israphialHello. I'm looking to modify the global icons of my Ubuntu 16.04 install but I really don't know how this process works. I want to edit the icons that nautilus uses (like what folders look like in the GUI) and what my dock uses. I think the ones that are currently available are pretty ugly.00:15
israphialI have both unity tweaker tool and compiz installed and I know how to use both of them.00:15
deanTrying to install MySQL-python in a virtualenv but get the error message: OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages'  This doesn't make sense. It shouldn't be touching my main python install should it?00:15
kwantisraphial, hi, you can do it through the unity tweak tool, but you need to install an icon pack00:16
israphialI think I would like to make my own icons.00:16
israphialCould you tell me where the currently installed icon packs on my system are installed so I can emulate their filestructure and such?00:17
deanisraphial: /usr/share/icons00:17
mncedisihow to change my unity desktop, wanna install Mac OS X look, which ppa can i terminal00:18
iseneAnybody here with a macbook pro that can give me a hand?00:18
israphialThanks dean and kwant!00:18
israphialUgh my nautilus has been laggy and crashy today and I don't know why.00:20
israphialIt just crashes after a while. Which is kind of disturbing.00:20
kwantisraphial, it can be simpler than that, there are icon packs in the default software repo, for example, check the numix icon theme mentioned here: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/10/things-to-do-after-installing-ubuntu-16-1000:20
israphialkwant: I have several icon packs installed already actually. I would like to make my own though. Or, at least find one according to my own taste.00:20
israphialI'm not a big fan of most I've seen. I was thinking of taking the circular design of the Numix circle icons and converting them into a transparent, line-based circular icon pack.00:21
kwantisraphial, browse thought that article that I've linked and also through the "Themes" section of that website and you should find quite a few00:21
deanisraphial: Check out super flat remix: https://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Super+flat+remix+icon+theme?content=16907300:21
kwantisraphial, through*00:21
israphialSimilar to the icons shown here: https://i.imgur.com/J4Wi8ixl.png @ dean and kwant00:22
kwantisraphial, sorry, can't help much with making your own icons, but I can show you places where to find finished ones and how to install00:22
israphialYep that's why I wanted to know where the icons are stored. I think what I'm going to do is copy an existing icon pack's file/folder directory, rename it, and redo all of the icons within it so that the filesystem footwork is done for me.00:23
israphialOnce I'm done editing all of the icons I want to edit, I can apply the theme with unity tweak tool like I would any other pack.00:24
israphialAnd, now that you've shown me where the icon packs are stored, I can do exactly that. :)00:24

israphialI'd be willing to bet that there are icon packs out there like what I'm describing already but I dont have the data to sort through thousands of images trying to find them unfortunately. Lol00:26
israphialI actually really like how screenspace-conservative unity is tbh. I've ran Ubuntu GNOME, Xubuntu, Debian, and Mint Cinnamon in vboxes and none of them are as sleek and space-saving as good ol unity with the ark-dark theme. imo.00:27

Some_Personbut it seems to me that auto login is pretty useless if you still have to enter a password07:04
EasyriderYou also have your $HOME directory encrypted which doesn't get unencrypted until you log in.07:04
EasyriderIf you don't want to enter a password then you do not want a secure system.  I don't know if you can decrypt a file system on the fly in Ubuntu.  You may have to rebuild the install to accomplish that.07:06
EasyriderBlitzerHound You'll have a difficult time running games with less than 3 Gig of RAM07:09
BlitzerHoundOh I see. o3o07:10
acoolernickBlitzerHound: I use Hardinfo for a GUI that covers a range of hardware info and some benchmarks, it's available in Ubuntu Software Center07:10
BlitzerHoundWell, still it's a big improvement from my 512MB ram lol07:10
BlitzerHoundI'll try that out acoolernick, thanks07:11
acoolernickBlitzerhound: 2.7 GiB is fine for most things, the system can run under 1 G, leaving at least another 1.7 for a game; more RAM is necessary for only the most intensive games, making videos, or running virtual machines07:13

Landeskogi have to run xrandr --output HDMI-1 --set underscan on   once i login to get it to fit07:39
Landeskogits at that resolution i should say it just doesnt fit the screen    until i run the xrandr --output HDMI-1 --set underscan on   so im looking for a way to make that run right off the bat i guess07:40

