bsmith093wedgie: soe black magic to pull the first 15 non-blnk lins out and throw them in a csv file.00:00
wedgiebsmith093: unless i'm misunderstanding, that should probably be inside of the "fi"00:01
wedgiebecuase you only wnat to do that for files (as opposed to directories)00:01
queskerhaha this is hilarious.  only ubuntu bash has problems with the newline file00:02
bsmith093that would explain why output.csv was pukin all over my terminal :)00:02

OerHeksmaybe time for a fresh install?00:21
elricsfatetarball: That likely shouldn't create an issue. Have you considered scripting it for posterity?00:22
AndChat|188244Fresh install would wipe out all we did, wouldn't it?00:22
tarballelricsfate, I dont know about posterity00:22

elricsfatetarball: It means "Do it for the future"00:23
AndChat|188244OerHeks is  there a way to install kernel 3.13 and fglrx from binaries?00:24
elricsfatetarball: Are you familiar with automation tools like ansible?00:24
abysmalweightOerHeks, I am just trying a headset I have for my phone (with the 3 layers on the jack like the picture you sent me) but it is only recognised as a headphone. Its mic doesnt work either. So I guess must be a software problem00:24
tarballelricsfate, not as of now :) but I think I found my answer: https://askubuntu.com/questions/252734/apt-get-mass-install-packages-from-a-file00:25
OerHeksAndChat|188244, Didn't you have the original kernel now? ..00:25

elricsfateAnsible can handle more than just installing the packages, it can also do things like placing yoiur config files in place.00:25
tarballelricsfate, ansible looks like a non-ubuntu thingy00:25
elricsfatetarball: Ansible is distro agnostic00:26

wolftuneHi folks. I have old Ubuntu install on external drive. I want to move the home directory to the new Ubuntu install on internal drive. What's the simplest way to do this, preserving permissions as needed etc?01:42
wolftuneI know I should boot off an Ubuntu live USB to do this01:42
DarkPsydeLordwolftune: never tried this but you should give it a try  http://askubuntu.com/questions/812675/moving-home-folder-to-new-installation-of-ubuntu01:45
DarkPsydeLordi usually have my /home folder on a separate partition01:45
wolftuneDarkPsydeLord: incidentally, it was in a seperate partition on the old drive, I just didn't bother doing that partition for the new install01:46
wolftuneI used to do that, but more recently I got convinced that it's not really worth it01:47
wolftunethat link looks good, came across many that seemed not as good when I was searching01:47
wolftunethanks01:47
DarkPsydeLordwell i do since i share the home folder with other 2 distributions :S01:47

wolftuneor not really?01:48
wolftuneI totally see though how shared home between distros could make sense…01:48
DarkPsydeLordwell if you keep a /home for every distro you will end up messing something in one or other distro01:50

KalElI want to run Ubuntu from Windows, which is my primary OS. Planning to use Virtualbox. Which version should I install?04:06
wafflejockKalEl, what do you want Ubuntu in virtual box for?04:07
wafflejockKalEl, just asking cause would guide to say which one you should probably grab/install04:08
KalElI generally like the linux platform (I have it in work). I will mostly use it for writing codes, may be python and c++.04:08
wafflejockKalEl, so you want to have a desktop environment that rules out server edition, other choice is particular version, 16.04 is the latest LTS next one with be 18.04, if you want newer software than came out with the april 2016 release you'd go a newer version number but means more frequent upgrades04:09
KalElWon't need a lot of GUI, just a clean interface and terminal mostly I suppose.04:09
wafflejockKalEl, regarding desktop environment flavors that just depends on preference and hardware you have available to throw at it04:10
KalElI got a 4790k in the host machine with 32GB DDR3 and nVidia GPU04:10
wafflejockIf you want something lightweight and simple maybe Mate, Lubuntu, XFCE, the machine can handle whatever though, Gnome3 or KDE Plasma are typically more resource heavy but include more animations and blending04:11
wafflejockor of course Unity the "default" if you like that04:11
KalElThanks04:11
TheMariuswafflejock, apparently it works well on surface04:11
TheMariusnot the chrome browser though which i use04:12
wafflejockTheMarius, ah good to here... hmm bummer on the second part though04:12
KalElWill probably go with Gnome then04:12

