PickledEggsCan I add the root partition that I have ubuntu installed on to a volume group and then logical volume?02:03
ikoniaPickledEggs: ?02:04
ikonianot sure what you're' asking02:04
PickledEggsjust adding the current partition that unbuntu is running from to a volume group with another partition to create an LVM with a total size of both partitions02:05
ikoniaPickledEggs: NO02:05
PickledEggsI could live boot and just extend the size of the root partition, but I was considering playing with setting up volume groups and LVMS02:05
ikoniathe answer is "no"02:06
PickledEggsyeah, I suspected that would be the case02:06
PickledEggsso now I have to stand up and go find a usb drive to boot from, oh well :) thanks.02:06
easyOnMehello everyone02:17
easyOnMejust need some help02:17
easyOnMeI am using Filezilla and to make filetype associations02:17
easyOnMei am using this "Home/Documents/PhpStorm/bin/./phpstorm.sh" as the path but filezilla keeps on saying associated program not found which is impossible as I am usign PhpStorm right now02:18
easyOnMeplease help as why filezilla cannot find the path when I activate that same path I was able to run PhpStorm02:18
wedgietried using the full path?02:19
easyOnMewedgie: yup02:21
wedgiewhat's the full path?02:22
wedgieas entered in your configuration02:22
easyOnMesame as the one I pasted above02:22
wedgiethen you didn't use a full path02:22
Jordan_UeasyOnMe: Why do you have bin/./phpstorm.sh rather than just bin/phpstorm.sh? (They should be equivalent, but the first is rather odd).02:22
wedgieabsolute paths start with a /02:22
easyOnMeJordan_U: that is how I did it with the previous time I did it02:23
=== Kirito is now known as Trump

=== Trump is now known as Kirito
wedgieeasyOnMe: more like /home/<username>/Documents....02:24
easyOnMewedgie: let me try that now02:24
wedgienot sure if filezilla does tilda expansion. Quite likely it does but i don't want to make any assumptions02:24
easyOnMewedgie: still the same02:25
easyOnMeit says Associated program not found02:26
easyOnMewhich is really crazy02:26
easyOnMeI am using ubuntu 16.04 LTS02:26
Jordan_UeasyOnMe: "." as a filename is always the same directory you're already at in a path, so "/home/jordan/bin/phpsotrm.sh" is equivalent to "/home/jordan/./bin/phpstorm.sh" and also equivalent to "/././home/./././jordan/bin/./././././phpstorm.sh".02:26
easyOnMefilezilla is the latest version02:26
easyOnMeJordan_U: ok let me try that out too02:26
easyOnMeJordan_U: still the same message02:27
easyOnMeassociated program not found02:27
easyOnMeJordan_U: ok I got it02:28
easyOnMewedgie: thanks too man02:28

Jordan_Usiorai: Unfortunately wifi drivers for USB dongles are often in poor shape. If you can, get an Atheros or Intel based internal wireless card.02:41

ubottuThe core of Ubuntu is the Linux kernel: see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel - You shouldn't have to compile your own, and if you need to troubleshoot issues, you can try a !Mainline kernel instead, but if you insist, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile (see also !Stages)02:51

maddawg2there was something changed with microsoft04:34
maddawg2glitchd, what?04:34
glitchdmaddawg2, is he currently booted in linux?04:34
maddawg2well no he just booted from the win7 usb he created04:35
maddawg2he used some tool in linux to make it tho04:35
maddawg2the same tool he tried to make a windows 10 bootable usb from04:35
maddawg2that failed04:35
glitchdmaddawg2, i believe i used dd the other day to make a windows 10 usb and reinstalled with it04:35
glitchdmaddawg2, the tools dont work for whatever reason, but dd did04:36
maddawg2yea also it depends on where you got the iso04:36
maddawg2like if it's a vlsc04:36
xanguaNow thanks to you he's gonna come and ask how to fix grub next04:36
maddawg2or an upgrade04:36
maddawg2(like the ISO you download druing the "free upgrade" process04:36
glitchdxangua, that sounds like complaining.04:37
glitchdmaddawg2, tell him to use this to make a windows 10 usb "sudo dd if=/location/of/Windows.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M"04:39
maddawg2i think he's gonna try using the first tool u suggested then that04:39
maddawg2his iso is actually a dreamspark one04:40
maddawg2not sure if it's different than the retail or the vlsc04:40
glitchdnever heard of a dreamspark iso..04:40
maddawg2microsoft dreamspark?04:40
maddawg2never heard of it?04:40
glitchdyep never heard of it04:40

TsukushieWas wondering if someone could help me with a linux distro install that seems to be running into a lot of issues?05:02
morfTsukushie: dont' ask about ask, just ask05:03
morfand don't repeat the questions please... if somebody knows the answer and want answer they will... thanks05:03
SlyverTsukushie, describe the issues05:03
Tsukushiekk, sorry. Was not sure if my question was going through it kept telling me I had not registered.05:03
BlackDalekanyone know anything about hdd boot setup? I swapped my ubuntu hdd out of broken hp laptop temporarily into a working dell laptop. Laptop keeps saying no bootable media on disk. If I boot ubuntu on the Dell from an external drive with Ubuntu 15.04, then I can see the disk properties for the swapped drive. Seems to be 3 partitions: EFI, EXT4 and SWAP. None have a bootable flag set. EFI partition appears to contain grub c05:05
BlackDalekonfig files.05:05
BlackDalekEFI partition contains grub.cfg, grubx64.efi, MokManger.efi and shimx64.efi05:07
TsukushieI am installing Ubuntu to a external HDD using a live USB that I have plugged into my desktop. I go through the process of installing ensuring I am connected to the internet and using gparted to properly align the hard drive, but after booting to the hard drive I run into issues grub, vfs, and other stuff. Now I am running into an issue with the booted linux not recognizing my broadcom proprietary driver. I have looked through foru05:10
engineer-pearlOkay I got one set of problems fixed, but I have another. I want to run a command at startup as me (crontab can only do that as SU), so I tried using runuser, which gave me the error "/bin/sh: 1: runuser: not found"05:11
engineer-pearlMost sites are reccomending I use "sudo" which is going the opposite direction05:12
BlackDalekWhy won't my drive from the HP laptop boot in the Dell laptop?05:12
BlackDalekI've disabled secure boot and UEFI in BIOS.05:12

kushal_kumaranayogi: look into the logs inside /var/log/upstart.  There should be files for each service there.  I don't have a 14.04 installation handy so can't check myself.05:28
ayogikushal_kumaran, there are no files for ssh05:30

UniFreakI installed nginx, stopped apache by running `service apache2 stop`06:54
UniFreakbut a weird thing happen, when I access my site `mysite.vbox` from my host machine, sometime it is normal, sometime it give me 404 error page generated by apache06:55
UniFreakI inspected the respond header, the server is still apache06:55
UniFreakand when it's normal, the server header is nginx06:56
UniFreakhow can that happen06:56

svipAfter upgrading to 16.04, I've noticed a tendency for X to get incredibly slow.06:57
svipRight now, X is constantly using 100% CPU.06:57
reisiosvip: according to what?06:58
svipAccording to htop.06:58
reisioUniFreak: why in a VM?06:58
svipMore specifically; /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg06:59
hiyawhen I do06:59
hiyasudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf06:59

