Ben64Nobabs27: just use xev00:01
Nobabs27k ill try if it still has the issue here in a sec00:02
afoxit'll definitely have the issue. but we need to see if its the keyboard glitching out or not00:02
Nobabs27actually no00:03
Nobabs27because00:03
Nobabs27the issue only happens inside the terminal00:03
Toeplitzhello dax :)00:03
Nobabs27so xev will not pick it up00:03
Ben64of course it will00:03
Nobabs27then how?00:04
Nobabs27because you have to have the window selected for it to pick up key presses00:04
Ben64if you see something come up in xev that you didn't press, there you go00:04
Nobabs27I cant have the xev window selected AND the terminal ...00:04
Ben64why would you need the terminal window00:04
Nobabs27because the issue only happens inside the terminal...00:05
Ben64if you see something come up in xev that you didn't press, there you go00:05
Nobabs27...yeah xev will not work00:05
Ben64it will00:05
Nobabs27you have to have the window selected00:05
Ben64i know00:05
Nobabs27...therein is the issue00:05
Ben64the point of using xev is to see if it's sending things it isn't supposed to00:06
Nobabs27but I cant send keys to the terminal and xev00:06
Ben64you don't need to00:06
Ben64you're testing the input00:06
Nobabs27how though?  Don't I need the xev window selected for it to pickup key presses?00:07
Ben64yes00:07
Nobabs27...00:07
Nobabs27breh00:07
Ben64you're not getting it at all00:07
Nobabs27the issue is only inside the terminal, I cant select two windows at the same time00:07
Ben64omg you're TESTING00:07
Ben64i don't know how to explain this any simpler00:08
skinuxThis may be a dumb question, but how do I add a directory as an option under Places panel menu?00:08
Ben64lets say your keyboard is sending "2" when you hit "1", you don00:08
Nobabs27so your saying it matters not that the issue wont happen?00:08
Ben64't need the terminal open to see that, you can use xev00:08
Nobabs27well xev seems to be pick up the keys00:09
Nobabs27@Ben6400:11
Nobabs27also im like 90% sure the issue is with gnome-terminal00:12
jeffreylevesquedoes `usermod` even work on root?00:12
Nobabs27as it does not seem to happen with xterm00:12
naccjeffreylevesque: i somehow doubt it00:13
naccjeffreylevesque: and doesn't really make sense to attempt most changes to the root user00:13
jeffreylevesquethat's what i think00:13
jeffreylevesqueyeah00:13
jeffreylevesquetrue00:13
naccjeffreylevesque: i suppose the shell might be changeable00:13
naccjeffreylevesque: but most other things you wouldn't want to change00:13

hfpHi, I set an option at some point to show the trash, my home folder, and the network, and other icons on my desktop. I'd like to return the desktop to have nothing on it but can't find where to set it this way. Any idea?00:43
pavloshfp: are you running ubuntu mate?00:45
Tin_manpavlos, its in Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings00:47
pavloshfp: see above00:47

Tin_manyou can just right click and remove them from the menu00:48
lettermanSo I just installed 16.10 and it worked fine in the livecd, but after it finished installing it ejected the CD and rebooted and now it's just a black screen with a white cursor on tty700:50
lettermanI'm not sure exactly how to fix it, and all I have is the text terminal to work from.00:51
Bashing-omlethu: Try: ' sudo apt update ; sudo apt upgrade ; sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall ' as if it is a graphic's driver .00:53
hfppavlos: Using ubuntu.00:55
hfpThere is no such option in the system settings window unless I'm missing something?00:56
pavloshfp: I dont know how you remove the trash icon from the bottom left.00:56
lettermanso I have a fresh install that worked in the livecd, but rebooted and now it's just a black screen00:57
lettermanhow do I trouble shoot it?00:57
hfpoooh I remember! I used the unity tweak tool! It's not part of the system settings.00:58

Bashing-omletterman: ^^ sorry for the bad highlight lethu :(01:00

Bashing-omletterman: Ouch . I do not know enough about AMD hybrid graphics .01:04
lettermanthough it does say my clock is 33 mhz and that can't be right.. I have a Radeon R9 390X, I think it's clock is supposed to be 1000mhz01:04