wafflejockKalEl, that's my preference :)04:12
TheMariusidk ... firefox seems to need a plugin for toutchscreen support under linux aswell04:12
KalElHow much space should I set aside for the system?04:12
KalElI mean HDD space04:13
TheMariusguess its because linux is separate programs running on top of eachother, more than a unified "soup" like windows04:13
wafflejockKalEl, Usually I give it at least 40GB with the virtual disks where it grows as it needs it, usually the system itself is like 20GB but if you have a big HDD more is "safer" for growing04:13
KalElI will need all compilers, vim, say emacs if I ever want to try evil... some lightweight GUI editor, and a good browser (Chrome?)04:13
xanguaTheMarius: gnome seems to be the desktop more focused to touchscreen04:14
TheMariuswe'll see.. it works fine for now04:14

KalElIt uses spaces to do tab, and not the \t character05:09

viral_mutantI have a deb package which installs modules in ‘site-packages’. The python on Ubuntu 16.04 cud not find that.07:35
viral_mutantIt needs modules in ‘dist-packages’ ?07:36
ikoniaso install that module ?07:36
viral_mutantthe deb package was created from an rpm package07:36
viral_mutantit installs files in site-packages07:36
ikoniabut doesn't change anything07:36
ikoniaso that sounds like a terrible idea07:36
viral_mutantthe files shud be in ‘dist-packages’ ?07:37
viral_mutantsearching over the net it says that if python is installed from Ubuntu repo it will look in dist-packages07:37
viral_mutantif it’s built from source it will look in site-packages ?07:37
viral_mutantso where shud the deb package install the files ?07:38
ikoniait will do what you tell it to do07:41
=== yeah is now known as idontwanttomakea
idontwanttomakeaHow do I switch Ubuntu from UEFI Mode to Legacy mode?07:42
idontwanttomakeaI messed up and now my bios wont recoginize i even have anything installed07:43
viral_mutantikonia: sorry, I didn’t understand that.07:43
ikoniaviral_mutant: packages will get put / look where you tell them to07:43
viral_mutantsame deb can be used on both kind of machines ?07:43
ikoniaidontwanttomakea: it's an install time setting07:43
ikoniaviral_mutant: no07:43
ikoniaviral_mutant: quite the opposite, thats why I said trying to use stuff designed for redhat is a bad idea07:44
idontwanttomakeawhat do you mean ikonia07:44
idontwanttomakeais there no way to chaneg it07:44
ikoniaidontwanttomakea: I mean you install/set the boot configuration during the install routine07:44
idontwanttomakeachange07:44
idontwanttomakeaikonia is there any way i can fix it after the fact?07:45
ikoniato change it would be a lot of mnanual steps, it's not just a switch07:45
viral_mutantikonia: I am building the package from source07:45
idontwanttomakeaif i change it back to uefi in the bios07:45
ikoniaviral_mutant: ok, so you can tell it what to do07:45
idontwanttomakeamy computer still doesn't recoginize it07:45
ikoniaidontwanttomakea: you need to be specific about the error,07:45
idontwanttomakeaikonia it says that i need to install something on the hard disk07:46
ikoniaidontwanttomakea: what does it actually say07:46
idontwanttomakeai don't remember exactly07:47
idontwanttomakeabut07:47
ikoniayou need to get the exact info then07:47
viral_mutantikonia: yes, I can tell it what to do. But how to tell the deb package to install the module at the appropriate location depending upon the kind of python flavor installed ?07:47
idontwanttomakeathere is no exact info07:47
ikoniaidontwanttomakea: there is, it gives an exact error07:47
idontwanttomakeai'm on the computer right now using a usb drive07:47
idontwanttomakeai can try to go check but07:47
ikoniaviral_mutant: you put configuration parameters into install routine that can evaluate, however that sounds like the wrong way to approach it07:47
idontwanttomakeaitll be harder that way07:47
ikoniathe package should just install things to one place, there shouldn't be "multiple options" as it's just for one distro, one version, so one place07:48
EriC^^idontwanttomakea: why do you want to switch it?07:48
viral_mutantikonia: but the customer may have installed python differently, right ?07:49
ikoniano07:49
viral_mutantI shud just assume that they would have installed python provided by Ubuntu repo and install the file in ‘dist-packages’ ?07:50
ikoniaubuntu shipped python is the only one you should depend on07:51
ikonia(please try to use non text speak like "should" rather than "shud"07:51
Aliekezhihi, I forgot my sudo password but I can't access the grub menu while booting to reinitialize it...I tried to hold shift key or F12, but it stills boot ubuntu as usual...Any idea ?07:52
ikoniaF12 is a bios sequence07:53
ducasseAliekezhi: try esc or left shift07:53
ikoniathe key squence for grub has changed during releases, may do well to check what it currently is for 16.0407:53
ikoniaah, thank you ducasse07:53
ducassenp07:53
viral_mutantikonia: ok. I thought there might be some control flag in deb package building which would detect where to install the files based upon python flavor07:54
Aliekezhioh, mb, I just realize the boot wasso fast that I had to press shift like one half second after the power button, problem solved XD07:54
ikoniaviral_mutant: you really don't want to go that way07:54
anddamcan anyone with a non en_US LANG setting please check what gnome terminal provides for LANG in a bash shell?08:22
alkisganddam:  el_GR.UTF-808:23
alkisg(mate-terminal, I hope it doesn't matter to you... it's the same in gnome as well)08:23
anddamalkisg: parakalo08:23
anddamif it's the same then it's good08:24
alkisganddam: xaxa, that's "you're welcome"; while "eycharisto" is "thank you" :)08:24
anddamah I mixed those up08:24
anddambtw I'd have written that as 'efkaristo' by the sound of it08:24
anddamanyway my issue is that I have a en_GB.UTF-8 in /etc/default/profile but then gnome-terminal with a login shell shows en_US.UTF-808:25

