=== zz_MasterScript is now known as MasterScript
zeroeaxCan I do KVM PCIe Passgthrough with ubuntu?00:20
zeroeaxmy hardware supports it, and kvm supports it00:20
zeroeaxdoes ubuntu have the packages compiled to support it?00:20
zeroeaxusually people use debian, or in some cases citrix SUSE based host os00:21
zeroeaxbut I want ubuntu as my main OS, and I want to know if I can do it with ubuntu without serious modification00:21
tonberry-kingAny one here know a decent amount of lvm ?00:24
zeroeaxtonberry-king, I don't think so, I asked a pretty basic question, and 20 minutes later when I found the answer in the docs, no one had answered me yet00:31
tonberry-kingzeroeax: Thanks00:31
tonberry-kingzeroeax: Trying to figure out if i am able too stripe my boot partition00:32
zeroeaxstripe? what do you mean?00:32
tonberry-kingusing lvm00:32
tonberry-kingLike raid 000:32
zeroeaxoh, I don't know anything about using RAID, I know how it works, but I've never used it with linux00:33
tonberry-kingI know you cant raid 0 a boot partition with mdadm00:33
tonberry-kingzeroeax: It's cool00:33
zeroeaxLike, I've read detailed technical documentation on RAID, but i've never set it up on linux00:33
tonberry-kingzeroeax: On the lvm channel, figuring it out00:34
zeroeaxcool tonberry-king00:34
zeroeaxgood luck with that00:34
zeroeaxoh, what's the channel00:34
zeroeaxI still have a question too, related to the one no one here could answer00:35
tonberry-kingThanks man but i think i will have to mirror boot which is no biggie00:35
tonberry-kingzeroeax: What was the question ?00:36
=== KindTwo is now known as KindOne
zeroeaxtonberry-king, if there is a way to make partitions adjust their sizes automatically, specifically my swap00:39
zeroeaxI need more swap, but I ended up using commands to force it larger00:39
tonberry-kingzeroeax: like automated resizing ?00:39
zeroeaxyeah00:39
tonberry-kingzeroeax: I dunno, never heard of that before00:39
zeroeaxLike, it's supposed to make resizing and managing partitions more simple and manageable, so I thought MAYBE it would have a feature like that00:40
zeroeaxIt's a shot in the dark but you don't know unless you ask00:40
tonberry-kingzeroeax: What is "making" resizing00:40
tonberry-kingzeroeax: easier ?00:40
tonberry-kingAre you talking about resize2fs ?00:42
zeroeaxI don't know, that's what the ubuntu installer told me, it said it's used for easier managment and changes to your partitioning scheme00:42
zeroeaxI never used LVM except when I needed full disk encryption, and I didn't care about what size the partitions were00:42
zeroeaxso I know little to nothing about it00:42
tonberry-kingLVM isn't encryption00:42
tonberry-kingIt's a partitioning scheme00:43
zeroeaxtonberry-king, but ubuntu's installer requires you use it if you use the installers FDE option00:43
zeroeaxlike, if you set up full disk encryption with ubuntu's ubiquity installer, you must use LVM00:44
zeroeaxand let ubuntu manage the whole thing00:44
tonberry-kingLVM allows the ablility to move partition's with out umounting00:44
zeroeaxtonberry-king, I see00:44
tonberry-kingLUKS is the encryption i think00:45
tonberry-kingNeither will automate00:45
tonberry-kingAFAIK00:45
zeroeaxyeah, but the ubuntu installer automatically selects use LVM(check box with no other options and a very limited description) when you tell it to encrypt your whole disk00:46
tonberry-kingIt automates the partitions00:46
zeroeaxso that's what I know it from, and that's all i know it from00:46
zeroeaxyeah...00:46
zeroeaxI just got the impression that it was more capable from the little one line description in the installer00:47
tonberry-kingNo man00:47
zeroeaxIt didn't really explain it00:47
zeroeaxno I accept you're right, I'm just explaining why i thought that00:47
tonberry-kingfair imagine pie graphs it automates the sizes not the partitions00:48
zeroeaxI see00:48
zeroeaxWell, regardless, it does what I need it to, just not in a way I hoped would simplify it, but it is what it is, and it works for what it's intended to00:49
zeroeaxI just used a couple commands to adjust the size of the swap00:49
zeroeaxI need to buy a ram upgrade00:49
tonberry-kingsetup is simple maintenance is hard00:49
zeroeaxI only have 8gb, and my laptop can support 16gb ram00:50
zeroeaxif I had 16gb ram, I wouldn't need swap to compile huge things00:50
tonberry-kinghow much is your swap and are you on a ssd ?00:50
zeroeaxI'm not on an SSD, i'm on a very slow hard drive00:50
zeroeaxit's the slowest hard drive I've had in 10 years00:51
tonberry-kingIf anything goes into swap it will be slower than your hard drive00:51
zeroeaxbut I didn't buy the laptop for the hard drive, i bought it for the cpu and gpu00:51
tonberry-kingIf you have 8 gig swap thats plenty00:51
zeroeaxI do intend to put in a 512gb SSD, and upgrade the ram from 8gb 1600mhz to 16gb 1866mhz00:52
zeroeaxbut money is a factor00:52
tonberry-kingHow big is the swap partition ?00:52
zeroeax10gb00:52
zeroeaxbut swapiness is set to 000:52
tonberry-kingyour fine00:52
zeroeaxI need non-swap00:52
zeroeaxI don't want it to take me 10 hours to compile my custom android kernel00:53
tonberry-kingRead into putting compile into ram00:53
zeroeaxputting compile into ram?00:53
tonberry-kingLike tempfs00:53
zeroeaxwhat am i putting in the ramfs?00:54
tonberry-kingyou can mount ram into a tmpfs and use that space to compile faster00:54
zeroeaxyeah, but I need the ram to compile00:54
KmanI have been using Ubuntu 14.04 for years, should i wait for the 18.04?00:54
zeroeaxlike, compiling this thing takes 6-7 gb of ram00:54
zeroeaxwhich means I have to close every program I have to compile it00:55
zeroeaxI can't even have a browser open00:55
zeroeaxor it runs out of ram00:55
tonberry-kingAnd droid kenrel is 6 gigs ?00:55
Prince_how to install apt-get00:55
zeroeaxThe ggc front-end for compiling for this specific binary format is very very very bloated00:55
tonberry-kingBut a kernel being 6 gigs is over kill00:56
OerHeksPrince_, install ubuntu, it comes with apt00:56
zeroeaxno it takes 6gb of ram during compilation, the kernel's source is only 300mb00:57
Prince_i know OerHeks my mistake it uninstalled00:57
zeroeaxIt's because samsung doesn't know how to make a good compiler00:57
tonberry-kingWell i dunno what to tell you man00:57
zeroeaxtonberry-king, well, tell me to hurry up and get money for the ram upgrade i guess00:57
fyan-ravahello00:58
zeroeaxhaha, I'll afford it at the end of next month, it's budgeted, SSD and RAM00:58
Prince_i use live cd but nothing happened  as i changed root and tried to install it00:58
zeroeaxI just have to deal with what I have until then00:58
=== Basketball is now known as Harris
zeroeaxCan't make the money come any sooner and I don't want to borrow against my line of credit for it00:59

