flexiondotorgMorning desktopers09:20
Laneyahoy davmor2 and flexiondotorg09:25
Laneyare you well?09:25
flexiondotorgYes, very.09:25
flexiondotorgMy daughter and I made our first Raspberry Pi project this weekend :-)09:25
davmor2Laney: I'm awake give me a few more sips of coffee and I can fill you in on everything else from that09:26
* Laney buys davmor2 a teasmade09:29
Laneyflexiondotorg: nice, what was it?09:29
flexiondotorgMy daughter has been learning about Morse code at school.09:30
flexiondotorgSo we've made a morse code emitter.09:30
flexiondotorgYou can choose to use lights, buzzer or both.09:30
flexiondotorgBut being 6 she's full of ideas.09:30
LaneyAwesome09:30
flexiondotorgNext weekend she want to make a morse receiver.09:30
LaneyYou can use a second one to do the other half09:31
flexiondotorgMore trickky09:31
flexiondotorgSo it start a a manual morse, press button, flash light.09:31
flexiondotorgNow you type in a message and it emits it.09:31
LaneyMake it use infra red or something09:31
flexiondotorgI think the light sensor I have should pick up the light pulse for a receiver.09:32
flexiondotorgI've got a CamJam Edu Kits.09:32
flexiondotorgAll in only £18 and you get loads of parts.09:32
willcookeWOW!  I set myself a reminder to check on the system76 patches for the hidpi icons, found the LP bug and..... Laney is already on the case \m/09:39
willcookeThanks Laney!09:39
Laneynp!09:43
willcookeRight.. total disaster this morning.  Only blue milk in the house and it is just wrong in tea, so I need to go to the shop.  Back in 10...09:46
LaneyI'm transitioning to the library too, so also back in a few09:52
willcookeback with the green milk10:06
seb128hey there10:17
seb128(sorry bit late this morning, got a cold and I'm not feeling at the top so I overslept a bit)10:18
seb128cooold out there also, -10°C this night10:18
Laneyhey seb12810:30
Laneyare you ill :(10:31
seb128just a cold but I feel a bit feverish10:31
* Laney hugs seb128 10:33
Laneytake the laptop into bed ^_^10:33
* seb128 hugs Laney back10:33
seb128yeah10:33
seb128hot water bottle on the feet10:34
* Laney came to the library10:35
Laneythis room is cold10:35
Laney13.710:35
seb128urg10:36
LaneyI guess they only turn the heaters on when they get here at 9.3010:37
Laneyand it has crappy ancient windows so probably gets almost to the same temperature as the outside overnight10:37
Laney"hmm, where's firefox gone?"11:45
LaneyJan 23 11:34:30 nightingale kernel: compiz invoked oom-killer: gfp_mask=0x240c0d0(GFP_TEMPORARY|__GFP_COMP|__GFP_ZERO), order=3, oom_score_adj=011:45

davmor2Laney: I'm running a daily live session 16.04.2 and gnome-software is timing out and not opening11:45
Laney:(11:45
willcookedavmor2, can you log a bug and I will speak to Robert about it tonight11:56
davmor2willcooke: sure just looking through the logs to see if I see anything in there11:57
willcookeguessing, but it could be related to a new snapd release11:58
Laneydavmor2: file a bug, look in journalctl for org.gnome.Software and attach that11:58
Laneyor just the whole journal11:58
davmor2Laney: will do thanks dude11:58
LaneyI think that's where it ends up11:59
Laneyand if it's reproducible (save the log first), then you can attach the output of gnome-software --verbose12:01
Laneybut it works here I'm afraid12:01
davmor2Laney: yeap it's working here fine now I wonder if it was just a networking glitch,  I'd do a bunch of test to check12:11
Laneysuspicious12:21
davmor2got it apparently kvm's dns is getting scrambled from time to time so it seemed it had no network so was timing out. I assume it run an apt update on first run and not on subsequent, reboot and try and try again and it works perfectly, I have a connection shown but in ping tests 8.8.8.8 gets a hit google.com doesn't12:41
davmor2wonderbar12:42
davmor2in future I'll double check in browser before I panic12:43

desrtmoin moin13:04
desrthappy monday, everyone13:04
* Laney nods desrt 13:06
* desrt gives a subtle glance of approval in the direction of laney13:06
seb128hey desrt, happy monday to you!13:06
desrtmorning seb!13:07
Laneydesrt: good weekend?13:11
desrtvery13:11
