Dustini probably sound stupid for asking, ive never actually used ubuntu before this new pc i just bult on a budget, whats a ppa?04:16
Jordan_UDustin: That article is from 2013. That was a long time ago in technology time.04:16
Dustinah okay i didnt notice that04:16
Jordan_UDustin: Here's one from this year: https://itsfoss.com/best-video-editing-software-linux/04:16
PipeItToDevNullPersonal something something, basically a personal repository. People make them and you add them to your system so those packages can be found by apt04:16
Dustini am downloading audacity and some other thing from a repo so you guys solved my issue anyways04:17
israphialHi. Looking for a way to make my panel in Ubuntu (unity) 16.04 COMPLETELY transparent and clear. Even after messing with unity tweaker and compiz, it is still a shaded blue color, although it is pretty transparent,04:18
Dustintanks guys see ya around04:18
israphialI would like to completely eliminate all shading and color in it, but unity tweaker and compiz don't do that.04:18
israphialThe help threads I've found on this matter refer to much older versions of ubuntu so I don't want to use them in fear of using an outdated method, I'd rather ask an up to date source like this channel.04:19

Prototipthe iso images from old-releases are pretty small.. so I'd guess not.09:19
Prototipalexxio: if you have installed tools to build packages, then you can build a client of that old version yourself. if not, your only chance is to upgrade09:23

dreamcat4so i'm assuming i should install gnome-desktop on / after a clean ubuntu 16.04 desktop install?09:44
rcfcvHello. I have made a script a that greps certain IP from a file, and I now want to add to some numbers to the greped IPs so that I can ping them. I want to add 127 and 253 to the end of the greped IPS. Any tips on how to do that?09:44
dreamcat4and not bother setting up unity anymore?09:44
lotuspsychjedreamcat4: the plans are that 18.04 will come with gnome shell by default09:45
dreamcat4wonder what's going to happen to the ubuntu live patch service now, since that is based on snap pkgs09:46
dreamcat4have recently started using that09:47
lotuspsychje!livepatch | dreamcat409:47
ubottudreamcat4: Canonical Livepatch is a service offered by Canonical for 64 bit 16.04 installs that modifies the currently running kernel for updates without the need to restart. More information can be found at http://ubottu.com/y/livepatch and https://www.ubuntu.com/server/livepatch09:47

dreamcat4i don't know. maybe because snap doesnt fit with flatpack / wayland, which is what other linux distros are moving to?09:49
dreamcat4and because ubuntu is axing MIR now too?09:49

soupnanodesukarWhy don't my GTK apps have thumbnails in their file picker?09:56
k1l_dreamcat4: unity is still supported. and it will be for the support timeframe. its just that there is no new effort in development from canonical. livpatch service is not touched by any of the recent announcments at all. so i dont know what you mean10:02
Adam3Thanks k1l_ for clearing the AIR10:03

no_gravityHello! I read that Ubuntu Unity is dead? Does that mean Ubuntu will get a real task bar again?10:06
MustaKrakishGnome 310:07
no_gravityIIRC Gnome 3 has no taskbar either.10:07
k1l_no_gravity: ubuntu will change to gnome-shell as standard desktop on 18.04.10:07
no_gravityk1l_: I see. I can't work with those desktops. I try every year or so for a few days and then return to a distro with a taskbar.10:09
k1l_no_gravity: which is not needed, since ubuntu ships a ton of other desktops10:09
nimo1Good afternoon10:10
no_gravityk1l_: Could be. But there also was that "we send your keystroke to the net" incident which I found disturbing.10:10
k1l_no_gravity: which is not true10:11
k1l_no_gravity: especially when you dont use unity.10:11
no_gravityk1l_: "Not true especially whan..." :)10:11
k1l_no_gravity: i doubt you call your browser "spyware" when it sends your "keystrokes" to the internet, when you put them in the "online search" field.10:12
k1l_no_gravity: but i guess your trolling attempt did not work, and we can focus again on technical support :)10:12

dreamcat4ok so as a new user to ubuntu 16.04, should i install the official ubuntu + gnome desktop, or would i be better off installing "Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.2" instead? given that i am not going to be bothering with unity now anymore10:21
k1l_dreamcat4: you still can use unity. no need to be over dramatic about the recent announcment.10:22
dreamcat4i mean, given that i may wish to upgrade the 16.04 installation --> 18.04 in 2 years time?10:22
dreamcat4k1l_: i'm not being dramatic, i just dont see the point (as a brand new user) to invest time configuring something which isn't gonig to be supported in 2 years. wheras if i just jump in with gnome now, there won't be any awkward transition period for me to deal with later on.10:23

