glitchdthx bazhang01:08
glitchdi have a question regarding the lock screen in 16.04.101:09
schultzameximelt: that sounds more like a virtualbox question than an ubuntu question, btw. but you have two options in vbox, essentially change networking modes (NAT -> Bridged) or port forward the port you need to.01:09
glitchdwhy would crtl+alt+L activate a different lock screen than clicking lock from the power menu?01:10
glitchdwhen that key combo is suppose to be a shortcut to the menu item lock01:10
meximeltokay, I set it to bridged, I can access the server but inside ubuntu on vb I can't access the internet01:10
glitchdmeximelt, i would set the adapter to nat instead of bridged, works for me everytime01:11
wedgieglitchd: in which DE? In unity, for me ctrl+alt+l, windows+l, and the menu all do the same thing01:11
glitchdwedgie, im using ubuntu 16.04.1, with xubuntu-desktop installed.01:12

=== miczac is now known as miczac\away
glitchdwedgie, and if i press the key combo for lock, it uses xscreensaver(which i want), but if i use the menu item lock from the power menu it activates lightlocker screen lock01:13
k1lglitchd: could be its a different instance fetching the shortcut. xubuntu uses a different lockscreen than lightdm and unity do, iirc.01:13
wedgiemeximelt: if you changed to bridged you'll likely have to change the network configuration of th guest01:13
k1llockscreen and screensaver that is.01:13
wedgiemeximelt: because it will no longer be on whatever the NAT network was. So it'll need a new IP and default gateway01:13
glitchdk1l, i even tried to remove and purge lightlocker but it still persists01:13
k1lglitchd: did you reboot since that remove?01:14
erm3ndareally?01:14
glitchdk1l, its just super weird because the menu item has the key combo next to it, and if i use the key combo it works how i want, but not if i use the menu item. and yes i have rebooted since and it was still the same01:14
meximeltwedgie: thanks, I'll look into that.01:15

Roshan@hateball  I am trying to install sdk using composer10:19

k1lRoshan: so you mean disk space and not memory?10:20
Roshanhateball, I am getting this error "PHP Fatal error:  Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 104 bytes) in /usr/local/bin/composer on line 23"10:20
gardonyou simply press F2, right? To get to that blue screen and then you'll be able to arrange the usb, ang so on.10:21

gardonIt says F2 for setup and then F12 to choose which drive.10:21
gardonI'll try again.10:22
hateballRoshan: I'm not really familiar with that, but usually php.ini has memory settings10:22

gardonhope this isnt a big file because u know, im from the philippines *cries in third world*11:23

gardonoh wow that helps hateball11:24
gardonbecause i just chose 2 :D11:24
gardonI cancelled it, thanks.11:24

ducassepabloab: kernel - unlikely, x server - more likely. can't tell you more than that.15:27
naccjoinrer: there is some overlap, as if a pacakge is installed, `dpkg -L` and `apt-file list` will both work.15:27

ash_workznacc: oh, no I mean, I figured out what the problem was that caused ^ that problem16:13
ash_workznacc: ie: I figured out what the *cause* was16:14
naccash_workz: oh what was it?16:14
ash_workznacc: the postgresql.conf being used is not in the right location16:14
naccash_workz: ah16:14
ash_workznacc: I was having problems, woes in fact; with getting postgres up using these faster drives16:15
naccash_workz: was that .conf done manually then?16:15
ash_workznacc: there were manual changes to it; I just assumed that `mv postgresql.conf{,.bak}` `cp /old/postgresql.conf /path/to/postgresql.conf` was going to work just fine16:17
ash_workznacc: I was later told that I should have used pg_createcluster16:17
naccash_workz: ah ok16:17
naccash_workz: so it was working, you just has a misconfigure postgres?16:17
naccash_workz: and for some reason, one command checks it and one doesn't?16:17
ash_workznacc: I don't quite get it, but in essence, the wrapper was looking for a default data directory where a db had not been initialized; so the  wrapper failed.16:19
ash_workznacc: but the absolute path by passes the wrapper16:19
naccash_workz: right, so it was a red herring, it sounds like16:20

adrian_1908hello. I have a script that stars with `#!/path/command -f`. Does this mean that the lines following it are executed with the command and its argument? Because there are commands that I know wouldn't work with the -f flag, if I invoked them manually.16:39

ducasseit means that if the script is executed directly, 'command -f' will be called as the interpreter16:43

