_furycd001Used ubuntu netinstall to create a minimal xubuntu setup on my laptop. Wifi runs slow even though I'm pretty close to the router. Any ideas on how to speed up internet ??12:39
_furycd001Internet runs slow on normal ubuntu/xubuntu installs also. Laptop is an early 2009 macbook.12:40

ericzhillI've got an old Toshiba laptop that Xubuntu 32-bit installs and runs fine on.  The 64-bit live USB try-before-install works great, but installed 64-bit won't boot with a failure to find init.  Any thoughts?13:44
pmjdebruijnericzhill: sounds very funky13:59
pmjdebruijnboth on BIOS/CSM not UEFI?13:59
ericzhillYes, machine is too old for UEFI.13:59
pmjdebruijndoes it properly support 64bit?14:00
pmjdebruijnis there anything like dual boot going on, that might complicate things?14:00
ericzhillThe processor datasheet says it supports 64-bit, but I'm not sure how to tell.  The live 64-bit works great.14:00
pmjdebruijnwell if the live cd works, it should be fine I guess14:01
pmjdebruijnbut then again, do you have anything like dual boot?14:01
ericzhillNo dual-boot.  I've flattened and reinstalled about 6 times, with and without LVM to see if that made a difference.14:01
pmjdebruijndid you reformat the partition before reinstalling?14:01
pmjdebruijnoh14:01
ericzhillYes, wiped the partition clean and repartitioned.  No luck.14:01
pmjdebruijnwith simple MBR paritioning?14:01
ericzhillI'm not sure what the "automatic" does, but I manually tried GPT and MBR partitioning with the same results.14:02
pmjdebruijnsomething like sda1 /boot ext4 2GB; sda2 swap swap 4GB; sda3 / ext4 20GB; sda4 /home ext4 *GB ???14:02
pmjdebruijnericzhill: GPT is mostly intended for UEFI (not entirely true, but for most practical purposes it is)14:02
ericzhillCurrent partition setup is sda1 /boot ext2 1GB; sda2 / ext4 300GB; sda3 swap14:03
ericzhillI did double-check the disk UUID matches with /etc/fstab.  I saw some posts on AskUbuntu that indicated those might not match correctly.14:04
pmjdebruijncan you post an actual screenshot (via phone??) somewhere, where we cna see the entire sccreen?14:04
pmjdebruijnmessage context might give us a clue14:05
pmjdebruijnwhich xubuntu version btw? 16.04.1?14:05
ericzhillI'm in a meeting for another hour or so, then yes, screenshots inbound.  Xubuntu 16.04.114:05
ericzhillPicture of the panic: https://goo.gl/photos/NcQjyETGuLSro3La614:44
ericzhillpmjdebruijn: I can get you a video if that would help, but not much scrolled past before that screen.14:45
pmjdebruijnthat's incredibly funky14:47
pmjdebruijnespecially found /bin/sh but couldn't execute it14:48
pmjdebruijnI would boot a live cd, mount the partition and check if the files are okay14:48
pmjdebruijnericzhill: if you in a chroot, you can apt a tool called debsums, which you can then use to verify all the files are okay14:48
ericzhillBooting into live now.14:48
ericzhilldebsums is trawling through files at this point.  All ok.14:53
ericzhill(So far)14:53
pmjdebruijncan you do14:53
pmjdebruijnfile /sbin/init14:53
pmjdebruijnfile /bin/sh14:54
pmjdebruijnsee if they are proper 64bit binaries14:54
ericzhillfile /sbin/init -> symlink to systemd -> ELF 64-bit14:55
ericzhillfile /bin/sh -> symlink to dash -> ELF 64-bit14:55
pmjdebruijnsounds good14:57
ericzhillJust deleted all the partitions, and created a new msdos partition table with parted.  Going to try the install again....  This can't be that complicated.  Right?14:58
Artemis3ericzhill, did you run memtest on that laptop?16:19
ericzhillNo.  I'll try that shortly.16:25
Artemis3first thing to do when seeing kernel panics16:26
ericzhillEven though 32-bit works great and the 64-bit live works?16:27
Artemis3you never know...16:27
Artemis3bad ram lurking could be the problem16:27
ericzhillFair enough.  I'll get memtest started and let it run for a while.16:28
jones641Hello everyone!17:29
jones641Anybody know how to tell lightdm not to turn of my screen when locking the computer?17:32
xanguaDid you try light locker settings? (Last tab in power settings) jones64117:52
jones641@xangua yes, but that only gives me the option to tell it when to lock it, but nothing on screen poweroff18:14
ericzhillFWIW, memtest went fine.  I'm starting to think this machine is allergic to 64-bit anything.  Ubuntu 64-bit won't boot, live or otherwise.18:42
ericzhillFollow up - mint 64-bit installed and boots fine.  Can't get live Ubuntu 64-bit to boot.  64-bit Xubuntu boots fine but won't boot after install on HDD. <shrugs>20:13
glitchdcan someone please help me figure out how to disable the feature pinch to zoom? its driving me nuts, every 'time i try to scroll with 2 fingers it zooms the screen20:58