Landeskogwhen i start my pc now.    it boots to the grub menu because im dual booting windows 10.   the grub menu is 1920x1080 resolution perfect because i edited /etc/default/grub   but after i click kubuntu and i see the login screen   its at 1920x1080 but its to big for my screen if that makes sense       if it hit ctrl f1 or whatever it is to get to the cmd07:53
Landeskogprompt  tty1      it is also   in 1920x1080 but to big for the screen  but once i login your script activates and its good07:53

CorvusCoraxHi, On Unity Desktop, the windo manager responds to certain key combinations (like alt+F1, alt+F4, ...)  I am running a program (Milkytracker) that uses the same key combo for an internal feature/shortcut, but whenever I press the keys the window manager handles them instead of the application. Can I temporarily turn off all or most key combos handled by the window manager?09:37
nanodroneCorvusCorax, go to unity control center -> keyboard settings, you'll find the shortcuts there prolly under windows/navigation, reassign them or turn them off09:39
CorvusCorax@nanodrone, that would turn them off permanently, I'd have to re-assign each an every one of them back to what they were afterwards, wouldn't I?09:42
motieBad when programs use system key combos09:44
CorvusCoraxwell the thing is, every system has different key combos09:44
motieYes but still, you make a program on linux and make keycombos that conflicts with unity?09:47
CorvusCoraxwell that program was originally made for amigaOS, then ported to DOS, windows, OSX, linux, haiku and wince and android, while having the same key assignments09:48
CorvusCoraxu can't change the entire workflow just because one insignificant OS (or even less, just one window manager) decides to have that key combo for some system operation. if you took them all into account there'd no useable key combos left09:49
motiei can see that now, was looking it up. Looks cool, like from the old days. :;-)09:49
motie:-)09:49
Ben64CorvusCorax: so change it09:50
motieIt plays what wee called »Demo's« back then ??09:50
ducasseCorvusCorax: the best thing would be to permanently reassign those shortcuts in unity, as alt+key should be left for applications to use imo09:51
CorvusCoraxi had issues like that before with a 3d modelling program under IceWM, it used ctrl+shift+alt in different combos + cursor keys and mouse wheel for different editing motions in 3d. unfortunately some of them were used by icewm and not changeable. isn't there a way to tell a window on the Xserver to take precedence over manager while active?09:51
Ben64no09:51

CorvusCorax@motie, yeah, well a full fledged demo is more than just the music, but tracks are an essential part of demos09:52

sebsebsebstevehope: kind of off topic, but not so much.  Unity 8  and Ubuntu touch will continue at least for mobile under the main porter to phones it seems.   Unity 7 will probably just not be developed anymore.  and  Snaps works for Canonical from a commercial perspective with servers and clouds etc, partners, so that will stay probably09:56

zach_That is a really good question. I would believe so. Are you all excited for Gnome being the new default DE? lol13:13
stormcloudI haven't heard about that... I only use Ubuntu on a 32 bit Laptop. Everything else is Solus.13:15
k1lstormcloud: you are mixing kernel updates with release updates.13:16
ducassestormcloud: if you are on 16.04.2 now you will get .3 automatically, no matter what you select there.13:16

k1lstormcloud: and one should not block kernel updates. look at ubuntu.com/usn13:17