desrtfriday night went to hamilton to see my family and introduce mascha's mom around.  saturday, went to a hockey game with some school friends and generally hung out, sunday took mascha's mom to the airport and had a nice relaxing evening at home playing games13:12
desrtalso learned a lot about pam/sudo/su/runuser/etc. this weekend13:12
desrttrying to separate my work user from my personal-use user13:13
desrt(it sort of bothers me that i type 'git pull; make' in a context where all my personal files are stored)13:13
Laneyinteresting13:15
Laneyyou want to have one way access to another user?13:15
LaneyI sort of wanted to set up dev containers or something, but never bothered to do it properly13:16
LaneyAlways end up wanting to run things in my session sooner or later13:16
desrtya... i want user 'allison' to be able to do anything as 'desrt' without auth13:27
desrti also want to give user 'desrt' out-of-band sudo access13:27
desrtso so far i configured sudo (and only sudo) to accept challenge/response from my yubikey as authentication, with no cached credentials13:28
desrtwhich requires pressing the thing13:28
desrt so i don't have to type passwords into (hostile we presume) desrt-land13:28
desrtthe problem i'm hitting now is that sudo is really shitty about setting up a proper session with logind, systemd --user, xdg_runtime_dir and the proper environment variables and so on13:30
desrtand it turns out that a lot of this comes down to your choice of pam environment.... and sudo has a hacked-up way to let you change your pam "service" name on a per-command basis... so that's good....13:31
desrtbut sudo runs the pam session stuff with the permission of the *invoking* user, so since my normal user can't do stuff like create directories in /run/user, that's trouble13:31
desrtmight end up doing some weird combination like 'sudo -u root runuser -l desrt' or so13:31
desrtbut that gives just one more issue: i want to be able to have a gnome-terminal profile for this, with working "take me to the last cwd" support13:32
desrtand doing login sessions with runuser (and su) always put you in ~ of the target user13:32
desrtso maybe i'll just do a double sudo.  who knows.  *sigh*13:33
desrtbasically, there is no single good "become this other user" tool that has the flexibility to specify custom pam services, or the precise mix of how much of the environment you want to share, and isn't sudo (which is arguably buggy here)13:33
desrtso ya... that was most of my day yesterday =)13:34
jbichaLaney: is it ok if I update gnome-software to 3.22.5 in zesty?13:38
Laneyjbicha: if you like13:39
=== JanC_ is now known as JanC
seb128jbicha, hey, it looks like you reverted the changes from a previous gtk3/zesty upload when you merged the new versions, see bug #157233114:30
ubot5bug 1572331 in GTK+ "GtkPlug scaled to half the expected size on HiDPI screens + zesty debdiff" [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/157233114:30
ksamakTrevinho: hi14:32
ksamakTrevinho: had a chance to look at pull requests on compiz?14:32
ksamaki had another question, about the best way to interogate a running plugin's setting from another one? should it create an opbject for that? or is there a way to get an instance14:34
ksamak?14:34
ksamaki want to call a method inside ezoom, from mousepoll14:34
ksamakhikiko: andyrock if you guys have an idea14:36
andyrocki take a look later14:36
jbichaseb128: thanks, I can upload that change, it looks like mterry forgot to push that change to gtk3 in bzr14:38
seb128could be14:39
mterryoops14:39
mterrySorry14:39
seb128mterry, no worry15:09
seb128jbicha, thanks for fixing it15:09
=== Wellark_ is now known as Wellark
seb128Laney, willcooke, speaking of hidpi icons we should probably try to get https://code.launchpad.net/~willcooke/ubuntu-themes/hidpiicons/+merge/306356 in xenial as well16:40
seb128that was fixed in yakkety but not SRUed iirc16:40
Laneyseb128: Go for it, that's a different package to the other one so doesn't need to be linked16:41
seb128right, I was just mentioning it in case we keep a list16:42
seb128I could work on the SRU but I've no hi-dpi setup to try the changes16:43
LaneyI don't have xenial either, but we could get da_vmor2 to check it16:43
seb128right16:44
