Gharudai'm wondering if maybe i am retarded17:44
Gharudaanny help whould be appreciated17:44
Gharudai am altho reluctand to share my screen with strangers on the webs17:44
Gharudaalso the utility to map the buttons on my wacom tablet is not working17:45

Gharudacan u helps me get jack workingz17:52
sinewavhello17:52
Gharudai dont undertand why it was to be so complicated17:52
sinewavI don't know much about Jack. What kind of problem are you having?17:53
GharudaIf i whould know what the problem is i whould't be here /D17:53
GharudaI cant get anny sound out of it17:53
Gharudamy interface shows up twice17:54
sinewavAre you launching it from the command line or Qjackctl?17:54
GharudaThere is no audio output17:54
GharudaI'm using Qjack17:54
sinewavyou are using an external or internal interface?17:55
GharudaExternal17:55
sinewavwhich model?17:55
Gharudaits an audio dj 8 from NI17:55
sinewavAH17:55
sinewavhold on.17:55
Gharudai can get my firefox strem to output thru my interface in sound settings17:56
Gharudaso i know its not a driver issue17:56
Gharudabut i dont think that uses jack17:56
sinewavFirst, it that device should show up twice. There should be two separate audio channels. Is one marked 1/2 and the other marked 3/4?17:57
sinewavThe Native Instruments gear should have class-compliant audio interfaces, which means you should have basic functionality, but special features might not be available and are sometimes dependent on the OS and native software.18:01
GharudaOne is listed as hW 218:01
sinewavno sound comes from either of them?18:01
Gharudaand t he other one as hw 2,018:01
Gharudawell i don't exactly now how to test that :D18:01
Gharudaas i'm also not sure if midi is working18:02
sinewavso, what happens when you start Jack from Qjackctl?18:02
sinewavDo you get an error?18:02
sinewavbrb, laundry...18:05
Gharudahello i'm back18:09
Gharudasystem froze18:09
GharudaShoudn't i just have the option to routz AUdio DS 8 channel 4 to chanel D ?18:11
sinewavSometimes Jack gets the numbers backwards.18:13
sinewavThat's how it is on my system. My 1/2 is actually my C/D18:13
sinewavWhat are you trying to play through Jack? system sounds?18:14
GharudaIn audio the ony writable clients are Pulse audio jack sourse and system18:14
Gharudaaudio dj 8 is not even mentioned18:14
Gharudaright now i have qsynth running18:14
sinewavWhich version of Qjackctl?18:15
Gharudabut i wanted to set up an effect on channel 318:15
GharudaTHe defaut one18:15
Gharudathat ships with studio18:15
sinewavSorry, I actually don't have Ubuntu Studio 16.04 installed right now. I'm using MATE until certain XFCE bugs get fixed.18:16
Gharudabuggs like ?18:16
sinewavIn the setup area, have you chosen an interface?18:16
Gharudayes18:17
sinewavwhich one?18:17
GharudaI picked Hw:Audio8DJ218:17
sinewavOK good. But the device doesn't show up in the "connections" list under audio?18:18
Gharudanope18:18
sinewavI see.18:18
Gharudaso nothing can be done then i gues ?18:19
sinewavAnd you don't get any messages when you start Qjackctl? There is a message window that should give you information18:19
Gharudanope18:19
Gharudaonly the JAck audio connection kit(default) start's18:20
sinewavwell that is very strange!18:20
sinewavOk, I haven't experienced a problem like this, but there are people better equipped to help. Are you familiar with linuxmusicians.com?18:21
GharudaNope18:21
Gharudai'll go ask over there then18:21
sinewavIt is a very active community. Pretty much the place to go for help with Linux Audio (because Linux Audio is a FUCKING NIGHTMARE)18:21
Gharudawhould you have anny idea how to get gtk-apps.org/content/show.php/Wacom+Control+Panel?content=104309 working :D18:21
sinewavYes, do that. Explain that you can choose the interface in Qjackctl but it does not show up in the connections window.18:22
sinewavOH GOD don't get me started on the WACOM problems....18:22
sinewavThe Wacom control panels only seems to work well under the Gnome Desktop Environment, not XFCE.18:23
GharudaFuck my life18:24
Gharudathis seemed so ideal :'(18:24