UniFreakreisio: I'm on Windows07:01
reisioI'm sure you can run nginx directly on Windows07:02
reisioespecially if you hate yourself, which you clearly do if you run Windows :p07:02
svipreisio: I am convinced some program fucks up X for one reason or another, which leaves it in a state where it is just consistently slow.07:04

reisiosvip: look to your graphics driver first07:05
reisiosvip: and/or the specific linux version you're using with it07:05
Triffid_HunterUniFreak: sounds like you have two VMs that respond to that name, and windows randomly picks one each time07:06
svipreisio: I am using nvidia-367 on 4.4.0-53.07:07
UniFreakTriffid_Hunter: how can I make sure of that?07:07
reisiosvip: try nouveau07:08
UniFreakTriffid_Hunter: I do have two vagrant box, bot have the same private ip, but the other is not even started07:08
Triffid_HunterUniFreak: no idea, windows is hard mode.. try ping, it should report the ip it gets from your OS's DNS subsystem07:09
UniFreakI don't know. I just removed the other vagrant box by running `vagrant box remove thatBox`07:16
UniFreaknow seems it's stable07:17
UniFreakI'm not sure...07:17
joegiampaoliWhy are interface names now like "enp0s20u3" and "enp3s0" and "wlp2s0" instead of "usb0" "eth0" and "wlan0" and is this the norm now?07:18

hateballjoe_giampaoli: but as you can see in the link, you can revert to the old behavior if you like07:37
joe_giampaolihateball: Yes, I see it is the norm now, I guess it's OK, I can live with it, maybe :P Thanks anyway! Really appreciate the answer!07:38
Dr_CokeHow's it going hateball07:54
avoiderIs there a way to remove grub? so i can install windows back on my machine.07:56
Dr_CokeYeah sure there is07:57
avoiderWell im having issues for 4 hours now.07:57
avoiderEverything else will boot from usb i,e linux07:57
avoiderWindows will not boot at all.07:57
avoiderGives me the error "Boot device not found"07:57
Dr_CokeActually if you delete the partition grubs on it will wipe it off if your computer is in uefi mode but if grub is on the mbr07:57
Dr_Cokeyou can insert the windows disk boot it up into setup and go to terminal07:58
avoiderProblem is07:58
Dr_Cokeand wipe the mbr07:58
Dr_Cokembr is main boot records07:58
avoiderIt wont let me even boot windows at all07:58
hateballavoider: Try ##windows07:58
Dr_Cokeno you need to just boot into the setup cd07:59
Dr_Cokeavoider, actually windows people would know07:59
avoiderthey dont see to know.07:59
Dr_CokeI was talking from my memory of windows 707:59
avoiderI have only usb no cd drive on this laptop07:59
Dr_Cokenot windows 1007:59
avoiderThis is windows 708:00
Dr_Cokeis the bios set to boot usb first08:00
hateballIt's also not an Ubuntu problem08:00
avoideri tried that.08:00
Triffid_Hunteravoider: you need a bootloader on your disk or nothing can boot. if grub is there, you need to either tell grub to boot windows, or put the windows one there. we (probably) can't help you put the windows one there08:01
hiyaWhy does chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf gives error in Ubuntu?08:01
hiyaWhat is cause of it?08:01
hateballhiya: What is it you're looking to acheive?08:01
avoiderhow can i remove it08:01
avoideror w.e08:01
hiyahateball, to write protect resolv.conf08:02
hiyanothing else08:02
avoiderI just want to remove grub08:03
Dr_Cokeavoider, if you can't boot into the windows setup on the usb you're screwed08:03
avoiderso i can boot windows08:03
hateballhiya: Sounds like it's some other problem you're trying to work around08:03
Triffid_Hunteravoider: it doesn't work like that.. you can remove grub by eg dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=448 but then you'll be *even more* screwed when windows still won't start08:03
Ben64avoider: if you want windows, install windows08:03
avoiderit wont install08:04
hiyahateball, I am having DNS issues when I setp OpenVPN with NM in Unity08:04
avoideri just said only thing i can get to boot is this retarded linux os's08:04
Ben64then you're doing it wrong08:04
hateballhiya: a known bug iirc08:04
hiyahateball, how to fix?08:04
Triffid_Hunteravoider: well that's nothing to do with grub.. tell grub to boot windows for you, or go wrestle with your BIOS08:04
hiyaI want to write protect resolv.conf08:04
avoideri dont know how to tell grub to boot windows.08:05
Ben64you don't08:05
Ben64continue getting support in ##windows ... it is not an ubuntu issue08:05
avoiderit obviouslt is08:06
Dr_Cokeavoider, penis into powerpoint should solve it08:06
avoiderbecause after i installed ubuntu08:06
avoideri had this issue08:06
avoideri could install several diff windows os and never have this issue08:06
Ben64you're having trouble booting windows from a usb, thats all your computer, flash drive, and bios. nothing to do with ubuntu at all08:06
avoiderso obviously has to do with the crappy software linux puts on my machine08:06
Triffid_Hunteravoider: no it's not. your computer's BIOS decides which disk to boot from. if it's deciding to boot the wrong one, it's not grub's fault and there's nothing grub can do about it except chain-load the disk you do want to boot from08:07
hateballhiya: trying to find the bug on launchpad. I dont use openvpn myself, but I am guessing your problem is dns leaking?08:07
Triffid_Hunteravoider: if your BIOS picked the right disk, grub would never even get looked at08:07
avoiderSo you guys dont know any way to get this off my computer?08:07
avoiderjust tell me its not because of linux08:07
Dr_Cokeavoider get a new hard drive08:08
Dr_Cokethat will fix it08:08
Ben64avoider: you're already in ##windows, that's where you're going to get your windows issue solved08:08
avoidertoo bad all you devs cant figure it better soultion08:08
avoiderfor ppl08:08
Triffid_Hunteravoider: sure, just erase first sector of the disk. that'll blow away first-stage bootloader, partition table and magic word. now your bios will think the disk is blank and, since it apparently can't boot from USB, your computer will be completely bricked08:08
avoideror make it more freidnly08:08
hateballhiya: here is one bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openvpn/+bug/121111008:08
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1211110 in openvpn (Ubuntu) "network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses" [High,Incomplete]08:08
hateballhiya: as writeprotecting resolv.conf will likely lead to breakage08:09
Triffid_Hunteravoider: so let me be clear: it's easy to remove grub, however I'm pretty sure that's not what you actually want08:09
Dr_Cokehe or she left08:10
Dr_CokeI thought they were trolling08:11
Triffid_Hunteryeah oh well, demanding a solution that won't fix the problem and in fact will make more problems because the actual problem is elsewhere and refusing to listen to anyone kindly trying to explain isn't gonna be effective no matter how they come at it08:11
Dr_Cokeeither that or really couldn't get their computer to boot08:11
Triffid_Hunterthey apparently could get grub running.. *shrug*08:11
hiyahateball, no it does not :(08:12

EriC^^Firefly67: edited version http://paste.ubuntu.com/23602745/09:55
Firefly67thank you Eric^^09:57
EriC^^Firefly67: no problem09:57
Firefly67are you usually around here regularly? I think I will get my laptop next week09:57
EriC^^Firefly67: yeah i am09:58
Firefly67ok, then I will log in here if I have issues09:58
EriC^^ok, cool09:58
Firefly67I am reading your guide, I don't understand it fully, but I will read it several times and maybe I'll get it09:58
Firefly67I have to be connected to the internet during this process? Will it come with windows installed? Will I need a CD/usb to install either/both windows/linux?10:00
Firefly67like, I power on the laptop, and immediately press F10/F12?10:00
EriC^^Firefly67: yeah, you'll need a usb or cd to install linux10:01
Firefly67oh I see, it can't be downloaded from the internet or something?10:01
Firefly67or via another laptop?10:01
EriC^^after you install it, it might boot into windows, if that happens, follow the guide10:01
Firefly67I must get it from someone?10:01
Firefly67oh I see10:02
EriC^^get the iso from http://www.ubuntu.com10:02
Firefly67so these are post-installation instructions? Not instructions as to how to actually partition the drive(s)?10:02
cfhowlett"someone"?  how about downloading from the official source?10:02
EriC^^Firefly67: yes, these are instructions in case after you install ubuntu it keeps booting windows (some uefi implementations are like that, hp and lenovo especially)10:03
Firefly67oh I see10:03
Firefly67I don't even know how to partition it and install both in the first place10:03
EriC^^Firefly67: first get the iso from the ubuntu site, and use linuxliveusbcreator to make a live usb10:04
EriC^^then in windows go to the disk management and right click on the windows volume and click on shrink10:04
EriC^^and choose the space you want to give ubuntu, then boot the ubuntu live usb you made, and let the installer partition for you, choose install alongside windows10:05
Firefly67ok, so will the new laptop come with windows pre-installed?10:05
EriC^^use torrent to get the ubuntu iso, or checksum the iso yourself if you get it from the website via http10:05
EriC^^Firefly67: yeah they usually do10:05
EriC^^some are coming with FreeDOS though10:06
EriC^^no OS basically10:06
Firefly67ok, so my job will be to shrink the windows part to make room for linux10:06
EriC^^it should say in the specs if windows is included10:06
EriC^^Firefly67: yeah10:06
Firefly67ok, I am taking notes from this chat10:09
Firefly67this is all reversible, right? If I mess up I can take it to a professional who can undo whatever I've done wrong?10:09
EriC^^Firefly67: yeah, no worries10:09
EriC^^you should be fine though10:10
Firefly67I've never done it, I am a user and don't know much about administration10:11
Firefly67I just have to shrink the space, then reboot it with the ubuntu usb, and it will know where to install ubuntu?10:12
EriC^^Firefly67: yeah10:12
Firefly67shrinking it marks it as "free space" available to install other OSs?10:13
cfhowlettthere's another option Firefly67 that is less work.  Install virtualbox to your Windows computer.  Install a light *buntu to the virtualbox, i.e. lubuntu/xuubntu.  Your speed will be somewhat reduced but you'll have a working ubuntu system to learn with.  If you get tired if it, just delete it out of windows as normal.10:13
EriC^^cfhowlett: he uses linux already full time10:13
cfhowlettah!  sorry did not know.  thankx EriC^^10:14
Firefly67no I need proper linux, it is my main OS, I only use windows for powerpoint presentations10:14
EriC^^no problem cfhowlett10:14
EriC^^Firefly67: yeah shrinking it removes some space from it and marks it as unallocated space so ubuntu can use it10:15

