OerHeksfiter, step 1. if you don't have a backup of your data, it is not important, step 2 download 16.0405:21

fiterOerHeks:  I don't have a backup of my data.05:22
fiterOerHeks:  why download 16.04 can I not accomplish it through upgrading as downloading will need to make a usb stick ??05:24
OerHeksfiter, you can upgrade, with the eolupgrade page. i would reinstall, much faster.05:25
OerHeksseee the part old-releases and how to put that in your sources.list05:26
OerHeksanyway, it is alway good to have an usb with the latest iso ready *before upgrading*, for when your system becomes corrupted.05:27

Frank_Jamesohey, does anyone ever have issues on a thinkpad x200 tablet with the wifi? Mine sometimes just stops working. I do sudo service network-manager restart, and that used to fix it, but now it seems like a crap shoot (pardon the language)05:49
Frank_JamesoAlso, I came in here out of nostalgia, even though it's not a question or an answer, I have good memories of this place.05:49
rynan7I am new to ubuntu and I was wondering if anyone could give me an example of how to chown a directory to a user?05:50
Frank_Jamesorynan7: if you type in man chown in the terminal, it will give you a manual to it. I know it's a bit daunting when you're newer so...05:51
rynan7I have the basics I keep messing up on the group part05:51
Frank_Jamesoif you scroll down though into that manual from the command 'man chown', you'll see a lot of arguments you can add in to the command, one is -R, or you can type the full thing, which is --recursove (two -'s).05:51
hicoleriThe time on my system clock resets to UTC time after each reboot for some reason even though the local timezones are different, but it syncs itself to local time if it has access to the internet. How do I make the local time not 'reset' itself05:51
Frank_Jamesothat recursive command is required to get everything inside of a folder.05:52
Frank_Jamesoalso when in a manual, you can type the letter q to leave it and go back to the terminal05:52
rynan7thank you Frank just one more question. Do you enter the user first or the directory?05:53
pottsyHow can you have trouble with chown,  its such a self explanitory command   : chown -R user:group /directory05:54
Frank_JamesoI was actually retesting the command as you type that, this worked for me, assuming the user's name is Jameso and the folder's name is folder:05:54
Frank_Jamesorynan7: chown -R Jameso folder05:54
rynan7ok thanks again05:55

craptalki heard people running ubuntu has lower lasting battery compared to other OSes, is it true?07:10
craptalkmine i got brand new laptop installed ubuntu-gnome, and it last around 2 hours for various activities (coding, streeaming, browsing)07:11
craptalkplease enlighten me on this, thank you07:11
squelchit not a myth07:11
Frank_Jamesoone sec on that craptalk07:11
craptalkFrank_Jameso, yes, any help would be appreciated07:12
craptalki got this source: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=221054707:12
Frank_Jamesogenerally it is worse07:13
Frank_Jamesobut I've used a program in the past to sort of fine tune it07:13
hateballcraptalk: upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT007:13
craptalkFrank_Jameso, worse in what perspective? is it cause the management of the battery from the OS, or what? cause you know, mine is brand new, it should be something else07:13
Frank_JamesoI'm trying to verify it's name. If you check the program out thoroughly, you'll probably be pretty impressed with what it can do. But it may take some adjusting to get it perfect for your needs07:13
craptalkhateball, what can i check from your command?07:14
Frank_Jamesocraptalk, ironically I'm talking from an area where I don't know for sure on that one, so I have to guess and my guess is that they just don't overly optimize to be safe.07:14
hateballcraptalk: the state of your battery, which you asked for07:14
Frank_Jamesook craptalk, use apt to install powertop07:15
Frank_Jamesoand then run that with root privileges07:15
craptalkhateball, this is the result http://termbin.com/xy5f07:15
Frank_Jamesoafter you run it, tab over to the far and with tunable.07:15
Frank_Jamesoin there, probably everything almost will be diagnosed as bad in terms of power07:16
squelchif you install linux on a new computer you void warranty07:16
hateballcraptalk: that's not terrible, but capacity is what determines how much power you're able to store07:16
squelch:)07:16
Frank_Jamesoyou can use arrow key to go down the list, and to tune something, just use the space bar. If something causes issues, leave it as bad.07:16
Frank_Jamesobut I got my old thinkpad watching youtube videos to about 12 watts from 22 watts with that.07:16
craptalkFrank_Jameso, since i am new to use powertop, what kind of tuning that you mean? is it including disabling the wifi, screen brightness and alike?07:17
squelchthey need a new ubuntu laptop edition07:17
craptalkhateball, so it is normal?07:17
Frank_Jamesoit's more.. specific07:17
Frank_Jamesoit's not going to disable your wifi, it's going to do other things. you'll see though based on your computer. Each thing has a description of what it is07:17
craptalki was into ubuntu only, now i am using gnome which is more animative or something like that07:18
craptalkit should effect the battery life somehow07:18
hateballcraptalk: assuming it's not brand new, yes. my laptop is 5-6 years and battery is still at 100% tho. but it mostly runs on AC07:18
Frank_Jamesolike "autosuspend for USB device, runtimes for warious things could be more efficient07:18
Frank_JamesoI recommend trying it out to see. I think you'll be impressed.07:18
SmilexHey. I upgraded my ubuntu, and now I get dmesg messages printed all over when I boot. It even prints into the tty login thing07:18