cpaelzeranddam: it was changed to be a preallocated ID08:36
cpaelzeranddam: that is from that range08:36
anddamakik: done that already, btw grep doesn't automatically recurse directory (unlike the awesome ag)08:36
cpaelzeranddam: it gives you cross system ID equality which can help e.g. with migrations based on NFS backends08:36

DevAntoinewhen wanting to make a process run in the background you do "process &". But what if the process takes arguments? It doesn't work anymore.08:42
anddammm the new user has a proper locale in gnome terminal, so definitely something on my user settings08:42

anddamalkisg: nothing relevant, check the gist for accountsservice-user file08:44
DevAntoinealkisg: doesn't seem to work with "nodemon server.js &"08:45
anddamDevAntoine: you missed the point of that suggestion, the thing is to "put & at the end"08:45
DevAntoineanddam: already tried, first thing I tried08:45
anddamDevAntoine: that's should have been the first thing to say, what did you try and what output did you get?08:46
DevAntoineyeah, sorry08:46
anddamall the others: I'm out of ideas about this locale thing, I can obviously override that in my shell runcontrol files, but it bugs me a little08:47

alkisgWhile en might imply en_US08:49
anddamalkisg: how's that properly set?08:49
anddamSystem Settings?08:49
alkisganddam: there's a gnome dialog for language, yes somewhere there08:50
DevAntoine"nodemon server.js &" but it still uses the terminal08:50

alkisganddam: I never use it because it's too buggy in recent gnome and unity08:50
anddamalkisg: yay for me08:50
dconroyive never run nodemon manually but instead only through a node module configured08:51
alkisgDevAntoine: background processes still output to the terminal, but can't receive input from it. If you don't want them to have output, you need to put >/dev/null 2>&1 at the end08:52

