IrcsomeBot<Mostaaaafaaaa> Hi everyone, I have an issue with Kubuntu. I installed Kubuntu 16.1 recently and sometimes my screen goes black with only one column of yellow pixels on the left. Nothing would work, no keyboard, no tty. If I restart it's ok until it happens again usually after one day or so. I'm using an Acer Aspire 5820t laptop. I also had Windows 7 in my laptop and it worked with no problems. So I guess it's not a hardware issue. "sudo lshw -01:11
IrcsomeBotgives me the following output:01:11

IrcsomeBot<Mostaaaafaaaa> Can anyone help me figure out what's the problem? Thank you.01:13

poco_hey guys after rebooting my Kubuntu 16.04 desktop I'm getting that infamous "black screen" instead of the Plasma login page. I can login via terminal just fine but I'm at my wits end trying to fix this. I have reinstalled the desktop enviornment, graphics drivers, sddm, etc trying to fix this and nothing. I've had this once before but nothing seems to be working this time. Anyone mind helping me out?03:03
poco_damn I really don't want to do another clean install03:36
valoriepoco_: have you added backports?03:50
valorieI think that would be worthwhile before doing a clean install03:50
poco_Yes I added the Kubuntu backports03:50
valoriehttp://kubuntu.org/news/plasma-5-6-4-available-in-16-04-backports/03:51
valorieoh, good03:51
valoriehow about `sudo apt install -f`03:52
valorief=fix03:52
valoriejust in case something is corrupted03:52
poco_did it, nothing updated03:52
valorieany other PPAs added?03:52
poco_yeah I mean I've been using this system for months so I have lots of ppas03:53
valoriesuch as?03:53
poco_graphics drivers, some applications I can't remember off the top of my head03:53
valoriehmmm03:54
poco_just found something that's curious03:54
poco_I don't have a xorg.conf file03:54
valorieI don't think that is standard anymore03:54
poco_ok because I have some xorg.conf.backup files I see03:55
poco_maybe that was from the last time I had this issue when I first installed this thing03:55
valorieI have none either03:56
valoriewhy did you need a PPA for graphics drivers?03:56
poco_it's what I was using before so I can have the latest Nivida drivers03:56
poco_I have nvidia-375 installed03:56
poco_tried removing and reinstalling those several times to no avail03:56
valoriewhat happens if you roll back to something that worked before?03:57
poco_sorry, roll back what?03:57
valoriegraphics driver03:57
poco_nividia-375 was working before03:58
poco_but I also tried nvidia-current as well03:58
poco_it appears that my graphics driver is working03:59
poco_I'd be more inclined to do a fresh install if you knew of a way I could backup all my desktop configurations that I have customized to my liking haha04:01
valoriewell, you can back up ~/.config and ~/.local04:02
valoriehowever, I would only move them back file by file04:02
valorieoh04:02
valoriebefore re-installing04:02
valoriehave you tried logging in with a new user?04:03
poco_I only have one user04:03
valorieright, making a new test user04:03
poco_but I can't even get to the GUI login page04:03
valorieyou never get to grub?04:04
poco_oh I get past there04:04
valorieor never get to SDDM04:04
poco_correct'04:04
poco_it just throws me to a black screen after the 'Kubuntu'logo and then I have to ctrl-alt-f1 to login04:04
valorieand you did install --reinstall SDDM?04:04
poco_yep... a lot haha04:04
poco_SDDM status shows everything good04:05
valoriehmmm, so plasma isn't starting04:05
valoriehow about install --reinstall plasma-desktop04:05
poco_hmm hold on it's saying --reinstall is not understood04:06
poco_whoops missed install04:07
valorie`sudo apt install --reinstall plasma-desktop`04:07
poco_alright did both. should I reboot?04:07
valoriedid it do anything?04:07

valorie`sudo apt install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop`04:08

poco_while I can't remember exactly what I did last time to fix this similar issue I do remember it having to do with 'plasma' in the solution. oh well04:09

valoriedepends on what you want04:18
poco_I really like KDE but my number one goal with all of this is to learn04:18
valorieit has the latest plasma, and latest KDE popular apps04:18
valorieon an Ubuntu 16.04 base04:18
poco_any reasons to keep Kubuntu over Neon?04:18
valorieeverything else is from the Ubuntu archive04:19
valorieas I said, depends on what you want04:19
valoriethey are basically rolling on a stable base04:19
valoriewhereas we send out a new version - tested - every six months04:19
poco_yeah a more bleeding edge DE does sound kind of fun04:20
poco_except when it craps the bed like right now :P04:20
valorieyou aren't bleeding edge, you are on 16.04 LTS04:20
* valorie is on 17.04, the alpha04:20
poco_well yes04:20
valorieyou can always try an upgrade to 16.1004:21
poco_but KDE updates faster on Neon than Kubuntu is what I meant04:21
valorie`sudo do-release-upgrade`04:21
valoriesometimes, yes they do04:21
valoriealthough we share packaging sometimes as well04:22
valorieI'm on both teams04:22
poco_so when you ask, depends what I want. What kinds of things should I be asking myself when deciding if Kubuntu or Neon is more my speed?04:22
valorieI think neon is awesome for experts04:22