HarisI tried updateing /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Wired Connection1 and then restarting networking via /etc/init.d/networking restart. but it didn't work10:30
Firefly67EriC^^, does 20% for Windows and 80% for linux sound like a reasonable split to you? My current partition seems to have been 50-50, not sure why it was installed that way as I primarily use linux, so I am wondering if windows applications need more space or something10:30
Ben64Haris: what are you trying to do10:31
Harisif I try to re-set default gw, I'll get disconnected. This VM doesn't have screen on it yet10:31

Ben64oh vm, i'm out10:31

cfhowlettyou might want to ask the vmware channel the question.  In vbox, the host machine does the heavy lifting and the vbox picks up the available input and should auto-configure.  Works like magic in vbox.10:37
Firefly67EriC^^, would you suggest I get Ubuntu 14 or 16?10:38

ubitqtyhi i just upgraded to 16.04 and xrandr doesnt have my resolution that i used before10:47
i_and_iwhich resolution ?10:48

EriC^^and in case it doesn't work out you can revert the whole hdd back10:48
ubitqtyi_and_i, 1440x90010:48
EriC^^Firefly67: it has to be as large as the hdd to get a clone of the whole hdd, including the partition table and everything, so 500gb if the hdd is 500gb10:49

cfhowlettyes you could do exactly that10:55
Firefly67I don't know where I'd get 500 GB of usb/hdd space from otherwise10:56

cfhowlettFirefly67, unetbootin configures the .iso + usb as a bootable medium11:03
EriC^^Firefly67: you can make a recovery usb from windows11:04
i_and_ifirefly you can use any dedicated backup-program that saves the backup to USB11:04
EriC^^Firefly67: usually there's a big partition at the end of the disk on pre-installed windows laptops that's used for recovery, you can make a recovery usb from windows it's usually around 20gb11:04
=== cyphase_eviltwin is now known as cyphase
Firefly67so I should get a 32 GB USB, I checked the one I have and it is only 16 GB11:05
EriC^^Firefly67: there is an issue though as i'm not entirely sure it would still work in case of an altered partition table, i think it usually just extracts an image of the laptop in the original state, in that case you can manually partition using an ubuntu live usb and extract the image yourself11:05
EriC^^( it might work without doing that, i've never tried using the recovery usb on a laptop that had the partition tables modified )11:06
Firefly67if I really need recovery and such I will need help from a professional, don't think I can do it myself11:06
EriC^^Firefly67: you can do it, make the recovery usb from windows and you can do it11:07
i_and_iit's simple .. just a long copy-paste11:07

atralheavenHi, How can I get ride of this icon? "http://i.imgur.com/RIOdr2D.png" I did update my system, it didn't fix it11:41
EriC^^atralheaven: try sudo apt-get -f install; sudo dpkg --configure -a11:42
SuMJI just installed sensors-applet on my freshly installed Ubuntu 16.04 but I can't See the applet11:42
Kingsywell, I have been experiencing random crashes on my laptop for the past couple of weeks (since I installed ubuntu) the machine is totally unresponsive after crash, not available via ping or ssh. I have tried a persistent journal and with journalctl -p err -n still doesnt show much. I can see a stack trace in dmesg --> http://hastebin.com/iqaraseluq.md <-- which seems to correspond to this bug --> https://bu11:43
Kingsygs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94171 <-- which hints on upgrading the kernel to 4.5.0 or newer may fix the issue.11:43
atralheavenEriC^^: Do I need a reboot after that?11:43
KingsyEriC^^: if you were doing this, would you always go latest? so in this case v4.9-rc8/11:43
EriC^^atralheaven: worth a shot11:43
atralheavenEriC^^: ok, I will let you know if its fixed, thanks!11:44
EriC^^atralheaven: what does it say when you click on the restricted logo?11:44
Ben64Kingsy: since you're on 16.04, you could simply install linux-generic-hwe-16.0411:44
Kingsyumm what is that?11:44
Ben64Kingsy: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/RollingLTSEnablementStack11:44
Ben64actually, since 16.10 is still newish, you would need linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge11:45
SuMJAlso how do I make sure that everything driver is working correctly?11:45
atralheavenEriC^^: its gone! thanks! May I ask what does "dpkg --configure -a" do?11:45
KingsyBen64: literally just sudo apt-get install linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge <-- and I am done with a new kernel??/11:46
Ben64Kingsy: should be yes11:46
atralheavenEriC^^: noooo its back now!11:46
Ben64Kingsy: welcome to the exciting world of LTS11:46

atralheavenEriC^^: non of the menu items of it work, btw11:47

wafflejockSuMJ, ah see you said Ubuntu 16.04, assume using Unity?11:55
atralheavenEriC^^: It opened it, I thought maybe I had a broken repo added, but everything was fine. so what can I do with this icon?11:55

EriC^^atralheaven: that looks ok12:01
Buntunewbiewaffejock I have tried that, but it still leaves 2 deb files in /var/cache/apt/archives and a png behind.12:01
blackflowlooks to me that if I bridge enp3s0 (physical nic) with lxdbr0 I can achieve the public ipv6 part, but then the ipv4 (say range) would also be available to WAN on that bridge...12:01

Firefly67yes, maybe I could think about that if keeping windows becomes too difficult. My colleague couldn't manage to install both windows and linux, I think the system administrator said it was because he had Windows 1017:47
ikoniarangemonger: typo17:47
LolaCaramiawhen it is still running17:47
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, there used to be a easy way to install Ubuntu from inside Windows.  using an instaler,  resulting ina dual boot, but that becae unsupported  for a few reasons.   the old standard way to dual boot still is fine though17:48
i_and_idownlaod the USB installer17:48
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, to tr ?17:48
LolaCaramiasorry what is tr?17:48
kazaok ty Quetzalcoatl17:48
ahi2install ubuntu by itself and then use windows in a VM if needed17:48
MathisenLolaCaramia, you are not talking about the new win10 feature ? bash in windows "a.k.a ubuntu in windows"17:48
SebthreeBQM10HDsounds like a virtual  machine you mean?17:48
LolaCaramiai have windows 1017:49
engpyi_and_i, rskumar, I do search my app name e.g hexchat what I get ton of files and dirs... so which one is basically my executable app or launcher?17:49
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, you can try inside Windows in a virtual machine17:49
rangemongerVMs for lyfe yo :P17:49
MathisenLolaCaramia, and are you talking about that feature or do realt want full ubuntu17:49
i_and_iit is listed under "Applications"17:49
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia,  but to use for real it would be better to dual boot17:49
ahi2vmware is better than virtualbox17:49
SebthreeBQM10HDahi2, virtualbox is better than vmware :D17:50
rskumarengpy: under application group with its icon17:50
ahi2virtualbox has too many issues17:50
rangemongerahi2: overall, yes, but they each do some things that are mutually exclusive17:50
engpyAlright I have it know yes sorry it puts under applications17:50
i_and_iHexChat icon should be in the taskbar after install17:50
LolaCaramiai ask as i did it before like five years ago i installed it from windows and it perfectly worked alone with windows17:50
engpyalright so you search and click from there17:50
engpysounds reasonable :)17:51
i_and_iengpy you can use that same method to find all your programs17:51
rangemongerLolaCaramia: that was a feature called wubi, they stopped offering that17:51
rskumarengpy: drag it to sidebar if you want to keep it there17:51

