SkeetCan someone help me repair my grub menu on win10/ubuntu dualboot? Encountering this error http://paste.ubuntu.com/23691239/00:03
tewardSkeet: that... isn't a grub error, that's a packaging conflict, are you using any odd PPAs, or non-Ubuntu repositories?00:05
SkeetI'm currently booted in to boot-repair from a usb drive. My win10 partition and ubuntu partition will not boot because grub is not installed00:05
SkeetAnd i do not know if I am or not because I cannot boot in my ubuntu to check my repositories for unkown sources00:06
PocketUserYou could use bit bleach. Does the job usually. Failing that it would be a quick script to suck out the logs... Whatever the hardware one is called00:06
PocketUserNot sure how to put time and date parameters round it tho... Those logs could be a truck in size!00:08

onthelinedo a "boot testing software" exists? like a emulator/VM that would say "ya, your FS is fine and will probably boot"..00:48
tomreynit would be nice if part of the installer media was r/w and you could store your answers to the installer prompts there and reload them on your next try, so you you'd only need to redo those things you actually want to change, not the entire installation.00:48

tomreynso, just to make sure we're agreeing on this: you are aware that you moved important parts of the operating system to a location where it won't be found during boot? i.e. unless you move those directories back to where they came from this system won't boot, and probably will fail for other reasons, too02:35

FatherWh0I have an ubuntu external that's become unbootable from drive errors and for some reason my install disk isn't offering reinstall.03:53
FatherWh0what's my best bet for repair?03:54
tomreynkylie: this "unity-settings-daemon main process ended, respawning" seems to point at a (yet undetermined) underlying issue. you may want to try and find out why it keeps ending and respawning. my (limited) understanding is that it should be run once during graphical login and remain running until you logout, or until X exits.03:56
tomreyni'm not sure how to diagnose it further, however03:56

tomreynFatherWh0: what kind of drive errors? by "an ubuntu external", do you mean an external disk drive?03:58
FatherWh0yes, it's a passport. I've forgotten the exact error. I'd have to restart to it to see. Should I or should I attempt some kind of repair while I've got the desktop up?03:59

AquaholicHello?04:01
crazyhorse18it used to work but i think apple has changed something in iOS 1004:01
tomreynhello!04:01
AquaholicI seem to be having an issue with a USB that I DD'd an ISO onto - it now shows as unallocated and only 1.5GB - supposed to be 16.04:02
tomreynkylie: you could try a different desktop environment, sure. apt-cache search '.*-desktop$' for a selection (not all of these are desktop environments, read the descritive texts)04:02

tomreyn!terminal | FatherWh004:06
ubottuFatherWh0: The linux terminal or command-line interface is very powerful. In Unity or GNOME, search the dash for "terminal" and press ENTER. Other desktops: Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal (MATE), K-menu -> System -> Konsole (KDE), or Menu -> Accessories -> LXTerminal (LXDE). Guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal04:06
kylieOh, MATE may be it (from the answer by ubottu), looking again04:06
AquaholicOr CTRL+ALT+T works on most04:06
tomreynFatherWh0: you can do a file system check (fsck) on all partitions / file systems on your disk04:06
tomreyn!fsck | FatherWh004:07
ubottuFatherWh0: fsck is the FileSystem ChecKer, which runs automatically when you boot if you didn't shutdown cleanly. Type "man fsck" for information on running it manually. The command "sudo touch /forcefsck && sudo shutdown -r now" will force a reboot and a filesystem check; "sudo touch /fastboot" will skip a filesystem check at next reboot04:07
kylieOK, I see MATE now.04:07
kylieInstalling...04:07
kylieAfter I install, how do I remove Unity?04:07
tomreynFatherWh0: ... and you can inspect the S.M.A.R.T. data to get an idea of the health of the drive, too.04:07
tomreyn!smart | FatherWh004:07
ubottuFatherWh0: smart is Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, a monitoring system for hard drives. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools04:07
xanguakylie: I believe the mate desktop site has commands to remove unity and gnome components, but it's better just to leave it alone or fresh install Ubuntu mate04:09
AquaholicSo uh, just wondering, how can I expand the unallocated space to fill what it's supposed to have?04:09
waltmanI finally got to a shell prompt, but I can't do very much04:09
tomreynkylie: sudo apt-get purge ubuntu-desktop04:09
waltmanI'm not sure how I could try to manually mount a drive to see what /etc looks like.04:10
xanguatomreyn: that will only remove a metapackage04:10
kyliexangua, I guess the better question then would be, how do I *switch* from Unity to MATE? Is there an option when I login with  lightdm?04:10
xanguakylie: I just arrived so I don't know what you're up to/whywant to switch from unity to mate04:11
tomreynxangua, kylie: true, kylie should follow it up with: sudo apt-get --purge autoremove04:11
tomreynkylie: but indeed you probably dont need to uninstall unity unless disk space is a concern. you can select the desktop environment to login to at the graphical login prompt.04:12
kyliexangua, Unity isn't working properly, and so far no one knows how to fix it. By switch, I just mean not starting Unity when I login04:12
waltmanI've run out of things to try.04:12
AquaholicUh - okay - I tried to overwrite the first 512 bits with zeroes, and now a 16GB drive is showing up on the side, but gParted is still only showing the 1.5GB unallocated space04:12
FatherWh0tomreyn: It restarted. It did not run the check from what I can tell. i am at the command prompt now.04:12
kylie(Another problem I noticed just now: alt-tab sometimes takes forever, sometimes not.)04:13
xanguakylie: that sounds like an XY problem to me: X doesn't work, install Y04:13
xanguakylie: what are your system specs?04:13
kyliexangua, I haven't yet gotten support to fix the original problem.04:13
kyliexangua, Hmm, how can I find them? I have a Panasonic CF-C204:14
tomreynAquaholic use the command 'lsblk' to identify the device name of the drive. usually something starting "sd". then run: "sudo parted /dev/sdX print 2>&1 | pastebinit" (replacing the X) and provide the url.04:14
kyliexangua, Intel integrated graphics, 4 GB ram, using ubuntu from an external hard drive04:15
kyliexangua, re the XY problem, it was a workaround due to the lack of support04:15
xanguakylie: looks more than capable of using unity or any other desktop you want, also uses Intel graphics, weird04:16
kyliexangua, Are there any other system specs you were looking for?04:16