killtheliteratehiya folks. trying to install ubuntu on an ssd, and am not quite sure on some terminology. Does "dual boot" refer to a single disk with multiple OS? If I'm installing Ubuntu on a separate drive, and will also be installing the bootloader to that drive, does that constitute a dual boot?02:36

Though I will echo Ben64's comment that (despite even the name of that log directory) "dist-upgrade" is a poor term to use for upgrading from one Ubuntu release to another as "apt-get dist-upgrade" will *not* on its own upgrade you to a new release, and if you're using apt-get dist-upgrade as part of your method of upgrading then you are doing03:12
renatosilvaclackamas: not sure either, but I wonder if there's a difference between installing from scratch or upgrading03:12
Jordan_Uit *wrong* as the only supported way is via do-release-upgrade / update-manager.03:12

renatosilvaJordan_U: I guess I will need to try out the 16.04 image and see then, cause I don't really remember if I'm using that or if I've upgraded to that version03:18
Ben64renatosilva: what is the output of uname -a03:19
Jordan_Urenatosilva: It probably is from your VPS. What is the output of "uname -r"?03:19
schnoodlesThere are quite a few .pid files just no mysql03:19
renatosilvaJordan_U: will be surprising if they use kernel 2.6 in their 16.04 image, since libc is now furious about it03:19
wastrelwait yakkety shouldn't you be asking in #ubuntu+1 ?03:20
Ben64renatosilva: what is the output of uname -a03:20
Ben64wastrel: 16.10 is in the past03:20
wastrelthat's yakkety?03:20
Ben64yep03:20
Jordan_Urenatosilva: Remember that if what you have is a container rather than a VM then you can't control what kernel is used, it's the kernle of the host.03:20
wastreli'm 16.04 :(  my sorry03:20
clackamasschnoodles: 'ps aux | grep -i mysql'03:21
clackamasAnd see if it is running.03:21
renatosilvaJordan_U: yes it's a vps so the whole question is what kernel their host is using, so I'm scared that's 2.6, I don't think so03:21
Ben64renatosilva: omg what is the output of uname -a03:22
clackamas4.4.0-71.generic  is the current one in 16.0.4.2 LTS03:23
wastrelschnoodles: so if you do service mysql stop  what happens03:23
renatosilvaJordan_U: I think when I installed 16.04 it was closer to its release, so I don't think that would be enough time for the vps company  to create the image and test it and release to the users (meaning yes my 16.04 originated from updates command)03:24
Ben64renatosilva: HEY03:24
Ben64renatosilva: LISTEN!03:24
schnoodlesclackamas: no It does not pick up any mysql. Now if I try and install mysql it says that its running during installation and fails.03:26