i_and_ilemme see17:51
MathisenLolaCaramia, i dont think wubi is used anymore.. so diffrent these days17:51
i_and_iMibixFox.. no idea17:52
rangemongerits a shame, wubi was pretty decent17:52
engpycan I tell ubuntu to allow me run any app from terminal without finding it or being in the qapps dir?17:52
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, yeah  five years ago or so there was wubi, but that no longer is supported17:52
rskumarMibixFox: you want to clean everything and install  ubuntu?17:52
MibixFoxclean everything?17:52
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, it also won't work with versions of  widows since like windows 8 I think17:52
MibixFoxi just came from a windows install and i have ubuntu installed17:53
i_and_i5.6 Terabytes nice17:53
MibixFoxand now ubuntu isnt detected 3 of my disks17:53
MibixFoxya well i probably just lost 18tb17:53
LolaCaramiaOh I see so only way is to install it from dvd or flash so i never did it in such way how can i install it without damage windows17:53
rangemongerLolaCaramia: either that or use a vm17:53
i_and_iLola .. windows is already damaged17:54
ducasseMibixFox: were they set up in a raid or something?17:54
Mathiseni_and_i, no it is not.. no need to overdo it17:54
rangemongeri_and_i: i second that17:54
i_and_ii had to say it17:54
MibixFoxducasse those two were in software raid 1 before but i broke the mirror before i switched to ubuntu17:54
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, you could dual boot the proper way with partitions, but can also be a bit tricky with a Windows 10 computer17:54
ducasseMibixFox: and do you need the data on them?17:55
rangemongeri will never do raid, too many horror stories17:55
MathisenLolaCaramia, what do you need ubuntu for ? what are you gonna use it for17:55
i_and_ijust backup your old system17:55
MibixFoxducasse do you know how i can recover that partition?17:56
i_and_ithen install17:56

SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, what you want to do?17:57
ducasseMibixFox: if you configured them from windows, you need to rescue them from windows17:57
LolaCaramiaok so few weeks ago I have finished trainings of QA testing and I decided to remember how to work with linux as I didn't do it for many years17:57
MathisenLolaCaramia, then a VM will be good enough and will it is easy to get going.. no need to hasle with partitions and boot problems..17:57
rangemongerVM is the best for experimenting17:58
rangemongerbecause of save states17:58
rangemongermuch less hasle17:58
rangemongerdef safer17:59
LolaCaramiacould you please explain me how can I do that with VM?17:59
Mathisenyeah if you know what you are doing sure dual boot is great but like they said can be some issues with a uefi machine and win1017:59
MathisenLolaCaramia, just download virtualbox18:00
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, well Microsoft insisted on hardware manfactures to have a eature called UEI  on all newer computers since like Windows 8, which can make the world of dual booting right fun (sarcasm),  got to od certain things that didn't have to do before,  and it can vary a bit on computer, and get annoying18:00
MibixFoxwelp back to windows18:00
Southern_Gentlemwell actusally it was intel18:00
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, feature called UEFI correcting that.18:00
rangemongerblame intel for uefi, blame ms for secureboot18:01
rangemonger64bit uefi is supported well now with big distros18:01
rskumarbut both works without any hassle on windows ... lol18:01
rangemonger32bit is still a headache though18:01
Mathiseni still just do legacy installs18:02
rangemongerMathisen: im guessing you have a machine with bios emulation?18:02
Mathisenbios emulation ?18:03
rskumaruefi emulation18:03
Mathiseni have MB with UEFI suport18:03
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, so on a newer machine, and if not that into this stuff18:03
rangemongersome UEFIs have bios emulation18:03
Mathisenokej i have no clue what the major diffrence is18:03
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, could be eaiser to try the virtual machine again first.  get comfortalbe enough then try a dual boot for real later, espeically if you were a wubi user years ago18:03
rangemongeruefi doesnt need a bootloader or weird formats for a usb stick to boot18:04
rangemongerjust copy the files to the drive and it boots, as long as theres a working efi folder18:04
Mathiseni ment the emulation part18:04
LolaCaramia<SebthreeBQM10HD>but I also don't know how to do that with VM18:04
rangemongerbios emulation lets you boot non efi stuff18:04
rskumarrangemonger: you r correct.. some mbs have uefi with bios emulation18:05
rangemongerrskumar: shame laptops never do18:05
Mathisenwell i dont know then.. i just know i can switch from UEFI to legacy/CSM18:05
_liam_ is there a standard/most popular program when it comes to desktop widgets?18:05
rangemongeroh wait, ive come across one laptop that did18:05
_liam_I know there is screenlets, but anythig more popular?18:06
rskumarrangemonger: iirc, i had hp probook with this...18:06
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, UEFI can be a pain, so best to save that for a bit later I am thinking18:06
rangemongerLolaCaramia: did you install virtual box?18:06
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, get comortalbe with Ubuntu in Virtualbox first18:06
ZeranoeIs there a guide available that goes through how to set up a Ubuntu LAMP server with using best practices? As in, virtual servers, permissions, etc18:06
rangemongerthe one that had it was acer, atleast the one ive seen18:07
rskumarZeranoe: best practices for production?18:07
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, but ok you haven't done a vm before, a virtual machine18:07
krambiorixhow can i check if all tags in file A are also in file B?18:07
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, that's usaully quite easy to do with a program called Virtualbox18:07
Zeranoerskumar: Yes18:07
rangemongerwhat i like about gigabytes uefi is that you can boot things on a per os basis18:08
rskumarZeranoe: avoid VMs if you care performance.. look into docker container18:08
nuentoterok so curious, the pc im on now has a broken kernel and os, im using live disk atm. Is there anyway to still run like an sql command so i can get my backups?18:08
rangemongerone os can boot in uefi mode, and another in legacy bios mode18:08
LolaCaramiaпкуфе ерфтл нщг18:08
Zeranoerskumar: Sorry, I meant virtual hosts18:08
Zeranoerskumar: The apache HTTP configuration18:08
Mathisenrangemonger, even if same hd ? jusr diffrent partitions ?18:08
LolaCaramiagreat thank you I will find that soft and install it if there any extra questions I'll be back^)18:09
rangemongerMathisen: i cant remember if it lets you on the same hdd but probably not since uefi booting requires gpt18:09
rskumarZeranoe: oh.. that has nothing to do with ubuntu.. you can find some good refs on digitalocean.. their docs are good18:09
Zeranoerskumar: Thank you18:09
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, hld on a sec18:09

rangemongerducasse: whats false?18:10
rskumarZeranoe: like this - https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-apache-virtual-hosts-on-ubuntu-14-04-lts18:10
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, go to http://virtualbox.org downlad it for WIndows then18:10
ducasserangemonger: uefi does not require gpt (except for windows)18:10
Zeranoerskumar: What do you think of this? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP18:10
rangemongerducasse: yeah, i suppose youre right, since it just needs an uefi dir18:11
clarkkon ubuntu 16.04, when the mail indicator icon goes blue, I click on it and click thunderbird from the list that appears, but thunderbird does not come to the foreground. This worked on 12.04. Is there any way to resolve the issue?18:11
ducasserangemonger: it's a bit complex, since many don't follow the uefi specs to the letter.18:11
rangemongerLolaCaramia: get the extensionpack too18:11
rangemongerducasse: hopefully that will clear up with time18:12
LolaCaramiaI don't see that18:12
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, donload the UBuntu ISO desktop. I get it from  htttp://releases.ubuntu.com ubuntu desktop 64bit amd6418:12

rskumarwhat difference do Xorg.1.log and Xorg.0.log have?18:14
Zeranoerskumar: Last question: as a point of organization, is it a good idea to create a user for each domain, and run their respective httpd sessions with suPHP?18:14
apiohello mates18:14

