[05:27] Everyone safe? [09:03] morning boys and girls. [09:04] g'day [09:06] morning [09:07] Morning all === chrisccoulson_ is now known as chrisccoulson [09:48] Good morning all! Happy Thursday, and happy Near Miss Day! 😃 ☄ [09:53] JamesTait: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_4PlM85NJo [09:55] Ooof, I think Near Miss Day is a little bit on the nose, condering yesterday's attacks [12:44] quiet round here nowadays. has sl4ck meant that people are using irc less? [12:44] certainly happened here [12:51] I never really start conversations [12:51] Unless you now wish for me to talk about going to the Power Rangers on Sunday [12:51] because I'm sure excited about that [13:00] SuperMatt: I can tell, next you'll be saying that the kids made you be we know it is the other way round ;) [13:00] I don't have kids [13:00] I'm just a lifelong power rangers fan [13:00] see [13:01] SuperMatt: someone had to be [13:01] :D [13:01] As a child I bonded with others over power rangers. It was amazing [13:02] SuperMatt: yes then they got lives and lived happily every after ;) [13:03] LIES! [13:03] SuperMatt: to be fair the effects in it look much better....I'm still waiting for the Thundercats live action movie myself though :D [13:03] Oh gosh yes, that would be amazing [13:04] Though the question is always, who should play Cheetara? [13:06] SuperMatt: Milla Jochovich, Scarlett Johansen or Summer Glau [13:07] always see Cheetara as being quite tall, which Johansen and Glau are not. Jochovich would be good [13:07] possibly jennifer garner [13:07] +I [13:07] *Jovovich [13:08] SuperMatt: thinking face shapes more than height they can put them on ramps nowadays [13:09] I guess if I'm thinking about someone who runs fast, I don't think of Scarlett Johasson [13:09] SuperMatt: oh Kate Beckinsale [13:10] SuperMatt: have you not seen in ghost in the shell, avengers etc running is all she does ;) [13:11] I know, but she doesn't have the body of a sprinter. Her figure just isn't cheeta-eque. [13:11] She's an extremely attractive woman, but I don't think she'd be right for the role [13:11] and this is all just speculation [13:12] SuperMatt: yeah but if we build it they will come.......damn wrong film [14:04] * diddledan wonders if his network cards will arrive today [14:04] * diddledan anticipates [14:04] so excite [14:04] fibre optic for the first time in my life! [14:07] never used optical cables? :) [14:07] nope [14:07] the closest I've been so far is a spaceship lamp [14:08] one of these jobbies: https://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lZkz_I0ZT8c/TVFqkqKIfdI/AAAAAAAAZ_s/pmSCk12gTCU/s1600/fibre_optic_lamp.jpg [14:09] i'd be concerned at the power draw for 10GbE in the home, hrmm [14:09] the power is worse with 10GBASE-T than fibre [14:11] o0 [14:11] i'd be interested in seeing some data on that, anyways [14:11] yup [14:11] I nead a meter === twinsen is now known as twinsenx [14:22] had an asbestos inspector a short while ago [14:23] I wonder if I have any, and how troublesome it'll be to remove [14:25] very! [14:25] it'd be a full move out affair if you did i'd imagine [14:30] :-( [14:30] they might nick me PC! [14:32] diddledan: Asbestos is a pain in the arse big time, really would be out of this house for 24 hours minimum [14:33] diddledan: and all your transceivers! [14:34] :-o [14:34] all both of them [14:34] and my nice aqua fibre cable! [14:35] I got my transceivers from these guys: http://www.fs.com/ they were brilliant [14:35] excellent hand-holding, checked with me what I'm putting them into to ensure they sent me compatible ones [14:36] excellent [14:37] *would buy again* [14:37] ooh it would've been neat to get a premade length of fiber to get down to the end-of-garden building at my clients [14:37] we had his electrician lay two outdoor spec cat5e or 6, but only one works [14:38] runs along the top of a wall inside PVC tubing [14:59] what's the betting the leccy didn't know how to wire the plug/socket on each end? :-p [15:10] oh we don't even let him attempt, leave all the termination to me [15:11] i like my 