neutron_Can anyone tell me when can I expect the next LTS release?05:25
lotuspsychjeneutron_: 18.0405:25
neutron_When?05:25
baizonneutron_: 18.0405:25
Ben64ubuntu releases are yy.mm05:25
lotuspsychjeneutron_: 18 04 :p05:25
baizonneutron_: LTS is every 2 years05:26
neutron_I am 12.04 is ending support05:26
neutron_and I cannot wait that long05:26
Ben64neutron_: yep, 12+5=1705:26
hateballneutron_: you can upgrade to 14.04 or 16.0405:26
Ben64you know there are two newer LTS than 12.0405:26
neutron_I have this heavy duty machine05:27
mutanteneutron_: early 2018. every 2 years. https://www.ubuntu.com/info/release-end-of-life05:27
neutron_I cannot upgrade distro frequently05:27
neutron_I cannot risk breaking things05:27
Ben64neutron_: good thing you're on LTS then...05:27
mutantethat's what LTS is for :)05:27
neutron_So, I can upgrade to 16.04. When does its support end?05:28
mutanteneutron_: yea, it's really time to replace Precise. April 2705:28
Ben6416+5=2105:28
lotuspsychje!releasenotes | neutron_05:28
ubottuneutron_: Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) release notes can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XenialXerus/ReleaseNotes05:28
neutron_Is there any chance that 12.04 will be extended till April 2018 so that I can directly jump to 18.04?05:29
mutantenot sure if you want to jump to that in one step or multiple steps though05:29
Ben64neutron_: no05:29
mutanteusually i would just go one step at a time05:29
neutron_You sure that 12.04 support won't be extended?05:29
gogetaset your updater to lts only then let it do its thing05:29
Ben64neutron_: yes and you can't skip anyway05:29
gogetano it whont05:29
neutron_10.04 was extended by almost 2 years.05:30
mutantego to trusty (14.04) first05:30
neutron_I guess I will have to install 16.0405:30
neutron_14.04?05:30
neutron_why?05:30
Ben6412.04 can only upgrade to 14.0405:31
neutron_So, I have to upgrade to 14.04 and then go 16.04?05:31
gogetayep then let it go to 16.0405:31
Ben64if you want 16.04 yes05:31
mutantebecause you might not want to have to adjust so many things at once. depends what services you are running. for example adjustments for Apache 2.2 -> 2.4 you need because of syntax changes05:31
gogetai dunno what your trying not to brake05:31
lotuspsychjeneutron_: and there is always clean install if you want...05:31
neutron_this is going to be a huge pain and a lot of downtime05:32
neutron_And I have only 30 days left.05:32
mutantehow many servers?05:33
lotuspsychjeneutron_: next time dont wait too long?05:33
gogetai dunno what your trying not to mess up05:33
gogetayea should not let your systems fall that far behind05:33
mutanteif you have a large cluster, cant you reinstall them one by one without much downtime by depooling one, reinstall, repool.. next server05:34
neutron_Thank you very much.05:35
neutron_I'll start my upgrade. Have a nice day, folks.05:35

DoowHi, I don't know if this is a problem in ssh, ubuntu or cygwin. Either way, the problem is that I use ssh in cygwin to connect to a number of different ubuntu servers. What they all have in common is that after a while of inactivitity they sometimes hang. No connection lost or anything. They just stops accepting input. I can't even abort the current connection.09:13
blackflowDoow: if you can't abort connection, it sounds like a problem on the client side09:14
Doowblackflow, you might be right. I might be trying to interrupt the 'wrong' way. I'm not sure what decides to close if I do e.g. ctrl+d.09:16

repozitornow i see my process annoying by context switch.11:21
intriga__hello11:21
repozitoris there exist any solution in ubuntu to prevent context switch for special process?11:21
repozitormy process need to use exactly 100% of one core.11:22
repozitormy system has 4 core, the other cores will be available for scheduling.11:22
blackflowrepozitor: only if you schedule all _other_ processes to other cores. You can pin a process to a core but that doesn't guarantee other processes won't use the core.11:24
blackflowrepozitor: for such things the containers are helpful because you can then isolate process groups and set cpu/core affinity per container11:25
repozitorblackflow, your saying i should shield my special process to core X, and shield other processes to other core, right?11:27