nuentoterok so curious, the pc im on now has a broken kernel and os, im using live disk atm. Is there anyway to still run like an sql command so i can get my backups?18:15
LolaCaramiaok guys I have download it everithing and ubuntu desktop too18:15
rangemongernuentoter: im guessing yes but thats out of my league so i dont know for sure18:16
rangemongerLolaCaramia: install vbox now, then18:16
ducassenuentoter: can't you just copy out the db files?18:16
SebthreeBQM10HDLolaCaramia, you will have to re boot after installing virutalbox probably18:17
nuentoterthat will probably be what happens but I would much prefer otherwise because I cannot directly reimplement a whole db back into it cleanly18:17
rskumarZeranoe: if you want to go insane on security, make users per VH..18:17
rskumarZeranoe: i usually dont use apache, but docker+nginx.. :)18:18
LolaCaramiastarted installation18:18
rangemongeri have to mess with docker, i keep hearing things18:20
ducassenoah2: copy the db files elsewhere on the disk, install a db server on the live session, point the db server at the db copy. might work.18:20
ducassenuentoter: or try in a chroot18:21
apiohey ppl, has anyone fixed the automatic "reply with template" filter in tb?18:21

itchycopsHi.  :)  I've got a question about writing an init.d script to start a process.  Should I just ask, or is there a specific channel for help requests?20:08
nicomachusfind kernel version with uname -r, find ubuntu version with lsb_release -a20:08
CuznerOerHeks is the man20:08
nicomachus!ask | itchycops20:08
ubottuitchycops: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience20:08
itchycopsAh.  Thx.20:09
Cuzneritchycops: is it 16.04+?  you probably want to use systemd tools20:09
Lorne2016nicomachus how do I find the kernel?  (assuming I'm logging in from livecd)20:09
CuznerLorne2016: uname -a20:09
nicomachusLorne2016: from a terminal, type < uname -r >20:09
Cuzneror -r20:10
nicomachusyou can use -a but it gives a lot of unnecessary info20:10
Cuznerit's just habitual20:10
itchycopsI'm writing an init.d script to start a program that someone else wrote.  It's not written to be a daemon, but I'd like it launched at boot time.  The problem is, the process starts, but doesn't seem to 'let go' of the init script.20:10
itchycopsCuzner:  I'm on 16.10, but I'm just using what's already there.  There are tons of startup scripts in /etc/init.d/.20:11
Cuzneritchycops: yeah, it's for legacy support20:11
sadmehi, my ubuntu 16.04 system takes a stupidly long amount of time to boot up - how can i find what the problem is? systemd-analyze tells me that 3 minutes (!!!) was spent in 'userspace' but doesn't offer any insight on how to fix it - can anyone point me in the right direction?20:11
nicomachusitchycops: valuable reading: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SystemdForUpstartUsers20:11
itchycopsWell, having already written 99% of it, I'd prefer to stick with it, although I'll consider using systemd next time.20:11
Bashing-omLorne2016: Booting up a liveUSB will not directly give you what kernel is in the install . How much time do you want to expend on " learning to fish " ?20:12
Lorne2016Bashing-om  lol...none.  I just wanna repair this beast and get on my way!20:12
sadme guess i'll just reformat20:12
ioriasadme, systemd-analyze blame20:12
Cuznerhaha nicomachus20:12
Cuzneri was about to link that to him20:13
nicomachusgreat minds google alike20:13
sadmeioria: there's nothing there - 4 seconds for apt, 1 second for some lvm2 thing - but that's all. nothing that could account for the >3 minute boot time20:13
Lorne2016Bashin-om 4.8.0-22-generic  (but that could be the version of the stick!  and not what's supposedto be on my harddrive)20:13
itchycopsAnyway, is there a way I can indicate inside my init script that I'd like to put the program into the background?  I've tried appending an ampersand to the options, but that didn't work.20:13
Cuzneritchycops: you can probably still use much of what you've written, we're just suggesting you packge it up for systemd instead of using the legacy stuff... Might as well do it the right way the first time, right?20:14
Bashing-omLorne2016: K :).. can you boot to the GUI - degraded is acceptable - with the nomodeset boot parameter ? . better yet to a terminal from the log in screen (crl+alr+F1) . and we see about the driver and what we need to install .20:14
Cuznerthe link nicomachus sent you shows you how20:14
ioriasadme, let's press esc and follow the boot process in text mode ...20:14
Lorne2016Bashing-om  YES!   (can you give me 15 mins tho' - gotta get the kids from school... be right back)20:15
itchycopsI'm reading that, but I just spent a day figuring out how to write this, so I hope you can understand "Start over again with this new thing" isn't an optimal answer.20:15
Bashing-omLorne2016: Always here is at your pace :)20:15
nicomachusitchycops: but you spent a day writing it for a deprecated system.20:15
nicomachusthere shouldn't be too much to change20:15
Cuzneryeah, most of it can probably be ported over with minimal effort20:16
itchycopsI don't have a problem reading 10 pages, but I have a minor complaint about something that works and was shipped by default with the system.20:16
sadmeioria: hiw can i do that? lressing escape while booting has no effect, all i see is the boot animation20:17
nicomachusitchycops: is it working now?20:17
itchycopsdeprecated means "will not supported in the future" — I get that.  And I'd be delighted to write anything new with it, but at this precise moment in time, I have a minor inconvenience, and throwing away another entire day to read about how to do it the right way, is, while correct, not a great solution.20:17
itchycopsYes, it works with the minor complaint that when I start it from the command line, it hangs and doesn't return.  I can CTRL-C out of it, and get back to the command line, and the process continues to run in the background, but I'd like to fix that.20:18
Cuznerif you don't like learning new ways of doing things, systems administration's probably not for you.  but, for the sake of solving your problem, have you tried just forking a subshell with '&' on the end of whatever service you're trying to start?20:19
nicomachusitchycops: there's an awesome support community at #systemd but that would require changing it over to the systemd way of doing things.20:19
itchycopsI don't have a problem learning new ways.  But I've asked a simple question, but nobody's even attempted to help answer the question that I asked, the response has been "start over".20:20
=== PostreAway- is now known as Postrecito
nicomachusno, it's been "do it right"20:20
itchycopsThere are two dozen processes being started this way, out of the box.20:21
itchycopsIf there's no support for it, it should be removed from the distribution entirely.20:21
Cuzneryou realize you just responded to my comment where i did give you a suggestion and you seem to have ignored it? :P20:21
Cuznerbut i'm still with nicomachus on this one, do it right the first time.20:21
Cuznerbut if you do want to keep doing it wrong, try forking it with &20:22
itchycopsCuzner:  I already explained that I've tried that, and you seem to have ignored it.  :P20:22
Cuznerah, no, i guess i just missed it, lots of scroll in this channel :D20:22
itchycops>> Anyway, is there a way I can indicate inside my init script that I'd like to put the program into the background?  I've tried appending an ampersand to the options, but that didn't work.20:22
itchycopsCuzner:  Yes.  ;)20:22
nicomachushave you tried && exit?20:23
nicomachusat the end?20:23
itchycopsI've got a CMD='/path/to/command' and OPT=' -list -of -options &' in the script, but it didn't change the behavior.20:23
guest1110101are you still here dankux20:23
ioriasadme, any progress ?20:23
itchycopsnicomachus:  If the program doesn't exit/go into the background, I'm not sure that the 'exit' command would ever run.20:24
dankux297Someone help me please20:25
itchycopsIn much the same way bash && exit wouldn't exit until bash stopped running.20:25
Cuznerhave you tried 'bash -c <commands & options> && exit'?20:25

* Cuzner shrugs20:27
Cuznerout of ideas, do it the correct way :)20:27
sadmeioria: i had to reboot into a different os to deal with something, i will try in a second. i think i can use this technique to boot in text mode http://askubuntu.com/questions/33416/how-do-i-disable-the-boot-splash-screen-and-only-show-kernel-and-boot-text-inst20:27
ioriasadme,  a bit old, you're using systemd20:28
itchycopsCuzner:  I suspect the problem will be the same, since the program isn't designed to be a daemon.  I suppose I'll leave it as is for now, since it's functional, but I will read up on systemd for the next time.20:28
evilytwistedrangemonger,  to start off i have win10, im trying to use unetbootin to install linux without the use of cd or usb20:28