AquaholicHere it is Tomreyn: http://paste.ubuntu.com/23692385/04:17
kyliexangua, What do you mean by your question about an external drive?04:17
xanguakylie: why using Ubuntu from an external drive? USB 2 port?04:17
crazyhorse18xangue: ah ok.. so basically need to do it on a macbook instead04:17
kyliexangua, Don't want to remove Windows 10 as I lease this computer04:18
FatherWh0tomreyn: it's ok. I took from what you told me and sorted out the commands I needed. It's fixed. :) I have desktop04:18
xanguacrazyhorse18: you can also compile latest libimobiledevice04:19
xanguaAnd keep up to date04:19
kyliexangua, I Don't know if it's a USB 2 port, good question04:19
crazyhorse18xangua: yeah i tried adding the ppa.. but didn't work on ubuntu 14.0404:20
crazyhorse18i'll try compile04:20
tomreynAquaholic: so that's a 16 GB device (or file?) you are looking at, with the first 1 MB used for partition table and master boot record. it has a sdingle partition on it which consumes all available space.04:20
tomreynAquaholic: and your goal is now what?04:21
AquaholicTomreyn: Opening GParted, it shows that drive - the issue is it shows no partitions, only 1.5GB of unallocated space.04:21
kyliexangua, May I tell you the problem I said earlier?04:21
tomreynFatherWh0: great, it'S glad you were able to fix it with just that.04:21
AquaholicTomreyn: My goal is, in the end, get it back to normal in GParted, and then later make a bootable Linux drive so I can fix another computer04:22
tomreynAquaholic: can you show the output of: ls -l /dev/sdc04:22
=== Zren_ is now known as Zren
AquaholicTomreyn: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1680719872 Dec 27 12:13 /dev/sdc04:23
FatherWh0Might be the wrong place but anyway.. I tested out raspberry pi's new Pixel because it's supposed to be useful on older pc's. Ended up with "ldlinux.c32 failed to load" which I'm guessing is incompatibility with the hardware. Can anyone advise another release I might try for an older pc?04:23
tomreynAquaholic: so this is a file, not a block device node. you must have made an error replacing the device node by a file.04:24
AquaholicSo - how may I fix it? I DD'd a linux bootable disk iso onto the drive, which I'm fairly sure was the cause.04:24
tomreynAquaholic: this is recoverable, but  you won't be able to work with the disk which is / was sdc until you move that file out of the way and re-attach the drive04:25
xanguaFatherWh0: Lubuntu04:25
AquaholicTomreyn: Alright - how could I move that file out of the way? I know how to use the basic commands such as DD, Ls, etc.04:26
tomreynAquaholic: you probably tried to dd an ISO to the drive, but actually overwrote a symbolic link at this location (dd will not resolve symbolic links provided as a destination in its 'of' parameter)04:26
tomreynAquaholic: sudo mv /dev/sdc /tmp/  # - this assumes oyu have sufficient space available in /tmp. check available space there using: df -h /tmp04:27
waltmanSo I've done everything you all have suggested about trying to make a bootable system, but it still won't boot. After a minute or so the boot process gave up and dropped me to a shell prompt. Is there any way I can mount the drives and look and see what the installer did?04:27

waltmantomreyn: I've been at this since 2 pm est. I'm feeling more than a little fried.04:34
kyliebrooksxangua, And I don't think it's the speed of the external hard drive that is the issue here04:35
waltmanHaving you want me to to take a picture of what's in /dev isn't helping.04:35

kyliebrooksPlus, I don't think I'm able to lease a computer with Linux unfortunately, don't have the $04:35

tomreynwaltman: i'm not sure what to say. this seems to be one of your first installations using the ubuntu serve rinstaller, and you picked a somewhat complex configuration. with complexity comes proneness to error. it's not easy to get this stuff right, and usually won'T work at the first try, or first tries. reading up on how partitiojing is done in a uefi scenario with multiplke RAIDs and LVM before you tried it might have saved some time.04:40

