niggardhi pals, xorg<>nvidia driver troubles are back again.11:08
luke_66Hi Everyone11:09
efgafg11:09
luke_66a question about LibreOffice used in headless mode11:09
niggardHow to figure out what driver is used? 'inxi -Gxx' says: 'Display Server: X.org 1.18.4 drivers: nvidia (unloaded: fbdev,vesa,nouveau)'11:09
efgyjvhhkk11:10
niggardyet /etc/X11/xorg.conf has 'Driver "vesa"' line11:10
efghi11:10
hateballniggard: unless you are doing manual tweaks, you dont need to have a xorg.conf at all11:11
luke_66I'm trying to convert a docx file to pdf using LibreOffice headless. I started the server in listening mode, cause it seems the way to go to use it concurrently and for performance benefits (I'm planning to use it in a web application) as:11:11
luke_66libreoffice --headless --accept="socket,host=localhost,port=9997,tcpNoDelay=1;urp" --nodefault --nofirststartwizard --nolockcheck --nologo --norestore --invisible11:11

luke_66libreoffice --headless --convert-to pdf --infilter="Microsoft Word 2007/2010/2013 XML" LaP1.docx11:11

niggardbirne: apt-cache search google calendar11:16
birneokay, thanks11:17
niggardBluesKaj: hey, so how did you figure out I'm using nouveau?11:20
neredsenvyI started a process with nohup ./update.sh & this calls multiple other commands is there a way I can kill all the processes by nohup ?11:21
neredsenvyWith one command11:21
kbobpgrep nohup | xargs kill -911:23
neredsenvykbob: problem is child processes are still running I would also need to kill all which have artisan and update.sh in their name11:26
BluesKajniggard, well, perhaps not since it shows unloaded, therefor you must be using the nvidia proprietary which doesn't show up ..I have almost the out put from inxi Gxx , my nvidia-340 driver isn't listed altho it shows with,  glxinfo | grep OpenGL11:26
neredsenvypgrep 'artisan' | kill -9 should also work right ?11:26
BluesKajniggard, almost the same11:27
Ben64neredsenvy: you can't use kill like that11:27
niggardBluesKaj: how it doesn't show up if it says 'drivers: nvidia' ?11:28
kbobneredsenvy: now I will not read the man for you but I think something like "nohup | artisan | update"11:28
neredsenvyBen64: How can I kill all processes under ps -ef which contain either of those two words in their name11:28
neredsenvyhm11:29
niggardoh, you mean the version doesn't show up11:29
niggardBluesKaj: well, I have nvidia driver version 340.102, I guess it is used then11:29
BluesKajniggard, that's from your xorg file, not from,  glxinfo | grep OpenGL, which command will show the loaded driver11:30
niggarddoes xorg have its own driver?11:30
akikneredsenvy: pkill accepts a process name pattern such as 'artisan|update.sh'11:30
neredsenvyI was missing -f works now11:30
neredsenvypgrep -f update.sh | xargs kill -911:30
BluesKajniggard, yes11:30
niggardBluesKaj: do you have tearing?11:31
BluesKajniggard, no tearing11:31
niggardBluesKaj: do you have 2 gpus as well?11:31
BluesKajyes, but i have the bios seup to use just one, niggard11:32
niggarddidn't know that can be done from bios11:32
niggardBluesKaj: what driver does your xorg use?11:32
BluesKajniggard, with nvidia you use nvidia-xconfig not xorg11:34
niggardit creates config file for xorg and last time I used it - I had troubles with monitors not showing image11:35
BluesKajniggard, I'm not familiar with multiple monitor setups11:37
niggardoh11:37
niggardwell, I guess I'll have to re-try nvidia-xconfig11:38

ubottuThe kernel team supply continuous mainline kernel builds which can be useful for tracking down issues or testing recent changes in the Linux kernel. More information is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds17:29
naccgeneric: `apt-get install linux-source` iirc17:29
genii...there we go17:29
naccgeneric: but that is the ubuntu kernel, to be clear, not the upstream kernel17:29
genericnacc: are there patches for the upstream ?17:31
naccgeneric: not sure what you mean?17:31
genericnacc: are these the same sources ..17:31
naccgeneric: how much do you know about kernel development?17:32

