it should show up in /sys/class/net; but setting net.ifnames=0 is definitely worthwhile if you have only one network device02:58
grekkosreisio: where do I set that exactly02:58
reisiogrekkos: know how to get to the GRUB screen during bootup?03:00
grekkosreisio: I have the GRUB screen there by default, yeah. I forget how to edit the options on it. Is it just a kernel option (I think that's what they're called)03:00
reisiogrekkos: it'll say how to edit it at the bottom of the screen, just press any key (arrow keys are good) to ensure the timeout is nullified when you see the screen03:01
reisiogrekkos: find the default entry (first if unspecified / 0 = first if otherwise)03:01
reisiogrekkos: find its line that starts with 'linux', and add ' net.ifnames=0' to the end of that line, then boot03:01
reisioif it works, you can add it permanently03:01
grekkosreisio: alright, assuming this works, how do I make that permanent? there's a grub config somewhere I can edit once I'm booted in right?03:02

OerHekse indeed, but for most people it works fine03:06
reisiogrekkos: is it something separate from the mobo? You might just make sure it's re/seated properly03:07
reisioand since network cable connectors tend to be cheap crap, you might just make sure even if it _is_ on the mobo03:07
reisioalso: check the other (router) end03:07
reisioalthough obviously that end wouldn't explain the device not even showing up :)03:08

reisiohal-mb: you can try sudo mount -o remount,rw /mnt/point afterwards05:43

[TiZ]Okay so now I've got a weird thing. I'm trying to restore a backup onto a new computer. LightDM isn't starting. Whenever I try to start it, it freezes the framebuffer. Nothing is logged in any of the files under /var/log/lightdm. What should I do to diagnose this?05:48
reisio[TiZ]: is lightdm running? ps aux | grep -i lightdm05:48
RxMcDonaldthe only reason for this computer to work is because it doesnt have ubuntu inside of the computer logic gates05:48
reisioRxMcDonald: right05:49
[TiZ]reisio: Right now, it's not. I have disabled it through systemctl, and can start it manually. When I do though, the framebuffer freezes up and becomes completely inoperable.05:49
reisio[TiZ]: and you can't CTRL+ALT+F2, even?05:49
[TiZ]reisio: That is correct.05:50
reisio[TiZ]: and lightdm is on the new or old computer?05:50
[TiZ]reisio: Both? I've been backing up to a ssh server through rsync, and I restored that backup by going in the other direction.05:51
RxMcDonaldmy networks engineers team tells me that we need to fix the ubuntu computer otherwise we don't have enough computers for computing05:52
RxMcDonaldi have a team of network computers engineers working 24/7 to increase ubuntu computing but it's not enough, now we need another team to create more computer code for ubuntu because most of the ubuntu code is not good for computers05:54

[TiZ]Okay, so I discovered something unfortunate. That rsync backup I'm doing over ssh, it uses --fake-super so I don't have to be root to do the backup. So it turns out that the userids on the source laptop doing the backup don't match on the destination. For example, on the source computer, lightdm was 110, but on the the destination computer, it's 107. So now the ownerships are all jacked up, which is why I can't start lightdm. How can I fix th06:11

DarsVaedablackflow: yeah I got that ;)15:10

KlausedSourcehey guys, i got a question. i got a network printer. i want 1 spool for 1 kind of paper and another 1 for the other kind. the printer always has both kinds of paper. when i install a printer with cups i need to enter the IP. can i just go and make a "duplicate" entry with the same IP15:12
DarsVaedahmm, well later they say log in as Magento file system owner, which is not www-data, and do chmod15:12
DarsVaedabut that's not possible then15:13
blackflowDarsVaeda: it's possible to "inherit" all that with umasks, so the files created by "www-data:www-data" process, will create files that have g+w already applied.15:13
DarsVaedaI guess that is what that part of the docu wants to do15:13
DarsVaedaI'm also getting permission errors with www-data changing the group of files and folders -.-15:14
blackflowsure, if www-data doesn't own them....15:15
blackflowbtw, this sounds like you've got two different installation procedures going on15:15
blackflowtypically, a web app will run as some user X and only as that one user. X can be "www-data" by default.15:15
Kingsyblackflow: what about driver issues? or software misconfiguration? those will be logged in there right?15:15
DarsVaedablackflow: the files in question are also -rw-rw-r-- www-data www-data15:16
blackflowDarsVaeda: so the wep app has full ownership rights over the files created as the process it runs as15:16
blackflowDarsVaeda: ah so the question is, who owns the PHP process15:16
blackflowKingsy: maybe, probably.15:16
Kingsyalright, well its worth a shot15:17
blackflowKingsy: journald logs all that syslog did before systemd. so whatever gets sent to it, will get logged. Not all programs will log to syslog/journald tho'15:17
blackflowKingsy: but in case of kernel panics, hardware issues, etc... it should all be logged yes.15:17

