[00:45] Hi all, quick question, is there a way to make VLC the default multimedia player in an easy step? [01:00] It is in lxde and gnome, don't know about xfce [01:00] I just use parole [01:01] I am just used to VLC, that's all [01:02] Maybe in some xfce settings, I mean the config files just like in gnome=dconf, gconf [01:02] I already did the right-click, open with, but I want something for all the file extensions available [01:11] Under /usr/share/applications/defaults.list it shows Totem... [01:11] so weird [01:12] which points to /etc/gnome/defaults.list [02:54] Hi, trying to fix my friend [02:54] Hi, trying to fix my friend's broken ubuntu install. [02:54] It was ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I installed xubuntu-desktop and rebooted, got the xubuntu login screen, tried to login, did the same thing - screen went black, there was one line of white text that flashed too fast for me to read it, then back to the login screen. Any idea where to find that line of text in the logs? [03:02] One thought... [03:02] !xhangs [03:02] If the GUI hangs after logging in, use to switch to text mode. Log in and do: rm .{X,ICE}authority [03:02] Unit193: Ah, thanks. [03:03] I presume you selected Xubuntu from the session options. [03:03] Unit193: It odesn't hang though, it flashes a black screen wiht one line of text, but it goes back to the gui login screen too fast for me to read it. [03:03] Unit193: I'll certainly give that a shot though. [03:45] Unit193: Actually, I didn't.... the login screen look changed so I assumed it had changed the default to xubuntu. When I used the dropdown, yay, I can login :-). [03:46] Whee! [03:47] Heh, that'd do it. Not sure why the other would fail, unless.. [03:49] Something weird with the other desktop manager, I guess. [04:04] Weird, I shut down fully and then booted, it booted and didn't give me a login screen, went straight into xubuntu, logged in and etc. [04:05] !crosspost | puff [04:05] puff: Please don't ask the same question in multiple Ubuntu channels at the same time. Many helpers are in more than one channel and it's not fair to them or the other people seeking support. [04:06] bazhang: Okay. [04:25] Hm, I installed xubuntu-desktop on top of this vanilla 16.04.1 LTS install. I got the login screen, used the dropdown to select xubuntu-session, now it seems to boot straight into xubuntu without prompting me to login. [04:26] Also, it never shows me the motherboard splash screen, so I don't get any chance to choose the boot device (to reinstlal from a USB drive ubuntu install). [04:39] Ah, heck with it, I'm going to reinstall. nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure. [04:39] Thanks though. [06:07] hi all [06:09] So i installed xubuntu on an hp elitebook and have been having major usb transfer speed problems, <1mb/s. I tried other kernels with no success and tried linux mint kde which uses the same kernel and had no issues there. The problem comes from xubuntu itself though the live cd works fine. xhci_hcd is the driver being used, i checked... [06:10] xubuntu23w: Tried the same with main Ubuntu yet? [06:11] no, didnt try the main one yet... [06:11] where would the differences lie? [06:11] i tried mint kde [06:13] i also tried mint mate before that and it was working fine [06:13] Mint != Ubuntu [06:14] i have a miserable internet connection and trying the main ubuntu too will be impossible right now, i downloaded too many isos as it is [06:14] i know they are different [06:14] the idea was that it is not a kernel issue [06:15] any chance to troubleshoot this without installing main ubuntu? [06:19] Well, my point merely was that it's most probably not limited to Xubuntu, but affects the whole Ubuntu family. [06:20] it would be good to know that for sure indeed krytarik. [06:21] perhaps though there are steps i can take regardless to see whether i can avoid it [06:22] xubuntu23w: I suggest asking in #ubuntu as well - more eyes. [06:23] krytarik: i'd have to confirm the error there as well :) - i guess i will... [06:24] Well, the channel serves *all* flavors. [06:24] Also, given the likelihood... [06:25] krytarik: ok! thx! [06:25] No problem. Good luck! === dreamon_ is now known as dreamon [17:26] hi [17:26] does anyone know how to install programs? [17:26] sudo apt install program [17:27] xubuntu15d: what's your real problem? [17:27] thank you [17:27] just testing how quickly someone would respond [17:27] thank you [17:28] response time = whether someone can help with what you want - if it had been 'I've got wireless issues' I'd not answer === Justanick1 is now known as Justanick [18:30] what is the best antivirus for xubuntu 16.04 for 2017 [18:32] I don't know anyone who uses antivirus on xubuntu [18:33] keep your system patched with security updates and don't install software you don't trust (debs from random sites, etc) and you should be good [18:39] thanks for your info [20:44] new install on Dell Inspiron; not detecting wireless card.