waltmanI've tried at least a dozen different configurations now. Each time it takes at least half an hour to setup, and you can't see what the installer's actually doing. It's incredibly frustrating.04:43
tomreyni think there is an installer log file written while the installaiton takes place, you could access it by pressing ctrl-alt-f1 and logging in there (ctrl-at-f7 should return to the installer)04:44
waltmanPlus half the time I can't even get it to boot from my flash drive instead of the hd.04:44

xanguacluelessperson: I don't use chromium but usually install restricted extras and I see that installs video codecs for chromium04:58
buddertomreyn: what is the size of those? I shrunk 40gb while in windows disk management for ubuntu, and also i don't know how much it is planning to set for swap04:58
tomreynbudder: i couldn't tell fomr this output either, i think it will assign as much swap as you have RAM. and it will assign the rest of the largest unallocated space for ubuntu. i.e. it will consumke those 50 GB you made available.04:59
tomreyn* 40 GB05:00
waltmantomreyn: I'm a postdoc at Drexel in Philadelphia. We work with biologists to help then analyze 100s of gb of timelapse microscope data.05:00
maxtypelike a champ, thx again !05:00
tomreynbudder: you could change this later by booting from the installer again, choosing to use the live system, and by searching starting gparted, which is a graphical utility similar to windows disk management, but it can handle linux file systems and resize them.05:01
lburtonhey folks -- I hit a bit of an issue -- hitting a number of mirrors including what resolves for me for security.ubuntu.com I'm missing php7.0-fpm's security release example mirror: curl http://mirror.pnl.gov/ubuntu/dists/xenial-security/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz | gunzip  | grep 7.0.8 | grep fpm05:01

tomreynwaltman: okay, try pinging me in some 8 or 10 hours05:07

waltmanThis is interesting though. If I boot into the shell in the installer and look in /proc/partitions, I see sda, sda1 and sda2. In busybox I onlt see sda.05:07
cluelesspersonDoes anyone know how to support FLASH in chromium on ubuntu?05:08
Peppernrinothere isn't a ubuntu. hm...05:08

Peppernrino?05:09
waltmanI did this so I found run fdisk and make sure the partitions were actually there.05:09
tomreynwaltman: if busybox only shows sda without partitions this suggests the installation didn't go right, however.05:09
tomreynPeppernrino: i do know about BOINC, but let's not discuss it here unless it's related to ubuntu support. we can always talkin #ubuntu-pfftopic. although i'm about to rest.05:10
Peppernrinoall good tomreyn05:11
Peppernrinokk4ewt: this should have worked then, no? : http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/xenial-backports/05:11
waltmanwhen I mount sda1, it says it's vfat, not fat32. also it's empty.05:11
tomreynwaltman: okay, i'm heading out, please keep the notes you made for tomorrow, you'll probably need to sum it all up again for me since i will have forgot much of it by then.05:12
waltmanok05:13
tomreynwaltman: i'll probably try to do the 'same' installation here in a VM tomorrow, this should make it easier to understand what you're looking at, and to learn where i failed, too. ;)05:14

wafflejockweston, yeah figured you were asking cause of some issue in that version but if it's not in the repos not really supported here... you can look up the build flags for a given package though and can try rebuilding a newer version of the code yourself if you can't find a prepackaged one you can trust, PPAs and 3rd party stuff isn't supported here though since it can have side effects06:13

LinuxNoviceok.07:46
wafflejockLinuxNovice, gnome-toolkit it's a set of libraries for making graphical stuff namely for gnome07:46
FlannelLinuxNovice: The different desktops may use different libraries for making GUIs.  In order to run programs designed for those libraries, you need to have the libraries installed (obviously).07:47
redmatriaI found this thread on glossy screens. https://hardforum.com/threads/the-new-glossy-ah-ips-dell-s2415h.1836144/07:48
redmatriaI had a glossy NEC screen years back. It was beautiful.07:48
LinuxNoviceis it pre installed in Lubuntu or Ubuntu or any of its flavours?07:48
FlannelLinuxNovice: If you go mixing programs from significantly different desktop environments, you may end up with many graphics libraries.  It's not the end of the world, but it uses more disk space (and other resources).07:48
wafflejockredmatria, personal opinion but think matte screens probably do better since so many laptops/portable devices and working with glossy in the sun is no fun (excuse the rhyme)07:49
FlannelLinuxNovice: Ignore what I was syaing about GTK, it was an example, and at your point, the specific details aren't important.07:49
redmatriawafflejock, For a desktop glossy really reduces eyestrain based on what I am reading.07:49