ldshamnix, I think you have to look on power saving features.16:48
tmerrHello. I understand that udev's default rules go to /lib/udev/rules.d, and user made rules should go to /etc/udev/rules.d. If I am making a package that needs to make a udev rule, which of those should I put it in?16:49
amnixldsh: power saving features?16:49
ldshamnix, I already experiences a difference in the wifi's efficiency when the power saving feature was at the maximum.16:50
ducasseadrian_1908: when you execute './name-of-script', the shell will run 'command -f name-of-script'16:50
adrian_1908ducasse: ok, thanks for confirming. I misunderstood how it works then.16:50
ducassejoinrer: but it works for me, yes. i use urxvt myself, although usually not with terminus.16:50
ldshamnix, yes, you can say that you want the wifi power to be smaller when on battery for instance, this may be nice in some cases, but not always.16:50
amnixldsh: I'm using the default settings. I just clean installed ubuntu. Shouldn't something as basic as wifi work out of the box?16:51
ldshamnix, My way to manage the power saving feature where through tlp, but there are probably other ways.16:51
ducasseamnix: which chipset have you got? not all drivers are equally good.16:51
ldshamnix, This is just a guess based on my personal experience. This could also be that the hardware is quite new and the manufacturer of the chip not very open platforms friendly, thus the driver not yet optimal.16:52
amnixducasse: how can I download the proper drivers16:55
ducasseamnix: if you answer the question, we can find out.16:56
amnixducasse: I'm not sure. How do I find out?16:56

nacccountingdaisies: you started mid-thought, it feels like17:49
nacccountingdaisies: or assumed we had way more context than we do.17:49
ikonianicomachus: for your cross compile, I'd say not to install the arm package, you'll probably need to "build" an arm toolchain, this maybe possible using the arm packages, but I'd be worried that they would overwrite some of the x86 versions if they co-exist17:50
nicomachusikonia: I *think* I do have an arm toolchain. but it's trying to pull the x86_64 package to put into that chain and is failing.17:51
nicomachushere's the error: https://paste.ubuntu.com/23961400/17:51
ikonialets have a look17:51
ikonianicomachus: so I can only guess (as I don't know your setup fully) that your linker/compiler library path is looking in the x86 path before the place you have the arm library, you'll probably need to pass that as a compiler option, as the command I see in your pastebin, won't be aware of the stuff you have in your home directory by default17:53
countingdaisiesikonia: nacc: Sorry, I'm not sure where to begin bc my problem is large (to me). nicomachusikonia: ok. let me try just purging the x86 package... maybe that'll help.17:54
ikonianicomachus: I'm not sure it will, as it still won't be aware of your home directory stuff (I"m assuming thats where you've built your arm toolchain)17:54
nacccountingdaisies: iirc from other comments by you, are you using php7 or php5?17:54
ikoniathe default path for the linker/compiler will not contain your home directory, unless you are setting that somewhere else (eg: the makefile)17:55