renatosilvawell, thanks all anyway03:28
wastrelschnoodles: what does service mysql stop   do03:29

killtheliterateinstalled ubuntu with the other disks unplugged... hit another gnarly maybe bug, kinda like https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/123819403:33
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1238194 in initramfs-tools "keyboard doesn't work to enter password with encrypted partitions ubuntu 13.10 saucy" [Undecided,New]03:33
clackamasschnoodles: ah, you are on 16.10.03:34
clackamasschnoodles: I suspect you are hitting a bug in the package and doing a google/bing search would probably get you a work around faster.03:34
snkcldon the default ubuntu+btrfs install, why is the home directory a subvol outside the ubuntu subvol? why not just create the subvolume as a child subvolume?03:36
schnoodlesclackamas: I have been googling for many an hour but to no prevail. Any idea on what I should be googling for exactly?03:37
clackamasschnoodles: try this:03:37
clackamassudo apt-get purge mysql-server-5.6 (or whatever version it is).03:38
clackamasschnoobles: then do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install mysql-server-<targetversion>03:38
schnoodlesSame problem. It fails because it tries to stop mysql but mysql is not actually installed so there is nothing to stop...03:44
wastrelmaybe replace the mysql service script with something that always returns true03:45
wastreltemporarily03:45
clackamasschnoodles: yeah, that sounds like a bug in the 16.10 package that won't have a workaround until it is fixed.03:45
schnoodlesI have had 16.10 installed for a while and this just appeared :S wastrel that could be a good approach if i knew how to do that :P03:47
clackamasschnoodles: can you re-post the url with package failure again?03:47
schnoodlesAlso why is there a /etc/init.d/mysql if mysql is uninstalled?03:48
clackamasit may have not gotten uninstall correctly.03:48
clackamasYou could also try re-naming the file.03:48
clackamas(don't delete)03:49
wastrelthat's a good idea to start03:49
clackamasif the package is testing for the existance of the file, it may not try to stop the service if it isn't there.03:49
schnoodlesOk that gave new errors -- https://gist.github.com/joshbenham/19cbea64d7874b29d3a5df51323c990003:50
clackamasschnoodles: progress maybe ;)  Can you post the new errors?03:51
schnoodlesYep in the gist above.03:51
schnoodlesOk I got mariadb installed. Although looks like all my databases have been destroyed :o03:54
clackamas:(03:56

BlitzerHoundHey y'all04:36
zakiyfadhilmuhsihallo04:36
BlitzerHoundQuick question, is there a good program for MUD games on ubuntu? All I could find was Mudlet, and it's not working.04:37
clackamasBlitzerHound: trying to run a server or a client?04:37
BlitzerHoundWell, I'm just trying to play a game, so client?04:38
BlitzerHoundI think04:38
zakiyfadhilmuhsii running linux for study cyber04:38
clackamasblitzerhound: it is the orignal Mmorpg game.04:39
clackamasI haven't played in 20 years.04:39
clackamasBut how is mudlet broken?04:39
BlitzerHoundWell, when I try to connect to the server, it just says trying to connect but never does. I've tried going to other games, and that works just fine.04:39
clackamasThat sounds like the server you are trying to se isn't available.04:40
clackamasdo you have the servers IP?04:40
BlitzerHoundI can connect using tintin++ and that works fine for connecting to it, so the server is fine04:40
BlitzerHoundI don't know the actual IP, only the address04:40
clackamasI would check that mudlet is using the correct port too.04:41
clackamasBLitzerHound: what version of Ubuntu are you using and which profile are you selecting?04:43
BlitzerHoundI'm using 16.10, and I don't know what you mean by which profile04:43
clackamasopen up an xterm04:43
clackamasAnd type 'mudlet'04:43
BlitzerHoundIs that different from the normal terminal?04:46
clackamasBliterzerHOund: same thing.04:46
BlitzerHoundAlright, did that04:47
clackamasmudlet prints out info in the terminal that might help you.04:47
BlitzerHoundSo I should try and connect again?04:47
clackamasyeah.04:47
BlitzerHoundOh... it connected. Weird.04:47
BlitzerHoundMaybe I just needed to open it in terminal? lol04:47
clackamasAll thought I install mudlet on my machine and get a screen with servers to connect to.04:48
clackamasI am on 16.0.4.2 LTS thought.04:48
clackamaserr though04:48
BlitzerHoundAnyway, thanks. Working perfectly now.04:49
clackamasAh,  what is different?04:50
BlitzerHoundNothing. I just pushed connect and it connected.04:50
BlitzerHoundMaybe the terminal helped somehow, but I didn't change anything. It's weird because I just tried it like 6 times.04:50
clackamasah.04:51
clackamasso you are not getting a wrapper screen.04:51
BlitzerHoundWhat do you mean?04:51
damian666Anyone have a tutorial or any way of installing the latest flash player on ubuntu04:51
clackamasBLiterzerHound: nevermind.  I was confused on the startup porcess.  Glad it's working for you.04:53
BlitzerHoundWell, thanks either way. Your magic instructions made it work. :D04:54
clackamaswhen you logout/log back in again, the command will probably work from Menu04:54
BlitzerHoundCool. I might just keep using terminal to open it if that's what's making it work. It's not difficult.04:56