sinewavAlthough, the XFCE Wacom support is fairly good compared to other Linux distributions.18:24
sinewavYeah, Linux is fucking terrible for art and media. It sucks, I'm sorry.18:24
Gharudai dont wanne type shit to configure18:24
Gharudayeah but it runs houdini better then windows :D18:24
Gharudaand audio drivers are better18:25
Gharudaplug and play whould be nice tho18:25
Gharuda:D18:25
sinewavI actually use Windows audio software in Linux under WINE18:25
Gharudai'd like to learn to program and help with that18:25
Gharudawhy not use bitwig ?18:25
sinewavBitwig seems great, I just haven't bought it yet. Too accustomed to my old software.18:26
GharudaI'm crying that ableton doesn't make a linux port :'(18:26
Gharudabitwig only has 1 year of free updates18:26
sinewavBitwig is made from people who worked for Ableton and wanted to go in a different direction.18:27
sinewavFrom what I can tell it's superior.18:27
sinewavBut Ableton is old and entrenched in culture.18:27
GharudaFrom what i can tell bitwig just lookes better at first sight but isn't as deep and the ui is one big cluttery mess18:28
sinewavWeird! When I tried the Bitwig demo I found it intuitive. That's just how software is. It's the advice I give to everyone looking to get into music production. I say "download every demo you can and pick the one that make the most sense since that all to basically the same thing."18:29
sinewav*they all18:30
Gharuda(yeah demo .... not friendly naborhood pirated software)18:30
Gharudauntil you go for a full release ofc18:31
Gharudayou cant learn a workflow on the demo18:31
sinewavAlso, if you are interested in a clear-headed but kind of depressing read, Louigi Verona wrote an article recently about the state of Linux Audio:18:32
sinewavhttp://www.louigiverona.com/?page=projects&s=writings&t=linux&a=linux_linuxaudio18:32
GharudaWell im mainly here for houdini18:34
Gharudaaudio is secondairy18:34
Gharudai just wanne have bitwig running when i wanne fool around18:34
sinewavOK good. Linux is a tough platform for creative types unless you are using Blender.18:34
Gharudawell i also want just want to generally learn linux18:36
Gharudaas i want to go into ops for linux18:36
Gharudabut i know nothing for now18:36
sinewavIt's a good thing to know. I jumped into Linux back in 2010 without any knowledge of IT and Programming, but now that's my job, and I got it because I know enough about how to configure Linux servers. So that's cool. Good luck to you!18:44
Gharudathx19:18
Gharudahow'd you learn ?19:18
GharudaBtw xsetwacom set is not recognising either HDMi-1-1 or Head 1 It returns Unknown parameter name ...19:19
sinewavI learned Linux by coming up with increasingly complicated projects to work on. Eventually I took a certificate class at the local college that went over Linux servers and that helped out a lot.19:30
sinewavHere is a good website for basics: https://linuxjourney.com/19:31
GharudaTHx19:31
GharudaDoes gnome eat more reqaurces then lxde19:31
Gharudai realy need to map my tablet to one screen and xsetwacom aint working for shit19:32
sinewavReally, there isn't much difference between the popular DEs like MATE, XFCE, GNOME, and Cinnamon. LXDE is very light and KDE is heavier on average, but not by much.19:33
sinewavlxde19:33
sinewav*19:33
Gharudayeah i'm not going to switch to something that uses X4 ram19:33
GharudaBut why wont this shit recognise HDMI-1-1 as an output19:34
sinewavThe biggest problem in Linux isn't how much RAM a DE uses, but how well it performs with shitty video chipsets.19:34
sinewavSome compositors are worse than others19:34
Gharudaare you referring to gpu ?19:34
sinewavYeah, GPU. You might want to check the "Additional Drivers" utility and see of there are drivers that will help you with the HDMI problem.19:35
GharudaI already switched to the nvidea drivers19:35
Gharudai have a reletivly recent gpu19:36
Gharuda860M if i'm not wrong19:36
sinewavAh. Well, I'm not sure what else to do about it other than combing through https://ubuntuforums.org/19:37
