munchkinHelp?00:01
munchkinTrying to get nvidia drivers, proprietary ones00:02
reisiohelp granted00:02
reisiomunchkin: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia00:02
munchkinreisio: thanks. Unfortunately didn't work...00:03
LanDihow can I upgrade securely a 13.10 to 16.04?00:03
munchkinTried that00:03
reisiomunchkin: how so?00:03
Bashing-om!eol | LanDi00:04
ubottuLanDi: End-Of-Life is the time when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more information. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades00:04
munchkinreisio: Selecting it in "additional drivers". Tried purging, but it just froze up additional drivers. Twice00:05
munchkinCuriosity, why would one prefer nouveau drivers in the first place?00:06
Righteou5question for a beginner: im interested in starting the VPS service and i want each individual account to have its own dedicated or static IP address but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for them. What's the best solution this is problem?00:06
reisiomunchkin: well, you can always follow nvidia.com's instructions00:06
Righteou5join #php00:06
sylartomreyn: thanks for your help :) On the learning curve..hopefully i get across it..00:07
Righteou5any takers?00:09
ArcaireRighteou5: This is my space, but I don't really understand your question.00:10
ArcaireI'd also imagine it's probably not suitable for #ubuntu, but I can't tell.00:10
Righteou5it is gray area i guess but i just need a general webhosting solution. I wannt to host virtual private servers and id like for each user to have their own assigned ip adddress. I'd be using ubuntu server in this process but my question is what is the most cost effective way to do this00:12
munchkinreisio: um....thanks?00:12
ArcaireRighteou5: If you want each virtual machine to have its own IP address you will need to purchase those IPs first, you can't really magic them up. The most 'cost-effective' way is to solely use IPv6 which is effectively free, but then you have to ensure that they're still viable without an IPv4 address.00:13
ArcaireFor instance, there's almost no IPv6 connectivity in my entire country. So they would be useless for me. This isn't the case with America and most of Europe as far as I know.00:13
rypervencheRighteou5: You have to pay up front to get what you need to make money. You're not going to be able to have the service on spare parts and make money off of that. Unless it's a really crap service. But no dedicated IPs.00:14
Arcairemunchkin: Nouveau preference because it's free/free.00:14
Righteou5static IP is an option, im trying to find more cost effective ways of doing this00:15
Arcairemunchkin: It is unfortunately the case now, however, where if you have a system from within the last 2 or so years that nouveau is utterly insufficient (and if you have a laptop with a Nvidia card, it's almost mandatory you use the Nvidia driver).00:15
munchkinArcaire: Just because it's free? Does it work best with older cards? I have had bad experiences with it, and am wondering if I'm in the minority00:15
Righteou5some ISP will charge $10 a static IP and im hoping i can find a way to sublease them00:16
ArcaireRighteou5: There's no more cost-effective way than purchasing / leasing the IP space.00:16
rypervencheRighteou5: You would use the server(s) that you have an either manage the services yourself or use programs to do it, but it doesn't sound as though you have the know-how for something that would be able to make money. And what Arcaire said.00:16
Arcairemunchkin: Free and "ethical" (or open-source, whatever - hence free/free). If your system is running, say, Intel Broadwell or newer, you'll have a bad time with Nouveau.00:16
NEURODATA.00:17
NEURODATABest IRC client for ubuntu?00:17
Arcairemunchkin: My laptop is running a 970M and Intel Skylake, and nouveau renders the system useless. It hard-locks on boot. I have to use the Nvidia driver.00:17
coffeeguyweechat ;)00:17
coffeeguyor00:17
ArcaireNEURODATA: Hexchat is probably your best bet.00:17
NEURODATATried HexChat, and it sucked. Tried XChat-Gnome and it sucks more, any suggestions?00:17
Righteou5i do have the know how and i have an out of the box idea actually, i just not understand this portion of it. I haven't hosted anything on a large scale00:18
coffeeguyhexchat if you like gui :)00:18
ArcaireWhat's wrong with Hexchat? :x00:18
NEURODATAHexChat i didnt like00:18
Arcairecoffeeguy: Always one. ;)00:18
rypervencheNEURODATA: Hexchat for GUI, weechat for CLI. Those are the most-used ones.00:18
coffeeguyi really appreciate hexchat00:18
Righteou5what services would i have to manage in a VPS?00:18
NEURODATAi will try weechat thanks00:18
coffeeguy:)00:18
rypervencheRighteou5: Depends on what you're trying to sell.00:18
Righteou5other than providing the equipment,service and a usable Cpanel00:18
ArcaireRighteou5: I've done this before.00:19
reisiowell, no irssi is more used than weechat :p00:19
Righteou5ok so you believe the only solution is to purchase static ips?00:19
reisionot that weechat users want you to know that00:19
Righteou5thank you for answering my questions guys00:19
ArcaireYou effectively manage the host servers, the network, the control panel, the support system, and still end up half-managing all the virtual machines as well.00:19
coffeeguyreisio ;)00:19
minimecreisio: +1 ;) irssi is the way to go...00:19
AmericanuHello again00:19
reisioNEURODATA: but if you were specific about what you don't like about HexChat, you'd get a more useful response00:19
reisiohi amer00:19
rypervenchereisio: I doubt that's true, but agree to disagree. Both are great clients.00:19
* Arcaire uses IRCCloud.00:19
Arcaire:x00:19
AmericanuSo its still having that error00:19
Righteou5i believe in the early stages i will be doing all of that00:20
AmericanuWith missing live thing00:20
Righteou5and its going to be fun juggling00:20
NEURODATADidnt like HexChat because the GUI doesnt match dark theme on my gnome shell00:20
munchkinAny luck that someone could help me with Nvidia drivers extracted to a .run file that I can't run00:20
rypervencheNEURODATA: Then you won't like weechat, lol.00:20
Arcairemunchkin: Wait why are you using the .run file?00:20
ArcaireHold your horses a second. Where are you getting that driver?00:20
rypervenchemunchkin: Dooooon't use the .run files ><00:21
Arcairelol00:21
munchkinLaunchpad, from Ubuntu link that directed me00:21
Righteou5Arcaire" from your prospective is it mandatory in this market to assign static IP or would say subhosting up my domain be doable?00:21
Arcairemunchkin: Alright so there's a bit of an easier way with no .run file and you can use apt.00:22
ArcaireAnd probably it's the way everyone should be doing it.00:22
AmericanuAnybody knows why its giving that missing live file dystem error at boot ,m00:22
minimecNEURODATA: If you want a chat GUI... There is a 'new kid in town'... http://quassel-irc.org/node/10400:22
AmericanuIm using usb 3.0 , i did verify integrity00:22
reisiodunno, people seem to be attracted to weechat because it's "simpler", but at the same time they're developing it and making it less simple00:22
reisioI think there will be disappointment :p00:22