Sweet5harkhmmm. The libreoffice-l10n just error'ed out with "No. You make ME a sandwich." at me.16:52
Laneyyou know who the boss is17:00
Sweet5harkaye17:01
Sweet5harkI patched it to not get upset by running builds as uid 0 (as launchpad does).17:02
seb128have a good evening desktopers!18:03

flocculantanyone any idea about when robert ancell shows up?18:20
sarnoldin my /lastlog I see him mostly talking between 12:00 and 19:00 in my timezone; it's currently 10:21 in my timezone18:22
flocculantsarnold: thanks :)18:22
flocculantrobert_ancell: hi there - re the xubuntu locking bug (which also affects lubuntu I've found out) I double checked back on the old lightdm packages and cocked up which I thought worked etc - definitely appears to be this change which caused it (or at least that is the version which lock stops working at) http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/lightdm/lightdm_1.21.1-0ubuntu2/changelog20:14
flocculantwe're obviously a bit concerned about this :)20:14
robert_ancellflocculant, do you have the bug number handy>?20:17
flocculantbug 165639920:18
ubot5bug 1656399 in lightdm (Ubuntu) "Unable to unlock Xubuntu XFCE session after suspend." [Critical,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/165639920:18
robert_ancellflocculant, do you think light-locker hasn't completed all its actions before it's killed?20:19
flocculantrobert_ancell: not sure of the tech side of that at all - I just test, BUT I do know that previously (if music was playing on desktop) lock would mute music when it went to vt820:20
flocculantcurrently I can hear music momentarily as it unlocks - then it stops - which would suggest to me that it is immediately re-locking20:21
flocculantochosi or bluesabre would be better placed to answer whether things are not being completed before it's killed20:22
robert_ancell_flocculant, do you think light-locker hasn't completed all its actions before it's killed?20:22
sarnoldflocculant: robert_ancell_ probably didn't see any your previous three messages20:23
robert_ancell_yeah, had connection problems here (working from a library)20:24
flocculantrobert_ancell: not sure of the tech side of that at all - I just test, BUT I do know that previously (if music was playing on desktop) lock would mute music when it went to vt820:24

flocculantrobert_ancell_: did you see those?20:25
flocculantsarnold: thanks :)20:25
robert_ancell_flocculant, the last I saw was the bug link.20:25
robert_ancell_Yay for IRC :)20:25
flocculantrobert_ancell_: but did you see the ones I reposted?20:25
robert_ancell_flocculant, yep,20:26
flocculantcool20:26
ochosihi robert_ancell_20:28
flocculantochosi: thanks :)20:28
ochosiso basically light-locker is a little unmaintained these days and i haven't touched it in a while20:28
ochosii only have about 5mins now though, would you still be around in 1hr or so?20:29
robert_ancell_ochosi, yep, I've just started20:29
ochosiok cool20:30
ochosithen i'll stop by in ~1hr20:30
ochosibut generally speaking light-locker listens to some unlock signal from lightdm and then the black overlay window that is on top of the session is closed20:30
ochosiit's just been too long for me to remember what we implemented there exactly all those years ago...20:31
robert_ancell_ochosi, I'm thinking it might be lightdm-gtk-greeter being killed is the issue? Because light-locker is in-session and shouldn't be affected by this change.20:31
flocculantrobert_ancell_: I'll wander off now and let ochosi catch you later - sorry I couldn't answer what needed answering, the last thing anyone would want on this is chinese whispers :)20:34
flocculantthanks for looking though :)20:34
dmj_s76Laney: How does the hidpi merge look now?21:03
ochosirobert_ancell_: right, maybe we should test this issue with a different greeter, cause light-locker is not bound to any specific greeter, just lightdm21:07
ochosirobert_ancell_: and yes, light-locker is in-session (sry, haven't looked at the change in question yet)21:08
flocculantrobert_ancell: do you mean seat0-greeter.log?22:08
robert_ancellflocculant, yeah22:08
flocculantadding now - also I tried unity-greeter - but that Failed To Start Session22:08
flocculantrobert_ancell: ok - that's on the bug report now22:09