atf_Hi - I am having prblems witha  hybred graphics card. Tried lubuntu 16.04.02, ubuntu 16.04 and now 16.10. xjkxFor my problem, ""gdbus.error.org.freedesktop.dbus.error.serviceUnknown: The name org.gnome.Settings.Daemon was not provided by any .services files", I think I need to run gnome-settings-daemon, how do I do that?23:28
wedgieluxio: ubuntu doesn't configure the root user by default23:29
luxioi don't see why a user needs access to execute commands as root be default23:29
luxiowedgie: what why23:29
luxios/be/by23:29
wedgieluxio: design decision that was made long ago. I'm sure they had their reasons. Seems as reasonable as *only* configuring root to start with like some distros do.23:29
wedgieonly makes it less tempting to run *everything* as root because you didn't bother to create a non-root user23:30
OerHeksMrJones, i think you want cryptsetup ? http://askubuntu.com/questions/63594/mount-encrypted-volumes-from-command-line23:30
OerHeksfull chroot http://askubuntu.com/a/65346023:32
frazrHi, anyone know if theres a way to run an alias when spawning xterm?23:32
frazrlike xterm -e "alias;bash"23:32
frazrcan't seem to find it23:32
xjkxHow do I run gnome-settings-daemon, it doesnt run anything by typing just that in command line23:33
wedgiefrazr: can put it in your .bashrc maybe.23:33
frazri've put the alias inside .bashrc ofc23:33
frazrand i dont want to run it each time i open xterm, only when told so23:34
MrJonesOerHeks: I have absolutely no trouble mounting them, or creating the chroot23:34
frazr(i'm building a menu which fires xterm -e "aliastorun;bash")23:34
zzero1how do you stop a ffmpeg running command without corrupting the output file ?23:34
MrJonesOerHeks: I just don't manage to make a /etc/crypttab that actually works23:35
OerHeksMrJones, not sure how to write that; maybe you want to reask in #ubuntu-server too23:36
MrJonesOerHeks: what I asked is whether there is a tool that writes it for me23:36
MrJonesbecause I know the fedora installer does that23:36
MrJonesthe ubuntu one doesn't23:36
MrJones(not if you want to reuse existing partitions)23:36
MrJonesat this point the easiest choice seems to be to install fedora on top, copy the /etc/crypttab out then install ubuntu again >.>23:37

minimecxjkx: What window manager are you running?23:43
xjkxminimec: Openbox23:44
minimecxjkx: I use enlightenment and start a gnome-session at login. Give me a second...23:44
xjkxMaybe if I run gnome-session then?23:44
xjkxBut I dont want all those buttons of gnome23:45
xjkxI really dislike gnome, but if gnome-session is just like a background software, I could run it23:47

minimecxjkx: You can either just start 'gnome-settings-daemon &' in your openbox startup file or start a gnome-session with a costum session file. I run a custom e17.session with 'gnome-session --session=e17 &' with the following content... http://paste.ubuntu.com/24344314/23:48
Herbalisthow can i get back the copy files dialog that is running ?23:48
Herbalistit's not in the app switcher23:49
Herbalisti can see a small progressbar drawn on top of the Files cabinet in the sidebar23:50
minimecxjkx: I have to add that I also have 'gnome-flashback' installed...23:50
renloI have an SSD drive with a Windows 10 partition and 1 (or more) Ubuntu partitions. Generally how many partitions are there for an ubuntu install; 2 (/ and /home ?) also, how do you see which partitions are really used23:50
Herbalistbut if i click on it, it merely opens up my Home Folder23:50
minimecxjkx: You find your session files in '/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions'23:51
Herbalistif i right-click on it and choose the option "Show Copy Dialog", it doesn't do anything23:52
renloI am asking the above because while I am running Windows 10 I would like to be able to run a VM Ubuntu which points to my physical partition. I just attempted to do this by setting up a 'raw virtual disk' which pointed to my root Ubuntu partition. However, when I ran the VM, once it got to the login screen it crapped out23:53
renloIt showed GRUB which means it was definitely using my raw partition23:53
xjkxminimec: do I have to do it on startup file, or can I just run commands now?23:53
minimecxjkx: Running the command should do for a test...23:54
G6renlo: /home, / should do. Add in swap if you want23:55
rud0lfhello :)23:55
renloso, assuming I am attempting to run this in VBox, I would probably want to have my virtual disk use each of those partitions23:56
renlocorrect?23:56
renloeven swap too, right? I didnt mount swap which is probably why it crapped out23:56
xjkxminimec: alright, thanks23:56
MrJonesI literally cannot install ubuntu because the installer is too awful to allow reusing existing luks/lvm partitions, and unlocking them previously and installing directly to the crypt mappers means I need to write a /etc/crypttab that works manually or have it generated through other means23:57
minimecxjkx: No problem. Put the command in the autostart file, if you want it @ login '~/.config/openbox/autostart' --> http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Autostart23:57
MrJoneswith which I failed so far... any tools that could potentially help me?23:58
xjkxOk :)23:58
PipeItToDevNullMrJones, then use a distro with an installer that isnt "too awful"23:58
MrJonesPipeItToDevNull: are there any plans to fix this flaw though? this has been missing from the ubuntu installer for a really long time23:59
MrJones(while the fedora installer has had it since ~Fedora 18)23:59
G6renlo: unlikely, swap, you can do without23:59