adalbertWhen using Gnupg, what is the difference between a file encrypted vs a file encrypted and signed?00:22
munchkinI'm more used to apt00:22
ArcaireRighteou5: Subhosting is done by things like Heroku, but it's a different target market. It's not for "systems", it's for apps.00:22
Arcairemunchkin: What graphics card do you have?00:23
munchkinDidn't work when I used it to try to install the drivers initially00:23
munchkinArcaire: Nvidia GTX 98000:23
ArcaireDid you already add the apt repository?00:23
ArcaireThe launchpad ppa, that is.00:23
munchkinhonestly at this point, I'm close to giving up00:23
Righteou5Arcaire: thanks for clearing that up, i apoligize if my questions seem stupid im trying to piece this together as i go00:23
munchkinI did00:23
Arcairemunchkin: So after apt-get update, what'd you install?00:23
ArcaireRighteou5: All good!00:24
minimecmunchkin: What exactly is your porblem? I have a gtx1060 here...00:24
rypervencheadalbert: You can verify from whom the file is coming.00:24
AmericanuSo....help?00:24
munchkinNvidia-Current00:24
ArcaireYeah there's your issue.00:24
munchkinWhich actually doesn't show proprietary drivers00:24
ArcaireDon't ask me why, but that driver is ancient.00:25
ArcaireIt's actually nvidia-304. The latest is nvidia-367.00:25
ArcaireI really need to work out the specifics of why that does that. It's dangerous. Even I fell for it a couple of days back.00:25
Arcaire`apt purge nvidia-current && apt install nvidia-367` /should/ install the correct driver for you.00:25
Righteou5Arcaire: do you think using a solution like no-ip is reliable enough? Their corperate headquarters is in town so it's a thought00:25
Righteou5Arcaire: extreme cost cutting as long as it doesnt hurt QoS...lol00:26
ArcaireRighteou5: It's down to what you're intending to offer. I need static IPs.00:26
ArcaireNah that'd hurt qos monstrously.00:26
ArcaireIt adds another link in the chain of things that might go wrong. You want that chain as short as possible.00:27
AmericanuGuys00:28
ArcaireAmericanu: You're not explaining your problem very well at all.00:29
munchkinWell....00:29
AmericanuWell i am trying lol00:29
munchkinNow looking at a grub rescue prompt00:29
minimecmunchkin: Do you get a black screen @boot and no GUI with your nvidia driver?00:30
AmericanuSo: i have a usb 3.0 stick and it has ubuntu 16.04 made with unetbootin. Every time i want to boot it up it says : initramfs unable to find a live medium containing live file system.00:30
munchkinSo.... purging and installing Nvidia cards causes boot manager failure...00:31
munchkinminimec: Yup00:31
minimecmunchkin: Ok. What is your state now. Did you purge the drivers, or are they still installed?00:31
Arcaireminimec: purged nvidia-current, installed nvidia-36700:32
Righteou5Arcaire: do you think 1mb up is good enough for 5 servers?00:33
Ben641mb up isn't good for anything00:33
Arcaire^00:33
munchkinminimec:Yup, what Arcaire said00:33
Righteou5so fiber is the option00:33
Righteou5ok00:33
Ben64you don't need fiber to get >1mbit00:33
minimecmunchkin: I have the same problem. With the current ubuntu nvidia driver my system cannot boot. Additionally I have full-disk-encryption, so I can't even put the password to decrypt the HD.00:34
Righteou5its not mibt00:34
Righteou51000mbps00:34
munchkinLOL00:34
Ben641mb != 1000mbps00:34
charlin有没有会使用R软件的大神00:34
Righteou5yeah i thought you ment00:34
minimecmunchkin: What I do right now is to boot recovery mode, enter my password and 'continue normal boot'. That works.00:34
Righteou51 mbps00:34
Righteou5lol00:34
Arcaireminimec munchkin: You're desktops and not laptops right?00:34
Ben64i did, because thats what you said00:34
charlinanybode know R app?00:35
munchkinArcaire: Right00:35
Righteou5no i mean 1 mbps as in 1 K00:35
minimecArcaire: In my case it's a desktop with a gtx106000:35
Righteou5lol00:35
Ben64Righteou5: you don't make any sense00:35
AmericanuAnybody knows how to fix my issue ? i have a usb 3.0 stick and it has ubuntu 16.04 made with unetbootin. Every time i want to boot it up it says : initramfs unable to find a live medium containing live file system.00:35
Righteou5ok ill move forward then00:35
ubuntumate.00:35
ArcaireAmericanu: Use rufus, not unetbootin00:35
Righteou5if 1mb isnt enough how much should i have00:35
ArcaireRighteou5: 100mbit00:35
Righteou5and what other option beside fiber00:36
Ben64Righteou5: define 1mb00:36
minimecmunchkin: Probalby you can use 'normal boot', if you delete 'quiet' from the linux default boot settings.00:36
AmericanuI did use rufus aswell and it gives the same outcome Arcaire00:36
minimecmunchkin: I did inot test that yet, because I don't want to reboot my system right now...00:36
Righteou5do you think renting a colo is a cost effective move for a shoestring budget00:36
Arcaireminimec: I don't know if it makes a difference with the nvidia driver installed but have you tried nomodeset before?00:36
ArcaireI had this issue with nouveau until I used nomodeset to install the nvidia driver, but I'm using a laptop w/ Optimus.00:37
Ben64Righteou5: do you have an ubuntu question?00:37
Ben64you may want ##networking or #ubuntu-offtopic or something00:37
Righteou5thanks Ben6400:37
minimecArcaire: Yes. 'nomodeset' doesn't work.00:37
Righteou5this is my final question00:37
Righteou5and ill move on00:38
munchkinPast what are you guys normally do when you try to First install Nvidia00:38
munchkinI do a nomodeset00:38
Righteou5renting space in a server room, is that more cost effective do you think than paying for dedicated fiber?00:38
Ben64Righteou5: still not on topic00:38
munchkinHowever, installing them afterwards is....problematic00:38
ArcaireI mean, for my laptop I installed ubuntu, rebooted with nomodeset, then install the proprietary driver, then reboot.00:38
ArcairePretty sure Ben64 was the one who suggested nomodeset and saved me 4h actually, heh.00:38
Ben64i just got here a couple mins ago, wasn't me00:39
ArcaireNah this was days ago.00:39
Ben64oh then maybe00:39
ArcaireBanging my head against a new laptop.00:39
minimecmunchkin: If you get to the grub default screen, press 'e' once and remove quiet from the default boot line, then press 'F10', or 'ctrl+c'. Would be nice to whether that works. I will test it, when I reboot my machine next time during the weekend.00:39
minimecmunchkin: +know ;)00:39
munchkinWhat about grub customization00:40
minimecmunchkin: If it is working, you can then edit /etc/default/grub, remove the 'quiet', and do a 'sudo update-grub', right...00:41
charlinanybody use R?00:42
ArcaireThe update-grub is what's needed iirc. This happens in a super weird edge-case where your grub doesn't update to the correct kernels.00:43
ArcaireI had it happen while installing the proprietary drivers while *also* having run apt-get upgrade before rebooting.00:43
Arcaire(the upgrade installed a new kernel)00:43
Arcaire#thanksnvidia00:43
troy1Hello transmission daemon does not seem to be utilizing the settings from /var/lib/transmission-daemon/info/settings.json does anyone know where it may be on ubuntu 16.1000:45
AmericanuUbuntu logo loads up several minutes, then stops loading with the same error : initramfs , cant find medium containing a live file. System00:45