clackamasmikehl, I think that is a little beyond the help here.   But I not clear on what you are asking?  You want just the 'before/middle/after.zip' string?05:00
mikehlyes05:00
clackamasAnd it is just those words?05:00
Ben64mikehl: you probably want #bash05:00
mikehlno they are all different05:00
mikehlon every line05:00
clackamasyou could try this:05:01
ivanhhee: I use all of: a plaintext file, a column-per-day calendar in libreoffice calc, a gitlab running in a virtual machine05:02
ivanif you're OK with emacs, org-mode is another option05:02
hheeivan, cool. what way do you organize your plain text file?05:02
clackamascat <file> | sed -r 's/"([a-z]+)".*"([a-z]+)".*"([a-z]+)\.zip"/\1\/\2\/\3/'05:02
Ben64clackamas: eww05:03
hheeivan, i also need reminder for task. what's the question05:03
clackamasBen64: come up with a cleaner regex05:03
hheeand sync between pc and laptop05:04
ivanhhee: I just write TODO or DONE or CANCELED before the things I need to do; I move lines around with alt-up/down in Sublime Text (default bindings are less pleasant)05:04
ivanhhee: hmm I would maybe use Google Calendar if I needed reminders?05:04
hheeivan, got it, thx a lot05:04
clackamasmikehl: you will  have to play with that regex.    But basically the () capture and the \1\2\3 are replacements.05:05
mikehlclack ^^ doesnt work05:05
mikehlok05:05
Ben64| awk -F: '{print $18}' | sed s/..$//05:05
Ben64there, better :D05:06
clackamasYou can also do something like: 's#"attchement_id".*"@".*"([a-z]+)".*"([a-z]+)".*"([a-z]+)\.zip"#\1\2\3#'05:06
ivanmikehl: that looks like a file with length prefixes on strings so you can't just replace a string with one of a different length05:07
clackamasBen64: it's not using : consistently.05:07
mikehlbens worked05:07
Ben64of course bens worked :)05:07
clackamascool.05:07
ivanmikehl: is it bencode?05:08
mikehlwhat will break this?05:08
mikehlspaces? special chars?05:08
Ben64extra :'s, inconsistent ";s" at the end of the field you want05:09

But, when I connect docking station, mouse works, lan connection works, but monitor is blank. I have also installed suggested (online) displaylink-driver-1.3.52 driver. ducasseCrazySane: i'm talking about the watchdog spam13:36
CrazySanethats in dmesg13:37
ducasseCrazySane: if you change that setting and reload journald's config, it should no longer send them so you see them in dmesg.13:38
blackflowCrazySane: well, you can try adding the LogLevel=warn under a new section "[Manager]" in /lib/systemd/system/systemd-journald.service, run systemctl daemon-reload. If that fixes your issue, you can copy the unit file under /etc/systemd/system as the one under /lib will be overrwritten on next update to the package13:38
blackflowCrazySane: or perhaps raise the overall default LogLevel to warn, as it's currently info. Not sure if that's what you want.13:40
CrazySaneblackflow: where do you see that Loglevel?13:41
blackflowCrazySane: the default i in /etc/systemd/system.conf13:41
blackflowCrazySane: *is13:41

saymoocompdoc, well.. you need an exchange plugin14:04
OerHeksfor exchange. evolution-mapi is depreciated, evolution-ews is current the plugin for evolution AFAIK14:04

andreandy BTW, I posted this on the Ubuntu forums and it got jailed.. they thougn I was doing an aprils fool jike i think14:09

DArqueBishopcompdoc: again, the assumption you're making is that IMAP or POP3 is enabled on the Exchange server Jakethepython is using. There's a better than even chance that it is not. It's better that he uses the actual Evolution-ews plugin, because at least there's a much better chance that it will work.14:13