poco_well I'm not an expert but I love learning this stuff04:23
* valorie isn't an expert either04:23
valorieand I would prefer to know less than I do about how to fix stuff04:23
valorielol04:23
valoriesince it usually means I messed something up04:24
poco_haha04:24
poco_well I appreciate you taking time out of your evening to help me outm valorie I really do. It's guys like you that keep me sucked into this linux world04:24
* valorie is no guy!04:25

poco_haha I meant that as in the collective guys! haha but my apologies04:25
valorieno apologies, most here are guys04:26
poco_Also I learned my lesson and will be doing more clonezilla image backups on my new system for when this happens to me again04:28
valoriebtw poco_, hang out in the #kde-neon chan, and see if you like the team04:37
valorieit's best IMO to work with people you like04:37

MrokiiHello. I have a strange problem. I am using the app Kupfer (an app that starts other apps via some shortcut/command-window). It is started automatically and runs, but the command-window doesn't open when I hit the shortcut. The only way it works is for me to stop the process and run Kupfer manually from the command-line. Kupfer doesn't even work when use Kubuntus own application launcher. Does anybody know09:10
Mrokiiwhat the problem could be?09:10
SeminarianWeird issue, phpstorm doesn't show an icon in my task bar. Tried reinstalling the program.. no luck09:21

MrokiiHello. I was changing something about auto-startup-apps and suddenly I can't log in to my desktop anymore. When I enter my password the mouse cursor changes to an "X" like the one when X11 doesn't start up properly and the screen only shows the login-screen. Is there something I could look for via dmesg or systemctl?12:06
BluesKajHiya folks12:34
stephanlapHello. I'm having problems with my desktop, have been writing about it some minutes ago via a tty. After fiddling with startup-applications, I can't log in anymore. The display stays on the login-screen and after switching to a tty and back the screen is blank. I tried to create a new user and log in with it, but it's just the same. Any thoughts?12:48
BluesKajtry startx in the tty12:50
stephanlapBluesKaj: Now that's strange. When using "startx" it shows a bar at the top that looks like from Gnome, even though this is a clean Kubuntu-installation. o.O12:53
stephanlapBluesKaj: BluesKaj I mean it shows "Activities", the clock cenetered and all the icons associated with Gnome.12:54
BluesKajstephanlap:  do you have a complete desktop ?12:54
stephanlapI can move the pointer but I can't click on anything. The desktop doesn't react.12:55
BluesKajstephanlap:  did you do any repartitioning before installation12:55
stephanlapBluesKaj: No, definitely not. The last thing I was doing was to disable an application for which auto-start was enabled.12:55
stephanlapBluesKaj: I had changed something in the grub-config-file before, but it was only about the resolution and I had successfully restarted after changing things.12:56
BluesKajis this a clean install in terms of / and retention of /home's mountpoint? because if you were on gnome previously the config files will stil be there12:58
stephanlapBluesKaj: No, the HD was a new one and I installed directly from a Kbuntu 16.x CD.12:59
stephanlapBluesKaj: There can't be any references to gnome, afaik, as there never was Gnome installed on this HD.12:59
BluesKajwhoa that's strange12:59
stephanlapAnd I am still getting the regular Kubuntu-login-screen, I just can't log in anymore.13:00
BluesKajwhich kubuntu?13:00
stephanlapWhen I do "sudo killall sddm" I see the login-screen again, but that's as far as I get.13:01
stephanlapBluesKaj: I think I had installed Kubuntu 16.04 and had later upgraded to 16.10. But that was some months ago.13:01
BluesKajstephanlap: which graphics/gpu?13:03
stephanlapnvidia13:03
BluesKajah ok, which nvidia ?13:04
stephanlapaccording to hwinfo it's GeForce 820013:04
BluesKajstephanlap:  in the vt/tty login then sudo apt install nvidia-34013:07
BluesKajthen reboot13:08
stephanlapokay, I'll try that.13:08
stephanlapI was just getting acquainted with the command line more and thought I knew what I was doing. Seems not, as I have no clue what went wrong. :p13:09
stephanlapBluesKaj: Didn't help, as it seems. The only thing that changed now is that I'm getting a black screen immedieately after trying to log in, and also an "X"-mouse cursor. i can move it, but as the screen is completely black there's nothing to click. :-/13:14
stephanlapOh wait... o.O13:16
stephanlapBluesKaj: It seems I can log in via my newly created user from before. o.O But not with my regular user. This seems to be a step forward.13:17
stephanlapNow the "only" question is, what in my regular user-folder causes the problem...13:17
BluesKajI was never a fan of avoiding regular user "workarounds" , make sure you installed the nvidia-340 as your original user13:19
stephanlapBluesKaj: I am sure I did, as I logged into the tty via my regular user-account.13:20
BluesKajok13:21
BluesKajin the the tty as regular user , sudo systemctl enable sddm, then, sudo systemsctl start sddm13:22