ArcaireAmericanu: find another usb00:45
minimecArcaire: I agree that we are again in a 'nvidia fu.. you' situation, but I already love that card... Very fast and very quiet, paired with moderate power consumption...00:46
Americanuhttps://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/na5jytgF/irccloudcapture151508063.jpg00:46
Arcaireminimec: It's more just a situation with how they do their drivers. It's not ideal at all.00:46
AmericanuI really only have 2 usb's 3.0 ....00:46
Arcaireminimec: For that reason, I'm buying an AMD card as soon as the new generation comes out.00:46
AmericanuBoth have the same issue00:46
minimecArcaire: I wasa thinking about AMD, but following the linux benchmarks and features... I chose Nvidia...00:48
Arcaireminimec: Just hang around until the Polaris benchmarks come out. ;)00:49
Arcaireminimec: Then consider that the rumoured price means you can buy two for the price of one Nvidia card.00:49
Arcaire(rumoured price)00:49
ArcaireAlso the AMD guys are actually working with the upstream Linux kernel devs, which is a nice change to see.00:49
OerHeksamdpro-binairy-blob00:50
ArcaireApparently only for now, or something. I'm unsure of the exact specifics but it's looking to lean more towards them working directly and pushing code with/to the Linux kernel devs.00:51
minimecArcaire: I followed the development of AMD, but I wanted a GPU now...00:53
ArcaireSame. I have Nvidia card(s) at the moment. Second half of 2017 is when those wings unfolds. It's just you end up with a lot of hard work and weird edge cases even in Ubuntu.00:54
roothorickAMD has been going through a learning experience lately. Their developers grew up in the proprietary world and don't really understand FOSS00:55
nairwolfhi, I'm trying to learn how to use telnet to sent mail00:55
roothoricksomething they're actively trying to fix, obviously, but there are teething issues00:55
nairwolfbut I only have a gmail account, and it appears to be difficult with gmail because of authentification. Do you know where I could create an account with a simpler smtp server ?00:55
minimecnairwolf: I wouldn't use 'telnet' anymore. Use 'ssh' instead.00:59
roothorickI think he's trying to manually do SMTP which is really bizarre to me00:59
Arcaireminimec: You can't SSH to a SMTP server. :^)00:59
rypervenchenairwolf: I never have problems with gmail when I do it.01:00
Loshkinairwolf: install your own smtp server on a local machine01:01
minimecArcaire: But you can ssh in to a machine and use a console email client to send your email... And that's what he wants to do if I ead him correctly.01:01
nairwolfminimec: what's the difference ?01:02
rypervencheminimec: SSH has nothing to do with what he said01:02
rypervenchenairwolf: What is your goal in doing this?01:02
minimecnairwolf: The key difference between Telnet and SSH is that SSH uses encryption, which means that all data transmitted over a network is secure from eavesdropping.01:02
nairwolfsomeone send me a challenge01:03
nairwolfwrite a python script to send a mail01:03
nairwolfbut firstly, I need to use telnet01:03
nairwolfok, for encryption, but it's not necessary in this case01:03
nairwolfBut, that's okay, my school mail server doesn't cause any problem01:03
wedgienairwolf: the biggest problem you're going to have is that gmail requires ssl. So you won't be able to do it with telnet. You can accomplish it using openssl though01:04
ArcaireTeam I think we're suffering from a combination of the XY problem and bounding way, way too far down the rabbit hole.01:04
nairwolfI've found a big list : https://www.arclab.com/en/kb/email/list-of-smtp-and-pop3-servers-mailserver-list.html01:04
nairwolfyes, that's the problem with gmail ;)01:04
Arcairenairwolf just wants a TLS-free SMTP server, lol.01:05
ArcaireTo which I suggest installing postfix on your local system, and using that: "telnet localhost 25".01:05
nairwolfthis is a solution for gmail : https://stackoverflow.com/questions/11046135/how-to-send-email-using-simple-smtp-commands-via-gmail01:05
nairwolfinstalling postfix isn't too much difficult ?01:05
nairwolfBut thank you Arcaire, I've found a smtp server without tls ;)01:05
Arcaire`apt install postfix && systemctl start postfix` will result in a default setup, IIRC.01:05
nairwolfoh nice ;)01:06
ayyboomeyHey guys, I'm trying to change the memlock in Ubuntu but my computer seems to malfunction if I do so01:06
roothorickthe <odd number>.04 releases tend to be the most, erm, "groundbreaking", don't they?01:06
ArcaireThen if you send a mail to "root@<your system name here>", you can check it worked by typing "sudo mail" or something of the sort to see your mailfuile.01:06
Ben64roothorick: no01:06
lasersaberhello, can someone help me connect to my lan desktop (linux) using remmina?01:06
Arcaireroothorick: Unity 8.01:06
ayyboomey* soft memlock 262144 * hard memlock 26214401:06
nairwolfokay, i'll try that, thankt you Arcaire01:06
ayyboomeytrying to put that in limits.conf01:06
Ben64ayyboomey: why do you want to do that01:07
ayyboomeyA monero miner program I use needs it01:07
roothorickBen64: 13.04, 15.04, 17.04... these are the ones exactly between LTS. Is it the release right after the LTS that's the weird one?01:07
ayyboomeyhttps://github.com/fireice-uk/xmr-stak-cpu/01:07
ayyboomeyThis program01:07
Ben64roothorick: there is no 'weird one'01:07
ayyboomeyIt needs large page support it seems01:08
roothorickBen64: 17.04 is the first I've seen of the expansion of systemd into doing DNS caching/management and the introduction of libinput... I'd call that a big change01:08
ayyboomeyBut if I put that in limits.conf Unity doesn't work correctly.  It asks me if I wanna start up in "low graphics mode"01:08
roothorickbut that may well have been 16.1001:08
Arcaireroothorick: I think that's more a side-effect of the release times of upstream than anything.01:08
wedgieroothorick: what he's trying to tell you is that if you think you've noticed a pattern like that, it is coincidental01:09
roothorickmm. Alright01:09
roothorickwhat's wrong with dnsmasq that systemd-resolved had to be, anyway?01:13
ArcaireOne less thing to install on the system if it's built in, I guess.01:14
roothoricksay what?01:15
Snowiehi all. So i have set myself the challenge of getting Secrety Maryo Chronicles snapped for 16.04. It's been a challenge so far, including building old version 5 of CEGUI(which including fixing some bugs in that code) and finding a bunch of old libraries. I am now at a point where ./configure is completing, so i feel like i'm really close, but i am having an issue with the boost libraries. I (think I) have01:19
Snowieinstalled an older version of boost which should support leaf(), but make for smc is still complaining about it. I did try to pastebinit the entire failed make, but it only outputs the last few lines of the failure, none of the details. how do i, 1) make sure it's using boost 1.3 or 2) set boost to use the deprecated value. Any help appreciated.01:19
crboxLooking to see if anyone is able to help with upgrading issues in 3.2.0-106-virtual #147-Ubuntu, with Apt-get -f install error. http://pastebin.com/cQLgcnZ301:21
roothorickcrbox: that system is either ancient or horribly hosed...01:23