Frank_Jamesothat's the weirdest thing I've found07:23
martian_jihj07:24
craptalki tried to manage the AMD GPU things07:24
Frank_Jamesocraptalk: if it's a laptop with battery you may be able to use the power statistics that is already installed to see the power use07:24
Frank_JamesoI'd try just doing everything but the mouse wake one, see what the difference is, and see if you hit any issues07:25
Frank_Jamesoif you do, then it may be a bit trickier than my experience was, but man it's insane what that can do for a battery.07:25
Frank_Jamesoand that's my general experience with linux. If you default it it can be bad but if you really get into it it'll blow windows out of the water.07:25
craptalkinsane you mean it saves alot the time?07:25
Frank_Jamesonot sure what alot the time means07:26
craptalki mean the battery lasting time to hold the activities while unplugged07:26
Frank_Jamesobut try checking the usage with everything off, then turn on all non mouse ones and check ita gain with a youtube video playing or somethngi07:26
Frank_Jamesoit's the biggest battery savings I have ever seen on anything in my life.07:27
Frank_Jamesoif a company sold this they'd be selling it for $1000 an install =/07:27
Frank_Jamesothese changes by themself won't survive a reboot, but this should help with that. http://askubuntu.com/questions/112705/how-do-i-make-powertop-changes-permanent07:28
Frank_Jamesoonce you have it all figured out in a way that doesn't hurt performance for you and saves a lot of battery life, do that part.07:29