stephanlapAfter the first command I get some text about "Executing: /lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install enable sddm" and "the unit files have no installation config...". There's no error-message however.13:26
stephanlapPossibly a stupid question: Should I log out of the new user-account before trying these commands?13:27
BluesKajstephanlap:  these comands should be by the "regular user"13:31
stephanlapYeah, that's what I've done in the tty.13:31
stephanlapBluesKaj: I have just had a look at ".xsession-errors" and it had some messages about xrdb refusing a connection and being unable to open display ":0", as well and "xhost" being unable to open display ":0". There's a similar message about "dbus-update-activation-environment".13:38
stephanlapBluesKaj: and dbus refusing a connection to some socket in "/tmp". I wonder if these messages are part of the problem.13:39
BluesKajstephanlap: did you try startx13:39
BluesKajand I forgot to mention , did you update and upgrade your packages while logged in the tty as "regular user"13:41
BluesKajstephanlap: ^13:41
stephanlapBluesKaj: I just did. The same problem as before. On the tty-screen the strange Gnome-desktop comes up with no possibility to click on anything.13:41
stephanlapBluesKaj: I didn't upgrade and update but I'll try.13:42
BluesKajalways update and upgrade after a new install13:42
stephanlapTried it, nothing to upgrade13:43
BluesKajstephanlap:  install dkms just to make sure, it should be installed by default, but....13:44
stephanlapBluesKaj: It should be, as I have VirtualBox installed which I think wanted to have it.13:45
stephanlapYeah, it's installed.13:45
BluesKajyou have a vm running ?13:46
stephanlapNot at the moment, no.13:46
BluesKajok, you mentioned an upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10 , or is this a clean install ?13:49
stephanlapBluesKaj: I am pretty sure I upgrade from Kubuntu 16.04 to 16.10, but this was months ago.13:50
BluesKajrun lsb_release -a13:51
BluesKajstephanlap: ^13:51
stephanlapIt says Ubunt 16.10. But I definitely never installed anything else than Kubuntu on this HD and never installed any other desktop environments.13:53
=== lethu_ is now known as lethu
stephanlapBluesKaj: Sorry to keep you occupied for that long. I will see if I can get things working through some other means.13:58
stephanlapI just saw that one of my other HDs (to which some links from my regular user-folder point to) isn't mounted at all, for some reason. Not sure if that could cause the problems, but one can try...13:59
stephanlapSo the unmounted HD obviously wasn't the problem. :-/14:13
BluesKajstephanlap:  that may not be trrue if the boot manager is looking for other drives previously listed as entries in /etc/fstab then there could be    a problem, make sure the drive you want to use is listed as first in the UEFI/BIOS boot sequence14:18

=== clone is now known as clone_Q
clone_QI have a graphics card that will not give any display in X mode, the monitor saying "Input not supported", whereas in text mode (alt-F1) it works fine.18:03
clone_QI think this card worked fine before so I don't know what could be the issue18:04
clone_QIt is a GTX 950.18:04
lordievaderSounds like the set resolution is not supported by the monitor.18:04
clone_QIt seems yes but it is really set to 1024x768 and that is what I am now running in also, on a different GFX.18:05
clone_QAt first I thought maybe it could be my own X config but on a live DVD session it does the same18:05
clone_Qwhat's more, it also happens on SDDM, and not just a KDE session.18:05
clone_QIt's an analog DVI output (DVI-I -> VGA), what on earth could be the problem I wonder.18:06
clone_QI definitely ran Linux on that thing, before, although then I might have been using HDMI only.18:06
clone_QNow that I remember, Windows had issues on its DVI-I port also....18:06
clone_Qon a different computer even, I would get "mouse lag" in Windows.18:07
clone_Qwhich didn't happen on HDMI.18:07
clone_QIt's so terribly strange and basically renders the card half-dysfunctional but it doesn't work at all in Linux now, save for the TTY mode.18:08
clone_QI once overheated it by accident but it seemed to still work fine after.18:09
clone_QBut I have no clue how to troubleshoot it in Linux.18:09
clone_Qand everything is rather painful if you only have TTY ;-).18:10
clone_QMaybe I actually damaged the card...18:10
clone_Qhow does one easily redo the EDID detection of your monitor, or should it happen automatically?18:11
clone_QI am in 1024x768 because there is something wrong with the cabling at this point.18:11
=== Haudegen is now known as Guest42901
BluesKajwhat about using hdmi exclusively/18:13
BluesKaj?18:13
clone_QI was intending for it to be dual monitor although I could use the other card for it, I have 2 x16 slots.18:13
clone_QBut I have no HDMI monitor now.18:13
clone_Qat least not available.18:13
clone_Qbasically the test would be to connect it over HDMI to see if it works then.18:14
=== Guest42901 is now known as Haudegen
clone_Qbut this really... sucks. GTX 950 suddenly damaged...18:15
clone_QStill works in Windows.18:15
clone_QBut gives weirdness.18:15
clone_QOn VGA.18:15
clone_QBut what commands would I run to see what is going on?18:15
