deenoI was looking for software, and I had an idea to a buy a PDF editor, but it was mac OS X based. Can I get it to run on linux.00:35
deenoCan I get it to run on Linux?00:35
geniiNo00:48
geniideeno: Just open the pdf you want to edit with LibreOffice Draw00:51
deenowell I am interested in using and abusing mac software, but I guess there is no way to emulate the mac on Linux.00:52
geniiThen choose use the "export to PDF"00:52
deenoCan I open a PDF with LO Draw?00:53
geniiYou can emulate earlier ones with apps like basilisk2 but then those were 68k machines. And then the lates MacOS they would run would be 7.5.3  or so00:53
geniideeno: Yes. LibreOffice Draw00:53
deenoI guess you can. I wonder if I should try it in Win1000:55
tertuwhat's a good wireless chipset to look for in a usb dongle?01:00
deenoI don't know. check newegg01:00
geniitertu: Atheros/Qualcomm01:02
genii( assuming a WiFi dongle )01:03
schnoodlesHey guys. Today when I turned on my machine MySQL has decided to not work. journalctl shows this -- https://gist.github.com/joshbenham/74513cbd9f9180f6f098d9fefc91d87201:08
tertugenii: yes. the dongle i bought has an Atheros AR9271 in it01:31
deenoHow do I disable touch pad in Plasma permanently everlasting01:46
schnoodlesIf I removed akonadi-backend-mysql will that be very very bad? I have a bad dependency issue and cant seem to resolve it.02:03
valorieschnoodles: do you use the PIM stack?02:03
valoriekmail, etc?02:03
schnoodlesNo I do not.02:04
valoriethen it won't be a problem02:04
schnoodlesI am attempting to reinstall first to hope that it works. Seems like I have a pkg unmet dependency bug and I cant reinstall anything because it wants me to do apt install -f which also throws an error....02:05
valorieapt install -f is always the best idea02:09
valoriewhat error does that throw?02:09
valorie-f = fix02:09
schnoodlesI just seem to be getting some crazy database errors. Now I am trying to upgrade to Maria because MySQL was playing up.02:22

deenoHow do I get to adminstration mode?03:00
deenoHow do I get to the administrative metal of Linux?03:02
deenoHow do I get to adminstrative metal of linux?03:02
valoriedeeno: what?03:04
valorieare you asking about sudo?03:04
valorie!sudo03:05
ubottusudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !pkexec (for older releases: !gksu and !kdesudo). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo03:05
deenono I am asking for no X window mode03:06
deenono I am asking for non X window mode03:06
Oderusjust start in recovery mode03:06
deenoI don't have GRUB03:07
deenoHow do I do it without Grub? eh03:07
Oderuspress escape multiple times when booting, this should bring you to grub03:07
deenoAnd if it is not installed. this isn't a multiOS machine03:08
Oderusor you could always install grub03:08
valorieI don't see how recovery mode can be called "administrative" mode03:08
valorieyou can do little in recovery mode03:09
Oderusthe person wants to be in ubuntu with no X from what I understand03:09
valorieum03:10
krytarikdeeno: See http://askubuntu.com/a/7968203:10
deenoI am having troubles. I don't like using my password to install and alter security flags.03:10
valorieperhaps instead of installing Kubuntu, then install Ubuntu Server ?03:11
valorieor netboot, so you can get exactly what you want03:11
valorie!netboot03:11
ubottuUbuntu can be installed in lots of ways. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation for documentation. Problems during install? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommonProblemsInstall - Don't want to use a CD? See http://tinyurl.com/3exghs - See also !automate03:11
deenoI wanted to defrag my SSD03:18
deenosolid state drive03:19
Oderusdoes it have an ext4 filesystem?03:19
valoriedefragging isn't really a thing in linux03:21
Oderuscan be done on an ext4 tho... with e4defrag03:21
deenoYah, newest Kubuntu03:22
valoriewhat's the point?03:24
deenostarted it, what next?03:24
Oderusgood question valorie. it's almost pointless on a regular drive i don't see the sense on an SSD either :)03:25
valorieit was sort of fun in windows to watch it run03:25
valoriebut I don't miss that at all in linux03:25
valoriethat's like missing McAfee or so03:26
Oderusits much faster in linux and done by command line so no colored boxes to watch03:26
Oderusmissing AOL!03:26
deenoI have had enough. Can I buy a Mac OS X emulator? or should I skip the idea03:26
valorieha03:27
valorieI did use compuserve, never really AOL03:27
Oderusdeeno: you wanted to know about booting into a non X environment but you need a mac os x emulator? I don't understand what it is your trying to do03:28
Oderusi suspect a large amount of alchohol may be involved >.>03:31
Oderusand on that note, good night!03:32
deenoOderus: several things :)03:32
deenoI wouldn't mind destroying a Mac OS X system ;)03:33
deenoI am not saying the mac os x is user friendly03:33
valoriedeeno: you might prefer to run BSD then?03:33
deenoBSD has Mac emulaton ??03:35
valorieMac is running BSD03:38
deenoand it is proprietary03:39
deenoperhaps not as much as windows10 but I am not impressed. Look at me, I am cheap just like Apple has always been.03:40
valoriein any case, this doesn't involve Kubuntu03:43
valorieyou are welcome to continue in #kubuntu-offtopic03:43

Guest90149hello, I have upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 and sddm does not boot properly. It boots to a black screen. I can go to vt1 and start sddm and get a working kde session. I had to create a new user because I couldn't login with the old one. Any ideas how to fix this?17:10

ross_hey guys, newly installed. Does anyone know how to force the machien to use a specific DNS server rather than fetching it from the router?17:57
BluesKajross_, you can add dns nameserver Ips to /etc/network/interfaces or most routers allow you to change dns in their firmware page18:05
ross_thanks will give it a try18:05
ross_cant just edit resolv.conf?18:07
BluesKajross_, network manager will overwrite /etc/resolv.conf afaik18:10