sinewavAlso, the Linux Mint forums are usually better than the Ubuntu ones.19:37
sinewavCuriously, Mint has been slightly more popular than Ubuntu for several years.19:38
GharudaMint is the worst peace of shit looking distro in tha universe :D19:38
sinewavha19:38
GharudaIts more poplular becouse people use it for their grandparents19:39
Gharudaso it gets used on family members who will alwatys be nubs19:39
sinewavyeah I haven't used it in years. Although thanks to Mint I'm no using Ubuntu with the MATE Desktop.19:39
GharudaSo for each person that knows linux that one is prob used +119:39
sinewavnow using*19:39
GharudaBut its so fuuugly ?19:40
sinewavMATE?19:40
sinewavYeah it's ugly.19:40
sinewavBut I don't need much in a DE. I just need things out of my way.19:40
sinewavI'll most likely switch back to Ubuntu Studio when 18.04 is realeased.19:42
sinewavI've been avoiding Thunar because there are some serious bugs that need fixing. (They aren't quite fixed yet).19:42
Unit193Tried out the latest release?  .11 fixed some major crashing issues.19:43
GharudaOj unit19:43
Gharudacans you help me19:43
Gharudai cant set my wacom tablet to use only my right screen19:44
Gharudasystem returns unknown parameter value when i assign it to HEAD-119:44
sinewavNo I haven't, but I'll definitely check out .11 when I see it in a distro.19:44
Gharuda(server display config in nvidea server display is empty19:46
studio-user782Hi everyone - Pete here from NZ. First time using IRC, so I hope I get the netiquette right! Does anyone here know about bootloader problems, because my computer froze partway through a software update and messed up GRUB so now it just gives me a > prompt and I'm having to boot from a Live USB of the latest release?21:28
Unit193Sounds like a case of live cd, chroot in, grub-install and update grub.21:29
studio-user782Thanks, Unit193. Will it make any difference that I'm on Xenial and that the Software Updater gave me what it called a "partial upgrade" to get over previous problems it had during an update?21:33
Unit193I don't use "Software Updater", presumably you're still on Xenial though, so in that case while I was chrooted in I'd complete the updates too.21:41
studio-user782Sounds like a good plan. I'm more of a skilled user than a sysadmin, so my knowledge is a bit sketchy: I've never chrooted before. I've got two volumes mounted from my damaged system: one small one that looks like it should be /boot, and one big one that looks like it should be root (/). What do you think I should do to chroot in, and what result should I expect? (Thanks so much for your help, by the way!)21:59
Unit193You'll have to mount / in, say, /target/ then /boot in /target/boot, and since I'm lazy and don't want to do all the setup, I use a script for the bindmounting and chrooting in.22:02
studio-user782I don't suppose you could share your script, could you?22:07
Unit193It's (patched) from the unpackaged arch-install-scripts package.  Basically bindmounts dev, proc, sys, etc, devpts in.22:08
krytarikstudio-user782: I'll just generally link this now..: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing#Reinstalling_GRUB_222:09
Unit193https://sigma.unit193.net/~unit193/arch-chroot22:10
Unit193Oooh, right.  Instructions!  Nice choice. :D22:10
krytarik:P22:10
Unit193Forget I linked that one. :P22:10
studio-user782You two are awesome!22:11
* Unit193 gives krytarik more points for actually linking normal instructions.22:12
krytarik\o/22:13
studio-user782That's great - I'm going to give that a go. :)22:14
Unit193(Though that method isn't as fun. >_> )22:15
studio-user590Hello22:55
studio-user782Hey, Unit193, I scrolled down until I found instructions that looked like they matched your method and I've repaired GRUB. It complained about a missing EFI directory, but I found it (/dev/sda1), mounted it under my chrooted /boot/efi and did the grub-install again with no errors reported.23:53
studio-user782Thanks again!23:53
Unit193AH!  UEFI!  And glad you got it, and reported back.23:54
Unit193"Welcome.23:54