geodb27People : hi !09:25
geodb27I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu LTS 16.04 on which I have only installed lxd (through the latest stable ppa). There is a dnsmasq process and I can't find how systemd launches it. Could someone help me on this ?09:28
tcorneliwhich package installs dnsmasq?09:31
geodb27tcorneli: This is what I am wondering. From what I've read here or there, ubuntu seems to ship it's own instance of dnsmasq. However, I have not installed NetworkManager.09:32
Dynetrekk1geodb27: apt-file?09:33
geodb27I've searched all files under /etc, /lib/systemd, /var/lib/systemd (grep -rHin dnsmasq in all these three places) and found nothing interresting concerning this process. When I issue a ps -elf, I can see a dnsmasq process, and it's parent is process number one...09:33
Dynetrekk1geodb27: looks like dnsmasq-base09:34
akikgeodb27: dnsmasq is started by the network-manager09:34
geodb27akik: I have not installed network-manager.09:35
tcorneliit is dnsmasq-base, which is a dependency for network-manager09:35
geodb27Dynetrekk1: It could be indeed, I don't know enough the internals of ubuntu.09:35
Dynetrekk1geodb27: apt-file search <filename> will reveal the package name, if nothing else09:35
Dynetrekk1then you could go on to find out which package requested that package (it's probably not something you installed manually)09:36
akikgeodb27: network-manager is installed by default09:36
Flannelgeodb27: `dnsmasq` package installs /etc/init.d/dnsmasq09:36
geodb27Flannel: I have no /etc/init.d/dnsmasq file.09:37
Flannelgeodb27: You're on 16.04?09:37
geodb27indeed.09:37
tcorneliexecuting dns-clean or restarting network-manager doesn't clear dns cache09:37
Flannelgeodb27: What version of dnsmasq-base and dnsmasq do you have installed?  (apt-cache policy dnsmasq dnsmasq-base)09:38
geodb27dnsamsq : Installed : none. dnsmasq-base : installed 2.75-1ubuntu0.16.04.109:38
Flannelis that because of the typo? or actually none?09:39
=== Guest12476 is now known as yacc
geodb27Well, that's great, at least I understand things better. Here is my real problem : this dnsmasq-base tries to serve dhcp leases to my lxc containers, but it doesn't do it as expected, since it doesn't respect what's in /etc/hosts file.09:40
geodb27Erf, actually none, a typo (I typed all and did not copy/paste).09:40
yaccAny idea where to complain about the GoogleTalkPlugin (I don't think that 200% CPU usage on an i7 while waiting for people to join a hangout is reasonable)09:41
Flannelgeodb27: ACtually, in 16.04, there's also a systemd thing.  I was looking at 14.04 originally (in 16.04, there's also an init.d file in addition to systemd)09:41
lord-ragnarockOkay I think I've figured it out. Upgrading must've really messed with my user's permissions, so I'm having to create a brand new user and start over. Not a problem :)09:42
Flannelgeodb27: But, not sure what is starting dnsmasq if you only have -base installed.09:42
lord-ragnarockErgo: I now have a functional desktop!09:42
scoopex_i have a strange dns resolving behavior - nslookup/host is capable to resolve a ip address, tools like rdesktop-vrdp and firefox cannot? http://pastebin.com/9RtMi3ya - do you have any hints for me ? (i am runnung ubuntu 16.10)09:42
Flannelgeodb27: Oh.  How about /lib/systend/system/dnsmasq.service?09:43
geodb27Flannel: as far as I can get it work as expected, that's allright.09:43
geodb27Let me check.09:43
FlannelOh wait, sorry, I'm back in dnsmasq not -base.09:43
geodb27Indeed... And there is no such file. Could it be that the launch of dnsmasq-base is hard-coded somewhere and that there is no-way to change it's configuration at all ?09:44
lord-ragnarockWell, now for my final problem. After the upgrade Ubuntu seems to think 1600x1200 is the only resolution available despite 1920x1080 having been done just before in 12.04. Any ideas? :P09:44
te_xHey, can will I update from 16.04.1 LTS to 16.04.2 LTS using just dist-upgrade?09:46
=== Spontex is now known as Guest47745
scoopex_Flannel: restarting of dnsmasq.service helps - but why? whats different between nslookup/host and dns resultion in applications09:46
Ben64te_x: yep09:46
te_xBen64: no extra steps needed then? How can I make sure that I keep using 16.04.1 if I don't want to update?09:47
Ben64te_x: why would you not want to update09:48
Flannelgeodb27: Libvert apparently uses dnsmasq as a "non-system daemon", according to the Readme.Debian in dnsmasq-base09:48
geodb27Hum... interesting Flannel. I've finally installed dnsmasq and I'm heading right now to try to configure it to suit my needs, if I can.09:49
Flannelgeodb27: that said, I know nothing about LXC.09:49
geodb27Flannel: as a matter of fact, there is not that much to know, according to my "problem". I only want to have a dnsmasq that reads /etc/hosts and gives correct ip adress and names to interfaces that ask for these on a bridge.09:51
obozorHi guys small problem. When im double click in some windows (nautilus) windows are minimalized... how to turn off it?09:51
tcornelirestarting dnsmasq doesn't help. dns records keep getting cached09:51