Bashing-omLorne2016: K. we want to boot up the target machine . check/install a driver . Need that you boot up that install to either the recovery consile or preferrably a console interface .20:35

evilytwistedCuzner,  why not? linux is a fully well desktop replacement20:35
evilytwistedand it can game.20:35
Cuzneri would agree if you're a power use using i3wm or something20:35
wedgiemaslen1: or    apt-cache depends <package>20:35
evilytwistednah, get cinnamon.20:35
evilytwistedcinnamon or kde is well eyecandy licisous20:35
Cuznerbut if you're going to install linux to run gnome, you may as well stick with win10 and run it in a hyper-v vm20:35
BadCodSmellhmm don't worry it's almost certainly that20:36
nicomachusnothing wrong with good ol' Unity desktop, but this is all getting off-topic20:36
Lorne2016Bashing-om OK - so you want me to attempt to boot to a terminal without the stick (?)... I have been successful at that once going thru the machines own grub...but sometimes the grub menu doesn't show!!20:36
evilytwistednah gnome is like mac......  if i would install anything. t would be linux mint20:36
evilytwistedty rangemonger20:36
evilytwistedfor the advice20:36
Cuznerevilytwisted: still, you sound like a guy who wants to learn more linux, you can do that without slowing down your productivity by getting used to a new desktop OS...20:37
Cuznerbut to each his/her own.20:37
BadCodSmellthere's no such thing as a desktop OS20:37
BadCodSmellIt's made of wood20:37
Bashing-omLorne2016: If there is bit ubuntu installed . then grub "should" not show by default . Now depending on if this machine is newer (uefi) one can get the grub menu -> soon as the bios screen clears press and hold a shift key .20:37
evilytwistedCuzner,  yeah of course. But linux has /is awesome.20:38
Cuznerit's the correct tool for the job the majority of the time20:38

Lorne2016Bashing-om  yeah - I'm holding the shift key like my life depended on it...and it doesn't show!  I have gotten it to show before...but unsure how to repeat that feat20:39

Lorne2016Bashing-om and the system is newer and I believe UEFI20:39
Bashing-omLorne2016: :et us then sday this is a EFI machine .. then it is the escape key that grub looks for . soon as the bios screen clears spam that escape key .20:40
Cuznernicomachus: agreed, sorry to get off topic, i'll shaddap :)20:40
Bashing-omLorne2016: ^ there is only a 3 second window of opportunity and grub moves on .20:41
rangemongerif its uefi, just make a fat32 partition and copy the cd contents to it20:41
Lorne2016Bashing-om  I got grub!!20:42
rangemongeras long as its a 64bit ubuntu and your uefi is 64 bit, it should give you a boot option20:42
Lorne2016Bashing-om - so i want advanced options...then 'c' for command line?20:42

ekkisgreetings everyone.  I've just upgraded and now the OS won't load.  I get a kernel panic "not syncing - Attempted to kill init!"21:20
ekkisthe OS is run under VMWare on a MacBook Pro and I think the installation crashed because the laptop froze21:21
ekkiswhat can I do now?21:21
Jordan_Uguest1110101: I don't understand. Are you having a problem booting from the LiveCD? (The same CD you just installed from)21:21

Lorne2016Bashing-om   It occurs to me - I haven't tried adding nomodeset to a regular startup... can you pls help me try that?21:23

fubmikeymop, any other idea?21:25
nicomachusfub: one sec, trying to remember the command to open the sound settings panel from terminal21:25
guest1110101ekkis: hopefully you have a backup of your files in the vm.. you can easily try to wipe and reinstall.. it's not recommended to upgrade even if it's an option21:25
ekkisguest1110101: it's not recommended to upgrade?? but the system recommended it.  I just clicked ok21:26
guest1110101ekkis: try to install the latest version normally instead of using an upgrade. I promise you that this will save you a lot of headaches21:26
nicomachusfub: try unity-control-center21:26
nicomachushonestly not sure if that works in i3 or not21:26
guest1110101ekkis: I know.. this ubuntu is one headache after another..21:26

guest1110101yeah.. that..21:26
fubnicomachus, I have to install the whole gnome stuff then :/21:27

nicomachusfub: ok, hold on.21:27

Selleriewhats up21:28
howarthwhich shows you all the installed packages that don't exist in the current repos21:28
xanguafub: how are you controlling pulseaudio?21:28
guest1110101I can't do that lol, but I can take a picture with multiple phone.21:28
Selleriecan anyone tell me how to update wifi driver without messing everything up?21:28
SebthreeBQM10HDSellerie, nm u21:28
howarthdoes apt-get have an equivalent?21:28
mikeymopguest1110101: i usually wipe the .files in my /home when reinstlaling on top21:28
Bashing-omLorne2016: Sure . But that failure on the initiate system bothers me a bunch .. And I have complete confidence in Jordan_U . I do suggest you do as he has advised at this time and show him that boot-info script output.21:28
nicomachusfub: pacmd list-sinks21:28
guest1110101my.. wow..21:28
guest1110101my phone21:28
nicomachusthen find your bluetooth speakers name21:28
xanguahowarth: equivalent to what?21:28
fubxangua, honestly, I do not know :/ I'm setting volume up/down via pactl set-sink-volume 1 +10%21:28
=== y0sh_ is now known as y0sh
Lorne2016Jordan_U  hey did you ask for some output thingy?  What did you want?  (sorry, I guess I missed it)21:29
nicomachusfub: you can change the default output with pacmd set-default-sink "SINKNAME"21:29
wafflejockfub, can also try pavucontrol nice graphical interface for adjusting what input/outputs are used by pulseaudio21:29
Jordan_Uhowarth: aptitude search ~o21:29
xanguafub: you can install pavucontrol and should be able to select your headphones as output21:29
nicomachusfub: yea, wafflejock has a good suggestion with pavucontrol21:29
fubthis looks nice, it's already installed. however the headset is not in there21:30
EriC^^when it says Ultra XVID Codex Pack.exe in a torrent and something.avi, does it mean i'll be able to watch it using vlc on ubuntu?21:30
ekkisguest1110101: f*ck.  I explicitly removed the VM images from my backup21:30
ekkisso now I can't restore21:30
Lorne2016Bashing-om  Do you mean the error I showed you already, or did he ask for some new output?21:30
xanguafub: how about in the last tab?21:30
SebthreeBQM10HDEriC^^, no21:30
EriC^^SebthreeBQM10HD: ah really?21:31
howarththanks, so I assume all the new features are going into aptitude rather than apt-get21:31
EriC^^SebthreeBQM10HD: any solution?21:31
Jordan_ULorne2016: No. I asked a different user for boot info script output. Did recovery mode get you anywhere?21:31
SebthreeBQM10HDEriC^^, exe files don't usally work in ubuntu there is a way, but uh21:31
howarthin that case, it is surprising that the Live 16.10 doesn't install it21:31
nicomachusEriC^^: should be able to watch .avi in VLC21:31
SebthreeBQM10HDEriC^^, you want normal codecs it seems21:31
EriC^^SebthreeBQM10HD: yeah i know, i mean vlc can't play without having that codec stuff installed?21:31
fubxangua, yeah, it's in there21:31
nicomachuswithout installing codecs21:31
EriC^^the torrent has a file called "Ultra XVid Codec Pack.exe"21:32
howarthFYI, I am interested because I finally gave up on getting the current Ubuntu installers to install on a MacBook Pro 200621:32
Lorne2016Jordan_U no - recovery mode didn't help... I need to take kid#1 to ballet class.. I'll be back in 30 mins... then (if you're here) you can walk me thru that21:32
howarthhowever I found that the Debian multiarch ones worked fine21:32
nicomachusEriC^^: AFAIK that's usually for Windows users that need the codec to play it.21:32
SebthreeBQM10HDEriC^^, apparanly according to nicomachus should work without, but won't hurt running this anyway:  sudo apt-get installl ubuntu-restricted-codecs21:32
nicomachusEriC^^: also, pirating is bad, mmmkay :D21:32
fubxangua, under "output devices" I can see "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo", with two options: Line Out (plugged in) and Headphones (unplugged)21:32
OerHeksEriC^^, that codec stuff delivered with a torrent is fake, malware maybe lolz21:32
EriC^^ok, i'll download it and report back if it doesn't work21:32
xanguafub: are you sure they are detected as headphones in Bluetooth?21:32
howarthso I am swapping out the /etc/apt and doing a dist-upgrade followed by removal of all packages not in ubuntu21:32
EriC^^OerHeks: lol yeah i bet21:32
fubxangua, yeah blueman tells me this.21:33
SebthreeBQM10HDEriC^^, don't use some Windowsey torent as well21:33
fubxangua, it's also in the last tab under "configuration"21:33
Jordan_UEriC^^: That's most likely a Windows trojan combined with an unplayable video (to trick you into installing the Windows trojan to be able to play it).21:33
EriC^^SebthreeBQM10HD: alright thanks21:33
SebthreeBQM10HDEriC^^, oh and the Wndows VLC probably works in Wine, but the Linux one can do what you want21:33