FlannelLinuxNovice: No.07:49
redmatriawafflejock, HP now has a "low haze" option on some of its screens.07:50
FlannelLinuxNovice: You can mix and match all you'd like.  You can even install Lubuntu and then turn it into Ubuntu (or vice versa), or half and half, or whatever.  Because they're all the same package repositories.07:50

chxSigh. https://www.nginx.com/resources/wiki/start/topics/tutorials/install/ this has nothing on this stiuation.10:55
abijma<ikevin>ok and next?10:56
cfhowlettchx, that page explicitly describes how to install on ubuntu.  what more do you need?10:57
chxI am trying to replace my ubuntu provided nginx with the nginx provided one , how could i do this with minimal / no downtime?10:57
chxthat.10:57
ikevinabijma, now check if phpinfo show you the correct version10:57
chxapt-get install nginx errors out with  trying to overwrite '/usr/share/nginx/html/index.html', which is also in package nginx-common 1.10.0-0ubuntu0.16.04.310:57
chxi am afraid that if i apt-get remove nginx-common nginx-core then it'll stop the nginx daemon.10:57
chxwhich is exactly what i'd like to avoid.10:58
cfhowlettchx, best you ask the nginx support channels for that level of support.10:58
ikevinchx, you can force the override of the file with dpkg10:58
stark_hi11:01
stark_is this official ubuntu support?11:01
abijma<ikevin> hmm... obviously now apache config is stuck ;-) weird thing.. if i add php info to default www it doesn't  render the php code11:01
abijma<ikevin> could it be that php is not yet activated under current apache2 install?11:01
chxikevin: hrm, won't that override all configuration files including customized ones?11:01
cfhowlettstark_, now we know you're trolling.  you were here before so obviously you know exactly what this channel is for.  i'm beginning to understand why the mint channel kicked you.11:02
ikevinabijma, try a2enmod php5.611:02

abijmanope(http://abijma.nl/info.php)11:10
abijma<ikevin> nope(http://abijma.nl/info.php)11:10
ikevinabijma, look like a php error, check in /var/log/apache2/error.log11:12
abijma<ikevin> client denied by server configuration so guess i need to check apache config?11:15
ikoniaabijma: this sounds like you have made a terrible mess of your setup11:15
ikevinabijma, yes, apache2.4 have some new config11:15
ikoniaabijma: would it not be simple to use a supported configuration rather than this mess11:15
ikoniathe <directory> parameter is very different between 2.2 and 2.4 - again, would it not be simpler to use a supported configuration11:16
ikoniathis looks like an unsupportable mess11:16
ikevinabijma, you maybe need to add "Require all granted" to the default directory11:17
ikoniait's not just the grant11:17
ikevinikonia, some times it's just sufficient to have a basic vhost working11:18
ikoniaikevin: why are you pusing this approach11:18
ikoniait's a total mess ?11:18
ikevinwhen i upgrade my server from 2.2 to 2.4, i just need to set that to have all my vhost working11:19
ikoniaI mean why are you pushing this over complex solution of php / apache when you could just use the supported packages11:20
ikoniathese PPA's and conflicts are just going to end in a mess11:20
abijma<ikevin><ikonia> hmm ok..;-) but if i have first one vhost working then we now that it works and i can start going on to get other vhost working. that i can handle my self i hope...11:20
ikoniathe fact that I've had time to get food, go to the shop and light a fire and PHP is still not working suggests the effort is just crazy for what is a simple situation11:20
ikevinikonia, he don't want to upgrade ubuntu, so ppa or compilation is the only way to get php 5.6 on precise11:20
ikoniawhy doesn't he want to upgrade11:21
ikoniait's going to be an unsupported mess11:21
blackflowI agree with ikonia11:21
ikoniaworking outside the package limitations of the version your on is crazy11:21
ikoniait will end with more of a mess than it already is11:21
blackflowDon't deviate from defaults unless you really know what you're doing11:21
ikevinikonia, i don't know why he don't want to upgrade, i just reply to his question11:21
ikoniamaybe that should be the real question11:22
ikoniaeither that or why he needs a different PHP version on the "wrong" platform11:22
abijma<ikevin> i tried several times to upgrade and that didn't work either..11:22
abijmabut if that is the real hard advice to do may'be i should find that out.. i thought this would be easy todo also11:23
ikoniaabijma: you won't be able to do a clean safe upgrade now11:23
ikoniaabijma: you've put a load of PPA's in there that will cause conflicts11:23
abijmabut do you say that you never ever should advice to make use of PPA's?11:24
ikeviniirc, ubuntu ask to disable ppa while upgrading11:24
abijmahmmm...11:24

There's also plenty of native ways, like simple copy, rsync, tarballing, LVM/btrfs/ZFS snapshots, etc... making an "ISO" disk, even if possible, is least of the recommended ways. An "ISO backup disk" not only doesn't make sense, but even if one did make an iso image... what for? it's not native, you12:31

BackwardsBackflow, a bit of advice may go a long way here and for anyone else: There is a boot disk called: "Ultimate Boot Disk" also there is:  "Bart's Boot Disks" in which you can find on Google and that is the end of this discussion. Do your homework.12:33
olesMonkeyDust, thx12:33

abijma<ikonia> i understand... but if i can get it running now then it gives me some time to do a fresh installation12:33
blackflowtenX: I haven't, I use ZFS and I do zfs send|recv with snapshots for backups.12:33

