aspcaHey guys, trying to put lubuntu on an old Asus 701 I found in my garage. Built a bootable ISO with universal usb installer, inserted usb into 701, booted, hit F2, set priority to removable media, and saved and exited, but it boots into the stock eeeBuntu. Any suggestions?21:18
lynorianaspca, have you ever booted off a usb on it before?21:19
lynorianthis is a netbook with no cd drive?21:19
aspcayep21:23
aspcahave not on this machine21:24
lynorianthis is an old netbook right21:24
lynorianaspca which version of lubuntu21:24
aspcayep21:24
aspcaasus 70121:25
lynorian!md5sum21:25
ubottuTo verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM21:25
lynoriancheck that the image did not do something stupid during download21:25
lynoriansomething stupid may have happend to the download21:26
aspcaDo you have the MD5 checksum for lubuntu-16.10-desktop-i38621:30
aspcaNvm, it matches21:31
aspcaAssuming it's meant to be the last string on this page: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/16.10/release/MD5SUMS21:31
aspcaUSB mounts21:32
aspcaYou know what21:32
aspcaI hit the BIOS21:32
aspcaNot the boot options21:32
lynorianah maybe reboot and try that21:32
aspcaAnd then was able to select the correct one21:32
aspcaGot the lubuntu welcome screen; hitting Install Lubuntu21:33
lynorianI do not think that has much space on it though21:33
aspcaWhat, the 701?21:33
aspcaIt's got 4GB ssd21:33
lynorianyes21:33
lynorianthat is not much now21:33
aspcaYeah, it's just gonna be a word processor and secure email system21:33
lynorianaspca, you may need to be careful removing old kernels21:34
lynorianyeah that takes up almost no space21:34
aspcaWell, the die is cast now21:34
aspcaHaha21:34
aspcaUSB is flashing but menu is not selectable or anything]21:34
lynorianI was going to suggest you could use the sdcard maybe and move /home there if you need more storage21:35
aspcaJust changed to gray screen with terminal line21:35
lynorianas I can get those for around 10 dollars now21:35
aspcaRebooting with Lubuntu welcome screen now21:35
lynorianaspca, how much ram do you have ?21:35
aspcaYeah, I may wind up just getting a fat SD card eventually21:36
aspcaBut this is more an experiment21:36
lynorianI might suggest using alternate as it says it only goes up to 512 MB ram21:36
aspcaI already have an editing desktop, a writing laptop, and a MacBook pro with a cracked screen, so this one is more an aberration21:36
aspcaA novelty21:36
aspcaIs there a better version of Linux that you suggest installing?21:36
lynorianaspca, no the alternate installer for lower ram21:37
aspcaWhich is that? I'm unfamiliar21:37
aspcaThe unsupported 386 one (may be mistaken on that number)21:37
aspcaInstall seems to be going fine21:37
lynorianoh ok21:37
aspcaBut if there's an even lighter-weight version of Linux you recommend I'm all ears21:38
aspcaTried to do puppy Linux but I got overwhelmed by the directories of versions (DOZENS!) and my friend just linked me a clean Lubuntu ISO torrent link w checksum21:38
aspcaSo I opted for the stress-free version21:38
aspcaWell, one hinky thing is that it seems to think my display is larger than it is21:40
aspcaSo it's broadcasting off the screen21:40
aspcaI have about 75% horizontal real estate21:40
lynorianaspca, you mean it does not show the panel on the install?21:41
aspcaNo the panel is there21:41
aspcaBut about 25% of it is off the screen21:41
aspcaAm able to navigate using the keyboard/guesses, though21:41
lynorianaspca, install is done?21:41
lynorianaspca, try pressing alt f2 and run lxrandr21:41
aspcaI right-clicked the menu bar and "Move" so I can drag it around21:42
aspcaProblem not resolved, but worked around21:42
lynorianthat will launch a window to change screen resolution21:43
aspcaOh, cool21:44
aspcaIt's installing now, so I don't wanna interrupt its processes, but I'll do that at the next step21:45
aspcaAlt F2 did not work21:46
aspcaIt's ok tho21:46
aspcaDo I want to encrypt the new Lubuntu installation for security?21:47
lynorianoh during the install21:47
aspca(And also erase disk and install Lubuntu?)21:47
lynorianyeah if you have all the old data off it21:47
aspcaI can't retrieve much old data off it because I don't have any passwords21:48
aspcaAll I could see on there was on the desktop21:48
aspcaBut I may as well take one more check21:48
aspcaWhile we're at it, though, there's no lighter-weight version of Linux you'd recommend instead of lubuntu that's like, instant-on, no frills, but still has an easy to use GUI?21:50
aspcaAnd can run Write! (www.wri.tt)21:50
lynorianaspca, not really21:52
aspcaOK, cool21:52
aspcaI thought puppy Linux might be some crazy, instant-boot, no addon, lightning fast thing I was passing up or something21:52
aspcaGiven that I have 4GBSSD/512Ram/Celeron to work with I wanted to optimize as much as possible21:53
aspcaLmao21:53
aspcaWell, thanks for the help... Ta ta!22:02
thoughtacademyMe again22:11
thoughtacademySo I'm at the install screen of Lubuntu, selecting installation type, but the actual "Install Now" button is greyed out22:11
wxlthoughtacademy: are you on battery power and/or without internet?22:12
thoughtacademy...Yep. :)22:16
thoughtacademyPlugged in, installing now. :D22:16
flybackhow do you setup and select raid 1 during install22:55
flybackit almost looked like it was trying to, since it partitioned both drives identical but I couldn't tell22:56
lynorianflyback that is something I am not sure of are you wanting to use mdraid22:56