roothorickwell, I'm guessing 12.04?01:24
roothorickold, but still relevant01:24
crboxroothorick: any recommendations... ancient is right.01:25
roothorickdpkg --configure -a # do anything?01:25

minimeccrbox: I would start with 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales'01:28
roothorickoh, good catch01:28
roothorickI don't know if that'd break procps or not, so it's a good starting point01:28
crboxhmm  kernel: [15195396.729407] init: procps main process (117619) terminated with status 25501:34
munchkinWho remembers me asking about Nvidia drivers?01:39
minimecmunchkin: I do... ;)01:40
munchkinlol01:40
munchkinI'm at the end of my rope.01:40
minimecmunchkin: Did you try to boot through recovery mode?01:41
munchkinJust reinstalled the OS, and now I have 2 boot devices, one of them looks like it's frozen when I go into it, and the other doesn't boot01:41
SpeirosWhat other game cards are there other than Nvidia which can be used on Ubuntu, as I'd personally like to boycott their products, as they are so opposed to the project.01:42
munchkinThey are both literally labeled the same thing. This is after I installed Nvidia drivers after the OS installed01:42
Ben64Speiros: graphics cards?01:42
SpeirosBen64 Yeah.  I've not used them for much, but only for sound, and they are a pain for just that alone, let alone what seems to be for others.  I'd rather go to an outlet to purchase, and if they state "Nvidia", then I can inform them why I choose not to have that product, but I'd still want another product.01:43
minimecmunchkin: What do you mean by 'boot device'? You should have something like 'advanced otpions for ubuntu' in the grub menu. In there you would find 3 entries for each available kernel. You should try 'recovery mode' (not the 'upstart' one)01:43
Ben64Speiros: honestly they work the best in linux still01:44
tatertotsmunchkin: hi there, do you want to debug? yes or no01:44
=== atrius_ is now known as atrius
munchkinminimec: Nope. Just says Ubuntu, followed by p1 and the name of my SSD01:44
munchkintatertots: How so?01:45
SpeirosBen64 How come they seem to have the most problems?  Why is it that there is no seeming mention of other cards?  When they are correctly installed, they may work, fair enough, although I don't know, but still, the drama to install them is driving people away, and all for a card, as though the card is the dominating factor in computers.01:45
Ben64Speiros: they don't have the most problems.01:46
SpeirosBen64 I haven't been on here for a long time, but most of the dramas with cards are Nvidia so far01:46