MustaKrakishikonia, cos it sorted my issue yesterday10:40
nanodronehow do i assign custom shell script to the power button?10:40
ikoniais your issue the same as his ? what would the re-install do to fix it ?10:40
MustaKrakishno idea, it just fixed it10:40
ikoniais the actual problem even understood at this stage ?10:40
ikoniaso have you any reason to think a re-install of pulse will fix this guys issue10:40
MustaKrakishit's just a suggestion10:41
ikoniais the actual problem even understood at this stage ?10:41
MustaKrakishhe doesn't get sound even when all levels in alsamixer are up10:41
MustaKrakishwith automute disabled aswell10:41
ikoniaright - so do we know why, do we know what component isn't working, are there any pointers to suggest where the problem is10:41
ikoniaor is the diags as simple as "audio not working" - "reinstall pulse audio and reboot"10:42
MustaKrakishmy guess is pulse but that's why im suggesting he do that first, if not then it's something else10:42
ikoniaso you're first step in diagnosing a problem is to reinstall a random component10:42
MustaKrakishits not random10:42
ikoniaok - it's fine, I just wanted to understand where this approach was coming from10:42
MustaKrakishhow is pulseaudio a random component when it's about sound?10:42
ikoniaMustaKrakish: it is random - what is leading you to believe the problem is pulse (I'm not saying it's not)10:42
ikoniaMustaKrakish: because you have no idea if pulse is a problem or not,10:43
MustaKrakishikonia, just curious that it might be10:43
ikoniaa kernel module is to do with sound10:43
ikoniathe volume app is to do with sound10:43
ikoniaalsa is to do with sound10:43
MustaKrakishmy next suggestion would have been to see what modules are loaded at boot10:43
ikoniashould that not be the first thing to do10:43
MustaKrakisheh, swings and roundabouts10:43
ikonianot really10:43
MustaKrakishok bor, you win10:44

nanodronecan you guys fight in private lol10:44

nanodroneokay...10:45
MustaKrakishikonia, I got told to purge PulseAudio by one of the dudes in here before to sort out the issue10:46
MustaKrakishafter I installed it again it all worked fine10:46
MustaKrakishI had very similar issues too10:46

gardonNow even chromium dont work10:50

ikoniaregdude: so your problem is the installer13:21

jaawerthrd45: no, I'm with you - when you want to ensure stability, doing a clean install is best. But then, if you want to ensure stability, you'd only use LTS :D13:22
rd45ducasse what packages do you remove13:22
ducasserd45: i remove anything from ppas13:22
rd45jaawerth I should probably just run LTS and update regularly13:22

ubottufsck is the FileSystem ChecKer, which runs automatically when you boot if you didn't shutdown cleanly. Type "man fsck" for information on running it manually. The command "sudo touch /forcefsck && sudo shutdown -r now" will force a reboot and a filesystem check; "sudo touch /fastboot" will skip a filesystem check at next reboot19:48

kudhi guys21:56
k1l_Jordan_U: it will "fix" it :)21:56
Jordan_Uk1l_: I can't think of a good way to "fix" the fact that the filesytem is frozen other than booting Windows and completely shutting it down.21:57
jennieok i am trying tomreyn shift trick21:58
k1l_Jordan_U: its not that windows is hibernated on purpose. it uses this "not clean unmount" technic to let the reboot time fasten up a bit. you need to deactivate it in the settings manually.21:58
kuddoes anyone know how to remove half-installed software on Ubuntu?21:59

kudand got an error so it didnt install22:00
Jordan_Uk1l_: I know you need to deactivate it in Windows' settings. But you're not recommending that, you're recommending using ntfsfix. If the system is hibernated then at best ntfsfix will do nothing, at worst it will clear the dirty bit which would be a very bad thing. (And in the medium case it will flip the bit to trigger a chkdsk at next boot unecessarily).22:00
nacckud: use actual ubuntu packages or `checkinstall` or something22:00

bradleyJordan_U: i get a message that says "processing" but nothing happens (but i can print from other computers)22:02
k1l_Jordan_U: yes. if the windows was really hibernated, it would run the fsck on next windows boot. imho, the ntfsfix is a good thing to be able to mount windows partitions while not having slower boot times on windows.22:04
bradleyJordan_U: and i try to print something else from ubuntu the print dialogue box says: "Unable to locate printer SECxxxxx.local"22:05
Jordan_Uk1l_: Why would you want to run chkdsk at the next boot when there is nothing wrong with the filesystem? How des that help you mount the partition without having slower boot times on windows? Now instead of just rebooting and holding shift to shut down Windows you have to reboot, wait for chkdsk to complete, *and* hold down shift when shutting down Windows.22:06
runessaHi guys!22:06
k1l_Jordan_U: because 1) who ever said that system is in hibernation? one can assume its the standard win10 fake shutdown where ntfsfix works 2) ntfsfix works now, no reboot needed22:08
Jordan_Uk1l_: Windows fake shutdown *is* hibernation.22:09
k1l_Jordan_U: no it isnt22:09
bradleyJordan_U: do i need to install special samsung drivers? i don't remember doing that in the past22:09
k1l_Jordan_U: its just handling the partitions as if it was hibernation22:10
Jordan_Uk1l_: No, it's logging off all users then hibernating. It's much more about the OS than it is about the filesystem. See https://www.howtogeek.com/243901/the-pros-and-cons-of-windows-10s-fast-startup-mode/22:11
Jordan_Uk1l_: If ntfsfix allows you to mount a partition from a "fasboot" hibernated Windows then I consider that dangerous, and hopefully ntfsfix can be fixed to disallow such usage.22:12
jenniethanks guys i got the windows mounted with shift shutdown22:12
bradleyJordan_U: oh, and i get a dialogue bubble that says error connecting to device when i try to print22:12
k1l_Jordan_U: that is exactly what ntfsfix is made for22:12