flybackI was just going to use the intel bios/soft/fake/blah-blah raid but when I tried to play with that in linux I ran into weird issues22:57
flybackin systemrescuecd22:57
flybackI guess I could try again and see how it goes22:58
lynorianflyback I have no expierence with intel bios raid23:06
lynorianhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Raid reccomends md raid but if you for some reason wanted zfs on lubuntu I would use that23:07
lynorianouch that is really old23:08
flybackhmm23:10
flybackI bet if I boot ubuntu server and setup the raid in there then reboot back23:10
flybacksince the installer in lubuntu seems to be missing any sort of raid option23:11
flybackzfs is *NOT* recommended with ecc memmory23:13
flybackwithout23:13
flybackor can you setup the raid after install?23:14
lynorianI think you can use the ubuntu server install then install lubuntu-desktop23:14
lynorianor use the lubuntu alternate installer23:14
flybackyeah I think this is the easier23:14
flybackI been playing with linux since 97 or so but the mind isn't what it used to be23:15
flybackim in shock I made it to 43 coming in march23:15
flybackdidn't think I would make 4023:15
lynorianI think 16.10 desktop iso has issues with lvm for some reason23:17
flybackdon't think I am going to mess with lvm23:19
flybackI thought about going with 16.10 cause of the eventual move to a new wm23:20
flybackcalled qt-something23:20
flybackbut then I realized I can just apt-get upgrade it when it's finally ready23:20
lynorianyes23:21
flybacki SPENT THE LAST 2 weeks rebuilding two vostro 200's with later model core2duo's, more ram and more disk and video cards that offload youtube23:21
flybackand doing burn in test23:21
flybackwish I could have used core2quads but not these 2 boards23:21
lynorianflyback I get good enough youtube on intel gma 4500 for 1080p23:22
flybackyeah I have a radeon 4650 in there and I put a 2xxx series in my pvr pc23:22
flybackI didn't realize I wasn't useing accel23:22
lynorianbut only just23:22
flybackthe new 2 core2dup's also have sse423:23
flybackwhich will help23:23
flybackI stole the e7500 from a optiplex 760 that I have not finished repairing the psu yet, besides the fact that box can take a quad anyways23:23
flybackhas vt and sse423:23
flybackfor the pvr I put in a e7400 no vt but not neededd23:24
flybacksse4 and better than the old e460023:24
flybackI got another e7500 to use in one of the optiplex 755's once I scrap this optiplex 360 which I am doing soon cause23:24
flybacka) vista support ends in 2 months23:25
flybackb) 4gb max23:25
flybackc) capacitors on this model known to go bad and 4gb limit is not worth trying to solder replace 14 caps23:25
flybackok buring this server iso to do the raid setup23:25
flybackbefore someone chimes in about windows23:26
flybacka) hushmail web login didn't work with linux23:26

MayanXenial Xerus vs Yakkety Yak - which are the differences?23:30
Mayan(I'm brasilliam and not speak english...)23:31
Mayansomeone alive?!23:33
Mayanthere is something wrong here...23:36
flybackI only know english :/23:36
krytarik!lts | Mayan23:37
ubottuMayan: LTS means Long Term Support. Until 12.04 LTS versions of Ubuntu were supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; since 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) LTS versions will be supported for 5 years on the desktop and server. The latest LTS version of Ubuntu is !Xenial (Xenial Xerus 16.04.1)23:37
thewolfstarCan anyone tell me their experience with Lubuntu 16.10?23:43
Mayan16.04 LTS vs 16.10, which are the diferences?23:45
MayanLubuntu?23:45
flybackLTS is more stable long term support23:45
flybackmight not have the latest stuff23:45
flybackbut will have security patches, bug fixes for 5 yrs23:46
xanguaTechnically 3 years with related lxde packages, but kernel and bug fixes in general 5 years23:47
HoNgOuRuHi, I need to configure the sound menu icon at the taskbar so I can run pavucontrol when clicking in "sound settings..."23:48
HoNgOuRuis there an xml or something ?23:48
Mayantime out :(23:49
xanguaHoNgOuRu: you mean the sound indicator?23:49
HoNgOuRuxangua, yes, the little speaker icon...23:49
HoNgOuRuwhen clicked it displays a menu, where the option "sound settings..." appear23:50
HoNgOuRubecause it is not opening anything when I click over "Sound Setings..."23:50
xanguaHoNgOuRu: yeah that always confuses me, in unity it shows the gnome sound menu but in Xfce pavucontrol(?)23:51
HoNgOuRuits lxde I believe...23:51
HoNgOuRu16.1023:51
HoNgOuRuI want to run pavucontrol23:51
HoNgOuRuor anything that let me choose between headphones or speakers... I think I will have to make a script....23:52
HoNgOuRubecause I found no solution to this23:52
xanguaI know, I'm saying you need some specific package... But the regular systray sound icon does what you want HoNgOuRu23:52
HoNgOuRuxangua, It doesn't do anything... how can I debug it ?23:53
HoNgOuRumaybe I'm missing a package23:53
xanguaAs I say, the systray icon, not indicator, does what you want23:54
HoNgOuRulet me see23:54
HoNgOuRuI added the volume control23:55
HoNgOuRuit has no settings option23:55
xanguaRight click23:55
HoNgOuRuI did23:55
HoNgOuRuxangua, you are right23:56
HoNgOuRuit says "volume control configuration..."23:57
HoNgOuRuand then it opens pavucontrol23:57
xanguaIt should show alsa control or, if you installed pulseaudio and pavucontrol, pavucontrol23:57
HoNgOuRuthanks23:57