'B' wiring scheme anyway! [19:15] omg, I had completely forgotten about this show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0s6nyrQxgw [19:38] diddledan: i have completed my best work to-date - https://www.dropbox.com/s/n3b8nknk2riamrr/IMG_20170323_193116.jpg?dl=0 [19:39] kittyphone! [19:42] so, I managed to recover my raid array, \o/ [19:43] Now the only question is to figure out what on earth happened [19:43] Azelphur: did you manage to finish the rebalance? [19:43] diddledan: no [19:44] I managed to bring the array back to a state before the grow [19:44] :-( [19:44] at least you got your data back [19:44] so everything is fine, all my data is good [19:44] yea [19:44] now. backup before trying again :-) [19:44] Sure, you got somewhere I can dump 13TB? [19:44] Amazon S3? [19:44] haha, maybe [19:44] I'm not sure on costing though [19:45] although on my upload, it'll take about 3 months to upload. [19:46] dang. good point [19:46] I only have a 1TB cap anyway so I couldn't have done it if I had the same requirement [19:47] essentially the sequence of events has been, mdadm ejected bad drive from array (don't know why), bought new replacement. Tested bad drive with badblocks. Bad drive did 3 passes with no errors, no reallocated sectors, nothing in dmesg. Tried to grow array onto bad drive, mdadm sat at rebuilding 0% and didn't even start rebuilding. Attempted solutions resulted in hard crashing the machine, I then had to recreate the array with --assume [19:47] -clean [19:47] and I'm now running badblocks again on the bad drive, and it's still passing [19:47] so...yea, this is odd. [19:48] drive is fine, unless you want to add it to a raid array, in which case it is broken. [19:49] and this is why hardware controllers can be nice ;D [19:49] why? I feel like if I had a hardware controller in the situation I am now, I would have lost my data [19:49] what are the disks? any cheap crappy models like WD green? [19:49] yea, cheapo drives, USB shucks [19:49] well no you wouldn't have had it threatened in the first place [19:50] also ugh at badblocks, way to stress a disk in question [19:50] daftykins: STEP AWAY FROM THE SMART REPORT! [19:50] 8D [19:51] daftykins: I want to stress it, if it fails, I will replace it. [19:51] I swear disks are like schroedinger's cat. both alive and dead until daftykins looks at the smart report at which point it is de facto dead [19:52] --e [19:53] pff [19:53] Schrodinger? (no e) [19:53] Azelphur: so what are they? [19:53] I can't write an umlaut in Windows [19:53] well I might be able to, but I don't know how [19:54] daftykins: https://dpaste.de/duXu [19:54] sdg is "bad drive" [19:54] seagate? [19:54] yep [19:54] yeah, it's dead :-p [19:55] lol [19:55] I don't stereotype often, but when I do, it's about seagate disks [19:59] XD [19:59] and you're mixing them too? [20:01] I think mixed drives are a good thing, it prevents manufacturing faults from taking out a bunch of drives simultaniously [20:02] yes that's a nice theory, shame you chose seagate craptastic ones [20:03] welp you gotta start with the basics if the SMART is really clean, cable + SATA controller [20:03] they aren't actually craptastic, the whole seagate thing stems from one single line of 3TB drives, beyond that one product line they actually have similar failure rates to other brands [20:04] no, it stems from the fact they're not even willing to put more than a 2 year warranty on their own drives. [20:04] that tells you all you need to know about Seagate. [20:04] heh [20:04] I prefer the Toshibas for that reason, you'll notice most of my array is comprised of them :) [20:05] they're not HAMR drives are they? [20:05] no idea what that is [20:06] "As of 2016, no hard disks using HAMR are currently on the market" according to wikipedia [20:06] so um...wat? [20:06] I hear good things about HGST drives [20:06] heat assisted magnetic recording [20:06] they just trying to stop HAMR TIME [20:06] nevermind i'm thinking of the tech that has to rewrite neighbouring tracks on write [20:07] shingled? [20:07] that sounds like the one [20:10] SMR or so
