But, I'd like to be able to key my way out when/if it happens again. Does anyone know what file to edit in order to enable Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.01:22

saxsaluteHow can I go about fixing that?04:45
cipher6What's the difference in #cat > foo.txt and #cat >> foo.txt?04:45
saxsalute> replaces, >> appends04:45
saxsalute> will dump out the whole file and make a new one, append will just make new lines at the end of the existing ones04:46
guardian_Hey, I have been desperately asking or a solution for the issue with shutdown/hibernate issue with ubuntu 16.10 on my acer laptop es1 533. Someone please help.04:46
saxsalutepavlos: how can I go about fixing that netmask?04:46
saxsalutepavlos: linux networking is not my strong suit04:47
cipher6saxsalute: so > would over write the contents of my file w/o prompting?04:47
saxsalutecipher6: yes04:47
cipher6saxsalute: but >> would just insert a carriage return, and place the next line,04:47
saxsalutecipher6: yep04:47
cipher6And it just assumes you want to replace?04:47
saxsalutecipher6: yep. linux isn't known for asking if you're sure before you destroy something.04:47
cipher6Is there anyway to keep me from accidentally over writing a file I don't mean to? (Besides permissions)04:48
cipher6yeah rm -r / and all04:48
pavlossaxsalute, these come from the DHCP ... have you changed any of the /etc/dhcp/ files04:48
saxsalutepavlos: I have not04:48
saxsalutepavlos: it was working last night and I haven't changed any DHCP files since then04:49
saxsalutepavlos: or ever, as far as I know04:49
pavlosso what if you disconnect/reconnect the wired cable?04:50
xrandrim just gonna re-install04:51
pavlosif line 5 was not there, the route -n looks ok04:51
xrandronly had ubuntu for 1.5 days, not much was done. Clean 16.10 install is probably better04:51
saxsalutepavlos: Ubuntu will acknowledge the disconnect and will state that it has connected to ethernet 1 upon reconnection, but the Internet access remains down04:51
pavlossaxsalute, and when you click, Connection information it should show the netmask as 255.255.255.004:52
=== aaron is now known as Guest4613
saxsalutepavlos: 255.255.254.0 but I presume it is just an oddity of the university network04:54
saxsaluteTo have a slightly larger subnet04:54
pavlossaxsalute, that's a good mask, /23 instead of /2404:54
saxsaluteyep04:55
pavlossaxsalute, cannot think of something else to try, anyone else has suggestions? I look at my network to compare ...04:55
saxsaluteI spent a few hours googling and trying stuff but tended to find the opposite problem: full network access but no dhcp04:56
saxsaluteWhereas I have limited access but full dns04:56

cipher6saxsalute: if I were to ask what << did, how would you ELI5?04:57
saxsalute<< or >> ?04:57
cipher6<<04:57
cipher6In the cmd #cat > foobar.txt << EOF04:57
cipher6what is the << doing ? I know that EOF is a variable keyword to tell cat to stop04:57
saxsaluteI've never used it before, but it appears to identify a breakpoint in the document04:58

al2o3-crcipher6: python <<<'print("boo!")'05:01

pavlossaxsalute, seems you're going thru 2 gateways, your ip is 204.something -> 204.1 -> 76.11 -> outside05:01
al2o3-cr*off05:01
saxsalutepavlos: how may that relate to the problem? networking is sometimes a bit lost on me05:02
pavlossaxsalute, thinking out loud05:03
saxsalutepavlos: aah05:03
pavlossaxsalute, you local ip is in the 204.someting, right?05:03

saxsaluteOh sorry, no05:04
saxsaluteAccording to connection information, my IP address is 129.2.204.24205:05

saxsalutepavlos: yeah sorry I misremembered, my IP is in the correct submit05:05

saxsaluteIt does not, but even from the computer I am currently on it does not respond to pings05:13
al2o3-crgetting a 169.254.*.* means your computer can't reach the dhcp server (for whatever reason i'm unsure)05:14
saxsalutethe URL does resolve to an IP, but it does not respond to ping05:14
pavlossaxsalute, can you edit /etc/resolv.conf and add before the search umd.edu line, search 129.2.204.105:15