DarsVaedaand now I try to set the permissions as the docu states15:25
blackflowDarsVaeda: Well, you pretty much have only two options. Assuming PHP process will be run as "www-data":   1) install and own all Magento files as "root", except writable dirs that are root:www-data owned and chmod to 770     or 2) install and own all Magento files as "www-data" in which case it doesn't matter how you chmod them, defaults 755 dirs and 644 files are okay.   Now, personally, I'd recommend15:27

nedbatThis script adds a user to sudoers.d, and also to the sudo group: https://github.com/vadviktor/packer-vagrant-box-u1604x64/blob/master/scripts/base.sh#L15-L17  Are both steps necessary? They seem like they accomplish the same thing.15:56
ikoniadepends on how you want to use sudo15:56
ikoniaI'd question why you need a script for that15:56
ikoniamore so if you're using an image in vagrant15:56
DarsVaedablackflow: I can't even set permissions as root to those files15:57

ocx32_thats the part i am not understanding16:05

ikoniabecause you don't need to interact with it, so there is no need for a tty to act as "window" to the shell16:06

raul782hi guys, my ubuntu stopped working19:21
\9raul782: define "stopped working", what exactly doesn't work?19:22
\9does it not start?19:22
MonkeyDustraul782  more specifically...19:22
raul782hard drive is emitting this errors, blk_update_request: I/O error19:22
raul782I've just fsck all my partitions19:22
\9your hard drive is dead19:22
\9or at least dying19:22
raul782I'm in maintenance mode19:23
\9try to back up whatever you can19:23
raul782I've been able to recover from bad sectors for years.19:23
\9so.. you've been using a failing hard drive for years?19:23
nacchrm, 'recovering from bad sectors' seems like a bad choice19:23
raul782yeah, this drive is like 6 years old19:23
\9it's busted19:23
naccyou should have immediately backed up the disk, then bought a new disk19:23
raul782ok, I already have 2 other drives attached19:24
\9i would suggest running smartctl on the two other then19:25
\9find out if they're going to go out too19:25
\9"sudo smartctl -a", that is19:25
raul782that's what I want to do, but smartctl is not installed19:26
\9smartctl, afaik, comes installed by default19:26
\9you can also use a live session19:26
raul782Ic, I believe I have an issue with my zsh shell19:26
raul782I've just tried to mkdir a folder and zsh said that the command was not found19:27
\9or maybe it's not found because your disk is dying19:27
\9try ls /bin/mkdir19:27

jaithhi everyone...hoping i can ask a question about inotifywait here?19:30
\9i don't see what's so weird. your hard drive is dead and your files are disappearing19:30
=== Kazuto is now known as Guest56401
\9along with system programs19:30
BusFactor1sure19:30
jaithI can use inotifywait to monitor file access/changes in my home directory just fine19:31
raul782I'll install my ubuntu on my other hard drive, which is newer barely used19:31
Hensteriis there a general issue whit Networking on the ubuntu server ?19:31
jaithbut when i try to monitor the entire file system, the command just...quits? stops listening...19:31
jaithinotifywait -mr / -e access -e create -e close_write -e modify -e move -e delete --timefmt "%Y%m%d%H%M%S" --format "%Tw:%wf:%f e:%e" 2>&-19:31
jaiththat command quits after 1-2 seconds19:31
BusFactor1jaith: it's recursing through the entire directory tree...basically too many files19:32
BusFactor1jaith: each directory requires initialzation to be watched, so the more files/directories you are watching the longer it will take to setup the watches19:32
jaithBusFactor1: it quits with no error message and returns to a new prompt after 1-2 seconds...would too many files cause a timeout or something? there's no error message19:32
=== Guest56401 is now known as Kazuhiro
jaithBusFactor1: it's not "hanging"...the command returns immediately with no error message19:33