If you partition using a modern version of gparted or the Ubuntu installer, it will do this automatically. If you have partitioned with an older tool you need to do it manually14:32

naccpleasehelp: it's manages your network configuration17:28
OerHeksits a tool + service deamon.17:29
pleasehelpI previously to this conversation thought that a network manager actually sent commands to the hardware and a configuration manager would edit text files or interact with your network manager.17:29
naccone could design something like that, but both NM and wicd, afaik, do both17:31
pleasehelpwhy can't I use any number of network managers ....... so long as I have at least that many networking devices?17:31
naccpleasehelp: becuase they all will try to manage all your networking devices17:32
pleasehelpfor instance I am happy with wicd for my wifi ... can't I just leave it alone and do something else for my ethernet?17:32
naccpleasehelp: you *can* have multiple network managers (note that NetworkManager is a specific tool). But you have to configure them correctly17:32
naccpleasehelp: and in your case, you're trying to use a non-manager altogether17:32
naccpleasehelp: so you need to tell wicd to not managed your wired interface, which it probably is doing by default17:32

_rubikHey guys. I'm trying to gracefully shutdown a 16.04 vps. I'm running znc on one user, so the simple reboot command doesn't give it time to close ports and notify irc servers. I was thinking of using init6 to let znc close cleanly before rebooting. Ideas?17:48
nacc_rubik: run znc as a service instead?17:48
_rubiknacc: Well that would be the solution to my problem. But I guess my underlying question. What is the more graceful way to restart my system considering reboot calls kill -9, which is a force quit.17:49
alkisg_rubik: reboot doesn't call kill -9 afaik17:49
raffelinit 0 :^)17:50
alkisgYou can also ask the login manager to logout + reboot17:50
alkisgThere are dbus calls for that17:50
_rubikalkisg: Then what does reboot call?17:50
alkisg_rubik: I'm guessing it calls kill normally first, giving some time for applications to close gracefully17:51
alkisgIt's implemented by systemd nowadays17:51
_rubikalkisg: Well when I last called reboot, it closed znc before it was able to send a logout to freenode. So I just left my Nick as a ghost when the vps rebooted17:52
alkisg_rubik: if you `kill znc`, does it close properly?17:52
alkisgIt might be an issue with znc, not with reboot...17:53
_rubikalkisg: Honestly I wouldn't be surprised17:53
alkisgAlso it should be possible to tell nickserv to remove the ghost upon znc login17:53
alkisgI'm not using znc so I don't know the details there17:54
nyaakobotDoes apt-get only update software installed through apt-get? silly question17:55
alkisgNo, it updates everything in apt sources17:55
alkisgSo if you installed something with dpkg but it's also in the repositories, it'll get updated17:55
_rubikalkisg: Yeah I'm asking someone in the znc channel. It's not a huge issue,I just want to get to the bottom of it.17:55
alkisgBut if you installed it with dpkg and it's not in the repositories, it won't17:55

OerHeksssd these days do not wear an tear anymore, within 10 years, so no extra option is needed.20:35
DelvienOerHeks: maybe he has an old one :P20:35
k1lnotmike: ubuntu got a cronjob for trim. that is enough for regular recent ssds.20:35
OerHeksnoatime, discard, swappiness, i did not touch those.20:37
notmikethis dude on the internet told me: "For a while, SSD partions were trimmed by adding the discard option to a partition’s entry in /etc/fstab. However, including discard is far more active than running fstrim, since it trims on the fly. This behavior means that discard writes to the disk far more often than fstrim, which makes it counter-productive."20:38

Delviennotmike sorry I only trust mike with these things.20:39
* notmike nods, sagely20:39
k1lnotmike: yes. discard was a solution from the early days. after a while the hardware got better and now the cronjob with fstrim running once a week seems to better for the daily use20:42