fuddieHello! I need some helP. When i Press my lowercase "P" key it doesnt do anything. I belive that i have somehow created a keyboard shortcut that is being triggered by my lowercase "P", because they key works just find on other user accounts. I am need to know how i can find and get rid of this keybinding.21:36
sol0my google-chrome icon in system tray sometimes becomes this weird icon. I don't know what's causing it. Any ideas? -> http://imgur.com/a/6AQfc21:36
sol0fuddie: did you try looking in keyboard settings?21:37
fubxangua, found the problem, I had to change to A2DP in blueman21:37
fubis it possible to set all output streams to a specific sink?21:38
fubbecause I ahve to do this in pavucontrol for each app by its own now21:38
fuddiesol0: Yes, i did. but i cannot find it in the binding in keyboard settings. If i try to hijack the binding so i can delete it, gnome wont let me do that because it would make normal tyPing imPossible21:38
fubalso the system volume is not the volume for the headset21:38
nicomachusfub: you can change the default output with pacmd set-default-sink "SINKNAME"21:39
nicomachusand you'll have a different volume setting for different outputs21:39
=== kingplusplus_ is now known as kingplusplus
EriC^^fuddie: try xmodmap -pke21:39
fubnicomachus, so no way to have one volume setting for all?21:39
nicomachusfub: no. that's generally a bad idea anyway... don't wanna blow my ears out by having my headphones be full volume when I plug them in.21:40
fubnicomachus, thats right, but then I cant use keyboard controls to change volume on the headset21:40
sol0fuddie: why don't you create new keybinding with 'p' and then delete it? If gnome settings doesn't allow you to bind p, try dconf-editor.21:40
nicomachusyou can once it's the default output21:40
nicomachusfub ^21:40
fuboh, okay21:40
fuddieEriC^^: xmodmaP will tell me the keycodes, how do i find out the keycode for 'P'?21:40
fubnicomachus, how?21:40
nicomachusnot even default, actually. keyboard media keys should always control the ACTIVE output sink.21:41
fubI'm currently changing sound with bindsym XF86AudioRaiseVolume exec --no-startup-id pactl set-sink-volume 1 +10% #increase sound volume21:41
EriC^^fuddie: it's 33 , xev helps with that21:41
fubso I guess this only changes sound volume for the first sink21:41
fuddie> keycode  33 = p P p P21:41
EriC^^fuddie: looks good21:41
EriC^^what happens in xev when you press p21:42
nicomachusfub: yea, you'll have to find your sink number for the other sinks to do it that way. or change your keybind to adjust both/all21:42
fuddiewell it dosnt work xD21:42
nicomachusfub: pacmd list-sinks21:42
howarthsweet, I just notice that the Ubuntu sources.list is aready configured as mult-arch21:42
Jordan_Uguest1110101: Were you able to take that picture and upload it anywhere?21:42
nicomachusthen find your bluetooth speakers name21:42
fubnicomachus, 1 is my cable, 2 is my headset21:42
fub(index number 1 and 2)21:42
nicomachusfub: so make your script cover both 1 and 221:42
fiveflowerzzHi! What is the default desktop that came with 14.04?21:43
nicomachusfiveflowerzz: unity21:43
fiveflowerzzIt didn't require login, it autoatmically started dekstop21:43
nicomachusit did require login. unless you disabled that.21:44
fiveflowerzzI probably disabled that21:44
Jordan_Ufiveflowerzz: You can configure automatic login with pretty much any DE, and none has automatic login by default (in any release of Ubuntu).21:44
nicomachusand the "login screen" (lightdm in Ubuntu) doesn't have anything to do with the DE anyway.21:45
nicomachusI use lightdm with Unity, i3, and MATE21:45
fuddieEriC^^: here is xev event when i use "P' https://paste.ubuntu.com/23605272/21:45
SebthreeBQM10HDI prefer LXDM :)21:45
fiveflowerzzWhat is the link between LightDM / unity ?21:46
engpyBtw I have problem with Ubuntu wifi connection. When it sleeps/hibernate I lose wifi Internet connection and its list I have to relog in orter to get my wifi list back. How can I fix it?21:46
EriC^^fuddie: that doesn't seem like what it's supposed to do21:46
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, there should always be a log in screen really a display manage21:46
fuddieEriC^^: what is wrong with it then?21:46
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, Light DM is default for that, and unit default as interface21:46
EriC^^fuddie: this is mine http://paste.ubuntu.com/23605283/21:47
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, other than that not much of a link reallly, except for how Canonical created them both21:47
fiveflowerzzSebthreeBQM10HD: sorry, i didn't get it, is Unity a layer on top of LightDM or something different?21:47
nicomachusfiveflowerzz: your display manager (lightdm) managers which desktop environment (Unity, i3, awesome, MATE, etc) you are launching21:47
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, Unity is realy an alternative shell on top o GNOME  3 instead of there one21:47
ubottuUnity is the default UI since Ubuntu 11.04.  Unity is a shell for GNOME. see http://unity.ubuntu.com. For a GNOME 2-like experience, see !notunity21:47
fiveflowerzzso it's two different layers?21:47
EriC^^fuddie: do the other keys say like mine does?21:47
fiveflowerzzoh i'm lost.... Gnome Unity LightDM ? Which one is on top of which one?21:48
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, a log in screen can be used to log into other interfaces as well such as GNOME, KDE, etc, but by defaut you only got Unity in 14.0421:48
nicomachusUnity is on top of LightDM. Gnome is an alternative to Unity. Unity is kind of a fork of Gnome.21:48
EriC^^fuddie: make a new user account i'd say21:48
fuddieEriC^^: a new user works correctly21:48
EriC^^fuddie: or search your home dir for anything related to keycode 33 maybe21:49
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, Unity is used instead of the default GNOME 3 interface in 14.04 etc21:49
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, in the background it's GNOME 3 or mostly21:49
EriC^^fuddie: copy your stuff to the new user, it's easier21:49
fuddieyeah i guess that would work as a last resort21:49
EriC^^move your stuff, delete the account, recreate it then move the stuff back21:49
fiveflowerzzSo the lower layer is LightDM, then on top of that you can put Gnome or Unity, is that correct?21:50
ubottuGNOME was the default desktop environment on Ubuntu up to 10.10. To install the GNOME Shell, type [ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell ] in a !terminal. For the GNOME-based !flavor of Ubuntu, see !ubuntu-gnome21:50
ubottuKDE (http://kde.org) is an open community that creates and maintains software including the Plasma desktop.  To install from Ubuntu: « sudo apt-get install  kubuntu-desktop », or see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingKDE . See  http://kubuntu.org for more information.21:50
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, the two main ones are GNOME and KDE21:50
EriC^^i've found it to be a pain in the butt when user configs go south, especially with compiz stuff21:50
EriC^^i just recreate the account when it happens21:50
CuznerWAT?! no windowmaker? :P21:50
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, no LightDM is just one of the  many log in screens21:51
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, to log into an interface  you usually need a log in sceen such as lightdm21:53
fuddiei got it EriC^^ & etc, i just have to disable gnome-media-keys21:54
SebthreeBQM10HDfiveflowerzz, an interace would be Unity,  or GNOME Shell, or Plasma what kde uses, or could be many more even21:54
EriC^^fuddie: cool21:54

