[05:11] good day === dldurk_ is now known as dldurk [21:18] Hey guys, trying to put lubuntu on an old Asus 701 I found in my garage. Built a bootable ISO with universal usb installer, inserted usb into 701, booted, hit F2, set priority to removable media, and saved and exited, but it boots into the stock eeeBuntu. Any suggestions? [21:19] aspca, have you ever booted off a usb on it before? [21:19] this is a netbook with no cd drive? [21:23] yep [21:24] have not on this machine [21:24] this is an old netbook right [21:24] aspca which version of lubuntu [21:24] yep [21:25] asus 701 [21:25] !md5sum [21:25] To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM [21:25] check that the image did not do something stupid during download [21:26] something stupid may have happend to the download [21:30] Do you have the MD5 checksum for lubuntu-16.10-desktop-i386 [21:31] Nvm, it matches [21:31] Assuming it's meant to be the last string on this page: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/16.10/release/MD5SUMS [21:32] USB mounts [21:32] You know what [21:32] I hit the BIOS [21:32] Not the boot options [21:32] ah maybe reboot and try that [21:32] And then was able to select the correct one [21:33] Got the lubuntu welcome screen; hitting Install Lubuntu [21:33] I do not think that has much space on it though [21:33] What, the 701? [21:33] It's got 4GB ssd [21:33] yes [21:33] that is not much now [21:33] Yeah, it's just gonna be a word processor and secure email system [21:34] aspca, you may need to be careful removing old kernels [21:34] yeah that takes up almost no space [21:34] Well, the die is cast now [21:34] Haha [21:34] USB is flashing but menu is not selectable or anything] [21:35] I was going to suggest you could use the sdcard maybe and move /home there if you need more storage [21:35] Just changed to gray screen with terminal line [21:35] as I can get those for around 10 dollars now [21:35] Rebooting with Lubuntu welcome screen now [21:35] aspca, how much ram do you have ? [21:36] Yeah, I may wind up just getting a fat SD card eventually [21:36] But this is more an experiment [21:36] I might suggest using alternate as it says it only goes up to 512 MB ram [21:36] I already have an editing desktop, a writing laptop, and a MacBook pro with a cracked screen, so this one is more an aberration [21:36] A novelty [21:36] Is there a better version of Linux that you suggest installing? [21:37] aspca, no the alternate installer for lower ram [21:37] Which is that? I'm unfamiliar [21:37] The unsupported 386 one (may be mistaken on that number) [21:37] Install seems to be going fine [21:37] oh ok [21:38] But if there's an even lighter-weight version of Linux you recommend I'm all ears [21:38] Tried to do puppy Linux but I got overwhelmed by the directories of versions (DOZENS!) and my friend just linked me a clean Lubuntu ISO torrent link w checksum [21:38] So I opted for the stress-free version [21:40] Well, one hinky thing is that it seems to think my display is larger than it is [21:40] So it's broadcasting off the screen [21:40] I have about 75% horizontal real estate [21:41] aspca, you mean it does not show the panel on the install? [21:41] No the panel is there [21:41] But about 25% of it is off the screen [21:41] Am able to navigate using the keyboard/guesses, though [21:41] aspca, install is done? [21:41] aspca, try pressing alt f2 and run lxrandr [21:42] I right-clicked the menu bar and "Move" so I can drag it around [21:42] Problem not resolved, but worked around [21:43] that will launch a window to change screen resolution [21:44] Oh, cool [21:45] It's installing now, so I don't wanna interrupt its processes, but I'll do that at the next step [21:46] Alt F2 did not work [21:46] It's ok tho [21:47] Do I want to encrypt the new Lubuntu installation for security? [21:47] oh during the install [21:47] (And also erase disk and install Lubuntu?) [21:47] yeah if you have all the old data off it [21:48] I can't retrieve much old data off it because I don't have any passwords [21:48] All I could see on there was on the desktop [21:48] But I may as well take one more check [21:50] While we're at it, though, there's no lighter-weight version of Linux you'd recommend instead of lubuntu that's like, instant-on, no frills, but still has an easy to use GUI? [21:50] And can run Write! (www.wri.tt) [21:52] aspca, not really [21:52] OK, cool [21:52] I thought puppy Linux might be some crazy, instant-boot, no addon, lightning fast thing I was passing up or something [21:53] Given that I have 4GBSSD/512Ram/Celeron to work with I wanted to optimize as much as possible [21:53] Lmao [22:02] Well, thanks for the help... Ta ta! [22:11] Me again [22:11] So I'm at the install screen of Lubuntu, selecting installation type, but the actual "Install Now" button is greyed out [22:12] thoughtacademy: are you on battery power and/or without internet? [22:16] ...Yep. :) [22:16] Plugged in, installing now. :D [22:55] how do you setup and select raid 1 during install [22:56] it almost looked like it was trying to, since it partitioned both drives identical but I couldn't tell [22:56] flyback