countingdaisiesikonia:  ty so very much17:58
nicomachusikonia: what do you mean?17:58
ikonianicomachus: where on your file system is the actual arm library it "should" reference17:58
ikoniacountingdaisies: no problem, if you have specific questions, just ask17:58
nicomachusikonia: home/17:58
ikonianicomachus: where in /home exactly17:59
ferrnandai know what this channel is for ikonia17:59
ikonianicomachus: eg: what would you "ls -la" to see the libary17:59
ikoniaferrnanda: great,17:59
nicomachushome/librespot/ , I think17:59
ikonianicomachus: what's the name of the library (full name)17:59
ikonianicomachus: (sorry I don't know this app so I can't reference it against your system setup off the top of my head)17:59
nicomachusI'm sorry, idk what you mean by library. what library? I have only installed the C cross toolchain, then installed the cross compiled standard crates with rustup, and cloned the git repo.18:00
ikonianicomachus: run find /home -name libportaudio.so -print18:01
ikonianicomachus: jsut worked it out from your debug18:01
nicomachuschecking18:02
nicomachusno output18:02
ikonianicomachus: ok, so thats part of the problem then18:02
nicomachuswell I purged the x86 version already.18:02
ikonianicomachus: it's trying to find the arm version of that library, it can't so it finds the x86 version...18:02
ikonianicomachus: so you need the "arm" version of that library and that needs to be in the linker path18:02
nicomachusok. portaudio19-dev is a dependency that has to be installed before the git repo package can be compiled, so I guess I need to install an arm version manually somehow. which gets me back to the original question of "how?"18:03
ikonianicomachus: the other possibility is that this library could be being built as part of the build script as a dependency, not completing so therefore is missing18:03
ikonianicomachus: right, so that goes back to the original statement of either a.) building the toolchain you need, b.) trying to use the arm package, but accepting /understanding the risk this may conflict with the x86 package, and you'd need to very carefully manage the package manager18:04
nicomachusikonia: AFAIK the toolchain is built. that was done via rustup. I don't need the portaudio package on this machine that I'm compiling with (it uses pulseaudio), so I'm not too worried about conflict there.18:05
zerousikonia: I installed nvidia-367 and I couldn't start x. It gave me a black screen. dmesg log : termbin.com/3kbr18:06
ikonianicomachus: the toolchain should contain all the deps you need (thats what the toolchain is, a mini system to be used to build)18:06
ikoniazerous: so you can see the gnome desktop segfaulting there, look at the Xorg log18:07
nicomachusikonia: ok. I ran the compile command again after removing the x86 version of portaudio and it looks like it may be a toolchain issue, after all. It's trying to pull another x86 package and failing to build. full output this time, with command and error: https://paste.ubuntu.com/23961914/18:09
ikonianicomachus: I don't think your toolchain is complete to be honest,18:10
ikonianicomachus: I think you've got the basic compiler / linker there, but none of the stuff you need18:10
nicomachusyep, looks like it.18:11
ikonianicomachus: (keep in mind, I'm assuming, I don't know your setup)18:11
vgoodguyhi everyone18:11
ikonianicomachus: I've just had a quick look at that shell script that installs the toolchain, being honest, it's not very good and far from "complete" or a solution18:11
vgoodguyI had a question about ubuntu.18:12
nicomachusikonia: this is very low-quality stuff, tbh. haha. librespot itself is very much in its infancy. and uses some... questionable methods for linking to Spotify.18:12
ikonianicomachus: that toolchain setup......not good18:12
vgoodguyWindows 10 takes remarkably lesser time to boot to desktop, why can't ubuntu do the same?18:12
ikoniavgoodguy: you've probably got a service blocking/delaying the progress18:13
ikoniavgoodguy: eg: dhcp takes a long time to respond18:13
EriC^^vgoodguy: windows uses a cheat to boot, it pretends to shutdown when it actually just hibernates18:13
EriC^^vgoodguy: if you restart windows, you'll see it's real boot time18:13
vgoodguyEriC^^, yup. I have noticed that. Restart takes like forever.18:14
ikonianicomachus: maybe fun/interesting to try to offer them a better solution18:14
nicomachusikonia: I just want my rpi3 to show up as a connected device on spotify....18:15
vgoodguyEriC^^, ^ Do such cheats exist for ubuntu? (maybe in some distro, if not the actual thing)18:15
nicomachusvgoodguy: you could just suspend instead of shutting down.18:15
EriC^^vgoodguy: just hibernate instead of shutting down18:15
vgoodguynicomachus, suspend drains battery over time, hibernate really seems a nice option.18:16
ldshBluesKaj, Hi, The changes we made some days ago did not seemed to help to get sound at each boot. I had 3 days without sound, but it's back today (and I did only boot in Linux, no reboot in windows since long, but in Windows is always with sound)18:20

ldshBluesKaj, The sound card has numeric and analogic output. If I plug hdmi, I usually have sound without any problem, same with the jacks at the back. My issue is with the optical numeric output (I don't really use the others).18:26
BluesKajldsh:  your hdmi connection also carries the audio from your audio chip to your tv/monitor or to whatever device the hdmi is connected18:26
ldshBluesKaj, yes, exactly18:27
ldshBluesKaj, And I believe these outputs are also numeric (as opposed to the one of the jacks). Thus the sound card seems to work correctly on some outputs (that I however rarely use), but randomly on the optical one.18:28
BluesKajldsh: maybe your optical connection/cable output or connected device input is faulty, hence the intermittent problem18:29
=== Vampire0_ is now known as Vampire0

ubuntu666I unzipped the tar for GTK + source I have gtk+-2.24.0 when I go in the folder from termianl and do ./configure it works then i type make and then get this 'Makefile:2055: recipe for target 'updateiconcache.o' failed'22:04

elitechurroHey, I am trying to get my sd card to show up. It is a microsd card with adapter. It did work. Then I unmounted it and used dd to install an image onto it. I ran sync and then removed it22:16

ppfZew: do you have avahi in the mix somewhere?22:19
Zewno I think... I'm about to find out right away22:19

ubottudorkmafia: The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). dorkmafiait's a 4gb stick22:35
k1l_elitechurro: dont know :/22:37
elitechurroThanks anyway k1l_22:37
tomreyndorkmafia: the stick doesn't need to contain a file system, this should be created at the time the install media is created.22:37
dorkmafiabut I like to reformat the stick/erase it22:38
dorkmafiabefore I create the image22:38
dorkmafiaon there22:38
tomreyndorkmafia: you can repartition is, and zero the first mb22:39