OerHeksresize on mounted filesystem? .. oh no..11:06
BluesKajmore info aleays helps11:06
akikGuest8: lvm uses a partition as its physical volume. you can see it in "sudo vgdisplay -v". maybe you need to enlarge that first11:06
akikGuest8: or another solution is to create another partition that you can add to your existing volume group as a new physical volume. it might be safer :)11:07
Guest8all space is already partitioned and used11:07
Guest8it's just lvm that doesn't understand11:07
akikGuest8: is your root partition in the lvm?11:08
Guest8yes, it seems so11:09
akikGuest8: the lvm sets the size limits for your logical partitions11:09
Guest8My /dev/sda3 is 1 TB (Linux LVM), it used to be 500 GB. LVM still thinks the /dev/mapper/stage--vg-root is 500 GB (which is mapped to sda3 as far as I understood)11:10
akikGuest8: how did you resize the linux lvm partition?11:10
Guest8recreated the partition using parted11:11
akikGuest8: there is quite high possibility for data loss if you don't do it right. did you follow some documentation?11:12
Guest8I just needed to move the end of the partition to the end of the volume (but keep the start where it used to be)11:12
akikGuest8: there is a command called pvresize which changes the lvm physical volume11:13
Guest8so in recreating the partition I effectively moved the end of the partition, and it worked out just fine11:13
Guest8yes, pvresize thinks I have 500 GB of space rather than 1 TB11:13
Guest8so I can't resize the partition to 1 TB there, says there is not enough space11:14
akikGuest8: maybe you can follow this guide (pvresize, lvresize, resize2fs) http://ryandoyle.net/posts/expanding-a-lvm-partition-to-fill-remaining-drive-space/11:14

LinuxNoobie65Can anybody point me to a step by step on signing my own kernel modules?16:59
Menzadorsvalcken: If apt isn't broken, you should do [ sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade ] before performing a release upgrade17:00
naccsvalcken: you first ensure that your 14.04 is fully up to date. By updatescript do you mean do-release-upgrade?17:00
nacchappyfr0gg: looking17:00
Tapmemerhello17:01
svalckennacc: yes. the current version is 14.04. apt is to old. all updates done. but the apt version is to old. i think i must update to 14.04.x befor i try to go 16.04. the kernel is 3.13 and during 14.04.2 the kernel and hes was added.17:03
naccsvalcken: updating 14.04 (dist-upgrade with apt-get or full-upgrade with apt) is sufficient to get to 14.04.5 in all software17:04
naccsvalcken: you are running an unsupported kernel, but that's orthogonal17:04
Tapmemerhello17:04
Tapmemeri have a problem17:04
Tapmemermy ubuntu mate on raspberry pi is not updating for some reason17:05
svalckennot realy. the kernel 3.13 is from 14.04 lts with support april 201917:05
naccsvalcken: iirc, do-release-upgrade's first task is to upgrade apt itself so that it's compatible17:05
naccsvalcken: err, yes, sorry, 3.13 is fine, i misread17:06
svalckenhere the message from upgrade script: The required dependency 'apt (>= 1.0.1ubuntu2.13)' is not installed.17:06
naccsvalcken: again, do you mean `do-release-upgrade`?17:07
naccsvalcken: then you are not fully up to date in trusty17:07
svalckeni think i need the upgrade to 14.04.4 or 5 befor i can do the do-release-upgrade17:07
naccsvalcken: as 1.0.1ubuntu2.17 is in trusty-updates17:07
naccsvalcken: as i've been saying, you *are* on 14.04.5 if you have kept your trusty up to date17:08
naccsvalcken: they are just respins of the ISO with HWE stacks17:08
naccsvalcken: but the repositories are the same17:08

