I had to clear out ~/.config and ~/.cache to fix plasmashell last night and now my audio device isn't showing except when I run aplay -l [06:58] only my hdmi audio device is showing in pulseaudio [07:00] Trioxin: does it behave properly in a new/guest session? [07:02] ill check [07:07] hateball, no [07:08] Trioxin: So it's not related to your user settings then [07:08] i guess. just happened right after that [07:08] Trioxin: Did you do any other changes? Like upgrade kernel or something [07:08] no [07:09] i installed erlang. that was all [07:09] which I've removed [07:09] it shows in all the cli commands I can find [07:10] Trioxin: where is it not showing then? In the sound kcm ? [07:10] or in the volume applet? [07:10] any volume app [07:11] no sound playing [07:11] it shows in alsamixer. just no pulseaudio [07:11] right, but in the sound kcm, can you see it there? [07:11] kcm? [07:11] press alt+f2, search for sound [07:12] lemme find the correct one [07:12] k [07:12] sound just brings up Audio Volume - System Settings Module [07:12] Trioxin: /usr/bin/kcmshell5 kcm_phonon [07:14] i see where it used to be but it's grayed out [07:14] http://storage6.static.itmages.com/i/17/0210/h_1486710875_1347073_2b7c0198f5.png [07:15] Trioxin: did you wipe all of ~/.config ? [07:15] yeah but I brought most back [07:15] just wasn't sure what was crashing plasmashell [07:16] Trioxin: usually a plasmoid gone wrong [07:16] wiping config is a bit... heavy handed [07:16] Trioxin: do you have pavucontrol installed? [07:16] well, it happened as the result of starting a new session of the same user in parallel [07:17] which in itself was an accident. i immediately logged out [07:17] then each time I typed anything into search it crashed plasma [07:17] yes i have it [07:17] doesn't show in there [07:18] Trioxin: and you're unable to select your device there as well? [07:18] hmmm [07:18] i have a backup of the old config [07:19] well unless there's some system-wide messup, all you should need to do to reset pulse is "rm -r ~/.config/pulse; pulseaudio -k" [07:20] but one can also modify things in /etc/pulse/ and then who knows [07:21] only thing I've done as root since audio was working was to install plasma-workspace [07:22] reinstall pulse? [07:25] aplay works [07:28] brb === dyson is now known as Trioxin [07:40] hateball, what's going on is weird. ever since I cleared ~/.config, things have been not starting up in the same order and some things aren't being killed when I log out that once were. I have to kill openvpn each time I log out and back in now where I didn't before. The problem with audio was that a while ago I installed the randomsound package. After clearing .config it was starting up before pulseaudio and grabbing the sound card. removing randomsound [07:40] fixed it. Sucks because randomsound is great for adding entropy to /random [07:41] maybe I can just reinstall it [07:49] Trioxin: any reason you're not using urandom ? [07:50] I suppose if you are paranoid you'd want random ;d [07:51] always noid [07:52] i'll just buy a hrng [07:53] can get one for $40. would be awesome to have a quantum hrng but too much $ [07:55] those assholes need competition. I don't think the parts are much $ [07:55] quantum key exchange servers!