SpeirosBen64 That's the problem.01:55
weiyangHi, I am using Ubuntu 15.10, and after I run "vncserver :1", I could connect to the :1 port, but just display a gray window.01:55
* tatertots has resent his offer to assist the end user in question (munchkin)...so carry on01:55

weiyangI have tried to edit the startup file, but looks not work.01:55
munchkin.....?01:55
Ben64weiyang: 15.10 is no longer supported, you need to upgrade to a supported version01:55
munchkinWhy?01:55
Bashing-ommunchkin: EFI system? then it is the escape key that grub looks for ; spam the escape key as soon as the firnware screen clears ,01:55
munchkinBashing-om: UEFI, yea01:56
weiyangBen64, oh,  could I upgrade without reinstall the system?01:56

munchkintatertots: You resent your offer to help?01:56
munchkinminimec: ok01:57
weiyangLet me take a look.01:57
SpeirosBen64 I don't know how long ago it was, but I removed this one, and updated to the newer one, and had no sound at all.  I couldn't change pulse to alsa or the other way around, as nothing worked.  When I asked about the card, it became a monster undertaking, and I decided I needed to be able to edit my music over the security issues of not being able to upgrade, due to NVIDIA and their incompatibility issues.  If it works in one, then why is it01:57
Speiros not carried over to the next one?  It doesn't work on here, tried and tested.01:57
Ben64Speiros: what does your graphics card have to do with sound01:58
munchkinminimec: Did the same thing. Held it in since the splash screen01:59
SpeirosBen64 The reasons for the sound problem were apparently related to the card.  I don't recall all the details now, but if I ever do an upgrade, I will once again have to go through the process of days and weeks in hoping for a resolution, as I don't know coding etc.01:59
minimecmunchkin: Ok. I have a solution. Can you login as the user you created during installation?01:59
Ben64Speiros: you're not making a ton of sense right now02:00
SpeirosBen64 Reinstalling 16.04 will cause all these wounds to open, and show a can of worms relating to Nvidia and my sound.  If there is another solution, there wasn't when I needed it then, so I'm using what works.02:00
Ben64Speiros: ok then run 14.04, i don't care02:00
SpeirosBen64 True.  I agree.  It still doesn't "fix" anything though, and there is apparently something, as most days I'm here, it seems there are Nvidia issues for someone somewhere.02:01
munchkinUm....what is secure boot?02:01
SpeirosBen64 Hence, I'd like an option to Nvidia.02:01
ttttthishmm02:01
Ben64nvidia is popular, of course some people are going to have problems02:01
Ben64nvidia is still the best choice for linux02:01

munchkinNvidia is a b1tch to use02:02
Ben64not true02:02
SpeirosBen64 Ok, cool.  I'll have a look at that one in the near future, and see what it does.  Of course, ultimately it would be good to resolve the issues, but there are only so many times someone can look at a card issue before going away.02:02
munchkinI never throughout my experience head a simple time with Linux so...02:03
minimecmunchkin: ok. Now type 'sudo nano /etc/default/grub'. It will ask for your password and you will get the content of that 'grub' file.02:03

tomreynramikilany: first of all, what do you currently use that windows server for?11:19
=== ubuntu_ is now known as Bikash
BikashFriends11:20
ramikilanyusing as file server and active directory (users, groups, OU)11:20
EriC^^fishcooker: which log file is that from?11:21
tomreynramikilany: active directory you'd replace by ldap usually, but there's no easy migration for that. also, since you're a hospital you probably can't migrate off windows entirely, or even half - sadly.11:22
ramikilanyso bad11:22
ramikilanywhat about the snap thing?11:23
ramikilanycan it help if i go to virtual?11:23
tomreynramikilany: snap is a package management system, snappy core is a stripped down ubuntu intended for the "internet of thngs", usually computationally limited embedded devices.11:24
ramikilanyah ok so it is not like the xenapp11:25
ubuntu_amberj@27.97.73.8811:25
ramikilanyin your opinion i must forget the migration?11:26
tomreynramikilany: it's not virtualization or a containment solution, no. don't pick a technology, then see how it can be used to solve your problem. instead, first seek an overall migration plan, look into what you'll be able to migrate, and then re-evaluate the plan.11:26
tomreynramikilany: no, i'm not saying this, i'm saying you will need to look in detail at the systems you have and what they depend on.11:27
ramikilanyok so i will check the file sharing if it could be done well by samba and check the LDAP thing11:27
ramikilanyand test them11:28
tomreynthis sounds like a much better approach :)11:28
ramikilanyany online book or videos can help me?11:28
tomreyni don't know any to recommend. i remmebher that the city of munich in germany migrated much of their predominently windows infeastructure to linux, and they wrote down how they did it, and which considerations and compromises they made. it should be available online and for free, probably also available in english, since the free software foundation supported it.11:30

Use a !pastebin to avoid flooding the channel.14:54
k1l_bum: you seem to be on the wrong path with that question. if you want to make a ubuntu installation cd/dvd or usb, you need to "burn" it.14:55
plasticfishbum, you start with an .iso file which is a compressed file, like a zip, and if you copy it to a dvd it will not boot. So you have to burn the dvd, like extracting the .iso file into the dvd, you can achieve this with a dvd writer, it has a special option for .iso14:55