nacchappyfr0gg: how did you add your PPAs?17:08
svalckenim not on .5. im am on 14.04 lts without subminor17:08
naccsvalcken: then you have not kept it up to date with `apt-get update; apt-get upgrade; apt-get dist-upgrade`17:09
naccsvalcken: either that or you don't understand how trusty works.17:09
ducassesvalcken: it doesn't matter, if you are up to date you will have a new enough apt17:09
naccsvalcken: where do you see 14.04 without any suffix?17:09
happyfr0ggSome of them I used apt and some I used Synaptic Package Manager.17:09
nacchappyfr0gg: add-apt-repository does the right thing for PPAs (at least in 16.04 and on), I've never used anythign else17:09
nacchappyfr0gg: it seems like those last two apt-key responses indicate those keys were added17:10
nacchappyfr0gg: you might need to do that for all the keys17:10
svalckenthe apt give me no updates. and yes without suffix17:10
ioriasvalcken, apt-cache policy apt     what tells you ?17:11
naccsvalcken: 'yes without suffix' does not tell me *where* you see this.17:11
happyfr0ggnacc, I have followed installation procedures from Launchpad.17:11
=== lethu__ is now known as lethu
happyfr0ggWhat string of command(s) could I type in to automate each of the supposedly missing GPG Pub keys? I don't want to do each of them individually. That is tedious.17:13
svalckenin the lsb_release file, lsb_release command, and a Ubuntu Webside with Release details give me the same information, 14.04 LTS has Kernel 3.13. 14.04.2 and above adds HES support and will not automatic update.17:13
naccsvalcken: the latter is misunderstanding of what that page says on your part17:13
naccsvalcken: please provide the above `apt-cache policy apt` output17:14
naccsvalcken: the HWE *kernel* does not get update after 14.04.5 releases17:14
naccsvalcken: the 14.04.2 HWE kernel17:14
OerHekshappyfr0gg, as i wrote hours back::  i would clean the lists and reload them again, mucho faster >>>  sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade17:14
OerHeksthe keys are there, and the lists are malformed i guess17:15
naccsvalcken: but 14.04.2 non-HWE-kernel, non-HWE-X all goes through the same repositories as every 14.04.* (including 14.04.0)17:15
svalckenapt-cache policy says current installed 1.0.1ubuntu2. and older version 0.9.9 also avail but not installed17:15
happyfr0ggOerHeks, does ' sudo apt-get upgrade ' upgrade my 14.04 to 16.04?17:15

HarisI want to reinstall the same pkgs, in order to have a consistent box .. for the present. I can work up the upgrade start of next week18:10
chrismlnacc thanks18:10
Harisby then I can have the outbound traffic enabled for this box. which will help me download and install pkgs on auto18:11
ducasseHaris: did you simply try another mirror?18:12
Haris?18:12
thesebDo systemd scripts NEED an "After=" line in the [Unit] section and/or a "WantedBy=" line in the [Install] section?  (I'm trying to make the simplest generic template for custom scripts18:12
Harislet me try18:12
naccHaris: the issue is going to be the mirrors don't keep all the old pacakges18:12
HarisI'v tried 2 mirrors till now18:12
naccHaris: no one wants anyone to install an insecure package18:12
Harisits outgoing port 80 traffic for this box. its blocked18:12
naccHaris: and since the archive doesn't advertise that version, it won't find it18:13
naccHaris: e.g. on http://92.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/apache2/ there is no 4.518:13
Harishmm18:13
naccHaris: there is 4 and 4.1318:13
naccHaris: as those are the two supported versions18:13
naccHaris: also if the mirror kept every old version, the mirrors would be enormouse18:14
naccs/e//18:14
Hariswell, centos keeps pkgs in a directory on a mirror. ubuntu doesn't have publicly browsable pkg list. its just downloadable18:14
naccHaris: that's FUD18:14
naccHaris: you can browse any mirror if you want18:14
naccHaris: I just did18:14
ioriatheseb, no, it's not required, but depends on your script18:14
Harishmm18:14
HarisI can browse http://mirrors.nayatel.com/centos/7.3.1611/os/x86_64/Packages/18:14
HarisI don't know how to browse pkgs for 14.04.218:15
naccHaris: 14.04.2 isn't really a thing in that sense18:15
Harishmm18:15
k1lHaris: the 14.04.2 or 14.04.3 are like servicepacks on windows.18:15
nacck1l: i feel like htat should also be made into a FAQ :)18:16
k1lif you update 14.04 the system will become 14.04.3 etc automatically18:16
Harishmm18:16
naccHaris: it's just a point in time snapshot of the archive basically18:16
naccHaris: in any case, you can browse the mirror you are using, I just showed you the apache2 diretory, for instance18:17
Harisyep. checking it out18:17
Harismaking a list of pkgs to download18:17
k1lif you like a better search, have a look at packages.ubuntu.com18:17
Harisis this version ok ? --> http://92.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-bin_2.4.7-1ubuntu4.13_amd64.deb18:18
Harishmm18:18
k1lHaris: why dont you use apt to get the supported version?18:18
Harisbecause apt can't do outgoing port 80 connections from this box18:19
Harisat present18:19
Harisits nearly midnight here18:19
naccHaris: right but the above is http as well18:19
naccHaris: so presumably you're going to download locally and scp18:19
naccHaris: at which point, use apt to download locally18:19
HarisI'm going to download that on my box and then scp to the target machine18:19
stevessssso.. the big reason I like Xorg and dont want mir to replace it and cause all gnome libraries to be compiled without X support is that if I run ubuntu in a container on windows or mac18:20