=== Kazuhiro is now known as Kazuto
jaithBusFactor1: that's kinda what i was thinking19:33
BusFactor1or fifos maybe?19:33
jaithBusFactor1: can you suggest some means to monitor *any* changes on my files system? I'm trying to figure out ALL changes made when I install Compuser19:33
jaithBusFactor1: trying to burnish my security cred by monitoring changes made by various installers19:34
BusFactor1jaith: i'm suspecting some sort of FUSE overlay unionfs file system might be in order19:34
jaithBusFactor1: some have suggested samhain or aide, but I was hoping for some simple command to run on a VM. Also want to monitor network requests19:34
BusFactor1at least then you can overlay over top of your root file system and all writes will be put somewhere else that coulbe be monitored19:35
jaithBusFactor1: whoa that's greek to me.19:35
BusFactor1just a sec, i might be able to find something19:35
jaithBusFactor1: curious about reads also...want to know if installer is reading sensitive files.19:35
BusFactor1ah, yes19:35
BusFactor1here's something about unionfs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnionFS19:36
BusFactor1jaith: this might come in handy https://launchpad.net/fatrace19:38
BusFactor1it logs all file access events from running processes19:38
BusFactor1so you could probably just filter on the pid of your installer19:38
jaithUnionFS looks tricky. Not sure how that solves the problem?19:40
jaithfatrace looks pretty awesome, but seems a bit ironic that I would install a package to figure out what file actions are taken by my packages19:40
jaithBusFactor1: do you think PID filter would be comprehensive enough? Mightnt the installer fork off a new process?19:41
BusFactor1i'm thinking that has been taken into consideration with the program somehow, but i can't say i've used it directly before to know19:42
BusFactor1Yes, unionfs won't give you what you need, my mistaken idea :)19:42
jaithaha...just had realization. took off the 2>&- at the end and see an error now: "Please increase the amount of inotify watches allowed per user via `/proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches'"19:45
mcphailjaith: Have a look at firejail to see if it does what you need. Inotify has an upper limt19:45

BusFactor1 /dev and /proc19:49

glitchdhow can i log into a machine and pass the login screen (lightdm) on a machine the has no physical keyboard, but i have ssh access to?19:52
jaith\9: I think I've seen PHP configurations that write session files to somewhere in /tmp19:54
\9well.. yeah19:54
\9/tmp is RAM19:54
FinalXwhich they shouldn't and wouldn't in a default config in debian or ubuntu19:54
jaithBusFactor1: /sys doesn't seem to be a problem19:54
jaithBusFactor1: nor does /proc19:55
FinalX /tmp _can_ be RAM but often isn't, /run is19:56
BusFactor1glitchd: ssh in, use openvt to open a new console and then Ctrl-Alt-Fn for whatever console you have openened19:56
jaithBusFactor1: oh wait maybe /proc is a problem...lots of activity there19:56
\9jaith: /sys and /proc aren't hard drive directories, but kernel API19:56
BusFactor1yes, lots of stuff goes on in proc all the time being a virtual file system19:56
jaithok ok got it19:56
BusFactor1jaith: oops, nno keyboard, nm19:56
BusFactor1oops, wrong person haha, glitchd i mean19:57
jaithso exclude /proc, /run it seems need to be excluded19:57
BusFactor1glitchd: then, use switchvt to switch to the new vt...i think that would work19:57
jaithany thoughts on which dirs DEFINITELY need to be watched? I'm thinking /etc and /var19:57
BusFactor1when installing a package? /etc, /var, /usr, /tmp at least19:58
BusFactor1 /home if you're concerned about things being written to your home directory19:58
\9/bin and /sbin19:59
\9and /lib19:59
FinalXexclude /var/run, it's a symlink to /run, though technically it's a different filesystem so notify wouldn't trigger20:00

