=== bluesabre_ is now known as bluesabre === dreamon_ruhe is now known as dreamon [11:41] Hi. How can I get rid of tearing? I'm using HD 530 graphics. Enabling Compton didn't help. === PaulW2U_ is now known as PaulW2U [19:40] g'day all [19:42] I got Xubuntu 16.04 installed on an old computer (designed to run Vista, hah) that has a dual-core processor and less than 1GB of RAM installed. [19:58] hola.... [19:58] ando aburrido.... [19:59] * ball waves [19:59] estoy probando raring ringtail.... [19:59] !raring [19:59] Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) was the 18th release of Ubuntu. Support ended on January 27, 2014. See !eol, !upgrade and http://ubottu.com/y/raring [20:00] ah ok, si entiendo que es end of life.... [20:05] Can a Xubuntu ISO be dumped onto a flash drive and booted from on a PC? [20:05] (I'm looking at amd64, though I may end up using i386) [20:06] sure [20:07] Thanks Pici [20:10] solamente una pregunta... [20:11] !es [20:11] En la mayoría de los canales de Ubuntu, se habla sólo en inglés. Si busca ayuda en español entre al canal #ubuntu-es; escriba " /join #ubuntu-es " (sin comillas) y presione intro. [20:11] gracias.... [20:11] bueno, me retiro.... [20:13] You done scared him off! [20:14] Oh no, he or she went to #xubuntu-es [20:40] Are the system requirements any lighter for i386? [20:52] I've heard that requirements are lighter for i386 machines, don't have evidence to back that claim up. [20:52] I'm running Xubuntu 16.04 on a 32-bit machine though.. [20:53] This machine is on the lower end of the hardware spectrum (only 1GB of RAM), but it's quite snappy with XFCE. :D [20:53] Hmm... ok. [20:54] http://i.imgur.com/uNl4jii.png [20:55] I don't do any serious work on this machine. I just use it for web browsing and spreadsheets. [20:58] * ball nods [20:58] My test rigs are even lower-end than that, though I have some more capable boxes sitting idle in storage,. [20:59] Oh wow... at least there's always LXDE, i3, Openbox, etc.. [21:00] I do think XFCE is a lot more appealing to look at than LXDE, but Openbox can be made into something quite nice to look at. [21:00] I think once LXQt replaces LXDE, that might be something work using. :P [21:01] Dunno if the tests are true or not, but the LXQt devs checked how much RAM the DE used and it was actually using less mem than XFCE.. [21:02] https://blog.lxde.org/2016/10/04/benchmark-memory-usage-lxqt-desktop-environment-vs-xfce/ [21:03] I found it interesting that Cinnamon actually uses more RAM than GNOME 3 in that test.. [21:13] i've tried debian with some of those DE's and found it to be feelin incomplete from a proper get go DE. I just keep running back to xubuntu/linuxlite. [21:14] the only debian that came close is the MXlinux [21:14] I tried out SparkyLinux... it's okay. [21:15] It was good for reviving an old laptop with an Atom CPU. [21:15] ..that was originally running Windows XP on it. [21:15] Even THAT took forever to boot... SparkyLinux on the other hand? It took less than a minute. [21:15] To be on the desktop! [21:16] I don't really like tiling wms btw... XFCE is a great DE that takes a very short amount of time to customize. [21:17] I keep getting tempted to try out tiling wms because of r/unixporn, but ehhh [21:43] hi all :) [21:43] I just installed openbox on my machine from a server version of ubuntu only [21:43] how can I start openbox, simply typing "startx" does not do the trick [21:46] This might be a good question to ask in #ubuntu, but I will try my hands at some Google-Fu for you. [21:47] http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Getting_started#Starting_Openbox_without_the_graphical_log_in [21:47] This wasn't recently updated, but it might still work for you! [21:48] yup, was trying to login to ubuntu but got into ubuntu-unregged [21:48] aka, to many users [21:49] I tried that command too from ur page, but got an error [21:49] https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2259345 [21:49] https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/openbox [21:49] Arch Wiki to the rescue [22:02] got it working now, required some fucking around but anyway it works [22:03] That's good. I didn't think Openbox was that hard to set up on Ubuntu... then again, I've never tried the server distribution... does it only come with Unity or just a plain 'ol CLI? [22:09] server edition is just CLI, its not really hard, I just never used openbox and I am not that familiar with the whole xorg thing [22:34] Does Xubuntu support (and boot from) software RAID-1? [22:34] ball: absolutely [22:35] xubuntu is just an desktop environment nothing more, ubuntu with the kernel is what makes the hardware work. ubuntu supports RAID-1 and thus it will all work [22:35] Thanks prtg02. Does the installer make that straightforward or is there some jiggery-pokery involved? [22:35] ball: not sure on that one, never used RAID-1 with the installer like that [22:37] Still, it's useful information. Thank you. [22:38] :) no problem [22:41] * ball waits patiently for the Xubuntu DVD to burn. [22:56] Oh dear. Xubuntu (and perhaps Linux generally) won't work on my 32-bit test rig. [22:56] ...and I don't have time to try the 64-bit one. [22:56] Perhaps tomorrow. [22:57] Is your computer using the 64-bit or 32-bit architecture? I think things will work better if you install the OS accordingly. Also, do you know if your computer has AMD, Intel, or Nvidia graphics?