andrejHow do I find proftpd.conf as it is installed? It doesn't seem to be in the .deb22:02
andrejI need to diff changes someone did on the file against the stock version22:02
pleasehelpps: I am very thankful for the help22:03
naccpleasehelp: ok, the link goes down on the interface enp0s25 (which is true because you have rebooted the other end of hte link)22:04
ChaiTRexandrej: These might help: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/72746/get-diff-changes-between-original-files-installed-with-apt-and-current-files22:04
pleasehelpnacc, having a link is NOT a requirement for having an ip address assigned22:04
pleasehelpnacc, the interface can have an ip with or without a cable22:05
hxegonkoko: unless you are talking about that white box in the upper left corner, I don't see what you are describing22:05
kokoyes22:05
kokothe frame is white22:05
naccpleasehelp: i undrestand, i'm telling you what your log says22:06
naccpleasehelp: *something* believes enp0s25 is using dhcp22:06
pleasehelpnacc, ok, thanks, yes -- it does go down and it does say that and it does lose the ip address at (or very close to) the same time22:06
naccpleasehelp: earlier you said you were using wicd22:06
hxegonkoko: So that box is a window? what program is it?22:06
kokowell i guess it's not the program because it happens everywhere22:07
legendpophi22:07
kokofor example when pressing control + w22:07
hxegonkoko: have you tried restarting?22:07
pleasehelpnacc, yes, however I was told (not here or by you) that wicd would NOT do anything to an ethernet interface which was setup in /etc/network/interfaces22:07
kokoeverything has a weird white frame22:07
kokoi did a few time restart22:07
legendpopI'm using feren os22:08
pleasehelpnacc, that by configuring it in interfaces you disable wicd22:08
pleasehelp(for that interface)22:08
legendpopand i have problem with my wifi driver22:08
naccpleasehelp: i don't know if that is true or not22:08
kokoi meant super + w22:08
legendpopplease help22:08
hxegonkoko: was there anything you did (tweaked a setting, update, installed a package, change hardware, etc) right before this started?22:09
pleasehelpmaybe I can run strace or something on wicd to find out?22:09
naccpleasehelp: is this interface (enp0s25) listed in wicd (gui)?22:09
kokohxegon well i am not sure22:10
hxegonlegendpop: Describe the problem please22:10
pleasehelpnacc, checking22:10
kokohwo22:11
kokohave you encountered something similar?22:12
kokomaybe a bug in a new update22:13
kokoi don't know22:13
hxegonkoko: when did you update?22:13
kokoyesterday22:13
hxegonor rather, did you update shortly before this started happening?22:13
hxegonah22:13
kokoi thought an update/upgrade would fix it22:14
kokounfortunately it didn't22:14
hxegonso it was happening before that? How long has this been going on?22:14
kokoa week at most22:14
naccpleasehelp: also it generally makes little sense to have both wicd and network manager installed22:14
OerHekskoko happens after hybernate?22:14
pleasehelpnacc, I am not using network manager so I could uninstall it22:14
pleasehelpnacc, it is disabled currently22:15
kokohaven't noticed22:15
naccpleasehelp: this might be avahi? i see that it withdraws the records for enp0s2522:15
andrejthanks ChaiTRex - that's what I tried. But the original is NOT in the deb, so I can't compare it, and hence my question22:15
pleasehelpnacc, I do see the wired interface in wicd but it is totally unclear to me how to know if it is being used or not by wicd22:15
naccandrej: i'm guessing proftpd uses /usr/share/proftpd/templates/proftpd.conf22:15
naccandrej: to mabye generate the actual proftpd.conf22:16
naccpleasehelp: i don't understand what you mean and i don't use wicd22:16
OerHekskoko tons of bugreports seems to be solved with the 370 driver , http://askubuntu.com/questions/896277/white-border-after-resuming-ubuntu / http://askubuntu.com/questions/896221/strange-artifacts-along-window-borders-after-waking-computer-from-sleep-mode22:16
ChaiTRexandrej: One suboptimal alternative is to install it on a virtual machine and copy over the file.22:16
kokoi will try22:17
kokothanks OerHeks22:17
pleasehelpnacc, do you want me to disable wicd?22:17
pleasehelpnacc, if I do I will lose this chat channel but I can test with it disabled and see if the interface stays up when the rpi reboots22:18
pleasehelpnacc, I don't know a lot about avahi22:19
ChaiTRexandrej: I keep a small immutable VM image for experiments. It comes in handy for things like that sometimes.22:19
naccChaiTRex: lxd makes that pretty trivial (lxc launch ubuntu:xenial)22:20
andrejthanks nacc - how did I miss that =}22:20
naccandrej: i used `apt-file` to search for proftpd.conf22:20
pleasehelpnacc, thank you again ... I will disable wicd and be back after I know the results22:20
andrejChaiTRex - sounds like a reasonable approach ;}22:20
adrian_1908hello, I'm unsure how best to set permission on my web server, could someone give me advice?22:21
andrejI just did a dpkg -S /etc/proftp/proftpd.conf which came back emptyhanded :)22:21
andrejthanks again22:21
naccandrej: rigt, because i think it's a postinst step maybe? rather than a package-owned file22:22
kenrinCan't go wrong with 755 directory and 644 files andrian_190822:22
andrejsounds logical22:22
ChaiTRexnacc: I'll look into that. Thanks :)22:23
adrian_1908kenrin: Right. But I'm unsure about ownership of the files. I have my "admin" user that should have "7" on all web-content, the webserver "www-data" that only needs files:4 and dirs:5  (I think?) and the PHP-fpm user that I presume should own the files, since it creates new ones under its name anyway.22:24
=== MasterScript is now known as zz_MasterScript
adrian_1908Should I make php-user:admin the owner of the files and set chmod g+s on all folders so the group gets preserved when php-user creates new files?22:26
adrian_1908The webserver should be able to use the "other" rights 66[4] and 77[5], right?22:27
blackflowadrian_1908: no. create a dedicated user, then run php-fpm as that user. as simple as that. with default perms (644 on files, 755 on dirs), nginx (as www-data) will read static files just fine.22:28