clone_Qxrandr also didn't give all normal output modes on it but it could have been the cable/EDID.18:16
clone_QIt is just so weird that TTY mode works fine, which also should be 1024x768 right.18:17
lordievaderChange the cable and see if edid works?18:17
clone_QI have been running in 1440x900 on this monitor just fine, on Windows lately. I need the extra length atm for the position of the monitor. I should be able to get it to work but it's been really annoying.18:18
clone_QI can take a DVI-I cable out and see if I get 1440x900 now.18:19
clone_Qbut I am not very likely to plug the 950 in again without extra "armor" ;-).18:19
clone_QBoth systems ( I have another card, R9 380) were meant to be dual monitor... this kinda ruins things.18:20
clone_QI purchased all kinds of VGA stuff (or DVI-I).18:21
clone_QSo how do I know how to retry the EDID thing?18:21
clone_QI may need to put the monitor close to the cable and fiddle with it until it works.18:22
clone_QBut I need to know if it is automatic or not.18:22
clone_Qthe nouveau driver does it at X start apparently.18:24
clone_Qbut that means leaving this chat while doing so ;-).18:25
clone_QIt doesn't do it again apparently when I turn off the monitor and back again.18:26
clone_QSo how do I know if it's okay without restarting X?18:26
lordievaderThere are a couple of tools to read edid info from the video card.18:36
lordievaderGoogle for it, forgot the name.18:36
clone_QYeah I found one18:42
clone_Qread-edid is in the repositories; makes "get-edid | parse-edid" do the trick, thanks.18:42
clone_QThe EDID problem seems to have been caused by a VGA switch that was in between :p. The switch would only report EDID when the monitor was connected to output 3, because it has 4 outputs :P :P :P.18:43
clone_Qdammit would never have thought that :p.18:44
clone_QBut the 950 problems also happened when directly connected without the switch.18:44
clone_Qanyway that solves my graphics problems for now, just not with the 950 yet...18:44
clone_Qbut at least now I know how to get edid information for that too18:49
lordievaderThose switches are teribble for EDID.18:49
clone_QI guess it is logical that they would only pass it for one output.18:50
clone_Qjust a little illogical that it is output number 3.18:50
clone_QIf I have 2 graphics cards in the system and I only connect the output of one of them... I mean which card is Linux going to pick?18:57
clone_Qand will the xrandr outputs be a collection of both of them? Will I found both outputs of both cards there?18:57
clone_Qin other words, can I safely connect the non-functioning device and test it after I connect something to it?18:58
clone_Qdoes Linux (or X, or KDE) automatically pick the card in the first slot?18:58
clone_Qor does it use the stuff the BIOS initializes first?18:59
clone_QI guess I will just hook the failing card and see for myself (hook it as second slot).18:59
clone_Q(second card).18:59

sintrebut sinse the work or volunteer requirment got into affect alot of the volunteers actually kind are in need i guess , thats why they're there19:13
BluesKajheh, i guy at the local seniors drop in center was going to "fix the computer" a freind gave them by trying to bring it home, but my friend managed to show hm there was nothing wrong because it was running ubuntu and not windows :-)19:14
sintre:)19:15
sintrei found out in hindsight unfurtately , nothihng i could of done to stop it , when i donated mine19:15
BluesKajthe last I heard the seniors were still using ubuntu19:15
sintrei normally do 3 or four food bank runs a year19:15
sintrethat would be a good outreach program , get a hardware drive of sorts going19:17
sintrethan macgyver a bunch of pcs and put kubuntu on em19:17
sintrei'm sure we all have a bunch of crap sitting in our closets going to no use19:18
BluesKajanyway, I'm a senior myself and I check in there every few months to see how they're managing , they have 3 pcs on the go there now19:18
sintrenice19:18
sintrei havre 4 old but funcional hdds sitting around collecting dust19:19
sintresomebody lse has a box and mobo , bam we go something19:19
lordievadersintre: I had it the other way around, motherboard had an nVidia chip. AMD gpu added.19:25
sintreahh interesting19:26
lordievaderIt was either... not both.19:28
=== Guest76028 is now known as Haudegen
clone_Qhiya19:36
sintrewb19:36
clone_Qit seems my problems were all due to cabling or there was something wrong with the connector on the card.19:36
sintrebtw while you were gone we had a talk about the duel issue19:36
clone_QI used the edid tool until it connected without error.19:36
clone_Qah19:36
sintrewell one thing that isn't needed now it seems is you would need to didable one or the other in bios19:37
sintreglad to here you got it fixed though :)19:37
sintreis on disabled by default ?19:38
clone_Qyeah. I could not get an image by default on the 2nd card.19:38
clone_Qbut the EDID information did read.19:38
sintreok is the one working the one you want working?19:38
clone_Q(or didn't, as the case may be :p).19:38
clone_Qboth are working now19:38
clone_Qthe EDID issue is what caused it not to function at all in X mode19:38