Jordan_Uberryhwite: If you're concerned only with performance of games then Windows will usually be the better choice.02:26
berryhwitehmmm thanks jordan02:26
Jordan_Uberryhwite: You're welcome.02:26
berryhwiteit is performance im looking for02:26
afoxwhat made you want to use linux to do counterstrike?02:29
berryhwitejust seeing it was available, and being a fan of a unix base02:30
berryhwitedoesnt seem the best for gaming though02:30
afoxcool. i've played counterstrike on linux quite a bit. i've never had a problem with it. often with a subpar graphics card.02:30
afoxoverall linux isn't the ideal choice for games. most games are built with windows in mind. even mac suffers there.02:31
berryhwiteyeah, tf2 and cs on mac are slow02:31
afoxa lot of games will run, and run well, but if your primary function is gaming. well linux isn't it.02:31
Jordan_UJagst3r15: Awk by default just prints output to stdout. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16529716/awk-save-modifications-in-place . Where did you get that command from and what is your end goal?02:31

berryhwiteit is, primarily the computer is for audio production so thats why mac02:33
afoxunderstood.02:33
berryhwiteand youre right, its just a laptop so its not built for performance gaming02:33
Jagst3r15Jordan_U I got it, I had to put it ina  tmp file first..kind of weird but it works02:33
afoxberryhwite: i have an xps15 - work issued. running linux, but it's still not the gaming machine it would be if i were running windows full time.02:34
afoxi totally understand though.02:34
berryhwitehmm interesting02:34
berryhwiteso maybe windows has less overhead02:34
berryhwiteand since games are designed for it02:35
berryhwitei guess will always run better02:35
afoxno... games are simply built to run on windows first.02:35
berryhwiteyeah02:35
afoxbecause the majority of game buyers all run windows02:35
Ilchello everyone02:36
berryhwiteyour help is appreciated afox, thank you02:36
afoxberryhwite: with a solid gpu you can play all kinds of games well.02:38
berryhwitei know less about todays gpus but i thought that Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB would run it fine02:38
afoxberryhwite: also linux is AMAZING in it's own right without gaming.02:38
berryhwiteits not high end but its over a gig of gpu ram02:39
berryhwitei dunno, i feel like the performance could be better02:39
afoxwhat have you been doing previously? running parallels?02:41
berryhwitepartitioned- boot campp02:41
berryhwitewindows 10 i think02:41
afoxi just watched a couple of videos playing CS on mac with that gpu. windows seems to handle it fairly well.02:44
afoxhows your peformance in ubuntu vs windows?02:44
berryhwitehavent installed ubuntu yet02:44
berryhwitei wonder what settings i should change02:45
afoxi missed something. im sorry. have you tried running linux on your mac to play CS?02:45
berryhwitenot yet no02:46
JeevesMosshow do I change the login screen to NOT have a user name (like a windows login screen)02:46
berryhwitei dont think i will after what youve told me02:46
berryhwiteonly mac+windows right now02:47
afoxas much as I absolutely adore linux I wouldn't suggest to anyone to install linux over windows just for gaming. it doesn't really make sense.02:48
berryhwitei used ubuntu back in 2007 or 2008 and loved it, but i need mac and windows more :(02:48
afoxthats understandable.02:49

nbros652Burnthebanks, so if I were the one setting it up and I didn't expect the end-user to really make many system modifications, would you say the usability gap shrinks?03:37
minimecSpaceAce: How do you reinstall it and what package exactly...03:37
BurnthebanksGalahad2017:  look into docker, it allows you to run and ssh into VM's without all the pain of virtualbox03:37

Galahad2017ok - Docker easy to setup like VirtualBox?03:38
Galahad2017is it free?03:38
Galahad2017also would you go about it by working on desktop OS first, then installing a server VM to work on that?03:39
Burnthebanksnbros652:  My personal experience is that it is not intuitive even in that case.03:39
minimecSpaceAce: I would personally not do that. The default version of your ubuntu distro should be the 'best' choice...03:39
Galahad2017SpaceAce: 17.04 comes out like tomorrow. it has the latest Mesa drivers. u might want to just upgrade to it03:40
BurnthebanksGalahad2017: Docker is free, and yess that is essentially the workflow.03:40