blackflowadrian_1908: ideally, you'd want the PHP files to be owned by root, and only leave a directory where php may write, owned by that user. but that will complicate things if you have to update php through, say, sftp22:28
adrian_1908blackflow: yes, I want easy modifying of content (e.g. sftp) for the admin user without sudo.22:29
blackflowadrian_1908: it's a convenice, but note that faulty/vulnerable PHP will then be able to modify its own executables22:30
blackflowadrian_1908: if you don't have to touch files created by php through sftp, then maybe you can have two users, one for php-fpm, but owned by another that you sftp with.22:31
clackamasblackflow: self-modifying executables is a feature.  Not a fault ;)22:31
blackflowclackamas: I forget! :)22:31
bonsaitreeIt seems that while experimenting with the intel wireless drivers for Linux, i deleted something essential, and now my wireless card won't even show while running 'iwconfig'. Are there any generic wireless drivers that i can install via apt-get or what is the name of the iwlwifi package, since apt-get can't find a package named 'iwlwifi'. Thanks in advance.22:34
naccbonsaitree: why are you using intel wireless drivers?22:35
bonsaitreenacc:Well i guess those are the ones that should be used, idk?22:36
naccbonsaitree: drivers come with the kernel22:36
naccbonsaitree: what do you mean by "experimenting with the intel wireless drivers"? I assuem that means something not from Ubuntu22:36
naccbonsaitree: and if, so, why?22:36
nacc*if so, why22:36
clackamasbonsaitree: apt-get --fix-missing install22:37
adrian_1908black: Thanks for the input, I'll have to think more about that. I'm setting up a flat-file CMS and I think it'll be writing files all over the place, so granting permissions selectively might be very tedious. Making "admin" member of the "php-user" group wouldn't be much better than giving admin group ownership directly I guess.22:37
adrian_1908(blackflow) so many Black* here ;)22:38
blackflowadrian_1908: just not THE actual "admin" user, I hope22:38
bonsaitreenacc:I was deleting the 'ucode' files, and wanted to insert a fresh one into /lib/firmware. There were many there, so i deleted them all, and replaced with one version. I have done that because my wireless link stability has decreased over the last 2 weeks, and i wanted to try to fix that.22:38
naccbonsaitree: ugh22:39
naccbonsaitree: so you found a bunch of microcode files and deleted them all?22:39
clackamasbosaitree: or sudo dpk-reconfigure kernel-package22:39
naccbonsaitree: so probably you deleted the microcode needed (firwmare) for your driver22:39
naccclackamas: i think it's the linux-firmware package22:40
bonsaitreenacc:Yes, but i think that those were just previous firmwares for the driver22:40
naccbonsaitree: they are not.22:40
blackflowadrian_1908: then your simplest use case is to have one user you run php-fpm as, and sftp to. Thought I'd recommend separating owner of executables from the user who runs fpm, if at all possible.22:40
bonsaitreenacc:Well, i made a mistake then22:40
naccbonsaitree: and even if they were, why did you think you knew better than the package maintainers?22:40
donofriointerface doesn't support scanning?22:40
naccbonsaitree: and what bother is it to you if there are older ones there?22:40
naccbonsaitree: it doesn't make any sense what you did! :)22:40
naccbonsaitree: i think you just need to `apt install linux-firmware` with maybe a flag to reinstall22:41
bonsaitreenacc:Well i had a thought that newer == better, was not sure which version is used. Not very wise i see :)22:41
adrian_1908blackflow: ok, I'll ponder on that and return if I have more questions. thanks!22:41
naccbonsaitree: i'm 99% sure those numbers are not age, they are models22:41
naccbonsaitree: so you just deleted all firmware for all intel wireless cards22:42
nacc!latest | bonsaitree: also, this is generally good advice22:42
ubottubonsaitree: also, this is generally good advice: Packages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. Post-release updates are only considered if they are fixes for security vulnerabilities, high impact bug fixes, or unintrusive bug fixes with substantial benefit. See also !backports, !sru, and !ppa.22:42
bonsaitreenacc:I see22:42
bonsaitreenacc:But if they are the firmwares for different models, how does that affect my single card?22:43
naccbonsaitree: you deleted them all22:43
naccbonsaitree: and presumably didn't put a firmware back in that supports your card22:43
bonsaitreenacc:But i replaced the one intended for my card, and it still doesn't work22:43
naccbonsaitree: did you rebuild the initramfs?22:43
bonsaitreenacc:Nope, i thought just inserting the ucode is enough :D22:44
naccbonsaitree: did you look in dmesg to see if the firmware loaded?22:44
clackamasbosaitree: you need to run dpkg-reconfigure linux-firmware22:44
kokoOerHeks: thank you; driver problem fixed; you are my superhero man; thank you22:44
bonsaitreeclackamas:Okay, will do that now22:44
naccclackamas: i'm not sure that will do anything22:45
naccclackamas: as the package contents have been removed22:45
naccclackamas: it might, i'm just not sure22:45
clackamasbonsaitree: that should download any missing files and make sure they are configured correctly.22:45
naccdpkg does not download anything22:45
clackamasnacc:  I should work.    That is what underlies 'apt-get --fix-missing' if memory serves me correctly.22:45
naccclackamas: right, because *apt* downloads things22:46
bonsaitreeclackamas:So first apt-get --fix-missing, and after that dpkg-reconfigure linux-firmware?22:47
clackamasif you do apt-get  install --fix-missing linux-firmware kernel-package22:49
clackamasthat should should do everything you need.22:49
bonsaitreeclackamas:Okay, thanks22:49
bonsaitreeclackamas:So it turns out that even Linux has a "write this if you mess it up" command :D22:50
clackamaswell, ubuntu does.22:51
bonsaitreeclackamas:Isn't that a generic command? But i guess it's connected with the repositories..?22:51
nacclinux != ubuntu/debian22:52
bonsaitreenacc:Yes yes, my bad.. :)22:52
naccapt only exists on the later, not in all linux, which i think was clackamas' point22:52
clackamasnacc: was correct reminding me that apt actually downloads stuff.22:52
bonsaitreenacc:Mhm22:52
clackamasI have been using RHEL too much lately.22:52