SebthreeBQM10HDewerton, for now indeed no difference since both are run by xorg22:15
rangemongernicomachus: well its out but its beta22:15
SebthreeBQM10HDewerton, in Ubuntu22:15
rangemongerewerton: turn compsitting off on whichever one you use for best performance on games22:15
ewertonhaha, thanks :)22:16
rangemongernicomachus: mir doesnt run on vbox yet, does it?22:16
Jordan_ULorne2016: Were you using Nvidia's proprietary drivers before this problem started?22:16
nicomachusrangemonger: no it doesn't. I'm running it on my laptop that's sitting right next to me.22:16
ewertonTurn compsitting off on whichever one, will be the same result?22:16
* SebthreeBQM10HD is living in the like future Ubuntu preview aleady with Unity 8 and Mir, since running the tablet :) one of the tablets, plus got two ubuntu phones ( one intentianlly not up to date enough by a long way though )22:16
_Sym_SebthreeBQM10HD, caja22:16
* SebthreeBQM10HD has OTA 14 to install on two of the three devices, but tommorow or something22:17
Lorne2016Jordan_U yes.22:17
Bashing-omLorne2016: Jordan_U :: what results when in grub you choose "advanced" and then select the latest 'recovery' kernel; return key to execute ?22:17
rangemongerewerton: id imagine so, baring anything running in the background that would use up a lot of resources22:17
engpyCan anyone tell me why is there too many different Linux releases? E.g before I installed Ubuntu I wanted to try Mint not sure why I chose Ubuntu :) It is slowe than win10 on same computer - not sure if Mint is faster and doesn't require high spec PC?22:17
rangemongernicomachus: damn, i would have fired it up right now if it did22:17
nicomachusengpy: because anyone can make a linux distro, so lots of people make different ones to fit their preferences. It's all about choice, and with linux you have lots of choices.22:18
SebthreeBQM10HDengpy, there are loads of Ubuntu versions, and actsual other Linux distros as well22:18
Lorne2016Bashing-om Recovery goes to the Recovery menu ...22:18
rangemongerengpy: mint is based on ubuntu so its likely going to run about the same22:18
Bashing-omLorne2016: "resume normal boot " ?22:18
_Sym_SebthreeBQM10HD, well, caja is out becaue it wants the entire mate desktop as a dependency22:19
engpyah I see... Thanks :)22:19
Lorne2016Bashing-om OK - trying that now...22:19
SebthreeBQM10HD_Sym_, ok try thunar then22:19
nicomachusengpy: you can even build your own linux install from scratch, if you want.22:19
ubottuLFS is Linux From Scratch ( http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ ) - not to be confused with !LTS, which is the long term support release of Ubuntu22:19
_Sym_SebthreeBQM10HD, yah, i'm gonna give that a try, thanks22:19
ewertonMy computer supports heavy games, I just bought a gtx960, but shadow of mordor works fine only "medium", dying light works fine only "minimum", this is bad port for developers?22:19
SebthreeBQM10HD_Sym_, but that might want prety muc the whole of xfce still22:20
Lorne2016Bashing-om   WOW....ok - so its up (!)...  Obviously the screen is out of proportion and ugly...but its my machine22:20
nicomachusewerton: possible that it's a bad port. that happens too often. you might check with #gamingonlinux, they generally have a pretty good idea of which ports are bad and which ones are fixable22:20
engpynicomachus: not really I can't - but I got your point :)22:20
nicomachusewerton: that might be ##linuxgaming....22:20
_Sym_SebthreeBQM10HD, no, thunar only wants a few xfce libs and exo libs22:21
nicomachusit's #gamingonlinux. haha22:21
SebthreeBQM10HD_Sym_,  oh ok nice, but what's exo libs ? exo ?22:21
rangemonger_Sym_: did you turn off the force suggested packages thing?22:21
ewertonok, thanks bro22:21
sol0Hi all, my google chrome icons in system tray look strange. Any ideas? Here is how it looks- http://imgur.com/a/6AQfc22:22
SebthreeBQM10HDrangemonger,   not sure if it's that, probably just general depanances for caja etc22:22
_Sym_rangemonger, im not sure what you are referring to22:22
Lorne2016Bashing-om  Should I go to the nVidia site - and download new drivers?22:22
engpybut I have still my wifi problem is not solved - when ubuntu goes to sleep mode /hibernate I lose my wifi connection list and disconnect from internet, it requires a restart or relog...22:22
_Sym_rangemonger, oh, im only using apt-get install from command line22:22
rangemonger_Sym_: by default package managers on ubuntu treat recomended packages as required ones, this can be disabled22:22
Lorne2016Bashing-OM : Jordan_U ...or should I get some output now, so you have a baseline incase the graphics drivers bork it again?22:23
rangemonger_Sym_: i think even commandline apt does this by deault22:23
Bashing-omLorne2016: Well . There is hope then that the issue is in the X layer . That the foundation is solid . .. NO on going to nvidia fro the driver . That is a means of last resort . we have better alternatives in ununtu .22:23
engpyis there a magical code that make my wifi never goes away?22:23
_Sym_rangemonger, ok. apt-get install is only asking to install the depends22:23
rangemongerbut it might be calling suggested items as depends22:24
Lorne2016Bashing-om  OK cool.22:24
rangemongerit just lumps them all together as depends22:24
_Sym_rangemonger, if I say "apt-cache show thunar" it shows me what the recommended packags are and they are are not included22:24
nicomachusengpy: I think that's a bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/157434722:24
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1574347 in OEM Priority Project "[SRU] Re-read the link type if the name changed" [Critical,Fix released]22:24
rangemonger_Sym_: i know but a lot of those depends might not really be depends22:25
nicomachusengpy: there may be a fix though, we can try it if you have a couple minutes and an open terminal22:25
_Sym_rangemonger, where do I look to turn that off?22:25
rangemongeri can test thunar out, i have a minimal ubuntu installed with nothing but xorg and synaptic added22:25

hugospintohello. I have dual boot Windows 10 + ubuntu 16.04. I just shrinked my windows partition, so that I can extend my ubuntu partition. I have a EFI boot partition on the start of the HDD, but I also have a grub2 bootloader for ubuntu which I currently use primarily. Lorne2016Bashing-om OK = that seemed to be working awesome... but it did encounter a couple errors... I pasted the last bit here http://pastebin.com/G0x6BBVm23:11

Lorne2016Bashing-om  Anything to worry about - or should I go ahead and try re-booting normally?23:12
hugospinto(to the left, so I will move the start of it)23:12
hugospintoJordan_U (to the left, so I will move the start of it)23:16
Bashing-omLorne2016: look'n ^ .23:16
Jordan_Uhugospinto: If you use GParted to move Ubuntu's partition to the left and to make Windows' partition smaller, and this is a UEFI based system, and you do nothing else, then you should still be able to boot fine. Always have boot media on hand just in case, and as always make sure all of your important data is backed up (moving to the left involves reading and writing a lot of data, taking a long time,23:17
Jordan_Uand leaving a large window where losing power could be disastrous).23:17
reisioyou'll be better off in the long run if you pick a single OS to use :p23:18
Bashing-omLorne2016: Yeah ., we have a situatiuon here ,, as it is UEFI out of my experience range . Jordan_U and others know . but for now . reboot and let's see how serious it is .23:18

Lorne2016Bashing-om  OK - signing off...and re-booting...cya on the flipside...23:19
hugospintoJordan_U yes I am using GParted. My question is what will happen to the grub2 bootloader which I believe is my first bootloader right now. it is placed on sda5. so if I move sda5 to the left, how will the boot process know where it is loaded?23:21
willsketchupworkmy keyboard and track pad don't work. The laptop shut off and they stopped working. maybe because it overheated or something. I know for a fact the keyboard works when it is booting up but not after.23:23
Jordan_Uhugospinto: UEFI firmware understands partition tables and filesystems. The first portion of grub is stored in a file, /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi . The path /boot/efi/ is a mountpoint for your EFI System Partition, which is likely not on sda5 but rather probably sda1. In your boot firmware there is an entry that says to look for the partition with a certain GPT UUID and open the file within that at23:33
Jordan_Uthe path EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi . Neither the UUID nor this path will be changed by resizing or moving partitions.23:33
Jordan_Uhugospinto: With other tools you might have to worry about partitions being re-ordered, which might cause problems with grub, (though only if they were oddly ordered in the first place), but GParted should keep partition numbers the same as well.23:34
jwrI've got a new laptop with ubuntu preinstalled from the factory. what's the best way to take what I have now, but redo it on a fresh install so as to use full disk encryption?23:34
Jordan_Ujwr: Can you figure out if the OEM modifies Ubuntu for that hardware in any way? If not, then I would just re-install normally.23:36
jwrJordan_U: they have added some dell specific PPA's, and there's some kernel modules named "dell_laptop, dell_hotkeys" and so on. so i wouldn't be surprised if they had modified it, or at least done stuff that i wouldn't just know off the top of my head.23:37