ubuntuzuzuOerHeks: that make sense, but why netboot name them differently?14:07
semitonesEriC^^, yeah that is nice. I ended up making a directory called ~/.local/bin/su.d/ to put scripts that need to run as root, chown and chmod them so root is the only one who can write, and add the scripts to visudo14:07
friball of a sudden since this morning connecting and selecting bluetooth audio device prevents flash streaming -- please help thank you14:07
blackflowOerHeks: on 16.04?14:07
OerHeksubuntuzuzu, i have no answer to that, sure the netboot image is 16.04 or up?14:07
blackflowOerHeks: systemd udev doesn't have em* names14:07
EriC^^semitones: nice, can you set the whole dir or you have to add the scripts one by one? i'm curious14:07
ubuntuzuzuOerHeks: yes it comes directly from archive.ubuntu.com xenial repository14:08
EriC^^semitones: also it's probably a good idea to chown the su.d dir so only root can delete the files14:09
semitonesEriC^^, I don't know about sudoers well enough to tell you for sure. Everything i've read mentions adding scripts one by one14:09

tsgloveI am looking at this link, yet I can't figure out what would the *next* network card in an Ubuntu server be named. https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/master/src/udev/udev-builtin-net_id.c#L2015:28
lotuspsychjefrib: ok here's a new idea, test your blutooth in a liveusb 16.04.215:28
friblotuspsychje, i'm going to try this ppa first..15:28
fribno?15:28
tsgloveThis first is enp0s3      .... would the next card be    enp0s4    ???15:28
lotuspsychjefrib: its your machine, you can do what you like15:28
friblotuspsychje, which means?15:28
fribthe ppa could create problems?15:29
zb??15:29
lotuspsychjefrib: means your choice15:29
friboh15:29
fribwell if it's worth a shot I will try it15:29
fribthis guy says it worked for him15:29
nacctsglove: it depends on the physical topology15:29
lotuspsychjefrib: indeed15:29
tsglovenacc, this ubuntu server is a VM inside VirtualBox...15:29
tsgloveI am not sure... what or how15:29
nacctsglove: enp0s3 means bus 0 slot 3; enp0s4 would be bus 0 slot 415:29
friblotuspsychje, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/+bug/1608820/comments/715:30
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1574324 in pulseaudio (Ubuntu) "duplicate for #1608820 pulseaudio crashes when connecting to bluetooth headphones (due to ubuntu changes?)" [High,Fix released]15:30
nacctsglove: right, so you control exactly what the 'physical' topology your VM sess is15:30
fribhe says "use my version of pulse"15:30
nacc*sees15:30
fribthat means?? sudo apt remove pulse?15:30
fribremove and reinstall "pulseaudio" pkg?15:30
tsglovenacc... I... I am at a loss.   How... or... how?15:31
tsgloveI mean15:31
tsgloveI just want that second network card to connect15:31
nacctsglove: don't do anything and it will by default, presuming it's configured correctly in the host15:32
nacctsglove: you have not actually said anything that is an issue, afaict15:32
fribhow can I install pulseaudio from a ppa I just added instead of the official one?15:32
nacctsglove: you pointed to a link into source (rather than the documentation of the feature?)...15:32
tsgloveWell, in VirtualBox, I added the additional network card, and the server doesn't load it.15:33
naccfrib: if the ppa's version is later than the release version, it will automatically on `apt update; apt upgrade`. If not use `apt policy pulseaudio` and specify the version to install with `apt install pulseaudio=<version>`15:33
nacctsglove: does your server show multiple network cards?15:33
tsgloveno... only one if I run  ifconfig15:34
tsgloveyet in virtualbox, I have added two15:34
nacctsglove: e.g. in `ip a`15:34
nacctsglove: what? if ifconfig shows it then your server *does* show multiple network cards...15:34
fribnacc, i don't know if the ppa's version is later or how to find out15:34
nacctsglove: oh "only one", sorry misread15:34
tsglovenacc, ip a   does show two cards15:34
naccfrib: read the rest of what i wrote...15:34
nacctsglove: so probably you haven't configured it properly15:34
nacctsglove: are you using /etc/network/interfaces15:34
nacctsglove: ?15:35
fribnacc i need to install this one  1:8.0-0ubuntu3.1~xenial9 50015:35
fribso apt install pulseaudio=?15:36
tsgloveyes... just modified /etc/network/interfaces   nacc15:36
tsgloverebooting now15:36
tsglovenacc,  now it comes up in  ifconfig15:36
nacctsglove: right.15:36
tsglovethank you!!  I am going to read   man ip    to learn what it is.15:36
nacctsglove: nothing to do with naming15:36
naccfrib: yeah, with that version in there15:36
fribnacc, the whole 1:8.0...xenial9 ?15:37
naccfrib: yes15:37
fribnacc,  it won't do it because it says i have requested an impossible situation15:38
naccfrib: sometimes possible with PPAs that aren't maintained15:38
fribnacc, http://paste.ubuntu.com/24288487/15:38
naccfrib: you will need to add libpulse0 to be from the same ppa (probably the same version)15:39
naccfrib: and maybe pulseaudio-module-x11 from the same ppa15:39
fribnacc, is it wrong that it says "but 1:8.0-0ubuntu3.2 is to be installed" ?15:39
fribwhen i intended 3.115:39
naccfrib: no, read the output15:39
naccfrib: apt doens't know you want to use the ppa15:39
naccfrib: it onl knows what you told it15:40
fribnacc, i specified the version in the ppa though15:40
naccfrib: no15:40
naccfrib: you specified *one* package's version15:40
naccfrib: apt always prefers the latest version it can find, unless the package has different deps15:40
fribnacc, sorry I'm confused. i thought that was the whole point of specifying an earlier version15:40
BluesKajfrib, you have purge your current pulseaudio and pulseaudio utils in oder to use the ppa version, dur to conflicting configs etc15:41
naccfrib: yes, for *one* pacakge15:41
lotuspsychjehmm what i find weird, this bug is from 2016, says fix released and still persist on his system15:41
naccfrib: but you have to specify the version for dependencies too15:41
lotuspsychjedoesnt make sense15:41
nacclotuspsychje: true, does say fix releaseed in xenial15:41
fribBluesKaj, ok so I tried that and it still doesn't install15:41
fribi will try installing the libpulse0 from the ppa15:42
naccfrib: which PPA are you using?15:43
fribnacc, it's called "themuso"15:43
cleistheneshello?15:44
fribnacc, i installed libpulse0, pulseaudio still wouldn't install, said I need pulseaudio-module-x11 so i tried to instal that from the same ppa, but wouldn't install15:44