hxegonclackamas: I don't have personal experience, but I've heard terrible stuf about system76's laptops22:55
clackamashxegon: yeah, I keep hearing stuff.  And the google searches seemed manipulated.  At least with Dell Precision, I get a 3 year warrnety.22:56

donofriokenrin, seen in dmesg that this interface doesn't support scanning?23:02
CorsairXHi all, I'm having some issues installing Ubuntu server with a software RAID23:05
CorsairXI'm able to install ok but the computer is not able to see a bootable device (besides the USB key) after rebooting23:05
bonsaitreeclackamas:Nope, 'iwconfig' won't show the built-in wireless card23:06
kenrinThat is strange,  you sure "sudo rfkill list all" doesn't show any blocks ?23:07
bonsaitreekenrin:Nope, :no at software and hardware blocks23:08
clackamasbonsaitree: look in dmesg and also look through 'lsmod' to see if your wifi is there.23:08
kenrinWas talking to donofrio~23:09
kenrin=)23:09
kenrinYou might just need better drivers installed,  i have no idea.  Macs are strange but it should use the b43 firmware23:09
bonsaitreekenrin:Oh, okay :)23:09
bonsaitreeclackamas:For which module should i search for?23:12

schultzaif i seperate /usr, how much space does /usr and / need?23:52
=== Zren_ is now known as Zren
=== wxl is now known as lubot
naccschultza: why are you separating /usr?23:55
naccschultza: sizing it wrong will be painful to fix23:55
=== lubot is now known as wxl
schultzanot if you are using LVM23:56
naccschultza: which you didn't say (or not say)23:56
naccbut even so, why do it?23:56
schultzaand it's standard practice for red hat students... / needs space to run... /usr is pretty much programs that will run on top of gnu/linux23:56
nacc... and you're on ubuntu23:56
naccrhel can do whatever it wants, it's overhead and unnecessary afaict23:57
schultzaim on gnu/linux23:57
naccschultza: you're not on ubuntu?23:57
schultzared hat and ubuntu are different distros of the same thing23:57

hfpHi, I am using GNOME-terminal ans whenever there is a URL, the cursor changes into a hand pointer but I have to right click and "Open URL". Is this the only way?23:57
naccschultza: separating /usr because RHEL does it is not really a very good answer23:57
schultzaubuntu doesnt need the guis in /usr to run.. command line will work with /usr seperated23:57
naccschultza: i have no idea why you are mentioning that23:57
schultzadoesnt matter my reasoning for why... how much space does it need and recommend?23:58
naccschultza: we don't separate /usr in ubuntu by default, so there is no recommendation23:58
naccand it needs what it uses23:58
schultzafine... ill installed it by default and do  a du on that damn dir myself... later.23:58
naccwhich will be exactly the size after installation, not the size after you do anything23:59
naccagain, it seems like overhead and completely unnecessary23:59
naccschultza: if you are asking what a particular user's /usr is size wise, mine is up to 9GB23:59
naccschultza: but that has nothing to do with recommendations or otherwise23:59