SebthreeBQM10HDwiggmpk, have you got ubuntu installed already ?15:25
SebthreeBQM10HDwiggmpk, yeah wiki.ubuntu.com sounds ok15:26
wiggmpkSebthreeBQM10HD: I'm actually getting ready for a reinstall15:26
SebthreeBQM10HDwiggmpk, well make sure it's from the offical site then, and sure you could start with the ISO for that instead15:26
wiggmpkSebthreeBQM10HD: made some mistakes with my partitioning15:26
SebthreeBQM10HDwiggmpk, oh such as?15:27
wiggmpkSebthreeBQM10HD: encrypted home directory sounds nice, but it causes problems downloading games in Steam, torrents with longer file names being unable to be saved. I'd like to separate my /opt partition and put all my games on there so I don't have to reinstall them. I'd also like to check out Windows 10, pretty smooth in Virtualbox and looks nicer than the previous versions.15:28

SebthreeBQM10HDwiggmpk, I think if the whole disk isn't encrpted and just /home then things aren't so secure anyway15:30

VileGentJojoCrazy, what ubottu posted above16:53
EriC^^mmanso: well, uefi has a list of efi entries, and they point to an efi file that's located on a fat32 efi partition, and the partition table is usually gpt, legacy for it to work with gpt needs a bios-boot partition so grub can be installed there16:53
thinkySnowboarder: how is the performance on sd card?16:53
thinkyi mean full ubuntu desktop not live cd16:53
VileGentthinky, slow16:53
thinkyreally?16:53
thinky:S16:53
VileGentyes16:53
EriC^^mmanso: if you create a gpt partition table, and a bios-boot partition and an efi partition, you could install grub-pc (legacy) and have it install itself in the bios-boot partition, and then install the grub-efi-amd64-signed package and have grub-efi install to the efi partition16:54

mmansoEriC^^:  I've created a gpt partition scheme, 1 partition with 200mb fat32 for efi, one for swap and one for the root filesystem... Do I need an extra one for the bios-boot?16:54

EriC^^mmanso: still though uefi uses the efi list in its nvram to boot the efi file so a fresh pc wouldn't have ubuntu there, you could try to let grub install with the argument --removable-disk or something like that, and it will install the efi file to <efi partition>/efi/Boot/Bootx64.efi which is the standard path for removable disks16:55
EriC^^mmanso: if you can control the process further, i'd have it copy that file to <efi partition>/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi as that's the default path for windows and most uefi is hardcoded to boot that by default16:56
thinkyhttps://www.sandisk.com/home/memory-cards/sd-cards/extreme-sd-uhs-i16:56
EriC^^mmanso: yes you need a 1mb bios-boot partition (hex code ef02)16:56

VileGentmmanso, efi is 64bit16:57

EriC^^mmanso: there is a 32bit efi version16:58
VileGentthinky, so you have no idea what the speed of that bus is16:58

mmansoEriC^^: So, I create the partitions, I install ubuntu in legacy mode (which the installed does by default) and after that I use the grub-efi-ia32 to configure the EFI into the EFI parititon. Something like this?16:59
tomreynmmanso: while the approach EriC^ and you discussed should work fine (for 64-bit systems), have you considered to switch from a disk imaging to a pxe installation method? it can be more efficient, and, moreover, much more flexible.16:59

mmansotomreyn: problem is that nowadays we've different machines with different boot types and the image should handle them17:00
EriC^^mmanso: and also maybe copying it to aforementioned windows path17:01
thinkyi am using dual boot currently and i thought instead of creating partition for ubuntu i could install it in sd card17:01
distortedvoicenicomachus, the pro drivers work great. Thanks for your help.17:01
mmansoEriC^^: the machine has no windows... these instalations are for single OS (ubuntu)17:02
EriC^^mmanso: yes, it's cause when you put the image on a fresh pc it wont have the efi entries in its uefi17:02
EriC^^and windows path and efi/boot/bootx64.efi are default hardcoded paths in the uefi17:02
tomreynmmanso: i admit pxe comes with its own set of complexities, your approach is probably better if you are dealing with a diverse (and loosely defined) set off hardware17:02

tomreynVileGent: since "with all the updates" is not a persistent state (it will get outdated after just a few days or even hours), why does it matter?17:17
tomreynVileGent: i'd just stick to point releases and install updates from there.17:18
tomreynVileGent: "point releases" refers to the updates releases of major releases, i.e. 16.04.0 -> 16.04.1 -> 16.04.2 ...17:19