that is something I am not sure of are you wanting to use mdraid [22:57] I was just going to use the intel bios/soft/fake/blah-blah raid but when I tried to play with that in linux I ran into weird issues [22:57] in systemrescuecd [22:58] I guess I could try again and see how it goes [23:06] flyback I have no expierence with intel bios raid [23:07] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Raid reccomends md raid but if you for some reason wanted zfs on lubuntu I would use that [23:08] ouch that is really old [23:10] hmm [23:10] I bet if I boot ubuntu server and setup the raid in there then reboot back [23:11] since the installer in lubuntu seems to be missing any sort of raid option [23:13] zfs is *NOT* recommended with ecc memmory [23:13] without [23:14] or can you setup the raid after install? [23:14] I think you can use the ubuntu server install then install lubuntu-desktop [23:14] or use the lubuntu alternate installer [23:14] yeah I think this is the easier [23:15] I been playing with linux since 97 or so but the mind isn't what it used to be [23:15] im in shock I made it to 43 coming in march [23:15] didn't think I would make 40 [23:17] I think 16.10 desktop iso has issues with lvm for some reason [23:19] don't think I am going to mess with lvm [23:20] I thought about going with 16.10 cause of the eventual move to a new wm [23:20] called qt-something [23:20] but then I realized I can just apt-get upgrade it when it's finally ready [23:21] yes [23:21] i SPENT THE LAST 2 weeks rebuilding two vostro 200's with later model core2duo's, more ram and more disk and video cards that offload youtube [23:21] and doing burn in test [23:21] wish I could have used core2quads but not these 2 boards [23:22] flyback I get good enough youtube on intel gma 4500 for 1080p [23:22] yeah I have a radeon 4650 in there and I put a 2xxx series in my pvr pc [23:22] I didn't realize I wasn't useing accel [23:22] but only just [23:23] the new 2 core2dup's also have sse4 [23:23] which will help [23:23] I stole the e7500 from a optiplex 760 that I have not finished repairing the psu yet, besides the fact that box can take a quad anyways [23:23] has vt and sse4 [23:24] for the pvr I put in a e7400 no vt but not neededd [23:24] sse4 and better than the old e4600 [23:24] I got another e7500 to use in one of the optiplex 755's once I scrap this optiplex 360 which I am doing soon cause [23:25] a) vista support ends in 2 months [23:25] b) 4gb max [23:25] c) capacitors on this model known to go bad and 4gb limit is not worth trying to solder replace 14 caps [23:25] ok buring this server iso to do the raid setup [23:26] before someone chimes in about windows [23:26] a) hushmail web login didn't work with linux [23:26] b) sdr# [23:30] Xenial Xerus vs Yakkety Yak - which are the differences? [23:31] (I'm brasilliam and not speak english...) [23:33] someone alive?! [23:36] there is something wrong here... [23:36] I only know english :/ [23:37] !lts | Mayan [23:37] Mayan: LTS means Long Term Support. Until 12.04 LTS versions of Ubuntu were supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; since 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) LTS versions will be supported for 5 years on the desktop and server. The latest LTS version of Ubuntu is !Xenial (Xenial Xerus 16.04.1) [23:43] Can anyone tell me their experience with Lubuntu 16.10? [23:45] 16.04 LTS vs 16.10, which are the diferences? [23:45] Lubuntu? [23:45] LTS is more stable long term support [23:45] might not have the latest stuff [23:46] but will have security patches, bug fixes for 5 yrs [23:47] Technically 3 years with related lxde packages, but kernel and bug fixes in general 5 years [23:48] Hi, I need to configure the sound menu icon at the taskbar so I can run pavucontrol when clicking in "sound settings..." [23:48] is there an xml or something ? [23:49] time out :( [23:49] HoNgOuRu: you mean the sound indicator? [23:49] xangua, yes, the little speaker icon... [23:50] when clicked it displays a menu, where the option "sound settings..." appear [23:50] because it is not opening anything when I click over "Sound Setings..." [23:51] HoNgOuRu: yeah that always confuses me, in unity it shows the gnome sound menu but in Xfce pavucontrol(?) [23:51] its lxde I believe... [23:51] 16.10 [23:51] I want to run pavucontrol [23:52] or anything that let me choose between headphones or speakers... I think I will have to make a script.... [23:52] because I found no solution to this [23:52] I know, I'm saying you need some specific package... But the regular systray sound icon does what you want HoNgOuRu [23:53] xangua, It doesn't do anything... how can I debug it ? [23:53] maybe I'm missing a package [23:54] As I say, the systray icon, not indicator, does what you want [23:54] let me see [23:55] I added the volume control [23:55] it has no settings option [23:55] Right click [23:55] I did [23:56] xangua, you are right [23:57] it says "volume control configuration..." [23:57] and then it opens pavucontrol [23:57] It should show alsa control or, if you installed pulseaudio and pavucontrol, pavucontrol [23:57] thanks
