anamikHi, could someone help me here I am having some issues trying to install anything essentially I tried to installed Kali linux tools to my ubuntu-mate using Katoolin and after that everything went bad... also before this I had kali install which changed the bootloader now when i am trying to install ubuntu via USB nothing happens00:37
Spaceboywhat do your bios look like?00:37
anamikim new to linux and all would really appreciate any help that I can get I searched around google already cant seem to find any fix00:37
anamikbios is the normal one from HP00:38
anamiki set it up so that USB loads first etc as well00:38
anamikturned on legacy mode etc as instructed00:38
Spaceboydo you only have a usb of your OS?00:38
anamikinitially when i was trying to install ubuntu-mate it worked just fine00:38
anamikwell I am trying to just install ubuntu-desktop normal one00:39
anamikbut i tried and just cant figure out the issue00:39
Spaceboydo you have any access to the terminal?00:39

SpaceboyYou say everything has gone bad, do you no longer have an OS?00:40
anamikumm no it loads up kali screen and says ubuntu-mate for selection of OS and advanced mode which loads up grub 2 or something00:40
anamiki have an os but i cant seem to be able to install anything00:40

anamikif i can honestly just wipe this out and start over that would be awesome00:51

SpaceDeliveryBoyhe has usb boot issues00:52
anamikbut when i load up a bootable USB of ubuntu it just does not do load up to install00:52
anamikit jumps to OS selection screen and jumps into ubuntu-mate itself00:52
bazhanganamik, first things first, let's get a proper usb installer00:52
anamikok so the way i created the usb installer is by using the dd command00:53
anamikas i read online atleast00:53
bazhanganamik, that means following this ONE issue to its completion, then on to the next00:53
anamikok00:53
transhuman_never mind I will use dd and FreeDosUSB image00:54
anamikshould i use dd command to create a bootable usb again or some other method?00:54
bazhanganamik, if you are going to go the route of adding odd unsupported things like debian repos, etc, that will not be supported here00:54
anamikoh it was not my intension at all00:55
bazhanganamik, ditto with some odd blogs recommending this that or the other00:55
anamikjust new to linux so i guess i "played" to much00:55

zueore@Ben64 switching to xfce from unity does make any difference?06:35
zueore@Ben64 if not i'll go back to arch linux06:36
alkisgzueore: distributions don't matter much; software does matter. What desktop environment were you using on arch? Use the same on Ubuntu too. `ps aux|grep chromium` will tell you how much RAM chromium uses; this is unrelated to ubuntu.06:37
zueore@alkisg when I turn on ubuntu, the ram usage will be at 700-800mb range. is this common?06:40
alkisgzueore: if you boot ubuntu to unity, and open a terminal, ram usage should be lower than 500 mb afaik06:41
alkisgAlthough I'm using mate, which uses 200 mb, so I'm not sure about unity, let me test...06:41
zueore@alkisg how about removing compiz? is that essential for unity?06:43
alkisgzueore: I get 665 used when I boot unity+gnome-terminal06:43
alkisgzueore: yes, compiz is essential for unity06:43
alkisgAnd it wouldn't make too much difference06:43
alkisgIf you want to save 300 MB RAM or so, use a lighter DE06:43
alkisgThis won't affect chromium mem usage06:43
zueore@alkisg xfce will do fine?06:44
alkisgIf you disable zeitgeist, deja-dup and other software that doesn't do much useful stuff, unity will be fine as well06:44
alkisgLast time I measured ram in xfce was 3 years ago, it was similar to mate06:45
alkisgSo yes it should be lighter06:45
alkisgAh the 665 RAM now was not a valid measurement because apt-daily was install things06:45
alkisgIt'll be less with unity too, let me reboot the VM and see...06:46

alkisgEesh compiz uses 280 mb ram, you were right there...06:49
* alkisg is glad to have avoided compiz all those years06:49
alkisgAlso the gnome-software service wastes a lot of ram06:49
alkisgIt's a pitty that they run it on login to save time later on, in case someone wants to use gnome-software06:50
alkisgIt's becoming windows! Nightmare! :D06:50

zueore@alkisg haha! yea.06:53
zueoreseriously i need to get rid of this.06:53
alkisgzueore: note that most of those are related to gnome, not to ubuntu06:53
alkisgzueore: booting an ubuntu-mate 16.04 VM => 262 RAM with mate-terminal open06:54
alkisgIt's 400 MB less06:54
fubHi. I'm using xubuntu 16.04 on a laptop. When attached to an external screen, I can close the lid and the external monitor stays on. However, the external monitor does not become the "primary" monitor. The "Primary display" settings seems to do nothing in the options.06:55
zueore@alkisg i dont want a reinstall. if i do that for arch. i read some where that unity is tightly bound to ubuntu. removing unity will make unstable ubuntu?06:56
fubI only can set the external to "primary" (so that the menu appears there) when I disable the laptop screen06:56
fubBut when I display the laptop screen and close the lid, ubuntu goes to suspend..06:56
fubAny ideas what I can do here?06:56
alkisgzueore: installing multiple desktop environments is _supposed_ to work properly, but some times you'll get services from unity running under xfce because of bugs. So, for minimal ram, reinstallation would be better06:56