clone_Qsomething was wrong with the connector on the card I think.19:38
sintreis one an onboard chip and the other a actuall card , or are both cards?19:39
sintrenose just for info purposes here now :)19:39
clone_QI had it loaded as the second card, then I connected the cable to it, then ran the edid tool, then connected the cable back to the first card and read the output.19:39
clone_Qboth are cards.19:39
clone_QOne is GT 640 and other is GTX 950.19:40
sintreand both functional?19:40
sintrewill both output19:40
clone_Qat first I got .. well the second one does not do anything now.19:40
clone_QI'm not sure what X will do.19:40
sintrewell thats what we were thinking19:40
clone_Qbut BIOS/framebuffer driver doesn't do anything with it.19:40
clone_Qit is recognised by the system I guess.19:41
sintreit confuses the system with the two so it has to pick one19:41
clone_Qoh yes I was going to read xrandr info.19:41
clone_Qoh yes both cards are present as outputs :)19:41
sintreboth tested?19:42
sintreor just showing up19:42
clone_QDVI-I-1-2 disconnected HDMI-1-2 disconnected DVI-D-1-2 disconnected  <-- not yet, just showing up19:42
clone_Qthis is the second card now, the GT 640.19:42
clone_QI have to hook it up to the switch to be able to test it.19:42
sintrepls do :)19:43
clone_Qso both cards are actually hooked to the switch :p19:43
sintreinteresting set up19:43
clone_QI could put a cloned image on DVI-I-1-2 and see if it shows when I attack it to the monitor.19:43
clone_QI mean when I attack it to the switch and then switch to that input.19:43
clone_Qattach*19:43
sintrebe gentle with monitor19:44
sintre:P19:44
clone_Qhehe19:45
clone_Qbe gentle with knee *ouch*.19:45
clone_Qit shows the DVI-I-1-2 as connected now, the annoying thing is the switch doesn't pass the EDID when not selected.19:46
sintreso second card won't output19:47
clone_Qnot yet let's see what happens when I switch to it, but I don't know what happens so I have to think about what to do in case of black image :p19:47
clone_Qit works alright, but I can hardly clone it if not both have the same edid right.19:50
sintrewell funutately19:50
sintrei mean unfurtately19:50
sintrealot of duel monitor support problems19:51
sintrei would assume that easily translates into duel card problems as well19:51
sintresupposedly they're getting tackled one by one19:51
sintreyet to see it but , i can't even get clone to work with hdmi thru my new laptop19:51
sintreon my living room tv19:52
sintrewhich pisses me off to no end19:52
sintreas i have free hbo thru hbo go19:52
sintreand i'm not payinf 20 dollars for another cable box lol19:52
clone_Qmy keyboard started malfunctioning I don know why :p19:54
sintremy paticular problem is the screens one clone properly for the native resolution19:54
sintrewell if you can live with just one card for awhile19:54
sintrei would start there19:55
sintreget everything stable , and then later try to trouble shoot the other one working in tandum19:55
sintreits is a card you can pull out and all :)19:55
clone_Qright now it is the keyboard :p maybe it is just a battery problem :p19:55
sintrei just plugging it in for this type of trouble shooting lol19:56
clone_Qthis is so weird19:56
sintreand how the hell do you have two dedicated cards in  anotebook19:56
clone_Qwireless keyboard19:56
sintreohh19:57
sintregot a wired one around19:57
clone_Qmy system now outputs each keypress on the next keypress19:57
clone_Qyeah but I am at a distance19:57
sintreget a chair hehe19:58
clone_QI am on the floor :p19:58
clone_Qit only does it weird in the konsole and stuff ?19:58
clone_Qweirdness19:58
sintrewell until you use a wired keyboard you won't know19:58
sintrewifi or blutooth gizmoz have a habbit of going bonkers sometimes19:59
clone_Qwired keyboard has the same20:03
sintrenow this is getting odd20:03
sintrehmm20:03
sintrei suggest taking out one of the cards and starting from there20:04
clone_Qthis weird shit started happening when I did the clone or something, Or I didn't do any clone yet as a matter of fact.20:04
clone_Qno no not so rash20:04
sintrethe system seems to be very confused atm20:04
clone_QI am happy it is in lol20:04
sintrewell happy your keyboard doesn't work?20:04
sintrewe kind gotta deduce what is causing this system20:05
clone_Qcome on give it a break for now, I need to get this back to the first monitor first20:05
clone_Qactually there is only one monitor, but still :p20:05
sintrewhy do you need two cards ?20:05
sintreat this moment20:05
sintreif only one potential output20:06
clone_Qthe problem doesn't happen in kate, only in konsole20:06
clone_Qactually it seems to be delayed20:06
sintreswitch  might be aculptrit as well20:06
clone_Qlet's see20:06
clone_Qyeah yeah but not so fast.20:07
clone_QI haven't managed to type an xrandr command yet20:07
clone_Qwhat the hell you know20:08
clone_Qthis started happening after I put the output to the second card.20:08
clone_Qwut the thing is already cloned20:09
clone_Qif I switch the switch, the screen stays the same, so I have the same image on both cards?20:09
sintrei have no clue the brand or type of set up with the switch20:09
sintreat this point , going back to one card getting it working perfectly20:10