Dave_ElecGuys i have accidentally deleted files with filename containing opencv and i have reinstalled opencv but videos does not display image except vlc. anyone with a fix?15:15
SchrodingersScatbum: if you're trying to get playback on something specific, like a cd or dvd player, then you need to be more specific, but brasero can handle audio too, and then there's tools to author dvd disks15:16
milzaustraliaim following this guide to make a win7 bootable usb cos ubuntu's not recognising cds, and i just formated to ntcs or something, and copied the files over after clean wiping it to all 0's... and the guide is saying to make sure once it's all copied to look for the boot directory file in the root usb folder and make sure it's lowercase and not upercase, im looking at a lot of uppercase files some text and a few folders and am utter15:16

emper0rShishKabab: oh sorry .. so it could be a hardware issue15:22
royal_screwup21SchrodingersScat:  Yeah, probably, the website's going to be stored in the form of files on my hard disk, so yeah15:22
SchrodingersScatbum: yes, I just installed it and it can do this.15:22
ShishKababemper0r: That's what I'm fearing, but recovery mode boots fine.15:22
emper0rShishKabab: in recovery modes can use dmesg and see maybe the problem15:23
SchrodingersScatroyal_screwup21: double check, wget doesn't always follow all links depending on your settings.  youtube-dl is also a handy tool if you're after the videos.15:23
emper0ro/15:23
bumSchrodingersScat: it can do both activity?15:23
ShishKababemper0r: I tried removing quiet and splash from the kernel boot params, but it still shows no messages. If I boot in recovery and nothing goes wrong, maybe the error won't show up- in dmesg?15:24
SchrodingersScatbum: yep, brasero will let you throw random files into an .iso, then you can save that to burn to disks later15:24

royal_screwup21SchrodingersScat: Hmm, but the videos aren't up on youtube, so I don't think youtube-dl will work (will it?).15:24
k1l_Dave_Elec: reinstall those codecs then?15:24
SchrodingersScatroyal_screwup21: beyond having additional extractors for many, many popular sites (try --list-extractors ) it also has a 'generic extractor' where it tries to find generic video and download it from given pages.15:25
Dave_Eleck1l: I have reinstalled codecs including bad but it still doesnt work15:25
bumWhy you installed it now? SchrodingersScat15:26
k1l_Dave_Elec: then look at what error you get. and look at what you actually deleted manually15:26
SchrodingersScatbum: because you were asking a question and I wanted to be accurate in my response.  It's been a while since i've burned a disk so I needed to verify.  It was only 17.something megabytes that I can remove later if I don't use it.  Although I did just get a new system so I have a working burner again, and I need to make some audio cd's for my car.  Do you like those #junglebeats? Mad drums?15:27

SchrodingersScatroyal_screwup21: yeah, for my twitter script I try to wget the content first, and uses an if statement to use youtube-dl depending on the outcome.  if wget "$url" ; then echo "Download of $url worked" ; else youtube-dl "$url" ; fi15:29
royal_screwup21Dave_Elec: the mpv player said that? Damn, huge leap for AI with "guys".15:29

royal_screwup21SchrodingersScat: But while wget-ing, don't you change the parameters to avoid arousing suspicion of the download? I usually change the "--wait" to 20s and "--limit-rate" to about 20K15:33
bumHow to boot my tablet from your Linux?15:33
SchrodingersScatroyal_screwup21: you may be mildly interested in http://archiveteam.org . You can change the useragent that helps look more normal. I think it's -A 'Useragent goes here' but check the manual. Sometimes I add random sleeps to be more human...15:36
SchrodingersScatbum: there's a couple other burners, I think k3b is, but that may be more what kde uses?15:37
SchrodingersScatroyal_screwup21: nope, in wget it's -U, it changes with every software :^) so wget -U 'We can do this the easy way or the hard way.' "$url"15:38
bumSchrodingersScat: why you use iso for music files or video files; simply copy and paste dont work?15:39
SchrodingersScatbum: no, not at all.  I don't use iso for that, but that seemed to be your line of questioning.15:40
SchrodingersScatbum: the only reason that I can personally think that I would need to do that would maybe be if I was passing out promotional disks out for my work and needed to burn hundreds of them, so then I could make an iso of how I want the files and then set it to burn.15:41
ShishKababMy PC hangs during boot also in recovery mode with the last boot message being 'Starting user manager for ID 1126', after it decides to start the graphical interface. What's happening?15:41

EriC^^Americanu: would you mind installing ubuntu on that usb?18:07
Americanuhow can i install ubuntu without a livecd?18:08
CrazyTuxEric: If I have a HDD of 1TB what should be the allocation of space between Ubuntu and Windows 10?18:08
EriC^^Americanu: you can put the .iso on the windows partition, and boot the live usb you have, then in grub boot the .iso that's on windows and install to the live usb18:08
COSL04XI have not installed with mulit-os yes with LTS or newer but should show the option to install "along-side" windows and add Win to the bootload options at power-on18:09
EriC^^CrazyTux: it's totally up to you, a comfy ubuntu install would be 15-20gb without the personal files18:09
Americanuis there a video tutorial for that EriC^^  ? its a bit difficult for me to grip that haha18:09
moongazerEriC^^, how do I do it?18:10
CrazyTuxEric, I need to install some heavy applications both in Ubuntu and Windows.18:11
EriC^^Americanu: not really, but there is a page on how to boot .iso's from grub, all you need to do is press "c" in the live usb's grub and type in the commands18:11
Americanuyeah i will try that18:11

EriC^^CrazyTux: maybe give ubuntu about 600gb if you're always going to be using it and windows 400gb?18:13
CrazyTuxEric, ok.18:15
COSL04Xi would leave some unalocated space between windows and ubuntu to leave room for either to be expanded18:21
CrazyTuxok18:21
EriC^^nah, just make windows larger if you're in doubt, you can always easily access files from ubuntu that are in windows18:22

moongazerMy brain is fried I think18:41
elichai2EriC^^, yes, I thought the user password was the problem after I couldn't login18:41

elichai2EriC^^, but I have the encryption passphrase18:43
elichai2it should work?18:43
elichai2i'll try changing it18:43
EriC^^elichai2: you mean disk encryption(luks) or encrypted home dir?18:43
elichai2luks18:43
elichai2I have a luks partition with lvm that both root and swap are inside18:44
EriC^^.private in your home dir suggests home dir encryption18:44
EriC^^did you choose "encrypt home dir" in the installer?18:44
elichai2I'm pretty sure it was whole disk encryption18:45
EriC^^it can be both18:45
COSL04XEriC^^ is right, you have the op to encrpy home as well with luks too18:46