LinuxAdventurehello, is anybody here using Budgie DE on Ubuntu? I have Ubuntu 16.04.2 installed on my laptop and wish to try Budgie.04:56
lotuspsychje!budgie | LinuxAdventure04:56
ubottuLinuxAdventure: Ubuntu Budgie is a community !flavour of Ubuntu featuring the Budgie desktop. Its first official release will be 17.04. As with all development versions, for questions involving Ubuntu Budgie 17.04 support, visit #ubuntu+1. Ubuntu Budgie 16.04 and 16.10 are not supported by the Ubuntu project. https://ubuntubudgie.org/04:56
LinuxAdventuregreat. when will 17.04 be realeased officially. Eagerly waiting for it.04:57
phelixi had a motherboard go bad and had to replace mothervoard and cpu.. I still have hd with ubuntu setup. There anyway to recover my data from my hard drive before reinstalling?04:57
Ben64LinuxAdventure: sometime in the next 48 hours04:58
gogetaphelix, should boot up04:58
LinuxAdventuregreat. will that be stable and ready for end users? I mean complete with all the bugs fixed?04:58
Ben64unlikely04:59
LinuxAdventurecan I upgrade from 16.04.2 smoothly or will I have to reinstall it?04:59
Ben6416.04 -> 16.10 -> 17.0404:59
gogetaphelix, ubuntu is pretty frendly to hardware changes05:00
OerHekslolz .. "complete with all the bugs fixed?"  not the ones we found today05:00
lotuspsychje!info testdisk | phelix05:00
LinuxAdventureyou mean, first I have to upgrade it to 16.10?05:00
ubottuphelix: testdisk (source: testdisk): Partition scanner and disk recovery tool, and PhotoRec file recovery tool. In component universe, is optional. Version 7.0-1build1 (yakkety), package size 355 kB, installed size 1405 kB05:00
Ben64LinuxAdventure: but keep in mind 17.04 is only supported until January 2018, 16.04 is supported until April 202105:00
lotuspsychjeLinuxAdventure: are you sure you want to go from LTS to non-lts also?05:00

daxcorrect05:01
daxLTS is every 2 years05:01
dax16.04 14.04 12.04... 18.04 in the future05:01
phelixis there a way i can reconfigure ubuntu with new motherboard and cpu so that I dont have to reinstall?05:01
LinuxAdventureok. I'll stay with 16.04.2 then.05:01
gogetaLinuxAdventure, 16.04 is lts05:01
LinuxAdventureMay be I'll download 17.04 and test it in Virtual Box.05:02
gogetaphelix, it should do it on its own05:02
phelixhmm, having serious issues booting. Can only get to recovery mode05:02
gogetaphelix, oh05:02
LinuxAdventurethanks for the info. I think, Budgie is not a mature DE yet. am I right?05:03
Jordan_Uphelix: What happens when you try to boot normally? Did you have any proprietary drivers (especially graphics drivers) installed?05:04
lotuspsychjeLinuxAdventure: budgie will become an official ubuntu flavor05:04
LinuxAdventureany advantages or special freatures in Budgie?05:05
LinuxAdventureor is it just a different DE?05:05
OerHeksLinuxAdventure, read the releasenotes?05:05
OerHeks* for the beta2, that is05:06
phelixyes but still using the same graphics card. It gets to one spot and it just hangs and doesn't boot. But ethernet and all sorts of drivers must be different. Is there anything I can run via commandline that will update and rescan the system for updated hardware changes?05:06
LinuxAdventurehow heavy will Budgie be as compared to XFCE?05:07
gogetaphelix, i but the gpu is failing05:07
gogetaphelix, the other stuff the system would handel05:07
Ben64LinuxAdventure: similar probably05:08
gogetaphelix, as it will have a diffrent pci adress now05:08
xanguaLinuxAdventure: budgie is pretty snappy05:08
phelixeven though i took that same card and put it in this system?05:08
phelixahh ok05:09
phelixany idea how to update this?05:09
LinuxAdventurethat's great. But, I am not able to find the system requirements on the site. Would it be suitable for old laptops?05:09
gogetaphelix, what kind of gpu05:09
Ben64LinuxAdventure: if it works with xubuntu it should be fine05:09
phelixnvidia geforce gt 74005:10
Jordan_Uphelix: With the exception of proprietary drivers all hardware is configured at every boot, there is nothing to update.05:10
LinuxAdventureI have a 11 year old laptop that runs on Celeron M 1.5 Ghz single core cpu and 2 GBs or RAM and has 40 GBs HDD. Will Budgie run on that?05:10
gogetaJordan_U, he has proptery drivers05:11
phelixhmm, well something is different because it does not want to boot anymore.05:11
gogetaphelix, sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*05:11
Jordan_Uphelix: Can you boot from an Ubuntu LiveCD/USB (of the same version / flavor of Ubuntu you have installed)?05:11
gogetaphelix, it should fall back to the open drivers05:11
gogetajust reboot05:11
xanguaLinuxAdventure: for old laptops maybe no, better stick with xfce or lxde05:12
gogetaphelix, if that fixes you then you can reinstall05:12