CaptainQuirkEriC^^, could not boot on ubuntu without going through the f9 procedure21:53
Richard_CavellThe only remaining option is to try to boot into debian, download unetbootin, use that to burn the iso to the USB stick.  Do you think that will work when the DVD won't?21:53
EriC^^CaptainQuirk: same firmware screen?21:54

jukemHey all, so this probably isnt the BEST place to ask this, but I don't really know too many people that are into super low-level compiler stuff.  But, what's the point of restoring the stack pointer when a child procedure is done executing?21:56
EriC^^CaptainQuirk: try sudo efibootmgr -A -b 000121:57
EriC^^CaptainQuirk: that should disable the windows efi21:57
jukemI understand that the child procedure stores the value of current stack pointer, then the child executes, but then it restores the stack_pointer to where it was before the child even started.  Why?21:57
EriC^^CaptainQuirk: sudo efibootmgr -a -b 0001 enables it back if you need it in the future21:57
CaptainQuirkok21:57
CaptainQuirkin case I need to get the computer back for maintenance or anything21:58
naccjukem: 1) probable ask in a programming channel (see !alis); 2) if you didn't restore the sp, where would the caller's sp point?21:58
CaptainQuirkEric^^, it's working now !21:58
EriC^^CaptainQuirk: great21:59
jukemnacc:  Wouldn't it point to the end of the child procedure?  Cause doesn't the parent procedure just decrement the stack_pointer to after the child procedure anyway after the child is done executing?21:59
naccjukem: you're speaking rather abstractly about something concrete -- do you mean for a specific language and compiler?22:00
jukemIf I had to guess, C.  I'm learning this kind of stuff in my compilers class at my university but classes are so impacted its difficult to talk to the professor directly about this kind of stuff.22:01
jukemPlus the book I'22:02
jukemm reading was written in the 80's so they refer to stuff like Fortran a lot22:02
jukemnacc: sorry for the vague-ness, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the big picture concept22:03
naccjukem: https://www.cs.umd.edu/class/sum2003/cmsc311/Notes/Mips/stack.html  the section on functions?22:03
NoImNotNineVoltjukem: your question is language-agnostic.22:03
NoImNotNineVoltit's a question about binary code, not source code.22:04
carl-ericHi! How can I find out which of the harddisks in my system the "automatic" partition mode in ubiquity wants to target? I'm trying to have an encrypted LVM installation, and since the text mode installer seems to not work properly with UEFI anymore I seem to be stuck with Ubiquity. Its "manual" mode doesn't allow me to set up LVM though. What can I do?22:04
jukemWell, we've been using some flex and bison.22:04
jukemthe book does mention yes that this procedure varies a lot between languages22:04
NoImNotNineVoltfundamentally, i believe you're asking how procedures/subroutines are called.22:04
Jordan_Ujukem: Try #compilers22:05
NoImNotNineVoltthat's probably a good suggestion.22:05
NoImNotNineVoltit's been a while, but.... are you sure you mean to ask about the stack pointer and not the program counter?22:06
jukemJordan_U: Man, there's a channel for everything lol.  It's just a bummer when channels are a barren wasteland.  That's why my first instinct was to hop over here lol, it's always poppin'22:07
jukemNoImNotNineVolt: Yeah it's definitely the stack pointer22:07
NoImNotNineVoltthe stack pointer is only incremented or decremented when things are pushed/popped to/from the stack22:07
NoImNotNineVoltso, at a fundamental level, here's how a procedure is called:22:08
NoImNotNineVoltprogram counter is pushed to stack. arguments are pushed to stack. program counter is overwritten with procedure address. procedure pops arguments off stack, executes.22:09
=== mpo is now known as mpo42vr
mpo42vrubuntu-server22:09
NoImNotNineVoltthen it pops the value from the stack and stores to program counter.22:09
NoImNotNineVoltthat's how it returns.22:09
NoImNotNineVoltthe stack pointer is incremented and decremented as a result of the stack operations only.22:09
NoImNotNineVoltoverwriting the stack pointer would effectively destroy the stack (practically, if not technically).22:11
younderNoImNotNineVolt, Would that be the execution stack or the data stack..22:12
NoImNotNineVoltyounder: that's now an architecture-specific question.22:12
NoImNotNineVoltthe question as asked implied the existence of only a single stack pointer.22:13
jukemWell, there's two pointers they mention.  top_sp and top22:13
jukemI think top_sp is more local and top is the "actual" top of stack22:13
NoImNotNineVoltwhat architecture is this?22:13
jukemhere's a screen grab from my book, http://imgur.com/GK39cuv22:14
NoImNotNineVoltugh, what is this :P22:14
jukemIm confused about why the sp needs to be restored.  Cause, from what I understand, the sp is decremented to an address after the child process anyway22:14
jukemLOL it's a book written in 198622:15
NoImNotNineVoltso, you can do fun things with stacks :P22:15
jukemIm not askin' for homework help or anything, I just really like this kind of stuff and want to have a deeper understanding22:15
jukemlol yes indeed22:15
NoImNotNineVoltso, what i described is the basic (very, very basic) description of how the simplest of computers is likely to handle procedure calls.22:16
NoImNotNineVoltthe pic16 architecture works that way, if i remember correctly.22:16
NoImNotNineVoltbut pic16 only has one general register and one stack pointer and is generally speaking a very very simply computer :P22:17
Jordan_UNoImNotNineVolt: jukem: Please move this discussion to another channel, like #compilers or #ubuntu-offtopic.22:17
NoImNotNineVoltgotcha, sorry.22:17
jukemJordan_U: will do.   I was just gettin' on a roll.22:17
jukemThanks for knowledge guys :) 'ppreciate ya.22:17