anddamis it trying to move the whole home as its own subdirectory "Videos"?08:54
alkisganddam: that's normal; it just detected a language change and prompts for the new settings. No, it's trying to use "Videos" for videos only08:54
anddamthat btw wasn't there at all in the English setting, I had to create it myself08:54
ducasseDevAntoine: use 'nohup' or screen/tmux08:54
anddamalkisg: but Videos wasn't there on the 16.04 install a couple weeks ago08:54
DevAntoineducasse: did it with screen08:55
anddamDevAntoine: I strongly prefer tmux over screen08:55
alkisganddam: cat ~/.config/user-dirs.*08:55
DevAntoineanddam: never used it, I needed it to be done fast08:55
anddamDevAntoine: point is if you actually need to interact again with the process later, if not just go with nohup08:56
anddamalkisg: oh jeez08:56
anddamalkisg: .config/user-dirs.locale  has en_US08:56
anddamand I see XDG_VIDEO_DIRS was just $HOME, not sure why08:57
alkisganddam: click yes on the update dialog08:57
anddamalkisg: yes, I see what's happening nwo08:57
anddamnow08:57
anddambtw the newly created user has a proper XDG_VIDEOS_DIR setting08:57
anddamcuriouser and curiouser08:58
alkisganddam: nah it's normal; even translators have a say in this thing :)08:58
anddamalkisg: why is that .locale en_US?08:58
anddamshould I edit it?08:58
anddamuser-dirs.locale it is08:59
alkisganddam: if it's still en_US after you select en_GB in gnome dialog and logout/login... then yes edit it manually08:59
alkisg(edit while logged out)08:59
DevAntoineanddam: well, I'm unlucky I guess: https://github.com/remy/nodemon/issues/29609:00
anddamalkisg: picking yes to the dialog set that as well09:01
alkisgNice09:01
DevAntoineokay, I have to redirect the output09:01
anddamseems more the input, from the ticket09:03
anddamlast bit is the real deal09:03
anddamthe process wants to use stdin unless you use -I09:04
anddamand since you're putting it in background that's advisable09:04

barryHi guys, I have a webserver running 12.04 with a pretty normal apache/php setup. At some point this morning though the server started really struggling, and by the time i successfully ssh'd in it had 112 fuser processes running hogging all the resources. Has anyone experienced that?( I'm aware of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php5/+bug/877894 . In terms of scale, 112 is nowhere near the amount reported there though)12:23

JediMasterFinalX, figured it out, you can use ssh-keygen -F IP to work out if the IP exists in known_hosts already: ssh-keygen -F $IP > /dev/null || ssh-keyscan -H $IP >> ~/.ssh/known_hosts12:29
ikonialighting is integrated into thunderbird now isn't it ?12:30
FinalXah!12:30
FinalXJediMaster: nice :)12:30

cpaelzeranddam: well --system and fix UID/GID kind of oppose each other12:31
JediMasterI wonder if anyone has actually experienced an SSH MITM attack12:31
dagere891ikonia: I read this as well, but in thunderbird 45 I still need to install it..12:31
k1l_m_tadeu: then ask them if they can fix that package to fullfill that dependency so unity and kubuntu can be installed at same time12:31
FinalXJediMaster: all our 1000+ servers are managed through Puppet, and all SSHFP's are uploaded into puppet's db, so we can extract them through json exports and load them into our DNS, then just use VerifyHostKeyDNS12:31
m_tadeuk1l_, hateball: will do...thanks for your help12:32
FinalX(only works well if your zone is DNSSEC signed, though, by default OpenSSH won't allow SSHFP to be used if it's not validated through DNSSEC)12:32
JediMasterFinalX, doing something similar with our Chef setup. Auto-generating ssh keys, uploading the public key to the node's attributes. Will take a look at the DNS method, thanks12:33
FinalXUber also now has a sort of CA to sign private/public key pairs, incl. revocation data and all, and that all sounds very cool and promising. But it's not implemented in OpenSSH so.. you know12:34
JediMasterNice idea, but seems a little overkill =)12:34
JediMasterBut depends on the use-case though12:35
FinalXyeah12:35
FinalXthing with SSHFP is, you know it's the right key, even if it's the first time you connect12:35
FinalXplus it works for everyone in one go, instead of each person having to create their known_hosts themselves12:36
FinalX(or maintain it..)12:36
DottorLeoi have a laptop with a Sandy Bridge processor and an Nvidia 610M as discrete card, what is the best setup to use the discrete card? Pure Mesa? Mesa for Intel and Nvidia closed driver for the discrete card?12:37
FinalXgood question; also in some laptops you can disable the switching and just use the dedicated permanently instead, which is often better and not that much more power consuming at all12:39
FinalXI can't in my Dell Latitude E6440, but I haven't really had any problems with the default drivers or the need for better ones12:39
DottorLeoFinalX: yes but the Nvidia card is more performant on 3D application :S12:39
FinalXyeah, hence me wondering if you can just disable the Intel HD and leave the nVidia as the only card.. then just use the nVidia driver12:40
FinalXcan't force the switch on mine either, though, the laptop determines which one is used depending on the performance asked of the system12:41