spugI just did an aptitude update;aptitude safe-upgrade, and now my Xorg fails to load my nvidia module for nvidia-375... any ideas how to resolve on 16.04.2?10:37
k1lspug: where there any issues on installing?10:37
spugNo, I even did a aptitude reinstall nvidia-375 and a dkms status and all looked fine.10:38
spugthe nvidia kernel module shows up in /proc/drivers/nvidia/ and populates it.10:39
spugI think it's just Xorg that's having problems.10:39
k1lspug: so the Xorg.0.log will tell you whats happening10:39
spugk1l: It's a bit terse, is there a way to increase the verbosity using startx -- or something similar?10:40
spugk1l: [    40.666] (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)10:40
k1lspug: dont use startx. start the lightdm on ubuntu.10:40
minimecspug: What are your symptoms? Do you get a black screen during boot? Can you boot to recovery and then 'coninue normal boot?10:40
k1lspug: that is why i asked if there were issues on installing. like failing modules10:40
spugk1l: the text console is fine, it's purely when X is trying to launch.10:41
k1lspug: which makes sense, since the text console doesnt need the 3d module to work10:41
spugI can ssh into the box, it's multiuser and i can run startx.10:41
minimecspug: I have to put 'nomodeset' in my grub config to get my gtx1060 going. Otherwise I it fails to load the graphical environment.10:42
spugwhich generates a new Xorg.0.log each time...10:42
spugk1l: [    40.666] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module nvidia10:42
k1lspug: looks to me there was an issue isntalling the latest kernel and compiling the modules10:42
spugSo, this has been working until today's update... why would I need to use nomodeset today?10:43

poorUserHi people! I have an issue with an usb3 controller. It randomly dies when something is plugged on. With 16.04 i did a simple script to workaround this problem, echo "0000:04:00.0" | tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/xhci_hcd/unbind and then rebind it. Now with 16.10 the system freezes and i need to use the power button to shutdown. Does anyone have any suggestion?10:56
spugk1l: no joy with previous kernel, will see if there is an even older one10:56
k1lzealsham_: the upgrade works. it gets automated testings from ubuntu. there are just some parts like PPA packages or old amd fglrx installs that might need manual work10:56

BluesKajminimec, have you checked launchapad for nvidia-375 bugs10:58
BluesKajminimec, launchpad even10:58
spugk1l, there are heaps of older kernels, I'll keep trying a few but I suspect the update of the nvidia-current package has broken things, trying 4.4.0-67 now.10:59
minimecBluesKaj: I never checked for bugs. As I said, I changed my 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT' and got my card going. So I had no reason to check for bugs. But if you tell me that my card would run better and smoother, I might consider a downgrade... ;)11:00
poorUserminimec: not yet, i don't think to have a lot of options in the bios, i'll try later!11:00
spugk1l: no joy, the kernel boots, mentions plymouth, then the screen goes black, as xorg tries to find the missing nvidia module and then returns to the text console.11:01

spugk1: so I decided to run locate to search for nvidia_drv.so.11:14

alkisgscuba_steve: so you see that the system has booted without any error messages? Paste the output of dmesg and syslog, after such a failed boot13:40
alkisgscuba_steve: btw, of course you only remove the monitor, not the graphics card, right?13:40

riesHey Guys, I am rather old school in this, with so many start/top deamons around… and Ubuntu using different versions, how can I ask the OS if I use upstart /init.d/rc… or whatever else is nowdays invented?15:39
naccries: 14.04 uses upstart, 16.04+ uses systemd15:40
tgm4883ries: use 'service <servicename> start/stop/restart'15:40
riesnacc: tgm4883 okie dokie, thanks...15:40
Harry12https://pastebin.com/Q486p9ML15:42
naccHarry12: i get a different message, it's uninstallable in 16.0415:42
riesnacc: or tgm4883 I have two (apparently not) the same systems.. when I run : service postgresql status for one system I get a one liner (9.4/main (port 5432): online) for my other system I get https://pastebin.com/0DwSXEFN why is this?? /me confused15:42
tgm4883ries: systemd vs upstart15:43
Harry12nacc: there are some requirements as having install ROS first15:43
naccHarry12: can you pastebin `apt policy qt57creator-plugin-ros` ?15:43
naccHarry12: this is what I get: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24320935/15:43
tgm4883ries: what are you actually trying to do?15:43
riestgm4883: but lsb_release -a reports I am at Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS for both systems… I think one was upgraded…15:44
riescan that mean that a upgraded system will still use the old upstart?15:44
Harry12nacc: I got this apt policy qt57creator-plugin-ros15:44
tgm4883ries: IDK then.15:44