BrieIs this where I can talk about problems with Ubuntu?18:20
stevessssand graphical apps loose X compatibility, then Xming and Xquartz dont help me run graphical apps anymore18:20
ducassestevessss: we went through this earlier, i explained it to you18:21
naccHaris: tbh, it's pretty rude to ome to a volunteer channel and then complain about how long it's taking to get something fixed that sounds like your job. You can use the latest version from the mirror(s) and it should be fine. But you may end up needing to update dependencies, etc.18:21
stevessssso ubuntu is never getting rid of X right?18:21
naccBrie: yes18:21
naccBrie: where problems are specific issues, not general complaints :)18:21
stevessssmaybe it wont be default.. but it will always be 100% supported18:21
ducassestevessss: not in many years yet18:21
OerHeksstevessss, no, xorg should be replaced. Mir it is :-D18:21
BrieOkay, well I play alot of Steam. Today though it didnt open. I tried opening many times and it "updates" and then just vanishes. I ran Steam from terminal and got this http://pastebin.com/wfYapqZP18:22
naccstevessss: also this isn't a suport topic, it doesn't feel like -- it's a bit of a rant/offtopic18:22
guest123hello.. every time i turn on the computer i get some error messages about a non installed program.. i'm pretti sure it's an older log and i even need this update (windows font or someting even).. ho I delete the error logs? i kann't find it18:22
HarisI'm sorry for being or sounding rude. I'm just trying to get things done in a consistent way. and then figure out to make all things good at a later time18:22
k1lstevessss: you know that there is a movement away from x not matter of mir, right?18:22
stevessssare their mir servers for osx and windows that ubuntu-vm apps can connect to?18:22
naccHaris: the problem is, because the client's system is so out of date, it's hard to reproduce it easily18:22
Harisyep18:23
ducassestevessss: no, it doesn't work like that. besides, mir is far from ready18:23
Hariswe don't usually get enough time to do the dev work. its hard to plan for upgrades or migrations on our own time after COB18:23
HarisI can't take the box down for extended periods, while there's more than a dozen guys who need to work on it18:24
naccBrie: where did you get steam from?18:24
naccHaris: security updates, in and of themselves, don't necessarily require reboots (except the kernel ones)18:24
HarisI can't afford to have an inconsistent box or be stuck in searching for deps18:24
naccHaris: well, ther eare others too18:24
Harison manual18:24
naccHaris: but you can afford to be readily hackable?18:24

naccHaris: and if that is really their position, they should pay out the tooth, because as of right now, they're not even supported by Canonical -- they are running a zombie machine effectively18:25
BrieI got Steam from the Steam website itself18:25
HarisI'll conceit that point for now18:25
BrieIt worked fine until today18:25
stevesssswill mir support full remote apps before Xorg is removed from ubuntu?18:25
naccBrie: ah, you might need to ask steam then18:25
Harisif it means to get the work done18:25
ducassestevessss: as i've said before, you're worrying about things that are a long way18:25
BrieOh...18:25
naccBrie: we an only really support the ubuntu packaged steam (in the partner repo)18:25
HarisI can manage the short term security implication(s)18:25
BrieAlso Open Broadcaster Software won't open either, could this be related? Can a reboot fix this?18:25
k1lstevessss: there is xmir, for running x only apps, yes. but programs will move away from x too18:26
naccHaris: I don't think you really can, but that's a choice you get to make18:26
stevessssyeah.. so if programs move away from X.. can I still use them remote without X?18:26
naccHaris: in any case, you will need to find an 'old' mirror of trusty or you'll be forced to upgrade to the latest security release18:26
naccHaris: btw, why are you doing this? did something go wrong?18:26
k1lstevessss: remote? you mean with ssh forward?18:26