CrazySaneI admit, I haven't adjusted to SYSTEMD all that well, I just haven't learned it all yet. Does the existence of an init.d entry mean that a service is upstart? How do I check specifically that something is SYSTEMD?14:15
FinalXCrazySane: there's only one init-system handling the startup of things, even if something is in init.d, it'll be started by systemd if it's the active init manager14:16

CrazySaneFinalX: Right. I know systemd is doing the real work, but since some things still install into init.d, I wanted to know how to tell if a service is native systemd or still using upstart (init.d). cfhowlettelias_a, in your irc client:   /ignore RxMcDonald14:20
FinalXCrazySane: pretty much, yeah, though init.d scripts can be treated like systemd scripts of sorts. some applications only have init.d scripts, and I make exceptions for them and rules for them with standard systemd unit files as if it was any other.14:21
FinalXCrazySane: fstab mounts are also done by systemd, for example, so you could use systemd to determine the order in which they're mounted better14:21
CrazySaneFinalX: thanks.14:22
k1l_karl__: its about this package whis is non-free in the meaning of debian: https://packages.debian.org/sid/emacs24-common-non-dfsg14:23

naccanddam: read the section on "USER MODE" in the manpage?16:44
anddamnacc: honest answer?16:44
naccanddam: in the context of that manpage, it's referring to that 'user mode' not the typical meaning16:45
anddamnacc: no, I haven't yet16:45
anddamreading now16:45
anddamthx16:45
naccanddam: ok, it's relatively important (I don't know much about texlive -- but it seems like you could, as root, pass an appropriate usertree option. However, I'm not sure on permissions, etc.). What texlive pacakge do you need?16:46
=== Isla_de_Muerte is now known as NwS
anddamnacc: I read the USER MODE section, I'm not sure how that applies though16:48
anddamnacc: I need needspace package http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/needspace16:48
naccanddam: the earlier reference in the manpage to being 'in user mode' is specifically about that later section about UESR MODE16:49
anddamnacc: so given that the debian man page says tlmgr always run in user mode, I'd need to run --usertree with the path to the system tree16:49
naccanddam: yes, probably, and as root. But I'm not sure that's the intended use, anyways16:49
anddamnacc: and ofc I should do this as root (or other user with write permission to the tree)16:49
naccanddam: and it's possible it would break your installation16:49
anddamnacc: I'm trying to figure what the intended use is, to be ubuntu-compliant16:49
dannyLopezDont work even GNome. :O16:49
RoshanAny one please help wifi is not working in ubuntu 4.0416:50
anddamnacc: I don't really care for thes solution, I just want to compile the source16:50
naccanddam: presumably it's to install extra tex packages in your home directory (or arbitrary directories).16:50
naccanddam: you could also try putting in /usr/local to see what it installs and then decide if it's useful or not16:50
anddamand then how do I tell latex to use that additional, user-based tree?16:50
Roshannacc: I am getting issue in wifi in ubuntu16:51

anddamRoshan: you didn't provide any useful information about your issue16:51
naccanddam: if you install somewhere else, you might need to tweak a tex path or something16:51
naccanddam: in any case, at least in 17.04, needspace is in texlive-latex-extra16:52
naccanddam: let me look on 16.04, presuming that's what you are running16:52