pavlossaxsalute, cant think of something else, sorry05:21
pavlossaxsalute, that mask with all 255's is strange05:22
saxsaluteSomebody else mentioned that the last line of the routing output implies I cant reach the dhcp server05:23
saxsaluteIs it possible that it cant reach the dhcp server and for some reason is stuck with a stale IP?05:23

gambl0reoh wow...its actually running a lot better now10:22

akikrejns: you can control it with GRUB_GFXMODE and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX in /etc/default/grub10:25
alkisgrichardb: this is a file. I'm asking for the steps you did to create the bootable hdd. Something like this: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows10:25

mivael_k1l, refeaime: Well... I do things in a terminal window, then I run a long-running program there.  Then I switch to other tasks. I want to be notified that the long-running process is finished in my terminal window.  Now I can use notify-send for this.  But the issue with notify-send is that I can easily miss the notification message (it appears for several seconds and disappears then).  I need such a notification as I have with Thunderbird, for example: I12:52
mivael_ never miss a new email due to persistent indication.  I want something like that.12:52

mivael_k1l, you are right.  I tried large values, but it seems I never tried it with -t 0: it displays a dialog window with ok/cancel instead of notification in this case.  It's okay for a workaround but it's not reliable/convenient enough.  I would prefer "Messagin Menu"-like way of notifications.  Is it a way to achieve that?13:06

dumle29noc_: Okay, I think I know where the problems occour. The program needs sudo14:17
noc_dumle29, if the GUI is designed to run sudo that's bad design. If it isn't designed, then prefer pkexec (or gksudo/kdesudo depending on your desktop environment) as sudo is known to give problems with GUI programs14:21

dumle29so yea, designed to run sudo. :/14:22
mivael_ioria, If I understood you right (regarding bubble notification), you propose to use an alternative way of notification, while using indicator-messages just for launching an alternative notification application (which is itself not integrated with indicator-messages).  indicator-messages seems to be unnecessary in this scenario.14:23
mivael_ioria, Thank you for the links!  I will probably fall back to this approach if I do not find one which re-use existing applications.14:25

newdanI had to Ctrl+Alt+F3 and login to see it was taking up 100% CPU17:31

MrOpenSourcepavlos: thanks I take a look17:46
TBotNiktomreyn: I'm a devloper! Magento requires 5.7. There is no stable release of Ubuntu/Kubuntu LTS til April this year of an LTS (never stable until 18 months after initial release.) so can not upgrade to 16.04 LTS17:48
TBotNiktomreyn: I'm a devloper! Magento requires 5.7. There is no stable release of Ubuntu/Kubuntu LTS f(never stable until 18 months after initial release.) so can not upgrade to 16.04 LTS till Oct 2017 when it becomes stable!17:49
TBotNiktomreyn: I only run fully stable versions of LTS17:50
nacc... so instead you run an unsupported version of MySQL17:50
TBotNiknacc: MySQL says it's fully supported, but finding the dpkg config/call is in error, so therein lies my issue17:51
naccTBotNik: if MySQL says it is supported on 14.04, then they are supporting it, not ubuntu ...17:52
TBotNiknacc: Also unbuntu/kubuntu says it's supported in the 16.04 release, but they are still using the same dpkg file, so again 16.04 is not yet stable.  These are the kinds of bugs that have to be fixed before a version/release can be declared stable.17:53
TBotNiknacc: Yes and the "wget" for dpkg is on their site.  So if a bug is opened will have to be against their dpkg config file!17:55
newdanCan anyone else using Gnome and Chromium on 16.04 reproduce this bug? When I use the dev tools in Chromium and drag an element in the Elements pane, just the act of trying to grab and drag it quickly causes app focus to change, then either Gnome shell auto-restarts or I get logged out entirely17:56
mahmoudgebril9 11 attacks, Did USA do it itself or it just let it happen?17:57
naccTBotNik: are you claiming that wherever you got the .deb (not 'dpkg file') for mysql 5.7 from is the same .deb that Ubuntu ships for 16.04? In 16.04, you don't use an external .deb, MySQL 5.7 is provided by Ubuntu.17:57

agileadamI'll guess closer to 12. hehe22:33
agileadamThanks!22:33
tioxIt's best to figure these things out with scripts so you can run a single script that calls upon your smaller config scripts.22:35
tioxAfter you run a single script, pipe the output to a log for later reading and see what went wrong so you can resolve it.22:36
tioxRather, the single script which calls upon others.22:36