tomreynculthero: that wouldn't be necessary if you were using LVM17:27
tomreynculthero: on a different topic: if you are looking to develop more professionally, you could have development, staging and live environments, where at least the last two are configured identically (except for system specific configuration slike hostname / ip adresses etc.).17:30
tomreynthat way you can test such transitions safely before you run them on the live site.17:31
cultherotomreyn: I have 4 environments configured similarly (not entirely identically now, because of some recent changes).  I attempted the update to php7 on a throwaway dev environment for a test run and it was poor, took troubleshooting to resolve some of the problems (like missing PHP modules, etc)17:32
tomreyn(and, with snapshotting, rollback quickly for a new try / extra life ;) )17:32

parapangreeting ubunthian fellows ! I have a network problem. I took the HDD of a damaged machine to another PC. booted, up, everything seems to be fine, all loading drivers shows "OK", except for the network card which is not working. tried several stuff, editing 70-persistent-net.rules didn't changed the situation, lshw -C network shows the network card with *-network DISABLED17:44

mark76Yes, and then someone wrote a new plugin that's compatible with the new api?  Did none of you know that?17:56
CrazySane!pastebinit | parapan_17:56
ubottuparapan_: pastebinit is the command-line equivalent of !pastebin - Command output, or other text can be redirected to pastebinit, which then reports an URL containing the output - To use pastebinit, install the « pastebinit » package from a package manager - Simple usage: command | pastebinit -b http://paste.ubuntu.com17:56
StumpDumbnot sure how to use lfdisk17:56
parapan_CrazySane: that particular command gives me all details of the network card. is it a specific info you need to know ? because to give you the full output I'll have to write-it by hand .....I cannot copy it from that other machine . . .17:57
LjLmark76, assuming that "none" of the people here knew about that just because i appear not to sounds like flawed logic.17:57
CrazySaneparapan_: ah. So the other machine is offline. gotcha17:57
CrazySaneparapan_: that makes sense, we're talking about a network card here.17:57
naccjeffreylevesque_: can you get the output of tying to start syslog-ng? it would be in `journalctl -xn`, or you can run it by hand probably17:57
parapan_CrazySane: is started but without the network . . .. . :D17:58
parapan_CrazySane: that why I asked if you want a specific detail so I can read it on the monitor :D17:58
CrazySaneparapan_: I'm fishing at the moment, perhaps someone else here will have something to start with?17:59
LjLmark76, anyway it wouldn't be included in libpurple itself because it's a separate project, so unless the developers somehow agree to merge it, it cannot be part of Pidgin/Purple. it could still be provided as its own package, but it just isn't (except in PPA), i guess someone could volunteer for packaging it properly17:59

parapan_CrazySane: logical name is enp0s2518:06
CrazySaneStumpDumb: you likely need to add 'sudo' in front of what ever you're entering.18:07