clone_Qthey keyboard anomaly only happens when I put the SWITCH to the 2nd card lol.20:10
sintreTHEN adding the second is your best bet to figure this out20:10
clone_Qit already works perfectly, I don't need to do that.20:10
sintreok then , i guess you good to go then20:10
sintrewithout a keyboard that works in konsole though20:11
clone_Qlook I'm having problems typing and you are suggesting I turn off the PC :p.20:11
sintreyes take out one of the card20:11
sintre's's20:11
clone_Qwhyt20:11
clone_Qwhy20:11
sintrebecause you can't even freakin type like you said20:11
clone_Qonly if the second card's output is used.20:12
sintrenot sure how much you pc is gonna be if you can't use a keyboard20:12
clone_Qif I press the switch, everything is back to normal.20:12
sintrethen why have the second output20:12
clone_Qjust for testing my friend.20:12
clone_Qyou wanted to know if it worked or not.20:12
sintreif it renders your system useless20:12
clone_Qwell actually.20:12
clone_Qcome on I only just found out.20:12
clone_Qwhat's the point of testing if there's nothing that's allowed to go wrong?20:13
sintrewell i dont have any more ideas to throw at it20:13
clone_QI would suggest relaxing.20:13
sintrelater in more u.s. primetime some guys and gals with alot more knoledge than me should be around20:13
clone_QInstead of trying to solve the problem ASAP.20:13
clone_Q:p.20:13
clone_Q:).20:14
clone_Qthank you though but... there is no issue, I only just found this thing out and I am still seeing what it's all about, that's all.20:14
clone_QIf you're not even giving me any time to type any command, how am I supposed to find anything out about what's causing it?20:15
clone_Qthe switch is not supposed to effect the computer apart from the edid thing20:25
clone_Qthe second card was really originally meant as a pass-through card for a virtual machine running Windows to game  in.20:26
clone_Qright now it is just a cute thing sitting in the machine because I have to put it somewhere :p.20:27
clone_Qthis was just my first test ever if two cards would work, same as for you I guess.20:27
clone_QThe Typing Thing was unexpected as the switch should not effect the computer.20:28
clone_Qcloning itself is problematic as xrandr needs both modes to be present on both cards at he same time to use the --same-as feature.20:29
clone_QIt is funny enough that I *can* get an image on the second monitor if I want to (using the second card in that sense).20:30
clone_QIt doesn't take much to achieve that, I mean.20:31
clone_QI have the weird typing on the second monitor (second card) even when the first card is not connected at all, meaning it should have little to do with the switch, and more with the card? I don know.20:35
clone_QAnyway I am happy it works at all and if I don't use the second card there are no issues.20:36
clone_QJust a bit disappointed I guess that there is such a weird issue with it.20:36
drostieSorry for people noticing the join messages.20:43
drostieDidn't realize I had my client attached to two things.20:43
drostieOk, now I should only have the one connection to freenode. :x20:45
MordasHowdy22:09
MordasI'm trying to get tor browser to work, but can't. I'm pretty new to kubuntu and it has worked before but will not now. Can anyone help?22:10
sintrewhat browser22:10
Mordasfirefox22:11
sintrewhat install did you do newer 16.10 or lts 16.0422:11
MordasI'll be honest, I'm kind of out of my element off a  windows machine. Trying to figure out how to check22:11
sintrestart settings22:12
sintreor sinse you out of element lets make this easier22:12
sintreright click on little k button at bottom left22:12
sintreand click alternatives22:12
sintrethen switch to menu mode22:13
MordasIt's not one of the options I'm given when right clicking,22:13
Mordasaha, got it22:13
sintreok now lets starty to find out what you installed22:13
sintresystem , then info center22:14
MordasI'm using 14.0422:14
sintreok way old there bud22:14
sintrelol22:14
MordasIt's an older laptop, I know its out of date.22:14
sintreok but in the mean time we can update you22:15
MordasHas worked great for me though22:15
sintrego to same place but click on konsole22:15
sintreyea not upgrading full distro just yet22:15
Mordaskonsole is open22:15
sintrewe gota update you apps and other things first22:15
MordasI've got updates going right now22:15
sintretype apt update22:15
sintrethen apt full-upgrade22:16
MordasI'm at 12%, but it is upgrading. I'm in the sticks so its only about 300 kbps22:16
sintreno rush22:16
MordasWould you say that could be why I've lost functionality?22:16
sintreif it working it working22:16
sintreoutdated browser most likely22:16
sintrewe'll fix this here soon22:17
MordasMakes sense.22:17
MordasI inherited a laptop with no os from my brother two years ago, decided to take my first step into open source.22:17
sintrealot of people still use 14 , but upgrade the packages22:17
sintreyea its a pain at first but you'll never go back once you are familiar22:18
MordasIt's taking forever and a day for this update, not moving off the 12%.22:18
sintreits alot , just go get a beer  :)22:18
MordasMy uncle reccomended it to me, I love it.22:18
sintreits gonna upgrade alot22:18