dachyHi guys.. i need a quick help with setting up my firewall. I am using ufw, and trying to open a port for bittorrent. I ran  ufw allow from any to any port 51413 and I can see by using nmap on a machine external to my network that the port is in state "filtered". If I disable ufw entirely, the nmap shows the port in state "open". Any idea what is wrong here?22:12
dachyMy ufw rules look like this: http://pastebin.com/uhR5sYc022:13
mcrtdachy: your router is probably filtering the traffic22:15
=== Guest_ is now known as oranged
dachymcrt: there is no router involved.. just my ubuntu machine plugged into the internet22:16
mcrtdachy: plugged in how?22:17
df00zHey, um, im trying to pair a bluetooth serial module.  I can use it as root.  added myself to dialout.  bluetooth.service keeps creating new /dev/rfcomm# devices22:17
dachymcrt: with a cable22:17
mcrtdachy: who provides the internet access?22:18
dachymcrt: i've a fibre->ethernet box on my wall, and I get an IP address via DHCP but ots always the same one, and its publicly accessible22:18
mcrtdachy: that box might still do traffic filtering. try to disable the firewall and see what happens22:20
skinuxIs it possible to store things on portable drive, but still have it managed by apt and accessible as if it were installed onto Ubuntu's primary partition?22:20
dachymcrt: as mentioned above, if i disable ufw, it works. if i enable ufw, it doesnt work22:20
mcrtdachy: ah right, sorry22:21
dachyby "doesnt work" i mean that nmap sees the port in state "filtered"22:21
mcrtdachy: try to remove the DENY IN rule for eth022:23
mcrtdachy: if the policy for the input chain is DROP you wont need it anyway22:24
dachymcrt: that's kinda what makes the firewall work though22:24
dachymcrt: how do i verify what the policy for the input chain is, that sounds like complicated iptables talk22:24
wedgiedachy: wouldn't the deny rule need to be *after* the rule that allows 51413?22:24
dachywedgie: that might be something, are these sorted ? :)22:25
wedgiethe rule for 443 is at the top. Does 443 work?22:25
mcrtif the policy for the INPUT chain is DROP you do not need such additional rules.. (speaking in iptables terms)22:25
dachywedgie: yes, it does22:25
wedgiedachy: disclaimer: UFW confuses the heck out of me. For being the "Uncomplicated FireWall" it sure is complicated.22:26
dachywedgie: its quite a bit less scary than iptables though :)22:26
wedgielol, if you say so22:26
mcrtdachy: 'iptables -L -n'22:27
dachyHEY, it works :)22:27
dachywedgie: nice one, reordering the rules worked :)22:28
wedgiedachy: typically with these things rules are evaluated in order and the action is taken on the first match.22:28
wedgieso an allow after a deny that also matches the traffic in question will never be reached22:28
mcrtremoving the rule would have sufficed, now you have rules for double dropping the traffic and you need to worry about the correct order etc.22:28
wedgiemcrt: personally I like having explicit rules like that at the end, even if it is the default. Increases readability and reduces surprises, IMHO22:29
dachywedgie: great. Does this look ok then: http://pastebin.com/VgtfJpb  ?22:29
wedgiedachy: link not working for me22:30
dachyhttp://pastebin.com/VgtfJpba22:30
mcrtwedgie: sure, i guess you can do that too22:31

tgm4883Mitchy: what is your end goal. eg. What are you trying to solve by refreshing a web page every 5 minutes?23:26
Mitchymy goal is that the page gets refreshed every few minutes because its not automated , and i am not behind the desk all the time ( its a newsfeed )23:32
k1lMitchy: if you dont want a webbrowser for that, that sounds like you want something like a rss feed/reader23:36
pavlosMitchy, do you view the page as index.html or via a browser?23:36
Mitchyhmm i try to detaul te thing,   the webpage (not made by me) people make artikels on it the RSS feed of that page is somehow connected to twitter, but twitter seems not auto refresh the rss feed, so we do it manual.  the link we hit every few minutes or so , is a php script that refreshes the rss feed23:39