brunobronoskyis there any reason to use /usr/sbin/service in Ubuntu 16.04?19:42
makovahi costales19:42
brunobronoskyIsn't systemd using /bin/systemctl exclusively?19:42
noc_brunobronosky, backwards compatibility with scripts or sysadmins19:43
brunobronoskynoc_: I don't understand that statement due to ambiguity19:44
brunobronoskyFor example https://docs.mongodb.com/manual/tutorial/install-mongodb-on-ubuntu/ describes use of service instead of systemctl.19:44
Ben64brunobronosky: we can't control what 3rd parties do19:45
ppfit's for script's that still use service do manage services19:46
ppf*to19:46
qayhi, student here with ubuntu. I have a ton of pdfs from a teacher I need to study for a final in 4 weeks. I dont want to print all those pdfs but to study it from my notebook with 16.10 installed. Is there any application to highlight words, or to write a comment fixed to a certain word? note that not all of the pdfs recognize the text as text (mostly is just a scanned image and the text is an image) and ocr-ing the whole thing would ta19:46
brunobronoskyI get no results from: service --status-all | grep mongo19:46
brunobronoskybut I see mongo running with: systemctl --all | grep mongo19:46
ppfwell then?19:46
qayeach pdf file is several pages long, like 20 to 4519:46
mww113qay: I know acrobat pro has text recognition which would make them serchable19:47
brunobronoskyso, to me that doesn't feel like backwards compatibility19:47
ppfgay most pdf viewers can do that19:47
qaymww113: is there nothing on the free software side?19:47
ppfi like okular19:47
Ben64brunobronosky: 3rd party packages aren't supported19:47

COSL04Xqay, you want to find a solid wat to "OCR" the PDFs to make them indexed and serchable19:48
ppfbrunobronosky: you're mixing things up19:48
brunobronoskyBen64 what does "not supported" mean?19:48
ppf1) there's /usr/bin/service in ubuntu to manager legacy upstart scripts19:48
qayCOSL04X: ppf no ocr, I just want to highlight a word on any given pdf file19:48
brunobronoskyppf I know I am. I came here to gain clarity. I'm not bitching or requesting change.19:48
ppf2) there's the mongodb website that has a guide for older ubuntu versions that use upstart19:48
ppf3) there's a systemd service running mongodb19:49
ppfthe three are not related19:49
Ben64brunobronosky: not supported in this channel, how can we control what mongodb does? go ask them what they're doing if you like19:49
ppfBen64: i don't think he's looking for mongodb support19:50
brunobronoskyBen64 I don't want you to support mongodb. I want to understand how to manage services in a post-init-transitioned Ubuntu19:50
ppfthen again19:50
ppfbrunobronosky: what is your exact question19:50
ppfsystemd is the current init system19:50
Ben64but you're asking specifically about a 3rd party package19:50
* brunobronosky is not looking for support of anything but Ubuntu.19:50
qaymww113: i will follow this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/1529/how-can-i-highlight-or-annotate-pdfs19:51
MonkeyDustbrunobronosky  has a 'why' question, not a 'how' question19:51
Ben64like hey i installed this package from blahblah.com, why is it doing X?19:51
Ben64how could we possibly answer that19:51
ppfBen64: he didn't ask that19:51
Ben64basically that was the question19:51
ppfno19:51
brunobronoskyMonkeyDust: yes. I want to know which/why so I can make the right decisions about all N-party packages19:52
ppfbrunobronosky: if you're running something as a service, use systemd19:52
brunobronoskyBen64: allow me to start over...19:52
ppfif it isn't your service, then use whatever they ship19:52
MonkeyDustbrunobronosky  that question is not for this channel19:52
binaryc-119:52
ppfbrunobronosky: that isn't really your decision, is it?19:53
brunobronoskyHey, I think MongoDB's documentation sucks. They can go eat a bag... I'd like to know to Ubuntu way of doing things. help me understand how to recognize out of date instructions.19:53
MonkeyDustbrunobronosky  https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/mongodb-user19:53
Ben64ubuntu's way of doing it is installing it from ubuntu's repository19:53
ppfbrunobronosky: that's easy. try the instructions and if they don't work then you know they're wrong19:54

COSL04XI didn't use ubunutu for a LONG time, after the shady stuff they pulled in the past, when I got this System76 Laptop I left it on, so I could write a review from a out of the box experience for the average consumer who would buy this... COSL04XGuest70635, if you are wanting to del the parent dir and everything under it you can use a remove recursive with force but its very risky if you are not careful21:31
COSL04XHixon, unless your provider allows you to boot a virtual ISO and backup that way to image the virtual disk no, only individual files21:32
HixonNo, my provider just gets ssh login to me21:32
Guest70635COSL04X: okee, will do it one by one21:32
blotekHixon, you can't boot anything over PXE ?21:33
blotekrescue system or something ? - some hosts provide that21:33
ppfblotek: what's the issue with your script?21:33
COSL04XHixon, you cant backup the whole filesystem while its in use, and then do a restore while the filesystem is live, you would have to back it up from a outside source, or just backup the individual files DBs, etc to rebuild if you have to wipe and start over21:33
HixonI see21:34

OTMServiceand I mean read only in any machine you plug it into21:38
ppfthat would require hardware support21:39
COSL04XTo lock a device in read-only, and to make sure the OS follows that rule, it would need to be a burned ROM that you are reading from21:39