Richard_CavellJordan_U: Is there any way of explaining why Debian boots just fine on my iMac but Ubuntu and Mint do not?22:21
Jordan_URichard_Cavell: I don't know why that is the case. If the Debian DVD boots via EFI though, then it's not terribly difficult to use Debian's grub to boot Ubuntu's installer.22:26
Richard_CavellJordan_U: Even once it installs, I need it to boot reliably22:26
Richard_CavellI might just have to use debian *shrug*22:27
Jordan_URichard_Cavell: I expect that booting once installed will be fine, but I can't guarantee that 100%.22:27
Richard_CavellFunnily enough I might end up installing Debian and then virtualizing Ubuntu within it...22:30

jimjdjjdi, as long as linux can mount the / vol or partition, you can boot with lvm23:03
jimGuest99677, you don't actually need a dvd full of packages... what are you trying to do?\23:04
jdjjdiSo I don't need an extra boot partition, do I?23:04
jimI like to have /boot as a separate partition not in lvm, but I don't think you need to do that23:05

jimit's mostly about what drivers are available to you at boot time... if you have the necessary drivers to mount /, you should be ok23:07
jimI think people like using ext4 (it's a posix compatible fs, and it's pretty fast)23:08
jdjjdiYes, but it can run out of inodes23:08
jimis there a fs that doesn't do that?23:09
jdjjdintfs has no inodes, btrfs has no inodes23:09
jimjdjjdi, you should probably rule out ntfs, it's not compatible... however, you can mount ntfs filesystems23:11
jimbtrfs, I don't know how stable it is23:11
jimI've heard some scary stuff23:12
jdjjdiit was just en example of fses not making user to preselect number of inodes23:12

ajajHello, every package I try to install with apt-get gives me a mismatched hash error. Updating and upgrading didnt resolve it, I've tried the most reliable answer I could find online without success, any help much appreciated23:30
Bashing-omajaj: Many times it is your mirror site that has not sync'd up . Try and change your mirror and see if the problem persist .23:32
ajajSounds good, I'll try that. Thanks a lot for your help23:33
Bashing-omajaj: :) Let is know how it goes . ^ may not be the reason. just a good possibility and needs to be ruled out .23:34
jdjjdiI'm moving data from ntfs to some linux fs. What should I do if that fs were ext4? Should I select number of inodes for full size or inodes count will grow with the partition size?23:36
jdjjdip.s. I'm going to move the data and shrink ntfs and extend the fs.23:38
Bashing-omjdjjdi: The number of inodes is set when the partition is created for ext4 . You should not have to do anything . Now if it is a whole bunch of little bitty files . Mwy then have to get creative .23:39
jdjjdiso should i calculate them manually using the full target size of partition and set explicitly?23:42
wedgiejdjjdi: unless you have an unusual data set you can safely use the defaults23:43
wedgieunusual meaning, as Bashing-om said, many many small files23:43
Jordan_Ujdjjdi: Select a number appropriate for the full volume size, and how you expect to use that volume.23:44