naccgeneric: as once you do that, you then ahve to maintain security fixes for your kernel17:38
potatoes_howdy folks, I'm having an issue with ubuntu 16.04 and startup, it would appear that at startup ubuntu is installing automatic upgrades and such, i have tried disabling it with no success.17:38

genericducasse: if i use apt-get source i should end up with almost the same thing I run now ..17:39
naccpotatoes_: i mean, one file is insufficient , you need to see the whole state17:39
naccgeneric: which will be out of date in a few days17:39
pvl1it seems as though, even with -lpthread my gcc isnt finding semaphore.h, and it exists in the paths that are searched by gcc17:40
potatoes_nacc: that makes sense17:40
potatoes_nacc: so same cat to diff files17:40
potatoes_i'll try dat17:40
naccpvl1: -lpthread doesnt find headers17:40
naccpvl1: that findds a library to link against17:40

pvl1and semaphore isnt part of it?17:41
genericnacc: ? i'm running 4.4 now .. we're at 4.1017:41
naccpvl1: semaphore.h is a header file, not a library17:41
naccpvl1: you are confusing -l and -I17:41
naccpvl1: and presumably compile-time versus link-time17:41
pvl1ah i see. but honestly, more than likely, im missing the library then17:41
pvl1im on an arm toy17:41
naccpvl1: no, you're missing the headers if you are getting an error referring to semaphore.h17:42
pvl1but i can find the file17:42
naccgeneric: "we"17:42
pvl1and read it17:42
naccgeneric: who is "we"?17:42
naccpvl1: doesn't mean the compiler can?17:42
genericnacc: kernel.org17:42
naccgeneric: right, you don't want to run a mainline kernel in production17:42
naccgeneric: you want to run a stable supported kernel17:42
naccgeneric: which is what you have17:43
genericnacc: 4.10 is stable ..17:43
pvl1nacc: hm... how do i test for this, and ensure it can find it?17:43

moracabanas1@nacc check this https://www.reddit.com/r/linux4noobs/comments/60meml/custom_kernel_ubuntu_1604_live_cd_surface_pro_4/20:51
Jan\\Jordan_U: so now I'm trying to manually install grub20:51
naccmoracabanas1: did you read the link?20:51
Jordan_UJan\\: Then you need to mount the filesystem containing /boot/ and provide the path to that /boot/ directory as the value of --boot-directory (you can get rid of --recheck and --no-floppy, and I would recommend --boot-directory rather than --root-directory as the semantics are easier to get right).20:52
moracabanas1yes, you don't know how much I appreciate your help20:52
naccmoracabanas1: having .debs already means you don't need to build anything20:52
moracabanas1@nacc yes, you don't know how much I appreciate your help20:52
naccmoracabanas1: just make a custom USB using those guide(s)20:52
moracabanas1@nacc I will try. I am here because the gide is tremendous IT lv.80 hard for me. Very tecnical20:53
Jordan_UJan\\: Please pastebin the output of "sudo parted -l", "mount", and "sudo blkid".20:53
Jan\\Jordan_U: it says      unrecognized option --boot-directory=/mnt20:53

ALFAmora carnagione scura formosa20:55
Jordan_UJan\\: Then you have accidentally installed grub-legacy. The package "grub" in Ubuntu is actually grub legacy and replaces grub2. grub2 is what you should be using.20:56