It works at 1920x1080@60hz but not at 2560x1440@60hz (optimal external screen resolution). It works using Windows. I believe the problem is the refresh rate, ubuntu must be trying 25560x1440@60hz but I believe it should be 59hz (otherwise getting "no signal" message on screen)12:17

g105bCan someone help me with ACL? What I'm trying to achieve is to have anything that's put into /var/www be placed in the "developers" group. What I've tried is the following: `chmod g+s /var/www && setfacl -d -m g:developers:rwx /var/www` which works fine for creating new files, but when I move directories into /var/www the groups stay the same as they are at the source, and are no longer "sticky". naccbswartz: there's nothing in 17.10 that's not in 17.04 (yet)14:08
naccbswartz: as the archive hasn't opened yet for 17.10 development14:08
bswartzthey're fixed in debian stretch, but it seems zesty does not use .debs from stretch14:08
naccbswartz: which package, which version, etc14:08
geirhaThe codename for 17.10 will probably be announced in very soon14:09
bswartznacc: nfs-common -- debian stretch has 1.3.4, zesty has 1.2.814:09
naccbswartz: that's the base version14:10
bswartznacc: you think there might be backports in the zesty version that solve my issue? I could try it I guess14:10
naccbswartz: there are two deltas since 1.2.8 in zesty (hence 1.2.8-9.2ubuntu2)14:10
geirhabswartz: apt-get changelog nfs-common14:11
bswartzin particular I want to be able to exportfs to an IPv6 address14:11
naccbswartz: i have no idea what the issue is, as you've not said :) if you have a debian bug reference14:11
bswartzIPv6 support wasn't added to nfs-utils in the 1.2.8 version -- it came later14:12
naccbswartz: if it was someting fixed upstream (or added in the case of a feature) it's probably not in zesty14:12
Guest52595Can i use Vi with the Orca Screenreader?14:12
naccbswartz: when the merge occurs in 17.10, then ubuntu will get the fix14:12
bswartznacc: yeah I know, that's why I'm eager to see which version zesty+1 takes14:12
naccbswartz: it will take whatever is in unstable when development starts14:13
bswartzin the mean time I'm stuck building my own nfs-utils from source, which results in a slightly unstable system14:13
naccbswartz: and will probably merge a few times in the release if debian does more versions14:13
naccbswartz: did you file a bug with ubuntu?14:13
bswartznacc: there's no point filing a bug if it's already fixed upstream is there?14:13
naccbswartz: sure there is -- others would be able to search that it doesn't work and be notified when it's fixed14:14
bswartzI've been told if it's fixed is debian already, it's just a matter of time until ubuntu gets it14:14
geirhait's a new feature, not a bug, so older versions won't get patched14:14

bswartzit's frustrating because nfs-utils 1.2.8 was released in 2013 and it's still shipping with zesty -- the 1.3.4 version is from 2016 so it's slightly less archaic, but still not quite modern14:18