Jambonorwedgie:  a hub, and two patch cables.  All the gear works.  If I unplug from this network and just plug in to the router from my ISP, they can both get an internet connection.21:57
SebthreeBQM10HDmk not sure  what debfoster is but hmm, and  i didn't know there was a command21:57
JambonorBut the above method doesn't connect them.21:57
coffeeguyhehe anyone have a link for ditching gnome and going back to unity in ubu 16.04?21:57
JambonorEven though ifconfig looks like they are.21:57
SebthreeBQM10HDcoffeeguy, uhmm unity is based on gnome for various othr things21:58
coffeeguythat's fine but unity is going away from gnome i thought21:58
ppfJambonor: how do you check whether they're connected?21:58
MKI installed MATE to test it and was able to use and then uninstall it without issue, thankfully. But apparently Unity and KDE right now cannot be on the same system due to a package conflict :( So, which meta package should I uninstall? ubuntu-desktop?21:58
Jambonorppf: pinging each others IPs.21:59
SebthreeBQM10HDcoffeeguy, unity 7 will stay gnome based with compiz.  unity  8 on the other hand uses qt qml or whatever21:59
JambonorBoth machines let pings out, and can ping each other when on the ISP's router's network.21:59
ppfcan you paste the output of ifconfig on both machines?21:59
coffeeguywell i used the ubuntu help for getting rid of gnome-desktop and now unity is screwed up?21:59
ppfand also ip route, please21:59
coffeeguyeverything is going qt21:59
SebthreeBQM10HDcoffeeguy, unity should be ok sty, even if you removed gnome shell22:00
ppfdo you have network manager running? or are you using /etc/network/interfaces?22:00
SebthreeBQM10HDcoffeeguy, and gnome shell should stay, if you removed unity22:00
coffeeguystill getting the loading scream for gdm though on  system start up22:00
coffeeguyscreen* lol22:00
Jambonorppf: here: http://pastebin.com/n1jbmYfF22:00
Jambonorppf: both machines are terminal only.22:01
coffeeguyand there's residual stuff like scaling is out of wack22:01
coffeeguyi should've specified that i had a 4k screen :|22:01
Jambonorppf: and ip route: http://pastebin.com/d6F9ezwq22:02
coffeeguyhmm back to the how-to's ciao22:02
Jambonorboth machines are connected to the internet and a different mutual network via their wlan0 (which is how I'm connected to them).22:03
noise_hi where can i find package of ddd? and gcc-python3-plugin?22:04
noise_it does noyt show up in the default search22:04
k1l_!info gcc-python3-plugin22:04
ubottugcc-python3-plugin (source: gcc-python-plugin): plugin for GCC to invoke Python scripts from inside the compiler. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.15-3 (yakkety), package size 168 kB, installed size 1180 kB22:04
k1l_noise_: what ubunut are you on exactly and is universe enabled?22:04
Picinoise_: you need to be running 16.04 or later.22:04
ppfJambonor: doesnt mean that nm isn't doing the networking22:05
JambonorHmm, well, I wouldn't know how to check.22:05
JambonorStill though, according to ifconfig they should be on the same machine.22:06
ppfJambonor: which of the connections is the one in question? eth0?22:06
Jambonoryes, eth0 in both cases, all the other stuff is to do with docker, and I doubt is the problem.22:07
kur1jppf: I don't quite see how the ".run" file is going to work with other kernels if it is asking for a linux kernel headers22:07
kur1jif its compiling against them, ill just have to redo this when someone updates the kernel22:07
kur1jwould I not?22:07
ppfthat's what dkms does22:08
ppfit'll recompile a module for every new kernel22:08
kur1jso in the background it will do it?22:08
ppfyes22:08
ppfwell, in the foreground, technically22:08
ppfit's a hook in the apt upgrade sequence22:09
kur1jah22:09
ppfJambonor: eth0 on your second machine looks weird.22:16
ppfthere is no traffic going on22:16
JambonorI think there's no traffic on either, the traffic showing on the first one is from it was plugged in to a different network I think.22:16
JambonorI assume at least.22:17
ppfplug the second eth0 into another network?22:17
JambonorHave before and it worked, will try again.22:18
JambonorYeah, works.  Gets DHCP address from the router on the other network, and can reach the internet and ping other machines on that new network.22:19