VileGenttomreyn, i understand, but updates fix bugs17:19

tomreynVileGent: yes, that's why you should use the latest point release to install, and install updates from the network either during or post installation17:20
VileGentand at times it is better to install with all the fixes out of the box so people are not vunerable to the major bug of the month (heartbleed, madcow etc)17:20

ubottusnowcatman: You can use your <tab> key for autocompletion of nicknames in IRC, as well as for completion of filenames and programs on the command line.22:46
ogonotronhey guys, I have a weird bug with keyboard shortcuts on gnome22:47
ogonotronalt tab changes windows but how do I do this for the same application?22:47
Bashing-omsnowcatman: Is this a fresh install .. with 1194 pending upgrades not likely - else what are you upgrading from ? .. this to have an idea of how to proceed here .22:47
anliCan I have nautilus opened when I press super+E in gnome?22:47
IamKrilcovwhere can i find a good resource for hardening my desktop 16.04?22:48
gebruikeranli: probably yes, you have to setup keyboard shortcuts. most Desktop Environments and / or Window Managers have it. I would suggest you to ask in #gnome to be sure22:49
gebruikeranli: also state which version of gnome you are using and the ubuntu version22:49
snowcatmanupgrading from 16.04 to latest. your right not a fresh install. this is my plex media center. plex.tv22:49
tomreynsnowcatman: is this a linux distribution based on ubuntu?22:51
gebruikerIamKrilcov: ubuntu wiki22:51
snowcatmanit is ubuntu22:51
tomreynsnowcatman: show the output of: sudo apt-get update  2>&1 | pastebinit; sudo apt-cache policy 2>&1 | pastebinit22:53
snowcatmanok working on it22:53
tomreynBashing-om: oh you were already helping him, i didnt notice, sorry.22:54
Bashing-omtomreyn: snowcatman Hard row to hoe here , we can try .22:55
tomreynsnowcatman: the above commands will error out unless you have the "pastebinit" software (package) installed22:56
IamKrilcovhow do I register my nick?22:56
snowcatmanit will not install22:56
tomreyn!register | IamKrilcov22:57
ubottuIamKrilcov: For information on registering your IRC nick, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InternetRelayChat/Registration - For any further help, ask in #freenode.22:57
tomreynsnowcatman: you will need to be more verbose than that22:57
snowcatmani am not able to install anything at this point22:58
tomreynwhat does this return: echo 'Hello world' | pastebinit22:58
tomreynsnowcatman: ^22:58
snowcatmani am working from 2 pc's it will take me a little bit to give you a answere...    command not found23:00
ogonotronguys wtf? I just installed ubuntu gnome today and getting loads of crashes23:01
ogonotronand some functionality just not working23:01
ogonotronis this the norm for ubuntu?23:01
tomreynsnowcatman: ehco 'Hello world' | nc termbin.com 999923:01
anliI made a mistake, cannot sudo any longer, was replacing secure paths with /23:03
aurigaeI just opened a 2004 barolo in your and the devs honor23:04
anliI thought it was recursive23:04
snowcatmantermbin/K9gz23:04
anliCan I reset the suoders file?23:05
snowcatmanok think i am starting to feel a pit releaved something worked. smiles23:05
srulianli: can you "sudo su" ?23:06
anliAh, I did pkexec visudo23:06
snowcatmanok next step please23:08
Antareshttp://rexant.org.ru/Sektor_Gaza.torrent23:09
anliI managed to edit the sudoers file, nice, now, I tried to add a line like anders  ALL=(ALL:ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL with no apparent effect23:09
anliI am still prompted for password when I run sudo23:09
SebthreeBQM10HDhi kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk23:09
SebthreeBQM10HDanli, sudo should have a password23:10
ogonotroncan anyone here me?23:10
anliok, but I do not want it to have one23:10
kahrnyup23:10
dachyHey guys, I'm looking at some tutorials on setting up ubuntu as a router, using iptables, and am wondering what the difference between these commands are:  iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT and  iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT23:10
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, no23:10
srulianli: is it not safe to have sudo without password, however you might need to logout and log back in for that change to have effect23:11
ogonotronk, well this gnome desktop is scaring me23:11
ogonotronit doesn't do what I tell it to do23:11
anliok, I do not select linux for it safety at the moment23:11
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, oh ?23:11
SebthreeBQM10HDhow so ?23:11
Bashing-omsnowcatman: termbin.com/K9gz gives a 404 error . Not able to termbin to this time . try again . we must have a means to see the results of commands .23:11
kk4ewtsruli, man iptables but iirc -j log23:11
aurigaeogonotron, you might feel more comfortable with xfce23:11
SebthreeBQM10HDXFCE uh23:12
SebthreeBQM10HDGNOME Nice :)23:12
ogonotronkeyboard shortcuts for starters, switch between windows of an applications does not work http://pasteboard.co/1uZSVtDvA.png23:12
srulidachy: -P = policy. -A = rule,23:12
kahrnogonotron: once gnome 3 has the right extensions it is good23:12
dachysruli: explain it to me like i am 523:12
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, kahrn by default it's good23:12
ogonotronI come from cinnamon, it's not the ui that's the problem, its the fact that it is broken23:12
SebthreeBQM10HDbroken how ?23:12
srulidachy: pay me! ;-)23:12
ogonotronwell keyboard shortcuts dont work as they should23:13
SebthreeBQM10HDcinnamon is based on gnome 3 as well23:13