michagogoheathenwolfe: unfortunately my personal vps is on 14.04, and I don't have access to the 16.04 box ATM22:20
ppfblotek: yeah, right, missed an escape in the [] :)22:20
blotekppf, it doesn't work whatever i do with it anyway ;)22:23
ppf?22:23
ppfhow do you repeat code usually? wrap it in a function22:23
blotekppf, yes and no ;)22:24
blotekin this scenario it wouldnt work because from this query there's like only 5 attributes i need22:24
blotekthen there are completely different queries to run to get anything else22:24
blotekand ye i will nest it in sort of funcions when i see it working later;)22:25
blotekbut as for the moment dirty way I cant even make that to work22:25
ppfso what is the problem then?22:25
ppfyou keep telling me what you're doing, but not what the problem ist22:25
ppfis*22:25
heathenwolfemichagogo, afaik xenial uses systemd so the upstart error might be from something that lubuntu-desktop expected but isn't there. Can you use the desktop even after the error occured?22:26
blotekppf,22:27
blotekcan I priv ya ?22:27
ppfkeep it in the channel please22:27
ppfso others can chime in22:27
k1l_heathenwolfe: michagogo 16.04 uses systemd. but there are still some upstart wrapings from parts that were made to work with upstart before.22:27
blotekppf, I wanted to send you the whole code but that's not something I want to do in the channel ;)22:28
blotekppf, but anyway enough for me for today22:28
blotekppf, thanks for help anyway ;)22:28
ppfalright22:28
heathenwolfek1l_, michagogo, that might explain it, thanks22:28
ppfyou should create a small testcase that demonstrates your problem22:28
blotekok then ;)22:29
blotekppf,  but not today ;p22:30

posdifference between gnome-shell and ubuntu-desktop-gnome?22:33
michagogok1l_: does systemd adoption depend on the flavor?22:33
michagogoI just checked, and it looks like installing lubuntu-desktop pulled in upstart22:34
jattwhich release22:35
ppf!info ubuntu-desktop-gnome22:35
ubottuPackage ubuntu-desktop-gnome does not exist in yakkety22:35
k1l_michagogo: i dont know exactly what your issue is; but since ubuntu did have upstart while projects(desktops) moved to full systemd already, there were some parts that had to made to work with upstart again. i dont know if those parts were fully moved back to systemd again. that depends on the exact specifics22:35
ppfpos: ^ ?22:35
michagogok1l_: basically, on an Ubuntu server, I installed lubuntu-desktop and xrdp22:36
michagogoWhen I rdp'd in, I got the crash reporter dialog saying there was a system problem, and it looks like it was upstart22:37
michagogoSo the question is, why is that happening and do I need to worry about it22:37
ppfmichagogo: that's a bit vague22:37
ppfif you show us the actual error we might be able to help22:38
michagogoppf: I don't remember exactly, and I don't have access to the system at the moment, but I don't remember there being much detail there22:40
ppfthen there's not much we can tell you.22:41
michagogoWhat's weird is the fact that upstart was pulled in by lubuntu-desktop22:41
ppfit wasn't22:41
k1l_michagogo: uh. that is hard to tell.22:41
COSL04Xmichagogo, I wouldn't worry about it, unless it happens often, I would remove the error out of your crash dir so you dont see the same "previous" error22:41
k1l_michagogo: you can ssh to that system and look at the crash report.22:41
michagogoppf: I think I looked back and the apt-get command installed upstart… I'll try to see if I can get back in and see what happened once I'm back at the office22:43
michagogoI don't have access ATM22:43

kernellotomreyn, ppf, it is the one that shows 'access.your.private.desktop' when its folder is mounted22:53

JurgentjeHi, I'm looking for the command line command to run the default Ubuntu terminal (because it's not launching anymore, and I would just want to type the command in another terminal window to see what error messages I'm getting22:56
k1l_Jurgentje: gnome-terminal22:57
k1l_Jurgentje: i guess you should look out at "ls -al" in your user home folder and look what is owned by root and not your user22:58

eelstrebori have one pc that won't bring up the connection if i configure it to use vpn - my web search says that this is a bug but 2 other computers work just fine - i can't seem to find a solution to this issue - ubuntu 16.04.123:06
COSL04Xdepends on the file type and if it has metadata on where to fetch said subtitles23:06
eelstreborto clarify, the connection won't auto connect when configured with openvpn23:06
COSL04Xeelstrebor, what VPN host and software are you using ?23:07
COSL04Xok23:07
COSL04Xand you set the network profile to load the vpn on connection ?23:07
eelstreboryes23:07
k1l_michagogo: "sudo stat /proc/1/exe" will tell you what init is in use.23:07
adalbertdaxdax89, try Kodi?23:08
COSL04Xdid you configure openvpn yourself ?23:08
eelstreborit auto-connects without being configured to use openvpn23:08
k1l_michagogo: and as i explained before: some parts from upstart are still in use, but that doesnt mean that upstart is the init system in use.23:08
eelstreborCOSL04X, yes, i manually configured openvpn on all my pc's23:09
ploy(or just autoconnect using networkmanager)23:09
COSL04Xeelstrebor, on both client and sevrer side ?23:09
eelstreboropenvpn does come up after manually starting the connection23:10
eelstreborit just won't auto-start23:10
michagogok1l_: ah, I see.23:10
michagogoIt just seems weird that it would cause an error message immediately on login23:10
COSL04Xeelstrebor, ok just trying to fully understand, if wont auto-connect, but if you goto network manager and enable it yourself, the handsake is successful ?23:10
eelstreboryes23:11
k1l_michagogo: that depends on the errormessage :)23:11
COSL04Xhave you restarted the networkmanager service ?23:11
eelstreborno23:12
COSL04Xknow how ?23:12
eelstrebori rebooted and had the same issue23:12
eelstreborCOSL04X, yes, i know how to restart the service23:12
COSL04Xsomething isnt right, there has to be a issue with how the profile has been saved, its not making the right calls, have you checked the profile-file itself23:13
michagogok1l_: honestly, I'm not sure I agree - any error immediately on first install feels like a problem to me23:13

ericusHi! Can anyone help me with how to save multiple monitor settings? They reset upon every reboot or when the screens go idle: https://paste.ubuntu.com/23842502/23:14
COSL04Xeelstrebor, this is odd, I'm not doubting you are having a issue, but I'v persoanlly never heard of this before, check the networkmanager service log, see if its complaining23:15
COSL04Xsee if we cant get some kind of a clue23:15

k1l_michagogo: i dont know if that aws is a standard install at all.23:22
michagogoBut now that I'm trying to make it come up again it's not happening23:22
minimecericus: launch the nvidia settings with sudo rights and do your changes. Save them afterwards. This will create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf. -> 'sudo nvidia-settings'23:22
ericusthanks minimec, I'll try that!23:23