naccHarry12: wait, did you not add the ppa you're trying to use?15:45

Harry12nacc: Im using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:levi-armstrong/qt-libraries-xenial    AND sudo add-apt-repository ppa:levi-armstrong/ppa15:46
ioriaHarry12, sudo apt update15:47
Sinned_ries: stupid question maybe, but both of your postgres shit, is version 9.4? Or are you using 9.5 on the other box?15:47
Harry12done it and same issue15:47
naccHarry12: don't be selective in your pastebinning. Pastebin entire output15:47
ioriaHarry12,  apt cache policy  qt57creator-plugin-ros15:47
naccries: you would need to reboot the upgraded system for it to swtich, iirc -- has it been rebooted since upgrading?15:48
riesSinned_: the idea was to be using PostgreSQL 9.4, I did a dist-upgrade and that apparently upgarded PostgreSQL from 9.4 to 9.5.. and it didn;t start PG after the update… I am confused as it should never update postgresql to a newer version.15:48
riesnacc: it was not re-booted15:48
Sinned_ries: it looks to me you got 1 instance of 9.5 running idd, which is the one with multiple lines15:49
riesSinned_: correvt15:49
Sinned_so, that would explain the difference in the output of status15:49
naccries: where did you run dist-upgrade? which version?15:49
riesnacc: on both of them, to get rid of the message that there are security updates.. unless I mis-understand, that’s the only way to get them in15:50
naccries: postgresql-9.4 is only i 15.04 which is eol15:50
naccries: i don't have the context, please answer with versions15:50
naccpostgresql-9.5 is in 16.04 and 16.1015:50
Harry12nacc: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24320960/15:51
riesnacc: I think we got 9.4 from backports… asking my DB guy right now15:51
naccHarry12: using ports.ubuntu.com -- not x86?15:51
naccries: uh ... so again, which ubuntu version?15:51
naccries: it's not in backports eitehr15:51
riesnacc: I am at Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS for both servers15:52
Harry12nacc: m it is not an x86 is a arm Nvidia TX115:52
naccuh, then it definitely wouldn't be in backports15:52
Sinned_ries and nacc correct me if im wrong, but doing an upgrade to 16.04.2 wil upgrade postgres aswell, not?15:52
naccries: can you start over and tell me what you did and what is going on? still feel like i'm missing context15:53
naccries: if you're on 16.04, it's totally expected to be on pg 9.515:53
tgm4883Sinned_: yes15:53
Sinned_Yes idd, and he seems to be stuck on 9.4 ?15:53
naccSinned_: and yes15:53
tgm4883nacc: half upgrade maybe?15:53
Sinned_strange lol15:53
nacctgm4883: yeah if one of the two didn't fully upgrade, the it's possible the old pg is still around15:53
Harry12mmm, sure , I iwll need to get the source and compile it from scratch15:53
naccHarry12: right, that ppa only builds for amd64 and i38615:54
naccHarry12: problem solved :)15:54
Harry12nacc: cool, I'm feel silly, Thanks mate15:55
naccHarry12: general hint (as we get lots of reports) -- more, concise information is better. If you had said "I am trying to use this PPA <insert PPA> on arm", would have been able to tell you the problem immediately :)15:55

darkad  grub2-common liblightdm-gobject-1-0 lightdm shim shim-signed23:02
darkadnow after grub choice I have a blank screen23:02
Bashing-omdarkad: From the grub boot menu, what results when booting a recovery kernel ?23:05
darkadif I disable the quite splash I see that the last operation is the loading of lightdm23:05
bekks!nomodeset | darkad23:05
ubottudarkad: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter23:05
naccdarkad: what version of ubuntu23:06
darkadsorry nacc 16.04.0223:06

TejaHi Guys, can any one help me with setting up nfs on ubuntu 16.04 . I followed the guide at https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/network-file-system.html23:13
Tejaand upon trying to connect from the client I get an error "mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting"23:13
wadadliOk so the memory tests have all passed so far — version 5 and up support UEFI boot.23:14
TejaI tried telnet to the port 2049 and it doesn't seem to be a firewall issue23:14
fermulatoroi, if I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 server ... shouldn't a do-release-upgrade indicate that there /is/ an update available?23:14
fermulator$ sudo do-release-upgrade23:14
fermulatorChecking for a new Ubuntu release23:15
fermulatorNo new release found23:15
naccfermulator: depends on what you put in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades iirc23:16
Bashing-omfermulator: ^^ what returns ' grep Prompt= /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades ' ?23:17
fermulatorPrompt=lts23:17
tomreynTeja: "access denied" is a response by the server (i.e. two way communication succeeded), and asuggests you are running into an authentication issue.23:17
fermulatorouch, figured it out23:17
fermulatorI /had/ apt-cache configured, and then just removed apt-cacher23:17
fermulatorapparently "can't check" (in this scenario) is returned as, "no updates" ;/23:18
Bashing-omfermulator: :)23:18
Tejatomreyn, my export file has only one line23:26
Teja"/home/nin       *(rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)"23:26
Tejabut i dont know where I am getting an authentication issue23:27
Tejaeverything seems so straight forward but I am getting a server authentication issue23:27

gamesterAnyone have an estimation for how many people maintain the packages in ubuntu's main repo? I'm just curious.23:53
dar123i am getting an error 'floating point exception' while using odbc. Any fix23:53
naccgamester: there are 87 core devs currently, if that helps23:55
naccgamester: and 205 ubuntu devs23:56
naccgamester: not sure if that recurses properly for the count via teams23:57