Lukemutante: /etc/ is where enabled services are symlinked18:36
naccLuke: it uses /usr/local/lib/systemd/system as well18:36
naccLuke: per `man systemd`18:36
mutanteoh, so you dont put unit files directly in /etc? ok18:36
Lukenacc: it does but the user has to create that folder. the systemd package in ubuntu doesn't actually create it18:36
CrazySanesix86: so you're all set now too?18:36

naccLuke: i have no idea what that last comment means18:37
naccLuke: also, i think /usr/lib/systemd/user works (again per manpages018:37

Lukenacc: see how it has "/usr/lib/systemd/system/*" in there?18:39
naccLuke: which do not18:39
Lukenacc: then look at the ubuntu man pages and it has "/lib/systemd/system/*"18:39
naccLuke: upstream manpges are irrelevant to distributions18:39
chaid118:40
naccLuke: well, in practice they are highly relevant as the basis, but i mean you can't read an upstream manpage and assume it's correct for every distribution18:40
Lukenacc: my question is why is it different in ubuntu. is /usr/lib/systemd/system not intended to be used in ubuntu?18:40
hxegonHaving a Mosh problem. When I do the mosh me@whateverip it just exits immediately with no message, any advice?18:40

ppfi've got one machine that i want the compiler to run on, and one that's doing the preprocessing20:38

naccppf: not the host in client/host relationship20:39
angell-sweiora is it admin User aswell? New one?20:39
ppfalright, but what i'd call the client has a dynamic address and name20:39
naccppf: what20:40
naccppf: there is no 'client' in distcc, what are you talkinga bout?20:40
naccppf: you have a machine you run `distcc` on, and then you have 1+ hosts that you are remotely going to use as slaves to build20:40
ioriaangel_swe,   sudo apt update works ?20:41
naccppf: by default (plain mode), distcc does preprocessing on the machine you run it on and then sends compilation to slaves20:41
anddamnacc: wouldn't the "client" suggest a "server" counterpart rather than "host"?20:41
ppfnacc: the former is what i called a client20:41
naccppf: in pump mode slaves do both20:41
ppfyes20:41
naccanddam: i don't know what you're referring to. ppf is the one that said "client"20:41
ppfif i understood you correctly, i'm supposed to add all machines to everyone's distcc config20:42

ppfgood20:42
naccppf: all the remotes need distccd installed and not running if using ssh20:42
naccppf: again, this is all literally in the manpage20:43
naccppf: e.g., use `distcc --show-hosts` to see what it would use20:43
ioriaangel_swe,   network is working ? ping www.google.com20:43
ppfnacc: I did, shows the host i'm intending it to use20:43
naccppf: ok, and did you configure it to use ssh as documented in the manpage?20:45
angell-sweiora no. İt doesnt sees My Wireless.  Sees neigbors20:45

angell-swekgb telling me?20:46
ioriakgb, 127.0.1.1 is not set on username20:46

ppfnacc: so. running the build with distcc, while watching distccmon, only runs on localhost20:52

fribnacc, is this a good guide? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds?action=show&redirect=KernelMainlineBuilds#Installing_upstream_kernels_.28manually.2921:02

fribnacc, i dont understand the question21:05
ioriaangel_swe  and you  have a 'mamarley' ppa  to remove probably21:05
naccfrib: you said that the reason you can't use the 4.4 kernel is someting about a bluetooth speaker21:05
naccfrib: is that actually true?21:05
fribnacc, i dont think i said that. I thought I said that I am currently using a 4.8 kernel and would like to revert to an earlier one i.e. 4.7 or earlier because from what I read in the post I was led to believe that that would resolve the issue21:06
angell-swehttps://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/e9mXwgcr/irccloudcapture1387192362.jpg21:06