tomreynthen optionally write a new partition table22:40
dorkmafiaI'm just using disk utility on a mac. there is a scheme: guid partition map/master boot recrod22:40
dorkmafiaand then there is MS-DOS fat/osx journaled etc22:40
tomreyndo you do efi or legacy bios booting?22:41
Zewohhh this config fiile is read-only?22:41
tomreyndefault is legacy bios accoring to the page i linked you to earlier22:41
Homely_GirlHi, can anyone explain to me how to change my root password please?22:42
Zewnm forogto sudo22:42
tomreyndorkmafia: if legacy bios, msdos fat is probably your best choice for formatting; if you do efi booting, you may want / need to use guid partition map22:42
dorkmafiaic22:43
tgm4883!root | Homely_Girl22:43
ubottuHomely_Girl: Do not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo22:43
dorkmafiai think I need to use efi22:43
k1l_Homely_Girl: you dont have a root password, the password for sudo is the same as the user has22:43

Homely_Girltomreyn, it's hard to tell really, I don't do much sudo stuff! I went into user acc's 'n my account is set as admin....22:46
Homely_Girlk1l_, no, I think it's my old password from b4 the upgrade22:47
k1l_Homely_Girl: ok, the user marked as "admin" can use sudo. and the sudo password is the same as the user one.22:47
k1l_Homely_Girl: the passwords dont change22:47
k1l_Homely_Girl: what is the issue then? did you change the password yourself?22:47
Homely_Girlk1l_, when he updated he created my user account, with password #222:48
WeiJunLiin general file permission should be 600 and dirs 700 right?22:48
wedgieWeiJunLi: depends.22:48
wedgieWeiJunLi: but that's a reasonable place to start22:49
k1l_Homely_Girl: upgrading doesnt need to change users or passwords.22:49
WeiJunLiwedgie: i want it to be accessible im working with qemu vm so it has to access authorized_keys from ssh22:49
wedgieWeiJunLi: for .ssh/ and authorized_keys that is indeed what you want22:50
Homely_Girlk1l_, I'm just puzzled as to why I have 2 active passwords22:50
k1l_Homely_Girl: ubuntu doesnt have an activated root account as standard. you just have user accounts and the admin accounts are allowed to use sudo. the all only use one password22:50
Homely_Girlk1l_, old one is called 4 when installing software, so I guessed it must be root, but wot do I know!22:50
WeiJunLiwedgie: alright thnks22:51
k1l_Homely_Girl: how do you think you got a new password?22:51
k1l_Homely_Girl: btw: i am talking from the standard ubuntu setup. if there is another person managing your system you might want to ask that person for details. we cant know what they changed22:52
Homely_Girlk1l_, I'm nor sure, the guy who upgraded my system is not Ubuntu friendly22:52
Bashing-omHomely_Girl: decrtpyion password ??22:52
Homely_GirlBashing-om, I know both passwords.22:52
k1l_Homely_Girl: uh, if its a "i am a cool linux guy" guy, then mabey he broke the standard ubuntu setup.22:53
k1l_Homely_Girl: where are you asked for the new password?22:53
Homely_Girlk1l_, He's a Linux systems analyst 'n said he could help me 'cos I was getting errors when trying to upgrade to latest22:54
Homely_Girlk1l_, So he eventually wrote a disc 'n installed the new version that way on top of my old vers22:54
Homely_Girlk1l_, Really wish I'd done it myself now, 1st password is a bugger to type out 'n I want to use the 2nd one universally22:55
k1l_Homely_Girl: i still dont know what you need to type 2 different passwords to.22:56
k1l_Homely_Girl: usually there is only one password used. and it sounds like he made  an install and reused you users home partition? did he encrypt it?22:56
Homely_Girlk1l_, No clue, can I find out without involving him? :)22:59
Homely_Girlk1l_, I should become an Ubuntu analyst 'n kick his but!!22:59
Damnit__wonders if a bash script can be made for this ....23:01
Homely_Girlk1l_, I just did a sudo-apt get install of somming 'n it accepted password 223:03
katistois samba encrypted file sharing?23:03
Homely_GirlBut if I go into software centre it wants #123:03
Homely_Girlk1l_, except it just accepted #1!! I'm confused23:04
rwinkatisto, samba is a way to allow linux and windows machines to share disk contents over the network.  the shares can be encrypted if I recall correctly.23:06
Homely_Girlk1l_, Don't worry about it, I'll soldier on with 2 'n make a note of when #1 is called 4.23:06