Jan\\i installed grub220:58
naccgenii: it's been removed in 17.04 (apparently)20:58
Jordan_UJan\\: I'm still waiting for the output of "mount" and "sudo blkid".20:58
glitchdok im pulling my hair out over here...how can i disable pinch to zoom?21:00
PipeItToDevNullglitchd, you may want to see if it is listed under a property of xinput for the device21:03
Jan\\ok I managed to boot into grub, how do I load the desktop ?21:04
Jan\\and auto load it and auto login21:04
Jan\\its the minimal bash grub21:05
glitchdPipeItToDevNull, not even sure how to do that..21:05
PipeItToDevNullglitchd, "xinput" then find your pointer device and run "xinput list-props <device ID>"21:06
glitchdPipeItToDevNull, theres is no listing for zoom in what it printed out21:08
PipeItToDevNullglitchd, Welp, that is all I got21:08

VolundI finally got my line in working21:24
Jordan_UJan\\: You probably didn't run the correct grub-install command. Please post the output I requested (of "mount" and "sudo blkid").21:24
VolundBUT21:24
Volundthere's this irritating buzz/static in the background. I don't get that when running Windows. I wonder how I can cut it out...21:25
Jordan_UJan\\: (You'll need to boot back into the LiveCD/USB to get that output).21:27
Jordan_UJan\\: Importantly, --boot-directory= needs to point to the boot directory, not the root directory.21:31

hafernacc, yes manytime21:33
nacchafer: `ssh -vvv` will help you see why, probably21:33

naccginseng0: what .conf files?21:38

hafernacc, I using putty aloso doesn't work same error21:39
nacchafer: it seems weird21:39
nacchafer: oh you're not on ubuntu?21:39
ginseng0for example /home/<user>/.config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml nacc21:39
nacchafer: i don't know why you'd use putty if you're on ubuntu21:39

giangmay be my usb was broken ?21:42
gianghow can i check if my usb is broken  ?21:42
schandergiang: Try fdisk21:44
ginseng0so when I open this .conf at /home/<user>/.config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml, it shows a completely blank contents in both leafpad and gedit. Any reason why this could be happening? I've tried other system conf files before and same problem21:44
k1lginseng0: does it work in nano?21:45
ginseng0ill try k1l, gimme a sec21:46
ginseng0k1l, it still doesn't work in nano. using sudo btw21:46
k1lginseng0: and you know, that you need to replace the "<user>" with your actual user name on that system and that this user needs to be logged into openbox once?21:47
ginseng0I know ofc21:47
ginseng0the file opens fine, it's just blank when it shouldnt be21:47
k1lcan you show "ls -al .config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml"21:47
k1lginseng0: opening a file that doesnt exist yet does open blank because the editor creates it.21:47
ginseng01sec k1l21:47
k1lginseng0: and you should never use sudo on your own users home folder.21:48
Jan\\I reinstalled with networking and the grub issue seems to have been patched not I booted from HDD without issues21:48
Jan\\now*21:48
k1lginseng0: looking at lubuntu the file should be named "~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml" anyway.21:49
ginseng0thank you k1l, I'm quite new and didn't realise there was a different name for lubuntu21:49
k1lginseng0: "ls -al ~/.config/openbox/" that will list the config files21:49
ginseng0completely fixed ty :)21:50
Kiickinacc it seems like everything is working now after I installed Ubuntu 14.04.1 and updated everything. applied the driver and no errors yet. No screen tear. So I guess everything is working as good as it can. Still kinda stuttery/laggy compared to Windows 10 with this machine but good enough21:51
naccKiicki: ah ok, i'm sorry the downgrade path didn't quite work21:55