MordasWell, I've had it updating for at least 30 minutes or so haha22:18
MordasThe speed is varying, so I know it isn't stopping.22:18
sintrei'd look into statelite if your cable is that slow22:19
sintreor 56k or whatever you got22:19
MordasThe only bad luck I've had was that two days ago my desktop was completely lost. I could not right click, no start menu/task bar, no icons22:19
sintrethats abnomral22:19
MordasI eventually found a way to reset it to default on a forum, could not do better.22:19
sintremaybe after this update we might want to try and download22:20
Mordas13%, I'm really moving now.22:20
sintre16.04 lts22:20
sintrehey in an hour we'll be there22:20
sintre:)22:20
sintrebut i gotta start dinner her in 30 mins lol22:20
MordasLooking at my hardware, this thing is old22:20
Mordas1.7gb ram22:21
MordasAMD Sempron22:21
Mordas32 bit22:21
MordasI had considered upgrading, just wasn't sure how far before I was pushing my luck.22:21
sintrei use a 1.4 core two duo with 2 gigs of ram as my primary lappy22:21
sintrekubuntu runs fine22:21
sintrebut i kinda cheat as i also put a ssd in it22:21
MordasI bet it's 7 years old at least22:21
sintreyep22:21
MordasMaybe 1022:22
sintrealso it has a 128 nvidia mobile chip as well which also helps22:22
MordasNah, has windows 722:22
MordasNot 10 then.22:22
MordasHad*22:22
sintrething won't die lol22:22
sintrealthough speakers did battery did rest of it will boot :)22:22
MordasMy brother gave it to me. He had dropped it and destroyed the monitor after getting a virus on it. When I went to the backup partition, it was gone.22:22
sintregot a new system last october22:22
MordasThere was only a picture of one nude woman, not even that attractive.22:22
sintre8 gig 2ghz i3 laptop22:23
sintrelol , he got is pr0n in the wrong places lol22:23
sintre:P22:23
MordasWas a pretty funny way to get it, but I had been looking for an excuse to get into this for a while. My uncle was an early adopter and got me a knoppix cd to screw around with on my old windows 98 comp22:24
sintremy first experience with linux was for back up reasons22:24
sintreused a distro called puppy linux22:24
MordasHe recommended Kubuntu for me getting off Windows, I doubt he is using it himself.22:24
sintrenever thought of using it as my primary os22:24
MordasI've heard of it, I was reading several distros looking at lightweight. Xubuntu was another option I didn't go down.22:24
sintrebut oddly enough when windows shut down all support for xp22:24
sintrewhich this system came with i decided fk*** them22:25
sintreand i've never looked back22:25
sintrewindows actually drove me to linux lol22:25
MordasI use windows at work, mainly working in SAP.22:25
MordasBudget drove me to linux.22:25
MordasI started with open office on windows, then firefox, thunderbird, then finally went to the OS itself.22:26
Mordas14%!22:26
MordasI get a good deal on the cable and internet combo, and its fast enough for vids and everything else. I'm not sure why it's so slow today22:26
sintreagain slow22:27
sintrebecause old22:27
sintrehad same problem22:27
MordasI'm old and slow too. We make a fine pair.22:27
sintrei would look at cheap ssd's22:27
sintrecan get one on budget at 40-70 dollars22:27
sintreon sale now22:28
Mordasssd's?22:28
sintrethis older system uses a 120 gig one cost me 70 dollars last summer22:28
sintresolid state drive22:28
Mordasah22:28
sintreif you just have funcion22:28
sintreafter cuntion i'm sry22:28
sintre70 bucks is cheaper than 350 for new system22:28
Mordasyeah22:28
MordasI just keep winding up with stoneage laptops that I put to work22:29
MordasMy gaming needs don't go any deeper than MUD's, and my 386 ran those fine heh.22:29
sintrelol , i give alot of pc's away lately22:29
sintreno room in my small condo to even hook them up22:29
sintrei'm down to 3 notebooks now22:29
MordasI've got a barn, all the room I want.22:30
sintreone of which is a brick died in lightning strike22:30
sintrehey some benefit to licving in the sticks there :)22:30
Mordas16%!22:30
sintrelol22:30
MordasThough I use linux and SAP is my livelihood, in other ways I am more country than cornbread.22:30
sintrejust let it ride , hopefully it'll speed up22:30
MordasI've considered using some of my old desktops for target shooting.22:31
sintredepends on the dump near you , some assholes will charge more for crap with bullets in it target disposal and such22:32
MordasThe old man at the dump is king of that hill, his price depends on whether you get along well with him or not.22:32
MordasWe get along well.22:33
sintrehehe, suck up good22:33
MordasNot really, I just talk to him like he is a human being. Few offer him that courtesy.22:33
sintreyea well i think honest old timers should get respect desrved22:34
sintrethey could live another year or another five you never know22:34
MordasA lower social security number than god, holed up overalls, an unkempt beard, sometimes a shirt, and a early 80's 1 ton dodge pickup.22:34
MordasBut he's never done anything worse than look offensive to the eye and be hard of hearing as far as I can tell.22:35
sintreyea ran across guys like that22:35
nicklasrunning ubuntu mate :-)22:35