JambonorAnd also doesn't work when back on the problem network.22:24
Livingroomhello linux peoples. question: i want to copy all the .jpg files in a directory tree. can i cp -r /directory/containing/jpgs/*.jpg /destination/folder or need i do something else? i dont want to copy the directory structure to the destination, just the jpgs. thanks!22:31
naccLivingroom: why do you need -r?22:32
OerHeks-R recursive would do yes22:32
naccLivingroom: but if you don't want to copy the directory structure, passing -r makes no sense22:32
Livingroomnacc well i didnt know how else to tell it to recurse subdirectories for .jpg files22:32
naccLivingroom: that isn't what your command tells cp to do either22:33
=== ia__ is now known as ia_
naccLivingroom: you would want to say `cp -r /directory/containing/jpgs /destination/folder`22:33
naccLivingroom: but then it will copy the directory structure22:33
naccLivingroom: a potentially better way would be `find /directory/containing/jpgs -name '*.jpg' -exec cp {} /destination/folder/. \;`22:34
naccLivingroom: which will copy any file (or directory) found under /directory/containing/jpgs that matches '*.jpg' to /destination/folder.22:35
Livingroomnacc thanks!!!22:36
=== Birosso is now known as Bigotto
naccLivingroom: the version you have will be expanded by the shell first, iiuc, and you will get a resulting command line of `cp -r /directory/containing/jpgs/a.jpg ... /directory/containing/z.jpg /destination/folder` where a.jpg and z.jpg are example jpg files in /directory/containing/jpgs (but not in subdirectories). It doesn't make sense to recurse on files, so the -r operator doesn't do anything.22:36
naccLivingroom: does that make sense?22:36
Livingroomnacc: yes, thanks; i knew that the -r does exact directory tree copy when used with just directory names, didnt know if changing it to a file (*.jpg) changed the meaning. thanks again!22:37
Wulungany "Ubuntu Wiki Editors" active here ?22:38
naccLivingroom: to be clear, the meaning didn't change, but give a file to a recursive operation doesn't mean anything semantically22:39
naccWulung: yes. Why do you ask?22:39
Wulungthis page : wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases need to be updated for 16.04.2 LTS22:40
naccWulung: why?22:41
naccWulung: it's listed in the 'current' box22:41
Livingroomnacc, i got an error: find: illegal option -- n22:41
naccLivingroom: pastebin the command and output?22:42
Wulungnacc: haha just updated22:42
Wulungthanks anyway22:43
naccWulung: np22:43
Livingroomnacc:  nevermind, i think i figured it out22:44
Livingroomnacc: yes, i screwed it up. i didnt give it an input operator. sorry! :|22:44
Livingroomalso, holy *CRAP* that was fast22:44
Livingroomnacc: i made a paste anyway though http://pastebin.com/zTEwTL8r22:45
naccLivingroom: right, you didn't pass it the directory to find in, looks like it worked the next time22:48
naccLivingroom: note you can add operators before -exec so it can be more verbose of what it copies, etc.22:48
Livingroomnacc yup, sorry i thought since i was *in* the directory i wanted to use, it might work22:48
naccLivingroom: in that case you can use '.'22:48
naccLivingroom: e.g., `find . ...`22:48
Livingroomoh right, the dot. i forgot about that22:48
Livingroomnacc thank you very much though!22:49
naccLivingroom: np22:49
Livingroomnacc: i'm just so happy MacOS is certified unix, the parity of commands in terminal makes my life generally easier. now if i could just remember enough of them from my linux days lol22:51
noise_k1l_: Pici, i just installed 16.04 desktop22:59
k1l_noise_: run "sudo apt update"22:59
noise_k1l_: I did, still does n't show up on search23:01
naccnoise_: what pacakge did you search from?23:02
k1l_noise_: is universe enabled?23:02
noise_http://pastebin.com/ZenHJfza23:03
noise_there is an application called "ubuntu software"  looks like aptitude used to..23:04
noise_I searched in that23:04
k1l_noise_: only security universe is activated23:04
noise_how do I "enable universe"?23:04
nacc!components | noise_23:04
ubottunoise_: The packages in Ubuntu are divided into several sections. More information at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories - See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecommendedSources for the recommended way to set up your repositories.23:04
k1l_noise_: go to systemsettings > software and update. then check universe23:05
noise_Thats the second option right? community maintained free and opensource software ( universe) ?  Itis already selected23:06
k1l_can you uncheck it and check it again?23:08
dannyLpzWho is the name for F3, I mean, for F1 is meta2-P23:09
k1l_after that run "sudo apt update && apt policy gcc-python3-plugin | nc termbin.com 9999"23:09
lmwWhere can I find Ubuntu for PowerPC?23:10
genii!ppc23:10
ubottuPowerPC.  Formerly used by Apple for the Macintosh line of computers. Variants are now used in popular gaming consoles. PPC was a fully supported Ubuntu architecture until 6.10. It is now a community port, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ23:10
noise_I installed synaptic and it can find these packages :)23:16
noise_hopefully I will be debugging python scripts calling c++ shared libs very soon :) thanks y'all23:16

Bashing-om!nomodeset | kaosine Try:23:53
ubottukaosine Try:: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter23:53