rizonzanyone creating a local mirror using ubumirror and only for amd64 ?23:29
g-riderhey guys, dumb question is the notion of kernel flavours still present for the 14 and 16 release train?23:31
naccg-rider: what were kernel flavours?23:31
g-riderhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Dev/Flavours23:31
naccg-rider: i see generic, lowlatency, virtual23:32
naccg-rider: on 17.04 (and i think 16.04++23:32
nacc*16.04+23:32
g-riderneed something for 14.0423:32
g-riderwas looking for trusty23:32
naccg-rider: those probably existed for 14.04 too23:32
g-riderspecifically haswell instruction set optimized23:32
naccg-rider: which flavour were you looking for?23:32
naccg-rider: that doesn't exist anywhere23:32
g-rider14.04LTS, haswell optimized but it might not exist23:33
naccg-rider: none of the intel compatible ones were built for a specific cpu23:33
g-riderreally trying not to have to compile cuz scale...23:33
naccg-rider: i doubt you'd see that big of a difference where it would be worht the hassle23:33
g-riderehh23:33
g-rideryeah in general no23:33
g-riderbut I have some custom code that's using haswell instruction set that see's 10~15% benefit23:34
naccg-rider: in any case, i think you misunderstood what the flavours for23:34
g-rideroff the shelf stuff probably wouldn't matter23:34
naccg-rider: in the kernel?23:34
g-riderI think that's my other take away. Flavours are architecture specific for a manufacturer23:34
g-riderthey don't seem to go down the rabbit hole of each manufacturers architecture23:34
naccg-rider: or for a use-case (e.g., cloud)23:35
naccg-rider: no, taht would be insane and not useful23:35
naccg-rider: you can still access archtiecture-specific instructions in your code23:35
naccg-rider: or are you writing a kernel module?23:35
g-rideryeah I saw ec2 optimized23:35
naccg-rider: can you answer the question?23:36
g-ridernot writing any kernel modules.23:36
naccg-rider: then you don't need a custom kernel, afaict23:37
g-ridertrying to pull specific instruction set it calls23:37
naccg-rider: just use the write compile-flags?23:37
nacc*right23:37
naccg-rider: and/or assembly if you care about the instructions used23:37
g-rideryeah so maybe I'm misunderstanding something, when we make menuconfig and compile for a specific platform23:37
g-riderhow does that change access to the instruction set from an application perspective23:38
naccg-rider: that does tuning of the kernel23:38
naccg-rider: it doesn't.23:38
naccg-rider: the instruction set for applications is determined (broadly) by the compiler flags23:38
g-riderI guess this would be dependent on what the software is doing but I suppose you could gcc your app with the flags you care about to optimize only the code23:39
g-riderand see some benefit, maybe not the full benefit of the tuned kernel. that is of course if I'm understanding this correctly23:39
naccg-rider: i seriously doubt you are that kernel dependent23:40
naccg-rider: unless the instructions you care about are in a syscall that gets hyper-optimized by the .config setting23:40
naccg-rider: but that's unlikely23:40
g-riderwell I have some baseline data from the app guys23:40
g-riderthat show the performance increase, which I too found hard to believe23:40
Ben64i think you're interpreting it incorrectly23:40
g-riderwanted to see if I had an easier way from an ops perspective to support, but I can dig into what the app is actually doing23:41
naccg-rider: if they are seeing some change by changing their code -- i don't understand what that has to do with the kernel?23:41
fribi just accidentally formatted my boot partition. what should I do?23:41
g-ridernacc -- performance change was based on kernel recompile for haswell, no code change23:41
g-riderBen64 -- What's the proper interpretation?23:42
Ben64well i can't see the data you're referring to, so who knows23:42
naccg-rider: what .config option?23:42
g-riderBen64 -- Agreed I don't have enough data to dive into the details, was looking for a quick win with the flavours.23:43
g-ridernacc -- standby23:43
Ben64g-rider: what you're suggesting isn't logical though23:44
g-riderBen64 which suggestion in particular, that the code runs faster on a haswell optimized kernel, or the kernel flavours quesiton?23:44
Ben64"haswell optimized kernel"23:44
fribhow can I restore my EFI partition that I accidentally deleted?23:45
g-riderBen64 which specific assertion? that the app ran faster on the haswell optimized kernel or just the term 'haswell optimized kernel'23:46
Ben64that such a thing exists23:46
g-riderBen64 oh shit that's bad on my part23:47
g-riderBen64 I'm normally pretty good about verifying facts before I speak on them, but I took what the dev said at face value.23:48
g-riderand I'm looking at make menuconfig I don't see anything haswell oriented at all23:51
naccg-rider: correct, hence why i asked23:51