nicklasHello. Had to reinstall, cause when I tried to install nvidia via the ubuntu mate welcome/additional drivers, it did'nt finish all the way. The progress bar stopped right before the end. I rebooted, and gui wouldn't load, just had a blocks test text and a underline blinking randomly on black screen after booting. Is it safe to just try again, or should I do something else?22:35
sintrealright well i'm out for a bit gotta start some supper , i'll be around the keyboard once and awhile22:35
sintrei know its a slow download but it is upgrading ALOT22:35
MordasThanks, I'll be around but half afk too. I have a while to wait.22:35
MordasYou know, its funny'22:36
sintreimagine back in ms days22:36
MordasI only saw that update box populate after I reset the desktop to defaults.22:36
sintrewhen upgrading win98 took half a day lol22:36
sintreit won't be that bad22:36
MordasIf not for the problem, I would have went on.22:36
MordasI still have my windows 3.1 backup set of diskettes somewhere.22:36
sintrethat got intitiated because of the commands22:36
MordasAll 100 lbs of them.22:36
sintrelol , see you in 30 minutes we'll check in22:37
MordasLater and thanks again22:37
sintrenp22:37
MordasAlright, its done Sin23:36
sintregratz23:37
sintrehows it working now?23:37
MordasCan't seem to get it23:37
sintre?23:37
MordasI'm ready to start over from scratch23:37
sintreok lets download23:37
sintre16.04 lts23:37
Mordasmoment23:38
sintrehttp://kubuntu.com/getkubuntu/23:38
MordasI'm not ready to upgrade versions yet, the last time I did so I lost some data (or was unable to find it)23:38
MordasCan you help me understand a little more about what I can only call winzip for this?23:39
sintreyes but in mean time download it to have a copy if you have dvds23:39
sintrewhat are you trying to do?23:39
MordasInstall tor browser23:39
sintrewhich browser23:39
Mordastor browser, I used to use it.23:39
Mordassomehow it does not work anymore23:39
Mordasit adds on to firefox23:39
sintrefirefox is the browser23:40
sintrenot a plug in23:40
sintreok lets go to another route23:40
MordasI'm not sure how to describe it properly, it ran off of firefox before I think, but I don't know hwo or why that was.23:40
MordasI could be incorrect.23:40
sintrestart system then discover23:40
sintreand tell me if firefox is installed23:40
Mordasit is installed, am using it now23:41
sintreso what is the problem then23:41
MordasI wanted the tor version of it installed23:41
MordasI've got the archive (winzip clone) for it. I can't seem to get it working.23:42
sintrehmm i'm personally un aware of tor version23:42
MordasI open the folder, cannot extract it.23:42
MordasIt worked a long time ago, I don't remember when it stopped working.23:42
sintrecould be older theme pack of sorts that won't work with newer version as dirrectories and such achange23:43
MordasUnfortunate23:43
sintrewell old stuff stops working with tik eif unsupported23:43
sintredoies this have a website you could check , and see how recently it has been supported23:43
MordasI can't even seem to extract it23:43
Mordasfrom its ark file23:43
sintrethe zip file23:43
Mordasyeah23:44
sintrefind the file23:44
sintrethru23:44
sintredolphin23:44
sintresame place as discover23:44
MordasIt says Ark could not extract /home/arkb12 (million numbers).tar23:44
sintreno clue at this point23:45
sintrewhy do you want this theme anyways23:45
sintre?23:45
MordasI know I'm out of my element in this, but I don't think I'm stupid either heh.23:46
sintrei wouldn't try to help you if i thought you were23:46
sintreregular firefox works fine for me23:47
sintreif after all this trouble i'd leave well enough aklone imo23:47
MordasThat's probably what its going to be.23:47
sintrethis thing you were using as you said is very dated23:47
sintrejust like you system was23:47
MordasI'm one of those nuts that while I don't think I am that interesting, do enjoy the idea of an anonymous browser that the government or any would be data miner could not follow so easily.23:48
sintrei suggest now that you system is function imediately start to download 16.04 lts23:48
MordasSo I liked that tor thing.23:48
sintreburn a copu to dvd23:48
sintrewell linux is secure but not exactly private23:48
MordasIt will probably come to that.23:48
sintreany it can see your a linux user vs a windows user23:49
MordasIt was supposedly strong for anonymous browsing, and I enjoyed that. I am not trained in the particulars of why it is so.23:49
sintreand sinse windows 7 as an example is the most currently common os23:49
sintreyou'll stick out like asoar thumb no matter what "privatew" browser gizmo you have installed23:50
Mordasheh23:50
MordasTrue story23:50
sintrefirefox is pretty good on security in general23:50
MordasThere is no small amount of ego involved, I hate to be beaten by something that I'm sure has a reasonable explanation.23:51
sintrebut your not gonna be able to hide your using a os different than 90% of people out there23:51
sintregood news is your more secure than 90% of the people out there23:51
MordasThe sorrows of avoiding the evil empire at Microsoft.23:51
sintrewell more of us the better , welcome to the team  so to speak23:52
sintrebtw do you have the fireall gui installed?23:52
sintrefirewall23:52
