eldoHi.14:55
eldoI have a n00b question. I'd like to have two distros installed on my computer, Solus and Xubuntu. Which distro should I install first?14:55
pmjdebruijnI have no clue to what extent different distro "honor each other"14:56
pmjdebruijnthe generally wisdom would be "don't"14:57
pmjdebruijnboot loader aren't the most robust things in the world in the best of times :)14:57
digbychickenI haven't installed Solus before, but I have installed 2 Ubuntu flavors and the install process will ask if you want to install Ubuntu "alongside" the other distro.14:57
digbychickenIf you're still test driving, you might just do a live CD/USB14:58
eldodigbychicken: Solus installer also asks if I want to install it alongside the other distro14:59
eldopmjdebruijn that's why I am asking, I'm not familiar with the technical aspects of having two distros installed on one machine. I mean bootloader, grub etc. I don't want to f*ck up15:01
pmjdebruijnthe issue is, that this stuff changes through time15:03
pmjdebruijna few people care to keep track15:03
pmjdebruijnsingle boot rarely fails15:03
pmjdebruijnwhich is sortof why I'd advise against dual boot (in general, regardless of which OSes)15:03
pmjdebruijnespecially if you're not proficient with manual GRUB configuration/installation15:03
eldoI know how to edit grub file (quiet splash, boot time etc.) but I'm not a pro15:05
eldoI also asked on #Solus channel, but no response so far.15:07
eldoI'll stick with Xubuntu for some time.15:07
eldoThanks guys for your help.15:07

xubuntu_DudeJoin17:57
flocculantyou did17:57
xubuntu_Dudejust dropped in to see if by chance someone has tried Xubuntu 16.04  x64 on older Acer laptop with SIS and Broadcom chips?17:59
xubuntu_DudeIt's kind of an experiment - test bed18:01
flocculantxubuntu_Dude: well I've not noticed - but that doesn't mean they've not :)18:02
xubuntu_Dudewas wondering how to at CD boot up weather it will start up or I'll have to do some driver work first18:02
xubuntu_Dudeand how do to that?  Which option at boot or should I just let it run once and see?18:03
xubuntu_DudeWell I guess no guts no glory.... Here we go18:05
flocculantxubuntu_Dude: I'd try first - then see if you need do anything :)18:06
xubuntu_DudeK   i'll letr' rip and see, I'm on a KVM switch so I'll leave chat up, but will be switched to laptop screen18:07
xubuntu_DudeCrossed fingers18:07
xubuntu_Dudeok hers what I got18:16
xubuntu_DudeUpgrade Ubuntu 15.10 - Xubuntu16.04 LTS18:16
xubuntu_DudeInstall along side18:16
xubuntu_DudeErase disk and install Xubuntu 16.04 LTS18:17
xubuntu_Dudewould an upgrade retain any old SIS drivers and Bradcom stuff needed for the new install18:17
xubuntu_Dudewhich I had to do with 15.10 to get wireless and next step on in video resolution18:18
xubuntu_Dudeguess my question is, is the older SIS and Broacom stuff on the CD to find or will it try to recognize and install18:20
flocculantwell it might have back when 15.10 was still supported ... and an upgrade would iirc, upgrade packages it could upgrade and packages it couldn't would be removed18:20
xubuntu_Dudekind of figured that,, well it's a test bed learning thing for me anyway  we'll see   be back18:21
flocculantan upgrade with an iso - keeps /home but replaces old with new - maybe check out packages.ubuntu.com for the 2 you're concerned about - see if they exist still18:21
xubuntu_Dudeyep all started up ok doing updates... think I will have to checkin wireless.kernel.org to get wireless going but still doing updates we'll see after reboot19:26
flocculant:)19:30
xubuntu_Dudeflocculant: well all seems to be good with the new install.. did have to do the b43 self installer from wireless org alll seems good so fara21:44
xubuntu_Dudeseems to be a bit more responsive as well, smother at least21:45
xubuntu_Dudehaven't even don't the swappiness and cache settings yet and already better21:46