srulidachy:  the policy applies to all interfaces the rule adds an exeption23:13
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, don't use keyboard shorcuts23:13
snowcatmanhttp://termbin/K9gz23:13
kahrnSebthreeBQM10HD: I hate gnome by default. Takes ~10-15 extensions to make it "how i want". just my opinion :)23:13
dachysruli: heh. well, yes/no question, is the first command, with the policy, ok to use? this router will be directly connected to internet and i am afraid of this being abused23:13
dachysruli: i've no idea of iptables tho, and no way to know if its ok or not :/23:14
ogonotronso you see my screenshot http://pasteboard.co/1uZSVtDvA.png. If I have say two nautilus windows open and I press crtl and tab then it should switch between them?23:14
snowcatmanbrb trying again23:14
srulidachy: in your case i might suggest "iptables -P FORWARD REJECT" to deny all traffic, and "iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT" to add a rule to specifically allow this interface to forward23:14
srulidachy: make sure you have local access to the machine before playing with iptables policies and rules in case you get yourself locked out23:15
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, you move around with the mouse mostly in GNOME I think23:15
SebthreeBQM10HDor touch screen23:15
dachysruli: yeah i have local access :)   i will set it up with the second way then :)23:16
dachysruli: i prefer to be restrictive more than permissive when i dont know for sure, which is kinda why i was wondering about the first command23:16
dachysruli: thanks for the sanity check23:17
ogonotronok so it's just me that thinks it not acceptable for keyboard shortcuts to simply not work as they are intended?23:17
srulidachy: the way you originaly posted, you dont need the rule (-A forward) as the policy is already set to allow all... if you want to limit access you have to start with a policy to first deny all23:17
srulidachy: dont forget to add a rule to allow established and related23:17
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, there are keyboard short cuts too, but I don't use23:17
ogonotronyeah but they should work right?23:18
snowcatmanhttp://termbin.com/1nqy ok it works now23:18
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, I guess if they are the GNOME ones23:18
dachysruli: well, i used  ufw to set deny all on the incoming for the external interface... bit unsure how well this works with iptables commands directly :/23:18
srulidachy: i never used ufw, i dont know if it will work well together with iptables.. maybe someone else can answer that23:19
dachysruli: how would one verify that the firewall/external side is set up ok?23:20
sruliogonotron: what is the issue exactly? no shortcuts work or only some?23:20
ogonotronhttp://pasteboard.co/1uZSVtDvA.png look at this pls23:21
sol2017hi23:21
sruliogonotron: and? what is the issue23:21
ogonotronok 3 different closely related keyboard shortcuts: switch windows - switch applications - switch windows of an application23:21
ogonotronbut they ALL just switch windows23:21
ogonotronthey all do the exact same thing23:22
srulidachy: i would have a clue how to answer that.. learn how to be a pen tester.. after you finished your setup paste it to paste.ubuntu.com and see if someone wnats to have a look and comment23:22
ogonotronso if I open say 2 firefox windows and i press ctrl + tab it should only switch between firefox instances rigth?23:22
ogonotronnot all my other windows / apps too23:23
SebthreeBQM10HDmaybe23:23
SebthreeBQM10HDnot on gnoem or firefoxnow23:23
sruliogonotron: let me fire up a gnome vm.. few minutes23:23
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, I think one keyboard shortcut in gnome is to go through everything that's open all programs23:23
ogonotrondude it has nothing to do with firefox, thats just an example of a window23:24
dachysruli: much appreciated, thanks a lot!23:24
ogonotronbut you see the screenshot right? 3 different commands not one23:24
snowcatmanhttp://termbin.com/n09d23:24
ogonotronit's like driving a car and i change gear but everytime it only goes into reverse23:25
ogonotronstick shift23:25
sruliogonotron: "change gear" is the correct term ;-)23:25
ogonotroni like the look of gnome but it seems broken to me23:25
Bashing-omsnowcatman: This is a busy channel, if you do not use nicks to address  then your entry will be lost in the traffic .23:26
ogonotronsorry to sound like an ass but running Linux mint cinnamon im used to things just working23:26
incognito-dgI'm running gnome in 14.04 and all the applets on the right hand disappeared in cluding web connection indicator, volume, time, date, user, and the gear like power off symbol. How can I get them back. I tried several commands I found online, but didn't work. One of them made my whole gnome panel disappear.23:26
ogonotronand im no noob with linux, just new to gnome23:26
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, Cinnamon will work in any distro that supports it :)23:26
SebthreeBQM10HDor should23:26
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, Mint is mostly pointless now, afer they dropped codecs by default I think23:27
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, screenshot link again so I can go on,  can't easilly scroll up on this tablet23:27
ogonotronseb you dont seem to understand the context of my issue23:27
SebthreeBQM10HDin this set up23:27
snowcatmansorry Bashing-om, working on my skills still23:27
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, it's about what keyboard short cuts do or not23:29
ogonotronyes23:29
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, I am Ubuntu tablet, so Unity 8 as well,  no clickable links in  IRC chat, but can copy and paste23:29
ogonotronwell a few other things but one issue at a time23:29
Bashing-omsnowcatman: Doing good, It is all a process of learning . OK. we have a working termbin relay . Next up is to look at your sources . Pastebin : ' cat -n /etc/apt/sources.list ' and ' tail -v -n +1 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* ' .23:29
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, so if you want me to see image,  put link again, can't scroll up that easilly23:30
ogonotronhttp://pasteboard.co/1uZSVtDvA.png23:30
ogonotrontake a look pls, I'll brb in 523:31
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, yes what it says there23:31
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, there's like activites with programs open,  there will be a shortcut to go    through23:32
SebthreeBQM10HDI think23:32
snowcatmancommand pastebin not found23:32
OerHeksfor unity it is not logical to have 2 instances of 1 application open. alt tab changes application, not application-instance23:33
SebthreeBQM10HDogonotron, just play with shortcuts and see what do, can also change to own23:33
snowcatmanBashing-om command pastebin not found23:34
SebthreeBQM10HDOerHeks, no no he's using GNOME 323:34
Bashing-omsnowcatman: ' cat -n /etc/apt/sources.list | nc termbin.com 9999 ' should be priductive :)23:34
Bashing-omproductive*23:34
snowcatmanok23:34
sruliogonotron: for me the it works fine, however CTRL+TAB shows applications + windows of current application23:37
ogonotronbut ctrl tab should only show the same app only23:38
ogonotronnot other apps23:38
snowcatmanBashing-om http://termbin.com/ohjf23:38
FishPencilHow can I find my IPv6 gateway?23:40
sruliogonotron: it doesnt specify "this app" hoever, although it shows a preview of the rest of the apps (like ALT+TAB) it only allows switching of the current app23:41
johnfluxHi all.23:43
johnfluxI can't boot up - the screen is black23:43
johnfluxI have an nvidia gtx 980ti.    I /think/ the problem is to do with secureboot23:43
srulijohnflux: at which point does it turn black?23:43
ogonotronok im gonna try a reboot brb23:44
johnfluxsruli: I see the ubuntu logo, and then it turns black when X launches23:44
srulijohnflux: did you try setting nomodset in grub?23:44
johnfluxIn /var/log/Xorg.0.log I get:     xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)23:44
johnfluxsruli: nomodeset  you mean, right?   yes.  I get the above error when I do^^23:45
srulijohnflux: did you try disbaling secureboot? although i would think its more eufi than secure boot related23:47
gptomreyn: looks like the problem with the brother supplied files is they install 32bit executables that can't run on a 64bit host. took me a long time to track down the actual cause of the random error messages... trying to throw together a 32bit docker container to see if the drivers actually work23:48
johnfluxsruli: i'm not sure i can disable fastboot23:49
Bashing-omsnowcatman: Some small problems - in the future - with your sources.list file, We can work with it as is for now . Next is ' tail -v -n +1 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* | nc termbin.com 9999 ' .23:49
gpsource code comes with no instructions so if the 32bit version works I guess I can try to figure out the source and compile it myself23:49
srulijohnflux: i was refering to "secureboot" not "fastboot"23:49
ogonotronok no luck lol23:49
ogonotronanyone wanna here about my other bug?23:50
sruliogonotron: lets hear it23:50
ogonotronon the "dash" bar (i think its called)23:50
ogonotronmiddle click to open a new app instance right?23:50
ogonotronleft vertical bar23:50
johnfluxsruli: sorry, I meant that.  The "Secure Boot state" option in the bios is grayed out23:51
srulijohnflux: that means its disbaled, i guess if its disabled you are nbooting in legacy mode?23:51
sruliogonotron: you mean clicking on "activities" ?23:52
ogonotronyeah23:52
ogonotronfavourites23:52
sruliogonotron: for me it wirks with middle andleft click23:52
ogonotronif i middle click firefox icon it makes a new ff right?23:52
ogonotronyes but left click selects already open, middle opens new23:53
johnfluxsruli: no, it's grayed out but enabled.23:53
sruliogonotron: correct23:53
ogonotronwell just wasnt working for nautilus is all23:53
srulijohnflux: how can that be? who is forcing you to use secureboot? what pc is this?23:53
ogonotronit was crashing, making a bug report23:54
snowcatmanBashing-om connot open no such directory or file it says try using netcat23:54
sruliogonotron: works for me.. can you find anything in the details of the bug report?23:54
johnfluxsruli: it's an ASUS motherboard23:54
ogonotronhow do i see old reports?23:55
srulijohnflux: model?23:55
sruliogonotron: dont know, try it again and get new one23:55
srulijohnflux: is it a custom build or a branded PC?23:56
johnfluxsruli: custom build23:57
srulijohnflux: motherboard model23:57
johnfluxsruli: okay, I tried deleting all the secure boot keys, which seems to let me disable it:  http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2225322/asus-uefi-boot-utility-secure-boot.html23:57
johnfluxsruli: I forget the motherboard name, and it doesn't tell me :-)23:58
ogonotronall it says is: GtkListBox with a model will ignore sort and filter functions23:58
ogonotronint he logs, it sotpped generating a report23:58
srulijohnflux: now that you managed to disable it can you boot?23:59
Bashing-omsnowcatman: Try again .. works for me : http://termbin.com/u1aq , is my result .23:59
ogonotrondoesnt matter23:59
